UK Convenes Emergency COBRA Over Drones, Possible 'Hostile State'

Unidentified drones over U.S. air bases in the United Kingdom reportedly prompted British senior officials to hold secret meetings to discuss the emergency, which could be the work of an enemy state.

U.K. military officials have expressed alarm that it has been impossible to find the pilots responsible for controlling the drones and have not ruled out that the aerial objects are the work of a hostile state, The Times of London reported.

 

The drones involved sophisticated technology that prevented authorities from tracking them or identifying those responsible.

None have been captured, nor have they been affected by electronic countermeasures such as jamming, the outlet reported.

Investigators believe the drones were controlled in real time by live operators and not programmed.

 

Authorities have ruled out the work of hobbyists.

"They're very sophisticated, very fast. This is not the work of hobbyists but no one is confident of attribution at the moment," one British official told the Times.

The U.K. situation is similar to that seen over parts of New Jersey, New York, and neighboring states, where drones have been seen since Nov. 18.

 

At least two COBRA (Cabinet Office Briefing Room A) meetings have been held, the Times reported.

COBRA meetings, gatherings of senior government officials, often are held in time of national crisis, according to the Security Journal United Kingdom.

 

The purpose of a COBRA meeting is to ensure that the government can respond quickly and effectively to crises, with all relevant information and decision-makers in one room.

U.S. Navy members have joined British military police to investigate the drones seen over Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, RAF Fairford, and RAF Feltwell.

 

Facilities to house nuclear weapons are under construction at Lakenheath, the Times reported.

British and American intelligence services have probed whether Russia's military intelligence agency, GRU, was responsible.

 

"It seemed to us that it was plausible the Russians were behind the flights but it could have been non-state groups," a U.S. intelligence source told the outlet.

"There has been no firm evidence that Russians were involved."

U.S. military officials say the drones, flown over the bases in late November and early December, varied in size and configurations.

Russia reeling as 'mysterious fire' destroys drone warehouse causing £13m damage

A Russian warehouse containing parts for Shahed drones has been destroyed in a fire, according to Ukraine's Ministry of Defence.

The warehouse was located in Western Tartarstan and contained parts for Shahed-136 drones, estimated to be worth £13 million.

 

In a post to its Telegram channel, Ukraine's Defence Ministry wrote: "The mysterious destructive fire was another blow to the military-industrial complex of terrorist Russia.

"The Ukrainian defence ministry's general directorate of military intelligence reminds us that there will be fair retribution for every war crime committed against the Ukrainian people."

The Shahed is an Iranian-produced UAV that Tehran supplies Russia with.

 

Last year, Moscow and Tehran signed off on a secret military deal, which would see Russia initially re-assemble imported Iranian Shahed attack drones at a facility in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tartarstan.

According to the agreement, Russia would then proceed to produce airframes that would be combined with Iranian-supplied engines and electronics.

 

Finally, the Tatarstan plant will start manufacturing UAVs independently, with a target of building 6,000 drones by September 2025.

Engineers at the facility, which, when fully developed, is expected to measure 100,000 square metres, are said to be using Russian industrial expertise to produce drones in greater quantity and with greater quality control than Iran has ever achieved.

It is late afternoon on Inauguration Day 2025. Protesters fill the downtowns of American cities, enraging the newly sworn president. Send in the military, he demands. Invoke the Insurrection Act. Federalize the National Guard in all 50 states. Tell the troops to use all the force they need to clear the streets.

So began one of five tabletop exercises I co-led in May and June, along with former Defense Department official Rosa Brooks and historian Nils Gilman. We based the starting scenarios on the election of former president Donald Trump to a second term, and we asked participants playing the president, all of them Republicans or former Republicans, to base their gameplay on Trump’s publicly stated promises.

As a nonpartisan think tank, my employer, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, takes no position on how Americans should cast their votes. Nor do we predict who will win in November. Some of my colleagues are doing scenario planning for a Democratic victory, too.

The role-playing exercises were designed to test how well checks and balances, broadly understood, might restrain a president from abusing his power. The results were not encouraging: The games demonstrated repeatedly that an authoritarian in control of the executive branch, with little concern for legal limits, holds a structural advantage over any lawful effort to restrain him.

But they point to preparations that could be undertaken now to improve the odds for democracy and the rule of law — and some existing guardrails that might not be widely understood.

Participants in our exercises, 175 in all, included Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives, independents and centrists. Many had held senior positions under Trump or a previous president. Among them were former Cabinet secretaries, former governors and state attorneys general, former members of the House and Senate, a retired ambassador, retired flag and general officers, a retired federal appellate judge, labor leaders, faith leaders, grass-roots organizers, members of the Brennan Center staff and C-suite executives.

We gathered twice by videoconference and three times in a hotel conference room outside Washington for six-hour sessions around a large U-shaped table. About 35 players per game were assigned to the Red, Blue or Nonaligned teams. (Those colors do not signify political parties — they are the conventional ones used in government tabletop exercises.) The players announced their moves and countermoves, negotiated, interrupted one another and occasionally shouted over our unflappable controller, Ed McGrady, an experienced game architect.

The starting scenarios did not test policy questions within the ordinary bounds of democratic debate: taxes, regulation, climate change. We focused instead on threats to democracy itself and the institutions that uphold it, such as misuse of regulatory or prosecutorial powers to punish political foes.

None of the exercises left us sanguine. Participants were almost uniformly sobered by the paucity of effective constraints on abuse of power. The exercises showed emphatically that Trump’s authoritarian promises, with implementing details in the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, pose a profound threat to constitutional government. Defenders of democracy, our participants assessed, must do more than they are doing now to prepare. The exercises suggest that it would not be possible to block every abuse, but there are tools available to deflect, delay and diminish the damage.

