After eight years of prosecuting Sandra Merritt, the California Attorney General’s office agreed to a plea deal to end this criminal case with no prison time and no fines for her role in the undercover journalism and videos that exposed Planned Parenthood’s trade in aborted baby body parts.

Before this unprecedented case, the State of California had never criminally prosecuted undercover journalists for surreptitious recordings made in the public interest. Yet, this courageous grandmother was charged with 16 felonies and faced more than 10 years in prison for shining a light on the abortion industry’s profit from illegal organ harvesting from aborted babies.

Liberty Counsel has defended Merritt for more than a decade against California’s and Planned Parenthood’s two-pronged strategy of criminal indictments and a civil lawsuit. The negotiated plea agreement includes the state dropping all remaining felony counts.

Merritt will plead “No Contest” to only one felony charge, which, after a one-year probationary period will be reduced to a misdemeanor at sentencing, and then expunged from her record entirely. Merritt will serve no prison time, will pay no fines, and will have no other penalties imposed for revealing the truth about Planned Parenthood. The deal is essentially a complete victory for Merritt in this politically-motivated criminal case.

Merritt, along with her co-defendant, David Daleiden, the founder of the Center for Medical Progress, produced a series of undercover videos recorded at the National Abortion Federation’s (NAF) 2014 and 2015 abortion convention and trade shows. The videos explicitly show the abortion industry’s illegal abortion practices and sales of human body parts. The recordings capture Planned Parenthood executives haggling over the prices of baby body parts, picking through bloodied arms and legs of aborted babies in a pie tray, and discussing how to alter abortion methods to avoid violating partial-birth abortion law and obtain more profitable body parts to sell.

Rather than investigate Planned Parenthood, then California Attorney General Kamala Harris met with top Planned Parenthood officials in 2016 and subsequently ordered criminal investigations into Merritt and Daleiden while the next state attorney general, Xavier Becerra, eventually charged them with violating California’s recording law.

Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, “Sandra Merritt did nothing wrong. She did the right thing by exposing the depravity of the abortion industry. This plea agreement ends an unjust criminal case by dropping these baseless criminal charges without any prison time, fines or other penalties. House Oversight and Accountability Chairman Comer Launches Investigation into Sanctuary Cities, Invites Mayors [of Boston, Chicago, Denver, & New York] to Testify

WASHINGTON—House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) announced today an investigation into the policies of sanctuary jurisdictions and their impact on public safety and federal immigration enforcement. In letters sent to the mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City, Chairman Comer requested documents and communications related to their cities’ sanctuary policies. He also called on the mayors to testify at a committee hearing scheduled for February 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. ET.

 

“The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States and their impact on public safety and the effectiveness of federal efforts to enforce the immigration laws of the United States. Sanctuary jurisdictions and their misguided and obstructionist policies hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, making Americans less safe,” wrote Chairman Comer.

 

Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City are sanctuary jurisdictions that refuse to fully cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. Sanctuary jurisdictions are “states, counties or cities that put some limits on how much they are willing to cooperate with federal agencies’ efforts to deport” illegal aliens. These jurisdictions take it upon themselves to decide what laws they will and will not abide by all for the purpose of shielding removable aliens, especially criminals, from federal law enforcement. There are about 12 states and hundreds of cities and counties with sanctuary laws or policies across the country.

 

“On the first day of his second term, President Donald Trump took decisive actions to restore the rule of law with respect to immigration enforcement,” continued Chairman Comer. “In addition to the efforts of the Trump Administration to ensure federal immigration enforcement can proceed unimpeded, Congress must determine whether further legislation is necessary to enhance border security and public safety. It is imperative that federal immigration law is enforced and that criminal aliens are swiftly removed from our communities.”

