Supreme Court clears way for Virginia to remove 1,600 alleged noncitizens from voter rolls

Washington — The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed Virginia to move forward with its removal of roughly 1,600 alleged noncitizens from its voter rolls just days before the 2024 election.

The high court granted a request from state officials to pause a lower court order that blocked Virginia from continuing its systematic voter removal program that was launched in August, exactly 90 days before Election Day. A provision of the National Voter Registration Act requires states to complete programs aimed at purging ineligible voters from registration lists up to 90 days before federal elections.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson said they would have denied the request from Virginia officials.

Virginia officials had asked the Supreme Court to grant its request for emergency relief by Tuesday. They claimed that the district court's order violates Virginia law "and common sense," and "mandates a variety of disruptive measures."

The injunction issued by the lower court will harm "Virginia's sovereignty, confuse her voters, overload her election machinery and administrators, and likely lead noncitizens to think they are permitted to vote, a criminal offense that will cancel the franchise of eligible voters," state officials wrote.

Federal and Virginia law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections.

Virginia's bid for the Supreme Court's intervention arose from a Justice Department lawsuit filed against the state earlier this month that targeted an executive order from Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican. The order formalized a systematic program to remove from statewide voter registration lists people who were unable to verify that they are citizens to the Department of Motor Vehicles. State officials said the program was in place, and the order merely changed the frequency of the data reporting from monthly to daily.

The Justice Department argued that the implementation of the program violates the so-called Quiet Period Provision, a section of the National Voter Registration Act that bars states from implementing programs that seek to remove ineligible voters from their rolls by no later than 90 days before an election. Federal officials have said the quiet period aims to mitigate the risk that eligible voters will be mistakenly removed from voter rolls through automatic removal programs and ensure they have enough time to fix any errors.

Youngkin announced his state's systematic program on Aug. 7, exactly 90 days before the Nov. 5 general election.

U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles granted the Justice Department's request for a preliminary injunction Friday, ordering the state to restore the voter registrations of roughly 1,600 people who were purged from state rolls under Youngkin's program. Giles found the state likely violated federal law when it systematically canceled those voters' registrations during the so-called quiet period.

A panel of three judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit upheld the district court's order Sunday, saying in a brief order that it is "unpersuaded" by the argument from Virginia officials that the state's program doesn't violate the federal voter registration law.

The three-judge panel found state officials were wrong to assert that they were ordered to restore roughly 1,600 noncitizens to voter rolls, as they failed to establish that those removed under Youngkin's program were actually noncitizens. It reiterated that some of the people whose voter registrations were canceled are eligible to cast ballots.

In their request to the Supreme Court, Virginia officials argued the Quiet Period Provision doesn't apply to the removal of noncitizens from the state's voter rolls, since they're not eligible to vote at all. Still, they said that those who were identified as noncitizens and registered voters are informed that their registrations will be canceled and given 14 days to verify that they are citizens.

State officials argued in their filing that theJustice Department and voting rights groups asked the district court to "inject itself into the Commonwealth's reasonable and longstanding election processes within a month of the election, and weeks after early voting had begun."

They also refuted the characterization of its efforts to purge alleged noncitizens from its rolls, noting that Youngkin's order did not create the state's process, but rather increased the frequency of data-sharing among agencies from monthly to daily.

Ballot boxes in Oregon and Washington were set on fire with incendiary devices early Monday in what authorities believe are connected incidents, police said.

The devices used in the arson incidents carried markings with the expression "Free Gaza," two sources familiar with the ongoing investigation told ABC News.

The ballot box fires, which occurred near the Oregon-Washington border, are also believed to be connected to a third ballot box incident that occurred earlier this month in Vancouver, Washington, police said.

The sources said the incendiary device used in the first arson, back on Oct. 8, had "Free Gaza" and "Free Palestine" on it. The two subsequent devices, set off in the early hours of Monday morning in Vancouver, Washington and nearby Portland, Oregon, carried the slogan "Free Gaza."

One of the sources told ABC News it was unclear whether these markings reflect the views of a pro-Palestine activist – or if it was an individual trying to manipulate existing divisions in U.S.

In the first reported incident on Monday, Portland police responded to a fire at a ballot box around 3:30 a.m. local time, police said. Security at the Multnomah County Elections Division responded and extinguished the fire, officials said.

"Our officers quickly determined that there was an incendiary device that had been attached to the ballot box, and that is what ignited this fire," Portland Police Bureau spokesperson Mike Benner said at a press briefing on Monday.

The bureau's explosive disposal unit cleared the device, police said.

Fire suppressant prevented further damage and protected "virtually all the ballots," though three were damaged, the Multnomah County Elections Division said in a press release.

Elections officials said they are contacting the three impacted voters so they can receive replacement ballots.

Lawmakers Fear Post-election Violence

House members from both major parties have expressed concerns about potential violence following next week's presidential election.

Republican lawmakers are worried if former President Donald Trump defeats Vice President Kamala Harris in the race for the White House, progressives and leftists will refuse to accept another Trump term, Axios reported.

"I think there's a very good chance they will do it again," Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., citing rioting during Trump's inauguration in 2017, told Axios.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., added he suspects the likelihood of violence "is higher if Trump wins. Like we saw on Jan. 20, 2017."

Meanwhile, Democrats are worried Trump supporters will challenge the election outcome if Harris wins.

"We're certainly in a heightened threat environment here. There's no doubt about it … so we're going to have to be vigilant about it and make sure we're taking precautions," Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., said.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned state and local law enforcement agencies of domestic extremists seeking to disrupt the general election, NBC News reported Monday.

Lawmakers, though, are concerned about what might occur in Washington, D.C., and the Capitol after the election.

The Nebraska Examiner reported earlier this month the Secret Service is tasked with planning and coordinating security for Congress' certification of the Electoral College on Jan. 6 – the first time it has been designated a National Special Security Event – and Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

The Secret Service confirmed to Axios that security enhancements – including plans for fencing erected around the Capitol complex – have been made in the run-up to the certification of presidential electors Jan. 6.

Capitol Police performed a "casualty evacuation exercise" Monday night that involved landing three helicopters on the East Front of the Capitol.

