4chan, the controversial forum known for birthing early meme culture and Gamergate, is down, following an apparent hack. Per Downdetector, reports of an outage began circulating late Monday evening, with users sharing updates on connection issues through the early hours of Tuesday morning. As of the writing of this article, it's possible to access the website following a long delay, but clicking on any of the board links leads to a timeout.

 

According to screenshots shared on Imgur (NSFW warning), it appears a hacker gained shell access to 4chan's hosting server. They then went on to post images of the site's phpmyadmin page, and appear to have doxed the entire moderation team alongside many of the site's registered users. While it seems some users took steps to protect their identities, many appear to have used their primary email address to register for the forum, with .edu and even .gov addresses reportedly appearing in the list leaked emails.

 

It's unclear what this means for the future of 4chan, but some social media and Reddit users are speculating this could be the end of the internet's most infamous forum. In addition to doxing much of 4chan's userbase, the hacker also appears to have leaked the site's source code, revealing security holes that have existed since around the time Hiroyuki Nishimura bought the forum from creator Christoper Poole. It may take months to rebuild a more secure version of 4chan.

 

If this is the end of 4chan, it would be the most significant de-platforming of extreme right-wing internet users since Kiwi Farms temporarily went down in 2022.

Ukraine pounds Kursk with drones as Trump again blames Zelensky for Putin's invasion

Ukraine has pounded Russia’s Kursk region with dozens of drones, killing an elderly woman, injuring nine people and sparking fires, Russian authorities have said.

Over 100 drones were shot down over the region where Ukrainian forces have been locked in a grinding conflict, the Russian defence ministry claimed on Tuesday.

"Kursk has been subjected to a massive enemy attack overnight," the Kursk region administration said in a post on Telegram messaging app.

"Unfortunately, an 85-year-old woman died."

 

A multi-storey apartment building was damaged by the drone attack, with several flats catching fire, acting mayor of Kursk, Sergei Kotlyarov said on Telegram. Residents have been evacuated to a nearby school, he added.

The region's administration posted photos of a multi-storey apartment building with blown-out windows and fire damage to the facade. Drones also hit an ambulance garage, damaging 11 cars, it said.

Three people were killed in the region as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack, officials also said on Monday evening.

 

The reports are yet to be independently verified and there has been no immediate comment from Ukraine.

The attack follows a devastating Russian missile and bomb attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy over the weekend that killed 35 people and injured at least 119.

Following the deadly strike, US President Donald Trump joined world leaders in calling the attack “terrible” but then appeared to later blame his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, for starting the war in Ukraine.

Asked about Mr Zelensky during a meeting with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, Trump said: "When you start a war, you've got to know you can win the war.

 

"You don't start a war against somebody that's 20 times your size. And then hope that people give you some missiles."

He also told reporters: "If Biden were competent, and if Zelensky were competent, and I don't know that he is…

"There was no way that war should never have been allowed to happen." He added: "Biden could have stopped it, and Zelensky could have stopped it, and Putin should have never started it."

 

Meanwhile, Zelensky has urged Trump to visit Ukraine and witness first hand the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion.

Trump, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has repeatedly said he wants to end the "bloodbath" of the three-year war in Ukraine, though a deal has yet to be agreed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that it was not easy to agree with the US on the key parts of a possible peace deal to end the war and that Russia would never again allow itself to depend economically on the West.

 

Both Ukraine and Russia have denied targeting civilians since Russia first launched its full-scale invasion on Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.

Kursk and other Russian regions on the border with Ukraine have been subject to frequent air and land attacks by Kyiv forces who say their goal is to undermine Moscow's overall war efforts.

 

Ukrainian troops last year staged a cross-border incursion into the Kursk region of which the city of Kursk is the administrative centre.

Ukrainian forces still remain in parts of the region, although Russian forces have recaptured much lost territory.

Russia currently controls a little under one-fifth of Ukraine, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, and parts of four other regions Moscow now claims are part of Russia - a claim not recognised by most countries.

US blocks G7 condemnation of Russia over Sumy strike – Bloomberg

US President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly refused to back a G7 statement condemning Russia’s recent missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.

