Supervisor let air traffic controller leave shift early before DC plane crash: report

A supervisor at the Reagan National Airport tower reportedly let an air traffic controller leave early from his shift shortly before Wednesday night’s deadly collision over the Potomac River.

As a result, a single controller was handling the air traffic of both airplanes and helicopters flying in the area, a source familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

One controller is typically in charge of helicopters while another watches over airplanes. The FAA said Thursday that one air traffic controller was doing the job of two people at the time of the devastating crash.

According to radio transmissions from Wednesday night, the lone controller warned the US Army Black Hawk that it was getting too close to the American Airlines passenger flight, which the experienced helicopter pilot acknowledged.

Experts believe the helicopter pilot may have maneuvered to avoid the wrong plane — a jet of the same model that was taking off farther away — and never saw the American Airlines flight until it was too late.

The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating whether the chopper was flying too high.

All the mistakes that led to DC plane crash as it is revealed air traffic controller left early

An air traffic controller was reportedly allowed to leave their post early just before American Airlines Flight 5342 collided in midair with a military helicopter over Washington DC.

 

Insiders and a preliminary internal FAA report have started to reveal catastrophic failures leading up to the aviation disaster that killed 67 people, including three soldiers, Wednesday night.

 

The collision took place as the American Airlines flight, carrying 60 passengers and four crew, made its final approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport shortly before 9pm ET.

 

That night, an air traffic controller was left to handle both helicopter traffic and manage planes - which should have been a divided duty - according to The New York Times.

 

Those tasks are usually handled between two people from 10am until 9:30pm, according to the report.

 

After 9:30pm the duties are typically combined and left to one person as the airport sees less traffic later in the night.

 

A supervisor reportedly decided to combine those duties before the scheduled cutoff time however, and allowed one air traffic controller to leave work early.

 

The FAA report said that staffing configuration 'was not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic'.

 

It remains unclear why the supervisor allowed the worker to clock off early on Wednesday night, just before the midair collision.

 

Chilling minute-by-minute timeline of tragic DC plane crash

 

It has also emerged that the Army helicopter, which was carrying three soldiers, involved in the collision might have also deviated from its approved flight path.

 

The outlet again spoke with insiders that said the Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter was not on its approved route and flying higher than it should have been.

 

Approval had been given for the helicopter to fly no higher than 200 feet along the east side of the Potomac River, where it would have avoided the passenger jet.

 

The pilot of the helicopter confirmed sight of the American Airlines flight and was told to stick to their predetermined route and go behind the plane.

 

Sources said the pilot did not stick to the path however and was a half-mile off course as well as being at an altitude above 300 feet.

 

A senior Army official told The Times that the pilot of the Black Hawk had flown the route before and was well aware of the tight altitude restrictions and routes.

 

As the jet approached the runway, those onboard had asked air traffic control to change their runway, according to an FAA report.

 

The plane, a Bombardier CRJ700, had been cleared to touch down on Runway 1, the main airport thoroughfare, but the controller then asked the pilot to land on Runway 33.

 

A source told The Times that such a move is routine especially with regional jets, and that the decision might have been made to prevent clogging on the main runway.

 

Five current and former controllers also told the outlet thatthe lone controller in the tower should have been more proactive in directing the two away from each other.

 

The darkness could have played a part in what made it so difficult for both pilots to actually gauge their distance apart, they added.

Reagan National has been understaffed for many years, with just 19 fully certified controllers as of September 2023 - well below the target of 30 - according to the most recent Air Traffic Controller Workforce Plan submitted to Congress.

 

The situation appeared to have improved since then, as a source told CNN the Reagan National control tower was 85 percent staffed with 24 of 28 positions filled.

 

Chronic understaffing at air traffic control towers is nothing new, with well-known causes including high turnover and budget cuts.

 

In order to fill the gaps, controllers are frequently asked to work 10-hour days, six days a week.

 

The two aircraft had collided in a huge fireball that was visible on dashcams of cars driving on highways that snake around the airport, before plunging into the river.

 

On Thursday morning officials confirmed all 67 on both the plane and helicopter had perished, with their rescue mission then becoming a recovery operation.

 

Investigators made a break through later that night, after they had pulled 40 bodies to shore, when they found two black boxes from the American Airlines flight.

 

A flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were pulled from the river by salvage teams.

 

This will be of monumental assistance to authorities as they investigate what exactly happened in the moments leading to disaster.

 

The identities of those who died in the collision have started to trickle out, with DailyMail.com revealing the identities of the pilot and first officer.

 

Among the crash victims were people from Russia, China, Germany and the Philippines, including young figure skaters.

 

Captain Jonathan Campos, 34, and First Officer Samuel Lilley had been in charge of the flight from Wichita, Kansas, to the capital.