I. INTRODUCTION

 

Plaintiffs Gwen Danielson, Emma Borhanian,Jack Lasota, and Alexander Leatham bring claims in this case based on their purportedly false arrest by Sonoma County sheriff's deputies (Joseph Ricks and Daniel Ager-collectively with Sonoma County, the “County Defendants”) after a purportedly false complaint by Defendants Westminster Woods, Christopher Rhodes, and/or Olivia Longstaff (the “Westminster Defendants”). Plaintiffs now move to stay the case based on criminal charges that have been filed against them related to the arrests at issue. The County Defendants do not oppose the stay. The Westminster Defendants oppose the stay for the limited purpose of resolving their pending motion to dismiss under Rule 12(b)(6) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, but do not oppose a stay of further proceedings if the Court were to deny the motion to dismiss.

 

The Court finds the matter suitable for resolution without oral argument, and VACATES the hearing and case management conference previously set for April 22, 2022. A status conference will occur on August 19, 2022 at 2:00 PM.

 

For the reasons discussed below, Plaintiffs' motion to stay is GRANTED. The Westminster Defendants' motion to dismiss is DENIED as moot, without prejudice to any argument they might raise after the stay is lifted.

 

The parties have consented to the jurisdiction of a magistrate judge for all purposes under 28 U.S.C. § 636(c).

 

II. BACKGROUND

 

Plaintiffs allege that on November 15, 2019, the Westminster Defendants falsely reported to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department that Plaintiffs had a gun,in order to disrupt Plaintiffs' protest at the Westminster Woods property regarding an alleged coverup of child molestation.Compl. (dkt. 1) ¶¶ 20-21. According to Plaintiffs' complaint, the County Defendants arrested each plaintiff for possession of a firearm, despite only one gun being reported and no gun being found. Id. ¶ 22. Plaintiffs allege they were mistreated during and after their arrests. Id. ¶¶ 24-25. Plaintiffs assert claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and California's Bane Act and Ralph Act. Id. ¶¶ 26-40. Except for two claims addressing only liability by the County of Sonoma (the ADA claim and a Monell claim), Plaintiffs' claims generally do not distinguish among the various defendants, instead referring generally to misconduct by “Defendants.” See id.

 

On November 10, 2019, Plaintiffs were charged in state court with felony conspiracy “to commit the crime[s] of Trespass, False Imprisonment, Child Abuse, Resisting Arrest, and Wearling Masks to Avoid Identification, ” as well as related misdemeanors. Friedman Decl. (dkt. 27-1) Ex. A (felony complaint) at 1-2. Plaintiffs' complaint, filed in November of 2021, acknowledged the pending criminal charges, stating that “Plaintiffs seek a stay of this civil action until the underlying criminal matter has resolved” and “will seek to amend this complaint after the underlying criminal matter resolves.” Compl. ¶ 5.

A group of masked and hooded demonstrators who were arrested Friday after they barricaded the entrance to an Occidental-area retreat center were protesting an event hosted by a Berkeley rationality and cognitive bias nonprofit, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

 

Four people were taken into custody after sheriff’s deputies swarmed the wooded area outside the Westminster Woods camp near Camp Meeker, where authorities were told about 3:40 p.m. of a group of “unwanted people,” including one person said to have had a gun, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

 

No weapon was found but the protesters,wearing robes and Guy Fawkes masks, did not follow deputies’ orders and physically resisted efforts to detain them, the Sheriff’s Office said. The mask is a symbol of the online group Anonymous and is worn by the main character in the movie “V for Vendetta” though it does not appear the protesters were with any specific group, Sonoma County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Misti Wood said.

 

The arrested suspects were identified Monday afternoon as Jack Lasota, 28, of Berkeley, Emma Borhanian, 28, of Albany, Gwen Danielson, 25, a homeless person and Alexander Leatham, 24, whose hometown was unknown, authorities said.

 

The group was found carrying pepper spray, a body-worn camera and walkie-talkie radios, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

 

All except Borhanian remained at the Sonoma County Jail on Monday afternoon on bail of $50,000.

 

Each faced offenses including felony suspicion of child endangerment, false imprisonment, conspiracy, misdemeanor resisting arrest, wearing a mask while committing a crime and trespassing, authorities said. A fifth person, who initially claimed to be a reporter, was released. Authorities determined that person committed no crime, the Sheriff’s Office said.