 

On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed firing two Iskander-M missiles the day before,targeting a gathering of Ukrainian and Western command staff, killing at least 60 senior servicemen.

 

The Ukrainian authorities, however, have claimed that the Russian missiles struck a military awards ceremony, leaving 35 civilians dead and 129 others injured.Following the attack, Ukraine and a number of its international backers accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians and undermining peace talks.

 

According to Bloomberg, the G7, which is being presided over by Canada this year,has drafted a joint statement denouncing the strike on Sumy but has not released it due to a lack of US support. In a draft of the statement seen by the outlet, the group said that the attack was proof that Russia was determined to continue the hostilities.

 

Bloomberg reported that Trump’s team had told the group thatit couldn’t sign the statement because it is “working to preserve the space to negotiate peace.”

 

Since taking office in January, Trump has pushed to get both Moscow and Kiev to the negotiating table and has resumed direct contacts with Russia in order to facilitate a peace deal.

 

Throughout the Ukraine conflict, Moscow has maintained that it never targets civilian infrastructure. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov recently emphasized that Russia only strikes military targets.

 

Russian officials have also stated that Moscow remains open to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict but have stressed that any settlement must address its root causes. Moscow has demanded that Kiev demilitarize, denazify, give up its NATO ambitions, and adhere to a position of neutrality, and recognize the territorial “realities on the ground.”

Drone Sightings Surge in NJ—What’s Going On?

If you’ve noticed more drones in the skies of New Jersey recently, you’re not imagining it.

While a dramatic spike in drone sightings hit the state last December, this uptick doesn’t repeat that panic.

Instead, it ties to a federal effort to strengthen drone detection and airspace safety.

 

The Federal Aviation Administration launched a two-week drone-detection test in Cape May on April 14. The test runs through April 25.

During the operation, FAA crews fly several large drones along with more than 100 commercial off-the-shelf models.

They aim to evaluate new detection technology in coastal environments that deal with heavy air traffic, shifting weather and other challenges.

Testing takes place only on weekdays during daylight hours. Officials have asked the public to avoid flying recreational drones in the area until the test ends.

 

ASSURE, the FAA’s research center, leads the operation in coordination with local police and emergency responders.

Crews conduct testing over marshes, dunes, open channels and offshore zones. Only authorized personnel may access the sites.

 

The Cape May test is one of 14 evaluations happening nationwide. The FAA wants to see whether these detection systems can spot drones without disrupting aircraft navigation or other flight operations.

Drone activity in New Jersey surged last year. Residents reported thousands of drone sightings, especially at night. Many involved drones flying in groups, raising safety concerns.

Officials verified some reports as drones but later identified others as manned aircraft. The FAA found no national security threat but issued temporary flight restrictions around key infrastructure sites.

 

The current test doesn’t respond directly to those past incidents. Instead, it supports the FAA’s ongoing effort to refine drone tracking and improve airspace management.

The agency plans to release results after analyzing the data collected.

Details of Iran’s nuclear demands revealed – media

Tehran is reportedly willing to provide guarantees that its atomic program is non-military in exchange for sanctions relief

 

Iran is ready to provide assurances that it is not seeking to weaponize its nuclear program in exchange for US sanctions relief, the country’s top diplomat has said, as quoted by the Tehran Times. Seyed Abbas Araghchi headed the Iranian delegation during indirect talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff in the Omani capital, Muscat on Saturday.

 

The meeting was the first diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran in years, with discussions focusing on Iran’s nuclear program and the potential easing of US sanctions.

 

According to the news outlet,Araghchi stated that Iran wants a “win-win agreement” and “would not, under any circumstances, agree to dismantle its nuclear program.”

 

He said, however, that the country is “willing to take steps to provide assurances against the militarization of its nuclear activities.” This would include allowing the International Atomic Energy Agency access to the country’s nuclear sites.

 

In return, Tehran wants US sanctions on several sectors to be removed without the possibility of being brought back “under other pretexts,” according to the Tehran Times.

 

The publication said it learned that Witkoff acknowledged that the US needs to make concessions. During the talks, the envoy reportedly did not mention the potential dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear program, nor did he reference the original deal, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which US President Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018 during his first term in office.

