28 ‘Ndrangheta associates arrested for drug trafficking and violence

 

Italian and Albanian nationals trafficked drugs from South America to Europe, ultimately selling them in Rome

 

Europol has supported Italian law enforcement in dealing a heavy blow to the ‘Ndrangheta criminal organisation. In an action day conducted on 8 July 2025 across Italy, Spain and Albania, special intervention teams have arrested 28 suspected criminals of Italian and Albanian nationality. Among the individuals taken into custody is an Italian national from the Calabria region suspected of setting up the criminal structure for cocaine trade in the San Basilio area of Rome.

 

This individual, together with his three sons, is suspected of closely collaborating with an Albanian criminal group, which handled some of the logistical aspects of the drug trafficking trade. The Albanian members of this network allegedly organised the extraction of shipments from various Spanish and Dutch ports as well as the subsequent transport to Italy. In addition, they were responsible for the drug sale in other parts of Rome.

 

Investigations show that the cocaine sold in Italy was acquired in South America and transported in containers to ports across Europe. The transport from the Gioia Tauro harbour in Calabria to Rome was allegedly facilitated by Calabrian criminal brokers.

 

Torture as a tool to instil fear within the criminal organisation

The arrested individuals are suspected to have trafficked at least 1 019 kilograms of cocaine and 1 497 kg of hashish in 80 trafficking operations. Prosecutors suspect four Italian individuals of having kidnapped a drug dealer, causing him physical and psychological harm – an example of the severe violence associated with the ‘Ndrangheta criminal organisation. The torture inflicted was filmed with a mobile phone, with the video subsequently spread in order to instil fear, silence and submission within members of the criminal group located in Rome.

 

This complex investigation also brought to light the sophisticated communication methods used to exchange information within the criminal organisation. To evade discovery by the authorities, its members would rely on encrypted messaging via devices distributed by an Albanian criminal service provider, who was also arrested on 8 July.

 

Europol support and international collaboration

On the action day, a Europol expert with a mobile office was deployed to Italy to cross-check information against Europol’s databases. Europol provided financial analytical support and facilitated the information exchange between Italian and Spanish authorities, leading to five arrests in Spain over the course of the investigation, prior to the action day.

Starmer has signed up to the UN’s agreement to raise taxes in the UK

 

According to The Telegraph, the UK government, led by Sir Keir Starmer, has endorsed the United Nations’ (“UN’s”) Sevilla Commitment, a global agreement that calls for greater environmental levies and “gender-responsive taxation.” The Conservative Party has criticised it for potentially making it harder for a future government to reverse Labour’s tax rises.

 

The agreement, signed by 192 countries at a summit in Seville, Spain, contains 42 references to taxation, including specific mentions of taxes on “high net-worth individuals,” tobacco, alcohol, natural resources and pollution, as well as promoting higher taxes on unhealthy products such as sugary drinks.

The agreement encourages the “broadening of the tax base,” including a crackdown on the “informal sector,” which includes cash-in-hand payments, and suggests specific tax rises that countries should introduce, such as effective taxation of natural resources and taxes on tobacco and alcohol.

 

A Government spokesman has stated that the agreement is not legally binding and that UK tax-setting powers are for the Chancellor and the Chancellor alone, with no plans to cede tax-setting powers to an international organisation, and that the agreement is designed to support developing countries in mobilising more finance for their own sustainable development.

 

The UK has also signed up to several declarations drawn up during the conference in Seville, including one that promotes higher taxes on unhealthy products and another that focuses on efforts to remove “harmful” and “ineffective” tax reliefs, amid fears that Labour is lining up a series of fresh tax raids in the autumn to fill an estimated £30 billion “black hole.”

BlackRock's ETF Holdings Top 700,000 Bitcoin; Far Above Saylor's 'Strategy'

 

BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund has just crossed over 700,000 BTC in assets under management, far surpassing Michael Saylor's stash at (Micro)Strategy.

 

As The Block reports, the combined assets held by all U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs are now at approximately 1.25 million BTC ($135 billion), according to CoinGlass data - nearly 6% of bitcoin's total 21 million supply.

 

IBIT accounts for approximately 56% of that AUM alone - greater than Strategy's 597,325 BTC ($65 billion) stack, for comparison.

 

Meanwhile, as CoinTelegraph reports, US Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, combined with Michael Saylor’s Strategy, the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, have purchased more Bitcoin than the supply generated by miners almost every month so far this year, according to Galaxy Research.

 

Strategy and the US Bitcoin ETFs have collectively bought Bitcoin worth $28.22 billion in 2025, while Bitcoin miners’ net new issuance has amounted to $7.85 billion during the same period.

 

As of June, the combined entities have bought more Bitcoin than the new supply being generated each month, except in February, when the combined entities sold Bitcoin worth $842 million.

