Mexico’s president has confirmed that the six victims who were on the small medevac jet that crashed in a Philadelphia neighborhood Friday evening were Mexican citizens.

 

“I regret the death of six Mexicans in the plane crash in Philadelphia. The consular authorities are in permanent contact with the families,” Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on X Saturday morning.

Robert Santos decides to resign as US Census Bureau director midway through a 5-year term

Robert Santos, who emphasized inclusivity and outreach to overlooked communities, has decided to resign as director of the U.S. Census Bureau, midway through his five-year term and in the midst of planning for the 2030 census, which will determine political power and federal funding nationwide for another decade.

 

Santos, who was appointed by former Democratic President Joe Biden, said in a letter Thursday evening that he made the decision “after deep reflection.” Santos was sworn in as the bureau’s 26th director, and its first Hispanic leader, in 2022.

Scientists discover new, 3rd form of magnetism that may be the 'missing link' in the quest for superconductivity

Researchers have obtained the first conclusive evidence of an elusive third class of magnetism, called altermagnetism.

Their findings, published Dec. 11 in the journal Nature, could revolutionize the design of new high-speed magnetic memory devices and provide the missing puzzle piece in the development of better superconducting materials.

 

"We have previously had two well-established types of magnetism," study author Oliver Amin, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Nottingham in the U.K., told Live Science.

"Ferromagnetism, where the magnetic moments, which you can picture like small compass arrows on the atomic scale, all point in the same direction.

 

And antiferromagnetism, where the neighboring magnetic moments point in opposite directions — you can picture that more like a chessboard of alternating white and black tiles."

Electron spins within an electrical current must point in one of two directions and can align with or against these magnetic moments to store or carry information, forming the basis of magnetic memory devices.

 

Altermagnetic materials, first theorized in 2022, have a structure that sits somewhere in between. Each individual magnetic moment points in the opposite direction as its neighbor, as in an antiferromagnetic material.

But each unit is slightly twisted relative to this adjacent magnetic atom, resulting in some ferromagnetic-like properties.

 

Altermagnets, therefore, combine the best properties of both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials.

"The benefit of ferromagnets is that we have an easy way of reading and writing memory using these up or down domains," study co-author Alfred Dal Din, a doctoral student also at the University of Nottingham, told Live Science.

"But because these materials have a net magnetism, that information is also easy to lose by wiping a magnet over it."

 

Conversely, antiferromagnetic materials are much more challenging to manipulate for information storage. Because they have a net zero magnetism, however, information in these materials is much more secure and faster to carry.

"Altermagnets have the speed and resilience of an antiferromagnet, but they also have this important property of ferromagnets called time reversal symmetry breaking," Dal Din said.

 

This mind-bending property looks at the symmetry of objects moving forward and backward in time. "For example, gas particles fly around, randomly colliding and filling up the space," Amin said. "If you rewind time, that behavior looks no different."”

This means the symmetry is conserved. However, because electrons possess both a quantum spin and a magnetic moment, reversing time — and, therefore, the direction of travel — flips the spin, meaning the symmetry is broken.

"If you look at those two electron systems — one where time is progressing normally and one where you're in rewind — they look different, so the symmetry is broken," Amin explained. "This allows certain electrical phenomena to exist."

 

The team — led by Peter Wadley, a professor of physics at the University of Nottingham — used a technique called photoemission electron microscopy to image the structure and magnetic properties of manganese telluride, a material formerly believed to be antiferromagnetic.

"Different aspects of the magnetism become illuminated depending on the polarization of the X-rays we choose," Amin said.

Circularly polarized light revealed the different magnetic domains created by the time reversal symmetry breaking, while horizontally or vertically polarized X-rays allowed the team to measure the direction of the magnetic moments throughout the material.

By combining the results of both experiments, the researchers created the first-ever map of the different magnetic domains and structures within an altermagnetic material.

 

With this proof of concept in place, the team fabricated a series of altermagnetic devices by manipulating the internal magnetic structures through a controlled thermal cycling technique.

Police make 'significant' find after drone spotted 'something that was suspicious'

(Manchester) - A massive haul of cannabis worth thousands of pounds was seized in a police raid at a mill. Police chiefs said a 'well-planned set-up' was uncovered inside, with a total of 658 plants found in total.

Six vacuum-packed bags filled with cannabis were also recovered, with police saying the drugs were 'ready for distribution into communities'.

 

Officers in Radcliffe, Bury, swooped to execute a warrant at the mill on Milltown Street in Radcliffe at around 8am on Friday morning.

The raid came after police had previously chased a suspect over the land on an earlier occasion.

 

In a statement, GMP said: "Using the specialist drone unit for a wider view, it enabled them to spot something that was suspicious, which ultimately led to the significant find.

What was uncovered was precisely 658 plants and six vacuum packed bags ready for distribution into communities."

Police said they now want the mill closed.

 

Inspector Gareth Edwards said: "On this occasion the find boiled down to some luck, but working collaboratively with key resources we have at our disposal alongside the council and the fire service through joint agency work, we are looking to prevent further offences at the location.

"We are continuing to conduct enquiries to find those responsible with a view to closing the mill until it is deemed safe, as the wider impact this had on the environment in terms of waste is another serious concern.

 

“Our work to tackle drugs supply is continuing at pace and we only know too well the devastating consequences drugs has within communities of Bury and across Greater Manchester as well as further afield.

Drone highlights Maui flooding after powerful storm rakes Hawaiian islands

A powerful storm in Hawaii this week that left flights grounded, trees felled and vacation beach plans ruined also left a trail of flooding in its wake.

Drone video from the county of Maui released Friday shows some of the flooding aftermath on the south part of the island after as much as 6-10 inches of rain fell Thursday.

 

"South Kīhei Road’s history as a natural wetland once allowed it to receive rainwater and manage seasonal runoff from Haleakalā," the county of Maui said.

"Urban development, however, encroached into these wetlands, reducing the land’s natural flood control and making flooding experienced by development more common.

Despite these changes, the area retains its natural flood-prone state during heavy rains."

 

The island reported multiple water main breaks, affecting drinking supply in some neighborhoods.

All Maui County pools, sports playing fields, tennis and basketball courts and stadiums, including the Waiehu Golf Course, remain closed due to storm-related impacts, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

 

Aside from the heavy rains, powerful winds gusting over 60 mph in the lowlands left over 50,000 people without power and multiple trees down.

That included this unlucky driver in Honolulu who came to find a large tree had smashed into his rear windshield.

