Liberian president impresses Trump with ‘good English’

Joseph Boakai was one of five African leaders hosted at the White House for talks on Wednesday

 

United States President Donald Trump has intensely praised Liberian President Joseph Boakai for his command of the English language, after the latter spoke briefly about his desire to elevate ties with the US.

 

On Wednesday, Trump, flanked by several United States officials, sat at the table with leaders from five African countries who are visiting Washington.

Trump hosted leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal at the White House for diplomatic talks and a televised working lunch.

 

Analysts said the three-day meetings will focus on alleviating the effects of 10% tariffs imposed on the African countries on their goods exported to the United States.

 

When the turn came for Boakai, he said Liberia supports the policy of making America great again.

 

”Mr. President, we thank you for this opportunity to be here. Liberia is a longtime friend of the United States and we believe in your policy of making America great again.We also go a long way with you, with your economic diplomacy that has to do with economic development and commercial friendship.

 

“Liberia has a lot of minerals. Also, we are committed to peace, and we have been very lucky within our region. We are a country that has a series of democratic elections,” he said.

 

Boakai said he would like to encourage American investment in Liberia.

 

”We want to work with the United States in peace and security within the region. We are committed to that. We just want to thank you so much for this opportunity,” he said.

 

As soon as Boakai concluded, Trump responded: “Well thank you, and such good English. Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? You were educated where?”

 

With a chuckle, Boakai told Trump that he was educated in Liberia.

 

Trump responded: “In Liberia?

 

Boakai responded: “Yes sir”.

 

Trump added: “That’s very interesting. That’s a beautiful language too. I have people at this table who can’t speak nearly as well.”

 

English is the official language in Liberia. The country on the coast of West Africa, Liberia, was founded in 1822 as a colony for freed American slaves. Liberia’s flag, also known as Lone Star, has striking similarity to the United States flag.

 

After Boakai, President of Gabon, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema also addressed Trump, commending him for brokering peace between Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda.

 

”Africa is a vast continent that has many problems and we truly count on you for your assistance in Sudan, and in the Sahel (region) because no investment can be made when there is a war. For investment, you need peace,” said Nguema.

 

In his address,President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, praised Trump’s golf skills, inviting him to build a golf course in Senegal.

 

“I was wondering what your secret was, for resolving all these complex crises. I know you are a tremendous golf player. Golf requires concentration and precision, qualities that also make for a great leader.

 

“Senegal has exceptional opportunities to offer, including in the area of tourism.So, perhaps an investment could be made in a golf course in Senegal. It would just be six hours by flight from New York, from Miami, from Europe or from the Gulf and that would be an opportunity for you to show off your skills on the golf course too. Thank you for your attention, sir.”

 

A visibly impressed Trump responded:“Nice, somewhere to show off my skills. It’s a long trip to show off my skill, but that’s very nice”.

 

Trump added: “He’s led a very interesting life. He looks like a very young person — he’s a little older than he looks — but a fantastic job. He was treated very unfairly by his government, and he prevailed, and so congratulations on that.”

 

Faye, born on 25 March 1980, went from political prisoner in 2023 to the first opposition candidate to win the presidency since 1960. Faye won the 2024 Senegalese presidential election at the age of 44, becoming the youngest elected president in the country’s history.

Eventually diagnosed with HPDL deficiency, a rare genetic condition that inhibits the body’s ability to produce sufficient levels of coenzyme Q10, a compound critical to cell function.

 

CoQ10

 

Without adequate CoQ10, patients struggle with muscle control, walking and are at a higher risk of seizures.

 

The boy in question was placed on a protocol of CoQ10 supplements — but the pills could only help to a certain extent, as the enzyme is too large to cross the blood-brain barrier.

 

‘[CoQ10] is safe. It’s reasonably effective at treating symptoms outside of the brain, but almost completely ineffective at treating symptoms within the brain, because it doesn’t get through the blood-brain barrier,’ Michael Pacold, an associate professor of radiation oncology at NYU Langone and one of the study authors, told STAT.

 

But 4-HB is a building block of CoQ10 — and, helpfully, it’s thin enough to cross the blood-brain barrier and can be condensed into a powder that is dissolved in a water solution.