 

In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Witkoff stopped short of calling for Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program, despite demands from other US officials, including White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.

 

“The conversation with the Iranians will be much about two critical points,” Witkoff said. The first is the verification of uranium enrichment, “and ultimately verification on weaponization, that includes missiles, type of missiles that they have stockpiled there, and it includes the trigger for a bomb.”

 

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), however, has since insisted that Iran’s military capabilities are off limits.

 

“National security and defense, and military power are among the red lines of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which cannot be discussed or negotiated under any circumstances,” IRGC spokesman Ali Mohammad Naini said on Tuesday, as cited by various media outlets.

 

The next round of talks between Iran and the US is expected to take place on April 19.

After a week that started with the worst financial volatility in recent history and ended with the most serious escalation so far of the China-US conflict, it is time to distinguish the tectonic shifts from the tremors. If nothing changes, the 2020s risks being remembered as this century’s devil’s decade – the term historians once used for the 1930s. It will be defined not just by seven million people who have died of Covid-19 and rising global poverty and inequality – but also by a dismembered Ukraine, a burnt-out Gaza and little-reported atrocities in Africa and Asia, each testimony to the violent displacement of a rules-based global order by a power-based one.

 

Indeed, before our eyes, every single pillar of the old order is under assault – not just free trade but the rule of law and the primacy we have long attached to human rights and democracy, the self-determination of peoples, and multilateral cooperation between nations, including the humanitarian and environmental responsibilities we once accepted as citizens of the world.

 

Power shifts are, of course, the stuff of history.Within the space of two centuries, four world orders have risen and fallen. The first two – the balance of power that emerged after the defeat of Napoleon in the early 19th century, and the post-1918 Treaty of Versailles system born after four dynastic empires collapsed – ultimately ended in the carnage of world wars. Then came the post-1945 architecture, led by the US and the United Nations; and, after 1990 with the breakup of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, what US president George HW Bush called a “new world order”.

 

Now, as the economic balance of power shifts eastwards and a new mercantilism takes root, what was once called the Washington consensus is no longer supported anywhere – least of all in Washington.Globalisation is now rejected by millions as a “free for all” that has not been fair to all. It is not open trade but the opposite – restrictions on trade – now being popularised as a nation’s route to prosperity.

 

President Trump’s tactical ploy has been to exploit the profound shifts that were already reshaping the world’s geopolitics:first, the yawning gap between the benefits that globalisation promised and what it delivered in people’s everyday lives, and so he has become the world’s leading anti-globalist. He also saw how, turbo-charged by social media blitzes landing nonstop via people’s phones, he could resurrect the “great man” theory of history – Putin, Xi, Erdoğan and Kim Jong-un having shown him that populist but dictatorial leaders could set the agenda.

 

But Trump’s sheer unpredictability foreshadows even greater danger ahead. “Let chaos reign and don’t rein in the chaos” seems to be the mantra, and while there may be a lingering hope that something like normal governance might resume soon, this can no longer be a rational basis for anyone’s future planning. Instead, with both the US and China taking risks in accelerating their confrontation to new levels, the question is whether we are descending towards a “one world, two systems” future, or simply the chaotic disorder that has characterised the history of most previous centuries – and whether there is now any chance of building a world order that could ever be stable and sustainable. What’s clear after recent events is thatthe fourth global order cannot be restored. We are not only in a more protectionist era but are moving from a unipolar world where the US was the sole hegemonic power to one that has many more centres of decision-making power. But because we are also a more interconnected world, we are more vulnerable to crises – from pandemics and climate emergencies to financial contagion. All the more so because countries can, as we saw this week, weaponise that interdependence and the choke points it creates for their own advantage. So if we are to have anything approaching a values-based order we will have at some point to agree an updated global charter for our common future, something that builds on the Atlantic Charter of 1941 and the UN Charter of 1945, but is geared to a completely different century.

 

As William Beveridge said at that time: “A revolutionary moment in the world’s history is a time for revolutions, not for patching.” Over the past few days, calls for multilateral cooperation have come from the leaders of Spain, Brazil and South Africa, this year’s chairs of three global conferences: the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, the 30th UN climate change conference and the G20. “As a collective we must now unite to enforce international law,” the Malaysian prime minister and Colombian and South African presidents have written. “The choice is stark: either we act together to enforce international law or we risk its collapse.”