 

Two Chinese nationals were among the victims of the crash, the Chinese Embassy in the US said in a statement, without providing further details.

 

In an situation eerily similar to what happened on Wednesday night, a Republic Airways flight had to abort landing at the airport on Tuesday after a helicopter appeared near its flight path.

I was born in the 1950s. Back then, a lot of the picking of crops was done as summer jobs for high school students. We picked berries, beans and other produce. It was fun, it was there I first smoked weed, met. bunch of great people and made some money. The idea that no one would pick crops is just ludicrous.

More recent, one time driving through one of the fertile valleys of California, I observed laborers harvesting what looked like cauliflower. The stooped down, cut the plant, then stood, climbed 2 steps onto a trailer type thing being towed ahead of them and put the cauliflower in a bin. Then jumped down to get another one. I wondered how long I could or would perform that task. It was nothing like the farm labor I did in the 60s.

Mysterious 'Help' Markings Spotted in LA on Google Maps: What We Know

Mysterious etchings at what appears to be a Los Angeles rail yard have captured the attention of internet sleuths.

Social media users recently noticed that Google Maps' satellite imagery shows the words "HELP" and "TRAFICO" written out with large pieces of debris in an empty yard off the San Bernardino Freeway.

A group of self-described adventurers from the FaZe Clan also claim to have seen the messages in person.

 

The Los Angeles Police Department told Newsweek the property belongs to the Union Pacific Railroad.

 

A spokesperson for the Union Pacific Police Department told Newsweek: "Photos circulating on Google maps that show the word 'help' on Union Pacific property were created about a year ago - no one was or is in danger.

A man trespassed on Union Pacific and other nearby properties to repeatedly create these misleading messages.

We want to remind the public that it is illegal - and more importantly unsafe - to trespass on Union Pacific property."

 

The images have raised concerns among users who fear the yard's location might be connected to human trafficking crimes.

'Tráfico' translates to 'Traffic' in English. A video of the livestream hosted by members of the FaZe Clan investigating the markings has also garnered over 1.3 million views on X, formerly Twitter.

 

Concerns about the "help" signs appear to stem from a tweet that Dom Lucre, an internet personality with 1.5 million X followers, posted on X Sunday.

The Union Pacific Police Department spokesperson told Newsweek the images shown on Google Maps are a year old.

After hearing about the markings, three of FaZe Clan's members visited the location and captured the word "help" spelled out with large pipes on video. The group also noticed a drone flying above the yard.

 

Another user by the handle @nmewrath interviewed one of the individuals living in the alley that the FaZe Clan was trying to enter, asking what those "help" signs were about.

The woman credited one man with always putting those up, saying, "It's just one guy. He always—he puts that," as she gestured to the signs.

 

She said his name was Jose, and he was based under the bridge on the other side of the yard.

She said she does not know if there are any real concerns about human trafficking but added that she believes it's the same man behind all the markings.

It's mostly Hispanic people living there and many of them have lived and had businesses in the area for 30+ years and are being forced out in favour of this construction.

It may be a homeless man mad at being forced to move his encampment like some have said, it may be several locals coming together and trying to scare away the construction, it may even be a street artist like some L.A. residents have speculated.

 

"But looking at the pictures and the sheer size of some of the materials used to create these "signs" I'd be willing to bet it's not anyone being trafficked and legitimately looking for help… it's too obvious and would put them in too much danger.

I'd put my money more on some sort of protest from an angry inhabitant(s) of the area."

 

It is unclear whether officials are investigating the location or if the calls for "help" are of legitimate concern.

The internet personalities approached people in tents and cars in a nearby alley, asking for interviews. However, individuals in a truck that drove past allegedly told them to "get out."

It is unclear from the video what the people in the car said. As they continued to walk the fence around the yard, they said they saw a guard dog and began sprinting away.

 

Asked about the live stream, Union Pacific Police Department told Newsweek the matter is not an ongoing issue.

Hubble Spots a Supernova

The subject of this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image is a supernova-hosting galaxy located about 600 million light-years away in the constellation Gemini.

Hubble captured this image roughly two months after a supernova named SN 2022aajn was discovered.

The supernova is visible as a blue dot at the center of the image, brightening the hazy body of the galaxy.

 

Other than the announcement of its discovery in November 2022, SN 2022aajn has never been the subject of published research. Why then would Hubble observe this supernova?

SN 2022aajn is what’s known as a Type Ia supernova, which results from the explosion of the core of a dead star. Supernovae of this type help astronomers measure the distance to faraway galaxies.

This is possible because Type Ia supernovae have the same intrinsic luminosity — no matter how bright they seem from Earth, they put out the same amount of light as other Type Ia supernovae.

