Anons, this whole thing stinks like Nikki Haley. Almost guaranteed she’s connected somehow. After reading 5 articles, (none about her positive), I’m fairly convinced she was involved in the setting this bank account up.

 

• Look at the amount of debt she had/has.

• She is an accountant, who would come up with the idea of setting up a state account that no one knew about.

• These are the type of things Cartels do, or very devious politicians

• Was it used as a slush fund for personal or other uses?

 

Call to Dig, too many narrative stories she’s told the media, they are different every time. I’ve found a ton of really negative articles about her as Governor in SC, in the Union, her parents and her financial problems, contradictions of who was broke from one article to the others. A lot of lies, and extreme incompetence.

While appearing in the Lowcountry on Thursday, Gov. Nikki Haley said the investigation into the hacking of millions of Department of Revenue records is nearly complete.

 

The number of residents originally affected by the massive breach was thought to be 3.6 million. But WLTX reported that number has been revised upward to 3.8 million.

 

The Charleston Post & Courier reported that the hacker used two vulnerabilities to access the data. But experts disagreed about what the state could have done to protect the data.

 

The state also is expected to pay public relations firm Chernoff Newman $150,000 to prepare press packets and buy newspaper advertisements related to the data theft.

The recorded surveillance concludes on July 6, 2019 - the day of Epstein’s final arrest.

 

Now, however, 11,279 coordinates obtained by WIRED show not only a flood of traffic to Epstein’s island property - nearly a decade after his conviction as a sex offender - but also point to as many as 166 locations throughout the US where Near Intelligence infers that visitors to Little St. James likely lived and worked. The cache also points to cities in Ukraine, the Cayman Islands, and Australia, among others.

 

Near Intelligence, for example, tracked devices visiting Little St. James from locations in 80 cities crisscrossing 26 US states and territories, with Florida, Massachusetts, Texas, Michigan, and New York topping the list. The coordinates point to mansions in gated communities in Michigan and Florida; homes in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts; a nightclub in Miami; and the sidewalk across the street from Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

 

The coordinates also point to various Epstein properties beyond Little St. James, including his 8,000-acre New Mexico ranch and a waterfront mansion on El Brillo Way in Palm Beach, where prosecutors said in an indictment that Epstein trafficked numerous “minor girls” for the purposes of molesting and abusing them.

US Military Offers First Glimpse of Training for Ukrainian Troops in America

The military lockdown on information about U.S. training of Ukrainian troops has been near absolute, with reporters blocked from access to American service members' work in Poland and even training efforts in the United States.

 

But on Tuesday, March 21, reporters were allowed to watch Ukrainian students set up and initialize an entire Patriot missile battery at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, part of a training program that was announced in January.

 

Army officials allowed no photos and no interviews with the Ukrainians. On this day, reporters were permitted only to interview U.S. Army officials and, except for only a few high-ranking officers, were required to list trainers as "senior officers" and "senior military trainers."

 

The Army held the event on a windswept, rainy plain as a detachment of these Ukrainian missile defense trainees established a perimeter, wheeled in an AN/MPQ-53 radar, a command Engagement Control Station (ECS), a generator, and several boxy M901 and M903 missile launchers. In 45 minutes, they established a protective area of a little more a half-mile radius surrounding the site.

 

It was good set-up time, said a senior military trainer. "Doctrinally speaking, this should take longer, but …" he snapped his finger for emphasis, "…they are on it."

 

It was their knowledge and background with the older Russian-made S-300 missile defense system that helped them use the American system, but there was an added edge, said one senior military official.

 

"I will tell you that there is a sense of realism that makes a sense of urgency," said another senior officer. "Not to say we don't have that all the time, but it's increased. You know that when they go in, they are under threat."

 

The sense of urgency fed both the trainees and their instructors. The effort started when 65 Ukrainian trainees arrived on Jan. 15, and training began two days later. Just a few days in and it became clear that, although most of the trainees spoke some English, the highly technical language of radars, missiles and doctrine meant that the two interpreters assigned would not be enough. A call was put out throughout the U.S. Army to bring Ukrainian and Russian speakers into the effort, and 18 very motivated language specialists showed up. It upped the tempo of the training.