 

All countries that believe in international cooperation should pledge that through a new multilateralism this generation will deliver global solutions to what are now inescapably global problems that cannot be resolved by nation states acting on their own or in bilateral deals alone. Second, as building blocks of that future, this collation of the willing should immediately engage in practical cooperation on urgent concerns for which no nation state-only answers are possible – global security, climate, health and humanitarian needs as well as the flow of trade. They should work to modernise the international institutions that deliver them.

 

And third, we should try to build a bridgehead to sceptics such as Trump by agreeing with him on the need for reciprocity and for fair burden-sharing between nations; and because this is a debt-laden world we should propose innovative and equitable ways to raise the resources needed to turn these commitments into action. Bloomberg reports that on the first day of a highly anticipated trial that has been years in the making, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took to the stand to face questions from the FTC regarding the company’s acquisition of Instagram in 2012. The FTC argues that Meta, formerly known as Facebook, bought its way to a social networking monopoly by acquiring Instagram and later WhatsApp.

 

During his testimony, which lasted over three hours, Zuckerberg was forced to revisit a time when he doubted Facebook’s ability to compete in the mobile photo-sharing market. The FTC’s lead trial lawyer, Daniel Matheson, presented emails from 2010 to 2012 showing Zuckerberg’s concerns about Facebook falling behind Instagram in the mobile app boom. In one email from June 2011, Zuckerberg stated that Facebook needed to “get their act together quickly” to catch up with Instagram.

 

The FTC alleges that Meta’s purchases of Instagram and WhatsApp were “killer acquisitions” designed to eliminate competition and maintain a monopoly in the social media market. Russian President Vladimir Putin is pursuing a permanent peace and a legally binding settlement to the Ukraine conflict, US special envoy Steve Witkoff has told Fox News.

Witkoff, tasked by US President Donald Trump to lead negotiations with Moscow, met with Putin and two of his senior advisers on Friday.

 

The US envoy shared details of the talks in an interview on Monday, describing the nearly five-hour meeting with Putin as “compelling” and saying it brought the Ukraine peace process to “the verge” of a breakthrough.

According to Witkoff, Putin is pursuing a lasting solution. “So beyond just a ceasefire, we got an answer to that,” the envoy said, adding it “took a while for us to get to this place.”

 

A key part of any deal, Witkoff said, would be the recognition that Crimea, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions are part of Russia. However, he emphasized that the proposed agreement goes beyond territorial issues.

“There’re security protocols, NATO Article 5 [on collective security] … a lot of detail attached to it. It’s a complicated situation,” he said.

 

Still, Witkoff said he believed the two sides “might be on the verge of something that would be very, very important for the world at large.”

Friday’s meeting was Witkoff’s third with the Russian president since February. Trump has repeatedly said he aims to end the hostilities in Ukraine as quickly as possible.

 

Russia has maintained it is open to peace talks, provided its key security demands are addressed.

Moscow opposes any NATO presence on Ukrainian soil and has demanded that Kiev demilitarize, denazify, adhere to a position of neutrality, and recognize the territorial “realities on the ground.”

 

The Russian government has insisted it will not accept a freeze of the conflict, which it maintains will only lead to renewed hostilities later on.

Moscow has cited Ukraine’s violations of a US-proposed moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure as proof of Kiev’s untrustworthiness.

 

Commenting on Putin’s meeting with Witkoff, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday there were “no clear outlines of any agreement yet,” but that there was the political will to move forward.

Moscow, he added, values the “constructive and substantive” contact with the US side.

‘Absurd’ Parliament Report Faces Backlash over Claims of No ‘Two-Tier’ Policing in Southport Riots

 

A Parliamentary report claiming that there was no evidence of “two-tier policing” in response to last year’s protests and riots over the Southport child murders has been blasted as “absurd” by commentators.

 

On Monday, the Home Affairs Committee in the House of Commons published a report which asserted that the police response to the unrest following the murder of three young girls at a Taylor Swift dance party by a Rwandan-heritage teenager was proportionate and did not demonstrate police bias.