By comparing the observed brightness to the known intrinsic brightness, researchers can calculate the distance to the supernova and its host galaxy.

 

This seemingly simple way of measuring distances is complicated by cosmic dust. The farther away a supernova is, the fainter and redder it will appear — but intergalactic dust can make a supernova appear fainter and redder as well.

To understand this complication, researchers will use Hubble to survey a total of 100 Type Ia supernovae in seven wavelength bands from ultraviolet to near-infrared.

This image combines data taken at four infrared wavelengths. Infrared light passes through dust more easily than visible or ultraviolet light.

By comparing the brightness of the sampled supernovae across different wavelengths, researchers can disentangle the effects of dust and distance, helping to improve measurements of galaxies billions of light-years away.

We’re planning sols 4439 and 4440 on the first day of the Lunar New Year here on Earth, and I’m the Geology/Mineralogy Science Theme Lead for today.

The new year is a time for all kinds of abundance and good luck, and we are certainly lucky to be celebrating another new year on Mars with the Curiosity rover!

 

The rover’s current position is on the north side of the “Texoli” butte west of the “Rustic Canyon” crater, and we are on our way southwest through the layered sulfate unit toward a possible boxwork structure that we hope to study later this year.

Today’s workspace included a couple of representative bedrock blocks with contrasting textures, so we planned an APXS elemental chemistry measurement on one (“Deer Springs”) and a LIBS elemental measurement on another (“Taco Peak”).

 

For imaging, there were quite a few targets in view making it possible to advance a variety of science goals.

The ChemCam remote imager was used for a mosaic on “Wilkerson Butte” to observe the pattern of resistant and recessive layering.

Mastcam mosaics explored some distant landforms (“Sandstone Peak,” “Wella’s Peak”) as well as fractures, block shapes and textures, and aeolian ripples closer to the rover (“Tahquitz Peak,” “Mount Islip,” “Vasquez Rocks,” “Dawson Saddle”).

Our regular environmental science measurements were made as well, to track atmospheric opacity and dust activity. So our planning sols include an abundance of targets indeed.

 

Fun fact: Today’s name “Vasquez Rocks” comes from a site on Earth in Southern California that has been a popular spot for science fiction filming, appearing in several episodes of “Star Trek” going back to the original series!

Leonnig, Ian Duncan and Michael Laris On Tuesday night, just 24 hours before a deadly collision between a military helicopter and a regional jet at Reagan National Airport, a different passenger jet coming in for a landing at the airport alerted the tower it had to abort.

 

The reason: risk of possible collision with a helicopter. A similar situation played out less than a week earlier, on Jan. 23, when a flight from Charlotte suddenly pulled out of its approach at National. The captain informed passengers that he was tracking a helicopter and needed to abort the landing.

 

“They had to circle back around because there was a helicopter in the flight path,” Richard Hart, a passenger returning from a business trip, recalled the pilot announcing. “At the time I found it odd. …

Now I find it disturbingly tragic.” The two scrubbed landings within a week illustrate the heightened danger posed by frequent military helicopter flights adjacent to the busy airport, which have been the source of close calls and worries about crashes for years.

 

The U.S. Army Black Hawk that crashed into an American Airlines regional jet Wednesday night and killed 64 people, as well as three Army crew members on the chopper, had been flying along the east bank of the Potomac River in a flight corridor designated for low-flying helicopters.

 

The narrow lane for helicopters keeps them away from jetliner flight paths in much of National’s airspace, but it intersects with the path of aircraft on the southeastern approach to Runway 33, which is where American Eagle Flight 5342 from Wichita was attempting to land Wednesday.

 

Frequent military training and other flights around the airport have prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to place an air traffic controller dedicated to helicopters in the National Airport tower to manage the hazards, a person who is familiar with tower operations said.

 

But staffing levels were “not normal” inside the tower at the time of Wednesday night’s accident, and no single controller was assigned to helicopter flights, according to an air traffic safety report described to The Washington Post.

 

When the crash occurred around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, the job of managing helicopters in the vicinity was being handled by a controller who was also managing other air traffic, said the person,who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

 

According to a 2023 report to Congress, 50 entities operated roughly 88,000 helicopter flights within 30 miles of the airport between 2017 and 2019, based on FAA data. The largest percentage were tied to the military, but others included flights by medical operations, state and local law enforcement, and federal agencies.

 

Some experts in aircraft safety raised questions about procedures and helicopter flight patterns. Jim Brauchle, an Air Force veteran who flew cargo planes and now represents plane crash victims as an attorney at Motley Rice, citing maps for aircraft in the area, said planes approaching Runway 33 fly north on the eastern side of the Potomac River, then bank left as they descend.

