Joe Biden might not remember what day it is or what he’s supposed to be doing in the White House, but he knows one thing for sure: he was ousted and forced to abandon his 2024 campaign by his own party. A party to which he dedicated his entire crooked, criminal life, only to be tossed out like yesterday’s garbage. The real kicker is that Biden’s closest ally, Nancy Pelosi, was the mastermind behind the coup to remove him, and it seems he’s well aware of it.

In his first interview since being ousted, Biden admits he was pushed out because Democrats feared his failed “presidency” would ruin their campaigns. He also shrewdly places the blame for his departure squarely at Pelosi’s hooved feet.

“A number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was going to hurt them in the races. And I was concerned if I stayed in the race, that would be the topic — you’d be interviewing me about why did Nancy Pelosi say [something] … and I thought it’d be a real distraction,” Biden said.

In addition, Pelosi appeared on The New Yorker Radio, where she admitted her influence on ending Joe’s political career, and also told the world that she was never a fan of Biden’s “political operation.” Could Pelosi be talking about Jill? After all, the good “doctor” was the real power behind her hopelessly confused husband.

Of course, Nancy is trying to cover her tracks by claiming she had nothing to do with the coup and didn’t even make a single phone call about it. Good grief, no one on earth is buying that nonsense.

Modernity:

It was widely reported that Pelosi told Biden that he could either step down “the easy way” or be removed “the hard way.” Biden is apparently furious with her, as mentioned by interviewer Lesley Stahl in this clip.

But there’s definitely trouble in paradise, and the once-beloved “friendship” between Biden and Pelosi seems to be on the rocks.

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said sustaining President Biden’s legacy is at the top of her to-do list when asked if there’s a “way back” to their friendship after the pair stopped speaking when he dropped out of the 2024 race to retain the Oval Office.

“Is there a way back for your friendship?” former Biden administration White House press secretary Jen Psaki asked Pelosi, D-Calif., during a segment of her MSNBC show “Inside with Jen Psaki” that aired Sunday.

Pelosi focused her attention on the generational love her family has for Biden and on sustaining the 46th president’s legacy when answering the question.

“In our family, we have three generations of love for Joe Biden. My husband and I, of course, we’ve known him for a very long time – respect him, love him and Jill. He and Jill are so remarkable, and their family. Our kids have always loved them. I had pictures with him from our children growing up and now our grandchildren growing up,” she said.

Clearly, Joe Biden knows exactly who took him down.

The American people literally watched the so-called champions of “precious democracy” remove a candidate whom they had voted for and replace him with someone who received no votes at all. One has to wonder how that’s even legal.

The US Department of Justice is considering breaking up Google, according to reports from Bloomberg, the New York Times and others.

 

Last week, a federal court in the US ruled the tech giant had broken antitrust law by spending billions on creating an illegal monopoly and becoming the world's default search engine.

The ruling is seen as the first big win for authorities taking on the dominance of Big Tech.

 

The Department of Justice's other options include forcing Alphabet's Google to share data with competitors and instating measures to prevent it from gaining an unfair advantage in AI products, the reports said, citing people familiar with the matter.

 

Breaking off the Android operating system, AdWords, Google's search ad program, or the Chrome web browser are all options being discussed, according to the reports.

 

Meta, Amazon and Apple have all had legal action brought against them by antitrust regulators in the past four years for their domination of their markets.

 

Microsoft had settled with the Department of Justice in 2004 on claims it forced its Internet Explorer Web browser on Windows users.

 

Google and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Over 1,000 Anti-Mass Migration Protestors and Social Media Posters Arrested.

 

Over 1,000 people have been arrested in connection with the disorder in Britain following the deadly mass stabbing of multiple young girls by a migration-background teenager in Southport, England. The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) boasts 1,024 people have been arrested and 575 people have been charged so far.

 

“We told you justice would be swift and we wouldn’t tolerate this type of criminality,” the council declared on Tuesday, adopting a bullying tone.