 

The anger over the mass stabbing resulted in 246 protests and counter-protests across the UK, the report found, 88 of which were found to be “significant”. To date, there have been 1,804 arrests and 1,072 charges over the riots, including some for merely posting on social media.

 

Due to the extraordinary number of arrests, the government also embarked on a scheme to release criminals from prison to make room in Britain’s overcrowded jails to house those convicted over the riots.

 

The report, finding no evidence of bias, said per Sky News: “Those participating in disorder were not policed more strongly because of their supposed political views but because they were throwing missiles, assaulting police officers and committing arson.

 

“It was disgraceful to see unsubstantiated commentary about ‘two-tier policing’ undermining the efforts of police officers who served bravely in the face of violence.”

 

The chairwoman of the committee, Conservative MP Dame Karen Bradley, said: “There is a difference in how police must deal with violence and how they deal with peaceful protests.

 

“This needs to recognised by commentators who all too readily spread claims of ‘two-tier policing’. Organised disorder is rightly met with a robust response; any implied equivalence with planned non-violent protests is simply wrong.”

This inconsistency isn’t just policy confusion. It reveals a dangerous flaw. When it should have been cautious, it was aggressive. When it needed to act decisively, it stalled. Now the economy is drifting in a high-rate fog, and middle-class households are paying the price. Monetary policy under Powell has been reactionary, not strategic—always a step late, always off tempo.

 

Markets crave clarity and stability. What they’ve received instead is a Fed that seems to drift with the political winds, refusing to admit mistakes while everyday Americans shoulder the consequences. The damage is real. Rate-sensitive sectors are buckling, credit is tightening, and confidence is slipping. The Powell era may go down not as the protector of price stability, but as its most unreliable steward.

Russian strike on Sumy targeted Ukrainian and NATO officers – Lavrov

Kiev has routinely flouted international law by placing armaments in or near civilian infrastructure, the minister said.

If the drug in question is finasteride, and the outlet is The Wall Street Journal’s podcast The Journal, the answer is yes. In an episode titled "A Quick Fix for Hair Loss Is Making Some Men Sick," reporter Kate Linebaugh and her colleague Rolfe Winkler offer a thorough and, at times, harrowing portrait of young men suffering lasting damage after taking the drug for cosmetic reasons. They interrogate clinical trial methods, marketing practices, and regulatory oversight with admirable precision.

 

The same cannot be said for vaccines.

 

The paradox is not epistemic, it is cultural. What explains the asymmetry is not the evidence, but the narrative framing that dominates our medical discourse. Ordinary pharmaceuticals, even when prescribed by doctors and approved by regulatory authorities, are fair game for skepticism. But vaccines, especially those administered at scale and under the banner of public health, have acquired a kind of moral invincibility. Critique is construed as heresy.

 

Begin with methodology. As Winkler notes, many of finasteride’s most troubling effects, panic attacks, suicidal ideation, muscle atrophy, cognitive decline, were either missed or discounted in the drug’s original clinical trials. One endocrinologist interviewed suggests the trials were too short, too small, and too narrowly focused to detect longer-term or systemic harms. This is a familiar critique of pharmaceutical research. It is also, strangely, a critique that vanishes when the subject turns to vaccines.

 

Standard drug trials, if conducted properly, are randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and long enough to detect both efficacy and safety issues. Yet most vaccines, particularly those given to children, have not been tested against inert placebos. The CDC’s own documentation confirms this. Of the 72 vaccine doses required under the current childhood immunization schedule, none have undergone the kind of rigorous placebo-controlled pre-licensure trials that would be standard for any other class of pharmaceutical.

 

Why does this matter? Because when clinical trial data are the sole bulwark against adverse events, the quality of those trials is non-negotiable. A saline placebo trial does not just measure whether a vaccine prevents illness, it measures whether it does so without causing other forms of harm. Without it, we are left comparing one intervention against another, with no true baseline.

