Meet the Falconer Trying to Convince Trump That Biden Killed Navy SEALs

‘I AM RUTHLESS’

The story of the man behind the bin Laden conspiracy theory shared by Trump might just be more convoluted and outrageous than his claims of body doubles and blood sacrifice.

With less than three weeks before Election Day and the coronavirus pandemic still raging, Donald Trump wants voters to consider some very important things.

Like did Osama bin Laden survive the 2011 Navy SEAL raid on his compound by using a body double, and did former Vice President Joe Biden then order the murder of Navy SEALs to cover that fact up? Did Biden then order the murder of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya to cover that up?

Trump boosted that convoluted conspiracy theory twice on Twitter this week, in one case retweeting a QAnon believer and in another retweeting a fictitious persona run by a militant group opposed to the Iranian government. Trump’s posts infuriated Robert O’Neill, the pro-Trump former Navy SEAL who claims to have killed bin Laden, who accused conspiracy theorists of “trampling on the graves” of soldiers. Pressed on those retweets at an NBC town hall Thursday, Trump said that he didn’t know if the claim that Biden murdered SEALs was true, but that he wanted to “put it out there” for people to consider.

“That was a retweet, and I do a lot of retweets,” Trump said.

The bin Laden conspiracy theory is the creation of falconer Alan Parrot, who claims he discovered the truth about bin Laden and the Navy SEAL murders through his work as a falconer for Middle Eastern monarchs. Now Parrot promises to release “terabytes” of evidence that Biden hid the 9/11 mastermind in Iran and murdered American soldiers, raising the prospect that his conspiracy theories will continue to percolate on the right-wing internet up to the election.

Thanks to a viral video of his claims about Biden, Parrot has risen in the course of just one week from being a controversial falconer little-known outside of ornithology circles to appearing on the president’s Twitter feed.

It’s a story that’s strange even by the standards of 2020 conspiracy theories: one about falcon smuggling, the violent “falcon mafia,” federal informants, and radio tracking devices. It’s also a story about how social media and the overheated politics of 2020 made it possible for a falconer with a history of making outlandish claims to find a mouthpiece in the president.

Parrot has been obsessed with falcons since he was a teenager. The son of a well-known Maine doctor, Parrot flew to Iran after graduating from high school to pursue his falconry sometime in the 1970s, without even owning a picture of a falcon.

Parrot’s claims in the documentary even reached ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos, who asked then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about them in an interview.

“Your question is laughable,” Ahmadinejad said, mocking Stephanopoulos by claiming that he had heard bin Laden was actually hiding in Washington, D.C.

In his movie, Parrot complained that his warnings about bin Laden were ignored by American officials.

“Why is it no one will listen to me?” Parrot asked.

The answer to that question became clear a year later, when members of Navy SEAL Team 6 killed bin Laden—not on a falcon-hunting trip in Iran, but in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

The fact that bin Laden was found in Pakistan, not Iran, might have suggested that Parrot had no idea what he was talking about in Feathered Cocaine. Nine years later, Parrot has emerged with his explanation: it’s because Iran planted bin Laden in Pakistan, with the connivance of Biden and Hillary Clinton.

In a video broadcast publicly for the first time last weekend at the pro-Trump American Priority Conference at Trump’s Miami resort, Parrot claimed bin Laden had been set up in Pakistan for a “trophy kill” arranged by Iranians, Clinton, and Biden. But Iran betrayed the treacherous United States officials, Parrot claims, and swapped bin Laden out with a body double.

“Clinton and Biden outsourced the imprisonment of al Qaeda leaders to Iran,” Parrot says in the video to Benghazi conspiracy theorist Nick Noe and Charles Woods, whose son died in the 2012 Benghazi attack.

From there, Parrot spins an even more convoluted version of the bin Laden story he’s been pushing since 2006. Parrot claims Biden arranged a real attack in Afghanistan in 2011 that killed 25 SEALs and 13 other people.

“Vice President Biden paid with the blood of Seal Team 6,” Parrot said in the video. “He spent their blood like currency.”