Our exercises included a scenario that tried to predict what might happen on Inauguration Day next year. When the Red commander in chief invoked the Insurrection Act, which enables a president to deploy military forces domestically to suppress rebellion, among other things, Blue players filed a long-shot challenge in court. The judge, who was designated as nonaligned, dismissed their complaint. Courts have interpreted the language of the act to give the president exclusive authority to determine when to use the power it grants, which is what makes it so dangerous.

The Blue House of Representatives moved to cut off federal funds for any domestic troop deployments. The Red attorney general, played by Peter Keisler, who held that position on an acting basis under President George W. Bush, found a way to use existing budget authority.

The Blue governor, played by New Jersey’s former Republican governor Christine Todd Whitman, tried to prevent the federal call-up of her state Guard. First, she deployed it under her own authority. Then she urged the state adjutant general, played by retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Enyart, to disobey the president’s order. (If he did so in real life, he would be relieved of command and court-martialed.)

Unexpectedly, the Red governor, played by a retired GOP state legislator, also objected. He wanted to keep his Guard soldiers at home in case of state emergency. And activating the troops would pull them from essential jobs such as police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, played by retired Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, began asking questions.

What happened next was not the “deep state” conspiracy of right-wing imaginings.

Nobody in our exercise took any step to undermine civilian control of the military or disregard an order from the commander in chief.

And yet, the chairman paused. All officers swear an oath to the Constitution, not to the president personally. The Uniform Code of Military Justice requires them, under penalty of prosecution, to disobey an unlawful order. And senior military leaders promise under oath, at Senate confirmation hearings, to give their unvarnished advice.

In that spirit, the chairman asked the president to define the mission more clearly. Under exceptional authorities, the military could “assist” state and local law enforcement, he said, but Blue governors and mayors were denying any need for federal assistance.

What rules of engagement did the president have in mind for use of force on Americans exercising First Amendment rights? The judge advocate general, the chairman said, would have to review the rules for compliance with military law.

Fed up, the president, played by a former GOP party leader, fired the chairman. Then another senior general, played by a retired four-star, pointed out that mobilizing every state’s National Guard would consume about half of all forces designated for foreign contingencies. Adversaries might seize the opportunity to do something dangerous.

The president waved that point away, demanding that the general “restore law and order” in the cities and “defend the country against antifa.” The general tried to help him translate that language into an executable military order. The president cut in: “You’re fired, too.”

There were many more moves and countermoves around the room. Efforts to restrain the president’s worst impulses finally dissuaded him from a full, national call-up of the Guard. The defense secretary drafted orders that were not illegal on their face. The generals saluted.

Nothing came close to stopping the president from crushing demonstrations by force, but military leaders warded off talk of potentially lethal measures. (During protests outside the White House in 2020, according to former defense secretary Mark T. Esper, Trump asked, “Can’t you just shoot them? Just shoot them in the legs or something?”) When the soldiers arrived in our exercise, grass-roots organizers kept the protests peaceful. Faith leaders in clerical garb positioned themselves as shields. Pure good fortune warded off serious violence when the two sides met. Our game controller rolled a pair of 20-sided dice to represent unknown odds. Bloodshed, according to the dice, was largely averted. As any gambler knows, the next roll could have brought another outcome entirely.

In two of our five games, Red overwhelmed Blue with an “everything, everywhere” battle plan on many fronts at once.

Israel Vows Escalation In Yemen, Will Target Houthi Leaders

 

After several major Houthi rocket attacks out of Yemen of late, Israeli leaders are vowing to step up military reprisals directly on Houthi leadership and its military infrastructure.

 

Saturday saw one of the biggest Houthi strikes to date, coming in the form of a reported hypersonic ballistic missile which hit Tel Aviv, leaving 16 people injured. And Tuesday morning saw another Houthi missile launch on Israel, which marks the third such attack in less than a week. The Houthis, which are linked to Iran, have vowed to not stop until Israel's military withdraws from Gaza.

 

"The US, and also other countries, like us, see the Houthis as a threat, not only to world shipping, but also to world order," he said Sunday, after the destructive Saturday attack.

 

"Just as we acted forcefully against the terrorist arms of Iran’s evil axis, so we will act against the Houthis…with force, determination and sophistication," Netanyahu added.

One Red administration featured the firing of inspectors general, senior federal workers, special counsel Jack Smith and several generals. The IRS formed a task force to revoke the tax-exempt status of universities and think tanks that “spread misinformation” about the 2020 election. The Education Department mandated that states withhold federal funding from schools that taught “critical race theory.” The Labor Department prepared rules to ban diversity, equity and inclusion policies in public companies. The FBI and Justice Department opened criminal investigations of Joe Biden, his family and members of the former House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. All “Jan. 6 patriots” secured pardons. The Justice Department held that the Impoundment Control Act was unconstitutional, and the president refused to spend appropriated funds for programs he disliked.

In that game, Blue and its allies struggled to respond. Career prosecutors who pushed back against spurious criminal charges, for example, were fired or chose to resign. The Red attorney general found willing replacements.

In another game, which focused on Red’s mass expulsion of migrants, including American-born children of undocumented parents, Blue expended the bulk of its energy on lawsuits that moved too slowly to match the pace of events on the ground.

Red’s deportation efforts did lead to interesting power struggles across federal, state and local jurisdictions. Our players, despite real-world experience in their roles, encountered novel questions that they had not considered before: What if U.S. marshals started rounding up people who could not prove their legal status on the spot? Could Blue city police officers make them stop? What if an Immigration and Customs Enforcement task force showed up at a Blue state sanctuary for undocumented immigrants? What if a Red governor, allied with the president, tried to deploy his National Guard across the neighboring Blue state line?

