The tension between Rice and Harris had origins in the summer of 2020, when both were being vetted for vice president. Rice later told people she thought Harris and her team were partly responsible for opposition research that resulted in negative coverage of Rice.

Rice appeared to others to take pride in being more informed on the border than Harris.

Some Harris aides found Rice to be disrespectful toward the vice president and dismissively referred to the former UN ambassador as just a "staffer."

Bottom line, America is being led by a man who's too senile to prosecute, and whose administration is completely dysfunctional.

A new study finds that human-caused carbon dioxide emissions are driving increased plant growth that’s greening the Earth, even in areas experiencing drought.

The peer-reviewed study, which was published in the scientific journal Global Ecology and Conservation, finds that the phenomenon known as “global greening” is an indisputable fact. The rate of global greening has increased slightly, and drought has only slowed, but not stopped, the process.

The study, which was done by Chinese and Australian researchers, attributes the greening to carbon dioxide fertilization as well as land management, such as irrigation. The opposite of greening is referred to as browning. The study found that greening acceleration occurred in 55.15% of the globe, while browning occurred in only 7.28%.

“Combined with meteorological variables, we found that CO2 change dominated the LAI [greening] trend,” the authors wrote.

The fact carbon dioxide emissions are stimulating plant growth is not a new finding. In 2016, a study in Nature Climate Change using NASA satellite data found that 25% to 50% of the Earth’s vegetated lands showed significant greening over the previous 35 years from when the study was done.

Gregory Wrightstone, executive director of the CO2 Coalition, told Just The News that global greening is among benefits of global warming that are ignored and dismissed because it doesn’t fit a narrative that climate change is causing a crisis.

“There’s a lot of people who make a lot of money on the backs of the false notion of a pending climate crisis,” Wrightstone said.

The CO2 Coalition, whose membership includes scientists with a variety of academic backgrounds — including Dr. John Clauser who won the Nobel Prize in 2022 — argues that climate change is not a crisis and can produce net positive benefits.

The group’s views of climate change have not been welcomed in mainstream circles. “I understand the benefit of carbon dioxide, because I took eighth grade science,” Reynolds said.

Reynolds said that the benefits of anything can come with costs and tradeoffs, but on balance, greening of the Earth is a positive outcome of carbon dioxide emissions.

Evan Gershkovich was detained in Russia for allegedly trying to obtain state secrets, the security service said

A correspondent working for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in Russia has been arrested in the city of Ekaterinburg in the Urals, the FSB security service announced on Thursday.

Evan Gershkovich, whopreviously worked for the Moscow Times and AFP in the Russian capital, has been accused oftrying to collect intelligence about a defense industry factory, in violation of Russia’s laws on state secrets, the statement said. If charged with espionage, the journalist could face between 10 and 20 years in prison.

Chemists use blockchain to simulate more than 4 billion chemical reactions essential to origins of life

Cryptocurrency is usually "mined" through the blockchain by asking a computer to perform a complicated mathematical problem in exchange for tokens of cryptocurrency. But in research appearing in the journal Chem a team of chemists has repurposed this process, asking computers to instead generate the largest network ever created of chemical reactions which may have given rise to prebiotic molecules on early Earth.

 

This work indicates that at least some primitive forms of metabolism might have emerged without the involvement of enzymes, and it shows the potential to use blockchain to solve problems outside the financial sector that would otherwise require the use of expensive, hard to access supercomputers.

 

"At this point we can say we exhaustively looked for every possible combination of chemical reactivity that scientists believe to had been operative on primitive Earth," says senior author Bartosz A. Grzybowski of the Korea Institute for Basic Science and the Polish Academy of Sciences.

 

To generate this network, the researchers chose a set of starting molecules likely present on early Earth, including water, methane, and ammonia, and set rules about which reactions could occur between different types of molecules. They then translated this information into a language understandable by computers and used the blockchain to calculate which reactions would occur over multiple expansions of a giant reaction network.

 

"The computer takes the primordial molecules and the accepted prebiotic chemistries. We coded it into the machine, and then we released it onto the world," says Grzybowski.

 

Grzybowski's team worked with chemists and computer-specialists at Allchemy, a company that uses AI for chemical synthesis planning, to generate the network using Golem, a platform that orchestrates portions of the calculations over hundreds of computers across the world, which receive cryptocurrency in exchange for computing time.