Noe chimes in on the video, claiming that the Benghazi attack was then staged to cover up the plotting behind the attack on the SEALs.

O’Neill, the former Navy SEAL involved in the bin Laden raid, has pushed back on Parrot’s cover-up theory, saying that all of the SEALs involved in the operation are still alive.

Still, Parrot’s claims went moderately viral on the right, racking up 200,000 views on YouTube and inspiring articles on conservative blogs. Video of his American Priority talk was first posted on Oct. 11 on alternative social media platform PureSocialTV, but it truly picked up speed when it was embraced by right-wing personality and former Survivor contestant Anna Khait, who posted it on YouTube.

So far, Parrot has shown little evidence to back up his outlandish theory, despite promising to share “terabytes” of proof with Trump. His promoters have cited flimsy bits of evidence, including an envelope Parrot addressed to Biden in 2011, as “proof” that Biden knew about Parrot’s Iran theory.

Parrot has vowed to release more evidence about Biden—and the president has shown no regret about amplifying Parrot’s conspiracy theories.

Parrot, for his part, made clear in the video laying out his conspiracy theory that he’s eager for his claims to find an audience with the president of the United States: “It would be my pleasure and my honor to bring this material to president Trump.”

BANGOR (WGME) – A Maine man will serve no jail time for assaulting an FBI agent.

 

A judge sentenced 69-year-old Alan Howell Parrot of Hancock on Thursday to probation for two years and a $5,000 fine for assaulting a federal officer.

 

FBI agents went to Parrot’s home in Hancock in June 2023 to execute a search warrant.

According to evidence presented at trial, while the agents were trying to enter the home, Parrot tried to close the door and kicked an agent in the abdomen, pushing her backwards, resulting in injuries to her arm and elbow.

 

“Alan Parrot’s attack on an FBI special agent is yet another reminder of the danger law enforcement officers face on a daily basis – and the successful prosecution of Mr. Parrot should serve as a warning to all that if you assault and injure a law enforcement officer, the consequence is a felony conviction. Assaults on officers will be met with a swift response and will not be tolerated,” said Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division.

Now a deal between attorneys for the city and the ship's owner and manager means eight of the crew members could be heading home as soon as Thursday. The city dropped its objections, filed late Tuesday, to the crew members' departure. A federal judge had scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. Thursday to weigh whether to keep them here at least for now. It's not clear whether that hearing will proceed. The eight, including a cook, several seamen, a fitter, an oiler and a general steward, now may be able to fly home.

Regional banks around the U.S. are striking complex and costly bargains with hedge funds, hoping to insulate themselves from a replay of the turmoil that followed Silicon Valley Bank’s failure last year. Wall Street smells a payday.

Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares recently entered into an arrangement to sell investors some of the risk that its borrowers won’t repay their loans. That helps the bank meet new proposed standards meant to make lenders look healthy to regulators. U.S. banks are preparing for new regulations announced last year after the regional-bank failures. They are expected to force midsize banks to meet capital requirements previously only applied to large financial institutions.

 

Historically, U.S. banks created a financial cushion by increasing capital through stock sales, or by selling loans. Many of the loans they own were made when rates were low, meaning they would take a loss if they sold them now. Selling new shares could push already-battered stock prices lower.

Late last year, the Fed gave U.S. banks another option, by letting them increase regulatory capital through risk transfers, a tool long employed by European banks.

 

About 20 U.S. synthetic transactions have been done, totaling $17 billion, compared with about $190 billion in Europe, said Kathy Jones, a structured-products trader at Raymond James. The U.S. could quickly outstrip Europe once smaller, regional banks start adopting the product, she said. Merchants Bancorp, a relatively small Indiana-based lender, got the green light from the Fed this month for a synthetic risk transfer, according to a letter from the regulator.

Banks can transfer risk in two ways:One is selling so-called credit-linked notes to investors, boosting the banks’ balance sheets. Another is purchasing credit insurance from the investors, who post cash as a backstop. The banks pay interest or premiums to the investors. The investors are on the hook for losses from any defaults on the insured loans. Both options cover losses from defaults on as much as 12.5% of a loan pool.