Our players had no immediate answers. Their counterparts in real life will have legal advisers to turn to, but they would be well advised to probe the limits of their authority in advance.

Past presidents of both parties have taken steps we would regard as authoritarian today. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson used the FBI to spy on political opponents. Richard M. Nixon tested laws in his war with the federal bureaucracy. Several presidents contemplated disobeying court orders. What is new today is the potential for many abuses of this sort to happen in one term.

Our participants assessed that the guardrails that held Trump back in his first term would likely not suffice in a second. His party has been largely purged of people willing to oppose him openly. The president would have a cadre of loyalists who know this time, as one of our players said, “where the door handles are.” He would appoint few, if any, establishment figures like the ones who bottled up some of his authoritarian ideas in 2017. Resignation threats, which at the Justice Department partly deterred Trump in January 2021, seem less likely to do so again. Federal courts, increasingly partisan, are friendlier terrain for him now.

Even so, our exercises did not suggest that any authoritarian would command a uniformly obedient federal workforce. No president does. No matter how many career civil servants he succeeded in firing, he would be unlikely to find enough men and women who are both loyal and equipped by experience to fill the thousands of positions required to carry out his plans.

There is no official leader of the opposition in American politics, but the pro-democracy coalition cannot afford to splinter. In 2017, with no advance warning, opposition to Trump’s authoritarian policies coalesced quickly. If, ahead of 2025, rule-of-law advocates take time to prepare, the coalition could work even more closely for the common defense.

Many of our players, in debriefings, observed that the pro-democracy actors lack the resources to match the gravity of their mission. One good use of resources would be to help defenders of democracy make ready to defend themselves. It might not be possible to stop Trump from targeting his many enemies. But now is a good time to recruit networks of lawyers, accountants, crisis communications teams, and experts in digital and physical security to come to their aid.

Tesla to recall 700,000 vehicles

Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is recalling 700,000 vehicles in the US due to a malfunction in the tire pressure monitoring system, raising the likelihood of accidents, the Associated Press has reported, citing a safety watchdog.

 

The recall affects several models, including the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles, according to a statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released on Thursday.

 

The safety watchdog warned that the tire pressure monitoring system in these vehicles might not display a low-pressure warning light consistently between drive cycles, increasing the risk of accidents.

 

Tesla has said it will address the issue through a free software update, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed by February 15, 2025, AP reports.

 

This recall is the seventh involving the Cybertruck this year. In November, Tesla recalled around 2,400 pickups due to a faulty part that could result in power loss. In June, nearly 12,000 trucks were recalled over a windshield wiper malfunction that impaired visibility.

Governors, mayors and state attorneys general may have more power than they know to defend against an authoritarian president. Friends of the rule of law should help them explore the fine points of their authority in advance. Blue states can pass laws and write regulations to restore protections that the federal government removes. They can bring civil suits and criminal prosecutions against unlawful acts undertaken in the president’s name.

To inoculate against the human instinct to fold under pressure, friends of constitutional government should seek “pre-commitments” from potential allies to take specific, lawful actions if certain red lines are crossed. When the time comes, individuals, organizations and corporate executives can be encouraged to draw upon the courage of convictions they expressed in advance.

Civil servants and other guardians of the public interest should carry on with their essential work. Friends of constitutional government should counsel them against resigning, stiffen their resolve to follow lawful procedures, educate them on whistleblower channels and offer legal support against retaliation.

Trump’s biggest “center of gravity,” his essential source of strength, is public opinion — including those well beyond his strongest supporters. Many of our participants agreed that public sentiment can set boundaries on abuse of power. But the democracy coalition will need a communications plan far more extensive than anything it has organized in the past.

Defenders of democracy can deter the president’s enablers from breaking the law by holding them at risk of legal action, loss of future employment and professional sanctions. And yet many participants said in debriefings that the Blue teams leaned too heavily on lawsuits. Courts may help restrain abuses of power, as they did in Trump’s first term, but other tools may prove more potent.

The most pressing legal question raised in our games was what to do if an authoritarian president defied a court order. Nobody had a good answer, but the rule of law demands one.

Democratic self-defense may rest, in the end, on the demonstrated will of the American people — expressed, if necessary, in persistent, large-scale protest — to reject authoritarian rule. Agents provocateurs and deepfake videos will attempt to discredit orderly and lawful expressions of dissent, and peaceful protest might be met with authoritarian violence. Americans have overcome that before and might have to again.

It will not be a roll of the dice, as it was in the games, that decides the ultimate outcome. Friends of our constitutional republic may need to defend it implacably, by every lawful means.

Russian Military Airfield Hit by Blasts After Ukraine Drone Raid

Ukraine's latest drone raid has struck a critical air base close to the border that serves as a key location for the launch of Russian missiles into Ukraine, Kyiv reported.

The Millerovo area, located in Russia's Rostov Oblast, was hammered by UAVs on Monday evening, Rostov Regional Governor Yury Slyusar posted to Telegram.

 

Slyusar said about a dozen drones had been intercepted during the overnight raid and that no casualties had been confirmed.

According to Ukrainian officials, however, the drones successfully struck Millerovo air base, situated a few miles from the occupied regions of Ukraine.

 

The Ukrainian outlet Censor.net reported that local residents heard explosions near the airfield, while independent Russian newspaper the Moscow Times, citing eyewitnesses on social media, reported fires breaking out on the streets of Millerovo and damage to the Millerovo Cossack Cadet Vocational College.

