Iranian-backed Houthi small boats attack merchant vessel and U.S. Navy helicopters in Southern Red Sea

 

On Dec. 31 at 6:30am (Sanaa time) the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU issued a second distress call in less than 24 hours reporting being under attack by four Iranian-backed Houthi small boats. The small boats, originating from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, fired crew served and small arms weapons at the MAERSK HANGZHOU, getting to within 20 meters of the vessel, and attempted to board the vessel. A contract embarked security team on the MAERSK HANZGHOU returned fire. U.S. helicopters from the USS EISENHOWER (CVN 69) and GRAVELY (DDG 107) responded to the distress call and in the process of issuing verbal calls to the small boats, the small boats fired upon the U.S. helicopters with crew served weapons and small arms. The U.S. Navy helicopters returned fire in self-defense, sinking three of the four small boats, and killing the crews. The fourth boat fled the area. There was no damage to U.S. personnel or equipment.

A new law meant to protect children will require adult websites to verify users' ages, starting next week. What that looks like in practice remains to be seen, but one major site has already blocked access.

One of the world's largest pornography websites blocked access to at least some North Carolina users Thursday ahead of a new state law taking effect that will require adult websites to verify user ages.

 

Instead of complying or providing its usual content, Pornhub redirected North Carolina users to a message asking them to reach out to lawmakers and oppose the new law.

 

The website has blocked access in a number of states that passed similar laws, including Montana, where new law was also set to take effect Monday.

 

"Mandating age verification without proper enforcement gives platforms the opportunity to choose whether or not to comply," the site said in its message to North Carolina users. "As we’ve seen in other states, this just drives traffic to sites with far fewer safety measures in place."

 

North Carolina lawmakers passed the new law in September with an effective date of Jan. 1. The bill doesn’t spell out how websites should verify user ages, beyond saying they must use either a "commercially available database" for age and identify verification or "another commercially reasonable method.”

 

A 2023 survey found more than half of teenagers reported seeing online pornography by the time they were 13.

 

“It's a problem," said state Sen. Amy Galey, who pushed for the new law. "And it can’t just be up to the parent. We have to help the parents.”

 

Beyond Pornhub's decision, it remains to be seen what the law will look like in practice. Some age verification software asks users to hold their drivers license up to a web camera so it can be compared to a live image of their face.

 

“Everybody sort of makes their own choices," said Mike Stabile, spokesman for the Free Speech Coalition, a pornography industry trade group. "Some sites will block the state entirely. Most will probably ignore the regulations. And there may be some who engage in age verification, but that hasn’t been the case in most states.”

 

Law enforcement isn’t expected to police sites. Instead the bill set up a process for parents whose minor children are able to access pornography to sue providers.

 

Louisiana was the first to pass this sort of law, in 2022, and sites saw traffic drop between 80% and 95%, according to the Free Speech Coalition. People tend to simply look for a non-compliant site, visiting darker corners of the internet and sites that are hard to hold accountable because they’re based outside the United States, Stabile said.

 

North Carolina's law forbids website owners and their vendors from retaining customers' identifying information, but Stabile said users aren't willing to take a risk. Lawsuits have been filed over these laws in at least three other states, though as of Thursday North Carolina had not joined that list.

 

“We’re looking at, obviously as laws go into effect, what makes sense to challenge,” Stabile said. “The general idea is that all of these laws will be challenged.”

 

Pornhub said in its statement that it supports laws that require age verification on devices, as opposed at individual websites. Galey, R-Alamance, said she’s “willing to work with anybody to improve the law and to make it better target what we want to do, which is protect children.” She also said it’s “a little challenging to think that this industry is some kind of great player with clean hands.”

 

Seven other states have passed an age verification law, according to the National Decency Coalition. A similar bill has been introduced in nine other states, according to the Decency Coalition’s count.

 

North Carolina’s law was was tacked into an unrelated bill that added a computer science course to North Carolina’s graduation requirements. The full measure – House Bill 8 – passed with wide and bipartisan support.