 

The same problem afflicts older vaccines. The hepatitis B vaccine, for instance, was approved in the 1980s based on trials that used another vaccine—not saline—as the control. Ditto for DTP, MMR, and others. These foundational products were never subjected to the testing protocols we now consider the gold standard. The consequences, though rarely discussed in mainstream press, are not theoretical. Vaccine court settlements, while rare, have awarded billions to individuals harmed by vaccines. And yet, these settlements—unlike Winkler’s finasteride exposé—rarely reach the front page.

That was something that was pitched to Bannon during his stop in on “Real Time with Bill Maher” recently.

 

Maher asked Bannon if there would be any Democrat who would scare him if Trump runs for a third term. “Because I guess if we allow that, it could be Obama,” Maher said.

“Absolutely, I think that would be great,” Bannon said. “Alien versus Predator. Let’s do it.” “That’s kind of a worse insult to Trump,” Maher said.

 

The two spent most of their time though with Maher pressing Bannon to explain how it would be possible for Trump to run for a third term.

Bannon told Maher that Trump was “going to run for a third term.” That is when Maher read the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution to Bannon.

 

“Amendment 22,” Maher said. “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice.

“And yet you keep talking about Trump’s — maybe you should have this,” Maher said handing Bannon the Constitution.

“President Trump is going to run for a third term, and President Trump is going to be elected again on the afternoon of January 20th of 2029,” Bannon said. “He’s going to be President of the United States.”

 

“OK, but the thing I just read in there,” Maher said pointing to the Constitution. “It seemed like there was no wiggle room there. It seemed like it was just, you know, eight or 10 words that said only two times.”

Bannon told Maher that there was “a team of people” working on finding a way around that amendment.

“How can a team do something about that?” Maher asked. “I don’t care if the team is twelve trillion people, the words are still the words.”

 

Bannon then said, “The interpretation of this (U.S. Constitution) is open for interpretation.”

Maher then took the time to go through each word of the amendment with Bannon. “I don’t see what the ‘team’ is finding,” Maher said.

 

Bannon has been trumpeting that Trump will run for a third term for some time now.

“I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run and win again in 2028, so I’ve already endorsed President Trump,” Bannon said during an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo recently. “

A man like this comes along once every century if we’re a little lucky. We’ve got him now. He’s on fire, and I’m a huge supporter. I wanna see him again in 2028.”

Cuomo, of course, also pointed out that Trump was term-limited and asked how Trump could get another term.

 

“We are working on it,” Bannon said. “I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives. Let’s say that. “We’ll see what the definition of term-limit is.”

“Because I don’t want people to listen to our interview and say, ‘Bannon is cooking up an insurrection, ‘” Cuomo said. “You know what I mean? I want people to get a straight take on where you head is.”

 

Bannon said he has had “greater longshots.”

“We supported President Trump after the election,” Bannon said. “I realize you don’t think the election of 2020 was stolen. We do. We fervently believe that.

When President Trump went back to Mar-a-Lago on January 20, 2021, he was the longest of longshots to return to the White House.

We said that day on our podcast, having President Trump’s back that he was coming back not just to win the primary but to win the White House.”

Sumy strike targeted meeting of Ukrainian commanders – Moscow

The Defense Ministry in Moscow has confirmed that Russian forces were behind the missile strike on the Ukrainian city of Sumy on Sunday, saying that it targeted a gathering of the country’s commanding officers.

 

The attack has left more than 60 Ukrainian servicemen dead, the ministry said in a statement on Monday.

 

It was carried out with the use of two Iskander-M short-rangeballistic missiles despite “active counteraction by the Ukrainian military’s electronic warfaremeans and foreign-made air defense systems,” the statement read.

 

The target of the attack was “a meeting of thecommand staff of the Seversk operational-tactical group” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which was taking place in Sumy that day, the ministry said.

Gianluigi Aponte, the secretive Italian billionaire who founded MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co SA, has emerged as a powerful broker in a $19 billion port deal with Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing.

 

Aponte and his family-controlled Terminal Investment Ltd., known as TiL, are the main investors in a consortium that has proposed a $19 billion accord to buy 43 ports from Li’s CK Hutchison Holdings, people familiar with the matter have said.

 

The grouping includes BlackRock Inc. and its Global Infrastructure Partners unit, which will control two of the ports in Panama. GIP also has a minority stake in TiL.