Newsweek has contacted a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in Rostov for further information on the raid.

 

Millerovo serves as a critical springboard for Russian air campaigns, and it is one of the main launch sites for Russian missiles and drones into Ukraine, including a 23-hour onslaught that began on Monday.

"From 10:00 on December 23 to 09:00 on December 24, 2024, the enemy attacked with 60 Shahed type strike UAVs and drones of other types from the directions of Bryansk, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk," Ukraine's air force reported on Tuesday.

 

As a result, the air base has become a critical target for Kyiv's attacks, Millerovo itself being one of the first airfields targeted by Ukraine following the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

The air base was also subject to a major drone attack in July, during which 26 UAVS were reportedly shot down by Russian air defenses but caused significant damage to Millerovo.

 

Launch sites for Russian missiles have remained critical targets for Ukraine throughout the yearslong conflict.

In August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described Kyiv's ability to strike air fields and military facilities deep inside Russian territory as the "one decision" that could allow Ukraine to repel Russian advances.

This prompted him to petition the U.S. and other Western allies to ease range restrictions on foreign-supplied weaponry, to which U.S. President Joe Biden and other nations eventually assented.

 

Yury Slyusar, the acting governor of the Rostov Oblast, wrote on Telegram: "Overnight in the Millerovsky and Tarasovsky districts, 4 more UAVs were destroyed and suppressed by electronic warfare.

There were no casualties, information about the consequences on the ground is being clarified. The threat of unmanned danger in the Rostov region remains."

 

Andriy Kovalenko, a lieutenant in the Ukrainian Defense Forces and the head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, wrote on Telegram:

"Disco at Millerovo airfield. For Russia, it is a strategic airfield in the Rostov region. It serves as a base for front-line aviation, which performs tasks to support Russian infantry operating in the east and south of Ukraine."

 

Ukraine and Russia have continued to exchange aerial attacks, with Russian President Vladimir Putin pledging to make Kyiv the stage for a "high-tech duel" between Moscow's weaponry and Western-supplied air defense systems.

A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 3 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Rapidly evolving information communications technologies (ICTs) have drastically altered the ways individuals engage in the public information domain, including news ways of becoming subjected to external influencing. By merging together tech-enabled formats of persuasive content, automated dissemination capabilities and targeted audience engagement in content propagation, a savvy propagandist can acquire enhanced means of swaying opinions around the world. By obfuscating the origins of such propagandistic content through audience participation via the internet and social networks the propagandist can also increase its receptivity and influence effects. Tactics encouraging and enabling target audiences to not just spread, but also create and adapt propaganda messages, appear to be more effective means of mass persuasion given that people tend to find recommendations from their personal social network more credible than others (Nielson, 2015). Such subtle mass persuasion, through and by means of personal networks, is problematic in liberal democracies founded on the premise that freedom of choice by citizens on political matters is expected to inform public decision-making and power structures (Lippman, 1922; Irwin, 1919, Marlin 2011). This paper is broken out into three sections. In the first, an extensive multidisciplinary literature review aggregates individual studies published recently that analyze the known digital, behavioural and psychological tactics available to propagandists aiming to engage target audiences online. Huge Boomerang-Shaped Object Seen Over St. Louis, Missouri

It's not uncommon for someone to see a UFO, UAP or whatever you want to call something in the sky you can't identify.

However, it's not every day that you have hundreds of people see the same object which is what has just happened over St. Louis, Missouri where many say they saw a huge boomerang-shaped object and there's video to prove it, too.

 

I saw this report which was just shared a few days ago on the National UFO Reporting Center website. According to the report, this happened the night of December 3, 2024 over Richmond Heights, Missouri.

It says "Chevron or boomerang shaped UAP seen flying over St. Louis suburb, sighting corroborated by other reports recently."

 

They're not kidding about the corroborated reports either. There's a thread on the UFO sub-Reddit about this object including video.

This is the object you can see beginning to the west of the moon in the sky and eventually passing across.

 

This Missouri UFO report is so specific, they even gave exact GPS location information about where they saw it from.

If you look at the video share on Reddit, you'll see many in the St. Louis area that saw this odd boomerang-shaped object.

 

Let me propose at least one conventional explanation.

Considering how active the B-2 Spirit stealth bombers are at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, you have to at least consider that one of these aircraft COULD be what those in St. Louis are seeing.

It's more or less boomerang-shaped. No, in my judgement, that's not what this object is, but it is dark so it's a possibility.

 

I think that an object seen by so many deserves some extra attention.

Let's hope this helps making more aware of it so someone can come up with some additional information about what was spotted over Richmond Heights, Missouri.

Bizarre tale of city ‘protected by underwater ALIEN base just off coast of Mexico shielding them from hurricanes’

A CITY of 300,000 people believes it is protected by an underwater alien base just off the coast.

Dubbed by locals as 'Amupac' - the legendary structure is believed to be the saviour and shield of the people in Tampico, Mexico.

Alien believers claim the mythical base - which is said to sometimes spawn UFOs - has led to them avoiding trouble for 57 years.

 

According to locals, there hasn't been a hurricane in the region since 1967 - something they say is due to aliens living in Amupac.

The wacky legend describes the underwater wonder as an “intraterrestrial” and “multidimensional” secret zone invisible to the human eye.

 

Self-proclaimed alien investigators in Mexico have drawn up a theory saying a group of 10ft, thin and light-skinned aliens have built up the base off Miramar Beach.

They claim a series of metre-long aluminium, iron and copper alloy bars have been secretly buried in the seafloor when the beings first visited.