 

"We were able to increase, increase, and increase the level of knowledge on the training, based on their capability, but also their desire, motivated by that existential threat they are facing. Our soldiers understand that as well," the senior official said.

 

The Ukrainians are combat tested on the S-300 system, a capable air defense weapon developed by the former Soviet Union and fielded by numerous Eastern Bloc countries. The trainees already understand basic and overlapping coverage and layers, and how to counter Russian cruise missiles, Unmanned Air Systems (or drones), and ballistic missiles. They had the S-300 system. They understand radar theory. They understand the physics involved in an engagement.

 

For that reason, the Army was able to train the Ukrainians on more advanced scenarios, ones that normally require a 30-week study time, the senior official said. But the Ukrainians got it all in 10 weeks.

 

The trainees were restricted to Fort Sill, like all foreign forces at the base, but were given complete access to amenities such as the bowling alley, the Shoppette, the PX and other on-base entertainment. The trainees also met regularly for off-time cookouts with their American trainers, engaging in cultural exchanges. During one, the trainees decided to give their trainers a taste of real Ukrainian borscht, a national soup made of beets. It's an acquired taste, said one senior trainer.

 

These team-building exercises were important, he said, because they needed to build unit cohesion. While the Ukrainians were all from the same country, they were not from the same units and needed to develop that layer of trust with one another as well as the trainers.

 

The weight of what the Ukrainians are fighting for back in their home country was underscored as the anniversary of the start of the war, Feb. 24, 2022, passed during their stay at Fort Sill. The trainers and trainees gathered for an observance dinner.

 

With their graduation date approaching quickly the actual date is classified, the trainers said most expressed concern about their students, but also admiration for their knowledge and innate abilities.

NSF Paid Universities To Develop AI Censorship Tools For Social Media

The National Science Foundation is paying universities using taxpayer money to create AI tools that can be used to censor Americans on various social media platforms, according to members of the House.

 

University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and MIT are among the universities cited in the House Judiciary Committee and the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government interim report.

 

It details the foundation’s “funding of AI-powered censorship and propaganda tools, and its repeated efforts to hide its actions and avoid political and media scrutiny.”

 

“NSF has been issuing multi-million-dollar grants to university and non-profit research teams” for the purpose of developing AI-powered technologies “that can be used by governments and Big Tech to shape public opinion by restricting certain viewpoints or promoting others,” states the report, released last month.

 

Funding for the projects began in 2021 and was issued through the NSF’s Convergence Accelerator grant program, which was initially launched in 2019 to develop interdisciplinary solutions to major challenges of national and societal importance such as those pertaining to AI and quantum technology, it states.

 

In 2021, however, the NSF introduced “Track F: Trust & Authenticity in Communication Systems.”

 

The NSF’s 2021 Convergence Accelerator program solicitation stated the goal of Track F projects was to “develop prototype(s) of novel research platforms forming integrated collection(s) of tools, techniques, and educational materials and programs to support increased citizen trust in public information of all sorts (health, climate, news, etc.), through more effectively preventing, mitigating, and adapting to critical threats in our communications systems.”

 

Specifically, the grant solicitation singled out the threats posed by hackers and misinformation.

 

That September, the select subcommittee report notes, the NSF awarded “twelve Track F teams $750,000 each (a total of $9 million) to develop and refine their project ideas and build partnerships.” The following year, the NSF selected six of the 12 teams to receive an additional $5 million each for their respective projects, according to the report.

 

Projects from the University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin-Madison, MIT, and Meedan, a nonprofit that specializes in developing software to counter misinformation, are highlighted by the select subcommittee.

 

Collectively, these four projects received $13 million from the NSF, it states.

