Minneapolis Police Dept Hires First Noncitizen Police Officer, Elon Musk Posts Dire Warning

 

Four years ago, protesters set a Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) station on fire during the George Floyd riots. Hundreds of officers have left the MPD since Floyd died from a fentanyl overdose, yet the media continues to falsely claim it was murder. Amid calls to “defund” the MPD, the City Council moved $1.1 million from the police to the health department to fund “violence interrupters” who would mediate conflicts and head off further trouble.

The MPD has struggled to recruit new officers until it boosted salaries by nearly 22% over three years. The new recruits can expect to earn $85,000 by their third year.

 

The MPD swore in its first noncitizen officer, Lesly Vera, who is reported to be a legal, permanent US resident who holds a green card, but she is not a citizen. She was born in Mexico and grew up in Minneapolis. The MPD also hired its first Somali female officer, Ikran Mohamed.

 

Elon Musk cautioned Americans by noting the alarming similarity between the United States and the Roman Empire, which fell in 476 AD.

WASHINGTON — Elected officials are quickly responding to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) after he spread rumors that there are five "assassination teams" working throughout the United States with the aim of taking out former President Donald Trump.

Alex Jones’ InfoWars to Be Auctioned Off to Pay Sandy Hook Parents, Sets Bad Precedent

 

Alex Jones was the defendant in several defamation lawsuits brought by some of the parents of children who were reportedly killed in the Sandy Hook shooting event in 2012. Alex Jones failed to comply with discovery that resulted in summary judgements in the cases and led critics to question his non-compliance. Astronomical awards for damages in the cases totaled $1.5 billion, setting a precedent. He says the ‘lawfare’ lawsuits were used as show trials to frighten people to censor their speech.

It was reported that Jones offered to settle the cases for $55 million over 10 years, but the plaintiffs refused the offer. A judge ordered that Jones’ website, InfoWars, and social media sites be auctioned off to pay the plaintiffs. The auction is set for November 13, 2024. -JW Williams

I’ll be there shortly, but don’t like the reports that I’m getting about the Federal Government, and the Democrat Governor of the State, going out of their way to not help people in Republican areas. The Democrats are interfering with my Campaign by not giving us the proper number of people within Secret Service that are necessary for Security. They’re using them for themselves, even though they don’t need them - they draw “flies” - because they have no crowds, and for people like the President of Iran, who is doing everything possible to kill me. We need more Secret Service, and we need them NOW. It is ELECTION INTERFERENCE that we have to turn away thousands of people from arenas and venues because it is not being provided to us. Congress just authorized Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in money and help, and with the weak crowd participation that the Democrats get, there should be plenty “left over” for the Republican Party. China's enormous FAST radio telescope is getting even bigger

China has kicked off of a second phase of construction to enhance the capabilities of what is already the world's largest single-dish radio telescope.

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), situated in a karst region in Guizhou, southwest China, has been operating since January 2020.

But now a second phase will add 24 new moveable radio telescopes, each with a diameter of 131 feet (40 meters).

Construction officially started on Sept. 25, on the eighth anniversary of FAST's completion.

 

This expansion, named the FAST Core Array, aims to make use of the "quiet" electromagnetic environment that exists within a 3-mile (5 kilometers) radius around the telescope, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

The site was originally chosen for the area's remote location and natural topography.

When combined into an array, the new telescopes will enhance resolution and detection capabilities.

 

The plan aims to allow scientists deeper investigations into various fields, including gravitational wave events, fast radio bursts, supernovae and black hole tidal disruption events.

It will also contribute to space situational awareness, detection of small solar system objects, communication and control of deep space probes and other areas, according to a paper on the Array.

 

FAST was completed in 2016 and became fully operational in early 2020.

It has so far detected more than 900 pulsars, or fast-spinning neutron stars.

The giant facility has also been open to research requests from international scientists and teams since early 2021.

Letitia James may be winning lawfare but losing the war 1/2

In an age of lawfare, New York Attorney General Letitia James has always embraced the total war option. Her very appeal has been her willingness to use any means against political opponents.