 

The resulting network, termed NOEL for the Network of Early Life, started off with more than 11 billion reactions, which the team narrowed down to 4.9 billion plausible reactions. NOEL contains parts of well-known metabolic pathways like glycolysis, close mimics of the Krebs cycle, which organisms use to generate energy, and syntheses of 128 simple biotic molecules like sugars and amino acids.

 

Curiously, of the 4.9 billion reactions generated, only hundreds of reaction cycles could be called "self-replicating," which means that the molecules produce additional copies of themselves. Self-replication has been postulated to be central to the emergence of life, but the vast majority of its known manifestations require complex macromolecules like enzymes.

 

"Our results mean that with only small molecules present, self-amplification is a rare event. I don't think that this type of self-replication was operative on primitive Earth, before larger molecular structures were somehow formed," says Grzybowski. "We see emergence of primitive metabolism, but we don't see self-replication, so maybe self-replication appeared later in evolution."

 

"If you asked me two years ago, I'd be thinking we'd need years for this type of work," says Grzybowski. "But for a fraction of the cost, in two or three months, we finished a task of 10 billion reactions, 100k times bigger than we did previously."

 

This work not only advances what we know about early prebiotic chemistry, but it also demonstrates how science can be made more accessible to researchers at smaller universities and institutions.

 

"Our system of education is based on elite universities mostly in the western world. It's very hard for the developing world to even compete with these universities because they don't have access to supercomputers," says Grzybowski. "But if you can distribute computing in this way for a fraction of the cost, you can give other people opportunities to play."

 

While the network generated in this work was performed on hundreds of computers around the world, Grzybowski suggests that this method can be used at institutions without having to pay out cryptocurrency tokens to the computers performing the calculations.

 

"With a platform like Golem you can connect your institution's network and harness the entire idle power of its computers to perform calculations," says Grzybowski. "You could create this computing infrastructure without any capital expenditure."

 

''Grzybowski hopes that repurposing the blockchain in this way can revolutionize the way we perform large scale calculations across the world and change how we see the value of cryptocurrency.''

 

"I hope people in computer science can figure out how can we tokenize cryptocurrencies in some way that can benefit global science," says Grzybowski. "Maybe society could be happier about using cryptocurrencies, if you could tell people that in the process we could discover new laws of biology or some new cancer drug," says Grzybowski.

Trump CO ballot case. Twice during oral arguments, two different justices (if I heard who was speaking correctly) dropped the phrase "natural born citizen" - even though Trump's case is not about citizenship at all. It was about engaged in insurrection…. so why drop natural born citizen?

 

Arguments in part centered around timing. At what point in time is it appropriate to challenge whether or not someone is eligible to be president?

 

I found the slips interesting, potentially revealing what is on their mind in terms of a larger issue besides Trump. Many of the challenges to Obama being qualified went nowhere. Some were frivolous arguments. There were two cases that involved the "natural born citizen" argument. One was in the NE and tossed out on a technicality; the other was in TN, with the Judge seemingly suddenly ruling against the case for a b.s. reason. The issues of "natural born citizen" remains unresolved.

 

Yet, the Supremes twice dropped the phrase in oral arguments. Why? Timing.

 

Trump's attorney argued that the correct timing is after someone has won the general election, before they are sworn in. (Obama's natural born citizen challenges came in after he was sworn in, if memory serves me correctly.)

 

So what is on deck now? Kamala Harris is not a natural born citizen.

Dems realize Biden can not be their candidate; they need to remove him, because he isn't withdrawing. The media has started to mentally prepare the public that Biden isn't going to be their candidate. Maybe. Other MSM op eds lean towards leaving Biden in thru the end of this term.

Arrest

On March 29, 2023, the counterintelligence department of the Federal Security Service(FSB) detained Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg while he was on a reporting trip for having information on a "Russian defence enterprise". According to U.S. officials, Gershkovich's driver dropped him off at a steakhouse at 4 p.m.[17] and two hours later, his phone was turned off. The Wall Street Journal hired a lawyer to find him at the FSB's headquarters but couldn't locate him.[18] The Kremlin confirmed his arrest hours later. Dmitri Peskov, Russian president Vladimir Putin's press secretary, said that he was "caught red-handed" but could not provide further details.[19] (not “could not”, they “would not”) He was transferred to Moscow where he was formally arrested by a district court until May 29. He was then taken to Lefortovo Prison, a holding facility used by the Soviet Union to detain Soviet dissidents.[20] He was formally charged on April 7.[21] United States ambassador to Russia Lynne M. Tracy met with Gershkovich on April 17 and wrote that he is "in good health and remains strong".[22]