 

“The University of Michigan intended to use the federal funding to develop its tool ‘WiseDex,’ which could use AI technology to assess the veracity of content on social media and assist large social media platforms with what content should be removed or otherwise censored,” it states.

 

The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Course Correct, which was featured in an article from The College Fix last year, was “intended to aid reporters, public health organizations, election administration officials, and others to address so-called misinformation on topics such as U.S. elections and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.”

 

MIT’s Search Lit, as described in the select subcommittee’s report, was developed as an intervention to help educate groups of Americans the researchers believed were most vulnerable to misinformation such as conservatives, minorities, rural Americans, older adults, and military families.

 

Meedan, according to its website, used its funding to develop “easy-to-use, mobile-friendly tools [that] will allow AAPI [Asian-American and Pacific Islander] community members to forward potentially harmful content to tiplines and discover relevant context explainers, fact-checks, media literacy materials, and other misinformation interventions.”

 

According to the select committee’s report, “Once empowered with taxpayer dollars, the pseudo-science researchers wield the resources and prestige bestowed upon them by the federal government against any entities that resist their censorship projects.”

 

“In some instances,” the report states, “if a social media company fails to act fast enough to change a policy or remove what the researchers perceive to be misinformation on its platform, disinformation researchers will issue blogposts or formal papers to ‘generate a communications moment’ (i.e., negative press coverage) for the platform, seeking to coerce it into compliance with their demands.”

 

Efforts were made via email to contact senior members of the three university research teams, as well as a representative from Meedan, regarding the portrayal of their work in the select subcommittee’s report.

 

Paul Resnick, who serves as the WiseDex project director at the University of Michigan, referred The College Fix to the WiseDex website.

 

“Social media companies have policies against harmful misinformation. Unfortunately, enforcement is uneven, especially for non-English content,” states the site. “WiseDex harnesses the wisdom of crowds and AI techniques to help flag more posts [than humans can]. The result is more comprehensive, equitable, and consistent enforcement, significantly reducing the spread of misinformation.”

 

A video on the site presents the tool as a means to help social media sites flag posts that violate platform policies and subsequently attach warnings to or remove the posts. Posts portraying approved COVID-19 vaccines as potentially dangerous are used as an example.

 

Michael Wagner from the University of Wisconsin-Madison also responded to The Fix, writing, “It is interesting to be included in a report that claims to be about censorship when our project censors exactly no one.”

 

According to the select subcommittee report, some of the researchers associated with Track F and similar projects, however, privately acknowledged efforts to combat misinformation were inherently political and a form of censorship.

 

Yet, following negative coverage of Track F projects, depicting them as politically motivated and their products as government-funded censorship tools, the report notes, the NSF began discussing media and outreach strategy with grant recipients.

 

Notes from a pair of Track F media strategy planning sessions included in Appendix B of the select subcommittee’s report recommended researchers, when interacting with the media, focus on the “pro-democracy” and “non-ideological” nature of their work, “Give examples of both sides,” and “use sports metaphors.”

 

The select subcommittee report also highlights that there were discussions of having a media blacklist, although at least one researcher from the University of Michigan objected to this, citing the potential optics.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Biden administration on Friday announced a major expansion of temporary legal status for Ukrainians already living in the United States, granting a reprieve for those who fled Russia’s invasion.

 

The move is expected to make166,700 Ukrainians eligible for Temporary Protected Status, up from about 26,000 currently, the Homeland Security Department said. To qualify, Ukrainians must have been in the United States by Aug. 16, two days before the announcement. They are eligible for work authorization.

 

The temporary status was originally scheduled to expire on Oct. 19, 2023 but is being extended 18 months to April 19, 2025.

 

“Russia’s ongoing military invasion of Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crisis requires that the United States continue to offer safety and protection to Ukrainians who may not be able to return to their country,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

 

The expansion comes as the administration extends Temporary Protected Status to people from a growing number of countries, including Cameroon, Haiti and Venezuela, as part of a carrot-and-stick approach to immigration that combines more legal entries on humanitarian grounds with more punitive measures against anyone who enters the country illegally.