 

The youngest person currently known to have been arrested is an 11-year-old, detained in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Much older protestors have also been targeted, including David Spring, a 61-year-old imprisoned for 18 months for chanting, “Who the f**k is Allah?” and making “hostile gestures” towards riot police in London.

 

Police, prosecutors, and judges have warned they will go after people even if they have not directly participated in any violence.

 

“Anybody involving themselves in this type of behavior, this type of disorder, as an active participant or a curious observer can expect to be, save for the most exceptional circumstances, remanded into custody,” said a Northern Irish judge last week, jailing an 18-year-old with no criminal record who was merely on the “periphery” of a riotous demonstration.

SCOURING SOCIAL MEDIA.

 

Stephen Parkinson, the Director of Public Prosecutions of England and Wales (DPP) under Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, warns that “dedicated police officers” are “scouring social media” to arrest people alleged to have incited violence or “racial hatred” amid the protests, and that problematic posters overseas may be extradited.

 

One man aged 51 has been imprisoned for sharing “grossly offensive” memes featuring South Asian men. Prosecutors complained one meme included South Asian men holding knives near a crying white child outside the Palace of Westminster, where Parliament is based, with the caption ‘Coming to a town near you.’

 

At least one woman, aged 55, has been arrested merely for sharing “inaccurate information” about the Southport suspect.

Wes Allen is sending the registrations to the state’s attorney general for ‘further investigation and possible criminal prosecution.’

 

Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen has discovered more than 3,000 potential noncitizens registered to vote in the state. His office is now taking steps to remove noncitizens from the rolls.

 

“I will not tolerate the participation of noncitizens in our elections,” Allen said in an Aug. 13 press release. “We have examined the current voter file in an attempt to identify anyone who appears on that list that has been issued a noncitizen identification number.”

 

Allen’s office found 3,251 registered voters with noncitizen ID numbers issued by the Department of Homeland Security, according to the release. His office is telling local administrators to “inactivate and initiate steps necessary to remove all individuals who are not United States citizens” from the voter file.

 

Allen worked with “other state agencies that collect noncitizen identification numbers” and checked them against voter registrations, Laney Rawls, Allen’s director of communications, told The Federalist. She said Allen has made this a “priority” since taking office in January 2023.

 

Some of these potential noncitizen voters may have become citizens after initially getting noncitizen ID numbers, according to the release.

 

Allen’s office will inactivate these registrations and allow those who have since become citizens to update their registration with an Alabama driver’s license number, non-driver ID, or the last four digits of their Social Security number, according to Rawls.

 

Allen’s office is still working to determine when the noncitizen ID numbers were issued, Rawls said.

 

The federal government has denied “repeated requests” to help with the investigation, according to the release. Allen began contacting the DHS’s Citizenship and Immigration Services division in November 2023, requesting a list of noncitizens living in Alabama to cross-reference with the state voter file, according to Rawls.

 

“The Office also contacted the White House administration for assistance in getting this data and our requests have been denied,” Rawls said. The “lack of cooperation” prompted Allen to try and solve the issue on his own.

 

“I am hopeful that in the near future the federal government will change course and be helpful to states as we work to protect our elections,” Allen said in the release. Allen’s office is sending the registrations at issue to Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall for “further investigation and possible criminal prosecution.”

 

“This is not a one-time review of our voter file,” Allen said. “We will continue to conduct such reviews to do everything possible to make sure that everyone on our file is an eligible voter.”

 

Federal mandates have directed state agencies to expand voter registration, including sending forms to noncitizens, according to Rawls. She also said President Joe Biden’s “Executive Order on Promoting Access to Voting” led the government to register voters in Alabama’s federal prisons, where inmates include noncitizens.

The Federalist’s Shawn Fleetwood reported Biden has used the executive order to push voter registration in Mississippi prisons. According to The Daily Signal, the Federal Bureau of Prisons partners with left-leaning groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Voters, and the Campaign Legal Center.