"What I saw in terms of security was unprecedented," Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio, told Axios when Congress left for recess in September.

With the presidential election expected to be close and with several states possibly needing time to verify results, some lawmakers expressed concern the possibility or political violence could exist for a while.

"It's going to take some time to process ballots, so there's a lot of concern about those several days that follow the election," Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., said, Axios reported, "about security, but also just about the ramped up rhetoric that we all expect."

Last week, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., issued a rare joint statement, calling on Harris to stop her "irresponsible rhetoric" aimed at Trump.

"For months, we've been hearing extreme and sometimes violent rhetoric," Darrell M. West, the Douglas Dillon Chair in Governmental Studies at the Brookings Institution, told States Newsroom. "And rhetoric has consequences — it can encourage some people to take action."

Now you can join Cloudspotting on Mars: Shapes, a new NASA citizen science project, and help identify beautiful cloud formations on the Red Planet.

Mars has kinds of clouds you may not have seen before, such as “twilight clouds,” “vortex clouds,” and “disk clouds”.

You’ll view spectacular images of Mars’s atmosphere from space to look for these clouds and check that what you’re seeing isn’t a volcano or patch of ice on the surface.

By classifying cloud types, you’ll help researchers better understand the availability of water vapor, wind patterns, and the factors influencing Mars’s daily weather patterns.

This research is critical for expanding our knowledge of present-day atmospheric conditions on Mars, which is essential for understanding the historical climate of Mars and its evolution.

You’ll be examining data from NASA’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) spacecraft. MAVEN entered orbit around Mars a decade ago, on Sept. 21, 2014.

It has produced a wealth of data about how Mars’ atmosphere responds to the Sun and solar wind, and how these interactions can explain the loss of the Martian atmosphere to space.

MAVEN is still taking new data–so there will be plenty to work on!

Some Clark mail came in overnight, cut the GOP statewide lead to 40,500, or 5.2 points.

Overall Clark mail was nearly 26,000 ballots, which again lagged beyond the 30,000 who voted in the South in person.The Dems only gained 1,600 in Clark Countyon Tuesday when both methods are combined, so the GOP lead overall remains robust thanks to a strong Washoe showing andespecially the rurals.

790,000 people have voted. About 60 percent of the vote is in.

In 2020, the Republicans won early in-person in Clark by 2,500 to 4,000 ballots every day of the second week except for the last when the Dems surged. The mail countered those and that was also in the bygone days of big Clark Dem firewalls (it's only 6,200).

Three days of early voting left, six days until the election.

Bottom line: Still not enough Clark mail ballots to offset GOP in-person votes and rural tidal wave.

GOP statewide lead now: 42,800, or 5.6 percent

Clark GOP in-person win was lowest so far, only 9 points. But only 9,000 Clark mail ballots counted, which helped Dems gain 2,200, more than offset by Clark in-person. There are more Clark in-person votes (274,000) than Clark mail ballots (260,000). It seems impossible that will last. And those rural margins!

Pretty soon the ghost of Harry Reid is going to start haunting post offices…

I'll do a more detailed post in the AM, but we are closing in on 60 percent of the vote being in (774,000) – and maybe already there. If the Dems are not doing well with the 200,000 indies who have voted (and they keep gaining in vote share)and the 200,000 more likley to vote, and if the low volume of Clark ballots does not change in the next week (it seemingly has to because it is only 57 percent of the 2020 overall total), the Dems will lose Nevada for the first time in 20 years.

Is it time for Dems to panic? No, no. Still time.

From what I know, both campaigns think so, too, even if Team Trump is a bit more bullish because of the early returns. We know the GOP is frontloading its votes, cannibalizing Election Day to an extent and causing this unicorn turnout pattern.

The outcome remains all about how the indies split and if Clark mail comes in big. Perhaps Louis DeJoy is hoarding Clark mail ballots in his basement?

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

NASA Image Captures Volcanic Eruption That Grounded Flights

A volcanic eruption spewing out ash and smoke, leading to flight cancellations, has been caught on camera from space.

The volcano, named Popocatépetl, is Mexico's most active volcano, and has been continuously erupting in fits and bouts since 2005.

Last week was a particularly active period for the volcano, with over 1,000 thousand minutes of tremors being detected each day, and huge plumes of ash being spewed out of the mountain.

Ash was reported falling from the skies in several communities near the volcano, and a cloud of this ash caused the Puebla International Airport to suspend flights on Friday morning, according to local news.

Inhalation of volcanic ash can cause serious respiratory issues, particularly for those with preexisting conditions, as the ash contains fine particles of silica, which can irritate the lungs and airways. Additionally, SO2 released by volcanoes can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs

"The gases and particles released by volcanic eruptions and lava flows can severely degrade air quality, posing health risks," David Kitchen, an associate professor of geology at the University of Richmond, Virginia, told Newsweek.

The OLI (Operational Land Imager) on the Landsat 8 satellite snapped an image of these emissions on Friday.

On the same day, Mexico's Centro Nacional de Prevención de Desastres (CENAPRED) announced that monitoring systems had detected "a continuous emission of water vapor, volcanic gases, and ash."

Popocatépetl is located in Central Mexico, about 45 miles southeast of Mexico City, meaning that about 30 million people live in a 45-mile radius of the volcano.

It stands at around 17,800 feet tall, making it the second-highest peak in Mexico after Pico de Orizaba.

Popocatépetl is a stratovolcano that came back to life in 1994 after 50 years of dormancy, and has been sporadically erupting ever since, with a notable uptick in activity since 2005.

The Popocatépetl "Volcanic Alert Traffic Light" has been in "Yellow Phase 2" all week, which is the middle level on a three-color alert scale, and remains as such as of October 28.

During this phase, "minor to moderate sized explosions (…)" "light to moderate ash rains in surrounding towns and some more distant cities (…)" "ejection of incandescent fragments," and "possibility of pyroclastic flows that do not reach populations" can be expected.

"Do not try to climb the volcano, as explosions occur that throw incandescent fragments, as has been seen recently.

Respect the 12-kilometer exclusion radius from the crater, being within this area is not safe.