 

That cost drags down profitability, which is already falling. Regional-bank stocks fell last week after Huntington lowered guidance for net interest income, the difference between what it makes from loans and what it pays on deposits. Banks such as JPMorgan Chase and Morgan Stanley issued a flurry of synthetic risk transfers for themselves last fall. Now they are arranging deals for regional lenders—for a fee—and hope to start trading the instruments if the market gets big enough. For money managers, bank risk transfers offer high returns and a new product to pitch to investors eager to buy into the red-hot market for private credit. BlackRock, the private-fund specialist KKR and the French insurer AXA have all published reports hawking them.

It has been nearly 40 years since the Supreme Court indicated in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council that courts should defer to an agency’s reasonable interpretation of an ambiguous statute. After more than three-and-a-half hours of oral argument on Wednesday, it seemed unlikely that the rule outlined in that case, known as the Chevron doctrine, will survive in its current form. A majority of the justices seemed ready to jettison the doctrine or at the very least significantly limit it.

 

The court’s ruling could have ripple effects across the federal government, where agencies frequently use highly trained experts to interpret and implement federal laws. Although the doctrine was relatively noncontroversial when it was first introduced in 1984, in recent years conservatives – including some members of the Supreme Court – have called for it to be overruled.

 

The plea to overturn the Chevron doctrine came to the court in two cases challenging a rule, issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service, that requires the herring industry to bear the costs of observers on fishing boats. Applying Chevron, both the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit upheld the rule, finding it to be a reasonable interpretation of federal law.

While Kiev has enjoyed the support of the US and its allies in the conflict with Moscow, Zelensky has long sought to get approval from more countries for his “peace formula.” The conference in Switzerland was a failure in that respect, with some of the participants refusing to sign the final communique and others withdrawing their signatures.

 

Multiple countries – most notably China – turned down invitations to attend the conference because Russia was not invited, arguing that this rendered any idea of peace talks meaningless from the start. Zelensky’s government has outlawed any talks with the current Russian leadership.

 

Yermak insisted that the Swiss conference had been a success and said the next meeting will be “more representative.” Ukraine is “realistic” and seeks to unite “responsible countries” in support of Zelensky’s formula, he added.

 

Moscow has dismissed Kiev’s proposed peace blueprint as unrealistic and even ridiculous, since it envisioned Russia giving up Crimea, paying reparations and submitting to a war crimes tribunal, among other things. On the eve of the Swiss conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented Moscow’s set of preconditions for peace talks, starting with Kiev’s recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye.

 

According to the Russian ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, the Swiss conference was really intended to soothe doubts about the legitimacy of Zelensky’s government, “which has already been bankrupt for a long time, both politically and economically.”

 

The Ukrainian president’s term officially ended on May 20, and the country’s constitution does not provide for a way to extend it.Meanwhile, some Ukrainian officials have complained that Yermak has been the real power in Kiev and that his purges of rival officials have eroded trust of the West.

What is "Chevron deference" …???

 

Looks like it's all about what the manufacturing industry regulations consider to be a SAUCE of pollution, specifically air pollution. So, this goes to the core of the CO2 argument.

 

Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 (1984), was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court that set forth the legal test for when U.S. federal courts must defer to a government agency's interpretation of a law or statute.[1] The decision articulated a doctrine now known as "Chevron deference".[2] Chevron deference consists of a two-part test that is deferential to government agencies: first, whether Congress has spoken directly to the precise issue at question, and second, "whether the agency's answer is based on a permissible construction of the statute."

