Meet Lawyer Michael Dreeben, The Man Behind Three Major Anti-Trump Operations

Michael Dreeben helping Democrats with their 2024 lawfare strategy shows how much coordination is behind this Soviet-style attempt to imprison Biden’s political opponents.

Eyebrows were raised last week when it was discovered that Special Counsel Jack Smith had added attorney Michael Dreeben to his legal team.

“An interesting detail: Michael Dreeben somehow snuck into Jack Smith’s office. He was Mueller’s appellate guy,” enthused Marcy Wheeler, a proponent of the debunked conspiracy theory that Donald Trump stole the 2016 election by colluding with Russia.

Fellow Russia-collusion hoaxer Rachel Maddow of MSNBC ran an entire segment to announce the exciting news that Dreeben is “helming this part of the case,” meaning Smith’s request to the Supreme Court to look at whether American presidents may be prosecuted for actions taken while they are president. Left-wing legal activist (and, yes, another bitter clinger Russia-collusion hoaxer) Joyce Vance said her “friend” Dreeben had “framed this petition” before the Supreme Court.

Mueller, of course, is Robert Mueller, the ostensible head of the Mueller probe that treated the Russia conspiracy scam as credible and leaked information to the propaganda press to ensure it had maximum effect. After 18 months, the investigation concluded with not a single American, much less a single Trump official, being found to have colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election. On the way to that conclusion, it wreaked havoc on Republicans across the country, and a strong majority of Democrats still believe the “big lie” that Russians stole the 2016 election for Donald Trump.

The Real Leaders of the Mueller Probe

As anyone who saw the visibly struggling Mueller testify in July 2019 knows, he wasn’t in a mental position to lead the operation. That was left to key operatives, including more than a dozen Democrats. For example, Mueller selected partisan Andrew Weissmann for a key role. In addition to his ethically flawed prosecutions of Enron executives, he was at Hillary Clinton’s ill-fated 2016 Victory Night Party. The inspector general report showed him as a full participant in the Russia-collusion hoax. After the Mueller probe, Weissmann went on to raise money for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. Weissmann was also part of the team at left-wing legal group Just Security that unofficially wrote Jack Smith’s indictment of Trump over classified documents.

As partisan as Weissmann was, and continues to be in his role at left-wing propaganda outlet MSNBC, he wasn’t even the actual leader of the Mueller lawfare strategy. That was the much more subtle, much more careful, and much less sloppy Michael Dreeben.

"The Campaign Legal Center in Washington, DC filed a devastating 39-page complaint with the FEC today alleging illegal coordination between Ron Desantis's presidential campaign and his allied Never Back Down PAC.

The complaint comes on the heels of a lengthy expose by the Washington Post over the weekend that alleged widespread coordination between the two groups, which is illegal. The founder and director of the PAC, Jeff Roe, resigned his position hours after the article was published. The complaint referenced some of the information in the Washington Post story.

The complaint alleges that the PAC and the campaign coordinated with each other illegally for months. The complaint notes that the PAC received over $130 million in contributions from only 191 donations. It alleges that these megadonors have illegally circumvented campaign finance laws by making six-figure contributions to a PAC that was coordinating with the campaign.

The complaint cites many examples of coordination. It notes that the same law firm represented the campaign and the PAC, and that it was seeded with $82 million in funds leftover from Desantis's reelection campaign for governor and controlled by long-time Desantis loyalists. Desantis's first campaign manager Generra Peck developed the strategy for the PAC and selected the people to lead it."

A new Suez crisis threatens the world economy

Editor’s note: on December 18th BP, the British oil-and-gas giant, said it would pause all shipments through the Red Sea citing the recent escalation in attacks.

Over a thousand miles from Gaza, a naval crisis is unfolding that could transform the war between Israel and Hamas into a global affair with implications for the world economy. Since December 15th four of the world’s five largest container-shipping companies, cma cgm, Hapag-Lloyd, Maersk and msc, have paused or suspended their services in the Red Sea, the route through which traffic from the Suez Canal must pass, as Iran-backed Houthi militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, escalate their attacks on global shipping flows. As one of the world’s major trade arteries suddenly closes, America and its allies are ramping up naval activity in the Middle East, and may even attack the Houthis, in order to re-establish free passage.