 

A 1990 law allows the Homeland Security secretary to grant status in increments of up to 18 months to people already in the United States whose countries are struck by civil strife or natural disaster and are considered unsafe for return.

 

Ukrainians first got Temporary Protected Status immediately after Russia’s invasion.

 

The administration added humanitarian parole for those not in the United States, a move that it considered so successful that it later did the same for people from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

 

Friday’s announcement gives additional time to Ukrainians whose two-year parole was due to expire early next year.

 

Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans face more uncertainty.

 

Texas and other Republican-led states are challenging parole for up to 30,000 people a month from those four countries but is not contesting status for Ukrainians. A trial is scheduled next week in Victoria, Texas.

 

Ukrainian immigrants are dispersed widely across the United States, with the largest concentrations in the New York, Chicago, Seattle and Sacramento, California, metropolitan areas.

When Esmita Spudes Bidari was a young girl in Nepal, she dreamed of being in the military, but that wasn’t a real option in her country. Last week, she raised her right hand and took the oath to join the United States Army Reserves, thanks in part to a recruiter in Dallas who is also Nepalese and reached out to her through an online group.

 

Ms. Bidari, who heads to basic training in August, is just the latest in a growing number of legal migrants enlisting in the U.S. military as it more aggressively seeks out immigrants, offering a fast track to citizenship to those who sign up.

 

Struggling to overcome recruiting shortfalls, the Army and the Air Force have bolstered their marketing to entice legal residents to enlist, putting out pamphlets, working social media, and broadening their outreach, particularly in inner cities. One key element is the use of recruiters with similar backgrounds to these potential recruits.

 

“It is one thing to hear about the military from locals here, but it is something else when it’s from your fellow brother, from the country you’re from,” said Ms. Bidari, who was contacted by Army Staff Sgt. Kalden Lama, the Dallas recruiter, on a Facebook group that helps Nepalese people in America connect with one another. “That brother was in the group and he was recruiting and he told me about the military.”

 

The military has had success in recruiting legal immigrants, particularly among those seeking a job, education benefits, and training as well as a quick route to becoming an American citizen. But they also require additional security screening and more help filling out forms, particularly those who are less proficient in English.

 

Both the Army and the Air Force say they will not meet their recruiting goals this year, and the Navy also expects to fall short. Pulling more from the legal immigrant population may not provide large numbers, but any small boosts will help. The Marine Corps is the only service on pace to meet its goal.

 

The shortfalls have led to a wide range of new recruiting programs, ad campaigns, and other incentives to help the services compete with often higher-paying, less risky jobs in the private sector. Defense leaders say young people are less familiar with the military, are drawn more to corporate jobs that provide similar education and other benefits, and want to avoid the risk of injury and death that service in defense of the United States could bring. In addition, they say that little more than 20% meet the physical, mental, and character requirements to join.

 

“We have large populations of legal U.S. residents who are exceptionally patriotic, they’re exceptionally grateful for the opportunities that this country has provided,” said Air Force Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, head of the service’s recruiting command. The biggest challenges have been identifying geographic pockets of immigrant populations, finding ways to reach them, and helping any of those interested navigate the complex military recruiting applications and procedures.

 

Last October, the Army reestablished a program for legal permanent residents to apply for accelerated naturalization once they get to basic training. Recruiters began to reach out on social media, using short videos in various languages to target the top 10 countries that recruits had come from during the previous year.

 

The Air Force effort began this year, and the first group of 14 graduated from basic training and were sworn in as new citizens in April.

 

They included recruits from Cameroon, Jamaica, Kenya, the Philippines, Russia, and South Africa. As of mid-May, there were about 100 in basic training who had begun the citizenship process and about 40 who had completed it.

Mr. Thomas said the program required changes to Air Force policy, coordination with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and a careful screening process to ensure there are no security risks.

 

“We have to take exceptional measures to be able to thoroughly vet and go through the security clearance investigation,” he said, adding that in many cases the immigrants are not immediately put in jobs that require top secret clearance.