 

“Unfortunately, the federal government limits the power of states to require proof of citizenship at the time of registration,” Rawls said. Still, Allen has directed local boards of registrars to require an Alabama driver’s license number, non-driver ID, or Social Security number when registering voters.

 

“Allen has also demanded answers from state and federal agencies conducting these expanded voter registration efforts on how they plan to keep noncitizens from registering to vote in Alabama,” Rawls said.

 

Allen previously warned citizens of registering to vote through Vote411, citing concerns over data privacy. The Federalist reported that Vote411, which masquerades as a nonpartisan group, uses voter registration forms to shuttle users to a left-wing data harvesting operation.

 

In Tennessee, Secretary of State Tre Hargett’s election coordinator Mark Goins sent letters to more than 14,000 potential noncitizens in June, telling them to either update their information or request the state remove them from voter rolls.

 

Doug Kufner, communications director for Hargett’s office, told The Federalist at the time that Goins found these registrations after comparing voter registrations to data from the state’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

 

“This data indicates the person may not have been a U.S. citizen at the time of the transaction. The person could have been naturalized since applying for a driver’s license,” Kufner said at the time. “Tennessee law makes it clear that only eligible voters are allowed to participate in Tennessee elections.”

 

The letters instructed new citizens on how to correct their records, but that didn’t stop the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation from threatening to sue, according to The Associated Press. Hargett’s office sent follow-up letters, clarifying it would not remove registered voters who did not respond to the initial mailing.

An imam in the Vancouver area, Adnan Abyat, recently preached a rousing sermon designed to get his congregation all fired up for jihad. As Muslim leaders all over the world speak of Hamas’ conflict with Israel as a jihad, it’s understandable that this kind of sermon would be common in the Islamic world these days. Abyat, like many others, attributed the jihad impulse to Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. Yet there is abundant reason to believe that Muhammad was not exactly what Adnan Abyat and so many others think he was.

 

Abyat declared: “I attest that Muhammad is Allah's servant and His prophet who awakened the desire for Jihad and incited the believers, who made Jihad for the sake of Allah the pinnacle of Islam, and the one who said that Paradise is underneath the shades of the swords.”

 

To be sure, this was a statement of faith, but it was one that was rooted in history. Abyat believes that Muhammad was a real man who walked this earth and made statements that can be known today among his multitudes of followers. As the man whom Allah chose to deliver his eternal message to mankind and whom he designated as the “excellent example” for the believers (Qur’an 33:21), Muhammad’s words carry special weight for Muslims.

 

Indeed, Muhammad’s words are why jihadis take up the sword, as Abyat went on to explain: “His shari'a [law] elevated the status of the mujahideen [warriors of jihad] and he said that Jihad for the sake of Allah raises a man a hundred levels in Paradise and the distance between levels is like the distance between heaven and earth.”

 

Yet what if Muhammad really said none of this? What if the stories Islamic tradition tells us about what he said and did are more myth and legend than sober historical fact? Then Hamas and other jihadis all over the world are killing and dying for a fiction. It would be the cruelest of cruel jokes on the jihadis, but if this idea became widely known in the Islamic world, the result could be transformational.

 

A few years ago, I explored this question in a book titled Did Muhammad Exist? In it, I demonstrated that the earliest available biographical data about Muhammad dates from two centuries after the traditional date of his death. There are a few mentions of “Muhammad” here and there before then, but none of them match what we know, or think we know, about the prophet of Islam.

 

The standard Islamic response to the long gap between Muhammad’s life and the appearance of written records about that life is that this material was preserved as oral tradition in a time when memories were long and writing materials were scarce. That’s superficially plausible, but if the early Muslims were carrying around elaborately detailed accounts of Muhammad’s words and deeds in their minds for two centuries, they were remarkably reticent about doing so. The first six decades of the seventh-century Arab conquest contain no mention anywhere of the existence of the religion of Islam, or of the Qur’an, or of Muhammad as the prophet of Islam. The Arab conquerors had extensive contact with the people they conquered, many of whom wrote about these conquests. Yet Islam, the Qur’an, and Muhammad just don’t seem to come up.