 

James first ran for her office by pledging to bag Donald Trump on something, anything. She did not specify the violation, only that she would deliver the ultimate trophy kill for Democratic voters. James follows the view of what Prussian General Carl von Clausewitz said about war, law is merely politics “by other means.”

 

Yet, the political success of James in weaponizing her office has been in stark contrast with her legal setbacks in courts.

 

James earlier sought to use her office to disband the National Rifle Association, the most powerful gun rights organization in the country, due to self-dealing and corruption of executives. James notably did not target liberal groups accused of similar violations.The ridiculous effort to disband the NRA collapsed in court.

 

It did not matter. James knew that such efforts were performative and that New York voters did not care if such attacks failed. She will continue to win the lawfare battles, even if she loses the war.

 

This week, two of James’s best-known campaigns were struggling in court.

 

James is best known for her fraud case against Trump, in which she secured a $464 million fine and a ban on Trump from the New York real estate business for three years. That penalty, which has now risen to $489 million with interest, was in a case where no one had lost a dime due to the alleged inaccurate property valuations in bank loans secured by the Trump organization. Not only where the banks fully paid on the loans and made considerable profits, but they wanted to make additional loans to the Trump organization.

 

In appellate arguments this week, James’s office faced openly skeptical justices who raised the very argumentsthat some of us have made for years about the ludicrous fine imposed by Judge Arthur Engoron.

 

Justice David Friedman noted thatthis law “is supposed to protect the market and the consumers — I don’t see it here.”

 

His colleague Justice Peter Moulton told her office “The immense penalty in this case is troubling” and added, “How do you tether the amount that was assessed by [Engoron] to the harm that was caused here where the parties left these transactions happy?”

 

The answer, of course, is the case was never about markets. It was about politics. The fact that the banks were “happy” is immaterial.Happiness in New York is a political, not legal calculus. The justices did not rule this week, but an opinion could be issued within a month.

 

In the same week, James faced a stinging defeat in another popular cause. James had targeted pro-life organizations for spreading supposed “disinformation” in not just opposing the use of mifepristone(the abortion pill used in the majority of abortions in the United States), but in advocating the use of reversal procedures if mothers change their minds before taking the second drug in the treatment regimen.

 

Critics charge that, while there are some studies showing successful reversal cases, the treatment remains unproven and unapproved. It remains an intense debate.

 

James, however, wanted to end the debate.She targeted pregnancy centers and was then sued by two pro-life ministries=, Summit Life Outreach Center and the Evergreen Association.

 

Judge John Sinatra Jr. blocked James‘s crackdown as a denial of free speech. Notably, these centers were not profiting by sharing this information or advocating such reversal treatment.

 

James merely declared thatpeople advocating such reversal treatments are engaged in “spreading dangerous misinformation by advertising…without any medical and scientific proof.”

It is a familiar rationale on the left and discussed in my latest book, “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.”It is the same rationale that led to the banning and blacklisting of experts during the pandemicfor views that have now been vindicated on the efficacy of masks and other issues. They were silenced by those who declared their viewpoints as dangerously unproven or unapproved, but who were themselves wrong.

 

James claimed a right to crack down on views that she deemed unproven, even by those who were seeking only to disseminate information rather than sell products.

 

It did not seem to matter to her that, in the 2018 in NIFLA v. Becerra, the Supreme Court rejected the effort by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (now the secretary of Health and Human Services) to require crisis pregnancy centers to refer abortions.The court refused to create an exception for requiring speech from licensed professionals.

 

After the effort failed to force doctors to disseminate pro-abortion information in California,James sought to prevent others from disseminating pro-life information in New York. The court ruled that, under the First Amendment, government officialscannot simply declare certain views as “disinformation” as a pretext to censor disfavored speech.

 

If there are harmful or fraudulent products or practices, the government has ample powers to target businesses and professionals involved with them. James, however, was seeking to silence those who advocate for a treatment that is unproven but not unlawful.

 

James’s legacy now includes an effort to disband a civil rights organization, deny free speech and secure confiscatory fines against her political opponents. Yet she is lionized by the media and politicians in an election that is billed as “saving democracy.”

 

In the end, James knows her audience, and it is not appellate judges. It does not matter to her if she is found to be violating the Constitution or abusing opponents.She has converted the New York legal system into a series of thrill-kills.