 

Gershkovich was detained by Russia's Federal Security Service under charges of espionage,[23][24][25] marking the first time a journalist working for an American news outlet has been arrested in Russia on charges of spying since the Cold War.[9]According to NPR, a court, operating in closed session, ordered Gershkovich held until the end of May while investigations were ongoing.[26] According to Kommersant, he was scheduled to be transferred to Lefortovo prison while awaiting trial.[26] A conviction for espionage could carry a sentence of 20 years.[7][9][27]

 

Gershkovich appealed his arrest on April 3.[28] A judge denied his appeal and rejected an offer from The Wall Street Journalpublisher Dow Jones to post a bond of 50,000,000₽ (US$600,000). Gershkovich's lawyers said he was reading Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace (1869) and watching cooking shows on monastery cuisine.[29] In a handwritten letter from April 5 obtained by The Wall Street Journal, Gershkovich said he was "not losing hope".[30] He appeared in Moscow City Court on April 18 to appeal his pre-trial detention.[31] A Moscow court extended his detention to August 30 on May 23, where Gershkovich's parents met him.[32]

The timeline of Kamala’s parents coming to the US, her birth, parents divorce and mom moving to Canada where she went to high school, her father working for the Jamaican govmt while also working here, and their naturalization comes from many different sources. An official in Kiev wants to dig up the tomb of Imperial Russian PM Pyotr Stolypin and use his remains as a bargaining chip

 

A Ukrainian proposal toremove the remains of Tsarist-era Russian Prime Minister Pyotr Stolypin from its burial placein the heart of Kiev and exchange it with Moscow for prisoners of war is sacrilegious, Russian State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin has said.

 

In an emotional post on social media on Tuesday, the senior Russian lawmaker condemned the idea, which was floated in a TV interview last week by the recently appointed director of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, a state-owned monastery that isconsidered one of the holiest Orthodox Christian sites in Ukraine.

 

Last year Maksym Ostapenko became the chief custodian of the Lavra, which was split into a secular museum and a religious section, after the government in Kiev pressured the traditional Ukrainian Orthodox Church to vacate the premises.

 

As Stolypin’s tomb inside in the Lavra, Ostapenko has authority over it. Speaking to the TV channel TSN,he described the grave as an “imperial Russian marker” and expressed his intention to remove it.

 

“One of the ideas is to include him in the exchange pool, regardless of how it would look” the official suggested. “We have dead heroes. We have living heroes who were captured. We have Ukrainian dignitaries buried on the territory of Russia.”

 

Volodin responded that Russia could not accept such a proposal. Stolypin, he noted, survived multiple assassination attempts and was fully aware that his life could end violently, so he explicitly asked to be buried wherever he would be killed.

 

In 1911, when the prime minister was accompanying Tsar Nicolas II during a visit in Kiev, the 11th attempt on his life proved successful. A radical anarchist managed to get close to Stolypin by becoming a security informant, and shot him. The prime minister succumbed to his injuries days later and was buried at the Lavra, in accordance with his wishes.

 

In the 1960s, his tombstone was removed by Soviet authorities, allegedly on the personal orders of Communist leader Nikita Khrushchev. It was moved back and restored, close to the original form, in the final years of the USSR.

 

Stolypin is an unpopular figure for Ukrainian nationalists, who maintain a strong influence in the country. Just days before his 1911 assassination, he delivered an impassioned speech on the graves of two 17th century cossack figures, who opposed Ivan Mazepa, the then-leader of the Zaporozye Host.

 

Mazepa betrayed his oath of loyalty to Russian Tsar Peter I and sided with the Kremlin’s opponents, an act for which he was condemned in Moscow and is considered a national hero in modern Kiev.Stolypin, a devoted Russian patriot, hailed the loyalty of Mazepa’s rivals to the Romanovs.

Kremlin comments on Starlink claims

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has denied Ukrainian allegations that he supplied satellite internet terminals to Moscow

 

The Russian military never officially ordered SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet terminals and they are not certified for use in Russia, the Kremlin has said. Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made the comment shortly after Ukrainian intelligence claimed that Russian forces were using the technology amid the ongoing armed conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

 

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk donated some 20,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine shortly after Russia launched its offensive against the country in February 2022. Ukrainian troops are using them to operate drones along the front line. However, the billionaire said last year that he had refused Ukraine’s request to activate the Starlink service in Crimea.