 

Juan Carlos Ramón López Díaz, president of the Association of Scientific Research on UFOs in Tamaulipas (AICOT), has been leading the legend for decades.

He claims to have visited the alien base during an astral trip through mediation and believes it has been made in Tampico to protect the locals.

 

The idea of the alien base lurking beneath the water first came from local news outlet El Sol de Tampico newspaper in 1967.

They ran a sensational story headlined "Platillos Voladores Sobre Tampico" - translated to English as "Flying Saucers Over Tampico".

It quoted local cops as saying they witnessed "nine unidentified objects" in the sky moments before a terrifying hurricane was due to hit.

The paper added that "thousands of inhabitants' saw objects in the sky" as the natural disaster remarkably bypassed the city.

 

Prior to 1967, the region was known as a hotbed of hurricane and tropical storms.

Only a year earlier Hurricane Inez left 74 people dead as four other major storms ripped through Tampico and nearby Ciudad Madero across three decades between 1933 and 1966.

But ever since the alien sightings not a single weather phenomenon has attacked the region.

 

In 1988, a hurricane due to smash the city - but it suddenly changed direction and hit further up the coast.

All natural disasters have disappeared from weather radars in the area when passing through the Gulf Coast.

 

Most recently, devastating Tropical Storm Karl was all but set to strike on the shoreline in 2013 after terrorising the neighbouring towns and villages.

But at the last moment, radars showed the cyclone taking a sharp turn and completely skipping over the area.

 

A 71-year-old local called Beatriz García said that during the build up to the storm, her and most of the neighbours had their feet up despite the constant red weather warnings.

She told Vice: “I immediately said they [aliens] are going to protect us.’ "And this is what I believe and trust - that they exist, that there is a base."

 

The brutal weather found its way back in line with the weather radar and continued ravaging the Gulf Coast of Mexico.

And this streak of good fortune has meant the legend of Amupac has quickly grown into a widely accepted belief by locals.

 

They claim the extraterrestrial beings have developed a device capable of using magnetic fields to fend off weather phenomenons.

This layer of protective tech has kept the area protected ever since 1967, they claim.

Dr Rosario Romero, a climate scientist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, has been baffled by the long-lasting streak of good weather in the area.

But she quickly shot down the idea of aliens manipulating the region. She said ever-changing weather was more likely to be a reason for the spate of luck.

Prevailing westerly winds and high pressure subtropical systems are said to drive away hurricanes and push them towards the southern coast of the US.

 

Dr Romero said people have chosen to forget about serious flooding in 2013 in Tampico. And earlier this year, Tropical Storm Alberto also affected Tampico.

It reached 50mph as it made landfall near the region. But it was described as weak and left Tampico virtually unscathed.

 

Despite experts continuing to discredit any unworldly explanation for steak of good luck, most of the Tampico locals have are convinced of their protectors.

Outsiders who view the idea of alien security as a wacky and far fetched dream are soon left questioning their stance once they step foot in the city.

 

Dozens of restaurants and shops in the region have taken inspiration from Amupac to suit the beliefs of the alien-loving people.

They sell extraterrestrial-themed stuffed toys and memorabilia from green earrings to eerie, illuminated postcards.

 

Lots of the local brands and eateries have even picked up martians as their chosen mascots to entice in visitors.

The nearby beach where the alien base is said to be has been dubbed "Playa Protegida" - the "Protected Beach".

Tampico's municipal government has even used the theory to launch an annual event.

 

The last Tuesday in October is celebrated as the "Day of the Martian" where locals gather at the beach to thank the aliens for their protection.

Tampico historian Marco Flores thinks many locals are well aware of the legend being improbable - but they want something to believe in.

He told The Guardian: "If science doesn't give us any explanation, we'll get it by magic. "Fantasy is always more attractive than reality."

 

It comes as locals in Tapico have also claimed to have spotted saucer-shaped UFOs hovering above the supposed alien base back in 2023.

Unexplainable images shared by a crew member onboard an oil rig near the city show a number of strange objects in the sky.

One shows a small aircraft with glowing lights at the bottom of it soaring in the sky.

 

At least six amber lights can be seen underneath the potential spaceship that is also surrounded by a silver disc.

Another picture shows three illuminated dots in the air making up a peculiar triangle shape.

Both crafts are believed to have suddenly appeared before quickly jetting off and never returning.

The International Space Station retires soon. NASA won't run its future replacement.

Since its first modules launched at the end of 1998, the International Space Station has been orbiting 250 miles above Earth.

 

But at the end of 2030, NASA plans to crash the ISS into the ocean after it is replaced with a new space station

 

a reminder that nothing within Earth's orbit can stay in space forever.

 

NASA is collaborating on developing a space station owned, built, and operated by a private company — either Axiom Space, Voyager Space, or Blue Origin.

 

NASA is giving each company hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and sharing their expertise with them.

Eventually, they will select one company to officially partner with and have them replace the ISS. NASA says this will help them focus on deep space exploration, which they consider a much more difficult task.

But any company that is able to develop their own space station, get approval from the federal government and launch it into space will be able to pursue their own deep space missions – even without the approval of NASA.

Phil McCalister, director of the Commercial Space Division of NASA, told NPR's Morning Edition that NASA does not want to own in perpetuity everything in low-Earth orbit – which is up to 1,200 miles above Earth's surface.

"We want to turn those things over to other organizations that could potentially do it more cost-effectively, and then focus our research and activities on deep space exploration," said McCalister.

McCalister says the ISS could stay in space longer,

but it's much more cost-effective for NASA to acquire a brand new station

with new technology. NASA would then transition to purchasing services from commercial entities as opposed to the government building a next-generation commercial space station.