In case of heavy rain, stay away from the bottom of the ravines, due to the danger of mud and debris flows," CENAPRED warned in a translated report.

Volcanic ash can bury crops, damage livestock health, contaminate soil, and poison water supplies, while SO2 mixes with water vapor to form sulfuric acid, contributing to acid rain, which damages vegetation, soils, and water bodies.

Some of this volcanic ash was even found to have traveled hundreds of miles to the northeast, being detected near Sarasota in Florida.

Earlier this year, Trump and Haley were the final two Republican candidates seeking the party nomination, and at times the feud between them got ugly. But in the end, Trump ousted Haley for the party’s final approval.

The former South Carolina governor and UN ambassador was interviewed on "Special Report" by Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier on Tuesday, the same day Vice President Harris held an event at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., to sell her pitch to voters that Trump is a threat to democracy.

"A lot of Americans have decided where they are," Haley said, pointing out that Harris continues to go back to the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. "While she wants to go back to Jan. 6, what she doesn’t want to visit is what’s happened since Jan. 6, because we’ve had four years of record inflation. We’ve had unconscionable amounts of illegal immigrants, 500,000 criminal illegals alone coming across that border."

Haley also said Afghanistan fell under the Biden-Harris administration, unleashing a "world war" America is now dealing with.

She also spoke to Baier about who she believes is the best candidate to serve as president.

"It is clear. I mean, look, it's like what I said at the Republican National Convention. You don’t have to agree with Trump 100% of the time to vote for him," Haley said. "And so, for me, we have the choice. The choice is given. It’s either Donald Trump or it’s Kamala Harris. And for my family, what I’m looking at is the fact that my daughter says she can’t afford groceries. And I look at an economy that’s been tough for all of us."

Haley told Baier the last time she spoke to Trump was in June, and she was asked by the anchor if she was surprised that she had not been deployed to campaign for the Republican presidential nominee.

"They’re very aware that we’re on standby," she said. "They know that we would be there to help. I’ve helped with some fundraising letters and text messages and those types of things, so we’ve done that. But look, we’re on the same team. It’s their campaign’s decision on what he needs and these last final days.It does not bother me at all."(Oh sure!)

While she has not been tapped to campaign,Haley did offer advice to Trump and his campaignduring Baier’s interview, saying it has to be a time of addition…. (No thanks!)

Thousands of Pennsylvania voters received a text message this weekend that falsely claimed that they had already voted in the Nov. 5 election.

“Records show you voted,” the text read, linking them to an official Pennsylvania website with information about polling places and early voting.

But the message did not come from an official government resource or a well-known get-out-the-vote advocacy group. Instead, it was signed by “AllVote,” a self-proclaimed voter-mobilization program that election officials have repeatedly flagged as a scam to be avoided and ignored.

If “AllVote” sounds familiar, the name has been linked to other confusion-sowing text campaigns in the lead-up to the election. Montgomery County officials in August warned voters about “AllVote.com” that was texting registered voters and falsely claiming that they were not registered to vote — part of a scam to “capture personal, sensitive information from voters in an attempt to exploit them later on,” election commissioners said.

Election officials in Arizona and North Carolina raised concerns about text campaigns from an organization with the same name in recent months.

On Monday, however, a representative from AllVote insisted that it was a misunderstanding.

Charlotte Clymer, a contracted spokesperson for AllVote, sent The Inquirer an apologetic statement, describing the texts as a well-intended reminder-turned-disastrous mistake, thanks to a typo committed by staffers.

“We are mortified by this mistake and the confusion it has caused,” the organization said in the statement.

The organization would not say how many voters were sent the erroneous text.

The original message was intended to inform Pennsylvania voters that they had cast ballots in 2022 and to direct them toward a verified link to explore their voting options. But “in 2022″ was left out of the script, which led to widespread confusion, the statement said.

“In the heat of the campaign season, workers working long hours simply made a copy-editing mistake,” the statement read.

A follow-up text was sent to voters who received the initial text message, informing them of the error. But those who replied “STOP” to the initial message — or marked the sender as spam — may not have received the follow-up, and the organization acknowledged the damage done.

“We deeply apologize for this error, which we understand caused significant confusion, especially amongst voters who have not voted yet but were told they had,” the organization said, vowing to implement an additional review process on future text alerts.

Clymer described AllVote as “funded by progressive donors aiming to increase voting participation” but declined to provide details about the group’s backers. A political action committee with that name was registered this year. Yet little public information is available about AllVote, and its website lists no founder or staffers.

A glitch exists in some types of Dominion voting machines, according to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.

Voters who use a Dominion ICX Voter Assist Terminal (VAT) will experience an issue if they want to vote for candidates of both parties, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said, according to WLNS-TV.

A voter assist terminal helps people with disabilities cast their ballots.

“Yeah, this is a nationwide issue with Dominion voter access terminals in, in the counties that use them in the voter access terminals,” Benson said.

“Of course, not all the machines, just the ones that are accessible, have an issue. With the straight-party voting and a programming issue, that’s again affected the machines nationwide,” she added.

Benson said the issue emerged too late to be fixed.

“I think all of us who used Dominion machines were unhappy to learn about this during the testing period and as early voting began, so we’re working with Dominion to seek accountability on that front,” she said.

Benson said that her office, which oversees elections in Michigan is “working with our clerks to ensure voters are aware of this programming issue that will require them to ensure they are voting every section on the ballot.”

Every site in Michigan has a voter assist terminal that helps voters make their selections, according to a news release from Benson’s office.

“Because of this programming issue, voters using Dominion ICX VATs will have to select either the ‘straight party’ option if they wish to vote straight ticket or vote for each race on the partisan selection of the ballot if they wish to split their ticket,” the release said.

The release said that other states already do that but “it is not the standard in Michigan, where voters have the option to vote straight party but then override their party selection for individual races.”

The release says a ballot will not be processed if a voter using one of the affected Dominion machines votes the usual Michigan way.

“If a voter using the Dominion VAT votes straight party but then splits their ticket, the voter will receive an error message. The voter will need to go back and de-select their straight-party selection and vote for candidates in the races individually or vote straight party without splitting their ticket,” the release said.