 

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Peskov noted that Starlink had never been certified in Russia, meaning that it “cannot be and is not being delivered hereofficially.” He added that, for this reason, the technology cannot be used in any official capacity in Russia.

 

The Kremlin’s representative concluded by saying that there was no point in Moscow getting involved in a “discussion between the Kiev regime and entrepreneur Musk.”

 

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Musk lamented that “a number of false news reports claim that SpaceX is selling Starlink terminals to Russia.”

 

“To the best of our knowledge, no Starlinks have been sold directly or indirectly to Russia,”the SpaceX CEO added.

 

In a separate statement on Thursday,SpaceX insisted that it “does not do business of any kind with the Russian government or its military,” and has “never sold or marketed Starlink in Russia, nor has it shipped equipment to locations in Russia.”

 

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) claimed to have intercepted a conversation between Russian military personnel, where one service member could be heard saying in Russian “Starlink is working, we have internet [access].” (Did they ever think Ukraine is stupid and left their network open to hacking?)

 

GUR spokesman Andrey Yusov alleged that Russian troops are “systematically” using Starlink terminals.

 

In September, Musk said his company had refused to enable Starlink coverage over Crimea. “Now, the reason it was turned off was actually because… the United States has sanctions against Russia… and that includes Crimea,” he explained at the time. In the absence of any direct orders from the US leadership, SpaceX opted not to run afoul of the regulations despite Kiev’s request to do so, the entrepreneur noted.

 

Earlier, CNN reported that Musk’s decision had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack against the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

The CEO of a major Nigerian bank, along with his wife and son, were among six people killed in a helicopter crash in the Mojave Desert near the California-Nevada border late Friday night.

 

Access Bank chief executive Herbert Wigwe died in the crash, the bank confirmed in a statement on X.

 

Wigwe’s wife and son and the former group chairman of the Nigeria Stock Exchange, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, were also killed in the crash, World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said in a post on X.

 

Authorities said both of the helicopter’s pilots were also killed.

 

The chartered Airbus EC130 helicopter was flying from Palm Springs, California, to Boulder City, Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas, according to National Transportation Safety Board member Michael Graham.

 

The aircraft, which was operated by California-based charter company Orbic Air, took off around 8:45 p.m. and crashed just after 10 p.m. near Interstate 15 in Halloran Springs, California, Graham said.

 

The helicopter caught fire upon impact, Graham added, citing witness reports. Witnesses also reported rain and a wintry mix when the crash happened, he said.

 

The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash and was at the scene in Halloran Springs, California, Saturday night collecting evidence, Graham said at a news conference.

 

At a Sunday NTSB news conference, Graham confirmed there was precipitation at the time of the crash, noting the helicopter descended from an altitude of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet, sped up, and “impacted the terrain in a nose low and right bank angle.”

 

The debris field was 100 yards in length, and all major components of the aircraft were accounted for and identified at the crash site, Graham said. The wreckage will be moved to a “secure location” Tuesday, he added.

 

Authorities have yet to publicly identify the people killed but condolences have been pouring in for the Wigwe family and Ogunbanjo.

Russians have had to dumb down their speeches at the UN so other countries can understand them, deputy representative Dmitry Polyansky has said

 

Russian diplomats perceive their Western counterparts' approach to international affairs to be “quite primitive,” Moscow’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyansky, has said. Moscow's representatives are not certain what caused this,but have simplified their messaging in response, he added.

 

Polyansky made remarks about the quality of the Western diplomatic corps in an interview with RIA Novosti published on Monday, based on his personal experience at the UN. He expressed concern about Anglophone speakers at the forumselectively ignoring the contextof particular situations for their own benefit.

 

”They pick an arbitrary point in time and claim nothing happened before it.They try to blame a nation for its actions regardless of prior events or the general context,” he explained.

 

The diplomat cited the Ukraine conflict as an example. The US and its allies have been describing Moscow’s military action against Kiev as “unprovoked” and supposedly motivated by “imperial ambitions,” and have pressured other nations to frame it in the same way. As they learn more about the conflict, however, those parties realize how much the general context and Western actions since Ukraine gained its independence matter, he added.

 

”This trick does not always work, but it is a trend. I don’t know if it’s some deeper trend or just something typical for some people coming from [Western] schools of diplomacy,” Polyansky said. “Having a dialogue with them is challenging because they show certain superficiality, tunnel vision, and unwillingness to seek the core causes of conflicts. No solutions can be found without [such analysis].”

