The mayor is hiring an outside consultant to rebuild the area in ways that are both equitable and sustainable.

  1. Among the wonderful technological discoveries which men of talent, especially in the present era, have made with God's help, the Church welcomes and promotes with special interest those which have a most direct relation to men's minds and which have uncovered new avenues of communicating most readily news, views and teachings of every sort. The most important of these inventions are those media which, such as the press, movies, radio, television and the like, can, of their very nature, reach and influence, not only individuals, but the very masses and the whole of human society, and thus can rightly be called the media of social communication.

 

  1. The Church recognizes that these media, if properly utilized, can be of great service to mankind, since they greatly contribute to men's entertainment and instruction as well as to the spread and support of the Kingdom of God. The Church recognizes, too, that men can employ these media contrary to the plan of the Creator and to their own loss. Indeed, the Church experiences maternal grief at the harm all too often done to society by their evil use. Hence, this sacred Synod, attentive to the watchful concern manifested by the Supreme Pontiffs and Bishops in a matter of such great importance, judges it to be its duty to treat of the principal questions linked with the media of social communication. U.S. District Judge George O’Toole, who Bill Clinton appointed, has blocked the transfer of a “transgender” biological male from a women’s prison to a male facility.

 

The inmate, identified under the pseudonym “Maria Moe,” filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration challenging the “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government” executive order, which removed men from women’s prisons and stopped the facilities from providing “any medical procedure, treatment, or drug” for “conforming an inmate’s appearance to that of the opposite sex.”

 

The lawsuit claimed the order infringes on his “due process rights” under the Fifth Amendment and is tantamount to “cruel and unusual punishment,” which is prohibited by the Eighth Amendment.

Billed as a show where the former deputy director of national intelligence would “break down the biggest issues of our day, from the origins of Covid-19 to the politicization of the intelligence community,” “Kash’s Corner” offered commentary on the news, often with a conspiratorial flourish.

 

The show, available only to Epoch Times subscribers, could receive fresh scrutiny as Patel faces Senate confirmation hearings. His lack of experience, his promotion of politically motivated conspiracy theories in a book vilifying the FBI, and his public remarks promising to “come after” judges, lawyers and the media involved in Trump’s many legal investigations are also likely subjects.

 

It wasn’t just his namesake show. Patel was a constant contributor across Epoch Times properties, appearing on other shows, on the sister television network NTDTV, and in the outlet’s Jan. 6 documentary. The last “Kash’s Corner” dropped in August 2023 with an announcement that Patel would be appearing on other shows and that the “Corner” would be back after the election.

 

The details of Patel’s contract with The Epoch Times aren’t known. (Financial disclosure forms filed by talk radio and Epoch Times host Larry Elder during a failed presidential run showed the company paid between $1 million and $5 million for a similar show.) A representative for Patel declined to comment.

 

Jekielek and The Epoch Times did not respond to requests for comment. In a June statement on the money laundering allegations, The Epoch Times said it “intends to and will fully cooperate with any investigation dealing with the allegations,” and noted that its chief financial officer, Bill Guan, had been suspended “until this matter is resolved.”

 

Turning the 'Corner'

 

“Kash’s Corner” debuted in the summer of 2021, when after years of increasingly powerful roles within Trump’s national security agencies, the former federal prosecutor was out of a full-time job following his boss’ election loss.

 

That January, he began consulting for Trump’s Save America PAC, which devoted most of its spending to the ex-president’s legal bills. (Patel ultimately earned $325,000 for the job.) In April, he started “fundraising consulting” for the campaign committee Friends of Matt Gaetz, pulling in $145,000 that year, following news that the far-right congressman was the subject of an underage sex-trafficking investigation (Gaetz has denied the allegations and no charges were brought). Patel also set up a website, Fight for Kash, where he solicited donations for undefined legal efforts that promised to “strike a major blow to the far-Left media and Big Tech!”

Denver Health this week paused gender-affirming surgeries for minors following threatened funding cuts from the Trump administration, leaving few options for transgender youth seeking that care in the metro area.

 

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Tuesday ordering institutions that receive federal funding to stop performing gender-affirming surgeries on anyone under 19, and forbidding them from offering puberty blockers or hormones for gender-affirming purposes.

 

The health system, which operates the region’s safety-net hospital, has not said whether it also is halting hormonal treatment.

 

“Denver Health is committed to and deeply concerned for the health and safety of our gender-diverse patients under the age of 19 in light of the executive order regarding youth gender-affirming care,” the system said in a statement Thursday. “We recognize this order will impact gender-diverse youth, including increased risk of depression, anxiety and suicidality.”

