Russia's transportation minister found dead in what officials say was an apparent suicide

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian's transport minister was found dead from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, investigators said Monday — news that broke hours after the Kremlin announced he had been dismissed by President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin did not give a reason for the firing of Roman Starovoit, who served as transport minister since May 2024, and it was unclear when exactly he died and whether it was related to an alleged embezzlement case, as some Russian media suggested.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, the top criminal investigation agency, said the body of Starovoit, 53, was found with a gunshot wound in his car parked in Odintsovo, a neighborhood just west of the capital where members of Russia's elite live. A gun previously presented to him as an official gift was found next to his body.

A criminal probe was launched into the death, and investigators saw suicide as the most likely cause, according to committee's spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko, who did not say when Starovoit died.

Russian media have reported that Starovoit's dismissal could have been linked to an investigation into the embezzlement of state funds allocated for building fortifications in the Kursk region, where he served as governor before being appointed transportation minister.

The alleged embezzlement has been cited as one of the reasons for deficiencies in Russia's defensive lines that failed to stem a surprise Ukrainian incursion in the region launched in August 2024. In the stunning attack, Ukraine's battle-hardened mechanized units quickly overwhelmed lightly armed Russian border guards and inexperienced army conscripts. Hundreds were taken prisoner.

The incursion was a humiliating blow to the Kremlin — the first time the country’s territory was occupied by an invader since World War II.

The Russian military had announced its troops had fully reclaimed the border territory in April — nearly nine months after losing chunks of the region.

Starovoit's successor as Kursk governor, Alexei Smirnov, stepped down in December and was arrested on embezzlement charges in April. Some Russian media have alleged that Starovoit also could have faced charges as part of the investigation.

His dismissal also followed a weekend of travel chaos as Russian airports were forced to ground hundreds of flights due to Ukrainian drone attacks. Most commentators said, however, that the air traffic disruptions have become customary amid frequent Ukrainian drone raids and were unlikely to have triggered his dismissal.

An official order releasing Starovoit from his post was published on the Kremlin’s website Monday morning without giving a reason for his dismissal.

Shortly before the news of Starovoit's death broke, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on the reasons behind his dismissal.

Peskov praised Starovoit’s replacement, Andrei Nikitin, who had been appointed deputy transport minister five months ago.

Zoom out: Axios first reported Sunday that the Justice Department and FBI had written a memo saying they found no evidence Epstein had killed himself, kept a "client list" or extorted powerful figures.

The administration also released video from the hours before Epstein's death showing that nobody else had entered his cell.

The memo said nobody else involved in the Epstein case will be charged and that the administration would not release any material in its possession detailing child sexual abuse or information on Epstein's victims.

Between the lines: Patel and Bongino were both prominent purveyors of conspiracy theories around Epstein's death as influencers prior to Trump's inauguration.

On the 20th anniversary of 7/7, the effects of the Islamist attacks still linger — in the memories of survivors, in the grief of victims’ families, and on the city itself

The morning of July 7, 2005, began like any other. Commuters streamed onto the Underground, clutching briefcases and newspapers, jostling for space on packed platforms. Above ground, red double-decker buses weaved through the city’s streets, collecting passengers.

But at 8.50am, the familiar rhythm of a Thursday morning was shattered. In an instant, three explosions tore through the Underground network. Silence was replaced by screaming, as smoke and flames filled the tunnels and carriages were plunged into darkness.

Almost an hour later, at 9.47am, a fourth explosion tore the roof off the Number 30 bus stationed in Tavistock Square, scattering debris across the street.

What began as a day of routine ended as a day of horror. Four men, carrying homemade explosives, had boarded London’s public transport system and carried out the deadliest single act of terrorism in the UK.

Fifty-two people were killed in the attacks as well as the bombers, and more than 700 people were injured.

Twenty years on, the effects of that day still linger — in the memories of survivors, in the grief of victims’ families, and in the fabric of the city itself.

Survivor Mustafa Kurtuldu, then 24, was on his way to the Home Office to take part in an event celebrating a government project called the Russell Commission — encouraging young people into volunteering — when he was caught up in the blast.

At Liverpool Street Station, he boarded the Circle line. Headphones in and just a carriage away from the blast’s epicentre.

Halfway through the tunnel heading towards Aldgate, Mustafa recalled a loud popping sound, like stepping on a juice carton, and then sudden darkness.

The art student waited 45 minutes to be rescued from the train by emergency services. He heard screams, saw people on the track, and was overwhelmed by awful smells.

“I still have manic episodes”

Staggering out of the station alongside other survivors, he was taken to the hospital in a commandeered bus.

