The easiest way to refute Marxist logic.

 

Is to recognize a truth in plain sight that Marx denied due to his reliance on a poorly thought out "labor theory of value" he borrowed from Adam Smith.

 

The truth is this:

 

The world's first income, in money terms, was Profit income, not Wage income

 

This single truth blows up the entire edifice of Marx's "exploitation theory", which is assumed and taken for granted by every academic, intellectual, pundit, propagandist and believer of Marxism.

 

Contrary to profits being a deduction from what would allegedly have been formerly all wages, wages are in fact a deduction from what would have formerly been all profits.

 

Proof: In the "early and rude state of society", if there ever was such a time, economic activity consisted of no capitalist activity, there was no paying of wages or for capital goods, economic activity consisted of individual and family self sufficient producers who consumed a portion of what they produced and sold the rest for money.

 

The question that must be answered is, what is the type of income earned on the sale of GOODS?

 

It's not wage income. When a buyer buys an animal skin from a seller, the buyer is not purchasing that producer's labor, they are purchasing a good and paying a price for an animal skin. The buyer is demanding the good, not the producer's labor.

 

Here, because the seller incurred no costs of good sold nor wage labor costs, the money earned selling the animal skin is product sales revenues in money MINUS any costs of goods sold in money, which atarted as zero. So if the animal skin sold for 10 units of money, then the income earned by the seller is 10 units of money profit, for 10 minus 0 is 10.

 

Then, after real incomes grew to the point where producers could SAVE AND INVEST what they earned, they could hire labor. THAT is when capitaliam arose. THAT is when wage incomes started for the first time.

 

The income that was before 100% profit, now had associated money costs of production. So if the product sales revenues were again 10, and labor costs were 1, then profit went from 100% to 90%, because now the producers incurred money costs of production, in the form of hired labor.

 

Marx falsely reversed this reality of history and made the critical error that buyers of goods were not buying goods, but buying labor. This is how he was able to assert that profits are "deductions" of wages, and therefore assert capitalists are "exploitative" of laborers.

 

It is how Marx's followers to today shout slogans like "capitalism profits off the working class", and all those offshoots that also falsely presume wages precede profits.

New Laser Network Could Make Space-to-Earth Contact 1,000X Faster

A new 'laser-powered' project being launched in the state of Western Australia could revolutionize global communications.

Two optical ground stations in a strategically placed network have successfully received laser signals from a German satellite, researchers say, paving the way to increase the capacity of space-to-Earth communications by a staggering 1,000 times.

The 'TeraNet' initiative is led by astrophotonics scientist Sascha Schediwy from the University of Western Australia (WA) and funded by the Australian Space Agency's Moon to Mars Demonstrator Mission.

 

"The overall aim of the project is to contribute towards Australia's vision for the next generation of space exploration," Schediwy told ScienceAlert.

Since the launch of Spuntik I in 1957, satellites have communicated via radio waves.

Their low-frequency signal limits their capacity to transmit data, and after nearly 70 years of development, radio-wave communications are becoming unable to keep up with the enormous demand for data transfer.

 

"It's been pushed to the absolute extreme, but it's really now reached a bottleneck," said Schediwy.

With thousands of satellites orbiting Earth, there's a huge volume of data being collected that needs to be sent back down. High-frequency laser communications could present a solution.

"By switching to infrared laser beams for communications, we get a factor of 100, or 1,000, times greater bandwidth," said Schediwy.

 

Among its many potential applications, the researchers hope this powerful satellite communications system will help people feel more connected to space exploration than ever before.

"We can have multiple camera angles and 4K video footage of the next people landing on the Moon," Schediwy said.

"That's a really exciting aspect of the technology, I think."

 

Traditional radio communications tend to have a wide broadcast area, which can cause overlap and interference between radio signals. The short-wavelength signals being used by TeraNet will be more focused.

"With optical signals, instead of your beam being maybe 100 kilometers [62 miles] across, it can be 100 meters [328 ft] across. So, you're really targeting an individual user on the ground," said Schediwy.

With such distinct advantages on offer, it could seem surprising that optical communications haven't been more widely adopted. But these laser-powered systems have a drawback.

 

Unlike their radio-wave counterparts, targeted short-wavelength signals are prone to interference. Lasers are easily interrupted by clouds, making them an unreliable option for satellite communications.