Investigators are still trying to determine what led to the midair collision, which caused a fireball in the air and sent pieces of aircraft plunging into the icy Potomac River. After searching the river all night, officials said early Thursday morning they did not expect to find any survivors.

 

The crash is likely to be the deadliest in the Washington area since Air Florida Flight 90 struck the 14th Street Bridge just after takeoff from National Airport. Seventy-four of 79 passengers and crew members died in the crash on Jan. 13, 1982.Four motorists on the bridge were killed.

 

Investigators said thecrash was caused by a combination of pilot error and improper deicing procedures amid a snowstorm and freezing temperatures. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said early Thursday that after the FAA “studies what happened, we will take appropriate action, if necessary, to modify flight paths and permissions.”

 

Wednesday’s crash happened on a clear but windy night, after air traffic controllers directed the American pilots to land at one of the airport’s smaller runways, a shift to the east that put it closer to the Army helicopter approaching on that side of the river.

 

It meant the helicopter’s route would cross the regional jet’s approach for landing on National’s Runway 33.The special helicopter routes are designed to give the military access to various military basesalong the Potomac River, said Michael McCormick, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University who specializes in air traffic control.

 

According toa person familiar with operations at the airport, who spoke on the condition of anonymitybecause of the ongoing investigation, conflicts between helicopters and jets often occur but are resolved with the helicopter swerving away or by the airliner circling and attempting a new landing approach.

 

The helicopter routes are meant to help “create as much certainty as you can in a three-dimensional safety environment,” said a former FAA official, whospoke on the condition of anonymityto discuss sensitive issues relating to the crash.

 

"They want you as far to the east, and as far away from the approach path, as possible,” the former official said. But questions have also been raised about whetherthere may also be structural problems at play— whether helicopter traffic over the Potomac is kept far enough away from the commercial planes coming in over the river so they can land on National’s Runway 33.

 

A 2021 report by the Government Accountability Office noted that “in airspace near Reagan National and the Potomac River, FAA further limits the maximum altitudes for helicopters where helicopter routes overlap with commercial passenger airplane operations to ensure the safety of all aircraft.”

 

Wednesday night, air traffic controllers were in communication with the military helicopter, with a pilot confirming he could see the airliner and would avoid it, according to radio communications archived by LiveATC.net.

The twin-jet Embraer ERJ 175 was heading south along the Potomac River corridor toward its planned landing at National at the time, flight tracker maps show. Just as the aircraft neared Arlington Memorial Bridge, however, a male voice in the cockpit alerted the tower they would have to “go around.” The plane took a sharp turn to the west, according to flight tracker maps of the aircraft’s path that night, and later landed safely at National at 8:16 p.m.

 

A spokesperson for Republic Airways said the company was reviewing The Post’s questions and the details of the incident and could not immediately comment. American Airlines did not respond to questions about Hart’s account of the diversion of its jet from Charlotte on Jan. 23, after the plane encountered a helicopter.

 

Hart, who works in real estate and lives in Rockville, Maryland, frequently takes regional jets in and out of National. “I’m on those jets all the time, so it hits home,” he said.“This was what was happening to us, though we didn’t crash, thank God. It’s terrible.”

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission consolidated their cooperation on the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI), marking the successful conclusion of negotiations and clearing the way for development to begin.

EuroQCI is an advanced network that aims to protect everything from personal data to Europe’s critical infrastructure, using proven principles of quantum physics.

 

EuroQCI will enhance the security of critical government data by leveraging quantum key distribution (QKD), a technology that uses the principles of quantum physics to detect any attempt at interception.

The system will also protect Europe’s vital infrastructure – from power grids that supply our electricity to emergency services that protect our communities in times of crises.

This marks a significant step toward meeting the EU’s Digital Decade target of being at the forefront of quantum capabilities by 2030.

 

The technology works through two complementary systems. On Earth, it leverages existing fibre-optic internet cables enhanced with quantum security features.

In space, ESA is leading the development of a satellite constellation through its Optical and Quantum Communications – Scylight programme to expand the reach of the QKD secure network across Europe and beyond.

 

This effort is being advanced through ESA’s Security And cryptoGrAphic mission (SAGA), which will demonstrate and validate space-based quantum technologies in orbit.

In partnership with an industrial consortium led by SES Techcom and the European Commission, ESA is also supporting the development of Eagle-1, the first satellite for this space-based QKD system, scheduled for launch in 2026.

 

The project has received strong backing from all 27 EU Member States, demonstrating its importance for Europe’s future.

The European Commission launched its first implementation phase for EuroQCI in 2023, with the next milestone focused on its gradual integration into IRIS², Europe’s new secure satellite constellation.

 

“Today, we celebrate the successful conclusion of negotiations and the signing of this Agreement, a pivotal step forward that highlights the power of partnership in achieving ambitious goals,” said Josef Aschbacher, ESA’s Director General.