 

The decision involved a legal challenge to a change in the U.S. government's interpretation of the word "source" in the Clean Air Act of 1963. The Act did not precisely define what constituted a "source" of air pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) initially defined "source" to cover essentially any significant change or addition to a plant or factory. In 1981, the EPA changed its definition to be mean only an entire plant or factory. This allowed companies to build new projects without going through the EPA's lengthy new review process if they simultaneously modified other parts of their plant to reduce emissions so that the overall change in the plant's emissions was zero. Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmentalist advocacy group, successfully challenged the legality of the EPA's new definition.[3]

 

Chevron is one of the most important decisions in U.S. administrative law. It has been cited in thousands of cases since its issuance in 1984.[4]

 

Thirty-nine years later, in May 2023, the Supreme Court granted certiorari to reevaluate Chevron. Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, No. 22-451. A decision is expected in the first half of 2024.[5]

Yes, Biden’s Department Of Justice Wants To Imprison Peaceful Pro-Lifers For Praying

 

There’s no doubt that the Biden administration is actively threatening Americans with prison time simply for peacefully praying and contending for unborn lives at abortion mills around the country.

 

By the time President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, the federal government had brought fewer than 100 prosecutions since the unconstitutional Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act’s inception in 1994.

 

That’s fewer than four targetings a year under a law that, as Republican Rep. Chip Roy noted in a 2023 letter, “had never been used to indict individuals related to an attack on a pro-life pregnancy center or house of worship.”

 

In 2022 alone, however, more than two dozen pro-lifers were persecuted by the Biden-led Department of Justice with FACE Act charges. Over the last two years, that number has only grown.

 

The Biden DOJ formally kicked off its campaign against Christian pro-lifers when it charged Mark Houck with violating the FACE Act after he protected his son from an angry abortion activist across the street from a Planned Parenthood in 2021. The indictment carried a maximum of up to 11 years in prison with three years of supervised release and fines totaling $350,000.

 

In a clear attempt “to intimidate people of faith and pro-life Americans,” the Biden administration made a showy arrest of Houck at his family home in September 2022 by deploying FBI equipped with battering rams and ballistic shields. His wife and seven children, who were present during the raid, recounted that agents “had big, huge rifles pointed at Mark and pointed at me and kind of pointed throughout the house.”

 

After months of legal battles, Houck was eventually cleared by a federal jury. The dozens of other pro-lifers targeted by the Biden regime, however, were not so lucky.

 

In an extreme expansion of the punishment time often dealt to people protecting unborn babies, prosecutors threatened Lauren Handy and several of her fellow Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) members with up to 11 years in federal prison after they were convicted of allegedly violating the FACE Act and participating in a Conspiracy Against Rights.

 

In May, a U.S. district judge confirmed the 30-year-old must serve 57 months with three years of supervision for her participation in the peaceful protest of one of the most controversial abortion facilities in the nation. Paulette Harlow, one of Handy’s fellow defendants with a “debilitating medical condition,” is expected to be locked up for 24 months for activities such as staying “chained together, praying the Rosary and singing hymns to the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

 

Handy and her crew’s so-called crimes included initiating a “rescue and protest” at late-term abortionist Cesare Santangelo’s Washington, D.C., facility in October 2020. As Handy’s lawyers at the Thomas More Society noted, the 10 defendants “simply kneeled and prayed at Santangelo’s facility, some passed out pro-life literature and counseled abortion-minded women, and others roped and chained themselves together inside the facility.”

 

A similar scenario played out for FACE Act defendants like Paul Vaughn and 87-year-old Eva Edl, who “survived a communist concentration camp.” They were among the 11 pro-lifers who were raided, charged, and convicted for peacefully protesting outside of a Tennessee abortion facility.

Non-Violent J6er Julio Baquero III, Diagnosed With Stage 4 Gastric Cancer While in the Gulags, Has Passed Away

 

In April 2024, after being locked up since August 2023, J6er Julio Baquero found out that he had Stage 4 cancer and, fortunately, was granted compassionate release to go home and begin treatment.

 

Julio was serving an 18-month sentence for exercising his 1st Amendment Right and walking through the US Capitol with doors held open by US Capitol Police. He was non-violent and did no damage while he was in or around the building.

 

Unfortunately, on Father’s Day, June 16th, Julio succumbed to cancer. Julio came out of the gulags incredibly weak and wasn’t able to begin treatment immediately.

 

He spent much of the remaining time he had going in and out of the hospital. He leaves behind his high-school sweetheart, with whom he had three children aged 10, 11, and 20.