The team has a surprisingly simple solution. The system will have ground stations at several locations in WA connected to the same network, so hopefully, at least one station will always have a clear connection with the satellite.

"If it is cloudy in Perth, the satellite can download its data up at Mingenew, 300 kilometers [186 miles] north," said Schediwy.

 

If the Perth and Mingenew stations are both blocked by cloud, the TeraNet program has a final ace up its sleeve: an additional ground station receiver mounted on the back of a Jeep that can be driven out to whatever coordinates are necessary to achieve the best signal.

If this initial three-station network is successful, the team is already looking to collaborate with other organizations on the east coast of Australia and in New Zealand to set up an Australasian optical ground station network, and that's only the beginning.

"WA is geographically ideally located to be part of a global communications infrastructure, with an oversight of a large part of the Indian Ocean and a reach into Southeast Asia and the polar region," Schediwy told ScienceAlert.

 

Once established, a global optical communications network will enable continuous, ultra-fast satellite data downloads. This could transform situations requiring the rapid sharing of large amounts of data, such as disaster response.

It might only be three ground stations right now, but it will potentially herald a new space age of communication.

"This demonstration is the critical first step," says Schediwy.

Jacques, Jack and the Technocrats

 

A full decade before Jacques Ellul wrote his groundbreaking work, The Technological Society, C. S. Lewis completed the third book of his Space Trilogy, That Hideous Strength. Since Lewis was called Jack by his family and friends, it is interesting that he and Ellul shared a first name rooted in the name Jacob. But they also shared a prescient sense of where applied science and technology would lead modern societies if human-based values were no longer at the helm.

 

Whereas the first two novels of Lewis’ trilogy involve the prospect of Mars and Venus being colonized by imperialistic scientists, the final novel takes place on Earth, setting the stage for the beginnings of a dystopian society seeded by a group of British technocrats. Lewis was genuinely concerned that other planets, through technological advancements, would be corrupted by adherents of what Lewis knew as Scientism. Arthur C. Clarke, at the time, took great offense to this scenario of corruption; he engaged Lewis in correspondence from 1943 to 1954 (Miller).

 

One interesting feature in the effort toward totalistic control over society, as developed in That Hideous Strength, is the matter of influencing public opinion through the news media. Mark, the insecure protagonist in the story, finds himself drawn into the “inner ring” of the technocratic project; he eventually discerns his role to write stories that support the agenda of the National Institute of Coordinated Experiments (N.I.C.E.).

Dynamic Tension for Pandemic Times

 

One of the great features of Ellul’s writings is his extraordinary ability to keep focused on what is important. It is important, for example, to take account of how readers are going to interpret your writings. It is important that they become engaged in an issue. Constant qualification can baffle the hearer.

 

Ellul’s political and sociological writings tend to leave us with unsolved problems. In the case of propaganda, for example, he points to a need on the part of a liberal government to engage in propaganda to offset seditious ideas from within the state or propaganda from other states seeking conquest over one’s own state. But he recognizes that once a state begins to engage seriously in propaganda, it erodes its own claim to being liberal. In Propaganda, he leaves his readers with a stark understanding of the dilemma without resolving it.

 

I see a parallel with Albert Camus who dealt with the problem of free will and determinism by ranking different certainties. He was certain that he was free. And he was certain that the world of science presented us with a deterministic universe. What was important, then, was to be faithful to what reason presented him and not to deny one or other of these two certainties. He was not going to deny one of his certainties merely because there was an apparent contradiction.

 

As I understand Ellul, he preferred to hold fast to the clash of ideas, leaving the reader to solve a dilemma, rather than presenting a solution that would save the reader the trouble of thinking on her own. That did not mean he did not have a solution. For example, in conversation he approved of what might have been done (but wasn’t done) to stand up to Hitler in the late 1930s. Left wing publications folded after the victory of Franco in Spain, but keeping them alive through subsidies would likely have fostered more anti-Hitler sentiment.

Extreme misogyny will be treated as terrorism for the first time under Government plans to combat the radicalisation of young men online.

Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, has ordered a review of Britain’s counter-extremism strategy to urgently address gaps in the Government’s stance, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal.

It will look at tackling violence against women and girls in the same way as Islamist and far-Right extremism, amid fears that current Home Office guidance is too narrow.

This could mean teachers will be legally required to refer pupils they suspect of extreme misogyny to Prevent, the Government’s counter-terror programme.