 

The new law uses long-standing legal definitions of obscenity to identify prohibited material. Galey said the law wasn’t crafted to go after social media sites, where users often post pictures of themselves scantily clad.

 

“We’re not going after the risqué and the R rated,” Galey said. “But we need some kind of firewall for hard core pornography.”

Indian-Origin Family of 3 Found Dead inside Their $5Mn Mansion, Cops Suspect Domestic Violence

 

An Indian-origin man, his wife and their teenage daughter were found dead in their mansion in the US state of Massachusetts this week. Rakesh Kamal, 57, his wife, Teena, 54, and their 18-year-old daughter, Ariana, were found dead in their $5 million Dover, Massachusetts mansion on Thursday.

 

The police are treating the deaths as an apparent domestic violence case. Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said the incident was a “terrible tragedy” and added that a gun was found near Rakesh Kamal’s body.

 

He did not reveal if all the three family members were shot dead and who shot them citing that he is waiting for the medical examiner’s ruling before taking a decision on whether to rule the incident as a murder-suicide.

 

The New York Post in a report citing online records said the Kamals appeared to have faced financial problems in recent years. The mansion they were living in went into foreclosure – meaning the mortgagor took possession of the property – and was sold to the Massachusetts-based Wilsondale Associates LLC for $3 million.

 

They bought the property, which has 11 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, for $4 million in 2019.

 

During the time of the deaths, the family members were the only ones living in the mansion. Teena and her husband, who was called Rick by his close associates, previously ran a Massachusetts-based education systems company called EduNova.

 

Rakesh Kamal is an alumnus of Boston University, the MIT Sloan School of Management and Stanford University and had an extensive career in education consulting and launched EduNova with his wife in 2016. The Boston Globe in a report said that the company marketed a ‘student success system’ which aimed to improve marks scored by students in middle school, high school and college.

 

The company performed well initially but was dissolved in December 2021.

 

Teena filed for bankruptcy in September 2022 – listing between $1 million and $10 million in liabilities, the newspaper reported, adding that the filing was dismissed due to insufficient documentation. She also served as one of the board of directors for the American Red Cross of Massachusetts and worked in the education and technology sectors for over three decades. She is an alumna of Harvard University and Delhi University.

 

Ariana, their teenage daughter, was enrolled in a neuroscience course in Middlebury College, a $64,800-a-year private liberal arts school in Vermont.

 

Their lifeless bodies were discovered by a relative who stopped by to check on the family members after not hearing from them in one or two days. The district attorney said there were no previous reports of domestic incidents tied to their home.

 

“There’s been no police reports, there’s been no problems, no domestic issues, no nothing at that house or in the entire neighbourhood that I’m aware of. This is very unfortunate and our heart goes out to the entire Kamal family on this terrible tragedy,” Morissey was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

 

“Although the investigation is at a very preliminary stage, the evidence available at this time does not indicate the involvement of any outside party, but suggests that this is a deadly incident of domestic violence,” his office said in a statement.

Consumer Reports delivered a petition with almost 55,000 signatures to the four companies with bars that CR tests found were high in those heavy metals. Only one responded.

 

Levels of heavy metals in dark chocolate are sometimes surprisingly high, as shown by a recent Consumer Reports investigation.

 

CR scientists recently tested 28 different dark chocolate bars and found lead and cadmium in all of them. For 23 of those bars, eating a serving of about an ounce a day could potentially expose people to an amount of lead or cadmium that may have a negative health impact over time, particularly for vulnerable populations like children or anyone who is pregnant. Five of the bars we tested exceeded that threshold for both lead and cadmium.

 

After CR’s article detailing these findings was published, its food policy team reached out to the four companies that manufacture those five bars and asked them to commit, by Valentine’s Day, to removing heavy metals from the products.