“I still have manic episodes where I break down. My kids have become accustomed to knowing when I zone out,” he told the Standard.

“You don’t get over something like that, you just get used to it. It’s kind of like scar tissue.

“The Netflix documentary has just come out and I watched it this morning and I just stopped. I just broke down and I wasn’t expecting that to happen, it’s been 20 years, but watching the footage of what happened that day again…suddenly all of those memories come back like an avalanche of emotion.”

As a British Muslim, Mustafa recalls the day of the attack differently to many others.

“When police were taking everyone’s name and when they asked for my name they stopped me and searched my bag as soon as they found out what my name was,” he said.

“Then, outside the station, they searched me again. I remember that quite vividly.”

Mustafa explained that he never felt able to process the events solely as a victim. Instead, he often felt pressured to condemn the attack or speak on it specifically as a Muslim.

“I’ve had journalists asking me to explain international terrorism ” he said.

“I was attacked on the street at knifepoint for being a Muslim.

“People were angry at me for voicing my opinion, even people close to me were like ‘you need to shut up’ and ‘why don’t you just tell them we’re a religion of peace.’

“It felt like I was never really allowed to be a straight-out victim. I was expected to apologise for what happened.

“When you compare that to interviews with other survivors, they’re all talking about their personal feelings and how they try to come to terms with it.”

Reflecting on the anniversary, Mustafa emphasised the importance of asking deeper, uncomfortable questions about why the attack happened, arguing that only by understanding the true causes can future tragedies be prevented.

He also criticised the political tendency to deflect blame onto groups like Muslims or asylum seekers, instead of addressing systemic issues or taking responsibility for policies that may contribute to radicalisation.

Martin Byrne, then 24, was working as a civil engineer for Transport for London when he was called to King’s Cross to deal with an emergency on July 7, 2005.

Under the impression he was responding to a power failure, Martin soon realised the situation was a lot more serious than he first thought.

“When I got down to Kings Cross, I was really surprised actually at how little control there appeared to be. All the passengers had evacuated the whole area.

“I walked around the station trying to find someone in charge and then I found a policeman at the top of the escalators. I introduced myself and asked what was going on and then some other people turned up.

“About five minutes later an emergency responder came up the escalator asking for blankets and we thought ‘God it’s the middle of the summer’.

“And then he said ‘no, they’re to cover the bodies’. We asked ‘how many do you need?’ and he said ‘bring as many as you can’.

“That’s when we realised this was deadly serious.

“A victim I saw was being stretchered up the stairwell and he had on a dark pinstriped suit and he’d lost a leg. He was in a really bad way and was unconscious.

“That was the confirmation we needed that we were dealing with something that none of us were really prepared for.”

Martin praised the team of engineers and station staff who worked tirelessly for several hours in the dark to assist the walking wounded—fetching blankets, moving water supplies, and carrying victims to waiting ambulances.

He acknowledged the extraordinary human effort, noting how engineers and staff went far beyond their duties—pulling people from trains and doing everything possible to ensure victims received the help they needed.

“Very few people have ever been faced with those kind of images,” Martin said.

“There were some people who were very noisy and those who were very quiet and it’s the quiet people that really needed the help, the ones who were slipping away.

“After that I just walked back to my office and that felt quite surreal. It was only a ten-minute walk, but I had other people’s blood on me and I just walked back and sat at my desk.

“There were some people at the office that still didn’t know what had happened.”

That night, Martin and his team were dispatched to inspect the tunnels at Edgware Road, where they were confronted with the harrowing aftermath of the day’s events.

“Nothing had been cleaned at that point. There was mess inside and outside of the train and obviously there was this big gaping hole in the top,” he said.

Martin’s job was to locate the blast site and to assess the damage caused to the tunnel.

“Maybe it's a testament to the train, or maybe the Victorian tunnel, but the tunnel was really not damaged,” he said.

“There were scorch marks along the tunnel where the train had opened up like a burst can and the metal had scraped along the brickwork, but the tunnel was fine.”

Large scaffolding systems were delivered and stored near the site, and streets were sealed off as teams worked throughout the following week to recover the train, which had to be removed with a large crane.

As the crane was extremely large and heavy, the road had to be dug up and reinforced before it could be brought in.

Once the groundwork was complete, the damaged carriage was moved into the station, lifted onto a flatbed, carefully wrapped and transported by road to its destination.

Reflecting on his role, Martin said: ”I’d only been in the underground for four years, but at that point it was difficult to think anything other than we just need to get on with it.

“In hindsight, to have that experience at the start of my career, it taught me how to deal with emergency situations. I’m a manager now and I can pass on that experience to my team.”