Even more astounding, the Islamic traditions themselves are full of contradictions on even the most basic points. In a new book, Muhammad: A Critical Biography, I examine those stories in detail, and show all the contradictions and inconsistencies within what academics still present as sober, meticulously recorded history. Most Islamic traditions say that Muhammad was always the name of the prophet; others, however, assert that he was originally named Qutham and that his name was changed to Muhammad later. Most Islamic traditions state that the angel Gabriel appeared to Qutham/Muhammad and delivered the Qur’anic revelations to him; some, however, maintain that initially an angel named Saraphel visited the new prophet, and was only later replaced by Gabriel.

 

Defenders of the historical value of the early Islamic material may dismiss these as erroneous traditions and point to the preponderance of support for the mainstream versions, but this doesn’t answer the question of why such traditions began circulating in the first place. If Muhammad had always been known as Muhammad and the angel who appeared to him always as Gabriel, why would anyone make up stories renaming the central characters Qutham and Saraphel?

 

The existence of the variant traditions makes sense, however, if we see that Muhammad is a composite figure whose story is made up of many earlier traditions. It could be that stories of Qutham and Saraphel were incorporated into the Muhammad myth, as were traditions that were originally about others, as the figure of the prophet of Islam was being constructed.

 

There are many, many other strange and anomalous aspects of Islamic tradition regarding Muhammad. The fact that I am bringing them to light in Muhammad: A Critical Biography may be why a Pakistani Muslim leader just offered $10 billion for my head and that of Dutch parliamentarian and freedom fighter Geert Wilders. Whether or not jihadis get my head and strike it rich, however, the problems of this most problematic of prophets will remain. We can all hope, for the sake of the peace of the world, that one day the jihadis will realize that their whole enterprise has been a bizarre waste of time, and seek other pursuits.

Army’s Top Enlisted Leader in Washington, D.C. Fired After Investigation Allegedly “Due to a Loss of Trust and Confidence in Her Leadership”

The Army has fired Command Sgt. Maj. Veronica Knapp, the top enlisted leader responsible for overseeing critical operations across Washington, D.C., from her post.

This dismissal, confirmed last Thursday, is officially attributed to a “loss of trust and confidence in her leadership” following an administrative investigation.

Command Sgt. Maj. Knapp, a 24-year veteran of the Army, had only recently assumed her role in Washington, D.C., in June 2023.

Knapp enlisted in the Army in 2000 and made history as the first woman to serve as the senior enlisted adviser for the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Her career included deployments to critical locations such as Bagram, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Despite her extensive and commendable service record, she was abruptly removed following an administrative investigation. However, the specifics of this investigation have been conspicuously withheld from the public.

 

Knapp was relieved on Aug. 8 as result of the Army 15-6 investigation “due to a loss of trust and confidence in her leadership,” said Bernhard “Lash” Lashleyleidner, a JTF-NCR/USAMDW spokesman. No further information about exactly why Knapp was relieved or what the investigation found was immediately available. All military branches nearly always use the phrase “loss of confidence” when leaders are relieved rather that specify wide range of reasons from personal off-duty conduct mistakes.

The JTF-NCR/USAMDW’ is a sprawling military organization established after the 9/11 attacks as a central hub for defense and day-to-day military operations around Washington D.C. Its leaders — who are traditionally an Army two-star general as the overall commander and Navy admiral as their deputy — oversee military units from every branch, several installations and civilian defense agencies whose duties range from ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetary to responding to emergencies with military police and technical rescue teams to establishing mobile command posts for major D.C. events or emergencies.

Knapp was the senior enlisted advisor on the JTF-NCR/USAMDW command staff. Sergeant Major Eberhard G. Nordman, the JTF-NCR/USAMDW’s provost marshal, has been named as her acting replacement.

 

The firing of Knapp marks the second high-profile dismissal of a command sergeant major within the Army in the span of just one month. On July 16th, Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Carlson of the 173rd Airborne Brigade was similarly removed from his post in Italy, also for the vague reason of “loss of trust and confidence in his leadership,” according to Military.com.

