Australia Orders Search Engines to Enforce Digital ID Age Checks

The new rules pull search engines and hosting platforms deeper into Australia’s expanding web of digital control.

Australia has moved to tighten control over the digital environment with the introduction of three new online safety codes, measures that raise pressing privacy and censorship concerns.

These codes, formalized on June 27 under the Online Safety Act, go beyond introducing digital ID checks for adult websites; they also place substantial obligations on tech companies, from search engines and internet service providers (ISPs) to hosting platforms.

Businesses that fail to comply face the threat of significant financial penalties, with fines reaching as high as 49.5 million Australian dollars, or about $32.5 million US.

The codes seek to restrict Australian users’ exposure to material classified under two categories: Class 1C and Class 2.

Class 1C encompasses “online pornography – material that describes or depicts specific fetish practices or fantasies.”

Class 2 covers a broader range of content, from “online pornography – other sexually explicit material that depicts actual (not simulated) sex between consenting adults” (Class 2A), to “online pornography – material which includes realistically simulated sexual activity between adults. Material which includes high-impact nudity” or “other high-impact material which includes high-impact sex, nudity, violence, drug use, language and themes. ‘Themes’ includes social Issues such as crime, suicide, drug and alcohol dependency, death, serious illness, family breakdown, and racism” (Class 2B).

Schedule 1 – Hosting Services Online Safety Code, companies that provide hosting services within Australia, including social media platforms and web hosts, are compelled to implement six compliance measures.

A core requirement obliges these services to manage the risks posed by significant changes to their platforms that could make Class 1C or Class 2 material more accessible to Australian children.

Schedule 2 – Internet Carriage Services Online Safety Code targets ISPs. It mandates the provision of filtering tools and safety guidance to users and empowers the eSafety Commissioner to order the blocking of material deemed to promote or depict abhorrent violent conduct.

The Commissioner has previously exercised similar powers, as in the directive to block footage of a stabbing circulated on X.

Schedule 3 – Internet Search Engine Services Online Safety Code directs search engine providers to roll out age verification for account creation within six months.

These platforms are also instructed to develop systems capable of detecting and filtering out online pornography and violent material by default, where technically feasible and practicable.

Additional stipulations include offering parental controls, preventing sexually explicit autocomplete suggestions, supplying crisis prevention resources, and mitigating accidental exposure to restricted content.

The measures extend to AI-powered search functions, although standalone AI applications are not covered.

These regulations significantly expand the surveillance and censorship capabilities of the Australian government, raising several alarms among privacy advocates concerned about the erosion of digital freedoms under the push for online digital ID

The outlet reported that Mills’ staff has not commented publicly on the interaction.

Fox News noted that Maine Republicans have called on the governor to respond to rumors of drug use in her younger years, which Mills has denied in the past.

The governor was investigated for alleged cocaine use in 1990 by state and federal agencies, but no charges were ever filed.

Mills, 76, claimed she was targeted over her politics. She is currently serving her second term as Maine’s governor.

She has faced scrutiny from critics in the past over her far-left policies and her tone when dealing with opponents.

Mills’ defiance of President Donald Trump’s executive order banning boys who identify as transgender from competing in girls’ sports in the state garnered all sorts of headlines.

The Trump administration sued Mills and Maine in April when Mills said she would ignore the order.

“The Department of Justice will not sit by when women are discriminated against in sports,” US Attorney General Pam Bondi said at the time. “This is also about these young women’s personal safety.”

Mills was also one of the governors who clashed with the Trump administration over her COVID pandemic emergency powers.

In a trip to the state in June 2020, Trump blasted Mills for stalling in regards to reopening the state’s commercial fishing industry, News Center Maine reported.

Dr. Phil’s Media Company Files for Bankruptcy Amid Dispute with broadcast partner Trinity Broadcasting Network

(Bloomberg) – Merit Street Media, the startup founded by celebrity psychologist Phil McGraw, filed for bankruptcy Wednesday in Texas, according to a court filing.

The company reported assets and liabilities in the range of $100 million to $500 million. The company is also suing its broadcast partner Trinity Broadcasting Network, according to a statement from a Merit Street spokesperson.