 

For some judges, however, the thrill may be gone.

Nearing Hera era in space

Just visible in the background, with red tags placed on its corner thrusters, Hera has now been filled with propellant and as a next step awaits encapsulation within its launcher fairing.

Due to be launched on a Space Falcon 9, Hera is ESA's first planetary defence mission, heading to a unique target among the 1.3 million known asteroids of our Solar System.

 

If an incoming asteroid were to threaten Earth, what could people do about it?

On 26 September 2022 NASA’s DART mission performed humankind’s first test of asteroid deflection by crashing into the Great-Pyramid-sized Dimorphos moonlet.

The result was a shift in its orbit around the mountain-sized Didymos main asteroid.

 

Next comes ESA’s own contribution to this international collaboration: the Hera mission will revisit Dimorphos to gather vital close-up data about the deflected body, to turn DART’s grand-scale experiment into a well-understood and potentially repeatable planetary defence technique.

The mission will also perform the most detailed exploration yet of a binary asteroid system – although binaries make up 15% of all known asteroids, they have never been surveyed in detail.

Hera will also perform technology demonstration experiments, including the deployment ESA’s first deep space ‘CubeSats’ – shoebox-sized spacecraft to venture closer than the main mission then eventually land – and an ambitious test of 'self-driving' for the main spacecraft, based on vision-based navigation.

“I think you hear underneath all these questions, the question of mission creep,” Associate Justice Peter Moulton said. “Has 6312” — the statute in question — “morphed into something that it was not meant to do?”

 

“I will stress, your honor, that this does have harm to the public and to the markets,” Vale said in response.

 

Trump’s lawyer, D. John Sauer, also fielded questions about his arguments as the former president seeks to eliminate one of his most serious financial burdens as he heads into the final stretch of the presidential race.

 

Sauer argued that in the deals in question, there were “no victims, no complaints.” But Moulton wondered, “What about deterrence?”

 

Even if the transactions at issue in the Trump case “went down fine,” Moulton said, similar fraudulent conduct in the future “might not go down well, and someone would be harmed by that.”

 

The panel didn’t rule Thursday.

 

The former president hasn’t had to turn over the full amount of the judgment because a panel of state appeals judges allowed him to put up only a $175 million bond while he appeals the verdict.

Trump makes a surprising overture to Iran at NYC press conference

He pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and he’s been hostile on the campaign trail.

His remarks, amid what polls show is a close race against Vice President Kamala Harris, are notable given his hostility to Iran, both when he was in office and on the campaign trail — including his recent accusations of Iranian attempts to assassinate him.

 

In 2018, Trump withdrew from the agreement between Iran and major world powers that required Iran to dismantle its weapons program in exchange for sanctions relief. His administration opted instead for what it called a “maximum pressure” campaign that included tougher banking and oil industry sanctions that President Joe Biden has largely maintained.

 

Since then, Iran resumed enriching the uranium it needs to develop nuclear weapons — a threat that is likely to escalate tensions, and perhaps start an arms race, in the volatile Middle East.

 

With his remarks, Trump appeared to be trying to ease tensions with the Iranian government. His campaign said this week that U.S. intelligence officials told him Iran has been plotting to assassinate him. A grand jury Thursday indicted multiple Iranians on charges related to hacking Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

 

Trump said that he was prepared to make a deal with Iran “within one week after the election” if he had won in 2020.

 

“But Iran would have made a deal with us,” Trump said. “It would have been a great deal for them. The only thing is they cannot have nuclear weapons.”

 

The U.S. and Iran have been adversaries for decades but the two nations came close to war under Trump, who ordered a strike in 2020 that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

 

Iran’s foreign minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, said Monday that Tehran was open to discussing nuclear negotiations when he traveled to New York this week to attend the United Nations General Assembly. But he acknowledged that Middle East tensions may make it difficult to renew talks.

(Headline USA) Special counsel Jack Smith on Thursday filed, under seal, a legal brief that prosecutors said contained sensitive and previously unseen evidence in the federal lawfarecase charging former President Donald Trump for his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.

 

Critics said the brief would likely be unveiled as an “October surprise” pushing out derogatory information on Trump just before the Nov. 5 election with no time for him to defend himself.