Axios White House reporter Marc Caputo told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" spoke about that website's scoop that the FBI and DOJ have concluded that there never was an "Epstein client list" and the infamous sex offender really did kill himself inside federal prison.

 

MARC CAPUTO, AXIOS: We had another story in Axios that ran last night from my colleague Alex Isenstadt, where the Department of Justice has, in the Epstein case, decided, “We're not going to release all of the records related to that.” Oh, by the way, Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide. There is no client list, and that's that.

 

I think if there's one thing we learned from the JFK case, it's probably a good idea in these instances to never disclose. But the administration in this case has decided not to do that. However, in the JFK case, they are—and people who have been very critical of the CIA are saying at least John Ratcliffe, who's the head of the CIA, and Tulsi Gabbard, the Director of National Intelligence, are taking this seriously.

 

JOE SCARBOROUGH: So, the reporting from Axios says that the DOJ is saying there is no evidence that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein kept a list of high-profile clients. And yeah, talk about the complication of that for the DOJ and for others. Kash Patel—the Director of the FBI—and especially the Deputy Director, Assistant Director, Dan Bongino, he used to be a podcaster and was one of the largest proponents of the idea that there's an Epstein list, that this is a cover-up, that this reaches to the highest level. Then he winds up being the number two guy at the FBI, and now he's like, “Oh, well, I've looked at the evidence. All of that's not true.”

 

So of course, this branches two ways: either Bongino has been corrupted by the very conspiracy that he claimed exists, or the conspiracy really didn’t exist. And it turns out that doing your job as a sworn law enforcement officer in a government agency that is governing is a lot harder than podcasting. And at a certain point, the facts matter.

 

We don't have, obviously, all the access to all of the information. So we can't say, certainly. Jeffrey Epstein, who was a person of great interest and was incarcerated in a federal lockup, having committed suicide when he was under suicide watch, is very suspicious. However, the FBI has released what it says are the ten hours of video footage showing no one went into his cell. So from the evidence we have right now, it does look as if what DOJ is saying is the truth.

 

But once again, we don't have all the records. And what we've seen in the JFK case is—more transparency is probably better, not less.

Ukraine threatens new invasion of two Russian regions

Kiev’s top commander has urged a renewed push into Kursk and Belgorod despite Russia’s full recapture of the area and ongoing peace talks

 

==Ukraine’s commander-in-chief, Aleksandr Syrsky, has called for the re-establishment of Kiev’s military positions in Russia’s Kursk and Belgorod Regions. The proposal comes despite the failure of Ukraine’s past incursion attempts– and the resumption of peace negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.

 

In late April, Russia announced that it had fully regained control of Kursk Region after months of fighting and expelled all Ukrainian units from occupied settlements. The following month, Russian President Vladimir Putin personally visited the region to oversee restoration efforts.

 

Kiev’s forces have since continued their attempts to break through the border, but have been unable to re-establish a foothold.

 

On Tuesday, Syrsky reported that he had attended ameeting chaired by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, during which the commander had “emphasized the restoration of positions and holding territories in the Kursk and Belgorod regions of the Russian Federation.”Syrsky did not elaborate on how such objectives could be achieved.

 

Ukraine has continued to face mounting challenges on the battlefield,including a severe manpower shortage and diminishing weapons supplies. Last week, the US reportedly halted all weapon shipments to Kiev, citing an internal stockpile review.

 

On Sunday, Bild reported that Kiev had requested a variety of weapons from Germany valued at billions of euros. The request allegedly includes WiSENT demining vehicles, which were previously utilized by Ukrainian forces during their last unsuccessful incursion.

 

Kiev launched its thrust into the Russian border region in August 2024. While initially managing to capture a number of settlements, Ukraine’s offensive was soon halted, and its forces were gradually pushed out.

 

During a recent appearance at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum,Putin described the Ukrainian campaign in Kursk as a “catastrophe,” saying it resulted in over 76,000 Ukrainian casualties. He stated thatUkraine’s combat units are now manned at just 47% of their required strength.

 

Syrsky’s call to re-enter Kursk and Belgorod also comes amid renewed diplomatic efforts between Russia and Ukraine. Direct negotiations resumed in Istanbul earlier this year, with both sides exchanging prisoners and drafting preliminary memorandums on a potential ceasefire.

 

However, Russian officials have expressed skepticism about Kiev’s commitment to peace. The Kremlin has repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out drone strikes and sabotage attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russian cities, including the Kursk and Bryansk Regions. A woman has died shortly after a desperate attempt to save her son from military recruitment officers in Ukraine, a local Telegram channel and media have claimed, posting a dramatic video of the incident.

 

Ukrainian authorities declared general mobilization following the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, barring most men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the country. In 2024, Kiev tightened conscription laws and lowered the draft age from 27 to 25.