 

Protesters used a small bus, a box truck and a Toyota Prius to block both entrances to Westminster Woods, preventing anyone from leaving, the Sheriff’s Office said. A group of about a dozen adults with the Center for Applied Rationality, the Berkeley nonprofit, were guests at the campground at the time, authorities said. ? A SWAT team was called in, and along with deputies, they swept the area in search of a gunman while a Sheriff’s Office helicopter flew overhead.

 

About 50 people, including about three dozen who were sheltering in place at Westminster Woods, were evacuated from the campground and driven to the Occidental Fire Department in a school bus.

 

The suspects declined to identify themselves in subsequent interviews with deputies, leading detectives to use fingerprints to identify them, the Sheriff’s Office said.

What do I mean?

America has a health crisis with young people in the ages of 18-28, the military's primary recruiting demographic. Obesity, reliance on SSRIs and other mood altering drugs, allergies and asthma, and a host of other modern medical conditions are epidemics that render huge portions of that demographic unfit to serve in the military.

Even when you look at the troops who are currently serving, a much higher percentage of those troops are fat than at any other time I can recall.

RFK Jr. needs to get into office so he can transform nutritional and prescription drug guidelines and policies, and make America healthy again.

Pete Hegseth's focus on warfighting and lethality depends on a healthy generation of young people who are fit to serve.

When the shootout went down in Vermont on January 20, the initial reports were very thin, but piece by piece, we’ve learned more about the two suspects, Teresa Youngblut, a 21-year-old from Seattle, and Felix Bauckholt, a math genius from Germany who hadworked in the financial industry on__ an H1B visa__. About seven months ago, Youngblut’s parents had reported her missing, saying she had cut off contact with them and they were concerned she might be in a coercive relationship. The police didn’t do anything, saying that as an adult, she couldn’t be considered a runaway.

That person, who was not identified, is a person of interest in a double homicide in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, prosecutors said.

Bauckholt flew into the U.S. in the hours before the Pennsylvania murders. Prosecutors also said that Youngblut has been in “frequent contact” with an individual who was detained during the investigation into the double homicide.

That individual is also a person of interest in a murder investigation in Vallejo, California, federal prosecutors said. No other details were provided.

 

That’s three other murders that this is connected to. The start of the post is copy-pasted below. Note that the post is anonymous, and I am not claiming to have written it.

 

Some people in the rationalist community are concerned about risks of physical violence from Ziz and some of her associates. Following discussions with several people, I’m posting here to explain where those concerns come from, and recommend some responses.

TLDR (details and links in the post body)

 

Over the past few years, Ziz has repeatedly called for the deaths of many different classes of people.

In August of 2022, Ziz seems to have faked her own death. Ziz’s close associate Gwen Danielson may have done the same thing in April of 2022.

In November of 2022, three associates of Ziz (Somnulence “Somni” Logencia, Emma Borhanian, and someone going by the alias “Suri Dao”) got into a violent conflict with their landlord in Vallejo, California, according to court records and news reports. Somni stabbed the landlord in the back with a sword, and the landlord shot Somni and Emma. Emma died, and Somni and Suri were arrested. Ziz and Gwen were seen by police at the scene, alive.

I gather that Pennsylvania police believe, based on a lot of circumstantial evidence and investigation, that one or more of Ziz, Michelle “Jamie” Zajko, or Daniel Blank was very plausibly involved in the murder of Jamie’s parents in Pennsylvania around December 31st, 2022.

Ziz is currently in police custody on charges related to obstructing a PA police investigation. Daniel, Jamie, and Gwen are not in custody (as far as I know), and I don’t know their locations.

I don’t know of any concrete plans by Ziz or her associates to do anything else violent, but it seemed like a good idea to raise a loud alarm about all of this now. People should speak up (or at least tell a friend) if they have information, and should take whatever safety precautions make sense for their situation in case more violence occurs at some point in the future.