 

The office of the Russian envoy to the UN has been simplifying its addresses due to uncertainty over how their words are understood, he said. Russian diplomats used to quote foreign and Russian classics in speeches, but are no longer using this rhetorical device as much, Polyansky said.

 

”Times dictate things. Our partners may now be less well-read individuals, so occasionally we want to speak in plainer terms to make sure our signal comes through,” he explained.

WASHINGTON — The landmark 1899 post office tower on Pennsylvania Avenue — the second-tallest building in Washington — looked out of place in the Federal Triangle of neoclassical government buildings constructed mostly in the 1930s.

 

To complete the Triangle in an architecturally compatible style, the government wanted to tear it down, leaving only the building’s clock tower to rise above its replacement in homage to the Richardsonian Romanesque structure that would be no more.

It was in fact Diana's passing that prompted Dorante-Day to go public with the information he had as part of the investigations into her death. He approached the British authorities who he says took his claims very seriously.

 

"We were in Lismore, NSW, in 2004 after Diana. I sent a letter to the Metropolitan Police saying I believed I was Charles and Camilla's son and whether it would have any ramifications in the case about Diana's death," said Dorante-Day.

 

"And at 2am they asked me to write a statement and fax it back as soon as possible.

 

"I was making submissions to the Paget Enquiry and as a result Charles got questioned a second time during the enquiry - and it was after my letter was sent, and I believe this is why."

 

Dorante-Day says it was his maternal grandmother who revealed the alleged truth to him. Both she and her husband had worked for the Royals and it was she who collected him for adoption.

 

If true, it is worth pointing out that Dorante-Day would be Charles' eldest son.

NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than 12:49 a.m. EST Wednesday, Feb. 28, for the launch of the agency’s SpaceX Crew-8 mission to the International Space Station. The launch of Crew-8 was adjusted to deconflict operations with Intuitive Machines’ IM-1, the company’s first lunar lander mission to the Moon as part NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, currently targeted for Wednesday, Feb. 14. NASA and SpaceX will continue to assess Crew-8 readiness and may adjust the Crew-8 launch date following a successful IM-1 launch.

 

“The Commercial Crew Program has been following along with the IM-1 mission preparations, and we are wishing the Intuitive Machines and SpaceX teams all the best ahead of this extremely complex mission to the lunar surface,” said Steve Stich, program manager for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

 

NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt, and Jeanette Epps, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin will lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to perform research, technology demonstrations, and maintenance activities aboard the space station. Crew-8 is the eighth crew rotation mission with SpaceX to station, and the ninth human spaceflight as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

NASA Solar Sail Technology Passes Crucial Deployment Test

In his youth, NASA technologist Les Johnson was riveted by the 1974 novel “The Mote in God’s Eye,” by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven, in which an alien spacecraft propelled by solar sails visits humanity. Today, Johnson and a NASA team are preparing to test a similar technology.

 

NASA continues to unfurl plans for solar sail technology as a promising method of deep space transportation. The agency cleared a key technology milestone in January with the successful deployment of one of four identical solar sail quadrants. The deployment was showcased Jan. 30 at Redwire Corp.’s new facility in Longmont, Colorado. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, leads the solar sail team, comprised of prime contractor Redwire, which developed the deployment mechanisms and the nearly 100-foot-long booms, and subcontractor NeXolve, of Huntsville, which provided the sail membrane. In addition to leading the project, Marshall developed the algorithms needed to control and navigate with the sail when it flies in space.

 

The sail is a propulsion system powered by sunlight reflecting from the sail, much like a sailboat reflects the wind. While just one quarter of the sail was unfurled in the deployment at Redwire, the complete sail will measure 17,780 square feet when fully deployed, with the thickness less than a human hair at 2 and a half microns. The sail is made of a polymer material coated with aluminum.

 

NASA’s Science Mission Directorate recently funded the solar sail technology to reach a new technology readiness level, or TRL 6, which means it’s ready for proposals to be flown on science missions.

 

“This was a major last step on the ground before it’s ready to be proposed for space missions,” Johnson, who has been involved with sail technology at Marshall for about 25 years, said. “What’s next is for scientists to propose the use of solar sails in their missions. We’ve met our goal and demonstrated that we’re ready to be flown.”