 

However,a considerable number of would-be recruits are apparently unwilling to join the Ukrainian military, as attested by numerous social media videos depicting men fleeing from or resisting draft officers.

 

The mobilization campaign, enforced by the country’s Territorial Centers of Recruitment and Social Support (TCR),has been repeatedly criticized over draft officers’ aggressive tactics and abuses.

 

The video of the incident, which reportedly took place in the city of Merefa in Kharkov Region in eastern Ukraine, was published by a local Telegram channel on Tuesday.A woman in her 60s can be seen clinging to the windshield of a moving van, seemingly trying to stop it. The vehicle moves in reverse gear for some time while the woman screams. An onlooker shooting the video is heard claiming that the van belonged to military recruitment officers who had recently taken the woman’s son, who was presumably being held inside the vehicle.

 

Eventually, a brawny man emerges from the vehicle and rudely tackles the woman, finally making her let go of the van. Soon after it speeds away, the woman collapses to the ground.

 

According to Strana.UA media outlet, the woman soon passed away in an ambulance.

 

In recent months, numerous violent altercations between draft officers and reluctant draftees have been captured on video all across Ukraine. There have also been multiple cases of civil disobedience and even assassinations of draft officers, as well as reports of men dying under suspicious circumstances shortly after being taken from the street.

 

Ukrainian lawmaker Roman Kostenko claimed last month that fewer than one in four recruits enlist voluntarily, with most entering service through whathe described as “brutal compulsory conscription.”

 

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Ukrainian recruitment officers are grabbing people “like dogs on the street.” He accused the leadership in Kiev of waging a war “to the last Ukrainian” on behalf of Western nations.

 

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has officially dismissed criticism of the mobilization process as “Russian propaganda.”

US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that resolving the Ukraine conflict has proven to be more difficult than he expected. He also said he didn’t think his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is serious about ending the hostilities.

 

Since taking office in January, the Republican has repeatedly vowed to put an end to the conflict between Moscow and Kiev in short order. However, Trump has gradually conceded that the endeavor could take longer than his originally touted “24 hours.”

 

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the US president said he was “not happy with Putin,” while claiming, “he’s killing a lot of people,” both Russian and Ukrainian troops. Trump asserted that up to 7,000 people are being killed in the conflict every week at this point.

 

When asked by a reporter whether he planned to “act on that feeling,” Trump replied, “I wouldn’t be telling you,” adding that he wanted his next move to remain “a little surprise” for the time being.

 

The US president cited America’s recent attack on Iran’s nuclear facility as an example of his strategy based on unpredictability.

 

“It’s turned out to be tougher,” Trump acknowledged, referring to his attempts to settle the Ukraine conflict, adding that Washington has given Kiev the “best [military] equipment ever made.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the freeze, suggesting that it could bring the end of the conflict closer.

 

However, on Monday, Trump appeared to go back on the military aid suspension, explaining that Ukraine was “getting hit very hard now” by Russian strikes.

 

Russia has repeatedly condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing that they only serve to prolong the bloodshed without changing its course and increase the risk of broader escalation.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has dismissed efforts by members of the European Parliament to oust her,branding her critics “conspiracy theorists” and accusing them of acting on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

 

Von der Leyen is facing a parliamentary motion of no-confidence in her presidency, which is scheduled for a vote on Thursday after being tabled by Romanian MEP Gheorghe Piperea. Addressing the parliament during a debate on Monday, von der Leyen said those backing the proposal were following “the oldest playbook of extremists” and were attempting to undermine public confidence in the EU with “false claims.”

 

“There is no proof that they have any answers, but there is ample proof that many are supported by our enemies and by their puppet masters in Russia or elsewhere.”

 

“These are movements fueled by conspiracies, from anti-vaxxers to Putin apologists. And you only have to look at some of the signatories of this motion to understand what I mean.”

 

In his remarks to parliament, Piperea accused the Commission of centralizing decision-making in a non-democratic fashion and of interfering in the internal affairs of member states.

 

Russian officials have claimed that EU leaders are using fear tactics to shield themselves from criticism.Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dubbed von der Leyen, who is German, a “fuhrer” for her efforts to push a multi-billion euro militarization program on member states. Russia maintains that unlike Western states it does not interfere with other nations’ domestic affairs.

 

Von der Leyen urged “all the pro-Europeans, pro-democracy forces” in the chamber to support her agenda, arguing that unity was essential to uphold the EU’s foreign policy strength.

 

Criticism of von der Leyen’s leadership has centered on her handling of the

EU’s Covid-19 response during her first term, particularly the lack of transparency in finalizing a 2021 vaccine procurement deal with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. Earlier this year, the European Court of Justice found her office at fault for failing to retain text messages exchanged with Bourla and for refusing to release them to journalists with adequate justification.