 

With Smith and partisan, Obama-appointed Judge Tanya Chutkan having failed in their efforts to fast-track a full trial before voters choose the next president, a hearing on the brief would amount to a sort of de-facto bench trial.

 

If elected, Trump almost without a doubt would appoint officials at the Justice Department who would drop the case altogther and withdraw the charges.

 

According to The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway, the collusion between the D.C. District judge and the Justice Department special counsel constituted a “horrific violation of due process.”

 

Smith’s brief was aimed at defending a revised and stripped-down indictment that prosecutors filed last month to comply with a U.S. Supreme Courtruling that conferred broad immunity on former presidents.

 

Prosecutors said earlier in September that they intended to present a “detailed factual proffer,” including multiple exhibits and excerpts of grand jury testimony, to Chutkan in hopes of persuading her that the remaining allegations in the new indictment should not be dismissed and should continue to be part of the case.

 

A spokesman for the Smith team, Peter Carr, confirmed that prosecutors had met their 5 p.m. deadline for filing a brief.

 

Though the brief is not currently accessible to the public, prosecutors have said they intend to file a redacted version that could be made available later.

 

Some, including investigative journalist Julie Kelly, warned that Smith would attempt to cherry-pick negative information to selectively unseal from the brief, while keeping anonymous the sources of it—a ploy he previously attempted in his Florida classified documents case.

 

Although the effort failed in Florida under Trump-appointed Judge Aileen Cannon, Chutkan has routinely let her radical ideology cloud her sense of jurisprudence, even leading to a rebuke from Supreme Court in its decision on the immunity question.

 

The Trump team has vigorously objected to the filing, calling it unnecessary and saying it could improperly influence the upcoming presidential election.

 

“The Court does not need 180 pages of ‘great assistance’ from the Special Counsel’s Office to develop the record necessary to address President Trump’s Presidential immunity defense,” Trump’s lawyers wrote, calling it “tantamount to a premature and improper Special Counsel report.”

 

The brief is the opening salvo in a restructured criminal case following the Supreme Court’s opinion in July that said former presidents are presumptively immune for official acts they take in office but are not immune for their private acts.

 

In their new indictment, Smith’s team contended that some acts did not deserve immunity protections and will now seek to argue that Trump perpetrated such acts.

 

Chutkan is now responsible for making a decision on the brief. She stated Trump’s team has until Tuesday to issue an objection.

 

She has acknowledged that her decisions are likely to be subject to additional appeals to the Supreme Court.

China unveils lunar spacesuit for crewed moon mission

China’s human spaceflight agency has revealed the exterior design of the spacesuit for the country’s future crewed lunar landing missions.

The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) unveiled the extravehicular lunar suit Sept. 28 in Chongqing, southwest China.

CMSA is also soliciting suggestions for a name for the suit.

 

The suit is being developed as one element of China’s goal of landing astronauts on the moon before 2030.

China is also currently working on a new human-rated launcher, the Long March 10, a deep space crew spacecraft and a crew lander for the mission.

A crew rover is also being designed.

 

As part of the reveal, a promotional video showcased both the outer appearance and the suit’s key capabilities.

Astronauts Wang Yaping, China’s second woman in space, and Zhai Zhigang modeled the EVA suit.

The suit is described as having a comprehensively protective fabric that shields against the harsh thermal environment and lunar dust.

The helmet features a panoramic, anti-glare visor. The helmet also carries separate long and short focal length cameras. A multi-functional integrated control console is on the chest.

 

The suit also carries elements of Chinese culture. The red stripes on its upper sections are inspired by ribbons from the famous “flying apsaras” of Dunhuang art.

The overall design of the lunar suit was stated to draw on the style of traditional Chinese armor.

In contrast to China’s Feitian EVA suit used in low Earth orbit, the lunar suit one is designed to be lightweight, catering to the demands of activities in a low-gravity environment.

It allows for movements such as squatting and bending.

 

“The suit allows for more actions. So in various postures, the fitness shouldn’t be affected after a posture change.

Therefore it requires a better fit on the human body,” Wang Chunhui, deputy chief designer of the astronauts training systems at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, told China Central Television (CCTV).