 

The deal has thrust the 84-year-old Aponte into an uncharacteristically high-profile position while underscoring his firm’s increasingly dominant role in worldwide shipping. MSC has grown to control about a fifth of global shipping capacity, and Aponte has a net worth of $25.6 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

 

The low-key Aponte, silver-haired and slight of build, rarely speaks in public or gives interviews. His closely held company doesn’t publish financial reports or strategy updates.

 

Still, he’s a member of the exclusive club of ultra-wealthy European shipping magnates who earned huge windfalls during the pandemic, and who’ve been expanding their empires ever since.

 

The group includes the Maersk-Uggla family behind Danish container line AP Moller-Maersk A/S, Klaus-Michael Kuehne, Germany’s richest man, who has a 30% stake in Hapag-Lloyd AG, and Rodolphe Saade and his family, who control CMA CGM SA.

Seafaring Roots

 

The Aponte family traces its seafaring roots back to 1675, according to its corporate website. Gianluigi Aponte was born near the Bay of Naples, where the family traditionally ferried goods and passengers.

 

He trained as a ship’s captain and later operated ferries shuttling wealthy tourists to island resorts like Capri and Ischia. It was on one of those trips that he met his future wife, Rafaela Diamant, the daughter of a Swiss banker.

 

Aponte started MSC in 1970 after purchasing an old German break-bulk ship, and the following year he bought a second vessel, naming it after his wife.

 

He soon began buying secondhand container ships, some from scrapyards, as he looked to break into a business dominated by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. After carving out a niche on under-served routes, MSC eventually distinguished itself by emphasizing price over delivery speed.

 

In the late 1980s Aponte made the jump into the leisure segment, and MSC Cruises became the world’s third-largest cruise brand. Like his European shipping peers, Aponte pushed heavily into ports and logistics.

 

MSC’s pandemic-era profits fueled a further rapid expansion drive, and by 2022 it had achieved its founder’s goal of becoming the world’s biggest container carrier, dropping Maersk into second place.

 

Aponte’s son Diego became MSC’s group president in 2014. Still, the senior Aponte remains highly active in MSC’s management as group chairman, with decision-making closely concentrated among the extended family, according to industry executives.

 

Diego Aponte also heads the board of Geneva-based TiL where his father is a director, according to its website, which lists its shareholders as MSC, BlackRock’s GIP and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC.

Vance blasts Zelensky for ‘absurd’ claim

US Vice President J.D. Vance has accused Vladimir Zelensky of making “absurd” statements, after the Ukrainian leader suggested that Washington is on Russia’s side in the conflict between Moscow and Kiev.

 

In an interview with CBS News on Sunday, Zelensky claimed that “Russian narratives are prevailing in the US” and that Moscow has “enormous influence” on the administration of US President Donald Trump and its policies.

 

Responding in a conversation with the UnHerd outlet published on Tuesday, Vance describedZelensky’s remarks as “certainly not productive.”

 

“I think it is sort of absurd for Zelensky to tell the [US] government, which is currently keeping his entire government and war effort together, that we are somehow on the side of the Russians,” he stressed.

 

“If you want to end the conflict, you have to try to understand where both the Russians and the Ukrainians see their strategic objectives,” Vance added.

 

“That does not mean you morally support the Russian cause, or that you support the full-scale invasion, but you do have to try to understand what are their strategic red lines, in the same way that you have to try to understand what the Ukrainians are trying to get out of the conflict,” he said.

 

Members of the Trump administration “are not on anybody’s side.We are on America’s side,”Vance insisted.

 

Trump and Vance publicly clashed with Zelensky during his visit to the White House in late February, accusing the Ukrainian leader of disrespect toward the US, failing to appreciate American aid, and not being interested in achieving peace with Russia.

 

Russian Foreign Minister SergeyLavrovtold the Kommersant newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday thatMoscow appreciates that “the Trump administration is trying to get to the bottom of the issue and, most importantly, understand the root cause” of the Ukraine conflict.

 

Lavrov also noted that Trump “has repeatedly said that the colossal mistake which led to the current events in Ukraine was the Biden administration’s decision to drag Ukraine into NATO.”