I have read hundreds of articles and books, taken university courses in polymer chemistry and collaborated with the worlds best experts. People who have not walked this path, have no standing in empty and malignant opinions - even though they are free and certainly allowed to have them.

 

My strategy to deal with this war is to do what I can to wake people up by showing exactly what I see unadulterated in my clinical practice. I do not know of another currently practicing experienced medical doctor who is actively and daily treating large volumes of patients, certified and trained to give the proposed treatments and who is doing this research work in the open. I am grateful for others who legitimately work to bring this atrocity to light. I feature those people I trust on my substack and in my show, and that silent discernment speaks volumes as to who I find credible and responsible. “The speed and depth of the expanding security ties involving the US adversaries has at times surprised American intelligence analysts. Russia and the other nations have set aside historic frictions to collectively counter what they regard as a US-dominated global system, they said,” the WSJ reported on Wednesday.

 

Washington has accused Pyongyang of “sending workers to Russia to help man weapons production lines,” as well as selling missiles and artillery shells to Moscow, for use against Ukraine.

Video streaming platform Rumble published a video this week of former Google vice president of search products Marissa Mayer admitting that Google Search provides rigged search results.

 

Google, which owns Rumble competitor YouTube, "arranges" the results on its search page in such a way as to prioritize the official narrative on a given issue or topic, Mayer said. And in all cases, Google's products are shown at the very top of any search so they will receive the most hits.

Everything that Google and YouTube show to users is based solely on Google's decision to "make it so," Mayer told the room. And because this is now concrete proof of corruption, Rumble believes that it has what it needs to successfully win an antitrust lawsuit against Google.

 

According to Rumble, Google is guilty of self-preferencing antitrust violations. It even goes so far as to promote certain stock websites over others in the Google Finance module, for example.

 

"We were actually ordering the links based on various published metrics like Comscore and media metrics," Mayer explained about how stock sites were displayed prior to the existence of Google Finance.

 

Instead of showing the top five finance sites based on their popularity, which is part of what a search engine is supposed to do, Google Finance always puts "the Google link first."

 

According to Mayer, it is perfectly "fair" for stock and finance websites to be prioritized by Google rather than the public, though she did not specify how or why this is fair.

 

"It will be very interesting to see how the U.S. courts view this practice," writes Didi Rankovic for Reclaim the Net. "Not least because in the same video, Mayer is heard confirming that it didn't stop with Google Finance."

 

Where else did it go, you are probably now asking? According to Mayer, Google Maps is also the first thing that shows up in Google Search when searching for "maps" or other directions-related contents.

 

"So when we rolled out Google Finance, we did put the Google link first," Mayer explained. "But for Google Maps, again, it's the first link, and so on and so forth. And after that, it's ranked usually by popularity."

 

The way that Mayer so casually and playfully revealed all of this to her audience, laughing all the while at what Rankovic describes as Google displaying "the unbearable lightness of breaking antitrust law," is something that Rumble hopes to capitalize on in court.

 

"Rumble is suing Google as an unfair competitor, a giant dominating the market and from that position, preferencing its own products, against antitrust rules," Rankovic explains.

As of October 2019, the federal government had granted DACA to nearly 68,000 illegal aliens with prior arrest records, while fewer than 30,000 illegal aliens with prior arrests were denied DACA or had their DACA status terminated as a result.

 

More than 25,000 illegal aliens were granted DACA despite having been arrested for drunk driving, along with roughly 3,300 previously arrested for assault, nearly 1,500 previously arrested for burglary, almost 600 previously arrested for hit-and-run, 259 previously arrested for sex abuse or child rape, more than 170 previously arrested for kidnapping, 62 previously arrested for rape, more than 30 previously arrested for animal cruelty, 15 previously arrested for murder, five previously arrested for manslaughter, and two previously arrested for having child pornography.

 

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last month, Center for Immigration Studies Director of Policy Jessica Vaughan warned lawmakers against passing amnesty for the roughly 800,000 illegal aliens enrolled in DACA today.