 

Under the new program, recruits are quickly enrolled in the citizenship system and when they start basic training, an expedited process kicks off, including all required paperwork and testing. By the time Air Force recruits finish their seven weeks of training, the process is complete and they are sworn in as American citizens.

 

The first group of 14 included several who are seeking various medical jobs, while another wants to be an air transportation specialist. Mr. Thomas said Airman 1st Class Natalia Laziuk, who emigrated from Russia nine years ago, has dreamed of being a U.S. citizen since she was 11, and learned about the military by watching American movies and television.

 

“Talking to this young airman, she essentially said, ‘I just wanted to be useful to my country,’” he said. “And that’s a story that we see played over and over and over again. I’ve talked to a number of these folks around the country. They’re hungry to serve.”

 

For Ms. Bidari, who arrived in the U.S. in 2016 to attend college, the fast track to citizenship was important because it will make it easier for her to travel and bring her parents to the U.S. to visit. Speaking in a call from Chicago just a day after she was sworn in, she said she enlisted for six years and hopes that her future citizenship will help her become an officer.

 

In Chicago earlier this year, Army Secretary Christine Wormuth heard from several recruiters about the increased outreach to immigrant communities and how it helped them meet their numbers. In the 2022 budget year, they said, the Chicago recruiting battalion enlisted 70 legal permanent residents and already this year they have enlisted 62.

 

More broadly across the Army, close to 2,900 enlisted during the first half of this budget year, compared with about 2,200 during the same period the previous year. The largest numbers are from Jamaica, with 384, followed by Mexico, the Philippines, and Haiti, but many are from Nepal, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic.

 

“As a little girl, looking at the soldiers, I always had admiration for them,” said Ms. Bidari, recalling British troops in Nepal. “Yesterday, when I was able to take that oath … I don’t think I have words to really explain how I was feeling. When they said, ‘Welcome future soldier,’ I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this is happening.’”

March 28, 2024 (SAINT PAUL) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has joined a coalition of 13 attorneys general in sending a letter that tells Glock, Inc. to preserve all evidence related to its line of Glock pistols, which can be easily converted into illegal machine guns with just one small, easy-to-make modification.

 

Attorney General Ellison and the coalition sent the letter to Glock in the wake of the gunmaker being sued by the City of Chicago. In that lawsuit, filed March 19, Chicago alleges that Glock has known that the guns can be easily adapted into a machine gun with the addition of an auto sear — a cheap, small device commonly known as a “Glock switch.” The City said that machine guns have become “a weapon of choice for criminals in Chicago.”

 

Glock has known that the ability to carry out this do-it-yourself conversion is built into its handgun design, and has refused to make meaningful design changes to fix this problem, the lawsuit alleges. Chicago is seeking a court order requiring Glock to end sales of these easily converted pistols to Chicago civilians and to put in place reasonable controls, safeguards and procedures to prevent their unlawful possession, use and sale.

 

“Everyone has a role to play in stopping the epidemic of gun violence. Individual offenders must be held accountable — and companies that turn a blind eye to their role in perpetuating the epidemic must be, too,” Attorney General Ellison said. “Attorneys general across the country have broad civil-law authority to protect the people of our states and we will not hesitate to use it if our states’ laws have been broken.”

 

According to Chicago’s complaint, Glock switches allow pistols to fire up to 1,200 rounds per minute — a rate as fast as or faster than many fully automatic firearms and machine guns used by the United States military. Yet the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives reports that more than 5,400 machine-gun conversion parts were seized between 2017 to 2021 — a frightening 570% increase from the prior five-year period.