 

At least one rock slide was also reported on Maui, with a giant boulder blocking a travel lane of the Kahekili Highway.

Strong winds were seen partially blowing the shingles off a roof in Kaneohe, along the windward coast of Oahu.

 

Hawaii issued a ground stop for all interisland flights on Thursday for a few hours as the storms raged, with four flights being diverted to Lihue, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.

Boaters fared no better as the National Weather Service in Honolulu issued multiple marine warnings throughout the storm advising of strong winds, lightning and even potential waterspouts.

 

But even boats docked on shore were not immune from the storm impacts.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports a 65-foot commercial catamaran broke free of its mooring on the north side of Honolua Bay in Maui early Friday morning and smashed into rocks, running around.

 

Maui firefighters were able to help safely get four crewmembers on board to shore. Another 38-foot boat ran aground onto a sand bottom near Maui’s Kihei.

The winds were even higher – reaching well beyond hurricane force – along the mountain peaks. A communications tower atop the summit of Maui's Haleakala around 10,000 feet recorded a gust of 120 mph.

NATO fighter jets were scrambled as Vladimir Putin unleashed a huge missile and drone blitz on Ukraine.

The savage barrage on Friday night killed six innocent Ukrainians after the bombs slammed into apartment buildings and neighbourhoods.

 

Russia launched 165 missiles and drones at Ukraine during air attacks on Saturday, the Ukrainian air force said.

Ukraine said it shot down 56 drones and redirected 61 Russian drones and redirected a "significant number" of missiles.

 

Putin used nuclear-capable bomber aircraft including Tu-95s and Tu-22s to unleash the Kh-22 missiles at Ukraine.

He also sent a wave of Iranian-supplied drones across the border as he tries to pummel the brave country into submission.

 

Nato scrambled its fighter jets in Poland in response to the scale of the attack near the alliance's eastern border.

It also prepared its anti-air defences in case missiles or drones passed into its airspace.

 

In Ukraine’s second city Kharkiv, a drone crashed in the Kholodnohirskyi residential district, killing one woman and leaving five injured, its mayor said.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has urged all illegal aliens residing in the United States to return home.

 

In a post on the X platform, Petro promised all those who leave the U.S. “productive loans” that he said will help return the country to prosperity.

 

He wrote:

I ask undocumented Colombians in the US to immediately leave their jobs in that country and return to Colombia as soon as possible.

Wealth is produced only by working people.

The Department of Social Prosperity, DPS, will seek to provide productive loans to returnees who enroll in its programs.

Let’s build social wealth in Colombia.

The suggestion comes less than a week after he was forced into a humiliating U-turn by Donald Trump.

 

After initially refusing to accept a deportation flight from the U.S. on the grounds that the “dignity” of his fellow citizens was being violated, Petro folded like a cheap suit when Trump threatened to impose tariffs and sanctions on those affiliated with the Colombian government.

 

“The Government of Colombia has agreed to all of President Trump’s terms, including the unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia returned from the United States, including on U.S. military aircraft, without limitation or delay,” Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

 

While Petro did not explicitly admit defeat, he acknowledged it by reposting the statement from Leavitt on his X profile.

Anger is brewing in South Fulton, Georgia, over how its mayor is spending taxpayer dollars.

On Tuesday, the South Fulton City Council approved an audit into how Mayor Khalid Kamau is tossing around city money and imposed new rules to control spending

Some context: On his website, the mayor, who calls himself Mayor Kobi, boasts that he is “America’s first Movement for Black Lives elected to public office.”

As noted by Politico, about 90 percent of the residents of South Fulton are black, which is the highest percentage of black residents in the nation.

And that was what mattered the most when Kamau was upbraided over city spending.

Among the spending that is being questioned are flights the mayor took without any of the required approvals, according to WSB-TV. Bank records indicate the mayor and one employee went to Patis in May. He took another employee to Africa in October. The trips cost taxpayers about $8,000,

Kamau walked out when questions were raised, but not before playing the race card, according to WSB-TV.

“I am so distressed and disappointed that the blackest city in one of the blackest states in the United States of America heading into Black History Month, we are tearing each other down,” Kobi said.

Councilwoman Helen Willis, who like the mayor, is black, was not intimidated.

“We’re not tearing you down; you took your black behind over to Africa for 20 days and didn’t tell anybody,” she responded.

Willis said she was tired of the mayor answering fiscal questions with lectures on racial solidarity.

“Mayor, I really was going to let this go, but I can’t continue to sit here and allow you to make it seem like we’re the villains, and you’re the victim,” Willis said, according to Fox News.

“Now those cameras are in the back of the room, not because of us. We would love to come to a meeting and just go through this agenda, have a professional meeting. And do the business of the people and go home. But it was you who wanted to go sit around and call us the ‘Blackest city’ and say we want to tear each other down,” she said.

She said the “blackest city” comment was “disrespectful,” adding “We keep telling him that.”

Resident Reshard Snellings said he attended the meeting to get some answers about spending on travel, food and other items that, all told, comes to about $26,000, according to WSB-TV.

“I wanted to find out if taxpayers paid for this trip,” he said, “We should not be asked to go without something so that our elected officials can travel all over the globe.”

Wednesday morning, as the Supreme Court heard arguments in a major abortion case, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke at an abortion rights rally outside the Court. One line of his remarks swiftly generated outrage among conservatives and received a rare public rebuke from Chief Justice John Roberts.

 

I’m going to quote that line briefly, then I’m going to quote it again in context below, because the full context does suggest that Roberts may have misinterpreted Schumer’s remarks somewhat, even if it does not render the statement innocuous. However you interpret Schumer’s statement, it is a reflection of a much deeper rot within American democracy.

 

'' The Schumer quote that triggered Roberts’s reply is this: “I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.” ''

 

“Gorsuch” and “Kavanaugh,” of course, refer to Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh — President Trump’s two appointees to the Supreme Court, whose confirmations were opposed by nearly all Senate Democrats.

 

The conservative blowback against Schumer was swift and intense. The National Review’s John Hirschauer labeled Schumer a “thug.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Schumer’s remarks were, at best, “astonishing, reckless and completely irresponsible.” President Trump weighed in in his distinctly Trumpy way.

Man agrees to plead guilty for flying drone that damaged firefighting aircraft in LA wildfire

The pilot of a drone that crashed into a firefighting plane, leaving a gaping hole and grounding the aircraft during the deadly Palisades Fire in Los Angeles, has agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor count of unsafely operating a drone, federal authorities said Friday.

