Introduction: The Case That Shouldn’t Still Need Making

Each year, thousands of preventable infant hospitalizations occur—many due to conditions that breastmilk could have prevented. And yet, in a culture steeped in pharmacological convenience and institutional amnesia, breastfeeding remains under-promoted, under-supported, and routinely undercut by hospital practices and federal policy.

This isn’t a matter of lifestyle. It’s a matter of biology, immunity, and survival.

In the most comprehensive analysis of its kind to date, we reviewed 600 of the most recent peer-reviewed scientific abstracts published between 2000 and 2024 to quantify how often breastfeeding is cited as providing specific health benefits. The result is a histogram so lopsided in favor of benefit that it makes any remaining skepticism look absurd. This article reports the findings—and explores why so little of this evidence has translated into public policy.

Methods: Parsing the Literature for Direct Benefits

We manually reviewed two batches of abstracts:

300 studies from top-tier journals indexed in PubMed, spanning 2000–2020

300 studies from 2020–2024 selected for relevance and citation quality

An additional 1,240 peer-reviewed papers were screened qualitatively to confirm saturation.

Each abstract was tagged with explicitly stated health benefits of breastfeeding. Synonymous terms were merged (e.g., “otitis media” = “ear infections”), and vague phrases like “supports healthy development” were excluded unless tied to a measurable outcome. False positives and duplicative counts were filtered out. The result was a clean, quantitative ranking of benefits by mention frequency across 600 most recent studies.

Key Benefits Identified in Scientific Literature (2000–2024)

Of the 40 distinct health benefits recorded, some outcomes were referenced dozens of times in the 600-abstract sample. These include:

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) prevention in infants, especially those born preterm Cited in 53% of abstracts—a remarkable consensus.

Visual acuity and retinal development

Cognitive gains and higher IQ scores

Reduced maternal risk of type 2 diabetes

Greater maternal self-efficacy and lower postpartum depression

Lower incidence of childhood asthma, obesity, and type 1 diabetes

Reduced hospital admissions and shorter stays for infected infants

Lower antibiotic use, indirectly reducing AMR (antimicrobial resistance) risk

It is absolutely outrageous that the Austin Fire Chief, Joel G. Baker, would not allow highly trained firefighters from Austin to respond to Kerrville. Because of this egregious dereliction of duty, LIVES WERE VERY LIKELY LOST BECAUSE OF CHIEF BAKER’S DECISION!

Deployment orders came down from the State of Texas on July 2. We would've been pre-deployed before the waters even began to rise!

It is unforgivable that a fire chief would NOT allow his firefighters to answer the call to save lives.

Why would Fire Chief Joel G. Baker do this, you may ask? It was a misguided attempt to save money. I say “misguided” because the fire department is fully reimbursed by the state to deploy. I explained the reimbursement process to Chief Baker last week, and he failed to understand this very simple concept.

We are disgusted with our fire chief. He needs to be held accountable and fired for his disgraceful dereliction of duty.

The Austin Firefighters are starting a vote of no confidence on Tuesday on the fire chief.

As disgusted as we are at our Austin Fire Department leadership, the Austin Firefighters Association made a decision to not air our dirty laundry while victims and bodies were still being recovered. But it's now July 7, and it's time that we hold accountable our disgraced fire chief, AND anybody else in his leadership circle who are responsible for this horrendous act.

The Austin Firefighters commit to being transparent to the community about this process to remove our fire chief and hold all of those accountable who were part of this atrocity.

The firefighters hope we have your support, because it's going to get ugly.

I can't possibly express to you how outraged and sickened the firefighters are that we were not allowed to do the job—the job that we have trained so hard and long to do—during the historic floods that just occurred in Kerrville. We could've made a difference, and we were forced to stand down and lives were lost.

The community deserves a fire chief who cares about the community as much as our firefighters, and that is simply not the case. Joel G. Baker must go!

Pope Francis declined to see Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is demanding a harder Vatican line on China. The Holy See said meeting just before a U.S. election would be inappropriate.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.
