Secret Service Whistleblowers Describe Butler Trump Rally as a ‘Free-for-All’ Security Nightmare

 

Nobody was fired. The lead site agent responsible for the Trump security disaster continues to oversee security for political events.

 

Whistleblowers tell Sen. Josh Hawley that she, the lead site agent, was not enforcing normal security protocols and describe her as “inexperienced and incompetent.”

 

There was a failure to check IDs at the event, allowing unchecked access to secure areas.

 

Additionally, Homeland Security agents, many of whom had never worked a rally before, were primarily responsible for security instead of experienced Secret Service agents.

 

The Secret Service snipers communicated via text message without Wi-Fi, and the Secret Service itself was in a separate command center, far from the action.

Sir Keir Starmer should recall Parliament, Nigel Farage has demanded as he accused him of a “faltering approach” towards the riots currently sweeping Britain.

The Reform UK leader said the return of MPs to the House of Commons would provide the opportunity for a “more honest debate” about mass migration and its impact on communities.

In a sixth day of violence on Sunday following the Southport killings, a hotel used to house asylum seekers was set ablaze while far-Right rioters clashed with Muslim protesters.

A mob in Middlesbrough shouted “smash the p—s” while targeting migrants’ homes, while social media footage appeared to show groups of Asian men attacking white men.

Parliament was recalled by Lord Cameron, who was prime minister during the 2011 summer riots that followed the death of Mark Duggan in Tottenham, six days after unrest started.

In a statement on X, Mr Farage said he had been “totally appalled” by the levels of violence seen in the past week.

“The levels of intimidation and threat to life have no place in a functioning democracy,” he wrote.

“That so many police officers have been injured trying to keep the peace is shocking, and we should not discount the use of the Army if the situation were to deteriorate further. In the short term, we will quell the riots, but deeper long-term problems remain.

“Ever since the soft policing of the Black Lives Matter protests, the impression of two-tier policing has become widespread. The Prime Minister’s faltering attempts to address the current crisis have only added to that sense of injustice.”

I could not find an independent confirmation of this, but it would fit the pattern and the City does have some responsibilities for London ports, so this is plausible. If true, it would be stunning because that would mean that the City could bring in products of any kind including currency, precious metals, cocaine, and also people, without the permission or even knowledge of UK customs and immigration or the UK government…

Religious people all say they want unity and peaces and love, but that only extends as far as their own subjective beliefs allow. Just look at the division witch Christians themselves. All religions have sects but I will use this because I am the most familiar. Why do some churches say it is right to worship on saturday but others sunday to the point its a doctrinal position in that grouping. This creates a automatic separation because of dogmatic principles. So even in the in group preference there is still division if you are not 100 equal in thought. Either they will say you are not devout enough or some other such nonsense. This also helps showcase how the entire structure is built upon a rocky foundation. If you start to question how the house was built you are then removing yourself further from the group. Same thing with people waking up from anything. In therapy they often say that the more you heal the people who have put you down will lash out. So unity is only as good as the group think you are part of. Does that answer it.

More than $1 million worth of cocaine washed up on a beach in the Florida Keys after Hurricane Debby battered the Gulf Coast’s Big Bend Monday morning, officials said.

 

Debby, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early in the morning, carried more than two dozen 70-pound packages of cocaine ashore as winds topped 80 miles per hour, US Border Patrol said.

 

“Hurricane Debby blew 25 packages of cocaine (70 lbs.) onto a beach in the Florida Keys,” US Border Patrol acting chief patrol Agent Samuel Briggs II said in a social media post.

Briggs shared photos of the taped-up bricks of cocaine which featured a glowing red triangular symbol on them.

He said the drugs have a street value that surpasses $1 million.

A beachgoer discovered the drugs — wrapped inside a trash bag — among seaweed, leaves and other debris that washed up on the beach, according to photos posted in reply to Briggs’ post.

The man contacted authorities about the washed-up stash and US Border Patrol seized the pricey packages.

 

Bricks of cocaine and other drugs frequently wash up on southern Florida beaches and surrounding waters as smugglers traffic the illegal substances from South America to the US.

 

In June, a beachgoer scouring a north Florida beach for sea turtle nests instead stumbled upon $4 million worth of cocaine bricks.

 

The discovery stunned law enforcement who said it’s rare for the drugs to make it to Nassau County, which is much farther north than where they usually wash up.

Meanwhile, Debby — which has since been downgraded to a tropical storm — is expected to bring punishing rain and flooding as it makes its way north from Florida to Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

This week in future tech, Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed the company is close to developing a fully autonomous car, years ahead of competitors.

 

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made the surprising claim that the company is “very close” to having the “ basic functionality” for Level 5 autonomy by the end of this year.

 

As reported by Bloomberg, Musk was speaking at the World AI Conference in a pre-recorded video and added that there were “no fundamental challenges remaining” to deploying this level of vehicle autonomy.

 

“There are many small problems, and then there’s the challenge of solving all those small problems and then putting the whole system together, and just keep addressing the long tail of problems,” he said.

 

In 2016, Musk claimed that all of Tesla’s cars will be capable of driving themselves, pending a future update. So far however, all Tesla owners wanting to use its Autopilot feature must hold at least one hand on the steering wheel at all times.

 

Musk’s claim is surprising considering Tesla’s competitors, such as GM, say that their own autonomous vehicles are many years away from being able to drive independently on public roads.

 

Cupra reveals sports EV with 500km range

Cupra, the sports car spin-off of Spanish automaker SEAT, has unveiled its first all-electric vehicle (EV).

 

The Cupra El-Born was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show last year and now it’s confirmed it will launch in 2021.

