Facebook, Instagram’s Encyrpted Tech Allows Sexual Deviants To Target Kids

 

Meta is launching new encryption technology for direct messages on Facebook and Instagram amid protests by the social media giant’s former employees warning the updated system makes it more difficult to track down online child predators.

 

Earlier this month, the social media giant enabled “end-to-end” encryption for direct messages, which blocks anyone except the sender and receiver from viewing the contents of the communication, on Facebook and Instagram to ensure privacy protection for users.

 

Zuckerberg’s employees took issue with the encrypting Facebook messages when the project was initially announced in March 2019, prompting workers to resign in protest.

 

The 39-year-old Meta Chief Executive said at the time that “the future of communication will increasingly shift to private, encrypted services where people can be confident what they say to each other stays secure.”

 

Former engineer director David Erb quit working at Meta in protest of the initiative. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Erb, who ran Facebook’s “community integrity” team details how adults find children to prey upon using Facebook’s “People You May Know” algorithm.

 

“It was a hundred times worse than any of us expected,” he told the publication. “There were millions of pedophiles targeting tens of millions of children.”

 

Erb warned his superiors that encrypting direct messages on Facebook would provide a safe haven for predators who preyed upon children.

 

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone predictably downplays his company’s role in facilitating pedophilia and minimizes his former employees’ complaints about the encryption messaging.

 

“Former employees are entitled to their opinions, but not their own facts. The truth is, while we’d long invested in child safety efforts, in 2018 we began to restrict recommendations for potentially suspicious adults, continued ongoing efforts removing large groups of violating accounts and even supported a successful push to update the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reporting statute to cover many grooming situations, which previously had been included,” Stone said in a statement to Erb’s allegations.

 

As the former Meta engineer predicted, months later in May 2020, Department of Homeland Security investigators were notified of Meta users were using the encryption technology to prey on children.

 

In one instance, Karl Quitter, a Chicago man, exploited the new technology to solicit sexually explicit photos and videos of at least nine teenage girls in the Philippines.

 

Using the alias “Mathew Jones,” Quitter “preyed on the victims’ financial difficulties, using money transfers to the victims’ families to entice the girls to take the sexually explicit images,” according to federal prosecutors.

 

In an encrypted message to one 16-year-old victim in 2020, Quitter bribed the underaged girl, promising to send money to her family for medicine and food if she acquiesced to his demands.

Israel Fails To Prove Targeted Gaza Hospital Was Hamas Hub: Washington Post

 

For weeks, alternative news outlets like The Grayzone and The Intercept have cast major doubts on Israel's claim that the al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza sat atop a major Hamas command center. Now, even an ultimate establishment outlet the Washington Post has likewise found that Israel's claims about the hospital it besieged don't stand up to scrutiny.

 

Mistrust existed even before the Israeli Defense Forces first besieged the hospital before bombing a departing ambulance convoy, and then raiding the hospital in November. While those who reflexively back Israel at every turn may have been fooled, others rightly rolled their eyes as the Israeli government presented the world with a cartoon version of what was supposed to lie under the hospital, as if that was some kind of proof:

 

After its Nov. 15 raid of the hospital, the IDF distributed videos and photographs to bolster Israel's claims about the hospital, however the Post notes:

 

…the evidence presented by the Israeli government falls short of showing that Hamas had been using the hospital as a command and control center, according to a Washington Post analysis of open-source visuals, satellite imagery and all of the publicly released IDF materials.

 

That raises critical questions, legal and humanitarian experts say, about whether the civilian harm caused by Israel’s military operations against the hospital — encircling, besieging and ultimately raiding the facility and the tunnel beneath it — were proportionate to the assessed threat. – Washington Post

 

The Post's analysis refuted three cornerstone allegations that Israel had made. First, there is no compelling evidence of military use of the facility by Hamas. Second, contrary to pre-attack claims, the single tunnel under the hospital doesn't connect to five other buildings on the hospital campus that were supposed Hamas operational hubs. Finally, the Post found no proof that hospital wards had tunnel access.

Getting to zero trust: The Pentagon’s effort to put data security first in 2023

Defense Department Chief Information Officer John Sherman set the tone early in the year by telling Breaking Defense a major focus over 2023 would be aiming for baseline, targeted zero trust within four years.

 

WASHINGTON — With the leak of hundreds of classified documents and a new zero trust strategy, the Pentagon became laser focused on getting the implementation of the security concept right this year.

 

Zero trust means rather than letting users who pass security checks have free reign over a network, there would be continual checks to make sure each user is allowed to access different information. Essentially, under zero trust, networks are always assumed to be compromised.

 

And industry seemed to align to DoD’s ambitions. Amy Gilliland, president of General Dynamics Information Technology, told Breaking Defense in June that the company was pouring more money towards areas DoD deemed critical, including zero trust.

 

Gilliland said GDIT was increasing its investment this year by 50 percent in areas that mirror DoD’s increased investments: zero trust, 5G, multi-cloud management, software factories, automation for IT operations and artificial intelligence and machine learning. The company, she said, was also working to increase investments in quantum computing and defensive cyber operations.

 

One major zero trust program hailed out of the Defense Information Systems Agency finally reached a milestone this year. Booz Allen Hamilton in July was awarded a production agreement worth up to $1.86 billion for Thunderdome, DISA’s zero trust network architecture program. The contract was a follow-on production award for the company as DISA transitioned Thunderdome from prototyping to production.