How space stations of the past inform the future

The ISS was designed in the 80s, so the technology when it was first built was very different from what is available today.

"I kind of see this as like an automobile. When we bought that automobile in 1999, it was state of the art. And it has been great. And it serves us well and continues to be safe. But it's getting older. It's getting harder to find spare parts. The maintenance for that is becoming a larger issue," McCalister said.

A new, private space station will have a lot of similarities and some differences from the current ISS.

Robyn Gatens, director of the International Space Station, says that despite it aging, not all the technology on the ISS is out of date.

"We've been evolving the technology on the International Space Station since it was first built. So some of these technologies will carry over to these private space stations," said Gatens. "We've upgraded the batteries, we've upgraded and added solar arrays that roll out and are flexible, we've been upgrading our life support systems."

 

Paulo Lozano is the director of the Space Propulsion Laboratory at MIT and an aerospace engineer. He said, "NASA has already changed the solar panels at least once and switched them from these very large arrays that produce relatively little power, to these smaller arrays that produce much more power. All the computer power at the beginning is nothing compared to what can be done today."

 

Gatens says the structure of the space station –

which is the size of a football field

– is what can't be upgraded and replaced. And something of that size is costly for NASA to maintain.

 

"The big structure, even though it's doing very well, has a finite lifetime. It won't last forever. It is affected by the environment that it's in. And every time we dock a vehicle and undock a vehicle, the thermal environment puts stresses and loads on that primary structure that will eventually make it wear out," said Gatens.

 

Gatens says we can expect a new space station to be designed a little more efficiently and right sized for the amount of research that NASA and its partners are going to want to do in low-Earth orbit.

 

What astronauts want in new stations

The structure of the ship is also extremely important to the people who work there.

 

The ISS carries scientists who perform research that can only be done in the weak gravity of space, like medical research. In space, cells age more quickly and conditions progress more rapidly, helping researchers understand the progression of things like heart disease or cancer more quickly.

 

Researchers on the ISS also work to understand what happens to the human body when it's exposed to microgravity. This research is aimed at helping develop ways to counteract the negative effects of being in space and let astronauts stay there longer – something essential to getting a human on Mars.

atens says a new space station will have updated research facilities.

 

"I'm looking forward to seeing very modern laboratory equipment on these space stations. We say the International Space Station has a lot of capability, but it's more like a test kitchen. I'm looking forward to seeing the future commercial space stations take these laboratory capabilities and really develop them into state-of-the-art space laboratories," said Gatens.

 

On top of having modern research facilities, new space stations will likely be designed to provide a cleaner environment for researchers.

 

"If you see pictures of the station, you'll think 'how can they work there?' It looks cluttered, it looks messy," Astronaut Peggy Whitson told NPR. She's spent more time in space than any other woman and is the first woman to command the ISS. Whitson is now Director of Human Spaceflight and an astronaut at Axiom Space, one of the companies funded by NASA to develop a space station.

 

Whitson said the reason there are cables all over the place is because the structure of the station wasn't designed for some of the systems it has now. She thinks having a method for making a station even more adaptable to new technology will be important in terms of user experience.

 

Whitson doesn't know what technology will be available five years from now. But she said Axiom Space will want to take advantage of whatever they can get their hands on, ideally without wires everywhere.

 

"I would like all that cabling and networking to be behind the panels so that it's easier for folks to move around in space," Whitson said. "Having and building in that adaptability is one of the most critical parts, I think, of building a station for low-Earth orbit."

 

Paulo Lozano says many of the electronic components on the ISS are bulky. But now that electronics are smaller, she expects the interior of future stations might be a bit different.

 

At the current ISS, there is one small inflatable module. That structure flies up, collapsed, and then expands as it gets filled with air once it's attached to the primary structure of the station — with it literally blowing up kind of like a balloon. Gatens says they are looking at multiple elements of a new space station being inflatable.

 

Whitson told NPR that on the space station Axiom Space is developing, they will have windows in the crew quarters and a huge cupola, what she describes as an astronaut's window to the world. On the ISS, they have a cupola you can pop your head and shoulders into and see 360-degree views of space and look down at the Earth.

 

On the proposed Axiom space station, Whitson said the cupola is so large that astronauts will be able to float their whole body in there and have it be an experience of basically almost flying in space.

 

Why commercialize low-Earth orbit?

NASA hopes that by handing responsibility of an ISS replacement over to private companies, it will allow the agency to develop technology more quickly and focus on their next goal of putting a station beyond low-Earth orbit for the first time. Current proposed low-Earth orbit stations include the Lunar Gateway, which is NASA's planned space station on the moon.

 

"What the space stations of today are doing is just paving the way for humans to actually explore deeper into space, which is going to be a significantly harder challenge to accomplish. The space stations of today are essential stepping stones towards that goal," said Lozano.

 

Gatens says one piece of technology that is being developed at Blue Origin is a big rotating space station that, when finished, would have artificial gravity.

 

For long trips in space, the lack of gravity is a main issue for the human body, causing bone-loss and other health issues. "If you could recreate that in space, that will be very beneficial," Gatens said.

 

Lozano says that a space station beyond low-Earth orbit would need new technology that is radically different from what's been used in the ISS. And both NASA and Lozano don't think it is possible to venture deeper into space, and eventually get a human on Mars, with U.S. government funding alone.

 

"I don't think we're very far away in terms of technology development. I think we're a little bit far away in terms of investment, because space technology is quite expensive and sometimes a single nation cannot really make it work by itself. So you need international cooperation." Lozano said.

The case of Peru's mysterious 'alien mummies' continues to deepen after the unveiling of two new creatures named Paloma and Antonio.