Wang stated that the suit was designed to handle various harsh conditions. Complex environmental factors include vacuum and low gravity, lunar dust and regolith, complex surface topography, and extreme high and low temperatures.

It also needs to protect astronauts from a high radiation environment.

 

“Considering that they are working under one-sixth gravity, in order to reduce the metabolic load of the human body, it is a must to greatly reduce the suit’s weight,” Wang said.

“As astronauts will walk on the lunar surface and carry out scientific research activities, the spacesuits must have better ergonomic support capabilities, and be smaller and more integrated,” he added.

China’s crewed landing plan is for two astronauts to make a short, roughly six-hour-duration stay on the lunar surface. However, the mission is part of a longer-term lunar exploration effort.

 

The country will send robotic missions to the lunar south pole in 2026 and 2028 for resource surveys and in-situ resource utilization tests as a precursor to a moon base.

The International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) is to be built in the 2030s. It will eventually be capable of hosting short term human stays.

NASA, meanwhile, is working on its Artemis program to return astronauts to the moon and build a sustained lunar presence.

 

The Artemis 3 crewed landing mission is currently scheduled for no earlier than September 2026. However, the agency’s own analysis suggests potential significant delays for the Artemis 3 lunar lander.

NASA selected Axiom Space in 2022 to develop a spacesuit to be used on the Artemis 3 mission. Both China and NASA are engaged in efforts to attract partners for ILRS and Artemis respectively.

"An impending strike at U.S. East Coast and Gulf ports could impact the U.S. economy by as much as $4 billion a day, Jefferies analysts said, but a number of container-shipping stocks could benefit from market conditions.

This has worsened congestion at US ports and contributed to an increase in overtime hours worked for manufacturing employees, according to the Oxford team. "Any disruption at ports would worsen congestion significantly as demand for imports in the US remains healthy, thanks to solid growth in real consumer spending, especially as we approach the holiday shopping season."

Southern Taiwan would be more heavily affected by the storm if the northward turn takes place later than forecast, she said.

He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

 

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

 

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

 

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

 

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Nasa reveals shock images of battered Mars rover after ‘worst abuse’ in its search for alien life

A robot on the hunt for signs of alien life on Mars has taken a huge battering, shock new images released by Nasa show.

The Curiosity rover has been busy gathering rocks for more than 12 years to workout whether the Red Planet was ever able to support life.

It's been exploring the Gale Crater since 2012, clocking over 20 miles.

 

But the lengthy visit has taken its toll on the device, after surviving multiple dust storms and Mars' challenging terrain.

Images released by Nasa show Curiosity's wheels have sustained some extensive damage.

They show very clear gaping holes in the aluminium wheels.

 

It's been exploring the Gale Crater since 2012, clocking over 20 miles.

But the lengthy visit has taken its toll on the device, after surviving multiple dust storms and Mars' challenging terrain.

Images released by Nasa show Curiosity's wheels have sustained some extensive damage.

They show very clear gaping holes in the aluminium wheels. Curiosity has six wheels in total.

 

Fortunately, Nasa doesn't appear to be too worried about the damage.

The $2.5billion (£1.9billion) machine is "still holding up well despite taking some of the worst abuse from Mars", according to Ashley Stroupe, Mission Operations Engineer at Nasa.

Holes and tears grew quite a bit in Curiosity's first year on the Red Planet.

Since then, experts controlling the bot have been trying to avoid nasty environments to prevent further holes.

 

They've also issued special updates to adjust speed.

"The wheel wear has been cause for concern, and although we estimate they have years of life still in them, we do want to reduce that wear whenever possible to extend the life of the wheels," Art Rankin, part of Nasa's test team, said back in 2017.

During it's time on Mars, Curiosity has stumbled across an array of mysterious objects.

 

The space agency recently revealed it found yellow crystals that "shouldn’t be there".

Curiosity has certainly defied the odds, far outliving the two-year mission time period it was originally given.

These days the bot isn't alone on Mars, with the Perseverance also investigating on the surface.

Nasa built thicker, more durable wheels for Perseverance to avoid the sort of damage seen on Curiosity.

 

Car-sized Perseverance has been on Mars since February 18, 2021.