The release said the issue will be addressed in the future.

“Although the issue will not stop people from voting or making their preferred selections, and it will not change anyone’s votes, it will make the process more inconvenient for some voters using the VATs,” the release said.

Five Eyes developing ‘secret cloud’ – media

The technology would reportedly allow intelligence agencies from the US, Canada, Britain, New Zealand and Australia to share data

The Five Eyes intelligence group is reportedly considering the creation of a top-secret cloud environment that would allow its members to more easily share data, the outlet Breaking Defense reported on Tuesday.

Officials from all of the group’s member countries, which include the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, reportedly agreed at a recent Department of Defense Intelligence Information System conference (DODIIS) that such technology would “turn information technology interoperability into a reality,” the outlet said.

It is also envisioned that the information stored on the cloud could be “tagged” with metadata that would help identify where the intelligence came from, according to Brig. Gen. Eric Vandenberg, who heads the general intelligence enterprise for the Canadian Department of National Defense.

“Not only would this cloud be a Top Secret cloud, but it would be classification agnostic as well, because the data is all tagged, because all of my users all have the correct digital identities, I can store all the data in the cloud. Everyone can access what they’re allowed to access when they’re allowed to access it. It would enable interoperability,” Vandenberg told an audience at the DODIIS conference this week.

Jack Maxton, the chief information officer for defense intelligence at the British Ministry of Defense has also expressed hope for the creation of such a network and also called for cutting down on “unnecessary bureaucracy” within the intel sharing group.

“[Bureaucratic restrictions] are adding very little value, either to our security or to our intelligence mission, but because they’ve been there for so long, we’ve just got really, really comfortable,” Maxton said.

However, Breaking Defense cited Brig. Andrew McBaron, director general of intelligence data and targeting for the Australian Department of Defense, as saying that the creation of such a cloud is still only being considered and is an “ambitious” aspirational goal for the time being. No Five Eyes officials have suggested when such a network could be launched; nevertheless, they reportedly believe that it would “transform” how member agencies work together.

SBX2 11 is a California Senate Bill passed in 2009. The bill was signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on February 20, 2009. The bill reinstated certain supplemental benefits for judges and gave them retroactive immunity for accepting compensation from the county of Los Angeles, which the Constitution clearly states shall be set by the legislature. He wrote Judicial Accountability Initiative Law in 1995 after he brought a lawsuit in 1994 against the county and seven police officers for false arrest, false imprisonment and unwarranted strip-search, as well as other charges; and when the City of Los Angeles defaulted, no judgment came, although the Constitution mandates one be rendered within ninety days of default. NASA's astronauts should evacuate the International Space Station (ISS) immediately to avoid a fatal disaster, a space expert has warned.

Nick Pope, a former civil servant who once ran the British Government's UFO project, told MailOnline that the space agency's 'wait-and-see' attitude could have devastating consequences.

'Leaving it too late could lead to a disaster that would kill not only the astronauts, but also NASA's reputation,' he said.

His warning comes as NASA revealed it is tracking 50 'areas of concern' related to a growing leak on the Russian side of the ISS.

American astronauts have been instructed to wait near the escape hatch in case of an emergency evacuation whenever the hatch to the leaky section is open.

NASA has now promoted the leak to a 'top safety risk'.

However, it insists that its astronauts will remain aboard the station.

But as NASA and its Russian counterpart, Roscomos, fail to patch or even find the leak there are now growing concerns over the safety of the ISS.

The leak was first detected in 2019 in the Russian Zvezda Service Module Transfer Tunnel which provides station living quarters, life support systems, electrical power distribution and data processing, flight control and propulsion systems.

However, despite the space agencies covering potential cracks with 'a combination of sealant and patches' the leak has only grown faster in recent years.

In February, NASA was forced to hold a press conference on the issue as the amount of air escaping temporarily increased from 0.2 lbs per day (0.09 kg) to 2.4 lbs (1.08 kg) per day.

The leak then hit record rates in April, losing 3.7 lbs (1.68 kg) of air every day according to a report from NASA's Office of the Inspector General (OIG).

As the leak continues to grow, the situation was declared a 'top safety risk' this September and escalated to the highest level on NASA's risk scale.

NASA officials say they have reached a deal with Roscomos to only open the hatch to the leaking section when necessary and to keep it sealed during the evenings.

Whenever the hatch is open, NASA has instructed all astronauts to remain on the American side of the station so they can be nearer to their spacecraft in case of an emergency.

However, Mr Pope says that this has put NASA in a 'tight spot'.

He says: 'Evacuating the ISS too soon will increase the gap between NASA and Elon Musk and make NASA look like a declining force, but leaving it too late could lead to a disaster.'

While NASA maintains that the Zvezda module's hatch remains closed as much as possible, if the leaks become severe the station could rapidly lose pressure and oxygen.

In the case of such an emergency, all astronauts would need to climb aboard their assigned 'lifeboats' docked with the station.

The capsules have been stocked with emergency suits, allowing the crew to quickly put on the proper gear as they flee the orbiting laboratory, saving more valuable time.

NASA's Commercial Crew Program Manager Steve Stich said that in the event of an emergency, SpaceX's Dragon could be powered up within minutes.

However, the space agency has also admitted that the ISS is not sufficiently prepared for capsule failures which could leave some astronauts stranded.

The OIG report says: 'Due to the high costs and a limited budget, the lack of ready-to-launch vehicles prevent the Agency from having an immediate response capability if crew vehicles encounter significant damage and are no longer safe for crew evacuation.'

In the event of an impact from a micrometeor or piece of space debris, this could lead to a situation in which astronauts have no way of fleeing the damaged station.

However, due to the costs of performing upgrades in space, NASA has said it will not provide any additional shielding to protect the station from objects larger than 3cm.

Mr Pope adds: 'Space is inherently dangerous and the space program carries with it a degree of risk. But with lives at stake, a wait-and-see option has higher consequences.'

However, not all experts are convinced that the Zvezda module leak is likely to lead to catastrophic failure.