“Trinity Broadcasting Network is being sued by Merit Street Media for failing to provide clearly agreed-upon national distribution and other significant foundational commitments critical to the network’s continuing success and viability,” the spokesperson said. “The suit is part of a restructuring proceeding also initiated by Merit Street.”

Under a joint venture agreement, Trinity Broadcasting was obligated to provide Merit Street —at no cost— with all of the distribution and production services to launch and operate the new television network. Trinity allegedly failed to provide such services, causing Merit Street to incur “considerable” obligations of about $96 million related to broadcasting agreements, the company said in court documents.

A spokesperson for Trinity Broadcasting didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Peteski Productions has provided “significant debt infusions” — amounting $25 million — from February through May to the company while Merit Street sought out potential equity investors. To support the Chapter 11 process, Peteski has also committed to provide Merit Street with as much as $21.4 million of debtor-in-possession financing, court documents show. Of that amount, $13.4 million is new money, and the rest are rolled-up bridge loans.

McGraw, who parlayed appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show into his own long-running syndicated program, Dr. Phil, founded Merit Street in 2023 after his daytime show ended.

Merit Street runs a television network that includes a talk show hosted by McGraw and a morning news program. The company laid off about 40 employees last month. It had about 66 full-time salaried employees at the time it filed for bankruptcy, including show hosts. McGraw’s programming in recent months has included him embedding with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in immigration raids.

The Chapter 11 stops creditors from taking action against the firm and allows management to either reorganize and cut debt, or try to sell the operations in order to pay creditors.

The case is Merit Street Media, Inc., number 25-80156, in the US Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Texas.

A co-owner and director of Camp Mystic in Kerr County has died as a result of the July 4 flooding, according to a Texas representative.

According to Rep. August Pfluger, Dick Eastland passed away while saving campers from the floods.

In 2016, Justin Walker from The British Constitution Group joined Bristol Broadband Co-operative’s radio show, Dialect Radio, where he discussed his interest in the money system, which began with a conversation with his uncle, Sir Harry Pilkington, who at the time was a director of the Bank of England.

Walker discovered that the Bradbury Pound was a debt-free and interest-free currency created by the Treasury in 1914 to avoid a run on the banks. It was based on the nation’s credit and potential.

They were printed in the space of three days. “They managed to pass an act through Parliament and get this money into the bank by August the 7th [1914]. On August the 3rd, they declared war [World War I]. [On] August the 7th, to stop a run on the banks, people accepted this paper money instead of taking our gold,” Walker said. Sir John signed the notes, and so they became known as Bradbury Notes or Bradbury Pounds.

The Bradbury Pound was a success. “[It] stopped the banks from collapsing in the outbreak of the First World War and effectively it was going to mean that we could have fought the First World War without incurring any major debts,” Walker said.

But the use of the Bradbury Pound was overturned by then-Chancellor of Exchequer David Lloyd George. “He caved in to the central bankers, and so they went back to borrowing money from the private financial sector,” Walker explained.

The Bradbury Pound is the British version. In America, there was the Greenback Dollar. Before the Greenback Dollar, there was the Colonial Script issued by the American colonies. “The City of London, of course, couldn’t make any money out of [Colonial Script] and so they tried to impose the gold standard onto them and to the old-fashioned ways of taking out loans by creating money out of thin air, etc. And that was the real reason for the American War of Independence,” Walker said.

A couple of quick examples. Our company went through a reorganization after our stock lost 50% of its value due to higher payouts because of the sicker population that took the jab! We saw claims rise for some ICD-9 categories by 2000%, cardiovascular, immunological, oncological, just to name a few.

Then last year they discovered that our profitability would still see headwinds, they canceled contracts in areas of high utilization and canceled members that had “excessive claims”.

Additionally, Elon asked that one of his close friends run NASA and, while I thought his friend was very good, I was surprised to learn that he was a blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before. Elon probably was, also. I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon’s corporate life. A TikToker is now one of two men charged in the fatal shooting of a Marine veteran and father after turning himself into Texas authorities this week.