China launches reusable Shijian-19 satellite for space breeding and technology tests

China launched the retrievable and reusable Shijian-19 satellite Friday to carry out a range of experiments in low Earth orbit.

A Long March 2D rocket lifted off at 8:30 a.m. Eastern (1030 UTC) Sept. 27 from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert.

Exhaust from the hypergolic rocket billowed into the air as the launcher ascended into largely clear blue skies above the spaceport.

The Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) announced launch success, revealing the payload to be the Shijian-19 satellite.

 

Shijian-19 is a retrievable satellite developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

The same arm of China’s main space contractor is also developing a reusable crew spacecraft for low Earth orbit (LEO) and lunar and deep space missions.

U.S. Space Force’s Space Delta 2 tracked Shijian-19 in a 322 by 339-kilometer-altitude orbit inclined by 41.6 degrees.

 

The mission is geared towards space breeding experiments and carries various plant seeds selected from a range of locations.

Researchers hope the exposure to the radiation environment of LEO will instigate mutations that may bring about advantages such as shorter breeding cycles and other beneficial variations.

The mission patch features a parachute, returning capsule, and three rabbits, which may be drawing on themes of fertility and a link to the space breeding experiments.

 

In China, space breeding has become an increasingly important avenue for attempting to improve agricultural outputs.

Exposure to space conditions is thought to accelerate genetic mutations that may enhance crop resilience and productivity.

The Shijian-19 mission also includes in-orbit flight test verification tests for domestic components and raw materials and the development and application of new space technologies.

The reusable spacecraft is intended to be utilized for this and other microgravity science and space life science experiments.

 

The mission also carries payloads from five countries, including Thailand and Pakistan, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

CAST officials had presented the reusable, retrievable Shijian satellite series back in 2018.

It was stated that around 15 missions were planned for the period 2019-2025. Friday was, however, the first launch.

 

The Shijian-19 satellite, weighing approximately 3,500 kilograms, has different configurations for varying mission durations.

The short-term version, designed for missions lasting about two weeks, will return to Earth promptly.

The long-term configuration, equipped with solar arrays on its propulsion and power module, will remain in orbit longer, supporting extended experiments.

The recoverable portion can carry between 500 to 600 kilograms of payload.

 

The landing site was initially stated to be Siziwang Banner in Inner Mongolia, but the Dongfeng landing area, closer to Jiuquan and where China’s Shenzhou crews now return, is a more likely site.

The payload fairing for the mission was attached to the rocket 48 hours ahead of launch. Conversely, China’s previous retrievable satellite launch, Shijian-10 in 2016, did not feature a payload fairing.

The Shijian-19 mission is part of China’s broader space program, which includes ambitious plans for deep space exploration, a range of experiments aboard the Tiangong space station, and advancements in reusable space technologies.

 

The launch was China’s 46th of 2024. It follows the launch of five satellites on the fourth Lijian-1 (Kinetica-1) solid rocket from CAS Space, Sept. 24.

CASC said late September it plans to conduct more than 20 launches before the end of the year. These include the Shenzhou-19 crewed and Tianzhou-8 cargo missions to Tiangong space station.

The new Long March 12 rocket is expected to have its inaugural flight, while a Long March 8 will also fly from Hainan’s new commercial spaceport.

CONYERS, Ga. (AP) — More than 90,000 residents east of Atlanta were told to keep sheltering in place Monday a day after a chemical plant fire sent a massive plume of dark smoke high into the sky that could been seen for miles.

 

The haze and chemical smell had spread to Atlanta by Monday morning, prompting firefighters to use detectors to check the quality of air in various parts of the city, Mayor Andre Dickens said.

 

Closer to the source of the fire, officials said chlorine, a harmful irritant, had been detected in the air from the fire at the BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia, the Rockdale County government said in statement early Monday. The plant is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of downtown Atlanta.

 

“For everyone sheltering in place, the best practice is to turn the air conditioning off and keep windows and doors shut,” the statement said.

 

In Atlanta, officials said they believe the hazy conditions and chemical smell is “related to the BioLab fire, but why we are seeing the change in conditions is what we are attempting to figure out.”