 

Almost 55,000 people signed a petition urging these four companies—Hershey’s (maker of Lily’s Extremely Dark Chocolate 85% Cocoa bar); Mondelez International (maker of Green & Black’s Organic Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa bar); Trader Joe’s (maker of The Dark Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate 85% Cacao bar); and Theo Chocolate (maker of Organic Pure Dark Chocolate 70% cocoa bar and Organic Extra Dark Pure Dark Chocolate 85% Cocoa bar)—to address the problem.

 

By the deadline, only Trader Joe’s had responded.

 

“Trader Joe’s stands by the safety of its products,” Dawn Sestito, a partner at O’Melveny & Myers LLP, a law firm that serves as counsel for the company, wrote in a letter to CR. “It considers nothing to be more important than the health and safety of customers,” the letter said, adding, “of course Trader Joe’s takes this matter seriously—and in fact, has been working on it for years.”Trader Joe’s took issue with CR’s food safety experts using California’s maximum allowable dose levels (MADL) in its analysis. The company says that these levels are meant to create an “ample margin of safety,” meaning that it takes higher levels than these to definitively cause harm.

 

CR’s experts disagree. “Consistent consumption of a food that exceeds the MADL for lead or cadmium can compromise the safety margin,” says Tunde Akinleye, the CR food safety researcher who led the chocolate testing project. “And for lead, there is no exposure level for young children to which an adverse health effect has not been identified.”

 

Cadmium and lead can accumulate in the body, and the best way to protect public health against the long-term health effects of these metals is to reduce exposure, he says: “We believe that the MADLs are the most health-protective limits.”

 

Trader Joe’s also pointed to the fact that California created new levels specifically for metals in chocolate when chocolate manufacturers settled a lawsuit related to products exceeding the MADL as one part of the settlement.

 

The company’s response is “an example of how companies try to confuse consumers into believing a legal standard is the same as a public health standard,” says Brian Ronholm, CR’s director of food policy. “It’s important for these companies to address this problem because consistent, long-term exposure to even small amounts of heavy metals can be harmful.”

 

Akinleye notes that the levels agreed on in the lawsuit settlement are significantly higher than the MADL, and that “we do not believe or agree that changing the permissible level of lead or cadmium in a food mitigates the risks the food may pose to consumers.” And, he adds, “not only is it better to have heavy metals levels that are as low as possible in food, our tests show that it’s possible to make dark-chocolate bars that do not exceed the original MADL threshold.”

 

>Five of the 28 bars we tested—from Mast, Taza, Valrhona, and two from Ghiradhelli—were below that level for both metals. For that reason, CR continues to urge manufacturers to do more to get metals out of chocolate.

 

“As for the companies that have not responded, it’s disappointing that they chose not to respond because it could give the impression that they are not interested in addressing an important public health issue,” Ronholm says.

 

In the meantime, consumers can help protect themselves by choosing chocolates with lower levels of heavy metals and by thinking of chocolate as a treat. Someone who eats a serving a few times a week instead of every day is unlikely to be exposed to high levels of heavy metals from chocolate alone.

NASA's Hubble telescope observed the latest series of mysterious dark spots on Saturn's rings.

Scientists have observed these "spokes" for decades but don't know their origin or cause.

NASA said Saturn is approaching a key point in its orbit that may make them more common.

 

Saturn's rings hold a secret that has mystified scientists for decades.

 

Strange dark shadows, called spokes, occasionally appear and disappear on the planet's rings.

 

NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft first observed Saturn's spokes in 1981, and other instruments, including Cassini and Hubble, have spotted them multiple times before.

 

The latest sighting was in October when Hubble spotted several dancing around the ringed planet.

 

Scientists have an idea of what they are and what causes them, but aren't certain.

 

Spokes have a "ghostly appearance" and rotate with Saturn's rings as they orbit the planet, NASA said in a statement.

 

And while they may look small compared to Saturna's rings, spokes can grow to lengths longer than our entire planet, NASA said.

 

What are Saturn's spokes?