Peter Tripp Akemann faces up to one year in prison, and a judge will determine his sentence, acting U.S. attorney Joseph McNally said.

As part of the plea agreement, he will have to complete 150 hours of wildfire-related community service and pay $65,000 in restitution for the damage to the plane, McNally said.

 

Akemann appeared in court Friday and will remain out of jail under court supervision during his case. He has not yet entered his plea.

Authorities say Akemann launched the drone from the top of a parking structure in Santa Monica on Jan. 9 and flew it more than 1.5 miles toward the Palisades Fire before losing sight of it.

It then crashed with the Super Scooper that was carrying two firefighters. The planes can scoop 1,500 gallons (6,000 liters) of water in just seconds.

 

The wind-driven blaze in the upscale Pacific Palisades began Jan. 7, destroying or damaging nearly 8,000 homes, businesses and other structures and killing at least 12 people.

Drone operations were prohibited in the area at the time due to the firefight. The conflagration was fueled by dry Santa Ana winds and has scorched at least 36 square miles (94 square kilometers) of land.

It was 98% contained as of Friday.

 

In a statement handed out to the media, defense attorney Glen Jonas said Akemann was “deeply sorry for the mistake he made” and “accepts responsibility for his grave error in judgment.”

Federal authorities emphasized Friday it was the responsibility of drone owners to know the rules, and there would be consequences for breaking them, especially as Los Angeles gears up to host several major events in coming years, including the World Cup, the Super Bowl and the Olympics.

 

“The FAA has very strict guidelines about registering drones and where drones can be flown.

The onus is on the pilot, if firefighters are putting out a fire with aircraft that should be a clue,” said Akil Davis, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.

The Super Scooper, which was owned by the government of Quebec, was grounded for several days. The pilot was able to land the aircraft despite a hole in the left wing caused by the collision with the drone.

 

Davis said there was no evidence Akemann intentionally caused the collision.

“Lack of common sense and ignorance of your duty as a drone pilot will not shield you from criminal charges,” he said.

 

The fire in the hilly Los Angeles neighborhood, home to Hollywood stars like Jamie Lee Curtis and Billy Crystal who lost houses in the fire, forced thousands of people from their homes, and knocked out power to tens of thousands.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire. Officials have placed the origin of blaze behind a home on Piedra Morada Drive, which sits above a densely wooded arroyo.

Another wind-whipped fire that started the same day in Altadena, a community about 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Pacific Palisades, killed at least 17 people and destroyed or damaged more than 10,000 homes and other buildings.

 

The Santa Ana winds have turned seasonal wildfires into infernos that have leveled neighborhoods in and around Los Angeles, where there has been no significant rainfall in more than eight months.

Interim D.C. U.S. attorney Edward R. Martin, Jr., on Friday dismissed about 30 federal prosecutors who have worked on Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot cases over the past four years, undertaking a housecleaning of the top prosecutor’s office in Washington, while preparing to extend the office’s scrutiny to top Democratic leaders and former Justice Department officials, people close to Martin said.

The prosecutors were on probationary status after being converted to full-time from shorter-term positions after Election Day under circumstances the Trump administration is investigating, according to documents from Martin and acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove that were emailed around 5 p.m. and viewed by The Washington Post.

 

In his first 11 days in office, Martin, 54, has moved quickly to align the office with President Donald Trump’s political views — and drawn significant criticism in the process. Since being appointed on Jan. 20, Martin has ordered top supervisors in the office to investigate their colleagues’ handling of the Capitol riot prosecutions in the wake of Trump’s mass pardons and threatened subordinates who disclose or criticize his actions.

And he appeared to set his sights on scrutinizing the nation’s top elected Democrat, sending what he called a “letter of inquiry” to Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-New York) about his quickly walked-back statement in a March 2020 rally that two of Trump’s recently nominated Supreme Court justices, Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh, would “pay the price” for a vote against abortion rights.

 

“We take threats against public officials very seriously. I look forward to your cooperation,” Martin wrote Schumer in a Jan. 21 letter obtained by The Post.

 

Martin’s actions are likely to be welcomed by Trump and allies, who assert they were unfairly targeted by the past administration. But career prosecutors who have served under presidents of both parties say Martin is politicizing the office and potentially breaking with 50 years of Justice Department policy and practice intended to shield criminal prosecutions from political considerations. They warn that an exodus of veteran prosecutors will threaten public safety and national security, leaving a more pliant institution that could enable Trump’s avowed desire to punish his foes in a second term.

 

Friday’s notifications went out to the people being terminated who served in the office’s now-disbanded Capitol siege prosecution section, according to four people and documents viewed by The Post. The cuts amount to about 8 percent of the office’s prosecutors. Combined with a recently announced freeze on hiring and promotions, the openings will have impacts across the office’s civil, appellate, Superior Court and violent crime divisions, where some prosecutors had been previously reassigned.

 

In a memorandum dated Friday, acting deputy attorney general Emil Bove directed the termination of the prosecutors, characterizing their hiring as a “subversive” action by the Biden administration that hindered Martin’s ability to staff the office and “to faithfully implement” Trump’s agenda.

 

“I will not tolerate subversive personnel actions by the previous Administration at any U.S. attorney’s office,” Bove said, adding that it would be appropriate to redirect personnel resources for new hires. The memo did not acknowledge that the administration has imposed a hiring and promotions freeze.

 

An email sent by Martin notified recipients to retain all documents relating to “personnel decisions regarding attorneys hired to support casework” regarding the Capitol riot, which the memo said is now under investigation pursuant to Trump’s executive order targeting the “weaponization” of law enforcement and intelligence agencies against him.

The dismissals came after James R. McHenry III, the acting attorney general, earlier this week fired members of special counsel Jack Smith’s team that prosecuted Trump; meanwhile, the FBI is considering a mass purge of agents involved in investigations of Trump and the Capitol riot. Separately, Martin has ordered an internal review of prosecutors’ handling of some Jan. 6 prosecutions, focusing on one of the most heavily litigated counts in the investigation that President Donald Trump has called a “witch hunt” against him.

More than a dozen current and former D.C. U.S. prosecutors contacted about Martin condemned the actions.

 

“Politics above all, that’s what this Department of Justice is about,” former assistant U.S. attorney Ashley Akers told MSNBC after resigning last week. “The message it sends is, ‘Adhere to the president and the will of the president, or you’ll be fired.’ And second, it shows a lack of independence at the Department of Justice.”