 

A solar sail traveling through deep space provides many potential benefits to missions using the technology because it doesn’t require any fuel, allowing very high propulsive performance with very little mass. This in-space propulsion system is well suited for low-mass missions in novel orbits.

 

“Once you get away from Earth’s gravity and into space, what is important is efficiency and enough thrust to travel from one position to another,” Johnson said.

 

Some of the missions of interest using solar sail technology include studying space weather and its effects on the Earth, or for advanced studies of the north and south poles of the Sun. The latter has been limited because the propulsion required to get a spacecraft into a polar orbit around the sun is very high and simply not feasible using most of the propulsion systems available today. Solar sail propulsion is also possible for enhancing future missions to Venus or Mercury, given their closeness to the Sun and the enhanced thrust a solar sail would achieve in the more intense sunlight there.

 

Moreover, it’s the ultimate green propulsion system, Johnson said – as long as the Sun is shining, the sail will have propulsion. Where the sunlight is less, he envisions a future where lasers could be used to accelerate the solar sails to high speeds, pushing them outside the solar system and beyond, perhaps even to another star. “In the future, we might place big lasers in space that shine their beams on the sails as they depart the solar system, accelerating them to higher and higher speeds, until eventually they are going fast enough to reach another star in a reasonable amount of time.”

Parts of Greenland are becoming green again for the first time since the Vikings visited nearly 1,000 years ago, according to study co-author Jonathan Carrivick, an Earth scientist at the University of Leeds in the U.K.

 

And where there was once snow and ice just a few decades ago, there are now areas of shrub, along with barren rock and wetlands, the study reports.

 

How much ice has melted?

An estimated 11,000 square miles of Greenland’s ice sheet and glaciers have melted over the last three decades, the study reports.

 

Overall, the total area of ice loss in the past 30 years is slightly greater than the size of Massachusetts and represents about 1.6% of Greenland’s total ice and glacier cover.

 

“Warmer temperatures are linked to the land cover changes that we are seeing on Greenland," Carrivick said in a statement. "By analyzing high-resolution satellite images, we have been able to produce a detailed record of the land cover changes that are taking place.”

Vikings' records suggest vegetation was 'more extensive then'

The last time Greenland was this green was "possibly during the Medieval Warm Period," (roughly 900 to 1,300 A.D.), Carrivick told USA TODAY. "The ice sheet was less extensive then than today, and it is likely vegetation was more extensive then, too, as the Viking records suggest."

 

Why does ice on Greenland matter?

Why should we care about what happens in Greenland? In addition to its local impacts on people, flora and fauna, "the loss of ice mass in Greenland is a substantial contributor to global sea level rise, a trend that poses significant challenges both now and in the future," said study lead author Michael Grimes, also of the University of Leeds.

The Department of the Air Force on Feb. 12 unveiled a long-term vision to revamp personnel, operations, and technology efforts with the goal of reshaping the Air Force and newly formed Space Force to concentrate resources squarely on strategic competition with China.

 

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said priorities have to change for the era of great power competition. Service leaders discussed a planned series of initiatives during a panel at the Air & Space Forces Association’s Warfare Symposium in Aurora, Colorado.

 

Great power competition generally refers to the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China. This competition encompasses not just military might, but also economic influence and technological advancement. China’s rapid military modernization and assertive foreign policy have placed it at the forefront of this competition, prompting the U.S. to re-evaluate its own strategic posture.

 

Kendall said the Air Force and Space Force will streamline operations and prioritize critical areas like technology integration, cyber expertise, and software development, all to ensure the Air Force and Space Force are prepared for the complex challenges of the 21st century.

 

The announcement comes as the Pentagon seeks to move on from legacy structures optimized for counterterrorism operations that dominated since 9/11, and prioritize what it now labels “integrated deterrence” against major rivals like China and Russia.

 

China’s growing arsenal of long-range missiles and anti-satellite weapons, in particular, threatens American supremacy in areas like air combat and space-enabled intelligence, Kendall has pointed out.

 

He described the overhaul as a multi-year endeavor but said there is no time to waste. “We are out of time,” Kendall stressed.

 

Space Force priorities

 

Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman compared the journey ahead for the Space Force to that of a merchant marine that needs to be more like a navy.

 

Speaking at the AFA conference, Saltzman said the service will introduce training and education programs tailored for an area when space is a contested, not a benign, environment.

 

In decades past, he said, “the space domain was relatively secure, it was pretty safe. And our job was to provide services to the joint force from that domain … And now we find ourselves in a contested domain. We have to be able to secure the domain so that we can continue to use it and protect the joint force from space-enabled targeting.”