“Through our collaboration with the European Commission and Member States, we will ensure EuroQCI sets the global standard for secure and innovative quantum communication.

ESA will lead the Contracting, Design, and Qualification authority, developing EuroQCI to protect critical information and assets, and spearheading R&D activities in space-based quantum technologies.”

 

Laurent Jaffart, ESA’s Director of Connectivity and Secure Communications, said:

“By integrating quantum-based systems into existing infrastructures, EuroQCI will create a secure communication layer resistant to emerging cyber threats, advancing Europe’s cybersecurity strategy and strengthening our leadership in quantum technologies.”

 

Roberto Viola, the European Commission’s Director-General of Communications Networks, Content and Technology, said:

“Yesterday, the Commission had announced the Competitiveness Compass, the key policy agenda for the coming years, which includes maintaining a leading position in quantum technologies.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image highlights part of the São Francisco River in eastern Brazil.

With a course of 2914 km, the São Francisco is the fourth largest river system in South America and the largest river located wholly in Brazil.

It is also sometimes called the “river of national unity” because its basin extends across several Brazilian states.

 

Rising 730 m above sea level in the southwestern state of Minas Gerais, the river flows northerly to the state of Bahia.

It then flows to the Atlantic Ocean, where it empties between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe. Several hydroelectric plants along the river’s course provide power throughout northeastern Brazil.

The image shows in light blue the course of the river in northern Bahia, where it forms the extensive Sobradinho Reservoir.

A combination of sediment, decomposing plants and the presence of algae and microorganisms give the water its bright hue.

 

Covering an area of about 4200 sq km, Sobradinho is one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, and can hold more than 34 billion cubic metres of water, although its water level varies with seasonal changes.

This false-colour image has been processed using Sentinel-2’s near-infrared channel, which highlights vegetation in red and helps us better distinguish between areas with vegetation and areas without.

We can see where vegetation has been cleared away for logging, farming and land cultivation. Cities, roads and agricultural fields appear in different shades of brown.

 

A distinctive feature in this image is the area of circles at the bottom centre.

These were created by a central-pivot irrigation system, where a long water pipe rotates around a well at the centre of each plot.

The varying colours show different types of crop, or different stages of growth.

 

Copernicus Sentinel-2 is designed to monitor changing lands, including crop type and health.

The mission’s frequent revisits over the same area and high spatial resolution also enable close monitoring of changes in inland water bodies.

Ukrainian fighter confesses troops raped and tortured Russian civilians(GRAPHIC VIDEO, it doesn't work)

A Ukrainianmilitary unit raped and killed eight women and murdered at least 14 other civilians in the villageof Russkoye Porechnoye, a captured Ukrainian soldier has admitted during interrogation by Russian investigators.

 

Russkoye Porechnoye,home to around 300 people, fell under Kiev’s control in August last year during a Western-backed incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region. Russian forces liberated the settlement earlier this month, where they discovered decomposing corpses of civilians stashed in basements throughout the village.

 

On Friday, the Russian Investigative Committee released new evidence on the massacre, including footage of the interrogation of Yevgeny Fabrisenko, a soldier with the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade. Fabrisenko stated that he was deployed to the village on September 28 alongside his immediate commander and two other soldiers.

 

According to Fabrisenko, theircompany commander explicitly ordered them to “cleanse”the village of Russian civilians. The unit remained in Russkoye Porechnoye until October 3, during which they raided homes, raped women, and executed men on sight. Those who resisted were tortured and killed he admitted.

 

In several gruesome videos released by the investigators on Friday, Russian troops can be seen inspecting the village and trying to count the heavily-decomposed and mutilated bodies they found in multiple cellars.

 

Fabrisenko described how he and his comrades raped eight women before forcing them to their knees and shooting them in the back of the head.

 

In total, theunit killed nearly two dozen civilians, including eight women, 11 men, andthree elderly women, he said. Most victims were shot, while six were forced into a basement andkilled with a hand grenadeby the team’s leader.

 

Fabrisenko was captured by Russian forces in late November after he got lost while relocating between positions and accidentally ran into a Russian reconnaissance unit.

 

The Ukrainian serviceman has fully confessed to his crimes and now faces a life sentence on multiple charges, including terrorism and rape.

 

Moscow has strongly condemned the massacre in Russkoye Porechnoye, with senior officials suggesting the killings could constitute genocide.

 

Earlier this month, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the incident further confirmed the “terrorist and neo-Nazi essence of the Kiev regime.”

NORAD Sends Fighter Patrols to Monitor Russian Military Flights in the Arctic

U.S. Air Force F-35s and Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18s conducted combat air patrols in response to Russian military aircraft operating in the Arctic early this week, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a news release Jan. 30.