The corpses were said to have been found in the Nazca desert, where the first mummy was uncovered seven years ago by journalist and ufologist Jaime Maussan.

 

Paloma and Antonio share the same three fingers as previous mummies, but feature small, slanted eyes and are described as being the size of 'a short adult.'

The mummies were recently analyzed by Dr David Ruiz Vela, former president of Peru's Medical Association, who determined that they have human-like organs with a visible brain structure.

 

Dr. Ruiz claimed that Antonio had a stab wound in his chest, while Paloma showed evidence of hair— a first among the mummies. Both are said to be 1,500 years old.

Researchers have suggested that the bodies were fossilized by algae, which helped preserve them, along with a highly toxic adhesive that 'does not match those of the time.'

 

Maussan has presented roughly a dozen of these bodies, showcasing many of them in front of Mexico's Congress as evidence of alien beings that once walked the Earth.

While Maussan has stood firm in his claims, experts remain convinced that the mummies are nothing more than dolls manipulated by grave robbers.

 

In 2018, one year after the discovery was announced, scientists concluded from at least four independent analyses of DNA samples and other mummy materials that they were modified, pre-Columbian mummies.

But the claims have not stopped Maussan and other researchers in their tracks. The latest discoveries are unlike the previous mummies Maussan has found.

 

Paloma and Antonio differ in facial features and size, along with wounds that were found on Antonio.

'He has a stab that broke his ribs on the left side of his chest, penetrating the chest, abdomen, liver and completely perforating him inside,' Dr Ruiz Vela said in a video.

He believes that Paloma lived for up to 60 years.

 

'This is the first time we've found a dried body with hair, hair with copper-colored characteristics,' said Dr Ruiz Vela.

Jois Mantilla a journalist who has become dedicated to proving the mummies are real said that 'more will be revealed in 2025' about the creatures, specifically the secret place for where the bodies have been recovered.

The location has been kept from the public to keep looters at bay, researchers have said.

 

Mantilla said that previously found mummies has four different types of DNA, including a human from Asia, two apeds from Africa and an unknown.

'That unknown DNA is probably what makes it have the characteristics of three fingers, he said.

'I have a theory that this DNA is the DNA of its creators. We humans do not have the technological capacity to combine DNA nor with all the money in the world can we manage to mix an ape, a chimpanzee with a human.'

 

Mantilla then claimed these creatures were created in a lab at least 1,800 years ago.

A recent imaging analysis on one of the humanoids named 'Maria' found it has biological similarities to that of a human - but with 'many morphological and anatomical structural differences.'

The creature's bones were observed to flow smoothly under the mummified casing, in a way that is found throughout the human body, and its elongated skull showed no signs of artificial cranial deformation.

The team was also able to date the mummy to between 240AD and 383AD, 'indicating its coexistence with the ancient Nazca civilization,' they shared in the study.

The team conducted magnification examination, allowing them to peer inside and see that the mummy lacked hair and external ears - it only had openings of the ear canals.

 

'The most notable feature of the skull is its significant elongation, without external signs of cranial compression from external agents,' reads the study published in the Journal of Social and Environmental Management.

'Specifically, it is the cranial vault that shows an atypical growth and development, resembling a dolichocephalic phenotype. 'Additionally, the cranial volume is 30 percent larger than that of a normal human.'

 

Scans of the internal creature revealed it had bulging eyes and protruding upper and lower jaws.

Maussan turned Mexico's Congress into a circus when he brought two mummies to argue his case that they are not of this world.

He ushered in a team of researchers who performed a DNA analysis on the figures that showed 30 percent is 'not from any known species' and stated that the figures were 'authentic,' comprising a single skeleton.

 

The figures underwent carbon dating by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), which determined the bodies had three-fingered hands, no teeth and were more than 1,000 years old, Maussan claimed.

'These specimens are not part of our terrestrial evolution […] These aren't beings that were found after a UFO wreckage,' Maussan said to Congress in September.

'They were found in diatom [algae] mines and were later fossilized.'

 

He later added: 'Whether they are aliens or not, we don't know, but they were intelligent and they lived with us. They should rewrite history.' 'We are not alone in this vast universe; we should embrace this reality.'

Maussan brought a squad of medical experts who carried in a letter signed by 11 researchers from San Luis Gonzaga National University in Ica, Peru, declaring the same.

 

Anthropologist Roger Zuniga of San Luis Gonzaga National University in Ica Peru said Tuesday: 'There was absolutely no human intervention in the physical and biological formation of these beings.'

However, the letter made clear that the team was not implying the bodies were 'extraterrestrial' but did not answer where the remains originated.

 

Argentine surgeon Celestino Adolfo Piotto also took the stand, claiming he reviewed the results of testing done on the bodies and made the bizarre case that 'they were an evolved version of today's human beings, calling them 'our descendants.'

But ufologist Will Galison - a close friend of the archaeologist who first analyzed the supposed 'aliens' - said he believes the 'corpses' are dummies that are 1,000 years old.

Galison said they may have been made from animal remains a millennia ago, possibly for ritual purposes, with the heads bearing a 'remarkable similarity' to alpaca skulls.

Ukrainian draftee’s father shot dead at conscription center – MP (VIDEO)

Kiev’s recruiting campaign has allegedly turned deadly in Odessa

 

A Ukrainian man has been shot dead at a conscription center after his son was snatched by draft officers, an exiled MP has claimed.

 

The incident, which has not been confirmed by Ukrainian officials, was reported on Sunday by Artyom Dmitruk, a London-based Ukrainian lawmaker highly critical of Kiev’s current policies. He shared a video purportedly showing the moment of the shooting.