 

Training programs have to change, said Saltzman. “We have to be able to give our people the training, the education, the experiences that they’re going to need to be successful in the high tech environment that they’re going to face.”

 

The Space Force will redesign its officer training course so programs for satellite operations, cyber operations and intelligence are not separated into stovepipes. “If the satellite operator doesn’t understand the networks that disseminate the data and doesn’t understand how to provide that data in a threat environment, they are not going to be successful,” said Saltzman.

 

On the procurement side, there will be greater focus on resiliency against threats, he said. “The merchant marine didn’t have the right equipment to be a navy. Likewise, the systems that we’ve built were designed for a benign environment. A new study finds that human-caused carbon dioxide emissions are driving increased plant growth that’s greening the Earth, even in areas experiencing drought.

 

The peer-reviewed study, which was published in the scientific journal Global Ecology and Conservation, finds that the phenomenon known as “global greening” is an indisputable fact. The rate of global greening has increased slightly, and drought has only slowed, but not stopped, the process.

 

The study, which was done by Chinese and Australian researchers, attributes the greening to carbon dioxide fertilization as well as land management, such as irrigation. The opposite of greening is referred to as browning. ''The study found that greening acceleration occurred in 55.15% of the globe, while browning occurred in only 7.28%.''

 

“Combined with meteorological variables, we found that CO2 change dominated the LAI [greening] trend,” the authors wrote.

 

The fact carbon dioxide emissions are stimulating plant growth is not a new finding. In 2016, a study in Nature Climate Change using NASA satellite data found that 25% to 50% of the Earth’s vegetated lands showed significant greening over the previous 35 years from when the study was done.

 

Gregory Wrightstone, executive director of the CO2 Coalition, told Just The News that ''global greening is among benefits of global warming that are ignored and dismissed because it doesn’t fit a narrative that climate change is causing a crisis.''

 

“There’s a lot of people who make a lot of money on the backs of the false notion of a pending climate crisis,” Wrightstone said.

 

The CO2 Coalition, whose membership includes scientists with a variety of academic backgrounds — including Dr. John Clauser who won the Nobel Prize in 2022 — argues that climate change is not a crisis and can produce net positive benefits.

 

The group’s views of climate change have not been welcomed in mainstream circles. In March 2022, the group had purchased a booth at the National Science Teaching Association’s annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Though the booth had been approved, the group was ejected after attendees complained about their literature.

 

In 2018, a New York Times article argued that global greening, in the long run, is “terrible.” The reporter interviewed scientists who said that plants that take in more carbon dioxide may also release more of the gas at night in a process known as respiration. Plants stimulated with carbon dioxide, which some growers deliberately pump into their greenhouses to increase plant growth, may also be less nutritious.

 

The Times article speculates this could lead to widespread diseases from nutrient deficiencies. Since 1970, however, undernourishment in developing countries has steadily declined.

 

Jeff Reynolds, senior investigative researcher with Restoration of America, recently published a two-part investigative report on the entire climate debate, He told Just The News that benefits of increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and global warming are often denied.

 

“I understand the benefit of carbon dioxide, because I took eighth grade science,” Reynolds said.

 

Reynolds said that the benefits of anything can come with costs and tradeoffs, ''but on balance, greening of the Earth is a positive outcome of carbon dioxide emissions.''

The Small Bodies Nomenclature Working Group (WGSBN) – the folks responsible for assigning names to minor planets and comets – last week published a bulletin [PDF] in which it gave 29 small celestial bodies their very own names.

 

One of the newly named bodies has been given the moniker "Zoozve" and it is remarkable – for several reasons.

 

One is that it's the first identified quasi-satellite of a major planet.

 

Zoozve is an asteroid that, as described by its discoverers in a 2005 paper, has an orbit that "takes it quite far afield from Venus – it dives in towards the Sun, passing within the orbit of Mercury, and travelling outwards just beyond the orbit of the Earth at its furthest from the Sun." That path traces a shape that resembles a butterfly shape that comes about because the asteroid and Venus are travelling around the Sun nearly in lock-step.

 

"This means that VE68 has a very special property as seen from Venus," the paper states. "It appears to travel around the Venusian sky about once every Venus year. If you didn't know that VE68 is really travelling around the Sun, you might declare that Venus has a moon (or satellite) of its own."