 

“Latest plume modeling indicates it moving to the northeast, which it is clearly not,” the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — What you need to know:

 

About 17,000 people have been evacuated around Biolab facility.

I-20 has been shut down between Salem Road and Turner Hill Road.

Newton County Schools will be closed on Monday because of a chemical fire.

Rockdale Schools are off this week, 12-month employees will work remotely.

Smoke could be visible for several days.

EPA and the EPD are both on scene assessing the situation.

Fire started around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

The sprinkler system reacted with a chemical inside the factory.

Roof has collapsed on building along with several walls.

Piedmont Rockdale has moved some patients, others to shelter-in-place.

What happened:

 

All Rockdale County residents have been ordered to shelter in place after a chemical fire broke out at the Biolab facility on Old Covington Highway.

 

It all started around 5:30 a.m. Sunday when a sprinkler system malfunctioned, which seems to have mixed with a chemical creating a plume. You can see the smoke billowing miles into the sky, changing colors throughout the day from black, white, red and now to a yellowish hue seen by Channel 2′s Michael Doudna on Sunday evening.

 

Crews got the fire under control on Sunday morning, but it reignited around 12:15 p.m.

 

Officials say the fire has since been put out, but the building itself has collapsed.

 

“The roof is collapsed in totally as well as several of the walls, which is why we have been trying to assemble it all together and move it away to make a better path to move out the product,” Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel said.

 

Officials are stressing that people should take this seriously.

 

“As the plume starts out, it could become very dangerous, and toxic. So, until we get those readings from EPA and EPD, we don’t know what those plumes consist of, so we want to keep everyone safe and away from it as much as possible,” Rockdale County Emergency Management Director Sharon Webb said.

Netanyahu's 'War On Seven Fronts': Expanded Attacks On Yemen, Syria, Central Beirut

 

Israel has been busy over the weekend striking multiple fronts. Not only has it expanded airstrikes on Beirut in the wake of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's Friday death, but it is attacking Yemen and Syria as well.

 

Starting late last week into Saturday, Yemen's Iran-linked Houthis announced the launch of several ballistic missiles toward Tel Aviv, which Israel's military said were intercepted. And on Friday, in an incident which went underreported (given headlines were focused heavily on Beirut events), three US warships in the Red Sea came under simultaneous rocket attacks from the Houthis.

 

"The Houthi said they had targeted three U.S. warships which media reports tonight are identifying as the guided missile destroyers USS Spruance and USS Stockdale and the littoral combat ship USS Indianapolis. They were reported to have been north of the Bab el-Mandeb at the time," The Maritime Executive reported.

 

"U.S. officials are confirming that warships in the Red Sea were targeted with possibly the largest barrage since the conflict began with the Houthis in Yemen nearly 10 months ago," the publication added.

 

On Sunday Israeli jets had the assistance of US military intelligence as they conducted a massive airstrike on Yemen's key port of Hodeidah. It happened in the early evening local time. Axios reports that "sensitive" Houthis facilities were on the target list.

 

Yemen's Health Ministry in the aftermath announced that at least four people were killed and 40 others injured in the Israeli raid, which left massive plumes of smoke over the area.

 

Israeli media has confirmed that it was the biggest Israeli strike on Yemen since the conflict began in the wake of Oct.7 of last year. "Dozens of Israeli aircraft, including F-15I fighter planes, participated in the operation, striking 1,800 kilometers from Israeli territory after the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles on the Tel Aviv and central Israel areas in recent weeks, including one on Saturday," Jerusalem Post details.

 

During Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Friday United Nations speech, the Israeli leader said his country is fighting a war on seven fronts. He brought props, as has been his pattern at major UN speeches:

 

The Israeli leader explained “the blessing” was establishing a “landbridge” from India to Israel. The blessing requires Saudi Arabia to enter the Abraham Accords and normalize ties with Israel. Netanyahu claimed that would have happened, but the October 7 Hamas attack prevented the deal.

The Israeli leader claimed that Tehran was working to eliminate Tel Aviv using its allies in the region. US Military Airstrikes Kill 37 Terrorists In Syria

 

The U.S. military targeted and eliminated more than three dozen terrorists in Syria in two mid-September strikes, U.S. Central Command announced Sunday.