Bab al-Mandab is a narrow strait between Africa and the Arabian peninsula through which an estimated 12% of global trade by volume normally flows, and perhaps 30% of global container traffic. It has become a no-go zone as the Houthis, based in Yemen, attack shipping, ostensibly in support of the Palestinians in Gaza. The strikes have been going on for weeks but have now escalated sharply. On December 15th the Houthis threatened to attack one ship, struck another one with a drone and launched two ballistic missiles at the mv Palatium III, one of which hit the vessel. The attack on the Palatium III was the first ever use of an anti-ship ballistic missile. All the ships were Liberian-flagged. On December 16th an American naval vessel, uss Carney (pictured), shot down 14 drones over the Red Sea while a British ship, hms Diamond, destroyed another.

Faced with a soaring risk of ships being crippled and their crews killed, the global shipping industry is switching into emergency mode. On December 15th Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd paused their services. On December 16th cma cgm followed, as did msc, the owner of the Palatium III, which said that its ships would not use the Suez Canal in either direction “until the Red Sea passage is safe”, and that some vessels would be rerouted via the Cape of Good Hope. Together these four companies account for 53% of the global container trade. Smaller container operators, as well as dry-bulk carriers and oil tanker firms, may now follow their lead.

The crisis has two big implications: one for the world economy and the other regarding the risks of military escalation in the Middle East as Western countries try to re-establish order. Start with the economy. Revenue from the Suez Canal is a major source of income for Egypt, which is already in the midst of a financial crisis. (Israel will be less affected, with only about 5% of its trade passing through Eilat, its Red Sea port.) For the world economy a prolonged closure of the Suez route would raise the costs of trade as shipping is rerouted around Africa, taking more time, and insurance premiums soar. Short-term supply-chain snarls could also result from wide-scale rerouting of trade: in 2021 the Ever Given, a Taiwanese-operated ship, ran aground and blocked the canal for six days, intensifying a global supply-chain crunch. If the Red Sea security crisis is perceived to threaten shipping in the nearby Arabian Sea, through which perhaps one-third of global seaborne oil supply passes, the economic costs would be dramatically higher.

These risks are why America and its allies will be inclined to act. But the Houthi threat is a daunting and complex one. The militant group’s motto includes the exhortation “Death to Israel. A curse upon the Jews,” and it claims that it is targeting “all ships heading to Israeli ports” until food and medicine are delivered to Gaza. But most of the ships being attacked are neither headed to Israel nor under Israeli ownership. Countries from around the world are affected: one of the vessels attacked by the Houthis was sailing under a Hong Kong flag.

The apparent incoherence of the Houthis’ stated aims should not be confused with ineffectiveness. For years Iran has trained and armed the group in its successful insurgency within Yemen, and in a war against Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (uae), the Islamic Republic’s regional rivals. The sophistication of some of the weapons involved is high. “The Houthis have a giant anti-ship missile arsenal at this point,” says Fabian Hinz of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (iiss), a think-tank in London, including those with ranges of up to 800km.

Western officials are unclear as to whether Iran is directing individual attacks. Israeli intelligence is not yet convinced the latest strikes were sanctioned by the Corps 6000, a unit of Iran’s expeditionary Quds Force that works with the Houthis in a joint command centre. However, the group is thought to receive intelligence on shipping from Iran’s surveillance ships in the Red Sea. And the broad campaign against shipping fits with Iran’s strategy of calibrated pressure, avoiding an all-out attack on Israel while drawing on its regional proxies to harangue it violently from all sides. But Iran does not have complete control over Houthi attacks—and the strikes are dragging in more and more countries.

Diplomacy might help de-escalate the crisis. In 2015 Saudi Arabia and the uae intervened in Yemen’s civil war in favour of the internationally recognised government. In March 2022 the Saudis agreed to a ceasefire, leaving the Houthis in control of the capital, Sana’a, and the strategic western coast. They may soon announce a road map to make the ceasefire permanent and end the war. Commitments to cease maritime attacks could become part of any talks.

Nonetheless, a bigger military response to the Houthi threat is likely. A multinational task force led by America’s navy is already operating off the Yemeni coast in order to try to deter the Houthis from forcibly boarding ships—a raid was disrupted in November—and firing missiles. It includes both Egypt and Saudi Arabia. In recent weeks American, British and French warships have all intercepted Houthi drones and missiles, and America has asked Australia to send a warship, too.

But this defensive armada has struggled to keep the crisis under control. The Houthis have demonstrated that a few drones and missiles can always get through. One potential next step involves armed escorts for merchant shipping, which America used in the 1980s during the so-called tanker war between Iran and Iraq. But these require a very large number of warships, according to naval sources involved in the debate.