Martin is the first U.S. attorney for D.C. in at least 50 years not to have served as a judge or federal prosecutor,posing what former U.S. officials said is an extraordinary challenge as he oversees roughly 360 prosecutors responsible for investigating current and former members of Congress and the executive branch, prosecuting key national security and international crimes, and enforcing all D.C. felony laws.

 

Martin and the U.S. attorney’s office declined requests for interviews this week. But allies said that after Trump campaigned on vows to seek “retribution” against political enemies, Martin is in position to seek out “accountability” and evidence to back Trump’s unsubstantiated claims that criminal charges against him were made to damage him politically.

 

Martin seeks to learn, for example, whether prosecutors or senior Justice Department officials were politically motivated to punish Trump or supporters when they charged more than 250 riot defendants with felony obstruction of Congress’s certification of the 2020 election. Those decisions began under career prosecutors and Trump’s first term-appointees, and were upheld by nearly all judges to review them before the Supreme Court said the law could only be applied to those who seek to interfere with physical evidence.

 

Martin’s “instructions on 1512 are just the beginning. He’s going to find the origins of the legal theory and the purveyors of it, and follow through accordingly,” said a Trump legal adviser close to Martin, who referred to the obstruction statute by its section number is U.S. code and spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about Martin’s plans publicly.

People “are going to learn the hard way that there’s going to be accountability for a politicized and weaponized Justice Department,” said Mike Davis, another friend of Martin and conservative Trump legal adviser whom Donald Trump Jr. has called “the tip of the spear” defending his father from “corrupt Democrat” prosecutors.

 

Martin’s moves so far in office also appear aligned with the aims of Trump Office of Management Budget Director Russell Vought, who has stated he wants to make civil servants want to quit. Martin served as deputy policy director for the Republican National Convention’s 2024 platform committee under Vought, an architect of Project 2025, a conservative effort to expand presidential power and make the attorney general more loyal to the White House. The president tapped Martin in December to serve as Vought’s chief of staff on his return as director of Office of Management and Budget before an 11th-hour move to the prosecutor post.

Former colleagues said that Martin’s affability and zeal, along with his combustibility and an ideological edge, were evident to those who worked with him.

 

“He is one of the hardest-working candidates I’ve ever seen in my life,” John Hancock, who would later take over as Missouri GOP chairman from Martin, said in 2010.

“I like Ed,” former state Democratic Party chairman Michael Kelley said in the same Martin profile. “But working with Ed is like working with a lit firecracker. It’s gonna explode; you just don’t know when.”

Martin has long found himself at the center of political controversy. In 2007, Martin abruptly resigned without explanation as chief of staff to then-Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt (R). The office was entangled in a secrecy dispute, denying that its emails were subject to the state’s open records law and claiming that some emails didn’t exist.

 

But backups surfaced. And they showed Martin using his state email account to urge political allies to attack Blunt’s opponent in the governor’s race, and to criticize a judge nominated by Blunt to the state Supreme Court.

 

A staff lawyer Martin fired for advising Blunt’s staff that their emails were public records later sued and won a judgment for defamation and wrongful termination, costing taxpayers $2 million in legal expenses. Blunt dropped his reelection bid.

 

“There was not a guiding set of principles behind anything Ed Martin pursued, because it became apparent he would lie, cheat, and steal, and destroy me and others to try to get away with an obvious illegality with erasing those public records,” the staff lawyer, Scott Eckersley, told The Post this week. He called Martin “a dangerous man who is really governed by emotion and by whatever he wants in that moment.”

The episode didn’t sink Martin. After losing bids for Congress and Missouri attorney general, he chaired the state’s Republican Party, then led Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum. By his second day in office in D.C., Martin told staffers he expected to serve as Trump’s permanent U.S. attorney, getting ahead of any White House announcement and contradicting his stated expectation days earlier, according to five people in attendance or briefed on the meeting.

Martin also replaced the office’s experienced top assistant U.S. attorney with a career prosecutor and supervisor who served as a GOP Senate staffer. He eliminated the Capitol siege prosecution unit and removed its chief, The Post has reported, and froze hiring and promotions.

 

Martin also tasked two other top leaders, the heads of its federal criminal division and of its fraud, public corruption and civil rights section, to lead a fast-tracked review of prosecutors’ handling of Capitol riot prosecutions. Ordering those senior supervisors to investigate colleagues puts them in a difficult position, and many are watching for Martin’s next moves.

A devout Catholic raised in central New Jersey, Martin graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, earned a philosophy degree at Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and earned degrees in law and ethics from St. Louis University. After a year clerking for a federal judge in Kansas City, Martin launched his legal career at a large law firm, Bryan Cave, and later opened his own firm.

 

In 2018, Martin moved his wife and four children to Great Falls, a wealthy Northern Virginia suburb west of the capital, where he ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

 

Whatever his electoral setbacks, Martin has amassed influence by extending Schlafly’s legacy and becoming a right-wing radio show host and podcaster whose shoot-from-the-lip, wrecking-ball style recalls Stephen K. Bannon or Alex Jones. Like them, Martin has methodically denigrated the investigations into Trump, extolled Jan. 6 riot defendants and attacked the criminal justice system — especially in Washington.

“Wow, what a disappointment to have my email yesterday to you all was leaked almost immediately. Again, personally insulting and professionally unacceptable. I guess I have learned my lesson,” he emailed staff on Tuesday, the second time in a week he had made such a complaint, according to copies viewed by or read to The Post.

 

In this week’s note, Martin accused Akers, the prosecutor who just left the office, of “bad-mouthing our work (and me!).” Akers, who declined to speak to The Post afterward, said in cable news interviews that it was “appalling” that Martin advocated for members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers extremist groups by successfully urging a judge to undo their stay-away orders from Washington, and called his review of Jan. 6 cases a “wild goose chase.”

“We will need to make sure we have her records and emails,” Martin wrote.

Drone attack in Ethiopia's Afar region kills more than eight; residents accuse Djiboutian gov't

More than eight people were killed, and several others injured in a drone attack on 30 January 2025 in Afar Regional State, near the Ethiopia-Djibouti border, according to sources who spoke with Addis Standard.

The attack occurred in Siyaru Kebele, Elidar district, close to the border area.

A resident, who requested anonymity, said the attack happened “multiple times during the night” and resulted in “the deaths of more than eight people.” However, the exact number of casualties remains unclear, the resident added.