NORAD also said it sent two U.S. Air Force F-16s from Alaska to Greenland, “exercising its standard agreement with Greenland to forward posture NORAD presence in the Arctic.”

 

The Russian aircraft were operating in international airspace and did not enter the Alaskan or Canadian Air Defense Identification Zones or sovereign airspace, NORAD said in its release.

The command did not identify the type of Russian planes, with a spokesperson citing “operational security” concerns, but NORAD indicated they were not seen as a threat.

 

“Under its mission of maintaining comprehensive domain awareness in the Arctic, NORAD launched a combat air patrol from its Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) to the northern region of Canada, and an air patrol from its Alaskan NORAD Region (ANR) off the coast of the Alaska/Yukon border, to further track the activity,” NORAD said of the Russian aircraft.

 

The patrols occurred Jan. 28, a NORAD spokesperson told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

The Canadian patrol comprised two Canadian CF-18s and one KC-135 refueling aircraft, and the U.S. patrol consisted of two U.S. F-35s, one E-3 Sentry AWACS airborne warning and command and control aircraft, and two KC-135s.

 

On Jan. 28, an F-35 crashed at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. The pilot ejected from the F-35, was taken to a local military hospital, and has been released.

The incident was unrelated to the NORAD activity that occurred on the same day, a spokesperson for the command said.

 

NORAD did not specify where in Greenland its F-16s deployed, but the territory does host the northernmost U.S. military installation, Pituffik Space Base, a Space Force missile warning and satellite control site.

Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base, dates back to the 1950s when it was established as a Strategic Air Command base during the Cold War before transitioning to its early warning missile mission.

Four Air Force F-35s deployed to Greenland in January 2023.

 

President Donald Trump has said he wants to buy Greenland from Denmark because of its strategic importance in the Arctic. Denmark has rebuffed that request.

“NORAD employs a layered defense network of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars, and fighter aircraft to detect and track aircraft and inform appropriate actions.

NORAD remains ready to employ a number of response options in defense of North America,” the command added in his latest statement.

Ukrainian army faces ‘desertion crisis’ – Guardian

Kiev’s troops are abandoning their posts due to internal disarray and Russia’s battlefield advantage, the outlet has reported

 

The Ukrainian military is grappling with a significant desertion crisis which could worsen if the conflict with Russia continues, The Guardian reported on Friday. The issue has recently garnered international attention following reports of mass desertions from aFrench-trainedUkrainian brigade.

 

The Guardian interviewed two Ukrainian soldiers who had abandoned their posts, citingdisorganization within the armyand the overwhelming strength of Russian forces. One of them described chaotic command structures and a lack of essential supplies, while the other highlighted the psychological toll of facing a well-equipped adversary.

 

There is a pervasive fear among potential recruits, a stereotype that “if you join up, you will be dead in five minutes,” Andrey Grebenuyk, a sergeant major of an infantry battalion, told the publication.

 

The 155th Mechanized Brigade, trained in France, has faced scrutiny due to reports of mass desertions and internal mismanagement. Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation launched a probe into the allegations last week.

 

In response to the recruitment shortfall, the Ukrainian parliament is debating measures to attract more recruits. Reforms are being finalized to encourage 18- to 25-year-olds, currently exempt from mobilization, to enlist voluntarily.

 

Ukraine’s commissioner for protecting service members’ rights, Olga Reshetilova, suggested to The Guardian that therecruitment crisis could be alleviatedif Kiev’s allies deployed their own troops. European leaders have been discussing the potential deployment of a peacekeeping force to Ukraine, contingent upon an eventual ceasefire agreement with Russia.

 

Earlier this month, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky suggested that at least 200,000 allied troops might be necessary to ensure a peace deal is secure. However, a NATO deployment could provoke a significant response from Moscow.

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously cautioned against such an “extremely dangerous step,” warning that it could potentially lead to “a global catastrophe.” Putin has also dismissed the idea that Western troops could alter the situation on the battlefield.

 

Aleksey Zhuravlev, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma’s Defense Committee, stated last week that if the US-backed military bloc or an individual member country sends troops to Ukraine, Russia could announce a new stage of mobilization as it would see the move as direct aggression.

 

Zhuravlev went on to stress that Russia had enough reserves and resources to respond to any potential NATO deployment.

Space mining company AstroForge identifies asteroid target for Odin launch next month

A U.S. asteroid-mining company has announced the target space rock for its upcoming test mission.

California-based AstroForge has identified asteroid 2022 OB5 as the destination for its Mission 2 spacecraft, named Odin, which is set to launch next month, SpaceNews reports.

The Odin spacecraft will be flying as a secondary payload aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which will send Intuitive Machines' IM-2 lander toward the moon.