 

“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Forces conducted two targeted strikes in Syria, killing 37 terrorist operatives, including multiple senior leaders of the terrorist organizations of ISIS and Hurras al-Din, an Al Qaeda affiliate,” CENTCOM’s statement began.

 

The U.S. military carried out the first airstrike early Sept. 16 against a remote ISIS training camp in central Syria, according to the statement. No fewer than 28 Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) operatives — including at least four senior leaders — were reportedly killed.

 

The second airstrike occurred Sept. 24 in northwest Syria. Among the nine terrorist operatives killed was Marwan Bassam ‘Abd-al-Ra’uf, a senior Hurras al-Din leader responsible for overseeing military operations from Syria, CENTCOM said.

 

“Hurras al-Din is an Al Qaeda-affiliated organization based in Syria with global aspirations to conduct attacks against U.S. and Western interests,” the statement continues.

 

CENTCOM forces eliminated another senior Hurras al-Din member, Abu-’Abd al-Rahman al-Makki, in a similar Aug. 23 strike, according to a separate statement.

A criminal investigation is under way after staff at the US Department of Veterans Affairs illicitly accessed the medical records of Tim Walz and JD Vance, the Democratic and Republican vice-presidential nominees.

 

At least a dozen employees – including one doctor and one contractor – at the department’s healthcare body, the Veterans Health Administration, are believed to have improperly viewed the files, according to the department’s investigators.

 

Evidence has been passed to federal prosecutors by the office of the Veterans Affairs (VA) inspector, Michael Missal. The physician and contractor are believed to have looked at the documents for an extended period, law enforcement officials told the Washington Post, prompting concerns about their motives.

 

Other employees who saw the files are understood to have told investigators that they were curious about the background of two politicians who have been under public scrutiny since being elevated on to their parties’ presidential tickets.

 

…After the violation came to light, Denis McDonough, the VA secretary, wrote to the department’s 450,000 employees reminding them of the strict rules on veterans’ privacy.

US Not Withdrawing from Iraq

The US and Iraq on Friday announced a plan that will end the mission of the US-led anti-ISIS coalition in Iraq, but US troops will remain in the country under a “bilateral security partnership.”

 

Iraqi security officials told The Associated Press that US troops would be withdrawing from a base at the Baghdad International Airport and the Ain al-Asad Airbase in Western Iraq. US officials refuse to say how many of the 2,500 US troops in Iraq, if any, will be leaving the country.

 

“The US is not withdrawing from Iraq,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh told reporters on Friday. She said the US would be changing its “footprint” in the country but wouldn’t share any details.

 

“This is a step in our relationship and a progress towards a bilateral security agreement, and we’ll have more details to share when we’re ready,” Singh said.

 

Under the plan, the anti-ISIS coalition in Iraq will officially end its mission by September 2025, but it will continue to operate in Syria and be supported from Iraqi territory until September 2026. The US has about 900 troops occupying eastern Syria and backs the Kurdish-led SDF, allowing the US to control about one-third of Syria’s territory.

 

The plan is unlikely to placate the many elements in Iraq who want the US to leave, and it could lead to more rocket and drone attacks on US bases. Recent Israeli escalations in Lebanon could also provoke attacks on US troops in Iraq and Syria.

 

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani began calling for an end to the US military presence following an escalation between the US and Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), a coalition of mostly Shia militias that are part of Iraq’s security forces.

 

The US launched heavy airstrikes against the PMF over rocket and drone attacks on US bases, which began in response to US support for Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza. Hundreds of attacks targeted US bases before a drone hit Tower 22, a secretive US base in Jordan on the Syrian border, in January, killing three US Army Reserve soldiers.

 

The Iraqi government has been under pressure to expel the US since January 2020, when a US drone strike in Baghdad killed Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani and PMF leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. After the strike, the Iraqi parliament voted to expel US forces, but the US refused to leave.

 

The US has been able to stay in Iraq due to the significant economic leverage it has over the country. Since the 2003 invasion, Iraq’s foreign reserves have been held by the US Federal Reserve, giving Washington control over Baghdad’s dollar supply and the ability to devalue the Iraqi dinar.