 

The letter says that if Chicago’s factual allegations about Glock are true, Glock’s conduct “may also involve violations of our States’ laws. We will not hesitate to enforce our laws when they are violated.” To that end, Attorney General Ellison and the coalition are asking Glock to preserve all documents related to:

 

the modification of Glock handguns, through the use of switches, to fire automatically, including but not limited to those converted handguns’ use in crime or violence, impact on public safety, or prevalence;

how Glock pistols are designed and developed to function as a semiautomatic weapon, any efforts Glock may have taken or considered to reduce the capability to be converted easily, and the possibility of any design changes;

Glock’s knowledge about all state and federal laws relating to Glock switches and converted Glock machine guns, their legal responsibility as a manufacturer of these guns, and whether they followed these laws and met their responsibility;

financial details about Glock pistols, including profits, manufacturing, and distribution costs, as well as expenses relating to alternative designs that were available or considered;

 

any public marketing or advertising related to Glock pistols, including any claims about their safety, lethality, modularity, semiautomatic function, or the speed at which they fire.

 

Joining Attorney General Ellison in the letter are New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, who led the coalition, and the attorneys general of Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Wednesdayfor the first time accepted personal blame for a massive cyber-attackthat stole the Social Security and bank account numbers of millions of South Carolinians, sayingshe should have done more to ensure the data’s security.

 

Haley briefed the state’s congressional delegation on thealmost two-months-long hacking into South Carolina Department of Revenuecomputer servers by digital thieves, who pilfered the tax returns of 3.8 million state residents and 700,000 businesses going back to 1998, gaining access to the Social Security numbers and bank accounts of the taxpayers and 1.9 million of their dependents.

 

Haley faulted the Internal Revenue Service for failing to make clear that compliance with the giant tax agency’s rules doesn’t include encryption – a method of storing data that protects it from long-distance ID theft – but she acknowledged that as the state’s top executive officer, it was her responsibility to know that. “I ultimately am saying that South Carolina is at fault for not doing this,” Haley said. “I should have asked the extra question. I should have said, ‘Does this include encryption?’ ”

 

Before updating the state’s federal lawmakers, Haley addressed a closed meeting of the Republican Governors Association, where she warned some governors and business leaders of hacking threats. “What I’m going to do is go and educate all my governors and say, ‘Don’t settle for the IRS saying you’re compliant, because what they aren’t telling you is their rules are archaic,’ ” she said at a news conference.

 

“They’re not saying that being compliant doesn’t include actually encrypting those numbers, and no governor knows that right now. And so we’re working hard to get that out there.”

 

In a recent letter to the IRS, Haley called its cyber-security standards outdated and asked the agency and all states to encrypt taxpayer data in servers. The IRS said in a statement last week that it used “a variety of safeguards – including encryption.”

 

Thehacking began in late August after an unidentified South Carolina Department of Revenue employee clicked on a link in an email, which installed dangerous software – called “phishing malware” – on the employee’s computer. The data thieves used the malware to obtain the employee’s login and password for accessing electronic tax returns,and then downloaded the returns over the next seven weeks, until a Secret Service probe stopped the operation.

 

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said the episode demonstrated that protecting the computers at federal agencies and private businesses was a national security imperative. “One of the things that keeps me up at night – besides the Iranians getting a nuclear weapon – is a major cyber-attack against our national-security infrastructure: our power plants, our chemical plants, our aviation systems, our financial systems,” Graham said. “The threat is real. Terrorists are trying to hit us every day (as well as) China, Russia, hostile nations.”

Haley repeated assurances that all South Carolinians whose data was compromised will get letters from the state informing them of the security breach and outlining steps they can take to protect themselves from further harm. Social Security numbers, which sell from $10 to $20 apiece on the black market, can be used to obtain driver’s licenses and other key forms of identification.

 

The state is paying for consumers to get free one-year credit monitoring and up to $2 million in identity theft insurance, plus lifetime credit-fraud resolution. The protection, for which almost 850,000 people have signed up, is supplied by the Experian credit agency at a cost of $12.5 million to the state.

 

The South Carolina Bankers Association has asked banks to be on guard against large checking or savings account withdrawals, especially those that empty the accounts. The South Carolina Department of Revenue is now encrypting digital data, and Haley has asked the state inspector general to recommend how to improve technology policies at state agencies.