It comes after warnings that misogynistic influencers are radicalising teenage boys online.

Ms Cooper said: “For too long, Governments have failed to address the rise in extremism, both online and on our streets, and we’ve seen the number of young people radicalised online grow. Hateful incitement of all kinds fractures and frays the very fabric of our communities and our democracy.”

There are several extremism categories ranked by the Home Office as an area of “concern”, including Islamist, extreme Right-wing, animal rights, environmental and Northern Ireland related extremism.

There is also a category for “incel” – an abbreviation of the term “involuntary celibate” – which refers to a male subculture that includes violent feelings towards women as a result of feeling rejected. Officials now fear that this category does not capture other forms of extreme misogyny.

Teachers, healthcare professionals and local authority staff are under a legal duty to make a referral to the Prevent scheme if they believe someone is susceptible to becoming radicalised.

Anyone who is referred to Prevent is then assessed by their local authority and the police to see if they need to be deradicalised.

There were 6,817 Prevent referrals in 2022-23, with the highest proportion of referrals were classified under the broad category of “vulnerability present but no ideology of counter-terrorism risk”, at 37 per cent, followed by extreme Right-wing at 19 per cent and Islamist extremism at 11 per cent.

Violence against women is ‘national security threat’

The move comes after Sir Mark Rowley, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said that violence against women and girls should be treated as a national security threat.

Speaking in the wake of a damning report into the murder of Sarah Everard by a serving Scotland Yard officer, he warned that hundreds of thousands of sex abusers and paedophiles were at large and tackling them would require more resources from future governments.

Last month, the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) published a major report into violence against women and girls, calling for an overhaul in the way it is dealt with owing to the “epidemic scale” of offending.

Influencers accused of radicalising boys

Elsewhere, police chiefs have accused online influencers like Andrew Tate of radicalising boys into extreme misogyny in a way that is “quite terrifying”.

Maggie Blyth, the NPCC lead for violence against women and girls, said young men and boys are at risk of being radicalised in the same way that terrorists draw in followers.

Tate is a controversial British-American influencer and self-proclaimed “misogynist” who rose to fame after appearing on Big Brother in 2016.

He is currently awaiting trial in Romania over allegations of rape, human trafficking and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. He denies the charges.

Review will dictate new counter-extremism strategy

Ms Cooper’s rapid review, which will be completed later this Autumn, will form the basis of a new counter-extremism strategy which the Home Office intends to launch early next year.

Officials will examine emerging ideologies which are gaining momentum, and will assess any gaps in the current system which leave the country “exposed” to threats that promote violence or undermine democracy.

They will look at the rise of Islamist and far-Right extremism as well as beliefs which fit into broader categories such as an obsession with violence.

The Home Office has previously been criticised for failing to get a grip on domestic extremism. Earlier this year, the independent reviewer of Prevent warned that Islamist extremism is not being effectively tackled by the Government and it is fuelling a “dangerous” surge in anti-Semitism.

Sir William Shawcross said the Government had failed to fully implement his proposals to overhaul Prevent, its counter terror programme, which meant the public faced an increased threat from extremists and terrorists.

He said the failure to take tougher action stemmed from a continuing bias within Prevent towards tackling the rise in Right-wing terrorism rather than the main threat of Islamist terrorism.

Ms Cooper said: “Action against extremism has been badly hollowed out in recent years, just when it should have been needed most.

“That’s why I have directed the Home Office to conduct a rapid analytical sprint on extremism, to map and monitor extremist trends, to understand the evidence about what works to disrupt and divert people away from extremist views, and to identify any gaps in existing policy which need to be addressed to crack down on those pushing harmful and hateful beliefs and violence.

“That work will underpin a new strategic approach to countering extremism from Government, working closely with communities to build consensus and impetus for our plans.”

An astronaut accidentally dialed 911 from space and Houston had a problem.

When you’re an astronaut living in a zero-gravity environment, doing simple, everyday tasks are much more difficult than they are on Earth.

NASA astronauts even have to go through an entire toilet training before they’re allowed to head out into space.

However, making a phone call is pretty similar to how we do it here on Earth.

 

Recently, Dutch astronaut André Kuipers explained how making a phone call from the International Space Station is such a common occurrence, he’s even dialed a wrong number from 220 miles above the Earth’s surface.