 

Ukrainian neutrality remains one of Moscow’s key demands for a settlement of the conflict, along with the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine and recognition by Kiev that Crimea, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and Kherson and Zaporozhye regions are part of Russia.

Swedish Report Fails to Find Evidence of Sabotage by Chinese Bulker

The Swedish Maritime Accident Investigation Board released the details of its observations aboard a Chinese bulker accused of damaging undersea cables saying it cannot determine sabotage. The agency participated in the ongoing efforts to investigate the Yi Peng 3 (75,121 dwt bulker registered in China) which was linked to the damage to two undersea communications cables.

 

The government agency that investigates accidents and incidents states that it “cannot be determined with certainty whether a Chinese ship intentionally damaged data cables in the Baltic Sea in November 2024.” It however also notes that its assessment does not prevent the Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office from conducting a preliminary investigation into a suspected crime and that law enforcement authorities in several affected states are conducting criminal investigations into the incident.

 

In an 18-page presentation (online in Swedish) the board details its observations aboard the vessel. It however notes the limitations it was working under saying that the flag state normally leads the investigation and that the Chinese limited its access. They were not given an opportunity to access electronic evidence such as the surveillance images from the Voyage Data Recorder and limited crew interviews with interpreters and authorities present in the room.

 

The board concludes that there are “two alternative scenarios for the incident, one of which is that the ship deliberately released the anchor to cause damage to the bottom infrastructure during the voyage in the Baltic Sea. … The other alternative is that the anchor came loose because it was poorly secured or not at all.”

 

The crew asserted during the interviews that the release of the anchor was unintentional. Investigators pointed out that the vessel dragged its port anchor for 1.5 days or approximately 180 nautical miles. Among the points they highlight supporting a possible accidental release is weather conditions, which according to the logs on the ship were slightly worse than the Swedish authorities had believed. In an oncoming sea the report notes with extra force from the ship’s speed and bow hitting the sea, “could be sufficient to cause the anchor to start running out.”

 

They note the ship did not slow down saying it would have been natural to reduce speed to prevent risking damage to the ship or endangering the crew during the release. They also determined the anchor and a section of chain hit the seafloor leaving a mark. It then dragged and bounced across the floor.

 

During the examination of the ship, they noted a number of conditions such as the lack of marks on the windlass to indicate the brake had been applied. They could not determine if the anchor had been fully secured after the vessel departed Russia, but also noted a lack of damage to elements that might have been expected if the anchor broke free. They also noted that elements such as equipment covers might have been changed before they were permitted to board the ship.

 

It is not the first time the authorities have failed to find specific evidence of sabotage after the series of incidents in the Baltic region. In February 2025, the Swedish Prosecutor’s Office released the Navibulgar bulker Vezhen also saying it could not find evidence of sabotage. A commercial fishing trawler was also detained after another incident but released after only a few hours.

 

Baltic nations remain on high alert after a series of incidents and were successful in getting NATO to increase its assets in the region. Patrols have been increased while the nations plot new steps to safeguard their undersea infrastructure which they believe has become a target in a new style of war.

The resignations will shut down the decade-old program at the end of the month, three employees told Politico.

 

The agency was created in 2015 to help the Defense Department adopt tech fixes during national security crises with the goal of having Silicon Valley-style innovation inside the Pentagon, Politico said.

 

The Defense Digital Service helped build rapid response tools that assisted the military during the Afghanistan withdrawal and with Ukraine military aid, humanitarian aid, and drone detection, Politico said.

 

Jennifer Hay, the director of the 14-person team plans to leave by May 1, while 11 other employees will take President Donald Trump's deferred resignation package. Two other staffers are also leaving, Politico reported.

 

The office's functions will be absorbed by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, a Pentagon spokesman told Politico.

 

Hay told Politico she and her staff expected to be part of DOGE's efforts to automate the Pentagon operations and adopt AI, only to find themselves sidelined. Tech mogul Elon Musk oversees DOGE.

 

"The reason we stuck it out as long as we have is that we thought we were going to be called in," said Hay.

I never had a lot of compassion for people and Q specifically taught me a lesson about this when someone posted about their dog that died and I made a skeptical and dismissive post saying they were fishing for sympathy and Q directly replied and made a fool out of me.