 

“There are legitimate concerns about the lack of rigor in the vetting process for DACA,” Vaughan said:

 

The lenient eligibility criteria and ‘lite and lean’ background checks that were directed under then-USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas meant that many individuals with criminal histories were able to obtain DACA. According to a USCIS report, about 12 percent of DACA applicants had arrest records, includ[ing] assault, battery, rape, murder and driving under the influence, and 85 percent of those applicants were approved.

In one case, DACA illegal alien Luis Perez of Mexico was sentenced in 2023 to five consecutive life sentences for murdering 38-year-old Steven Marler, 23-year-old Josh Hampton, and a woman accused of being an accomplice to Marler and Hampton’s murders.

 

In 2018, DACA illegal alien Francisco Javier Rios-Covarrubias of Mexico was sentenced to 35 years for brutally terrorizing and sexually abusing a three-year-old girl in Arizona in a case that shocked investigators.

 

To celebrate DACA’s 12th anniversary, Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas called on Congress to pass an amnesty that would reward such illegal aliens with green cards and, eventually, naturalized American citizenship.

 

“On day one of my administration, I sent a comprehensive immigration reform plan to Congress to protect DREAMers and their families,” Biden said. “While Vice President Harris and I will continue fighting for our DREAMers, only Congress can provide permanent and lasting stability for them and their families. Congress must still act.”

 

The term “DREAMers” refers to those illegal aliens who are eligible and enrolled in the DACA program who would receive amnesty from the DREAM Act.

 

Mayorkas, who oversaw the program during his time in the Obama administration, said “Congress needs to act” to pass a DACA amnesty.

 

“Until they do, we will continue to advocate for, defend, and work with DREAMers to ensure they have the support and security they need to thrive,” Mayorkas said. “We will continue the work we started 12 years ago today.”

The irregularities in the certification tests by Toyota Motor came to light on June 3, and the carmaker has suspended production of three models produced by its group companies.

 

TOYOTA, AICHI – Toyota Motor Corp. President Koji Sato apologized to shareholders for fraudulent certification tests for vehicles at the annual shareholders meeting held at the company’s headquarters in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, on Tuesday.

 

“We sincerely apologize for the great inconvenience caused to our customers and shareholders,” Sato, who chaired the meeting, said at the beginning of the meeting.

 

The irregularities in the certification tests by Toyota Motor came to light on June 3, and the carmaker has suspended production of three models produced by its group companies.

 

Before the revelations, irregularities in certification testing were found at Daihatsu Motor Co. and Toyota Industries Corp, both of which are members of the Toyota Group.

 

“We sold [the models] without following the correct procedures to obtain certification,” Sato said. “Chairman Akio Sato is working on making improvements at the workplaces. I’ll work with him to prevent recurrence.”

 

Proposals to appoint 10 members to the board of directors, including Toyoda and Sato, were approved at the shareholders’ meeting.

 

Institutional Shareholder Services Inc., a U.S. voting advisory firm, recommended against the proposal to appoint Toyoda as a director, saying that he is the one ultimately responsible for the certification irregularities.

 

Some institutional investors, including the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), the largest public pension fund in the United States, have stated that it voted against the proposal.

US billionaire eyes TikTok takeover to save internet from Big Tech

 

Frank McCourt, a US real estate billionaire, aims to buy TikTok to rescue the internet from the clutches of major platforms that he firmly believes are destroying society and endangering children.

 

In the United States, McCourt is best known as the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team, while in Europe he is the current proprietor of storied football club Olympique de Marseille that counts French President Emmanuel Macron among its fans.

 

For years, McCourt has railed against the power of the big tech platforms, accusing them of harming children and helping send the world off the rails.

 

"We are being manipulated by these big platforms. And that's why we see in free societies everywhere, there's sort of the world on fire, right?" McCourt told AFP at the Collision tech conference in Toronto.

 

He cited political upheaval in France, where the far-right could secure a decisive victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections, as the latest example.

 

"There's a lot of agitation, a lot of chaos, a lot of polarization. Well, you know what, the algorithms are working well. They're keeping us in that constant state. It's time for change."