While trying to contact NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, Kuipers accidentally dialed 911 and immediately hung up.

This set off an alert and a security team was dispatched to the Houston center.

 

“I made a mistake, and the next day I received an email message: did you call 911?” he told a Dutch public broadcasting station.

Imagine being the 911 dispatcher and getting a call from space.

“Uhm, sorry guys it’s going to be a little tough to get any police officers out to the International Space Station. Looks like you’re on your own.”

 

Accidentally dialing 911 is a common occurrence for astronauts at the International Space station because — just like a terrestrial office phone — orbiting astronauts have to dial 9 for an outside line, followed by 011 for an international line.

According to astronaut Holly Ridings, the phones astronauts use in space operate like Skype.

“[Astronauts] can call any phone in the world if they have the right satellite coverage,” she told Space Answers.

“That helps them stay in connection with their families and their friends as well as the people they work with.”

If I were up in space, I’d order a pizza. Because, at a lot of places, if they don’t deliver in 30 minutes or less, your order is free.

When you think of Iran and religion, Christianity isn’t what comes to mind.

 

The Middle Eastern nation isn’t just the biggest Shiite Muslim state in the world, it’s also one of the most draconian when it comes to enforcing the tenets of the religion. The country’s morals police is again in the international spotlight after they reportedly shot a woman last month for a violation of the country’s mandatory hijab laws, according to The Associated Press.

 

However, amid the severity of the country’s morality crackdown is a ray of light for Christians: Iran may well be in the midst of what some commentators are calling a “Jesus Revolution.”

 

In a Tuesday article for faith-based outlet CBN News, writer Gary Lane described how an “unprecedented number of Muslims are choosing to follow Christ, especially in Iran as people search for a better life.”

 

“You have a country with one of the highest drug addiction rates in the world. You have a country where corruption runs rampant. You have a country where more than half the people live below the poverty line,” said Todd Nettleton of The Voice of the Martyrs, a non-governmental organization focused around providing support for persecuted Christians.

 

“And the people of Iran are looking at this and they are saying, ‘Wait a minute. If this is what Islam has brought us in the last 45 years, we’re not interested. We want to know what the other options are.'”

 

Nettleton said that over a million Muslims had left the faith for Christianity and two-thirds of the country’s 75,000 mosques had closed — a claim that had been echoed in other outlets like U.S.-based Iran International, but which is difficult to verify given the nature of Iran’s closed society.

 

“This is not something that is making the regime happy. And, really, in many ways, they are seeking to solidify their power and to crush any kind of dissent,” Nettleton said.

 

“We have heard multiple stories this year of Bible study, a home church being raided. Everyone there is photographed; everyone there is questioned. But then the leader of the meeting is held on to. They are arrested. They are detained. They’re put in prison.”

 

However, he said that family and friends are often easier on Christian converts than the government is.

Due to their risky circumstances, recent Christian converts are enthusiastically communicating about their changed lives with friends and loved ones — but quietly and carefully. However, their discreet but persistent witness accounts for the extraordinary number of new Iranian believers, who meet in small house churches,” she wrote.

 

“These house churches are usually comprised of no more than 10 to 15 believers. On a given day, they arrive, one by one, at a small apartment or some other nondescript location. After the last one enters, the door closes and locks, and they all take a deep breath and relax, greeting each other warmly.”

 

And, one church leader quoted by Gilbert noted that this isn’t just in spite of the state, but because of it, as well: “What if I told you the mosques are empty inside Iran? What if I told you no one follows Islam inside of Iran?” he said. “What if I told you the best evangelist for Jesus was the Ayatollah Khomeini [founder of the Islamic Republic]?”

 

Don Shenk, the executive director of The Tide Ministry, said what’s happening in Iran is indicative of a wider trend, as well, according to CBN.

 

“I think what’s happening there is actually representative of what’s happening in the Islamic world,” he said.

 

“We get responses from listeners who say, you know, now I understand that God loves me. I always thought that God wanted to punish me,” Shenk said. “And I think there’s an awakening that is taking place across the Muslim world, not just in Iran.”

Shenk said countries which have seen growth in new converts include Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and war-torn Yemen.

“Not necessarily welcoming with open arms, obviously. But just the understanding that it could happen, that there could be Christians here,” he said.

 

“And maybe that’s not the worst thing in the world. That’s such a change from what we would have seen 10 or 15 or 20 years ago.”