 

Piperea is a member of Romania’s AUR party, led by George Simion, who narrowly lost a presidential runoff this year to a pro-EU candidate. The election followed a scrapped first-round vote earlier in 2024, in which outsider Calin Georgescu emerged as the frontrunner. The country’s Constitutional Court annulled the results, citing government allegations of Russian interference.

 

Critics of the EU claim the episode reflects a broader anti-democratic trend allegedly enabled by Brussels.

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

It brings the Austin Firefighters no pleasure to report to the community that the Austin Fire Chief DENIED the deployment of Austin firefighters to Kerrville until very late into the event (so today!), with the exception of only 3 AFD rescue swimmers who helped staff helo teams (which still were NOT deployed until the afternoon of the 4th).

The Austin Firefighter Special Operations teams are specially trained for Hill Country swift water rescue and are some of the best, if not the best, swift water boat teams in the State of Texas.

It is absolutely outrageous that the Austin Fire Chief, Joel G. Baker, would not allow highly trained firefighters from Austin to respond to Kerrville. Because of this egregious dereliction of duty, LIVES WERE VERY LIKELY LOST BECAUSE OF CHIEF BAKER'S DECISION!

Deployment orders came down from the State of Texas on July 2. We would've been pre-deployed before the waters even began to rise!

It is unforgivable that a fire chief would NOT allow his firefighters to answer the call to save lives.

Why would Fire Chief Joel G. Baker do this, you may ask? It was a misguided attempt to save money. I say "misguided" because the fire department is fully reimbursed by the state to deploy. I explained the reimbursement process to Chief Baker last week, and he failed to understand this very simple concept.

We are disgusted with our fire chief. He needs to be held accountable and fired for his disgraceful dereliction of duty.

The Austin Firefighters are starting a vote of no confidence on Tuesday on the fire chief.

As disgusted as we are at our Austin Fire Department leadership, the Austin Firefighters Association made a decision to not air our dirty laundry while victims and bodies were still being recovered. But it's now July 7, and it's time that we hold accountable our disgraced fire chief, AND anybody else in his leadership circle who are responsible for this horrendous act.

The Austin Firefighters commit to being transparent to the community about this process to remove our fire chief and hold all of those accountable who were part of this atrocity.

The firefighters hope we have your support, because it's going to get ugly.

I can't possibly express to you how outraged and sickened the firefighters are that we were not allowed to do the job-the job that we have trained so hard and long to do-during the historic floods that just occurred in Kerrville. We could've made a difference, and we were forced to stand down and lives were lost.

The community deserves a fire chief who cares about the community as much as our firefighters, and that is simply not the case. Joel G. Baker must go!

No shit anons, yesterday I posted a Google Earth pic showing various elevations at Camp Mystic, here it is.

 

Today I go to look again and compare to a graphic of the supposedly flooded area, and the whole area is blanked out on Google Earth. Someone plz czech it to see if it's just me or everyanon.

I can still look at the area on Google Maps, but Earth, where you can get elevations, has a big gray patch.

There are over-development problems and people who own land on the river dam it and re-route it to make their own swimming areas and their land more valuable because it's "waterfront".

 

I wish Trump would put a freeze on new development and make the states evaluate existing residential and commercial real estate before allowing new development. I think existing vacant buildings should be also considered for renovation before allowing massive new construction.

The dams in that area can hold much more water to prevent flooding so it's possible they released the dam water to purposely cause a flood but you'd need to check google earth to get elevation levels of those dams before and after the flood to kickstart that investigation.

Iran 'Rapidly' Beefs Up Air Defenses With Chinese Help After Israel Ceasefire

 

Iran has taken possession of Chinese surface-to-air missile batteries as Tehran rapidly moves to rebuild defensives destroyed by Israel during their recent 12-day conflict, sources have told Middle East Eye.

 

The deliveries of Chinese surface-to-air missile batteries occurred after a de-facto truce was struck between Iran and Israel on June 24, an Arab official familiar with the intelligence told MEE.

 

Another Arab official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive intelligence, said that the US's Arab allies were aware of Tehran's efforts to "back up and reinforce" its air defenses and that the White House had been informed of Iran's progress.

 

The officials did not say how many surface-to-air missiles, or SAMs, Iran had received from China since the end of the fighting. However, one of the Arab officials said that Iran was paying for the SAMs with oil shipments.

 

China is the largest importer of Iranian oil, and the US Energy Information Administration suggested in a report in May that nearly 90 percent of Iran’s crude and condensate exports flow to Beijing.

 

For several years, China has imported record amounts of Iranian oil despite US sanctions, using countries such as Malaysia as a transshipment hub to mask the crude's origin.

 

"The Iranians engage in creative ways of trading," the second Arab official told MEE. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump likely heavily discussed Iran and its nuclear program when they meet on Monday.

 

MEE reached out to the White House for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