Dr Simeon Barber, a space scientist at The Open University, told MailOnline: 'Although this is seen as a high priority issue to resolve, it is not putting astronauts in immediate danger.'

By closing the hatch to Zvezda, the leak can be contained no matter how fast it becomes.

'The problem is that if the leak gets too bad, they might have to leave the hatch permanently closed, meaning the docking ports beyond the hatch can’t be used,' says Dr Barber.

Although this would make resupplying the space station more difficult it would ensure that the station can continue functioning.

While this might not be a threat to human life, experts say that this could lead NASA to decommission the station earlier than planned.

The ISS has already remained in orbit for 10 years longer than originally intended and its ageing systems are showing serious signs of wear.

If the Zvezda module had to be sealed, the loss of air would mean the station would need to be resupplied more frequently just as doing so became more difficult.

Independent spaceflight safety expert Laura Forczyk told MailOnline: 'If the leaks on the ISS worsen significantly to the point where NASA and Russia conclude the situation is unsafe, it may mean decommissioning the ISS sooner than expected.'

NASA currently maintains that the station remains safe and says it is working with Roscomos to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

A NASA spokesperson told MailOnline: 'NASA and Roscosmos continue to evaluate onboard and ground test data with the primary goal of identifying the root cause, gaining a better understanding of the risk to station operations, and implementing repairs.'

Former President Donald Trump's campaign will sue Bucks County for turning away voters who had lined up to apply for mail ballots on demand, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley said.

Pennsylvania law does not allow early voting, and Bucks County officials insist election offices are not polling places and on-demand printing of mail ballots is not early voting.

In some locations, people reported being sent away because of the long lines well before the 5 p.m. ET deadline to request ballots, The Bucks County Courier Times reported. County officials said on X that anyone in line to apply for a ballot by 5 p.m. Tuesday was able to submit their application.

Speaking Tuesday night at a Trump rally in Allentown, Pennsylvania, 2½ hours after the state deadline to accept mail ballot applications, Whatley told voters to stay in line.

"Donald Trump needs your votes, Donald Trump needs Pennsylvania, and America needs Pennsylvania," Whatley said at about 7:30 p.m. ET, The Pennsylvania Capital-Star reported.

"Folks, here's what's happening: Democrat election officials are seeing our numbers. They're seeing our turnout. They are seeing us breaking early vote records across Pennsylvania. They are terrified. And they want to stop our momentum. We are not going to let them suppress our votes. We are going to fight."

He then added "the Trump-Vance campaign has just filed a huge lawsuit against Bucks County," though, at the time, the courts were closed for the evening.

The Pennsylvania Capital-Star said unclear direction from state election officials created confusion among members of both major political parties about the difference between on-demand mail ballots and early voting.

The process of getting a mail ballot on demand required voters submit mail ballot applications. Each voter then receives a ballot on the same day and can fill out the ballot and turn it in on the spot. Or, they can take the ballot home and return it another day before Election Day, The Pennsylvania Capital-Star.

KFOX14 reported Tuesday that in Delaware County, a Trump supporter was seen handcuffed by police at a Pennsylvania voting center.

Valerie Biancaniello took to X posted video showing a group of uniformed officers taking her into custody.

"I was just taken away in handcuffs at the Delaware County, PA Government Center for encouraging people to stay in line and vote," Biancaniello posted Monday afternoon.

National Security Space Association’s Plan For the Next President

The next president must boost US capabilities in space to keep pace with China—and Congress should step up and foot the bill, according to a collection of papers released yesterday by a think tank within the National Security Space Association.

The papers—a follow-on to four papers released in August—are intended to be a blueprint for the incoming administration to win the space race with Russia and China.

They offer an argument for increasing America’s defense posture in space, as well as a detailed plan to ensure the nation doesn’t lose its technological edge.

Winning the race: “The United States lacks a comprehensive long-term strategy to protect our interests against Chinese aggression in, from, and to space,” Gregory Pejic, an NSSA board member and the former deputy assistant secretary of defense for space policy, wrote in the paper.

The next US president must conduct a review of the country’s space posture, issue a new National Security Space Strategy, and refocus the DoD and intelligence community to make this vision a reality, according to Pejic’s recommendations.

He argued the proposed national space posture review should take the widest possible scope.

The president should review all national security space operations within the DoD and intelligence communities.

The review should cover all traditional space missions, offensive and defensive capabilities, enabling capabilities (for example, launch, command and control), and data analytics services.

It should focus on the full gamut of space operations: in orbit, cislunar space, and supporting ground systems.

Lastly, it should be augmented by independent, long-term analysis of trends and risks regarding the US military’s capabilities compared to China’s.

Paying for it: Crucially, the think tank pointed out that US space dominance can only be accomplished by closing budget gaps.

“Adversarial advancements, particularly from China and Russia, have pushed the service’s requirements far beyond its existing budgetary framework,” according to Mike Tierney, NSSA’s head of legislative affairs.

Tierney recommended that the next administration nearly double the Space Force’s annual budget to $45-50B to provide for adequate

missile warning and tracking systems to counter ballistic and hypersonic missile threats from Russia and China. The Space Force’s request for $1.2B for these systems has gone unfunded.

Trash Crisis Leaves Puerto Rico Near ‘the Brink’

Most of Puerto Rico’s landfills fail to meet federal standards and are almost full. Residents and experts worry that trash will soon overwhelm the region.

Because Puerto Rico is a cluster of islands, the trash has nowhere to go, says Carl Soderberg, executive director of the Puerto Rico chapter of the Inter-American Association of Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences.

“We’re one step away from the brink,” he says.

Twenty-nine landfills are spread throughout the region. Eighteen do not meet federal standards because, among other violations, they function as “open dumps.”

The landfills are already so full that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency predicts that they will outstrip their capacity by 2023.

Puerto Rico recycles only 9% to 14% of its trash, although at least 35% of its solid waste is recyclable. In 2017, the trash crisis worsened when hurricanes Maria and Irma left at least 2.5 million tons of debris.

The landfill that bedevils Contorno residents opened in 1966. Two potable water wells and 14 subterranean water wells lie within 2 miles of the landfill. They feed into the Río de la Plata valley, an important potable water aquifer.