 

Nevertheless, these are still men and women risking their lives to follow Jesus Christ. It’s an amazing “Jesus Revolution” indeed, but it’s also a reminder they need our prayers to grow in faith and to have God’s hand of protection upon them. It’s an amazing story — and one which will doubtlessly have heavenly recompense. We can only hope that the spiritual transformation of these Iranian Christians is mirrored in the earthly state of their country, as well.

In fact, it made me so angry, I decided to do some analysis.

 

Many prices have increased by 50% or more since COVID, so I decided to put on my investment banking hat and spread some financials back to 2018 / 2019.

 

And man, was I ever surprised…

 

I started by looking at Target's annual revenue:

 

2018: $75.4 billion

2019: $78.1 billion

2020: $93.6 billion

2021: $106.0 billion

2022: $109.1 billion

2023: $107.4 billion

Last Twelve Months (LTM): $106.6 billion

 

Couple things I noticed. First, revenue has slipped a bit since 2022 and is continuing to do so in 2024 - not a great sign for the broader economy. Second, there's been big growth since 2018. They must be price gouging!

 

Well, I looked a bit deeper. Let's look at their cost of goods sold over the same period (the price they paid to buy the products they sold you).

 

2018: $53.3 billion (70.7% of sales)

2019: $54.9 billion (70.2%)

2020: $66.2 billion (70.7%)

2021: $75.0 billion (70.7%)

2022: $82.2 billion (75.4%)

2023: $77.7 billion (72.4%)

Last Twelve Months (LTM): $76.8 billion (72%)

 

Wow, so let me get this straight…

 

Target is making less money (28 cents) on every dollar of sales today than they were in 2018 (29.3 cents). Hmmmm. That's weird. Maybe they're not so good at this price gouging thing.

 

So, I decided to dig even deeper. They were prolly being evil and firing all of their employees so they could make up for the money they weren't gouging, right?

 

So, I looked at their operating expenses (the amount they pay to run the stores and the overall business):

 

2018: $15.7 billion (20.9% of sales)

2019: $16.2 billion (20.8%)

2020: $18.6 billion (19.9%)

2021: $19.8 billion (18.6%)

2022: $20.7 billion (18.9%)

2023: $21.6 billion (20.1%)

Last Twelve Months (LTM): $21.7 billion (20.3%)

 

Hmmmm. Very unusual behavior for someone price gouging me. Let's sum this all up by looking at their operating cash flow:

 

2018: $6.3 billion (8.4% of sales)

2019: $7.0 billion (9.0%)

2020: $8.8 billion (9.4%)

2021: $11.3 billion (10.7%)

2022: $6.2 billion (5.7%)

2023: $8.1 billion (7.6%)

Last Twelve Months (LTM): $8.1 billion (7.6%)

 

So, what this all means is that Target's making less overall profit on every dollar of revenue today (7.6 cents) than they were in 2018 (8.4 cents). And revenue has grown at an average (CAGR) of 7.3% per year since 2018 and operating cash flow has grown at 5.1% per year - both of which are pretty much in line w/ the overall rate of inflation during that period.

 

I guess I expected price gouging to be more profitable.

2018 Gross Margin: 69.7%

LTM Gross Margin: 64.0%

2018 EBITDA Margin: 12.1%

LTM EBITDA Margin: 15.6%

 

"A-HA! Look at that EBITDA margin!" you say, "They must be gouging!"

 

Well, the gross margin clearly says otherwise, and the five-year EBITDA CAGR is 6.6% - pretty much in line with inflation. Again, management is clearly bad at gouging.

"Well ok," you say, "I'm sure International Paper must be capturing all of that extra profit because they're the ones gouging then."

 

Let's take a look:

LTM Gross Margin: 27.8%

2018 EBITDA Margin: 16.1%

LTM EBITDA Margin: 11.6%

 

Wowza, I guess IP is the worst price gouger of all since, well, they've basically been destroying value since before COVID began. You would think price gougers would be gouging to, I don't know, make more money and all. Well, IP made almost $3 billion of EBITDA in 2019, and a little over $2 billion over the last twelve months. Sigh.

So, maybe this means the inflation we've been dealing with hasn't been about corporate greed and price gouging after all. Maybe it has had something to do with, oh, I don't know, government spending and stimulus run amok or something.