Scientists suspect that spokes have something to do with interactions between Saturn and the sun.

 

Similar to Earth, Saturn has a magnetic field that surrounds the planet. And that magnetic field is susceptible to the charged particles in the solar wind that our sun regularly fires into space.

 

So when the solar wind smashes into Saturn's magnetic field at a million miles per hour, it's going to have some effects, like generating aurora borealis on Saturn's poles.

 

But scientists also suspect it may trigger the right conditions for those ethereal spokes on Saturn's rings to pop up.

 

"The leading theory is that spokes are tied to Saturn's powerful magnetic field, with some sort of solar interaction with the magnetic field that gives you the spokes," Amy Simon, a scientist with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in NASA's statement.

Electrostatic forces may cause dust or ice in Saturn's rings to levitate slightly higher than everything else around them, casting a dark shadow on the material below it, in the form of a spoke, per NASA. But this is just one possible explanation.

 

Astronomers must observe and analyze more spokes to determine what's triggering these mysterious marks.

 

Lucky for them, NASA predicts more spokes will be coming soon. Because even though scientists aren't sure what spokes are, or what causes them, they're fairly certain from observations over the decades that spokes vary with Saturn's seasons.

 

And Saturn's fall season, aka its autumnal equinox, is coming up.

 

When that happens, the planet's tilt allows solar winds to bombard the planet's magnetic field with more force, per Space.com.

 

"We are heading towards Saturn equinox, when we'd expect maximum spoke activity, with higher frequency and darker spokes appearing over the next few years," Simon said in the statement.

 

Saturn's northern hemisphere will reach autumnal equinox on May 6, 2025, per NASA. Perhaps this will be the decade scientists finally solve the spoke mystery, once and for all.

The Czech Republic does not have the courage to publicly respond to Moscow’s claim that missiles made in the country were used by Ukraine to kill civilians, Russia’s deputy envoy to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, said on Sunday.

 

Russia called an urgent meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Saturday, requesting that theCzech delegation attend and “explain whythis country’s ammunition is being used for killing civilians in Belgorod,”Polyansky said.

 

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian troops used Czech RM-70 Vampire multiple rocket launchers to fire at the border city of Belgorod earlier that day, killing at least 22 people and injuring more than 100.

 

Prague declined to take part in the UN meeting. “We refuse to be summoned anywhere by Russia,” Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky wrote on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Moscow of “propaganda.”

 

“When Russia wants to discuss the withdrawal of its occupying troops at the Security Council, we will be happy to come,” Lipavsky wrote.

 

Polyansky fired back on X. “Your cowardice and simple-mindedness have been noted,” the Russian diplomat wrote. “We assume that theCzech Republic will no longer participate in UN Security Council meetingson the issue of Ukraine.”

 

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also blasted Prague’s actions. “I didn’t think that the Czech Foreign Ministry would beso ignorant as to not know how the UN Security Council functions,” she wrote on Telegram.

 

Speaking at the Security Council, Russian envoy Vassily Nebenzia alleged thatUS and British “consultants” helped Kievplan the “premeditated act of terror” against civilians in Belgorod. He warned that those responsible would be “punished.”

 

Ukraine denied the allegations and accused Moscow of “terrorism” after the Russian Air Force carried out large-scale strikes in the neighboring country. According to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, 39 people were killed and nearly 160 were injured during the bombardment on Friday.

 

The Russian MOD stated that it was onlystriking ammunition depots and other military targets. Russian officials further claimed that civilian deaths were caused by the faulty work of Ukrainian air defense systems deployed in residential areas.

According to the ICRC Principles of Distinction between Civilians and Combatants Rule 1, one of the pillars of international humanitarian law permits military commanders to direct operations against military objectives. At the same time, however,Rule 1 also requires that military commanders distinguish between civilian and military object. This concept was already codified in St. Petersburg Declaration of 1868, which states that States engaging in a war should only commit acts that will help them to weaken the military forces of the enemy party.