 

Even seemingly minor pieces of information might be helpful here, since they could add up to a clearer picture when combined with other information that also seems minor. This is a complicated situation that I don’t fully understand, and it’s likely that I’m getting some facts wrong. I’ve talked to a lot of people in an attempt to piece together what happened, and I’ll try to update this post with corrections or important details if they’re brought to my attention.

 

Please keep in mind, as I am trying to keep in mind myself, that every observation is evidence for more than one hypothesis, that things are often not what they seem, and that it’s useful to make the effort to think about both what’s appropriate to do in the world where your best guesses are true, and what’s appropriate to do in the world where your best guesses are wrong. Split and commit is better than seeking confirmation of a single theory.

New Evidence Shows Chester Heights Double Murder Not ‘Random Act of Violence'

A document released by the troopers notes that the deaths have been ruled a homicide and based on information gathered through "dozens of interviews" law enforcement officials believe the murders were not a random act of violence.

I agree. The problem is that every state has an elected “law makers” who can make any law they want without oversight or an easy process of repeal.

 

Additionally, the federal government and state governments refuse to embrace technology and hide behind email and office clerks.

AUSTIN, Texas - The State Bar of Texas is dropping its challenge that Attorney General Ken Paxton violated the state's rules of professional conduct when he sued over the results of the 2020 presidential election.

 

The move comes less than a month after the Texas Supreme Court dismissed similar claims against Assistant Attorney General Brent Webster.

 

In a filing to the court Thursday, the Commission for Lawyer Discipline filed a motion to dismiss the case against Paxton citing it argued the same separation of powers issues that the earlier case against Webster raised.

 

The backstory:

The Commission brought suit against Paxton in response to Paxton filing a lawsuit against Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin over election fraud in the 2020 election.

 

Paxton and the state of Texas sought to prevent those states from deciding on their appointments to the Electoral College.

 

The Commission argued Paxton made dishonest remarks to the U.S. Supreme Court by saying votes from unregistered voters were counted in those states, some votes were switched by a glitch with voting machines, the states' election statutes were "unconstitutionally" changed and that "illegal votes" affected the outcome of the election.

 

Through those arguments, the Commission said Paxton had violated the rules of conduct that govern dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation.

 

Paxton had argued that a disciplinary case could not be raised against him in his official capacity as attorney general. The Fifth District Court of Appeals, however, said the commission was suing Paxton for misconduct as an individual and not through his role of attorney general, mimicking the decision by the Eighth Circuit in the Webster case.

 

Paxton filed an appeal with the state Supreme Court.

 

After the Texas Supreme Court dismissed the claims against Webster, the commission filed to have its claim against Paxton dismissed. The case a dismissed on the grounds the the Fifth Circuit's judgment that defined that case as against Paxton as an individual be vacated.

66 million-year-old fish vomit discovered in Denmark

A piece of fossilised vomit dating back to the time of the dinosaurs has been discovered in Denmark.

 

Local fossil hunter Peter Bennicke found the fossil at Stevns Klint - a Unesco-listed coastal cliff in the east of the country.

 

The self-declared "fossil geek" said he came across some unusual-looking fragments which turned out to be pieces of sea lily - an underwater species related to starfish and sea urchins - in a piece of chalk.

 

Mr Bennicke took the fragments to be examined at the Museum of East Zealand, which confirmed the vomit could be dated to the end of the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago - a time when dinosaurs including Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops existed.

Jesper Milan, palaeontologist and curator at the museum, told the BBC it was "truly an unusual find" as it helps explain relationships in the prehistoric food chain.

 

"It tells us something about who was eating who 66 million years ago," he said.

 

During the period fish and sharks would eat sea lilies, which are hard to digest meaning they would then "regurgitate all the chalk bits", he explained.

 

"This find is a unique glimpse into the everyday situation in the bottom of the Cretaceous sea - the sea during which the dinosaurs lived," he said.

 

The discovery is also significant for improving our understanding of past ecosystems.