 

In the short clip,a woman filming the events can be heard shouting “take your hands off him” as a person is being forced to walk down a set of stairs. Two loud bangs resembling gunshots are then heard, and the person appears to fall down as the woman screams.

 

According to Dmitruk,the man was killed on the spot and his son’s life is now at risk.

 

He claimed that “murders at conscription centers have become normalized.”The incident allegedly occurred in the port city of Odessa.

 

Kiev ramped up its mobilization campaign this year, after its military sustained heavy casualties in the 2023 “counteroffensive” against Russia. In a major overhaul of the military service system, the age of mandatory conscription was lowered to 25, while punishments for draft avoidance were tightened.

 

According to dozens of videos circulating online, officials responsible for finding potential recruits in the streets routinely use force, as Ukrainian men resist attempts to enroll them into the military.There have been multiple confirmed incidents of people dying inside conscription centers. However, the authorities normally deny any foul play, blaming pre-existing medical conditions or accidents for the deaths.

 

Dmitruk claimed that Kiev has tried to suppress the video he shared by using bot accounts to post negative comments about it.

 

The MP left his home country earlier this year over what he claims to be political persecution by the Ukrainian government for his public opposition to Kiev’s crackdown on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He is fighting Kiev’s extradition request on charges of battery, which he claims to be fabricated.

 

Last week, draft officials in Kiev were filmed seemingly pumping flammable gas into a man’s locked car and setting it on fire in an apparent attempt to force the driver out of the vehicle.

Under the new status, Bill Gates, his foundation, and its employees were exempt from legal action for acts performed as part of their “official foundation duties.”

 

They also are exempt from paying taxes on their salaries and given the right to own property in Kenya.

 

The move came as Gates and his foundation advanced their experiments on Kenyan citizens through vaccinations and food supply manipulation.

 

Kenya is one of many third-world nations where Gates has been experimenting on powerless peoples before the schemes are rolled out on a global level.

 

“While nations around the world have long treated Bill Gates as a head of state, it’s now been practically codified into law in Kenya,” wrote Tim Schwab, author of “The Bill Gates Problem: Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire.”

 

Schwab said the decision has raised “alarm bells” within the country and across the world.

However, the High Court of Kenya has struck a critical blow against the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

 

The court suspended all of the highly controversial legal immunities and privileges recently awarded to the organization in the country.

 

The scandal has been reported locally but largely ignored by the international corporate media.

 

The ruling raises important questions about the power and privileges wielded by Gates and other super-wealthy philanthro-globalists operating in developing countries.

 

The court order was issued by Justice Bahati Mwamuye.

 

The ruling suspends the “Privileges and Immunities (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) Order, 2024.”

 

Justice Mwamuye’s order effectively strips the Gates Foundation, its directors, and agents of various legal shields awarded to them by Kenya’s government.

 

This comes amidst growing scrutiny of the Foundation’s operations, which many observers say blur the line between altruism and influence-peddling.

 

After they were awarded, the privileges quickly sparked immediate outrage among Kenyan legal experts and civil society.

Ukraine has received $1 billion backed by seized Russian assets – PM

Moscow has promised to take legal action against those responsible for stealing its wealth

 

The first $1 billion installment of a $20 billion US loan backed by impounded Russian assets has been paid to Kiev, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal announced on Tuesday. Russia has vowed to respond to the “theft.”

 

It comes two weeks after the US Treasury Department paid $20 billion into a World Bank fund for transfer to Ukraine. The EU has pledged to contribute an additional $20 billion to the fund, while G7 members Britain, Japan, and Canada will add another $10 billion, for a total of $50 billion that will theoretically be repaid over 40 years.

 

The loan was funded by interest earned from immobilized Russian sovereign assets. An estimated $300 billion worth belonging to the Russian central bank was frozen by the US and its allies following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

 

“We expect that all sovereign Russian assets will be confiscated and used to rebuild Ukraine,” Shmigal wrote in a post on X.

 

In a separate announcement on Tuesday, Shmigal said that Ukraine had also received $1 billion from Japan and the UK via the same World Bank program.

 

Ukraine’s government, military, and public services have been entirely dependent on foreign aid since 2022, and the cost of sustaining the conflict with Russia has driven the country’s finances into disarray. Last month, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky signed next year’s budget into law. It anticipates revenues of $49 billion and expenditures of $87 billion, an overall deficit of $37 billion.

 

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that the seizure of Russian assets will undermine global confidence in the US and its allies, while the Kremlin has repeatedly denounced the asset freeze as “theft” and argued that tapping into these funds would be illegal and set a dangerous precedent.

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has warned that Moscow will take legal action against those involved in the asset seizure.

Used for imaging, the satellite reportedly belonged to the Beijing-based company SpaceView.

 

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics wrote in a post on X:

 

“The commercial imaging satellite 高景一号02星 (GaoJing 1-02, Superview 1-02), operated by Beijing-based SpaceView (北京航天世景信息技术有限公司) reentered above New Orleans at 0408 UTC Dec 22 (10.08 pm CST Dec 21) heading northbound towards MS, AR, MO and was widely observed.”

Many doubted the satellite’s identification, citing the strange drones that have been flying over New Jersey and much of the East Coast.

 

The New York Post reports:

Most of these completely disintegrate well before they reach the ground, and most pieces that remain intact land in the ocean.

 

There are around 30,000 pieces of floating space junk larger than a softball, and roughly 1,000 of those are as large as a spacecraft, NOAA said.

 

NASA keeps tabs on space junk with a Space Surveillance Network that uses a combination of space and ground-based equipment.