California loses population for an unprecedented third year. It could cost state real clout

 

For the third year in a row, California saw its population drop, raising new concerns about how the much-discussed exodus could hurt the state's political influence.

 

The state's population declined by around 37,000 people from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023, or 0.1%. The loss is minuscule compared with the more than 500,000 people the state lost from April 2020 to July 2022. That's a good question. It seems to me that in these highly divided times the concept of "allies" has been lost. There seems to be an expectation by many that everyone has to agree on every point of policy in order to unite. To me that seems unrealistic and unnecessary. Navy awards $6-million contract for cleanup of World War II hangar in Tustin that burned

 

Navy officials announced this week that a $6-million contract has been awarded to an environmental cleanup firm to remove the debris that were released when an historic 17-story hangar in the city of Tustin caught fire.

 

There is no start date yet for the work awarded to ECC Environmental LCC.

 

The fire at one of two blimp hangars built in 1942 started Nov. 7 and burned for 24 days. The south hangar was not damaged. The two structures were part of a Marine Corps. air station that closed in 1997. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to city officals.

 

The Navy has agreed to pay Tustin $11 million toward the cleaning and repairs from the damage caused when fumes and debris from the fire drifted through the city. Tustin officials reported that the cost associated with the recovery may exceed $100 million. As the fire burned, residents feared that ash and debris from the World War II-era hangar contained asbestos.

As both a latecomer to the current hypersonic propulsion race and a decades-old veteran of high-Mach research, General Electric thinks it has discovered the missing piece: a rotating detonation combustor.

 

By harnessing the powerful energy release that comes from fuel detonation, the company that built the Mach 3 engines to power the North American XB-70 Valkyrie bomber and the canceled Boeing 2707 airliner half a century ago thinks it can lower the Mach number for the cutover speed between a turbofan and a ramjet low enough to make a full-scale, turbine-based combined-cycle (TBCC) propulsion system feasible at speeds faster than Mach 6.

Hutton) searched for several years to find a proper location between the ocean and Lake Worth. The quest for a new home had begun when it became apparent that she was to be the dowager queen of Palm Beach. At the time, there was little else here but undergrowth and swampy grounds, seemingly of not much use for a building site. With her realtor, Post crawled through underbrush of jungle-type growth in search of the perfect piece of property; the consequence of that search is the main house “Mar-a-Lago,” which is Spanish for “Sea to Lake.” This hurricane resistant structure is anchored by concrete and steel to a coral reef, and the whole of the property comprises approximately twenty acres of perfectly landscaped lawns. Across the southeast lawn, a Chattahoochee stone path leads to a tunnel under South Ocean Boulevard which opens onto the Beach Club. The site on which Mar-a-Lago sits is now considered the most valuable parcel of land anywhere in Florida.

 

The main house is an adaptation of the Hispano-Moresque style, long popular among the villas of the Mediterranean. It is crescent-shaped with an upper and lower cloister along the concave side of the building that faces Lake Worth. A seventy-five foot tower tops the structure, affording a magnificent view in all directions for miles. Three boatloads of Dorian stone were brought from Genoa, Italy for the construction of the exterior walls, arches and some of the interior. The stone was chosen for its quality of aging rapidly and for its adaptability to intricate carving. Upon close examination, tiny seashells and fossils can be seen in this distinctive stone of the 114 room ocean-to-lake villa. One of the attractions of Mar-a-Lago is the predominant use of Old Spanish tiles throughout. Post acquired approximately 36,000 tiles that had been collected by the late Mrs. Horace Havermeyer in the 1800’s. Among the earliest tiles, dating back to the 15th century, is the “Plus Ultra” tile, translated to “Beyond the Ultimate,” a Roman influence upon the Moors.

 

The architecture, sculpture, planning and craftsmanship that went into this magnificent estate could not be duplicated today. It was Post’s plan to bring together many Old World features of the Spanish, Venetian and Portuguese styles. She worked closely with Marion Wyeth, a well-known architect, on the exact size, placement and design of the floor plan. Joseph Urban, once the architect for the Emperor Franz Joseph and for the Khedive of Egypt, was called in from Vienna for the more elaborate details. Urban was then sent to Vienna for eminent sculptor Professor Franz Barwig and his son who worked for nearly three years modeling and carving extraordinary sculptures. The models for the parrots, monkeys and other motifs are still preserved on the premises.

 

In January 1969, The Department of the Interior designated the estate as “The Mar-a-Lago National Historic Site.” The property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 by an Act of Congress. Until her death in 1973, Post used the estate as a haven for many notable dignitaries. After her death, the estate was willed to the Federal Government for use as a diplomatic/presidential retreat. Ten years later, due to maintenance and security concerns, the government conferred title to the Post Foundation. In 1985, Donald J. Trump purchased the property from the Post Foundation and used the estate as a private residence until 1995. In April of 1995, Mar-a-Lago became established as The Mar-a-Lago Club. It is the last remaining Palm Beach estate still containing its buildings and land in almost identical form as its original conception. With the granting of easements to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The Mar-a-Lago Club carries with it a built in constituency that ensures its stewardship into the future.