 

Among the deceased were a pregnant woman and two brothers, while at least four others sustained serious injuries, with two currently receiving treatment at Dubti General Hospital, located in Dubti town, Afar region, the resident said.

A list of those killed, as provided by the resident, includes Mohammed Aydahis, Gama Ali Orbis, Kako Ali Orbis, Ali Mohammed Kako, and Aysha Baddul Ali. Injured individuals include Mayram Mohammed Abdella, Fatuma Ali Hammed, and Ali Mohammed Ali. However, the resident noted that a full list of casualties has not been confirmed.

 

The resident alleged that the attack was carried out by the Djiboutian government, stating that it was “the second time in two months” that drones had targeted the area.

He further claimed the attack was launched “under the pretext of attacking FRUD,” referring to the Front for the Restoration of Unity and Democracy (FRUD), an armed group opposed to the Djiboutian government.

 

Another source, who also spoke with Addis Standard, linked the attack to ongoing tensions involving FRUD.

The source said Djiboutian authorities “claim FRUD fighters are stationed in the border area” and alleged that the attack targeted the local population, either “under the pretext of attacking FRUD” or as part of an effort to “forcibly displace residents from the region.”

 

The Djiboutian League for Human Rights (LDDH), a human rights organization operating in the country, stated that the attack was even deadlier, claiming “14 people died, including four women,” and that several others, including “women and children,” were injured.

The organization alleged that the drones “continued to bomb the nomads’ camps all night,” leading to further casualties.

In its statement on 31 January 2025, the organization condemned the attack as a “war crime that deliberately targets Afar civilians” and questioned foreign support for Djibouti’s military, asking, “Until when will Turkey and China equip the Djibouti regime that kills poor nomads with killer drones?”

 

Tensions between the Djiboutian government and FRUD have escalated in recent years, with the group accused of carrying out attacks against security forces.

In October 2022, Djibouti’s Ministry of Defense reported that seven soldiers were killed in an attack on the Tadjourah Regiment.

The ministry stated that FRUD fighters had “terrorized and looted people from remote areas” and vowed that “the pursuit is underway” to capture those responsible.

 

At the time, the Ethiopian government condemned the attack as “barbaric and cowardly” and expressed its “full readiness” to support Djibouti in addressing security threats.

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later announced that it had “secured the release” of six Djiboutian soldiers held hostage by FRUD, stating that the handover was conducted in cooperation with the Afar regional government. AS

The interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia may have his sights set on taking some form of legal action against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) over widely criticized remarks he made about a pair of U.S. Supreme Court justices that sounded to many like a threat.

 

On Friday, Edward R. Martin, Jr. dismissed roughly 30 federal prosecutors who had been working on Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot cases over the past four years. The move is part of a broader effort to overhaul Washington’s top prosecutor’s office while preparing to expand its investigations to include leading Democratic figures and former Justice Department officials, sources close to the interim U.S. attorney told the Washington Post.

 

He also appeared determined to scrutinize the nation’s leading Democrat by sending what he called a “letter of inquiry” to Schumer regarding his eventually retracted remarks at a March 2020 rally, in which he claimed that two of Trump’s recently appointed Supreme Court justices, Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh, would “pay the price” if they ruled against Roe v. Wade.

 

“We take threats against public officials very seriously. I look forward to your cooperation,” Martin wrote Schumer in a Jan. 21 letter obtained by The Post.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A lawsuit filed in Henry County last week alleges that Evergy and other companies are responsible for toxic chemicals and carcinogens around their now defunct power plant near Montrose, Missouri.

 

The plaintiff, Bill Steward, appeared in Henry County Commissioners Court on Tuesday.

 

“I’ve abandoned my house. I don’t live there,” he told the commissioners. “It’s in my home, it’s in my cars, it’s in my water. It’s in the wells, and it needs to be stopped today. People are sick. My kids are sick. People that go out there and test and go around that lake get sick.”

 

What’s at the heart of the suit is a byproduct of coal-fired power plants called fly ash. The EPA says the powder is a carcinogen but can be used to make ready-mix concrete and other construction materials.

 

The suit says the Montrose plant would put their fly ash into unlined and uncovered ponds until 2020, when it continues to allege that they excavated more than 75,000 cubic yards of fly ash from the ponds and left it on the ground and in landfills at the site.

Court documents say that Evergy and the other defendants, “disturbed and failed to adequately manage fly ash at the Evergy Site, causing fly ash to migrate through air, soil and water to properties.”

 

“They don’t care about us,” Steward said.

 

“We’ve got Parkinson’s, we’ve got throat cancer, brain tumors we’ve got all these things going on and we’ve ignored it.”

 

County Commissioner Mark Larson agreed.

 

“This needs to be handled immediately,” he responded to Steward in Tuesday’s meeting.

 

“Because it’s not like it’s going to blow and go away or it’s going to disappear, it’s here.”

 

FOX4 obtained and confirmed testing results done around the Montrose plant in late 2024. The results from one sample of drinking water showed that the amount of Radium 226 and total radium exceeded the Missouri Department of Natural Resources default testing limit.

 

The environmental science and engineering firm also tested 15 soil samples from around the community and found that all of the samples exceeded the default testing limit for hexavalent chromium and lead, both toxic carcinogens. Some samples exceeded limits for arsenic, boron, cobalt and one exceeded the limit for selenium.

 

Evergy released a statement to FOX4 saying the following:

 

“We learned today of the discussions at the January 21st Henry County Commission meeting and the decision by the Davis R-12 School Board to close for the remainder of this week. The safety of the Henry County community, and all communities where Evergy operates, is our top priority. We are working to obtain and analyze the test results that were discussed at the meeting and we have reached out to the Commission and school district to begin a dialogue and better understand their concerns.

 

The Montrose site conducts all required groundwater testing and is in full compliance with all state and federal regulations. Additionally, the site has a dust control plan that includes twice-daily visual observations to confirm the absence of dust leaving the property and compliance with our dust mitigation actions. As recently as August 2024, MDNR inspected our site and confirmed it is in compliance.

 

Many of the chemicals discussed at the Henry County Commission are frequently found in materials commonly used in and around Missouri. For example, these materials can be found in gypsum which is frequently used in agriculture, as well as in cement and paint thinner. Additionally, many of these chemicals are naturally occurring in the soil and rocks.