 

Its designers claim it will have a range of up to 500km using its 77kWh battery and can go from 0kph to 50kph in 2.9 seconds – an unusual metric given that most car brands advertise the time it takes to reach from 0kph to 100kph.

 

As a member of the larger Volkswagen group, Cupra said that the El-Born, named after the historic region in Barcelona, will be manufactured in Zwickau, Germany.

 

“Cupra El-Born displays all the genes of the Cupra brand and we have taken the original concept to the next level creating a new sporty and dynamic design and re-engineering the technological content,” said Cupra CEO Wayne Griffiths.

 

“Cupra El-Born is the living proof that performance and electrification are a great match.”

 

Loon deploys first 4G balloons over Kenya

Loon, a telecommunications offshoot of Google, has deployed its first 4G-transmitting balloons over Kenya. The project’s goal is to release a series of balloons that could bring 4G internet coverage to regions where access to these speeds is extremely limited.

 

While work on the project in Kenya began two years ago, the BBC reported that it was recently fast-tracked by the Kenyan government to improve communications during the coronavirus pandemic.

 

Testing has been underway since April with 35,000 customers gaining access to the Telkom Kenya network. Download speeds of just under 19Mbps and upload speeds of 4.7Mbps have been recorded.

 

The eventual aim is to have 35 solar-powered balloons constantly moving in the stratosphere above east Africa to maintain the network.

 

Chief executive of Telkom Kenya Mugo Kibati said this was “an exciting milestone for internet service provision in Africa”.

 

“The internet-enabled balloons will be able to offer connectivity to the many Kenyans who live in remote regions that are underserved or totally unserved, and as such remain disadvantaged,” he said.

For more than a year, Virgin Hyperloop has been in discussions with the Non-Traditional and Emerging Transportation Technology Council to flesh out how regulation of a hyperloop transport system may look like. Virgin Group founder Richard Branson also welcomed the news saying it will “support America’s transportation sector in the 21st century and beyond”.

A network of giant balloons will soon bring internet access to remote regions of rural Kenya.

Google's sister-company Loon has announced its first commercial deal: partnering with Telkom Kenya to deliver connectivity to the region.

The firm's antennae-dangling fleet will ride the wind high above parts of the African country.

But experts have warned that the partnership could lead to a communications monopoly.

Originally known as Project Loon, the technology behind the internet balloons was developed under parent company Alphabet's experimental division, X.

Earlier this month, the business "graduated, external" to become a fully fledged subsidiary in its own right: Loon. As part of its first commercial agreement, Loon has pledged to bring internet access to some of Kenya's most inaccessible regions.

The specific terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

"We will work very hard with Loon, to deliver the first commercial mobile service, as quickly as possible, using Loon's balloon-powered Internet in Africa," said Aldo Mareuse, chief executive of Telkom.

Loon's balloons float high in the stratosphere, around 20km (12.4 miles) above sea level; a height the company says is out of range of air traffic, storms and wildlife.

The tennis-court-sized balloon is made from polyethylene, filled with helium and powered by a solar panel. The balloons are designed to stay aloft for months at a time, and move by surfing wind channels, predicting speeds and directions so that they can navigate in the direction they need to travel.

Each balloon carries an antenna, which relays internet signals transmitted from the ground, extending coverage over an area of 5,000sq km.

In the case of this new partnership, Telkom Kenya will be providing the internet signals, and Loon will spread it over remote areas of Kenya.

At the mercy of Alphabet

"Connectivity in these rural locations is a big problem," said Ken Banks, an expert in African connectivity, and head of social impact at Yoti.

He explained that attempts to install a physical infrastructure in the region have been plagued with problems. The vast distances of the region mean that laying fibre cables or building an array of mobile masts is impractical.

"That only leaves the kinds of technology that Loon and other fully wireless solutions provide."

Much of Kenya's population of around 49 million people is catered for by mobile coverage, but enormous sections of the country are disconnected from internet providers.

Mr Banks said Loon could be transformational for these areas, but he also warned that many people were concerned about building a reliance on commercial, foreign technology for something as critical as connectivity.

"Once these networks are in place, and dependency has reached a critical level, users are at the mercy of changes in business strategy, pricing, terms and conditions and so on.

"This would perhaps be less of a problem if there's more than one provider - you can simply switch network - but if Loon and Telkom have monopolies in these areas, that could be a ticking time bomb."

Kaluka Wanjala, a Nairobi-based technology blogger, said that delivering connectivity to rural areas "will bring opportunities that we have seen the internet bring to other regions of Kenya".

Nanjira Sambuli, advocacy manager for the World Wide Web Foundation, noted that the UN Broadband Commission's target for internet affordabilit, externaly says 1GB of mobile data should cost no more than 2% of gross national income per capita. In Africa, 1GB of data currently costs an average of 18% of monthly income, external.

"So, the partnership is a good step towards advancing connectivity," she said. "However, it is imperative that this partnership not only achieves quality connectivity (4G) but also that it is affordable and meaningful.

"Hopefully the infrastructure will also incentivise private sector and the government alike to consider facilitating public access solutions."

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

 

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

 

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

1797–1867

The United States maintained consular relations with the Papal States from 1797 under President George Washington and Pope Pius VI to 1867 and President Andrew Johnson and Pope Pius IX. Diplomatic relations existed with the Pope, in his capacity as head of state of the Papal States, from 1848 under President James K. Polk to 1867 under President Andrew Johnson, though not at the ambassadorial level. These relations lapsed when on February 28, 1867, Congress passed legislation that prohibited any future funding of United States diplomatic missions to the Holy See.