 

It is the duty of the military commander to determine who civilians are and who military opponents are. At time of war, every military force faces a threat from their opponent; however, it hardly faces threats from civilians. Thus, civilians should not be harmed during any war. It is the duty of the military commander to take such steps and measures as to prevent harm to civilians.

 

How do we define civilians? According to article 50(1) of the Additional Protocol 1 of the Geneva Conventions, 1949, civilians are the persons who do not belong to one of the categories mentioned in articles 4(A)(1)-(3) and 4(A)(6) of the Third Geneva Convention 1949. The categories listed are member of armed forces, member of militias or member of volunteer corps. A person who by any act is not facilitating or acting as part of the armed conflict is a civilian. Additionally, as held by the criminal tribunal in Blaskić, “[i]n case of doubt whether a person is a civilian, that person shall be considered to be a civilian.”Prosecutor v. Tihomir Blaskic, Case No. IT-95-14-A, Judgement, ¶ 111 (Int’l Crim. Trib. for the Former Yugoslavia Jul 29, 2004).

 

According to article 50(3) of the Protocol 1 of the Geneva Conventions 1949, even if a civilian population includes some armed people, still they do not lose their civilian status. For example,if militants enter a park filled with civilians – an attack cannot be launched in the parkeven if intended to only target the militants because under the principle of distinction the civilians ought to be protected. The criminal tribunal in Prosecutor v. Stanislav Galić further confirmed this principle and held that “[a] population may qualify as ‘civilian’ even if non-civilians are among it, as long as the population is predominantly civilian.” Prosecutor v. Stanislav Galić, Case No. IT-98-29-A, Judgement, ¶ 143 (Int’l Crim. Trib. for Former Yugoslavia Nov. 30, 2006).

 

According to article 51 of the Protocol 1 of the Geneva Conventions 1949, the protections civilian enjoy during wartime include:

 

Protection against any danger arising out of military operations.

Civilians should never be the objects of attack. Any act to spread terror among the civilian people is prohibited.

Unless and until civilians take direct part in hostilities, civilians enjoy all the protections mentioned in this article.

Indiscriminate attacks such as attacks not directed against a specific military object, methods or means of combat that are not specifically applied to a military object, attacks which do not distinguish between civilian object and military object.

Any attack done to several military objects, situated within a civilian locality, bombardment upon such area in prohibited. Any act, which might result into suffering of civilians, is prohibited.

Attack towards the civilians by the way of reprisal is prohibited.

Civilians should never be used to shield any military object, to immune it from military operations, by any of the parties.

Under article 8 of the Rome Statute, war crime includes grave breaches of Geneva Conventions of 1949 and also violation of any laws and customs of international laws regarding international armed conflict. As discussed above, Geneva Convention of 1949 made it a crime to kill civilians during war. Article 8 of the Rome Statute re-affirms that position. Thus, killing civilians during war is a war crime.

 

Although international authorities put forth effort to protect civilians, the history speaks for itself – civilians are often not spared. Although, adequate international laws are in place, States engaged in war often overlook this principle of distinction.The law appears clear – civilian killing in war is a crime. The question then is why these international laws are ignored? States have often used the term ‘collateral damage’ to justify the killing of civilians. However, human life is priceless and no cause is big enough to spare innocent human life. The United Nations should find a way to enforce the international laws addressing civilian killing in war for the sake of humanity.

Bob McGwire, a professor at Virginia Tech and with the Institute for Defense Analyses, was carrying out classified work on the USS Hampton submarine when he heard the sound of 'something whizzing by.'

 

The onboard sonar determined the unidentified submerged object (USO) was traveling through the water faster than the speed of sound, he has calimed.

 

Such speeds underwater should have crushed the submarine, according to McGwire, but he said it was as if they were standing still.

 

McGwire said he urged the naval team to report the encounter, but they determined it would hinder the mission.