The dump sits on 31 acres, and it became such a menace that Contorno residents formed Toalteños por el ambiente (Toa Alta Residents for the Environment) to oppose it. They wrote the municipal legislature and the Environmental Quality Board (now part of Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources) to complain about the stench. They were also angry that when it rained, torrents of trash flowed from the dump.

González says that before Environmental Quality Board officials paid visits, residents always warned landfill managers. But they covered the trash with soil after leaving it in the open for weeks, a violation of EPA standards.

A prominent transgender activist stole nearly $100,000 from a bail fund she operated, using the money to pay for her closet renovations and her Mercedes, prosecutors in Brooklyn allege.

Dominique Morgan, 43, of Atlanta, was already making $200,000 a year as the executive directorof the Brooklyn-based Okra Project when she stole $99,000 during a roughly two-week period in July 2022, prosecutors allege.

Morgan announced that Okra, whichoffers mutual aid and other resources to the Black trans community nationwide, would start bailing people out, but didn’t take any steps to create an official initiative, prosecutors charge.

She transferred the money into her personal account, ostensibly to bail out indigent criminal defendants, but instead spent it on a $19,000 California Closets renovation, car payments for a Mercedes-Benz, purchases at clothing stores, meals and other personal expenses, according to prosecutors.

When Okra asked her for proof she was using the money for bail, she cooked up bogus receipts for 23 people who were supposedly arrested in Fulton County, Ga., and Douglas County, Neb., prosecutors allege. But an audit showed none of those people had been arrested in either county at the time, prosecutors said.

Morgan was indicted Tuesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court on one count of grand larceny and 23 counts of falsifying business records. She pleaded not guilty, and Justice Danny Chun ordered her released without bail.

She did not respond to questions outside the courtroom, and her lawyer Jonathan Fink declined to comment.

She could face five to 15 years behind bars if convicted of the top count.

“The theft of nonprofit funds deprives communities of critical resources, erodes public trust, and cheats donors who give in good faith,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “The defendant in this case allegedly stole bail funds meant to secure pretrial release of indigent defendants, instead using the money for personal benefit.”

Many have tried to forget past missteps, hoping to forge a path of newness without addressing old wounds,” she wrote. “But in the words of George Santayana, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ And in recent years, we’ve been stuck on repeat.”

In a statement Tuesday, Souza said “The Okra Project terminated Ms. Morgan’s employment after financial discrepancies were uncovered. This incident prompted The Okra Project to contact the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, which launched its own investigation into the matter.”

Morgan is also the former executive director of Black and Pink, a national prison abolition organization that supports currently and formerly incarcerated individuals who are LGBTQ and/or living with HIV/AIDS.

After leaving Okra, she became the director of the Fund for Trans Generations at Borealis Philanthropy.

Borealis representatives did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

U.S. Government Calls for End of Disposing Solid Waste at Puerto Rico Municipal Landfill

NEW YORK – The U.S. Department of Justice today filed a complaint on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the District of Puerto Rico that calls for the municipality of Toa Alta to stop disposing of solid waste at its landfill and take steps to address public health and environmental threats posed by dangerous conditions at the landfill, which is being operated in violation of federal and commonwealth solid waste laws.

“The Toa Alta landfill poses a significant threat to the health of nearby communities and the local groundwater aquifer, and the municipality should stop disposing of waste there immediately,” said EPA acting Regional Administrator Walter Mugdan. “The many problems at the landfill are well documented and the municipality must take steps to correct them to better safeguard local communities and the environment.”

The complaint also asks the court to order the municipality of Toa Alta to pay civil penalties for its violations of a 2017 EPA order that addressed problems at the landfill.

A Nevada lake developed eerie green swirls visible from space. Here’s why

Pyramid Lake in northwest Nevada, just over the California border, took on the appearance of a spooky witch’s brew several weeks before Halloween, with striking swirls of green that were visible from space.

The colorful bands in the popular 125,000-acre lake, about 35 miles northeast of Reno within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation, came courtesy of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae.

“It looks like split pea soup, where it’s that army-green color,” said Aaron Bill, water quality program manager with the tribe’s natural resources department, describing the water’s unusual appearance.

Also on the rise in California in recent years, cyanobacteria can produce toxins that pose serious health risks to people and animals — including the thousands of recreation-goers and their pets who visit Pyramid Lake each year.

“We always want to make sure to make people aware of that, so that they would either not bring their animals out or they would restrict them and have their own safe drinking water,” Bill said.

Pyramid Lake experiences cyanobacteria blooms almost every year in the summer or fall.

The bloom this October brought some of the most cyanobacteria activity in years.

But storms in mid-October “led to a lot of wave action, and that did a good job of breaking up the material, getting it to settle down to the lake bottom,” Bill said. “It’s almost normal conditions right now.”

University of Washington tries to weather a storm of setbacks for misinformation

It’s election season, and as falsehoods rain down like a monsoon, the “rapid research” team of academics at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public has been scrambling to analyze it all.

They’ve tracked the claim that hundreds of illegal voters in Washington state were registered at a single address. (It turned out to be a homeless services organization.) They cataloged the assertions that thousands of people in the U.S. illegally were being allowed to vote in Arizona. (The vast majoritywere likelycitizens.) They followed the conspiracy theories that Democrats altered the path of Hurricane Helene to suppress conservative votes in Florida. (Democrats did not.)

Their mission isn’t to check facts. Instead, their goal is to understand how algorithms and influencers can spread claims rapidly throughout the globe, with careful attention to how a speck of truth can be misinterpreted and manipulated into a wild falsehood. Then, the thinking goes, they can educate the public to become better at parsing fact from fiction.

But in the years since 2020, said the center’s co-founder, Kate Starbird, that mission has become a lot harder.

As social media sites have cut off low-cost data access to researchers, the vast panoramic view researchers had into the millions of posts on major social media networks shrank to a small porthole.

“We are doing our best to continue the research that we’ve been doing since 2013 on crisis events in an environment where it’s harder to get the data,” Starbird said, “and in some cases where the platform owners are hostile to researchers working on their platform.”