 

So, rather than going on populist rants about implementing price controls for the greedy corporations (which, you know, have never worked out so well in the past), maybe we should consider some price controls for government spending.

“We are absolutely going to be conducting fermentations under microgravity in the future, as we continue space exploration, and there are going to be outcomes that will be very difficult for us to predict,” Andrew MacIntosh, study co-author and UF/IFAS associate professor of food science, said in an accompanying university announcement on August 14.

Getting a beer brewer’s starter kit up to the International Space Station, however, isn’t quite in the cards yet. Instead, the UF team led by undergraduate researcher Pedro Fernandez Mendoza created a tiny microgravity simulator here on Earth.

After gathering locally grown barley and mashing it into wort (grain-derived sugary liquid necessary for beers and whiskey), Mendoza and colleagues portioned it out into six samples.

They then added the yeast used in lagers, Saccharomyces pastrorianus, to each tube before leaving three of them to act as controls.

The other trio were placed in a clinostat—a tool capable of simulating microgravity conditions by constantly rotating its contents around a horizontal axis.

Over the course of three days, the team then assessed their fermenting baby-beers at regular intervals on the basis of density, yeast counts, and yeast viability.

 

After three days, researchers were able to confirm one of their initial hypotheses that microgravity doesn’t appear to harmfully affect fermentation.

What’s more, the fermentation process actually sped up in the clinostat samples as compared to their controls.

But there was one additional, unexpected result—microgravity yeast may allow for even higher quality products than simply fermenting here on Earth.

Although further investigation is needed, researchers think this might relate to a particular gene in yeast that oversees the levels of ester—fermentation byproducts responsible for both good and bad beer flavors.

 

Typically, the ratio between high alcohol groups and lager ester amounts ranges between 3-4:1, with higher ratios offering a drier, less aromatic beer.

The team recorded their control samples as having a ratio of 1.4:1, while their microgravity beer measured 4.6:1, implying the latter was “less aromatic by this measure.”

Meanwhile, two esters in particular, isoamyl acetate and 2-phenethyl acetate, showed “significant differences” between microgravity and controls.

Higher concentrations of these esters produce a fruity, banana-like flavor in beers that many drinkers often consider undesirable.

In the microgravity brews, a “multiple-fold decrease” in ester concentration compared to the standard examples.

 

“Depending upon the brewery, these compounds may be desirable; however, the presence of these compounds above a detection threshold would usually be considered a defect,” the team writes.

Given this, their microgravity results offered a final product “that would be considered higher quality due to the reduced esters.

As for brewing in space, researchers now believe microgravity may actively help things along to create better beers, and may even “provide benefits not realized terrestrially.”

 

MacIntosh and his team, however, can’t attest to any potential benefits just yet—they didn’t try their concoctions.

“Unfortunately when we make beer for science we use rather boring recipes,” he tells Popular Science while making sure to note “there are a few local collaborators who make very decent quality beer upon whom we rely for quality when it is deemed necessary…”

The PLA took note of the magnificent performance of these weapons and focused its efforts on acquiring cruise missiles and their relevant technologies since the early 1990s. China is keen to develop its own Tomahawk-like long-range cruise missiles to deliver conventional and unconventional payloads. This is a time-consuming, technically challenging, and costly endeavour, but it offers China an opportunity to strengthen its manufacturing and technical capabilities, and it could become a source of national pride.

Drawing inspiration from the experience of the development of the airship missiles, the Third Institute boldly innovated and scientifically predicted the future development of the weaponry and equipment. Taking the key technologies of the card neck as a breakthrough point, the institute proposed a pre-research program aimed at the international advanced level at that time.

The Sword-10 is the first type of ground-to-ground cruise missile developed by China and the first missile in the Sword series. The successful development of Sword-10 made China the third country in the world to independently develop, manufacture and equip cruise missiles after the United States and the Soviet Union.

Reports of uncertain reliability claimed in the late 1990s that China was working on several advanced ground-based LACMs: the Changfeng ["Long Wind"] CF-1 and CF-2 [also termed Chang Feng and Chang Feng-JIA], and Hong Niao (HN)-1 and HN-2 missile, with a range between 400 km and 1,800 km, with conventional and possibly nuclear warheads. The ground-launched Hong Niao missiles were said to be fitted with tandem solid-rocket boosters.