2) Corrupt suicidal European governments want a major war with Russia badly. Europe is NOT a place you will wish to have your money in or to invest heavily into. Vanderbilt-led NASA satellite mission enters implementation phase

Vanderbilt’s $42 million NASA-supported satellite mission dedicated to studying ice cloud formation was approved for its next stage of development on Oct. 29, 2024.

Since then, engineers and scientists at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center have been gathering materials while Blue Canyon Technology builds the two spacecrafts necessary for the estimated 2027 launch.

 

The mission was selected with the intention of helping scientists and humanity at large understand Earth’s dynamic atmosphere.

Dr. Ralf Bennartz, professor of earth and environmental science, is the principal investigator for the mission. He emphasized the project’s focus on ice clouds as an underrepresented area for research within climate science.

 

“Climate predictions come with uncertainty. We don’t quite know exactly how the Earth is going to be warming in 10, 20 [or] 50 years from now,” Bennartz said.

“We want to give constraints to people who model the climate system, and in doing so, provide better guidance for environmental and government agencies on mitigating climate change 30, 40 years from now.”

 

The NASA instrument that will be used in the mission is known as the Polarized Submillimeter Ice-cloud Radiometer (PolSIR), which can travel around the Earth 14 to 15 times in one day and will take measurements to help scientists determine how ice clouds behave.

Bennartz said this project represents the technological development of the U.S. on a global scale.

 

“This is an observation concept that has not been realized in the U.S. as of yet. The Chinese have instruments they’re putting into space.

The Europeans have similar instruments they’re putting into space, although not quite with exactly the same capabilities,” Bennartz said.

“On the U.S. side, we’re playing a little bit of technological catch-up with other global leaders in Earth exploration.”

 

In addition to the technological development occurring in the implementation phase, the project also includes student collaboration and educational programming.

Christopher Vanags, director of the Peabody research office and a research assistant professor in earth and environmental sciences, currently leads the project’s educational efforts.

He said a big objective of this work is to make science more accessible.

 

“My job is about connecting scientists with the community.

They’re thinking very deeply about the science that’s involved in getting this radiometer up into space [and] how to control it — things like that,” Vanags said.

“I think a really important component of that is to take what they’re doing and sort of give the public an eye into that process.”

 

According to Vanags, one of the biggest educational initiatives he leads includes providing high school students at the School for Science and Math at Vanderbilt opportunities to work on projects involving topics like computational thinking and electrical engineering.

Pamela Popp, an instructor at Vanderbilt’s collaborative for STEM education and outreach, expressed excitement about seeing students’ enthusiasm for a project with such significance.

 

“It’s about following these processes that are parallel to the high-tech processes that the NASA scientists are doing,” Popp said. “Everybody wants to work with NASA. If you’re interested in STEM at all, that’s every kid’s dream.”

Beyond K-12 outreach, Bennartz said he sees a lot of potential for undergraduate involvement, as students would gain exposure to scientists from various universities, including Columbia University, the University of Michigan and Texas A&M.

 

“We’re trying to do a little sandbox theoretical experiment to see how the instrument will take observations, eventually leading all the way down to improved climate modeling,” Bennartz said.

“There is a great science team beyond just my group at Vanderbilt, which is something potentially very attractive to undergraduates as well as graduate students because they get embedded in this nationwide and international project.”

 

Planning for the project initially began in May of 2023, which is when NASA-granted funding for the project was approved.

While there have been pauses on research funding due to recent executive actions by President Donald Trump’s administration, Bennartz said he does not think the project will be immediately affected by these actions.

 

Additionally, Bennartz added that while the $42 million project is on the smaller side of NASA missions, he believes the project still represents notable strides in the field of climate research.

“We are a small mission, but I think we can ultimately contribute something significant to help make better climate predictions. It’s very exciting,” Bennartz said.

During its 65th close flyby of Jupiter on Sept. 20, 2024, NASA's Juno spacecraft captured this series of images as it approached the giant planet and swung low over its north polar region.

Juno's recent orbits have provided exceptionally clear views of Jupiter's circumpolar cyclones.

