US prosecutors reached a deal with 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the Pentagon said Wednesday, reportedly involving a guilty plea in exchange for avoiding a death penalty trial

 

The agreements with Mohammed and two other accomplices moves the long-running cases — which have been bogged down in pre-trial maneuverings for years while the defendants remained held at the Guantanamo military base in Cuba — toward resolution.

 

“The specific terms and conditions of the pretrial agreements are not available to the public at this time,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

 

The New York Times reported that Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi had agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence instead of the death penalty.

 

Such a proposal was detailed by prosecutors in a letter last year but divided the families of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks, with some still wanting the defendants to face the ultimate penalty.

The man accused of plotting the attacks of Sept. 11 and two of his accomplices have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges in exchange for a life sentence rather than a death-penalty trial at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, prosecutors said Wednesday.

 

A senior Pentagon official approved the deal for Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Walid bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, according to Defense Department officials with knowledge of the agreement. The men have been in U.S. custody since 2003. But the case had become mired in more than a decade of pretrial proceedings that focused on the question of whether their torture in secret C.I.A. prisons had contaminated the evidence against them.

 

Word of the deal emerged in a letter from war court prosecutors to family members of victims of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The House filed a brief Monday in the appeal of Trump ally Steve Bannon that seeks toresurrect legal arguments that the House select panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol could not issue subpoenas because it was illegitimate.

 

The chamber’s filing at the full U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit takes the position of House Republican leaders toargue the panel broke the chamber’s rules when it was set up.

 

Bannon is currently serving a four-month sentence as he appeals his convictions on two counts of contempt of Congress, filed after he ignored a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee seeking documents and his testimony about events leading up to the attack.

 

Although the brief said the House did not take a position on Bannon’s other arguments, it sought to revive legal arguments about the panel’s legitimacy that multiple courts have rejected.

 

Monday’s brief made two arguments: that the committee should have had 13 members, including five from the Republican minority; and that it should have had a ranking minority member, rather than a vice chair.

 

To issue lawful subpoenas— a requirement to find Bannon in contempt of Congress — the committee had to be set up with those features, the House argued. “In this House’s view, none of these things happened,” the brief said.

Last month, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer said they had voted together to weigh in on Bannon’s behalf over the objection of Democratic leaders.

 

District Judge Carl Nichols of the District of Columbia rejected similar arguments from Bannonas part of the pretrial process. Numerous courts have upheld the committee’s composition, including the D.C. Circuit itself, following a suit by former President Donald Trump seeking to keep the House from gaining access to his presidential records.

 

Now-Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson joined a unanimous three-judge panel that found the committee was properly constitutedand that Trump had no legal ability to keep the Biden administration from handing over records. (They can’t decide what the rules our in the House for the Committee, it’s the House’s rules.)

 

Bannon was convicted on two counts of contempt of Congress in 2022 and has fought the conviction since, arguing that he relied on his attorney’s advice that executive privilege prevented him from cooperating with the subpoena.

 

In May, a three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit found that there was no executive privilege involved in the subpoena and that Bannon had a duty to at least respond rather than ignoring it. Bannon has since appealed that ruling to the full D.C. Circuit, leading to the House weighing in on Monday.

 

The only other witness prosecuted for contempt of Congress in the Jan. 6 select panel’s investigation, former trade advisor Peter Navarro, recently finished his four-month sentence. Navarro also has a pending appeal of his conviction, on different legal arguments.

 

House Republicans have for years criticized the panel, including a resolution last month from Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., that would purport to rescind the subpoenas issued by the panel to Bannon and other recalcitrant witnesses who refused to cooperate.

Members Call for Immediate Investigation into Destructive Riots on NPS Property

 

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 29, 2024

Today, House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) led a letter to U.S. Department of the Interior Deb Haaland and National Park Service (NPS) Director Chuck Sams requesting they launch an immediate investigation into the destructive and violent protests on July 24 on the National Mall, Columbus Circle and other NPS property in the D.C. area. In part, the members wrote:

 

“The ANSWER Coalition and its event leaders were required to manage their demonstrators and ensure compliance. At its core, the Permit required that ‘[t]he area should be left in substantially the same condition as it was prior to the activities authorized herein.’ The ANSWER Coalition violated—and encouraged violation by others of—nearly every Permit provision. Unsurprisingly, demonstrators continued to violate the Permit’s provisions even after the Permit was revoked. In fact, ANSWER Coalition’s violations, including assault on federal officers, destruction of federal property, resisting arrest, and more were so extreme that the United States Park Police (USPP) contacted the Committee to alert them to the ongoing situation. USPP, Capitol Police (USCP), and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) became overwhelmed due to DOI’s inaction and had no choice but to use force in self-defense and to regain control of the demonstrators.

 

“Although all Americans have the right to engage in peaceful protests, violent demonstrations such as the one that took place on July 24, 2024, have no place in our Nation and must be condemned not only by words, but by action. The Permittee, its named event organizers, and the criminal demonstrators must be held liable to the full extent of the law.

 

“Accordingly, the Committee hereby requests that DOI and NPS immediately launch a full investigation of crimes that took place during the July 24 protests and refer charges to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for civil and criminal prosecution, as provided by federal law.”

I donated a substantial amount in 2020, but have held off on donations this time because the signals I'm getting from here and from other sites is that there isn't going to be an election, just Trump publicly taking his place as President after SCOTUS or the military announce that the 2020 election was indeed stolen. I get that we are watching a movie and that there are going to be unexpected plot twists, but after the past two weeks my head is spinning. So much of what is happening now doesn't make sense anymore.

 

I'm about ready to just check out and let whatever is supposed to happen, happen. It's not like I can influence the outcome anyway, which makes me sad, because when I first found this board in October of 2017 I was excited about the opportunity to play a part in The Great Awakening.