Twitter, the site Starbird spent nearly 15 years studying, was purchased by billionaire Elon Musk — a fervent supporter of former President Donald Trump — who rebranded it X and used it to personally spread falsehoods about FEMA’s response to Hurricane Helene and false conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.

Now even trying to elaborate on how she believes X has become more “toxic” feels like a minefield.

“I’m literally afraid to make a statement on the record, because of the way that it could be used to attack me and my team,” Starbird said.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that there are powerful figures who have been rooting for these researchers to fail. Trump has made an exhaustively disproven lie — that the 2020 election was stolen from him — a core part of his campaign message, and researchers have become conservative targets. Starbird has been sued. She’s been badgered by internet trolls. She’s been grilled in a Republican congressional committee.

Meanwhile, losing data access meant losing the ability to make sweeping evidence-supported assertions about how the platform had become more toxic.

“I can’t measure it!” she said with a frustrated half-laugh. “I can’t say there’s more of this than that.”

The university’s researchers have adapted. As the internet has fragmented, they’re partnering with third-party companies to overcome the data access issues and study a broader array of networks.

Yet even they can feel disillusionment creep in: Have “large swaths of the public changed what they think about whether we can have a shared reality?” Starbird asks herself.

Or have people always been like this, and now she simply sees the truth?

The Elon factor

The researchers at the Stanford Internet Observatory — a similar coalition of misinformation researchers who partnered with UW — have also been reeling from the loss of data access.

“Has the golden age of quantitative social science on social media passed?” Alex Stamos, founder of the observatory, asked Starbird on a podcast in April. “Do we have to just accept that there’s going to be diminished answers in the future of what’s going on in these platforms?”

As if providing an answer to his questions, three months later Stanford effectively shut down the observatory.

Amid all the political pressure, the result wasn’t surprising, wrote Renée DiResta,CIAa former research director for the Stanford Internet Observatory, in a June op-ed in the New York Times.

“Misleading media claims have put students in the position of facing retribution for an academic research project,” DiResta wrote. “Even technology companies no longer appear to be acting together to disrupt election influence operations by foreign countries on their platforms.”

NASA to resume ISS spacewalks in 2025 after spacesuit leak

NASA plans to resume spacewalks on the space station in 2025 after a leaky spacesuit suspended those activities in June.

"We are planning our next set … early next year," Bill Spetch, operations and integration manager of NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) program, said of spacewalks during a press conference Oct. 25 following the conclusion of SpaceX's Crew-8 mission to the orbiting complex.

A seal and umbilical connecting the spacesuit to the ISS was replaced, and the affected suit repressurized with success, he added.

"It's just a matter of when is the right timing," Spetch said, noting that spacewalks are scheduled in between spacecraft arrivals and departures, as well as astronaut research activities.

NASA suspended all ISS spacewalks with its spacesuit indefinitely after agency astronaut Tracy Dyson experienced a brief coolant leak June 24 before leaving the hatch of the space station.

(Russia, the other majority space station partner, uses an independent set of spacesuits known as Orlan.)

Dyson and fellow NASA astronaut Mike Barratt opened the door for what was expected to be a 6.5-hour spacewalk focused on maintenance. Minutes later, however, ice particles erupted from a spacesuit connection to the ISS.

The astronauts were never in any danger, NASA has said, nor were the spacewalk tasks needed immediately.

"We'll go look for the next opportunity for where we want to do the spacewalk.

It's not time-critical or urgent, and so we'll find the best, logical place to put it," station program manager Dana Weigel, of NASA, told reporters in a teleconference on July 17.

Dyson's suit was one of NASA's extravehicular mobility units (EMU) first designed in the 1970s and used during the space shuttle program in the 1980s.

The suit has a long flight heritage, including helping to build the ISS and service the Hubble Space Telescope.

Parts of the EMU can be swapped out as needed, but the suit design nevertheless has had a few coolant leaks in recent years.

For example, NASA suspended spacewalks for seven months in March 2022 after water was discovered in a spacesuit helmet.

A more notable incident in July 2013 saw Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano's helmet fill with water while he was spacewalking, necessitating an investigation and remedies.

NASA is asking private industry to contribute new spacesuits for several programs, including low Earth orbit activities.

The EMU is biased toward larger and male sizes given that it was designed half a century ago, when male astronauts (drawn from the male-dominated military) made up NASA's corps.

Collins Aerospace was expected to deliver newer ISS suits, but withdrew from its contract in June because its anticipated timeline "would not support the space station's schedule and NASA's mission objectives."

At that time, NASA confirmed the contract would end, but did not announce its next steps.

In October 2024, WHO and partners, in collaboration with Member States, activated the Global Health Emergency Corps (GHEC) for the first time to provide support to countries facing mpox outbreaks.

GHEC is a grouping of professionals with the objective of strengthening the response to health emergencies, and a collaboration platform for countries and health emergency networks. It supports countries on their health emergency workforce, the surge deployment of experts and the networking of technical leaders. GHEC was established by WHO in 2023 after the response to the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the need to streamline efforts of existing networks to ensure better-coordinated support to countries.

“WHO and partners are supporting the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other countries to implement an integrated approach to case detection, contact tracing, targeted vaccination, clinical and home care, infection prevention and control, community engagement and mobilization, and specialized logistical support,” said Dr Mike Ryan, Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme. “The GHEC enhances the ability of the many effective responders at national and regional levels to collaborate and ensure the success on the ground in interrupting transmission and reducing suffering.”

The first activation of this new support mechanism follows the declaration of mpox as a public health emergency of international concern by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on 14 August 2024. Eighteen African countries have reported mpox cases this year, and the rapid spread of clade 1b mpox to at least two other regions has raised concerns about further spread.

In collaboration with the International Association of National Public Health Institutes, GHEC is assessing the emergency workforce capacities in 8 countries affected by the mpox outbreak, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi, the two most affected countries. The assessment has so far identified 22 areas that need strengthening, including epidemiology and surveillance, laboratory capacities, infection prevention and control, risk communication and community engagement. Dispute over mask mandate at Island County ballot inspections escalates

ISLAND COUNTY, Wash. — A republican election observer in Island County was recently kicked out of the elections office for not wearing a mask, but county elections officials told KOMO News there is more to the story.