 

At closest approach in this series of images, the Juno spacecraft was about 6,800 miles (11,000 kilometers) above the cloud tops, at a latitude of 82 degrees north of the equator.

Citizen scientist Brian Swift made this image using raw data from the JunoCam instrument, applying digital processing techniques to enhance color and clarity.

GLOBAL REALITIES AND THREATS OF 2025 - 2030:

 

1) The economic damage done to America over the last decade has been extreme. Due to massive national debt insolvency, horrible economic policies, horrible foreign policies, wasteful governmental spending, a corrupt incompetent and bloated bureaucracy the American economy will take many years to recover. Hopefully under a new Trump administration they can boost energy production, bring down energy prices, reduce bureaucracy, lower interest rates for credit card debt and loans, lower taxes and give incentive to produce more here. In the meantime inflation is here to stay, be prepared.

 

2) Corrupt suicidal European governments want a major war with Russia badly. Europe is NOT a place you will wish to have your money in or to invest heavily into. European governments absolutely refuse to give up on project Ukraine. The coming war between Europe and Russia will happen, and when it does it will be lights out for most of Europe, with an economic collapse, martial law and harsh austerity measures that include the seizure of assets, bank accounts, pension funds and savings, combined with social unrest from new conscription laws and nullification of any freedom or individual activities. GET OUT OF EUROPE: physically and financially.

 

3) America, China and India will become the biggest safe havens during the Europe-Russian war. China and India will not become directly involved with this coming war. Americans, for the most part, are dead against being dragged into conflict to save Europe's corrupt asses. Trump is not likely to come to the rescue of assholes who are currently running Europe, it would be both extremely unpopular and face large popular resistance and be political suicide for Trump's administration. Trump will likely tell Europe if they wish to commit suicide they do it on their own terms, not at the expense of America. Black Holes Can Cook for Themselves, Chandra Study Shows

Astronomers have taken a crucial step in showing that the most massive black holes in the universe can create their own meals.

Data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) provide new evidence that outbursts from black holes can help cool down gas to feed themselves.

 

This study was based on observations of seven clusters of galaxies.

The centers of galaxy clusters contain the universe’s most massive galaxies, which harbor huge black holes with masses ranging from millions to tens of billions of times that of the Sun.

Jets from these black holes are driven by the black holes feasting on gas.

 

These images show two of the galaxy clusters in the study, the Perseus Cluster and the Centaurus Cluster.

Chandra data represented in blue reveals X-rays from filaments of hot gas, and data from the VLT, an optical telescope in Chile, shows cooler filaments in red.

 

The results support a model where outbursts from the black holes trigger hot gas to cool and form narrow filaments of warm gas.

Turbulence in the gas also plays an important role in this triggering process.

 

According to this model, some of the warm gas in these filaments should then flow into the centers of the galaxies to feed the black holes, causing an outburst.

The outburst causes more gas to cool and feed the black holes, leading to further outbursts.

 

This model predicts there will be a relationship between the brightness of filaments of hot and warm gas in the centers of galaxy clusters.

More specifically, in regions where the hot gas is brighter, the warm gas should also be brighter.

The team of astronomers has, for the first time, discovered such a relationship, giving critical support for the model.

 

This result also provides new understanding of these gas-filled filaments, which are important not just for feeding black holes but also for causing new stars to form.

This advance was made possible by an innovative technique that isolates the hot filaments in the Chandra X-ray data from other structures, including large cavities in the hot gas created by the black hole’s jets.

 

The newly found relationship for these filaments shows remarkable similarity to the one found in the tails of jellyfish galaxies, which have had gas stripped away from them as they travel through surrounding gas, forming long tails.

This similarity reveals an unexpected cosmic connection between the two objects and implies a similar process is occurring in these objects.

 

This work was led by Valeria Olivares from the University of Santiago de Chile, and was published Monday in Nature Astronomy.

The study brought together international experts in optical and X-ray observations and simulations from the United States, Chile, Australia, Canada, and Italy.

The work relied on the capabilities of the MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) instrument on the VLT, which generates 3D views of the universe.