 

After stopping his CoQ10 supplements, the boy began taking a 4-HB supplement in a 600ml solution. Equivalent to nearly three glasses of water, the liquid cure often caused him to vomit.

This was eventually reduced to a 300ml solution, or just over one glass of water.

 

However, the upchuck was worth the upturn, as within a month of receiving treatment, the boy was walking again, and even completed a nearly mile-long trek across Central Park.

 

Now, Pacold and his team are working on a larger study to test the approach on a larger group of children.

US Sanctions UN Expert For Pushing ICC Case Against Israel

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced the United States will be imposing sanctions on the United Nations (UN) special rapporteuron human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, accusing her of anti-Semitism, and supporting terrorism.

 

“Today I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt [International Criminal Court] action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives,” Rubio wrote in a statement on July 9 posted to the social media platform X.

 

The Epoch Times reached out to a spokesperson for Albanese for comment.

An Italian attorney and academic, Albanese has served in her role at the UN since May 2022.She has advocated for the UN Human Rights Council to impose an arms embargo and end trade and financial ties with Israel.

 

Albanese accused Israel of overseeing a “genocidal campaign” in Gaza while at war with Hamas.

 

The International Criminal Court has alleged Israel is guilty of war crimes, and the International Court of Justice has made allegations of genocide over the nation’s military efforts against Hamas in Gaza. Israel has denied the accusations and maintains that its actions are self-defense after Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack on southern Israel.

 

In an early July report, Albanese accused more than 60 companies, including weapons manufacturers and technology businesses, of aiding Israeli settlements and military efforts in Gazaand suggested that Israel is benefiting from the support.

 

“The report reveals how the forever-occupation has become the ideal testing ground for arms manufacturers and big tech—providing boundless supply and demand, little oversight and zero accountability—while investors and private and public institutions profit freely,” she wrote.

 

Israel’s mission in Geneva called the report “legally groundless, defamatory, and a flagrant abuse of her office.”

 

In a longer statement posted to the State Department’s website,Rubio accused Albanese of anti-Semitism, supporting terrorism, and having “open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West.”

 

He also described Albanese’s report asa campaign of “political and economic warfare.”

 

“She has recentlyescalated this effort by writing threatening letters to dozens of entities worldwide, including major American companies across finance, technology, defense, energy, and hospitality,making extreme and unfounded accusations and recommendingthe [International Criminal Court] pursue investigations and prosecutions of these companies and their executives,” Rubio said.

 

Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnes Callamard, a former UN special rapporteur, also denounced the sanctions.

 

“Governments around the world and all actors who believe in the rule-based order and international law must do everything in their power to mitigate and block the effect of the sanctions against Francesca Albanese and more generally to protect the work and independence of Special Rapporteurs,” Callamard wrote in a statement.

 

As a special rapporteur, Albanese is required by the UN Human Rights Council to report on specific topics and crises. The views of special rapporteurs are not reflective of the UN as a whole.

While it is clear that evil continues to triumph, it isn't fair to say that good men have done nothing entirely. While many haven't, others have but they still need to do more. Hamas in a rare statement at a moment 'indirect' talks with Israel are underway has said it is willing to release 10 living Israeli hostages held in Gaza and to return of the bodies of 18 deceased hostages, in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire - a plan which is reportedly being backed by US special Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff.

 

Witkoff has said he is hopeful, but there's as yet no indications that Israel will agree, and this isn't too unlike prior failed proposals which were on the table, where the 'devil is in the details'.

 

A senior Israeli official was quoted Wednesday in international reports as saying that while a Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release agreement between could potentially be reached within one to two weeks, it's unlikely such a deal will come together in merely a day.The signaling is that a full truce is still a long shot.

 

After spending a lot of time at the White House, and in at least two meetings with President Trump, Israeli PMBenjamin Netanyahu has downplayed and rejected reports of friction between the two leaders.

 

"In pursuing this common goal, we have a common strategy," he told reporters. "Not only do we have a common strategy, we have common tactics. This doesn't involve pressure, doesn't involve coercion, it involves full coordination."

 

The prime minister made clear, however, thathe's unwilling to pursue a hostage deal "at any price."

 

"President Trump wants a deal, but not at any price. I want to deal, but not at any price," he continued. "Israel has security requirements and other requirements, and we're working together to try to achieve it."