❗️Nord Stream: German prosecutor general obtains first arrest warrant

 

Almost two years after the terrorist attack on the pipeline, Federal Prosecutor General Rommel has secured a first arrest warrant for a Ukrainian national residing in Poland, local media reports.

 

However, the Federal Prosecutor General's Office declined to comment on the specifics of the arrest warrant. Two other individuals are also considered suspects, said to be Ukrainian citizens.

Meteors and Aurora over Germany

 

This was an unusual night. For one thing, the night sky of August 11 and 12, earlier this week, occurred near the peak of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. Therefore, meteors streaked across the dark night as small bits cast off from Comet Swift-Tuttle came crashing into the Earth's atmosphere. Even more unusually, for central Germany at least, the night sky glowed purple. The red-blue hue was due to aurora caused by an explosion of particles from the Sun a few days before. This auroral storm was so intense that it was seen as far south as Texas and Italy, in Earth's northern hemisphere. The featured image composite was built from 7 exposures taken over 26 minutes from Ense, Germany. The Perseids occur predictably every August, but auroras visible this far south are more unusual and less predictable.

Container traffic has been halted at Ningbo following a shipboard explosion involving hazardous materials at one of the world’s busiest intermodal hubs.

 

The explosion aboard the Yang Ming vessel YM Mobility on Friday reportedly involved organic peroxide materials. There were no injuries in the blast, but the terminal has been closed until further notice.

Road to Rome: U.S.-Vatican diplomatic ties still vital after 40 years

The United States established formal diplomatic relations with the Holy See 40 years ago, and the current ambassador in Rome says its mission has been a wonderful success.

"We've tried to hew very closely to the mission that we've been given, and we have a great relationship with the Vatican," said Joe Donnelly, U.S. ambassador to the Holy See.

A former U.S. senator from Indiana and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Donnelly assumed his new and unexpected diplomatic post in Rome in April 2022, presenting his letters of credential to Pope Francis.

German arrest warrant over Nord Stream blast mystery

 

German state prosecutors trying to solve the mystery of who blew up the Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea in 2022 have issued an arrest warrant for a Ukrainian diving instructor.

 

The suspect has been named as Volodymyr Z by German media, who have treated the sabotage like a sensational true crime drama.

 

Ines Peterson, a spokeswoman for Germany’s prosecutor general, declined to confirm the arrest warrant, telling the BBC that her office never commented so as not to jeopardise the investigation by giving the suspect a chance to escape.

 

But the Polish prosecutor general's spokeswoman, Anna Adamiak, in Warsaw told the BBC's Adam Easton that a European Arrest Warrant had indeed been passed to them by German prosecutors.

 

When Polish officers went to Volodymyr Z’s home in early July, he had already left the country for Ukraine, she said.

 

He had until then been living in a quiet residential area of Pruszków, a town near Warsaw, German media say.

New TEMPO Cosmic Data Story Makes Air Quality Data Publicly Available

On May 30th, 2024, NASA and the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian announced the public release of "high-quality, near real-time air quality data" from NASA’s TEMPO (Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution) mission.

The NASA Science Activation program's Cosmic Data Stories team, led by Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, has since released a new "Data Story" – an interactive, digital showcase of new science imagery, including ideas for exploration and scientific highlights shared in a brief video and narrative text – that provides a quick and easy way for the public to visualize this important, large data set from TEMPO.

 

TEMPO allows unprecedented monitoring of air quality down to neighborhood scales, with its hourly daytime scans over North America. Air pollutants like NO2, produced, for example, by the burning of fossil fuels, can trigger significant health issues, especially among people with pre-existing illnesses such as asthma.

The interactive views in the TEMPO Data Story provide public access to the same authentic data that scientists use and invite the public to explore patterns in their local air quality.

For example, how do NO2 emissions vary in our area throughout the day and week? What are possible sources of NO2 in our community? How does our air quality compare with that of other communities with similar population densities, or with nearby urban or rural communities?