 

Trump’s executive order also directed federal agencies to explore ways to exclude coverage for gender-affirming care from Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and insurance plans sold on the individual marketplace.

 

The Denver hospital was not alone in its actions.

 

In Virginia, VCU Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond said they have suspended gender-affirming medication and gender-affirming surgical procedures for those under 19. In Washington, D.C., Children’s National Hospital said it had “paused prescriptions of puberty blockers and hormone therapy to comply with the directives while we assess the situation further.”

 

Denver Health officials did not say how often the hospital performed gender-affirming surgeries on people younger than 19. Most transgender people don’t undergo surgery until adulthood, if at all, but guidelines for treating patients allow surgeries to remove mammary tissue and create a masculine chest appearance in cases where the patient has the mental capacity to decide and is particularly distressed by their breasts.

 

The pause, first reported by 9News, doesn’t affect care for patients over 19. Hospitals that don’t comply with the order would risk losing funding through Medicare and Medicaid, which could be financially crippling for almost any facility.

 

Denver Health is particularly exposed, though, because it already faces financial headwinds and disproportionately relies on federal programs. In late 2024, the health system was on track to lose about $11 million for the year, following a $35 million loss in 2022 and a small profit in 2023.

 

The system hasn’t said how much money would be at risk if it didn’t fully comply with Trump’s order. About two-thirds of patient days in Denver Health’s hospital had either Medicare or Medicaid as the source of payment, according to the most recent hospital transparency report from the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

 

“These programs represent a significant portion of Denver Health’s funding, and the executive order specifically states that should we not comply, our participation in these programs is at risk,” the health system said in its statement. “The loss of this funding would critically impair our ability to provide care for the Denver community.”

 

The language in Trump’s executive order — using words such as “maiming,” “sterilizing” and “mutilation” — contradicts what is typical for gender-affirming care in the United States. It also labels guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health as “junk science.”

 

WPATH said in a statement that restrictions and bans on “access to necessary medical care for transgender youth are harmful to patients and their families.”

 

Gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth isn’t common. A new study shows that fewer than 1 in 1,000 U.S. adolescents with commercial insurance received puberty blockers or hormones during a recent five-year period, and the bulk of gender-affirming surgeries are not performed on youth.

 

The move by Denver Health leaves few other options for younger people in the region.

From 2021 to 2023, Kash Patel made content for The Epoch Times, a news organization known for its far-right conspiracy theories, its association with a Chinese dissident religious group, and, since June, a sprawling multimillion-dollar money laundering scheme allegedly perpetrated by one of its top executives.

 

Fraud allegations

 

Patel joined The Epoch Times as it appeared to be among the most successful media upstarts in the U.S., surging at a time while many other outlets were struggling to build an audience or turn a profit.

 

The company said it was making money through subscriptions and donations, claims that federal prosecutors now say were false.

 

According to an indictment unsealed in June, Guan, The Epoch Times’ chief financial officer, oversaw a group within the company’s Vietnam office called the “Make Money Online” team. Allegedly, the team used cryptocurrency to buy stolen funds, including debit cards loaded with fraudulent unemployment benefits, at a discount, and then funneled the laundered money into Guan’s and The Epoch Times’ bank accounts. Guan has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.

 

Prosecutors claim the alleged money laundering scheme netted the group some $67 million.

 

There’s no reason to believe that Patel, Jekielek or anyone else in the newsroom was aware of any alleged fraud.

 

It’s unclear if or how the FBI was involved in the investigation, whether and how it would be in the future, and how having a former Epoch Times content creator as director of the agency might affect any investigation going forward.

There were reportedly two pilots and four passengers onboard, and no one survived.

 

Preliminary ADS-B data indicates that, at about 1606:10, the airplane departed runway 24 at PNE and entered a climb to an altitude of 1650 ft. At about 1606:56, the airplane entered a rapid descent towards the ground. The last recorded data return showed an average rate of -11000 fpm and a ground speed of 247 knots.

The Treasury Department's highest-ranking career official quit after a clash with aides of Elon Musk over access to sensitive payment systems, according to the Washington Post, citing (of course), three anonymous sources.

 

David A. Lebryk, a decades-long Treasury official who President Trump named as acting secretary upon taking office last week, announced his retirement in a Friday email to colleagues. According to the report, Lebryk had a dispute with Musk surrogates over access to the US government's payment system used to disburse trillions of dollars every year.