 

His words after the Washington trip strongly suggests a long-haul ahead, given Bibi's goals clearly remain the complete disarming and eradication of Hamas in the Gaza Strip:

 

"I completed a second meeting with President Trump," Netanyahu told reporters before a meeting with Senate Majority Leader John Thune. "I want to inform you something that will shock the various reports that came out.President Trump and I have a common goal. We want to achieve the release of our hostages. We want to end Hamas rule in Gaza. We want to make sure that Gaza does not pose a threat to Israel anymore."(Bibi is a fucking liar, Trump does not have common goals with him, Bibi had negated any idea by Trump of ending this. Trump should force Bibi off to negotiate with the Gulf States leading it. The US doesn’t have common goals or strategies with him.)

 

If the military goal remains disarming Hamas, then this war is set to go on for much longer, especially given that Hamas continues utilizing the vast tunnel network under Gaza to mount ambushes and quick insurgent attacks on Israeli ground forces.

 

The Israeli military continues to take on casualties, including days ago an IED explosion and follow-up gunfire which claimed the lives of five personnel, and which wounded fourteen more.

Two thirds of all federal law enforcement funding in the United States forfiscal year 2025 is going to immigration and border enforcement, according to a CATO Institute analysis of data from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

 

Together, immigration and border enforcementwill receive more than $33 billion.

 

This includes funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at $19 billion, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at $10 billion, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) at $281 million, the Department of Homeland Security's general offices at $3.2 billion and 20 percent of the Coast Guard's budget - approximately $2.2 billion.

 

However, as Statista's Anna Fleck reports, CATO notes thatthe actual value is even higher, as the Trump administration is “diverting thousands of agents from other federal law enforcement agencies and much of the military to enforcing immigration and border law.”

According to CATO analysts, theamount spent on immigration and border enforcement agencies is 36 times higher than spending on tax and financial crimes enforcement(IRS-Treasury), 21 times higher than funding for firearms enforcement (ATF), 13 times higher than on drug enforcement (DEA), 10 times higher than spending on the Secret Service and 8 times higher than the FBI budget.

 

These figures are based on current calculations anddo not yet reflect the additional increases expected under H.R. 1 - the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The CBP projects that this will direct an extra $168 billion over the coming years to immigration and border enforcement agencies, along with more funding for agencies that indirectly support immigration law enforcement.

 

Unlike normal fiscal year appropriations,H.R. 1 makes these funds available over five years, though they can be accessed for up to 10 years, so long as they are committed by 2029.

US President Donald Trump has threatened Brazil with a crippling 50% tariff, citing the treatment of the South American nation’s former leader, Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial for allegedly attempting to overturn his defeat in the country’s 2022 election.

 

Brazil’s prosecutor general has charged Bolsonaro with attempting a coup to stay in power after his 2022 loss. The charges include an alleged plot to kill his successor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

 

In a letter addressed to Lula and published on Wednesday on the Truth Social platform, Trump demanded an end to what he called a “witch hunt” against the “highly respected” Bolsonaro.

 

“Starting from August 1, 2025, we will charge Brazil a Tariff of 50% on any and all Brazilian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs,” Trump wrote, warning of further hikes if Brazil retaliates.

The US is Brazil’s second-largest trade partner after China. According to US Census Bureau data, American exports to Brazil last year included aircraft and spacecraft, fuels, nuclear reactors, and electrical equipment.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday issued arrest warrants for two senior Taliban officials. The international body has long been accused of political bias for predominantly going after individuals from Africa and Asia while allegedly overlooking Western crimes.

 

The warrants target Haibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s supreme leader who led the group to victory over the US-backed government in Kabul in 2021 following two decades of insurgency, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, Afghanistan’s current chief justice.

 

Prosecutors allege the two are responsible for widespread persecution tied to the Taliban’s strict enforcement of gender policies since returning to power. Western nations do not recognize the current Islamist government in Kabul, but Russia formally accepted an ambassador this month, citing the Taliban’s efforts to combat terrorism.

 

According to the ICC, Afghan authorities have engaged in murder, imprisonment, torture, rape and enforced disappearances – actions it said constitute severe human rights violations. The Pre-Trial Chamber II, which issued the warrants, kept their specifics sealed, citing the need to “protect victims and witnesses and safeguard the proceedings.”