The main alternative is to strike the Houthis and their arsenal directly. America and Israel have both developed plans to attack Houthi depots and launchers. America will be loth to broaden its involvement in the Middle East: the Biden administration had been focused on expanding the Red Sea task force and putting diplomatic and economic pressure on Iran. Israel does not want a new conflict: it is already facing pressure from America to wind down this phase of the Gaza war, and is concerned about Hizbullah, the Lebanese militant group, which has been firing missiles at Israel almost daily. Yet if Iran and its Houthi proxies continue attacks that keep one of the world’s major trade routes closed, escalation may be inevitable.■7

About me

I am a freelance journalist and writer, who covers local news and writes features for local and regional publications. Locally, I am interested in lifestyle issues and events; history and culture; and the economic and environmental pulse of Long Island. Globally, I think and write about parenting, women’s issues, and health and fitness.

My background is in marketing and advertising as well as editing and writing. I have an English Literature degree (2002) from Stony Brook University and PhD graduate coursework from The City University of New York.

Several years working with mid-sized clients, ranging from large retailers to small non-profits at New York advertising agencies, has given me a sharp sense of copy and business writing.

I’ve published work in national magazines like Triathlete magazine, regional publications like Long Island Parenting, and reported local news for online outlets like LongIslandWins.com

Over two years writing for Patch.com sites, touching on every beat there is, has given me a thorough grounding in local community journalism. I most recently was the guest editor for the successful news site, BabylonVillage.Patch.com. While running the news site and solely covering all community news, I managed to increase traffic numbers to the site, and generate heightened engagement and community interaction.

Writing is the perfect salve for my unrepentant curiosity about the world around me and at any given time I’m liable to have 43.7 amazing ideas for stories percolating in my brain. LIST: Shipping Giants Pause Red Sea Voyages as Attacks Mount

Reuters December 18, 2023

Dec 18 (Reuters) – Iranian-backed Houthi militants in Yemen have stepped up attacks on vessels in the Red Sea to show their support for Palestinian Islamist group Hamas fighting Israel in Gaza.

The attacks, targeting a route that allows East-West trade, especially of oil, to use the Suez Canal to save the time and expense of circumnavigating Africa, have pushed some shipping companies to re-route vessels to avoid the area.

Below are companies (in alphabetical order) that are considering or have decided to pause shipping via the Red Sea:

BP

Oil major BP on Dec. 18 said it had temporarily paused all transits through the Red Sea.

CMA CGM

French shipping group CMA CGM on Dec. 16 said it was pausing all container shipments through the Red Sea.

EQUINOR

Norwegian oil and gas firm Equinor on Dec. 18 said it had re-routed some vessels that had been heading towards the Red Sea.

EURONAV

Belgian oil tanker firm Euronav said on Dec. 18 it would avoid the Red Sea area until further notice.

EVERGREEN

Taiwanese container shipping line Evergreen said on Dec. 18 its vessels on regional services to Red Sea ports would sail to safe waters nearby and wait for further notification, while ships scheduled to pass through the Red Sea would be re-routed around the Cape of Good Hope. It also temporarily stopped accepting Israeli cargo.

FRONTLINE

Norway-based oil tanker group Frontline said on Dec. 18 that its vessels will avoid passages through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in the time ahead, boosting the rates customers must pay for crude transport.

HAPAG-LLOYD

German container shipping line Hapag Lloyd said on Dec. 18 it would re-route several ships via the Cape of Good Hope until the safety of passage through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea could be guaranteed.

A projectile believed to be a drone struck its vessel Al Jasrah on Dec. 15, while sailing close to the coast of Yemen. No crew were injured.

MAERSK

Denmark’s A.P. Moller-Maersk on Dec. 15 said it would pause all container shipments through the Red Sea until further notice, following a “near-miss incident” involving its vessel Maersk Gibraltar a day earlier.

The ship was targeted by a missile while traveling from Salalah, Oman, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the company said.

MSC

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said on Dec. 16 its ships would not transit through the Suez Canal, with some already rerouted via the Cape of Good Hope, a day after Houthi forces fired two ballistic missiles at its MSC Palatium III vessel. The decision will disrupt sailing schedules by several days, the Switzerland-based group said.

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has stopped cargo acceptance to and from Israel until further notice, theshipping company owned by Hong Kong-based Oriental Overseas (International) Ltd 0316.HK said on Dec. 16.

YANG MING MARINE TRANSPORT

Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport said on Dec. 18 it would divert ships sailing through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden via the Cape of Good Hope for the next two weeks.