 

McCourt said he was initially motivated to act by the threat posed by social media to his own seven children.

 

"This internet is predatory. It's doing a lot of damage to kids. We see the anxiety, the depression, and an epidemic now of children taking their lives," he said.

 

To address the problem, McCourt is campaigning for a "new internet" which, he claims, would wrest control of the web away from major platforms like Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, or X.

 

"These platforms have hundreds of thousands of individual attributes about each of us. And it's not just where we shop or what we like to eat or where we physically are present. It's about how we think, how we emote, how we react, how we behave," he said.

 

McCourt envisions a new internet that he describes as an open-source, decentralized protocol where users control their own data, regardless of the social media app they use.

 

Acquiring TikTok would give his project known as Project Liberty a whole new scale, bringing in its legions of users, mostly younger people, he said.

 

Project Liberty counts internet pioneer Tim Berners-Lee as a supporter, along with Jonathan Haidt, an NYU professor whose latest book, "The Anxious Generation," argues that the effects of social media on young people have been devastating.

McCourt is not alone in eyeing the Chinese-owned platform, with Trump's former secretary of the treasury, Steve Mnuchin, also advancing a bid.

 

These plans, which some say are far-fetched, follow a bill signed by US President Joe Biden in April that gives TikTok 270 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the country.

 

However, it is hardly a sure thing that TikTok will end up being for sale.

 

The company is fighting the law in US courts, and the Chinese government has said it would not accept the divestment of one of the country's most successful tech brands.

 

"The US government's concern is that the data of 170 million Americans is being scraped and sent to China," which "of course" poses a national security threat, McCourt said.

 

However, he added, "I hope that this TikTok issue will make that light bulb go off for people, and they'll realize (that even on other platforms) their data is being scraped and shipped somewhere."

 

"Maybe it's not going to China, but it's going somewhere controlled by someone who has everything about you, and that's not correct. That's undemocratic," he said.

Switzerland could distribute cocaine to addicts

The proposed measure is aimed at alleviating the country’s growing crack epidemic

 

Switzerland is considering introducing an experimental program to distribute prescription cocaine among drug users, which might help them beat their crack addiction.

 

While the measure has been advocated by humanitarians and experts for some time, now Switzerland’s Federal Commission for Addiction and Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (EKSN) is considering it as well.

 

“People who consume crack several times a day get caught in a vicious circle of procurement and consumption,” EKSN Vice President Christian Schneider told the public broadcaster SRF on Tuesday.

 

“We are at least suggesting how cocaine could be given to severely addicted crack users so that they can break the vicious circle and recover.”

 

The commission is now considering setting up special teams to visit crack addicts and provide them with medical and psychotherapeutic aid. The controlled distribution of cocaine is also an option, the official suggested, citing the state’s efforts to beat a past heroin epidemic which involved dispensing the drug, or its substitute methadone, to addicts. However, there are no plans to begin “simply handing out cocaine in large quantities,” Schneider warns.

 

Some medical experts, however, are highly critical of the idea, arguing that no solid scientific research exists which would justify such a program. Moreover, it is unclear whether the authorities would be able to determine the demand for crack among addicts, addiction specialist Marc Vogel from University Psychiatric Clinics in Basel told the broadcaster.

 

“The main question is whether we can achieve saturation so that people are satisfied. Whether this will work with cocaine distribution is at least very questionable,” he said.

 

Switzerland began experiencing troubles with growing crack cocaine abuse in around 2020, with reportedly high-quality and arguably cheap merchandise flooding the streets. Geneva was hit by the crack wave first, with the problem subsequently spreading to several other major cities, including Basel, Zurich and Lausanne.

 

Small-time street dealers of African origin arriving in the country from France in numbers have reportedly greatly contributed to the ongoing crack epidemic. The booming drug market has also attracted addicts from other countries as well, with only a third of crack users in Geneva believed to be locals.

 

“One third are from Geneva, one third are from France and one third are migrants,” Camille Robert, co-director of a Geneva-based addiction study group, said in March.