 

Odin will separate shortly after the Falcon 9 upper stage fires its engines to head for the moon.

The launch window for the mission opens no earlier than Feb. 26.

 

2022 OB5 is a near-Earth asteroid that is up to 328 feet (100 meters) in diameter and could be metallic.

It will take Odin around 300 days to reach the small celestial body, when the small spacecraft will make a flyby to gather information about the asteroid and its suitability for mining.

This is preparation for more daring missions in the future.

 

"Odin's role is to gather critical imagery of the target asteroid, preparing the way for our next mission, Vestri, which will aim to land on the asteroid and begin extraction," according to AstroForge.

Vestri will also be on a rideshare mission with Intuitive Machines' IM-3 lunar lander, potentially later in 2025.

 

AstroForge was founded in January 2022 with plans to extract resources from asteroids and provide a sustainable solution for mining precious metals.

Its first mission, Brokkr-1, reached orbit in April 2023, but the company was unable to activate the cubesat's prototype refinery technology.

SpaceNews states that AstroForge has signed a contract with Stoke Space for several launches on the in-development Nova rocket for future, ambitious mining missions.

Russian drone silences Ukrainian communications (MOD VIDEO)

 

A precision strike has disabled an antenna vital for Kiev’s military in Kursk Region, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow

 

The Russian Defense Ministry released a video on Friday, showing a drone attack on a Ukrainian military communications antenna in Kursk Region. Kiev’s troops invaded the Russian region in August and have suffered heavy losses trying to hold on to part of the territory, according to the ministry.

 

Filmed from a first person view (FPV) drone, the footage shows the aircraft darting towards a dish mounted on a metal frame tower. The ministry said the strikedisrupted communicationsfor Ukrainian forces in the vicinity.

 

According to the ministry, the operation was executed by troops from theRubicon military research center, a specialized drone warfare unit focused on developing new battlefield tactics involving unmanned aircraft.

 

Ukraine launched the incursion into Kursk Region last August. Kiev officials said they intended to use the captured territory as a bargaining chip in future peace talks with Russia.

 

Moscow has countered that the operation diminishes the likelihood of negotiations, and accused Ukrainian troops of committing war crimes against Russian civilians.

 

According to the Russian military, the incursion has resulted in significant Ukrainian casualties, which it estimates at over 56,400 as of Friday.

Safety panel reports progress in Starliner investigation

Boeing and NASA are making “significant progress” on addressing issues seen on a test flight of the company’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft last year, an independent NASA safety panel says, although key problems with the spacecraft’s thrusters remain unresolved.

Paul Hill, a member of the Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP), said at a Jan. 30 public meeting that the committee was briefed on the status of the investigation into Starliner’s Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission recently.

That mission launched in June with NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams on board, but the spacecraft returned to Earth three months later uncrewed because of agency concerns about the performance of spacecraft thrusters.

 

“NASA reported that significant progress is being made regarding Starliner CFT’s post-flight activities,” he said. “Integrated NASA-Boeing teams have begun closing out flight observations and in-flight anomalies.”

He didn’t elaborate on the specific issues that the teams had closed out but stated that it did not include the thrusters, several of which shut down during the spacecraft’s approach to the station.

The propulsion system also suffered several helium leaks.

 

“The program anticipates the propulsive system anomalies will remain open,” he said, “pending ongoing test campaigns.”

He added there are teams studying the root cause of the thruster problems, developing recommendations for changes to future missions and assessing “technical and organizational factors” that may have played a role.

 

Hill said ASAP was satisfied with the progress and course of action by Boeing and NASA.

“The details shared by NASA gave us confidence that they are focusing on the right core issues and the related path to safely flying Starliner.”

While the ASAP meeting did not provide many technical details about the Starliner investigation, it was perhaps the most detailed public update into the investigation since Starliner’s return nearly five months ago.

Neither NASA nor Boeing have provided much information about the investigation since the landing.

 

The ASAP briefing did not discuss when Starliner might fly again, and whether it would be another test flight with or without crew on board or as a long-duration crew-rotation mission.

“The timing and configuration of Starliner’s next flight will be determined once a better understanding of Boeing’s path to system certification is established,” NASA stated in October.

“NASA is keeping options on the table for how best to achieve system certification, including windows of opportunity for a potential Starliner flight in 2025,” the agency stated then, but has not offered an update since then on where Starliner might fit into the station manifest.

 

Boeing announced Jan. 23 that it expected to take another charge against earnings in the fourth quarter of 2024 because of Starliner that could be in hundreds of millions of dollars.

The company didn’t give more details during a Jan. 28 earnings release and analyst call, and hasn’t yet submitted its 10-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that would include that information.