 

We have contacted MDNR to ensure they are aware of the issue. We are committed to working with the Henry County Commissioners, school district and local community to understand the situation and will continue to make the safety of our communities our top priority.”

In certain environmental conditions, these attachments can undergo leaching. Notably, inorganic substances encompass non-metal elements like arsenic (As), selenium (Se) and Boron (B), along with heavy metal elements including cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb), in addition to several radioactive elements (Bednar et al., 2013; Baranov et al., 2020). Organic substances encompass a spectrum of environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls. Understanding the leaching behavior of chemical elements in CFA is helpful to select appropriate coal for use in electric power plants, optimize the combustion process of coal, and assess the contribution of CFA to the pollution of the environment. Studying the biological tolerance and half-life of toxic elements in CFA is valuable for predicting the risk of ecological balance and human health caused by CFA. Several of these studies are listed in Table 1.

Former Skydance Interactive President Pleads Guilty to Piloting Drone That Crashed Into Plane During Palisades Fire

Peter Akemann, the former president of Skydance Interactive, has pleaded guilty to flying the drone that collided with and subsequently grounded a Canadian Super Scooper firefighting plane as the Palisades Fire raged on Jan. 9.

Akemann, who worked with Skydance’s video game and virtual reality arm starting in 2016 and recently left his role, agreed to a guilty plea of one count of unsafe operation of an unmanned aircraft.

The charge, a misdemeanor, could result in a sentence of up to one year in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California announced Friday.

 

The Jan. 9 collision of a DJI Mini 3 Pro with a firefighting aircraft provided by the government of Quebec to help L.A. battle its destructive wildfires made national headlines.

The crash damaged a wing of the Canadair CL-415 Super Scooper, so called because it can fly low over water sources and ladle over 1,000 gallons of water to dump on a fire, and grounded the plane for days.

 

Per the plea agreement, Akemann launched the drone from the top floor of a parking garage near Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade on Jan. 9 in an attempt to survey the fire ravaging the Pacific Palisades.

But he lost track of the drone once he had flown it more than a mile and a half away from its starting point, after which it collided with the Canadian aircraft being manned by two crewmembers.

By this point, Federal Aviation Administration temporary flight restrictions barring drones from flying near the ongoing L.A.-area wildfires were already in effect. Akemann had already left his Skydance role at the time.

 

“This defendant recklessly flew an aircraft into airspace where first responders were risking their lives in an attempt to protect lives and property,” Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph T. McNally said in a statement on Friday.

“This damage caused to the Super Scooper is a stark reminder that flying drones during times of emergency poses an extreme threat to personnel trying to help people and compromises the overall ability of police and fire to conduct operations.

As this case demonstrates, we will track down drone operators who violate the law and interfere with the critical work of our first responders.”

 

Akemann’s defense attorneys, Glen T. Jonas and Vicki Podberesky, said he is “deeply sorry” for the incident in a statement.

“He accepts responsibility for his grave error in judgment, and is cooperating with the government in effort to make amends,” the statement reads.

“There are a number of mitigating factors that will come to light during the court proceedings including Mr. Akemann’s reliance on the DJI Drone’s geo fencing safeguard feature and the failure of that feature.”

 

The U.S. Attorney’s office notes that the damage to the aircraft’s wing cost the Quebec government and an aircraft repairs company at least $65,169.

As part of the plea agreement, Akemann agreed to cover those costs and complete 150 hours of community service to help Southern California wildfire relief efforts.

 

Akemann, a graduate of the University of California San Diego who holds a Ph.D. from the University of California Berkeley, co-founded the video game developer Treyarch (which worked on Spider-Man and Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, among other titles) and The Workshop Entertainment (behind Sorcery and Borderlands 2: Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage).

He joined Skydance in 2016 after the entertainment company acquired The Workshop and launched an interactive division that has since produced titles like Skydance’s Behemoth and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners.

The only things of consequence are windshield, hardware, engines, landing gear, tires. The rest of the plane is paper thin. Consider, nearly all parts contain magnesium for added strength, lower weight. The window will melt, if any of the magnesium catches on fire, everything near it including the steel bolts will be gonzo plus it was freshly refueled. It's as unlikely everything vaporized as it is that nothing vaporized. I don't like it anon, but short of going to ground zero and looking for ourselves, we're left to speculate over whatever the social media streams provide.

U.S. sending dozens of Patriot missiles from Israel to Ukraine

 

The U.S. military transferred around 90 Patriot air defense interceptors from storage in Israel to Poland this week in order to deliver them to Ukraine, three sources with knowledge of the operation tell Axios.

 

Getting more Patriot missiles to Ukraine has been a top priority for the Pentagon to help Kyiv defend against Russia's attacks on its critical infrastructure.

 

This is also the most significant delivery of weapons from Israel to Ukraine since the Russian invasion almost three years ago.

 

Last April, the Israeli Air Force officially decommissioned the Patriot air defense system, more than 30 years after it was first given to Israel during the first Gulf War.

 

The system became less relevant as Israel developed its own air defense systems, and most Patriot batteries were used for training or left in storage.

 

The sources tell Axios that after the IDF announced the decommissioning, Ukrainian officials approached the U.S. and Israel with an idea: Israel would give those missiles back to the U.S. to be refurbished and sent on to Ukraine

 

For several months, Israel dragged its feet out of concern Russia would retaliate, perhaps by supplying sophisticated weapons to Iran.

 

A Ukrainian official tells Axios Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to take his calls on that issue for weeks. But in late September, Netanyahu finally approved the idea, an Israeli official says.

 

At the time, Netanyahu wanted to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in order to get his approval for ultra-Orthodox Israelis to make an annual pilgrimage to the city of Uman in Ukraine, where a famous Rabbi is buried.

 

Zelensky wouldn't take his call until Netanyahu approved the Patriot deal, the Ukrainian official says.

 

A spokesperson for Netanyahu told Axios the prime minister didn't object to the decommissioning of the Patriot system and its return to the U.S. and denied any connection between this and the pilgrimage.

 

The Pentagon declined to comment for this story, as did a spokesperson for U.S. European Command.

 

A senior Israeli official told me Israel informed Russia in advance of the move and stressed it was "only returning the Patriot system to the U.S." and not supplying weapons to Ukraine.

 

The official said Israel told Russia it was a similar move to the one the U.S. made two years ago when it transferred artillery shells from emergency storage in Israel to Ukraine.

 

A spokesperson for the Israeli prime minister's office confirmed a Patriot system had been returned to the U.S., adding "it is not known to us whether it was delivered to Ukraine."