 

'When I left there with the knowledge in my head, not having been told to be quiet, not having been told it was classified… It is mine to tell whoever I want. They blew it,' McGwire said, noting he would not discuss the classified work done on the sub.'

 

The strange incident happened in the late 1990s, but McGwire recently came forward with the story on the YouTube channel UAP Society, where he wanted to 'blow the whole thing wide open.'

 

The story has also resurfaced online, sparking the attention of many people on social media who 'wonder what it was.'

 

McGwire has not shared what he was doing on the the Navy submarine, the location and depth it was at due to the information being classified.

 

The engagement lasted for just a few seconds, he said.

 

'We were underway, and, all of a sudden, I heard a sound. It is really strange and clear that something is whizzing by us,' said McGwire.

 

The Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine USS Hampton (SSN 767) is assigned to Submarine Squadron 11 in San Diego, California.

 

McGwire boarded the sub from an undisclosed location and snapped a picture before heading down into the depths of the sea.

 

The USS Hampton is limited by how fast it can travel due to the incompressibility of water in front of it, but the USO 'blew by' the sub.

 

'A person with knowledge of onboard systems' who was likely monitoring the sonar tech is said to have announced that something just soared past the submarine faster than the speed of sound, McGwire said during the YouTube interview.

 

Sound travels faster in water, about 3,330 miles per hour because the liquid is about 1,000 times denser than air.

 

The only manmade object comparable would be Russia's Shkval torpedo, but this can only hit speeds of 230 miles per hour.

 

And the fastest sea animal is the sailfish, which can swim 68 miles per hour.

 

Lehto said that McGwire 'has extensive experience in the Navy' and has done work with classified radio frequencies.

 

McGwire has also served as a high-security-clearance intelligence officer and has a Ph.D. from Brown University.

 

While the account is bizarre, McGwire's statements echo the 2021 video showing US Naval personnel having a close encounter with an unidentified flying object (UFO).

The special counsel tries to drag the Justices into his political timetable for the Jan. 6 trial of Donald Trump.

Special counsel Jack Smith's indictments of Donald Trump have made him a central actor in the 2024 election, and now he is dragging the Supreme Court into the political thicket. The Justices don't have to dance to Mr. Smith's timetable, nor to his view of presidential immunity.

 

The Justices this week agreed to consider Mr. Smith's petition for expedited appeal of Mr. Trump's claim that his post-election actions related to Jan. 6, 2021, are shielded by presidential immunity. Mr. Trump's lawyers must file a response to the petition next week. Mr. Smith wants the Court to skip the normal appellate process through the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and rule promptly so the Jan. 6 trial can begin on March 4.

 

Federal trial Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled against Mr. Trump's immunity claim, and the special counsel wants a trial and conviction before Election Day. March 4 is the day before the GOP Super Tuesday primaries, so voters may not know the trial verdict until after Mr. Trump has locked up the nomination.

 

If that trial date holds, Mr. Smith will have helped Mr. Trump win the nomination by spurring a GOP backlash against his charges. The prosecutor will then become a de facto campaign voice for the Democrats in the general election. This is one of the reasons that trying to disqualify Mr. Trump by prosecution was such a mistake.

 

Mr. Smith's prosecution all but assured that the Supreme Court would eventually be hauled into the polarizing election politics, but the Court needn't rush to judgment. There are important issues at stake for the law and presidential power in both the Jan. 6 and document-mishandling cases. (Trial on the latter is scheduled to begin in May.)

 

The special counsel argues that the Court heard the Watergate tapes case in expedited fashion, so it should do so again now. But in U.S. v. Nixon, Richard Nixon was resisting a subpoena. There is no such legal urgency here, only Mr. Smith's desire to meet a political timetable. That is not the Supreme Court's job, and it would be damaging for the Court's credibility if it appears to be acting politically for or against either side.