Martin said he still thinks about 7/7 often, as it shaped the way he approaches his work.

He admitted there are a dozen vivid images from that day that play on repeat in his mind.

In many ways, London swiftly returned to normal after the 7/7 bombings.

The Tube resumed 85% of its operations the very next day. While some services remained disrupted, many Underground stations and bus routes were back in service relatively quickly.

Though fear and anxiety lingered in the aftermath, the response from the public and emergency services—both on the day and in the days that followed — was a powerful display of London’s resilience and defiance in the face of terrorism.

Commemorating 7/7 continues to send a collective message of unity, courage, and solidarity in the face of fear and violence.

A memorial service to mark the 20th anniversary of the 7/7 bombings will take place on Monday at 11.30am.

GREENBELT, Maryland (Reuters) -A U.S. judge on Monday ruled that Kilmar Abrego’s legal challenge to his wrongful deportation to El Salvador will continue despite the Trump administration’s decision to bring him back to the United States to face criminal charges.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland found that there were ongoing issues to resolve in the case, including whether the Trump administration had fully complied with prior orders to facilitate Abrego’s return and allow his immigration case to be handled as though he had not been improperly deported.

Lawyers for the Trump administration had argued the case should be moot given Abrego’s return this month to face U.S. charges accusing him of unlawfully transporting migrants living illegally in the United States. Abrego has pleaded not guilty.

On June 1, President Donald Trump issued a statement to commemorate Global Coptic Day. Among other things, he said:

“Today, I join the Coptic Orthodox Christian community in observing Global Coptic Day… Tracing its roots to Saint Mark, the apostle of Jesus Christ and the evangelist who brought the Christian faith to Egypt in the first century, the Coptic Church has been a beacon of Christendom in Africa for nearly 2,000 years. The Coptic community has left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions of Christians — most evidently seen in their timeless contributions to Christian theology and culture. This Global Coptic Day, we also pause to reflect upon the vicious and ongoing persecution of Coptic Orthodox Christians in Africa and across the Middle East. In 2015, 21 Coptic construction workers were brutally executed by ISIS terrorists in Libya. Like persecuted Christians all around the world, these heroic martyrs refused to renounce their faith. They exemplified sacrificial love and steadfast devotion to God, even in the face of certain death. The Copts’ persistence amid relentless persecution is a living testament to their unbreakable resolve and fearless dedication to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Trump’s statement is obviously powerful, but it’s more than that — it is rare. Unlike his predecessors, Trump has consistently acknowledged the brutal and ongoing persecution of Christians in the Muslim world, especially in Egypt, where Copts have long endured systemic violence, discrimination, and neglect.

And that persecution continues till this day.One week after Trump’s statement, the Virgin Mary Church in Luxor, Egypt, became the latest to go up in flames. So-called “accidental” church fires have become disturbingly commonplace in Egypt, with authorities reflexively ruling out arson often before an investigation even begins.

But Wait … There’s Worse

Even more disturbing are theroutine disappearances of Coptic women and girls. The latest high-profile case is that of Mariam Medhat Ramzy, who vanished on May 25. Abductions like hers are as common as they are rarely investigated seriously, if at all.

Add to this the frequent collective punishments inflicted onChristian communities when one of their members is perceived as overstepping their “place.” Just last week, in Minya, mobs of Muslims rioted, shouting “Allahu Akbar” while torching dozens of Christian homes.The spark? A Copt had the temerity to install a mobile booster on his own roof.

In this context, Trump’s words matter. They stand in stark contrast to the studied silence — or worse, moral equivalence — of his predecessors, Barack Obama and Joe Biden.Trump is, without question, the only U.S. president in modern history to directly and repeatedly confront the persecution of Christians in the Muslim world.

Nor is this a new position for Trump. During his first term, he addressed the issue bluntly. In 2020, he remarked on the “ongoing challenges facing the largest Christian group [Copts] in the Middle East,” emphasizing the need to “acknowledge the importance of religious freedom” and to “reaffirm our commitment to promoting and defending this core tenet of a free society.”

That year, he also called the treatment of Christians in the region “beyond disgraceful,” saying Christianity was being “treated horribly and very unfairly — it’s criminal.”

Perhaps most memorably, following the 2017 massacre of 28 Copts — including 10 children — by Islamic gunmen in Egypt, Trump stated:

“This merciless slaughter of Christians in Egypt tears at our hearts and grieves our souls… America makes clear to its friends, allies, and partners that the treasured and historic Christian communities of the Middle East must be defended and protected. The bloodletting of Christians must end, and all who aid their killers must be punished.”