In 1995 it was reported that China was funding Israeli development of an air-launched cruise missile based on the Israeli Delilah anti-radiation attack drone, with a 230-mile range. The new missile reportedly was to be larger than the Delilah, while retaining its basic configuration. The range and CEP of the Chang Feng air-launched LACM are claimed to be 600km and 15m, respectively, and Chang Feng -JIA 1300km and 5m. Similar accuracy claims are made for the Hong Niao family of missiles, though these would appear to be rather optimistic.

In May 2001 an air-to-surface missile was reportedly launched from an H-6 bomber. The test, reportedly the first time China had launched the new cruise missile, was apparently deemed successful by US defense and intelligence agencies. The missile, reportedly an extended-range version of the C-802 anti-ship missile, was assessed as being capable of carrying a 500-kilogram warhead to a range of at least 150 kilometers.

The first operational long range Chinese cruise missile, the Hong Niao ("Red Bird") may have entered service as early 1992. The HN-1 was reportedly tested in mid-1999 to a range of 600km. The Hong Niao reportedly derived from the Russian KH-65SE/SD, a short-range version of the Russian Kh-55 [AS-15 KENT] 3,000-kilometer-range strategic cruise missile. The HN-1 apparently has straight folding wings at the mid-body, with a folding tailplane rear assembly. The engine is mounted in the rear of the missile, with an air inlet under the fuselage. Some sources suggest that this missile features inertial guidance with a terrain following radar altimeter, and scene-matching terminal guidance. The missile is variously reported to be able to carry a nuclear, high explosive, or cluster munition warhead.

Reportedly the HN-2 version, with an improved engine and range extended to at least 1,500 kilometers (930 miles), was introduced as early as 1996. In February 2000, Lin Chong-pin, vice chairman of the cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council, stated that Beijing had also developed a mid-range "Hongniao 2" cruise missile. According to an August 2001 report of doubtful reliability, PLA Navy vessels involved in June 2001 exercises test-fired for the first time the Hongniao-2 cruise missiles, which was claimed to have a range of 1,000 km. According to some reports, the HongNiao-II may have a range of 1,800km, with an inertial and terrain-following guidance system.

Ominous black ring appears over US state

A mysterious black ring appeared in the blue skies over Virginia this week, which hovered for about 10 minutes before vanishing.

Williamsburg locals flooded news station around 11am ET on Tuesday when they spotted the ominous circle over a major highway.

Ron Stepp said that he was working near Eastern State Hospital when it appeared above like a huge smoke ring in the sky.

 

Others reported the sighting from nearby neighborhoods, suggesting it was visible for miles.

Similar black rings have been spotted in other locations, with fires and explosions being cited as the likely cause.

But officials reported no fires at the time of the sighting.

 

Peggy Olszyk captured the black ring as it hung over tree tops, while Renee Fisher snapped a couple photos of it from outside a neighborhood.

Two other viewers sent in photos to the station taken on Interstate 64 westbound in the area of the Fort Eustis exit, and in the area of Old Moretown Road.

This isn't the first time an object like this has been see floating in the sky.

 

In June, a similar looking ring-shaped cloud was spotted over Venezuela and captured in a now viral video.

'A flying saucer,' one of the young men shouts as they drove down a rode on a sunny afternoon.

And in July, another floating black ring was photographed drifting across an orange and pink sunset over Pearland, Texas.

 

There have been numerous other sightings all across the world as well - it seems that these mysterious objects can pop up pretty much anywhere.

But so far, no one has officially confirmed what these objects are or where they came from. But there are some theories.

Experts have pointed to fire or some type of explosion that most likely create the rings, such as fireworks.

 

WAVY reached out to the James City County Fire Department to ask if there were any reports around the time the Williamsburg circle was reported.

The fire chief hadn’t heard of any.

The news station also reached out to Dominion Energy, a American energy company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, if there was a blown transformer that could have caused the ring.

Dominion spokesperson Tim Eberly told WAVY that there were no incidents this week involving equipment that could have caused a black ring of smoke.

 

But the news station's in-house meteorologist Ricky Mathews said he had seen these rings from pyrotechnics before - basically stemming from concentrated fire rising.

He also theorized that it could be a special effect used for a film.

Lightning can make energy waves that travel shockingly far into space

An overlooked mechanism lets energy from lightning reach the highest layers of the atmosphere, where it could threaten the safety of satellites and astronauts.