 

The Court could decide to skip the D.C. Circuit and hear a direct appeal from the two parties. But it should then do so in the normal course of its business, with ample, unrushed time for briefs, friend-of-the-court briefs, and oral argument. The Court could still rule before its current term ends in June. That could mean a trial could begin in the summer, but the trial date is the province of the trial judge and the two parties, not the Supreme Court.

 

The press corps has ignored the presidential immunity claim from the start, but it isn't frivolous. The relevant precedent is Nixon v. Fitzgerald, a 1982 civil case in which the Court ruled 5-4 that Nixon had "absolute Presidential immunity from damages liability for acts within the 'outer perimeter' of his official responsibility"…

 

The implications of the case go beyond Mr. Trump's political fate. In Nixon v. Fitzgerald, the Court recognized the unique pressures and duties of the Presidency. It also noted the risk that the lack of immunity for official acts would "subject the President to trial on virtually every allegation that an action was unlawful." This would hamstring the Presidency…

 

These legal complications mean that Mr. Smith's path to conviction may not be as seamless as he hopes. As we warned Mr. Smith and Attorney General Merrick Garland, indicting Mr. Trump would thrust them into the middle of an election campaign. This would have unintentional and perhaps damaging consequences. The wiser decision would have been to lay out the facts of what the special counsel found and let the voters decide.

 

They chose to prosecute, and the damage has begun to unfold. Let's hope the Supreme Court can fly above the partisanship, and minimize some of the harm.

Born in 1946, Michael Angelo Aquino was a military intelligence officer specializing in psychological warfare.[12] In 1969 he joined Anton LaVey's Church of Satan and rose rapidly through the group's ranks.[13] In 1970, while he was serving with the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, Aquino was stationed in Bến Cát in South Vietnam when he wrote a tract titled "Diabolicon" in which he reflected upon his growing divergence from the Church of Satan's doctrines.[14] In this tract, teachings about the creation of the world, God, and humanity are presented, as is the dualistic idea that Satan complements God.[15] The character of Lucifer is presented as bringing insight to human society,[16] a depiction of Lucifer that was inherited from John Milton's seventeenth-century epic poem Paradise Lost.[17]

By 1971 Aquino was ranked as a Magister Caverns of the IV° within the Church's hierarchy, was editor of its publication The Cloven Hoof, and sat on its governing Council of Nine.[12] In 1973 he rose to the previously unattained rank of Magister Templi of IV°.[12] According to the scholars of Satanism Per Faxneld and Jesper Petersen, Aquino had become LaVey's "right-hand man".[18] There were nonetheless things that Aquino disliked about the Church of Satan; he thought that it had attracted many "fad-followers, egomaniacs, and assorted oddballs, whose primary interest in becoming Satanists was to flash their membership cards for cocktail-party notoriety".[19] When, in 1975, LaVey abolished the system of regional groups, or grottos, and declared that in the future all degrees would be given in exchange for financial or other contributions to the Church, Aquino became increasingly disaffected; he resigned from the organization on June 10, 1975.[20] While LaVey seems to have held a pragmatic and practical view of the degrees and of the Satanic priesthood, intending them to reflect the social role of the degree holder within the organization, Aquino and his supporters viewed the priesthood as being spiritual, sacred and irrevocable.[21] Dyrendal, Lewis, and Petersen describe Aquino as, in effect, accusing LaVey of the sacrilege of simony.[21]

 

Aquino then provided what has been described as a "foundation myth" for his Setian religion.[22] Having departed the Church, he embarked on a ritual intent on asking Satan for advice on what to do next.[23] According to his account, at Midsummer 1975, Satan appeared and revealed that he wanted to be known by his true name, Set, which had been the name used by his worshippers in ancient Egypt.[24] Aquino produced a religious text, The Book of Coming Forth by Night, which he alleged had been revealed to him by Set through a process of automatic writing.[25] According to Aquino, "there was nothing overtly sensational, supernatural, or melodramatic about The Book of Coming Forth By Night working. I simply sat down and wrote it."[26] The book proclaimed Aquino to be the Magus of the new Aeon of Set and the heir to LaVey's "infernal mandate".[27] Aquino later stated that the revelation that Satan was Set necessitated his own exploration of Egyptology, a subject about which he had previously known comparatively little.[28]