TEMPO’s hyper-localized data will allow communities to make informed decisions and take action to improve their air quality.

 

The Cosmic Data Story team is grateful to TEMPO scientists, Xiong Liu and Caroline Nowlan, for providing the team with early access to the data and guidance on NO2 phenomena that learners can explore in the data.

The TEMPO Data Story, featured on TEMPO’s webpage for the public, adds Earth science data to the portfolio of Cosmic Data Stories that is already making astrophysics data accessible to the public.

 

TEMPO Team Atmospheric Physicist from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Caroline Nowlan, had this to say: "TEMPO produces data that are really useful for scientists, but are also important for the general public and policy makers.

The case states that congress intentionally made the wording so vague, so social media with orders from politicians the leftists to order termination of the free speech they disagree with, conservatives, supporters, etc.

NASA Demonstrates ‘Ultra-Cool’ Quantum Sensor for First Time in Space

NASA’s Cold Atom Lab, a first-of-its-kind facility aboard the International Space Station, has taken another step toward revolutionizing how quantum science can be used in space.

Members of the science team measured subtle vibrations of the space station with one of the lab’s onboard tools — the first time ultra-cold atoms have been employed to detect changes in the surrounding environment in space.

 

The study, which appeared in Nature Communications on Aug. 13, also reports the longest demonstration of the wave-like nature of atoms in freefall in space.

The Cold Atom Lab science team made their measurements with a quantum tool called an atom interferometer, which can precisely measure gravity, magnetic fields, and other forces.

Scientists and engineers on Earth use this tool to study the fundamental nature of gravity and advance technologies that aid aircraft and ship navigation.

(Cell phones, transistors, and GPS are just a few other major technologies based on quantum science but do not involve atom interferometry.)

 

Physicists have been eager to apply atom interferometry in space because the microgravity there allows longer measurement times and greater instrument sensitivity, but the exquisitely sensitive equipment has been considered too fragile to function for extended periods without hands-on assistance.

The Cold Atom Lab, which is operated remotely from Earth, has now shown it’s possible.

“Reaching this milestone was incredibly challenging, and our success was not always a given,” said Jason Williams, the Cold Atom Lab project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.

“It took dedication and a sense of adventure by the team to make this happen.”

 

Space-based sensors that can measure gravity with high precision have a wide range of potential applications.

For instance, they could reveal the composition of planets and moons in our solar system, because different materials have different densities that create subtle variations in gravity.

This type of measurement is already being performed by the U.S.-German collaboration GRACE-FO (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-on), which detects slight changes in gravity to track the movement of water and ice on Earth. An atom interferometer could provide additional precision and stability, revealing more detail about surface mass changes.

 

Precise measurements of gravity could also offer insights into the nature of dark matter and dark energy, two major cosmological mysteries. Dark matter is an invisible substance five times more common in the universe than the “regular” matter that composes planets, stars, and everything else we can see.

Dark energy is the name given to the unknown driver of the universe’s accelerating expansion.

 

“Atom interferometry could also be used to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity in new ways,” said University of Virginia professor Cass Sackett, a Cold Atom Lab principal investigator and co-author of the new study.

“This is the basic theory explaining the large-scale structure of our universe, and we know that there are aspects of the theory that we don’t understand correctly.

This technology may help us fill in those gaps and give us a more complete picture of the reality we inhabit.”

 

About the size of a minifridge, the Cold Atom Lab launched to the space station in 2018 with the goal of advancing quantum science by putting a long-term facility in the microgravity environment of low Earth orbit.

The lab cools atoms to almost absolute zero, or minus 459 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 273 degrees Celsius).

At this temperature, some atoms can form a Bose-Einstein condensate, a state of matter in which all atoms essentially share the same quantum identity. As a result, some of the atoms’ typically microscopic quantum properties become macroscopic, making them easier to study.

 

Quantum properties include sometimes acting like solid particles and sometimes like waves.