When lightning occurs, the energy it carries sometimes gives rise to special electromagnetic waves called whistlers, so named because they can be converted to sound signals.

For decades, researchers thought lightning-induced whistlers would remain trapped relatively close to Earth’s surface, below about 1000 kilometres.

 

Now Vikas Sonwalkar and Amani Reddy at the University of Alaska Fairbanks have discovered that some whistlers can bounce off a layer of the atmosphere called the ionosphere, which is filled with charged particles.

This enables the waves, and the energy they carry, to reach distances up to 20,000 kilometres above the planet’s surface.

That means they can travel deep into the magnetosphere, the region of space dominated by Earth’s magnetic field.

 

The researchers found evidence of these reflected whistlers in data from the Van Allen Probes, twin robotic spacecraft that measured the magnetosphere between 2012 and 2019.

They also saw signatures of this phenomenon in studies published as early as the 1960s.

Old and new data all suggest that it is very frequent and happening constantly, says Reddy.

 

In fact, lightning could be contributing twice as much energy to this area of space as previous estimates indicated, the team says.

And this energy charges and accelerates nearby particles, producing electromagnetic radiation that can damage satellites and harm the health of astronauts.

 

“Lightning was always believed to be a little bit of a smaller player.

We haven’t had this data until a decade ago, and we have certainly not been looking at it with this great level of detail,” says Jacob Bortnik at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The new work extends an invitation to other researchers to develop a more accurate picture of the magnetosphere, he says.

 

Establishing the link between lightning and the magnetosphere is also important because changes in Earth’s climate may be making lightning-heavy storms more common, says Sonwalkar.

The team now wants to analyse data from more satellites.

It hopes to learn more about how lightning-based whistlers populate the magnetosphere, and how they may be affected by space weather.

Just over a month after the implementation of Resolution 225, whichsets a cap on the prices of basic products, the Cuban government has acknowledged difficulties in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), where the availability of chicken has significantly decreased.

 

The measure, designed to contain inflation and alleviate the economic burden on the population, has led to a shortage of the product in some markets, affecting both consumers and merchants in Santiago de Cuba, according to the state-run newspaper Sierra Maestra.

 

The Ministry of Finance and Prices (MFP) had announced that the resolution aimed to temporarily reduce the prices of six high-demand products—chicken parts, oil, powdered milk, pasta, and sausages—in an attempt to curb inflation and protect the citizens' purchasing power.

I worked in M&A in the food industry. Here’s a step-by-step summary of what would actually happen:

 

  1. The government announces that grocery retailers aren’t allowed to raise prices.

 

  1. Grocery stores, which operate on 1-2% net margins, can’t survive if their suppliers raise prices. So the government announces that food producers (Kraft Heinz, ConAgra, Tyson, Hormel, et. al.) also aren’t allowed to raise prices.

 

  1. Not all grocery stores are created equal. Stores in lower-income areas make less money than those in higher-income areas, as the former disproportionately sell lower-margin prepackaged foods (“center of the store”) instead of higher-margin fresh products like meat (“perimeter of the store”). Because stores in lower-income areas aren’t able to cover overhead (remember, even if their wholesale costs are fixed, their labor, utilities, insurance, and other operating expenses aren’t fixed… yet), grocery chains start to shut them down. Food deserts in rural areas and in low-income urban areas alike become worse.

  1. Small grocery chains start to shut down entirely, or get sold to larger chains like Kroger. In addition to not being able to cover fixed costs, a major reason for this is because they can no longer reliably secure delivery of products, due to producers prioritizing sales to larger customers, which are able to leverage their stronger balance sheets to offer superior payment terms.

 

  1. Smaller food producers—which typically sell via distributors, rather than directly to grocery chains—start to go out of business. Because these producers have an additional step their value chains, and because they have lower volumes over which to spread their fixed costs, their cost structure is inherently disadvantaged compared to major food producers. When grocery stores aren’t able to raise prices, cutting product costs becomes all the more important, and deprioritizing purchases from smaller producers is an easy way to do so.

 

  1. As supply chains break down, lines start to form outside grocery stores every morning. Cities assign police officers to patrol store parking lots, and food producers draft contingency plans to assign armed escorts to delivery trucks.

 

  1. The federal government announces a program to issue block grants for states to purchase and operate shuttered grocery stores. The USDA also seizes closed-down production facilities.