Anthony Sanders, 30, was fatally shot on June 3 around 5 p.m. local time in a parking garage at the Houston Galleria in Houston, police said. Sanders was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Days after 23-year-old Marko Cinan was charged with murder on June 25 and booked into the Harris County Jail, a second man — identified by ABC affiliate KTRK and FOX affiliate KRIV as Justin Guzman — turned himself in on Monday, June 30, at the Harris County Joint Processing Center.

Guzman, 22, is now also charged with murder with a bond set to $750,000 and a court date scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, according to Harris County Jail records. Cinan is due in court on the same day, with his bond set to $1,000,000.

The Houston Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for further information on Friday, July 4.

According to both NBC affiliate KPRC and KTRK, Sanders was with his fiancée and young son at the time of the shooting. KPRC reports that his son is 10 months old.

Israeli authorities have called changes proposed by Palestinian movement Hamas for a truce deal in the Gaza Strip unacceptable, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's adviser Dmitri Gendelman has said.

"Hamas's revisions to the Qatari proposal were handed to us last night and are unacceptable to Israel. After assessing the situation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed us to respond to the invitation for negotiations in an indirect dialogue format and to continue contacts on the subject of returning our hostages - on the basis of the Qatari initiative, which Israel has already accepted," Gendelman said on Telegram on Saturday.

Israeli officials will depart for talks with the Palestinian movement in Qatar on Sunday, Gendelman added.

Earlier this week, Hamas confirmed its positive response to the proposal for a new ceasefire agreement with Israel and its readiness to start negotiations.

On Saturday, the Ynet news portal reported, citing a senior Israeli source, that Israeli authorities decided to send a delegation to Qatar for indirect talks on a ceasefire deal with Hamas.

On June 30, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that Cairo, along with other mediators, was trying to broker a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of a number of Israeli hostages. According to the memo, investigators closely examined footage of Epstein's Manhattan prison cell between around 10:40 pm on Aug. 9, 2019, when Epstein was locked in his cell, and around 6:30 am the next day, when he was found unresponsive.

The footage, which was reviewed by Axios but couldn't be verified independently, showed no one entering the area, the administration said. "The FBI enhanced the relevant footage by increasing its contrast, balancing the color, and improving its sharpness for greater clarity and viewability," the memo says.

Investigators found "no incriminating 'client list' " of Epstein's, "no credible evidence … that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals," and no "evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties," the memo adds.

FIFTEEN Democrats Including Several Democrat Officials Indicted in Frio County Texas Vote Harvesting Scandal Including a Local Judge, Former Rep. Candidate, and Two Former Mayors

Nine more officials were arrested in connection with a voter harvesting scandal in Frio County Texas bringing the total number of indicted officials to 15.

The latest indictments included Manuel Medina, the Texas State Tejano Democrats Chair. Manuel was recorded discussing a scheme to collect votes for Castellano with the Frio County operator.

Former Dilley Mayor Mary Ann Obregon was also indicted on two counts of vote harvesting.

Former Pearsall Mayor Petra Davina Trevino was indicted on one count of vote harvesting.

Back in early May, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of six individuals, including public officials in Frio County, for participating in an illegal vote harvesting scheme.

The individuals were arrested in early May except for the Frio County Judge Rochelle Lozano Camacho who was not processed at the time. Camacho later turned herself in to police and was charged with vote harvesting during her primary election. Camacho had been dealing with medical issues.

According to IJR, Judge Camacho campaigned on a message of “UNITY, MOVEMENT and PROGRESSION FOR FRIO COUNTY.”

Her sister, the county’s trustee, was also arrested in the vote-harvesting scheme.

According to IJR:

The charges stem from a multi-year investigation launched in 2022 after Camacho’s opponent in the Democratic primary runoff, Mary Moore, filed a complaint, San Antonio-based ABC affiliate KSAT reported. Moore accused Camacho of hiring a longtime Democrat operative to gather mail ballots, complete applications, and even drive voters to polling locations. She allegedly paid them between $1,500 and $2,500.

Camacho allegedly targeted elderly voters in a Pearsall, Texas subdivision, Newsweek reported. One of Camacho’s partners in the scheme reportedly concealed ballots under her shirt and used multiple vehicles to avoid detection from investigators.