Aquino's Book of Coming Forth by Night makes reference to The Book of the Law, a similarly 'revealed' text produced by the occultist Aleister Crowley in 1904 which provided the basis for Crowley's religion of Thelema. In Aquino's book, The Book of the Law was presented as a genuine spiritual text given to Crowley by preternatural sources, but it was also declared that Crowley had misunderstood both its origin and message.[29] In making reference to The Book of the Law, Aquino presented himself as being as much Crowley's heir as LaVey's,[30] and Aquino's work would engage with Crowley's writings and beliefs to a far greater extent than LaVey ever did.[7]

 

In establishing the Temple, Aquino was joined by other ex-members of LaVey's Church,[12] and soon Setian groups, or pylons, were established in various parts of the United States.[12] The structure of the Temple was based largely on those of the ceremonial magical orders of the late nineteenth century, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and Ordo Templi Orientis.[31] Aquino has stated that he believed LaVey not to be merely a charismatic leader but to have been actually appointed by Satan himself

Michael Aquino, the founder of satanic cult the Temple of Set, has “remanifested from his physical body” at the age of 73. In addition to his satanist activities, Aquino was a military intelligence officer.

 

Aquino founded the Temple of Set in 1975 after leaving Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan due to his unhappiness with the direction of the group. A statement on the Temple of Set’s website says that been suffering from ill-health for some years. It’s unclear when exactly Aquino died. A Reddit thread dedicated to Aquino’s death first appeared on June 29.

 

The Temple of Set statement says that Aquino “remanifested from his physical body” on “Sunday, September 1, LIV of the Aeon of Set.” Religious studies expert Dr. Dave Bromley of Virginia Commonwealth University told the BBC in February 2014 that groups such as the Temple of Set are known to follow their own calendar.

 

The public-at-large was first exposed to Aquino during his appearance on The Geraldo Rivera show in 1988. The episode was titled, “Devil Worship: Exposing Satan’s Underground.”

 

According to Aquino’s Amazon profile, Aquino was a retired Lt. Colonel, Psychological Operations in the United States Army. Aquino says that he was a “Green Beret” and a graduate of the U.S. Army Intelligence School and the U.S. Army Space Institute. Aquino says that he received multiple awards during his military career. He retired from the U.S. Army in 2006. Aquino’s Amazon page credits him with writing dozens of books on satanism. Aquino’s IMDb page shows that he has contributed to various documentaries on satanism since 1972, the most recent coming in 2020.

 

Aquino says that he had various qualifications in political science and government-related studies from the University of California Santa Barbara and George Washington University. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity.” The profile ends by saying, “[Aquino] his wife Lilith, and inevitable, innumerable, and immortal cats live in San Francisco, California.”

Aquino Said That He Became Interested in Satanism While Serving in Vietnam

 

In August 1998, a Washington Post profile on Aquino said that he made his first inroads into satanism in the 1970s while he was stationed in Vietnam. Aquino had a correspondence with Satanist Anton LaVey around this time. According to the Post article, Aquino was made a high ranking priest in the Church of Satan upon his return to the United States. The Post article also noted that Aquino had an “abnormally keen interest in the life of Anton LaVey” which extended to Aquino writing an 800-page biography of LaVey.

 

Allegations of Ritualistic Child Abuse Have Followed Aquino & His Followers Since the 1980s

 

Allegations that Aquino and The Temple of Set’s followers were responsible for ritualistic child abuse were first leveled in the 1980s, Wired reported in May 1997.

 

The Los Angeles Times reported in August 1988 that prosecutors had declined to bring charges against Aquino after a 3-year-old girl accused him of molesting her in a home in San Francisco.