 

Mark Nappi, the Boeing vice president who was Starliner program manager during the CFT mission, is no longer in that position.

Nappi appeared on a panel Jan. 30 at the SpaceCom conference here in the role of senior program advisor for space exploration initiatives at Boeing, noting the change was part of longstanding plans by him to retire from the company in February.

 

The panel, on public private partnerships, only briefly touched on Starliner.

Asked what he would have changed about the structure of the commercial crew program to improve the spacecraft’s cost and schedule performance, he pointed to requirements.

“I think we would go back and revisit those requirements and make them more efficient.”

President Donald Trump is wasting no time in reaching out to Venezuela in hopes of a new bilateral deal and better relations.

 

On Thursday night, Trump met with his new Presidential Envoy for Special Missions Ric Grenell in the Oval Office. Grenell departed Washington, D.C., for Venezuela earlier today. He is expected to arrive shortly in Caracas.

 

According to a source close to the White House, Trump has empowered Grenell to "do a deal" that breaks the logjam in relations between the two countries. But the specific purpose of Grenell's trip is to negotiate an orderly return of Venezuelan nationals illegally in the U.S.

 

Relations between the U.S. and Venezuela have long been difficult and tense. Under President Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela shred any pretense of being a democracy. Maduro took power in 2013 after the death of strongman Hugo Chavez.

 

The Trump administration slapped harsh economic sanctions on the Maduro regime, blocking most of their oil shipments to the U.S. In 2020, the first Trump administration's Justice Department indicted Maduro and other associates for cocaine trafficking and "narco-terrorism."

 

During the 2024 election, Trump called Maduro a dictator, but suggested he was open to talks. After Trump's 2024 win, Maduro said he would seek a "new start" with the U.S.

 

Grenell is one of President Trump's closest confidantes. During his first term, Grenell served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany and later as acting DNI chief in the Cabinet. At the time of his nomination last year, Trump said Grenell would be tasked with handling Venezuela and North Korea.

 

Earlier this month, Trump tapped Grenell to lead administration efforts to deal with the recent California wildfires.

ATC told helo pilot that he could follow the jet in after confirmation that pilot had eyes on jet.

If helo was to be going into same runway, why was it not turning into the flightpath of the runway to line up?

Helo path was 90 degree with the jet for the most part and passing the lineup with the runway.

Plus I read that helo was higher than helo flight corridor.

Plus helo made corrections of flight path to "intercept" jet.

Pentagon staff have been downloading an early versionthe Chinese generative artificial intelligence model DeepSeek onto their workstations since the fall of 2024, according to Bloomberg. The Pentagon’sIT experts only moved to partially blockthe app's usage after its recent surge in popularity.

 

Earlier this month, the Chinese startup unveiled its latest open-source AI model, R1, which its creators claim has outperformed leading products from US developers, including OpenAI’s flagship o1, in some cases. The model’s accessibility – allowing anyone to download and run it on their own servers for free – has stirred the open-source community and triggered a sell-off of US tech stocks on Monday.

 

The Defense Information Systems Agency(DISA), which manages the Pentagon’s IT networks,moved to block access to the DeepSeekwebsite late on Tuesday due to multiple defense employees having used the latest AI chatbot for at least two days, Bloomberg reported on Thursday, citing unnamed US officials.

 

DISA experts are now assessing the extent of employees’ direct use of DeepSeek through web browsers. When accessed via the company’s website or its popular apps on the Apple App Store and Google Play, DeepSeek’sprivacy policy indicated that user data is stored on serversin China and governed under Chinese law.

 

Despite the restrictions, thousands of Pentagonemployeescontinue to use the Chinese-trained AI through the authorized web platform Ask Sage, which provides access to multiple models, including DeepSeek, hosted on its own US-based servers.

 

Some US military personnel downloaded an earlier version of DeepSeek onto their workstations as early as the fall of 2024, according to Bloomberg sources. At the time,the connection to China was allegedly “not evident” to Defense Department security teams, and the downloads did not raise immediate concerns. OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman has acknowledged that DeepSeek R1 is an “impressive model, particularly in terms of what they’re able to deliver for the price.” The Chinese startup claims it developed a competitive AI model without access to cutting-edge US chips for just $6 million.

 

US President Donald Trump, who has designated AI development as a top priority for his administration, called DeepSeek’s launch a “wake-up call” for the American AI industry. I think a top down track of the two aircraft would show the helo altering course INTO the plane. Just sayin'. A side view does not give a very good perspective of the aircraft tracks. If we have flight data combined with GPS, it should present a pretty clear indicator of how it went down. I bet it would show the helo altering it's flight path to intercept the plane. I would think that an increase in helo airspeed in order to intercept the plane is probably likely as well. You have to lead a moving target.