Scientists don’t know how these building blocks of all matter can transition between such different physical behaviors, but they’re using quantum technology like what’s available on the Cold Atom Lab to seek answers.

In microgravity, Bose-Einstein condensates can reach colder temperatures and exist for longer, giving scientists more opportunities to study them.

The atom interferometer is among several tools in the facility enabling precision measurements by harnessing the quantum nature of atoms.

 

Due to its wave-like behavior, a single atom can simultaneously travel two physically separate paths.

If gravity or other forces are acting on those waves, scientists can measure that influence by observing how the waves recombine and interact.

Colossal X-class solar flare erupts from 'rule-breaking' sunspot and Earth is in the firing line

The active sun is kicking into overdrive.

In the early morning hours today (Aug. 14), the sun unleashed the most powerful class of solar flare, in a potent X-class eruption.

The solar flare peaked at 2:40 a.m. EDT (0640 GMT) and caused shortwave radio blackouts over the sunlit portion of Earth at the time of the eruption, Asia and the Indian Ocean.

 

What makes this X-class solar flare particularly interesting is that it erupted from 'rule-breaking' sunspot AR3784 which had already garnered the attention of solar scientists and aurora chasers due to its strange polarity.

The sunspot's polarity breaks a hundred-year-old rule, Hale's Law, whereby sunspots in the Northern Hemisphere should be polarized -+. Instead, sunspot AR3784 is polarized ±, a whole 90-degree twist, according to Spaceweather.com.

It's not the first sunspot to break the rule, according to spaceweather.com, it happens approximately 3% of the time. However, a majority of "rule-breakers" show a "reversed polarity" of +- instead of -+, but AR3784 lies somewhere between the two.

 

Experts at Spaceweather.com suggested that the "magnetic underpinnings of this sunspot are corkscrewing in an unusual way. If opposite magnetic polarities get twisted together too tightly, there could be an X-class solar flare." Lo and behold the sunspot did just that.

Solar flares are eruptions on the sun's surface that release intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation.

These flares occur when built-up magnetic energy in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released.

They are classified by size into different categories, with X-class flares being the most powerful. M-class flares are 10 times less intense than X-class, followed by C-class flares, which are 10 times weaker than M-class. B-class flares are 10 times weaker than C-class, and A-class flares, which are 10 times weaker than B-class, have no significant effects on Earth.

Within each class, numbers from 1 to 10 (and beyond for X-class) indicate the relative strength of the flare.

 

Powerful solar flares like the one released this morning can often be accompanied by a coronal mass ejection — a large plume of plasma and magnetic field from the sun — it has yet to be confirmed whether a CME joined this eruption.

CMEs carry electrically charged particles known as ions, and when these collide with Earth's magnetosphere, they can trigger geomagnetic storms.

During these storms, the ions interact with gases in Earth's atmosphere, releasing energy in the form of light. This phenomenon is recognized as the northern lights, or aurora borealis, in the Northern Hemisphere, and as the southern lights, or aurora australis, in the Southern Hemisphere.

 

If a CME is confirmed, we could be in for yet more geomagnetic storms and heightened aurora activity, so get those cameras charged just in case. We await further confirmation.

One thing we do know that accompanied the X-flare was a strong radio blackout on Earth.

The shortwave radio blackouts detected over Asia and the Indian Ocean resulted from the intense burst of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation emitted during the X-flare.

Cyanide leaks into canal as major incident is declared over toxic chemical spillage and locals are warned not to eat the fish

A major incident has been declared following a toxic chemical spillage in a canal in the West Midlands.

Walsall Council said the Environment Agency was testing the canal water for sodium cyanide and other chemicals in the affected area.

The council warned that there is a potential serious health risk to anyone who has had direct physical contact with the water in the impacted stretch of the canal.

The UK Health Security Agency describes sodium cyanide as 'white crystal like solids with a faint almond colour' that is used in industry for metal cleaning, plating, extraction and photography.

Exposure to the chemical can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness, confusion, changes in heart rate and loss of consciousness, according to the agency.