This kind of moral equivalence was a hallmark of the Obama administration. In his ideological framework, Christians are always the “oppressors” and non-Christians the “oppressed,” regardless of the facts. That’s why, when Muslim extremists bombed three churches in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday in 2019, killing nearly 300 Christians,both Obama and Hillary Clinton issued statements lamenting an attack on “Easter worshippers.” Not Christians — “Easter worshippers.”

They could not bring themselves to name the victims, because doing so would disrupt the narrative.

Not only did Obama fail to acknowledge (much less do anything about) the Muslim persecution of Christians, he aided and abetted it (see numerous old articles and documented reports I wrote, starting back in 2012, here, here, here, here). In other words, there’s a reason that Trump has repeatedly said, “President Obama is the founder of ISIS.”

The Nigerian Problem

But it is perhaps in the context ofNigeria, where a bonafide genocide of Christianshas been taking placesince Obama first entered the White House, that the differences between him and Biden, on the one hand, and Trump on the other emerge most clearly.Keep in mind that, on average, a Nigerian Christian is killed for his religion every two hours.

Despite this, theObama administration refused for years to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), despite the ongoing slaughter of Christians there by Boko Haram and other jihadist groups. Hillary Clinton’s State Department even resisted labeling Boko Haram a terrorist organization — despite its record of murdering Christians and bombing churches at a scale exceeding that of ISIS.

Not until Trump came to power in 2020 was Nigeria finally designated a CPC. And unlike his predecessors,Trump didn’t mince words.

During a meeting withNigerian President Muhammadu Buhari — a man many Nigerians say Obama helped install — Trump asked him directly: “Why are you killing Christians?”

Contrast that with the Biden administration. In 2021, under Secretary of State AntonyBlinken, Nigeria was quietly removed from the CPC list. Human rights observers were appalled. As attorney Sean Nelson said at the time:

“No explanations have been given that could justify this decision. If anything, the situation in Nigeria has grown worse over the last year.Thousands of Christians are targeted, killed, and kidnapped, and the government is simply unwilling to stop these atrocities… Removing CPC status for Nigeria will only embolden the increasingly authoritarian government there.”

In short, at a time when truth is suffocating under the weight of politics and propaganda, Trump’s words about persecuted Christians matter. They are a rare acknowledgment of reality — and a crucial first step toward change.

POTUS admits that his Past Advisors advised him to accept the bad advice of the Legal Team at the Federalist Society and that he accepted their advice "openly and freely".

POTUS goes on to call these people "Backroom "Hustlers" " and that they "must not be allowed to destroy our Nation".

POTUS says that he is "very disappointed in others." meaning that many judges that the Trump admin had seated, "more than any other", are enemies of POTUS and MAGA because of Leonard Leo and the Fine people at the Federalist Society.

The U.S. Court of International Trade incredibly ruled against the United States of America on desperately needed Tariffs but, fortunately, the full 11 Judge Panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court has just stayed the order by the Manhattan-based Court of International Trade.

Where do these initial three Judges come from? How is it possible for them to have potentially done such damage to the United States of America?

Is it purely a hatred of “TRUMP?” What other reason could it be?

I was new to Washington, and it was suggested that I useThe Federalist Societyas a recommending source on Judges.

I did so, openly and freely, but then realized that they were under the thumb ofa real “sleazebag” named Leonard Leo, a bad person who, in his own way, probably hates America, and obviously has his own separate ambitions.

He openly brags how he controls Judges, and even Justices of the United States Supreme Court — I hope that is not so, and don’t believe it is!

In any event, Leo left The Federalist Society to do his own “thing.” I am so disappointed in The Federalist Society because of the bad advice they gave me on numerous Judicial Nominations.

This is something that cannot be forgotten!With all of that being said, I am very proud of many of our picks, but very disappointed in others.

They always must do what’s right for the Country!

In this case, it is only because of my successful use of Tariffs that many Trillions of Dollars have already begun pouring into the U.S.A. from other Countries, money that, without these Tariffs, we would not be able to get.

In other words, hundreds of politicians would sit around D.C. for weeks, and even months, trying to come to a conclusion as to what to charge other Countries that are treating us unfairly.

If allowed to stand, this would completely destroy Presidential Power — The Presidency would never be the same! This decision is being hailed all over the World by every Country, other than the United States of America.

Radical Left Judges, together with some very bad people, are destroying America. Under this decision, Trillions of Dollars would be lost by our Country, money that will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.

It would be the harshest financial ruling ever leveled on us as a Sovereign Nation. The President of the United States must be allowed to protect America against those that are doing it Economic and Financial harm.