 

The first name given to the object was VE68 and it was later given the designation 2002 VE68.

 

While the asteroid is the first of its kind to be observed in such an orbit, it's small, poses no danger to Earth, and did not excite the public imagination at the time.

 

But it did catch the eye of an artist named Alex Foster, who drew it on a poster of the solar system he designed for children and depicted it as a moon of Venus. He also misread the name of the asteroid and turned “2002 VE” into "Zoozve"

 

As beautifully told by Space.com, scientist and podcaster Latif Nasser saw the poster and became intrigued by Zoozve. Nasser eventually lobbied for 2002 VE68 to be formally named “Zoozve."

 

And succeeded.

 

The WGSBN bulletin contains several other whimsical names, including:

 

Pitufo, aka 1981 ET27, named for the Spanish word for "Smurf";

Curupira, aka 2016 HL, named for "a Brazilian indigenous folklore legendary creature, whose main purpose is to protect the forest against hunters and poachers";

Gabaldon, aka KY65, named for the scientist and author Diana J Gabaldon who wrote the Outlander series of novels and is also the great-granddaughter of Stanley Sykes, who built the telescope used to discover Pluto.

New Looming EV Disaster Begins to Emerge

If all of the existing headaches for those pushing expensive electric vehicles on resisting American consumers could vanish, there’s still a big one that may have no ready solution.

 

Already, it appears the U.S. could end up dependent on unfriendly nations for materials for all those batteries. Then there’s the fact that the nation’s grid simply can’t support all that recharging – California already has been sending out advisories for owners not to charge. And then there’s the limited range, extended recharging times, both worsened by bad weather.

 

But now a report in the Washington Times explains that those batteries are heavy, and EVs can weight up to 50% more than internal combustion motor vehicles.

 

And that weight damages roads, bridges and parking garages, with those vehicles easily plowing through safety guardrails while posing a higher danger to other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists traveling the same routes.

 

“The problems associated with EVs are poised to grow as more consumers purchase the cars under the Biden administration’s plan to eliminate gas-powered vehicles and the tailpipe emissions that come with them,” the report explained.

 

It explained engineers writing recently for Structure Magazine suggested construction companies, and building codes, need to make accommodation for the higher weight.

 

Parking garages, they said, should be redesigned to hold more weight.

 

That’s because some hold hundreds of vehicles, and just one EV. A Ford truck, weighs in at 8,240 pounds, nearly a ton more than the gas-powered version of the same pickup.

 

“Significantly increasing passenger vehicle weights combined with recently reduced structural design requirements will result in reduced factors of safety and increased maintenance and repair costs for parking structures,” the engineers wrote. “There are many cases of parking structure failures, and the growing demand for EVs will only increase the probability of failure.”

 

Then there are those guardrails, installed to minimize damage when traffic goes awry.

 

They are installed between lanes for traffic moving opposite directions, between lanes and edge drop-offs and more.

 

That concern comes out of a procedure at a test facility in Nebraska, where examiners took a 3.6-ton Rivian R1 and sent it into a metal guardrail at 62 mph, first headon, then at an angle.

 

Both times it “ripped through” the guardrail and continued into what would have been lanes for oncoming traffic, the report revealed.

 

The conclusion was simple: making vehicles much heavier means “a lot more force” is required to redirect the vehicle.

 

University of Nebraska professor Cody Stolle, told the Times, “We found these guardrail systems don’t have great compatibility with these [electric] vehicles yet.”

 

The heavier vehicles also could cause more damage to other vehicles in collisions.

 

The report said an insurance institute expert confirmed the weight provides more protection to those inside the EV, but at the expense of anyone in another vehicle involved in an accident.

 

Joe Biden has insisted over and over that consumers should be buying the much more expensive and often less reliable electric cars the government programs subsidize.

 

The weight differences are significant. The report said the Tesla Model Y is more than 4,400 pounds while the similar size gas-powered Honda Accord is 3,300. Kia makes multiple SUVs, with the gas model weighting 3,900 pounds and the EV unit nearly 6,500.

 

Residential roads already are not engineered to handle the heavy weight on highways, and the lifespan of bridges could be reduced with much heavier traffic, the report said.

 

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., recently said, “EVs are typically much heavier compared to similarly sized, gas-powered vehicles, which will put additional strain on America’s transportation infrastructure. The American Society of Civil Engineers warns that an increase in EVs could substantially reduce the lifespan of roads and bridges, necessitating further investment in infrastructure.”