Michigan’s Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is facing backlash for her rent subsidies for illegals program after an illegal border crosser allegedly murdered a woman.

A previously deported illegal alien, identified as Brandon Ortiz-Vite, was arrested and charged with the murder of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia in Kent County, Michigan. The illegal from Mexico was charged with felony murder, open murder, carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony possession of a firearm for the March 22 incident.

Ortiz-Vite stands accused of murdering Ruby Garcia and leaving her body beside the road on U.S. Highway 31.

With the news of the arrest still so recent, Whitmer is taking heat for her program, which provides $500 per month for housing assistance to private homeowners who agree to take in migrants.

The program, called the Newcomer Rental Subsidy, is set to provide shelter aside from state shelters for “refugees.” The assistance would be available to homeowners for up to a year, according to MLive.com.

“Payments will be made in three-month installments; first payment will be issued upon the application being approved,” the state subsidy guidance explains. “Additional payments will be made thereafter.”

Republicans in the state are blasting Whitmer over the program.

Tudor Dixon, who ran for governor as a Republican in 2022, blasted Whitmer, saying that she is “enabling Joe Biden’s open border policies by handing out cash to anyone who will take in unvetted illegal immigrants, undoubtedly risking the safety of our neighborhoods and communities,” according to Fox News.

“After the murder of Ruby Garcia less than a week ago, Whitmer should immediately cancel this program and demand Biden secure the border for the good of Michigan citizens,” Dixon added.

Russian Warships Enter the Red Sea

Russian warships from the Pacific Fleet have crossed the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and entered the Red Sea, the state-run Tass news agency said, venturing into a maritime region plagued by Houthi attacks and crowded with naval vessels.

 

The detachment included the missile cruiser Varyag and frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, Tass reported Thursday, citing the Russian Pacific Fleet’s press service, which said the ships were carrying out “assigned tasks within the framework of the long-range sea campaign.” The ultimate destination of the ships was unclear from the report, as was the reason Russia sent vessels to the area.

 

For months, the Yemen-based Houthis have carried out a series of attacks on vessels in the Red Sea in retaliation for Israel’s military actions in Gaza, forcing many ships to redirect their journeys. The group told China and Russia earlier this month that their ships can sail through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden without being attacked. In exchange, the two countries may provide political support to the Houthis in bodies such as the United Nations Security Council, according to several people with knowledge of the militant group’s discussions.

 

The Houthis, an Islamist group, say they’re targeting ships linked to Israel, the US and UK. Yet, they appear to have mis-identified some vessels. Missiles exploded near a ship hauling Russian oil near Yemen in late January. It happened days after a spokesman for the Houthis told a Russian newspaper that Russian and Chinese merchant ships needn’t fear attacks.

 

The Houthis also fired a missile at Chinese-owned oil tanker Huang Pu on Saturday, US Central Command said, highlighting continued risks to shipping in the seas off Yemen despite the agreement.

 

Since the attacks started, most Western shipping firms have avoided the strait and are instead going around southern Africa. However, US and UK warships in the Red Sea have been hitting Houthi targets in Yemen for weeks in an attempt to deter the militant group from attacks on merchant vessels, while Iran, which supports the Houthis, has a spy ship just outside the Red Sea. A French ship is also nearby.

 

Earlier this month, Iran, Russia and China held joint naval exercises in the Indian Ocean, according to Russia’s Defense Ministry. Both the Varyag and Marshal Shaposhnikov took part in the drills, which Russia said were meant to practice “safety in maritime economic activities,” including liberating ships hijacked by pirates.

 

Russia has also sought a naval base on the Red Sea in Sudan, though a civil conflict in that country may put back those plans.

Bud Light Backlash Will Cost Brands Up to 15% of Shelf Space

(Bloomberg) – Bud Light’s comeback hopes are about to get dashed in the beer aisle.