 

The court lacks its own enforcement mechanism and depends on signatories of the Rome Statute, its founding treaty, to carry out arrests. Afghanistan ratified the treaty in 2003, but the Taliban administration formally rejected ICC jurisdiction in February.

President Donald Trump plans to use the authority granted to him under a foreign assistance law to send more defensive weapons to aid Ukraine in its war with Russia, Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with the decision.

 

One source told the outlet that the military aid could be worth as much as $300 million.

Trump plans to send the aid using the Presidential Drawdown Authority, according to Reuters. That power is granted to the executive under the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 and allows the president to respond quickly to foreign crises by reallocating existing U.S. military supplies.

 

The president's decision comes after he sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this week and said the U.S. would send more military aid to Ukraine, saying, "We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves."

 

Trump's statement was a reversal of the Pentagon's announcement last week that it was turning the tap off on some military aid to Ukraine. The announcement caught the president "flat-footed" and he privately expressed frustration that the Pentagon didn't coordinate more with the White House about it, the Associated Press reported.

 

Trump was pressed by reporters about on Tuesday about who at the Pentagon ordered the pause in aid, to which he responded: "I don't know. You tell me.

 

He was asked again about it on Wednesday.

Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky claimed he had no idea about the atrocities committed by the Ukrainian Nazi collaborators during the World War II until confronted on the issue by Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, the latter has told the Polish RMF24 broadcaster.

 

According to the president, Zelensky’s claim shows that Ukrainians are kept in the dark about their nation’s dark past. “He said to me: ‘Andrzej, I've never heard of the murders, the killing of Poles in western Ukraine, in Volhynia. They didn't teach us about it in school’,” Duda said, recounting one of his meetings with the Ukrainian leader.

 

The president was referring to the infamous Volyn massacre, which has long been a flashpoint in Ukrainian-Polish relations. Militants with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) slaughtered up to 100,000 Poles between 1943 and 1945 in the regions of Volhynia and Eastern Galicia, which currently belong to Ukraine. Both the UPA and the OUN were collaborating with the Nazis during the WWII.

 

Many of the Ukrainian ultranationalist leaders, including the OUN head, Stepan Bandera, a notorious Nazi collaborator, are widely revered in modern Ukraine. According to Duda, Ukrainians are ignorant about the crimes of the past. A belief that the knowledge of Ukraine’s “difficult history” is common among them is “wrong,” according to the Polish president.

 

It is not the first time Duda has expressed his concerns about Ukraine’s approach to its own past. In September 2024, he told Polsat News that “Ukrainians have many problems with their history,” including “the Volyn massacre … service in SS units, collaboration with the authorities of the Third Reich, and participation in the Holocaust.”

 

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry released a statement on Thursday, saying that historical events should be studied and discussed “without politicization.”

 

“On the eve of the day when the Republic of Poland commemorates the victims of the Volyn tragedy, Ukraine shares the pain and grief of the Polish people. At the same time, we do not forget about the numerous Ukrainians who became innocent victims of interethnic violence, political repression and deportation on the territory of Poland,” the statement continued.

 

Warsaw has been one of Kiev’s strongest supporters since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022. Poland also provided a key logistics hub used to transport between 80-90% of NATO-supplied military equipment and ammunition to Ukraine.

 

Ukrainian authorities continue to glorify Nazi collaborators despite concerns expressed by its Western backers. In February, a Ukrainian city of Rivne celebrated the 120th birthday of Nazi collaborator and prominent anti-Semitic propagandist Ulas Samchuk, who called for mass killings of Jews and Poles during the WWII. Less than a month later, Ukrainian nationalists commemorated the 75th anniversary of the death of the UPA leader, Roman Shukhevich, with a torchlit march as well as unveiled a museum dedicated to him.

Until recently, Brown served as a vice president at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., the premier entertainment venue in the nation’s capital.

He was told, “You must recant your belief in traditional marriage and your past statements on the topic, or you will be fired.’”

 

When his conscience prevented him from doing so, he was immediately terminated.

 

“I never imagined they would cancel me,” Brown said, and that “they would get such an upper hand in our society, that our society would become so numb to sin and make-believe that they could turn the tables and start canceling Christians for having very orthodox beliefs.”