 

Visual Description

This release features composite images shown side-by-side of two different galaxy clusters, each with a central black hole surrounded by patches and filaments of gas.

The galaxy clusters, known as Perseus and Centaurus, are two of seven galaxy clusters observed as part of an international study led by the University of Santiago de Chile.

 

In each image, a patch of purple with neon pink veins floats in the blackness of space, surrounded by flecks of light. At the center of each patch is a glowing, bright white dot.

The bright white dots are black holes. The purple patches represent hot X-ray gas, and the neon pink veins represent filaments of warm gas. According to the model published in the study, jets from the black holes impact the hot X-ray gas.

This gas cools into warm filaments, with some warm gas flowing back into the black hole. The return flow of warm gas causes jets to again cool the hot gas, triggering the cycle once again.

 

While the images of the two galaxy clusters are broadly similar, there are significant visual differences.

In the image of the Perseus Cluster on the left, the surrounding flecks of light are larger and brighter, making the individual galaxies they represent easier to discern.

Here, the purple gas has a blue tint, and the hot pink filaments appear solid, as if rendered with quivering strokes of a paintbrush.

 

In the image of the Centaurus Cluster on the right, the purple gas appears softer, with a more diffuse quality.

The filaments are rendered in more detail, with feathery edges, and gradation in color ranging from pale pink to neon red.

Artificial-intelligence models from China’s DeepSeek, the company led by Liang, have taken the world by surprise, racing to the global top 10 in both performance and popularity.The company has done it with less-advanced chipsthan those available in the U.S., jolting technology executives in Silicon Valley, politicians in Washington and investors around the globe.

 

Like Simons, Liang is amath geek who caught the investing bug. He realized that computerized analysis of reams of market data could detect hidden patterns—and open the path to profit.His hedge fund, called High-Flyer, manages some $8 billion, making it one of China’s largest quantitative funds.

 

Colleagues say Liangisn’t one for the trappings of wealth or fame—but he did once say he wanted the respect of the U.S.-led technology world.

 

It is safe to say he has it now.

 

Born in 1985, Liang grew up in Zhanjiang, one of the port cities on the southern Chinese coast that have traded with the world for centuries. He was a straight-A student in school and began studying calculus on his own in junior high school before going on to China’s prestigious Zhejiang University.

 

As a student, Liang started writing AI algorithms to pick stocks. In 2013,a few years after graduation, he started Jacobi, an investment firm named after German mathematician Carl Jacobi. In 2015, he founded High-Flyer with two college friends.

 

It was a pioneer in China in applying newer AI techniques so computers could absorb many types of data—not just market prices—and tease out significant patterns. Unlike high-frequency traders, who try to get a jump of a few milliseconds on others, Liang and his colleagues have focused on medium-frequency trading where positions can be held longer.

 

Liang drew inspiration from Simons, a mathematician and pioneer in quantitative financewho founded the Long Island hedge fund Renaissance Technologies and was using machine-learning techniques in the 1980s.

 

Liang wrote the introduction to the Chinese version of “The Man Who Solved the Market,” a book about Simons and his team. “Whenever I encounter difficulties at work, I recall Simons’s words: ‘There must be a way to model prices,’ ” Liang wrote.

 

Over the past five years, at least five funds High-Flyer managed produced average excess returns of more than 20% compared with market benchmarks, according to financial data provider Simu Paipaiwang.

 

There have been bumpy patches too. In 2021, High-Flyer apologized to its investors for poor performance, saying it misread which sectors of the market would perform well. Another rough spot occurred last year when China’s financial regulator clamped down on quants, accusing them of herd behavior that exacerbated volatility.

 

Richard Dewey, a technology executive and former hedge-fund manager, said DeepSeek’s AI development strategy of doing more with less—a smaller team, less money and fewer chips—reminded him of quant traders.

 

“They seem to have focused on wringing a lot of signal out of a relatively small amount of data, which is similar in spirit to what’s required in quantitative trading,” Dewey said.