 

In recent days, U.S. Air Force C-17 planes arrived at an air base in southern Israel and departed for Rzeszów in Eastern Poland, a hub for moving weapons into Ukraine. The flights carried around 90 interceptors, which Ukraine can use with its current batteries. Additional equipment, like radars and other gear, will first be transferred to the U.S. to be refurbished.

 

Zelensky and Netanyahu spoke Tuesday, and Zelensky tweeted that they had discussed the release of the hostages as part of the Gaza ceasefire deal.

 

"We also discussed maintaining close contact with partners, particularly the United States and President Trump. We addressed current bilateral matters and agreed to maintain close contact in the near future," Zelensky added.

The Anticancer Potential of Chlorine Dioxide in Small-Cell Lung Cancer Cells

 

Abstract

Background Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an effective disinfectant consisting of oxygen, chloride, and potassium. Because of its high oxidative capacity, ClO2 exerts antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. However, its anticancer effects remain to be elucidated. Methodology The anticancer activity of CIO2 was assessed on DMS114 small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) as control by WST-1, Annexin V, cell cycle analysis, and acridine orange staining. We for the first time investigated the possible therapeutic effects of long-term stabilized ClO2 solution (LTSCD). Results Our preliminary findings showed that LTSCD significantly inhibited the proliferation of SCLC cells (p < 0.01) with less toxicity in HUVEC cells. Additionally, LTSCD induced apoptotic cell death in SCLC cells through nuclear blebbing and vacuolar formation. However, LTSCD treatment did not induce cell cycle arrest in both cell lines. Conclusions LTSCD can be a therapeutic potential for the treatment of SCLC. However, further investigations are required to assess the LTSCD-induced cell death in SCLC both in vitro and in vivo.

An Indiana man who was pardoned by US President Donald Trump over the US Capitol riot was killed by police during a traffic stop days later.

 

Matthew Huttle, 42, was shot and killed on Sunday when police pulled his vehicle over, and he allegedly resisted and ended up in an "altercation" with an officer, an Indiana State Police (ISP) statement said.

 

It remains unclear what he was being arrested for. Police added that Huttle had a firearm in his possession during the traffic stop.

 

Huttle was one of nearly 1,600 people who were last week given pardons or commutations by Trump for their roles in the riot on 6 January 2021 - when Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol building in Washington DC.

 

Indiana police said the officer involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave.

 

"For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer involved shooting," Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson said.

 

Huttle, and his uncle Dale Huttle, were among the hundreds of people who sentenced for storming the Capitol more than four years ago.

 

Huttle was in the US Capitol for some ten minutes during the riot and was ultimately sentenced to six months in prison as part of a plea deal. He was released from custody in July 2024.

Immediately after law school, Martin became the Human Rights Office Director for the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis where he supervised legal clinics for low-income St. Louisans. He served as a judicial clerk to Hon. Pasco M. Bowman, II of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and later worked as an associate with Bryan Cave LLP in their Washington D.C. and St. Louis offices.

 

For the past two decades, Martin has maintained his own law practice while engaging in public service, including serving as Chairman of the St. Louis Board of Election Commissioners, Chief of Staff to Missouri Governor Matt Blunt, and in senior positions at the Eagle Forum Education and Legal Defense Fund, including succeeding the late Phyllis Schlafly as President. Martin was Chairman of the Missouri Republican Party, member of the Republican National Committee, and previously ran for elected office in Missouri.

Border Patrol: Cartels OK Drone Bombs on Agents

Violence is growing along the Rio Grande Valley, where Mexican drug cartels are threatening to use drones to drop bombs on U.S. Border Patrol agents, according to a U.S. Border Patrol memo obtained by Newsmax.

"This is a major increase in threat to the United States, and it's specifically in the southern region where we've been talking about recently, where we've had a lot of gun battles between the U.S. Border Patrol and with Cartel del Noreste near Fronton, Texas," Newsmax's Jaeson Jones reported.

 

The memo from the Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector, dated Thursday, urges personnel to take all precautions and states that the cartels have "authorized" the use of "weaponized drones (explosives) being used against the Border Patrol and U.S. law enforcement officers."

The memo comes as the U.S. State Department issued a level four warning for all government personnel and U.S. citizens to not travel to the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, which is separated from Texas by the Rio Grande, Jones noted.

 

The travel warning was listed on the website for the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico on Monday, the day the gunfire was reported in Fronton. It lists only Tamaulipas with a Do Not Travel To" distinction.

The order states that Tamaulipas issued a warning that people must avoid moving or touching IEDs, which have been found along roads in the areas of Reynosa, Rio Bravo, Valle Hermoso, and San Fernando.

 

"As a precaution, U.S. government employees have been ordered to avoid all travel in and around Reynosa and Rio Bravo outside of daylight hours and to avoid dirt roads throughout Tamaulipas," the warning states.

"Here's what's happening," Jones said. "Cartel del Golfo and Cartel del Noreste, two of the major factions down there that have been fighting for a very long period of time have been setting up improvised explosive devices in the ground on these little back roads where most of these cartel operations happen, where they battle one another."

Huge 'alien' discovered in Antarctica with social media sent into frenzy with 'face' seen as 'evidence'

An internet detective has shared images of what appears to be a massive alien face emerging from the snow at the South Pole.

The Antarctic alien was discovered by a social media user who stumbled upon the image while browsing satellite pictures of the area on Google Earth. There was previously suggestions of a '12 meter wide' UFO in Antarctica.

 

The picture was shared on Reddit in the r/strangeearth community last Thursday, sparking a lively discussion among members.

The image seems to depict an extraterrestrial face with one half-closed eye, a nose, and a mouth clearly visible in an area where a world-famous flat-leather previously explored.

 

The face was found in the south-east region of the continent, a barren area known as Oates Land, named after British explorer Lawrence Oates who tragically died during the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition in 1912.

The user posted the spooky image, captioning it: "Possible Face in Antarctica."

 

They also provided the coordinates 72°00'36.0"S 168°34'40.0"E. Social media users were quick to compare the image to the famous "Face of Mars", a similar looking image captured of the Martian surface by the Viking 1 orbiter in 1976.

This image also seems to show a face and commenters speculated if the two could be related, reports the Mirror.

"I'd be more impressed if it and the face on mars ever lined up so they looked at each other," one user commented.

 

However, others were much more sceptical.

"This is peak pareidolia and happenstances. I don't understand why this whole post is a thing at all," said one.