Major grocery chains are just starting an annual spring rite: reshuffling the alcohol aisle to give more space to top sellers. That reset means fewer feet of shelf space for Bud Light, which hasn’t fully recovered from a conservative-led backlash over its collaboration last year with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

 

In the first big shelf reset since Bud Light’s sales nosedived, Anheuser-Busch InBev NV is likely to lose valuable real estate where it can catch consumers’ attention in stores — as much as 15%, according to one estimate.

 

“Anheuser-Busch’s beers will lose a range of about 10% to 15% of their space nationally as resets start,” said Jesse Ferber, chief strategy officer at Columbia Distributing, which serves Washington and Oregon and works with major retailers including Walmart and Target. Ferber estimates that most of that will come out of Bud Light and Budweiser, based on conversations with national retailers and competing brewers.

 

The estimate, while early and informal, suggests the slide the brand has experienced for years could continue. Data from Circana, which tracks retail sales, shows the Mulvaney incident only helped accelerate the ascendancy of a competitor, Constellation Brands Inc.’s Modelo, to surpass Bud Light as the top-selling beer in the US by dollar volume.

 

Ferber said Anheuser-Busch’s strong portfolio and deep pockets mean it isn’t likely to lose too much brand share. Given regional preferences for beers, some regions might see its brands lose only 5% to 6% of shelf space, while others could see numbers as high as 17% to 18%, he said. Final numbers won’t be known until May or June, he said

The steep forecast losses align with what a major competitor said it expects to gain.

 

“We expect our core brands — Coors Light, Miller Lite and Coors Banquet — to grow shelf space by more than 10% in the largest US grocery and convenience retailersthis spring over last year,” said Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s president of US sales, Brian Feiro. He called shelf space one of the main “leading indicators of retail success” for beer.

 

But grocery shelves aren’t the be-all, end-all. Bud Light is also sold widely at bars, restaurants and stadiums. And Anheuser-Busch has just had some major marketing wins, including Olympics and Ultimate Fighting Championship sponsorships, which may help convince retailers to hold space for it. The company also recently averted a strike threat.

“With respect to shelf space, there are typically small shifts across brands during resets,” the spokesperson said, adding that Bud Light and Michelob Ultra are “the top two share-of-space brands in the beer industry.”

 

Bud Light, a value-priced beer, is still America’s top-selling brand by overall volume sold, Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Kenneth Shea pointed out, citing data from Circana. Overall for beer, while dollar sales have grown slightly from 2022 to 2023, sales by volume have slipped, Circana’s data shows.

 

Shelf-space losses this spring will build on an unusually volatile year for the beer aisle.

Graves threatened to seek more prison time for the J6ers if the Supreme Court reverses the obstruction statute this summer.The high court announced it will hear oral arguments in Fischer v. United States and at issue is statute 18 USC §1512(c)(2):

 

Whoever corruptly—

(1) alters, destroys, mutilates, or conceals a record, document, or other object, or attempts to do so, with the intent to impair the object’s integrity or availability for use in an official proceeding; or

(2) otherwise obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

 

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision on Fischer v United States this summer which means hundreds of J6 cases could be upended.Biden’s corrupt DOJ has charged more than 300 J6ers with 18 USC §1512(c)(2).

Additionally, two of the four charges against Trump in Jack Smith’s DC case are conspiracy to obstruct so the Supreme Court’s ruling could torpedo the special counsel’s case against Trump as well.

 

If the Supreme Court reverses the statuteand jailed J6ers ask for release,the DOJ will respond with a request for consecutive sentences and enhancements.

“Ultimately, none of the Government’s arguments involve any facts specific to Seefried. Instead, they are purely class-based. People who have already gone to prison, as a class, cannot be released. January 6th defendants, as a class, cannot be released during an election year,” McFadden wrote.

 

McFadden continued, “In the end, if specific facts about Seefried lead the Government to believe that he is imminently likely to engage in criminal conduct, options remain open to the Government.But without those facts, the Court cannot deprive a citizen of his liberty based on guesswork alone.”