The incident happened Monday morning when observer Tracy Abuhl visited the office to observe the ballot inspection process. A video posted on social media by Rep. Jim Walsh shows what happened next. Abuhl was escorted out of the building by law enforcement.

But Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider told KOMO News' Paul Rivera that masks are only required in certain portions of the building. On Tuesday, Crider said the requirement is to keep staff and others visiting the building from getting sick.

Crider said in the August primary, 50% of the staff got COVID-19. With the election one week away, Crider said they could not function if they lost 50% of their staff again. She added that masks and gloves can also help protect workers from anything found on ballots or in envelopes.

Crider says Abuhl was not stopped from watching operations, she just was not allowed to watch it from a specific location. According to Crider, Abuhl was made aware of this policy days before the incident.

Island County Elections Supervisor Michele Reagan spoke to Rivera inside the elections office and showed him the location where Abuhl could watch the ballot inspections if she did not want to wear a mask. Reagan explained that votes are not yet being counted, but other steps in the process are being completed.

The ‘unmasked’ area gives observers a view of all the employees in the room. To enter the room, just a few feet away, you are required to wear a mask. Reagan said Abuhl chose to enter the room anyway and try to stay there without wearing a mask.

Crider said Abuhl made a statement to the effect of, “Well, you’ll have to remove me.” It was at this point that law enforcement escorted her out of the building. Washington GOP Chairman and State Representative Jim Walsh disagrees with the premise entirely.

“The staff asked her to leave because she would not wear a COVID-19 mask. The staff of the auditor of Island County cites a section of the Washington administrative code that grants the county auditors fairly wide discretion over making the rules for who can watch and observe ballot processing and ballot counting. This runs into conflict with higher levels of law, including actual state law,” Walsh said. “We believe with a first amendment right that our observer has to observe the election.”

Walsh said it is their opinion that the auditor’s policy is not stronger than state law. “I believe it’s the observer’s position that the secondary location where they’re telling her she can observe is not a clear line of sight for the process,” Walsh added.

Rivera said that he stood where the observer was told to stand, and the staff was visible. He asked Walsh what exactly the observer needed to see that couldn’t be seen from the ‘unmasked location.’

Walsh responded, “It is her position, it is not a clear line of sight,” he added, “I guess that is a somewhat subjective standard, she feels strongly that the location that was offered to her was inferior.” Regardless of the arguments, Walsh feels that this shouldn't have happened because the mandate shouldn’t be there in the first place.

“Washington Administrative Code, the bureaucratic rules allow a county auditor to set the basic policies and rules of election observer. That’s fine, but there is no specific allowance for requiring COVID-19 masks at a time when there is no widespread outbreak,” he said.

A Cease and Desist letter sent by Dr. James Peterson to Reagan on Tuesday morning also makes a similar argument.

Chinese astronauts Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze will carry out the Shenzhou-19 crewed spaceflight mission, with Cai serving as the commander, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced at a press conference on Tuesday.

The Shenzhou-19 spaceship is scheduled to be launched at 4:27 a.m. on Wednesday from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, the CMSA said.

On Tuesday, the three Shenzhou-19 taikonauts also met the press at the launch center.

Cai completed the Shenzhou-14 space mission in 2022, while 1990-born Song and Wang, part of the third batch of Chinese astronauts, are newcomers to space.

Cai Xuzhe

Born in 1976, Cai joined the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force in 1995 and was selected to be a member of the second batch of Chinese astronauts in 2010.

During his last and also the first mission to space, Cai experienced the 'busiest' six months.

He had witnessed the completion of the basic structure of the station and accomplished a number of "firsts," including the first in-orbit crew turnover with the Shenzhou-15 crew members.

"It is because of the support from our country and its people that we have the opportunity to visit the space again and again," said Cai at the press conference.

Cai received a third-class medal and the honorary title "heroic astronaut" in March 2023.

Song Lingdong

Born in August 1990, pilot-turned-taikonaut Song has had the dream of traveling to space since he was little.

"Twenty-one years ago, at the age of 13, my classmates and I sat in front of the television, watching the successful launch of Shenzhou-5.

Filled with awe, the seed of the dream to fly to space was sown," Song told the press.

Song recognized that his taking part in the Shenzhou-19 mission has been made possible "by the strength of his homeland, the continuous efforts of generations of space pioneers, and the greatness of this new era."

"I will carry the 'flying' baton well, showcasing the spirit of my generation and writing the glory of the nation across the cosmos."

He was selected to be a member of China's third batch of astronauts in September 2020.

Wang Haoze

Born in March 1990, Wang is currently China's only female flight engineer and will become the third Chinese woman to embark on a crewed spaceflight mission.

Before being selected as a member of China's third batch of astronauts, Wang used to work at the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation as a senior engineer.

From designing rockets to riding one, Wang said that she's deeply grateful for all the people working in the space technology sector.

"I want to fly around in our 'space mansion' and experience the joy of weightlessness. I want to diligently complete every task and protect our 'space home.'

I also wish to roam through the depths of space and wave to the stars. Above all, I want to catch a glimpse of my motherland that nurtured me," Wang told the press.

Together, the crew will conduct 86 space science research and technological experiments.

Several scientific achievements are anticipated in areas such as frontier research in fundamental theories, new material preparation, mechanisms of space radiation, and the physiological effects of microgravity, as well as the biological effects of a hypomagnetic field and molecular mechanisms.

The legal record is also clear that a president can pardon for a presumptive crime, like what then-President Gerald Ford did with his predecessor Richard Nixon on Sept. 8, 1974. In the aftermath of Watergate, Ford gave Nixon, who resigned from the presidency a month earlier, an “absolute pardon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from Jan. 20, 1969 through Aug. 9, 1974.”

The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the presidential power to pardon in ex parte Garland, an 1866 case involving a former Confederate senator who had been pardoned by President Andrew Johnson. In that case, the high court made clear that the pardon power “extends to every offense known to the law, and may be exercised at any time after its commission, either before legal proceedings are taken or during their pendency, or after conviction and judgment.”