 

Pareidolia is a common psychological phenomenon where people see faces in random objects such as clouds or rock formations.

The image had previously been shared in 2019, causing commenters then to claim that it could be evidence of a civilisation living under the ice at the South Pole. Antarctica has long been a centre for alien conspiracies.

 

In 2016 speculation ran wild online after satellite images of what appeared to be "pyramids" built on the white continent were circulated.

Most striking in particular was a black, snow-smeared tooth whose keen edges, slanted triangular faces, and sharp summit point bore a striking similarity to Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza - only instead of sand, the "structure" was surrounded by snow.

 

This massive object was a roughly 2-square-kilometer, 4,150-foot peak in that southern, lower section of the Ellsworth Mountains.

But geologists confirmed they were just regular mountain peaks that had been formed and shaped by glaciers and other natural processes.

Certainly, Trump has made no secret of his plans to make AI a priority. Indeed, Trump signed the first-ever Executive Order on AI in 2019. More recently, Trump issued an executive order giving the technology sector a green light to develop and deploy AI without any guardrails in place to limit the risks it might pose to U.S. national security, the economy, public health or safety.

Two Killed, 10 Wounded as Israeli Fighter Jets Attack Eastern Lebanon

 

Lebanon reports 15 ceasefire violations by Israeli forces

 

In eastern Lebanon, Israeli jets carried out attacks against areas near the Lebanon-Syria border, south of Baalbek. The Lebanon Health Ministry reported two people were killed in the attack, and 10 others wounded.

 

Details are still emerging about what was actually hit. Israel claims they targeted “underground” Hezbollah infrastructure in the airstrikes, and that all of the attacks in eastern Lebanon were general Hezbollah targets.

 

Other Israeli airstrikes were reported in the north of Lebanon, once again not far from the Syrian border. The Israeli strikes reportedly targeted a truck hauling scrap metal in the Akkar District, along with the border crossing outside of Hnaider.

 

These attacks bring the number of Lebanese killed by Israel since the ceasefire began in late November to at least 83. Lebanon reported 15 violations today on Thursday, with Lebanese National News Agency putting the number of Israeli violations of the ceasefire so far at 823.

 

Hezbollah officials have suggested in recent days that the number of total violations is well in excess of 1,000. It’s not clear how individual violations are counted right now, for instance, whether Israel burning down multiple civilian homes in a village is counted as a single violation or several. Since many of the violations involve mass destruction in occupied territory, that could explain the discrepancy.

Arab foreign ministers on Saturday rejected the transfer of Palestinians from Gaza “under any circumstances or justifications,” presenting a unified stance against US President Donald Trump’s call for Egypt and Jordan to take in residents of the Strip.

 

In a joint statement following a meeting in Cairo, the foreign ministers and officials from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League said they were looking forward to working with Trump’s administration to achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, based on a two-state solution.

 

The foreign ministers rejected any “infringement of the inalienable rights” of Palestinians, whether by “settlement, expulsion, home demolitions, annexation, depopulation of the land of its people through displacement, encouraged transfer or the uprooting of Palestinians from their land.”

 

The statement warned that such plans “threaten the region’s stability, risk expanding the conflict, and undermine prospects for peace and coexistence among its peoples.”

 

Trump insisted on Thursday that Jordan and Egypt will support a proposal to resettle Palestinians in their countries rather than in a rebuilt Gaza Strip, despite flat refusals from both countries to consider the move.

Man arrested as girl, 11 is stabbed to death in Nieuwegein

February 1, 2025

A 29-year-old man has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of an 11-year-old girl in Nieuwegein on Saturday afternoon. The man was picked up in a garden close to where the girl was killed.

The stabbing took place in Anemoonstraat, and several roads were closed off by police as the investigation got underway.

As yet, police said they do not know if the girl and her killer knew each other and have appealed for witnesses. The girl did not live on the street where she was attacked but did live in the neighbourhood.

However, locals told the Telegraaf they had been concerned about the man’s behaviour for some time, and three complaints had been made to the police about him. He is thought to come originally from Syria.

The dead girl and her family came from Eritrea, and the girl had celebrated her birthday on Friday, neighbours told the paper.

Do Black Hawks have flight data recorders because no all military aircraft, to this day have them. It was my job to remove/install/troubleshoot/download, based on my career field and only 1 of the 5 airframes I worked had a flight data recorder and the crew could pull the breaker if they didn't feel like being recorded. If your aircraft goes down in enemy territory, do you want them to have a box that shows your enemies their every move? That's why they aren't on all aircraft.

Israeli Troops Targeted In Southern Syria For First Time

 

Israeli troops have come under attack in southern Syria for the first time since they invaded the buffer zone adjacent to the occupied Golan Heights following the collapse of the Assad regime.

 

In a statement, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that troops were targeted in the buffer zone late on January 31 and returned fire toward the source of the shooting. There were no Israeli injuries, according to the military.

 

Daraa 24, a news blog that covers southern Syria, reported that a force of the IDF stormed the town of Turnejeh in the al-Quneitra countryside and arrested two young men. It is still unclear however if the move was related to the attack on Israeli troops.

 

On February 1 morning, the “Syrian Resistance,” a group affiliated with the former regime in Syria, claimed responsibility for the incident, according to the Lebanese Al-Akhbar news outlet which is close to Hezbollah.

 

The group announced that it “has begun its operations against the Israeli enemy alongside operations against al-Julani’s terrorist gangs,” using the nom de guerre of Syria’s transnational president Ahmed al-Sharaa who led the offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad.

 

The group also said that “the Syrian Resistance will not allow Israel to occupy our land. We will ambush it and al-Julani’s gangs with precise ambushes and surprise attacks.”

 

The IDF invaded southern Syria just hours after the fall of the Assad regime on December 8, occupying most of the buffer zone including the summit strategic Mount Hermon. For the next few days, it launched hundreds of strikes targeting the bases and equipment of the now dissolved Syrian Arab Army.

 

Syria’s transnational government condemned Israel’s actions and called on the country to respect the United Nations-observed 1974 separation of forces agreement.

 

It is highly unlikely that the attack on the IDF was carried out by the new Syrian military. At the same time, the so-called Syrian Resistance appears to be more of a propaganda stunt as there is nothing proving that the group actually exists. The poorly planned attack may have been carried out by locals fed up with the Israeli occupation of their farms. The lack of a strong reaction by the IDF suggests that this was the case.
