Harvard President Garber Tells Faculty He Is Not Considering a $500 Million Deal With Trump

Since President Donald Trump first announced in July that Harvard had returned to the negotiating table, a trickle of reports have sketched out what terms might be under consideration, ranging from a financial settlement to the establishment of a new conservative research institute. Trump himself has said for weeks that the parties are close to a deal, and many Harvard affiliates have come to see an agreement as inevitable.

 

Over the past week, deal opponents have taken an increasingly urgent tone in their pleas to Harvard — in some cases, shifting their messaging to focus on lines in the sand, rather than blanket opposition. Congressional Democrats threatened to launch an investigation into Harvard if it struck a deal. Students and alumni circulated another round of letters urging Harvard not to give up core principles of academic freedom. And groups of faculty wrote to Garber to lay out a set of “red lines” not to be crossed during negotiations.

 

Garber’s comments could allay the fears of critics who see the optics of a financial settlement as particularly noxious. Some have charged that a hefty payment to the Trump administration would amount to “extortion” or a contribution to “patronage slush funds.”

 

But many of the recent missives to Harvard’s leaders have focused on concerns that go beyond money.

 

Faculty groups identified several concessions they would see as particular areas of concern — including ceding control of faculty hiring and student admissions decisions, appointing a third-party monitor, or sharing extensive data about students and employees with the federal government.

China's 'Shock' Statement: Palestinians Have Right To Use 'Armed Force' Against Israel

China has backed the right of the Palestinian people to use armed force to combat Israel's occupation of their land, calling it an "an inalienable right well founded in international law".

The comments on Thursday were made by the Chinese ambassador to the UN, Zhang Jun, during the fourth day of public hearings held by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Representatives of 52 countries are addressing the ICJ on Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land.

Beijing’s envoy said there were "various people (who) freed themselves from colonial rule" and they could use "all available means, including armed struggle".

He described the Palestinian use of armed resistance as legitimate and not an act of terrorism.

"The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts," Zhang Jun told the court.

In his speech, Jun criticized Israeli policies, characterizing them as “oppression that has severely undermined and impeded the exercises and full realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination".

The ICJ’s public hearings, which will be held until February 26, come after a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an ICJ advisory opinion.

The number of states participating in the oral proceedings is the highest of any case since the ICJ's establishment in 1945 and is separate to the more publicized genocide case brought by South Africa. A panel of 15 judges are expected to take about six months to deliberate before issuing an advisory opinion.

Besides China, other countries scheduled to participate in the hearings include Hungary, France, South Africa and Egypt.

International bodies, including the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union will also take part. Israel will not participate but has sent written observations to the court.

A new report from the nonprofit watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RWB) found USAID was the "primary donor" as almost 90% of all reporting out of Ukraine relied on subsidies.

 

Following the Trump administration’s defunding of USAID, several local media outlets in Ukraine suspended their operations as they look for alternative funding, according to RWB.

 

Prior to the USAID shutdown, Congress approved a 2025 foreign aid budget, which included $268.3 million to support “independent media and the free flow of information,” according to the report.

 

Citing a now-offline USAID fact sheet, the report said USAID funded more than 6,200 journalists across over 700 media outlets and nearly 280 "media" non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in 30 countries.

"I was made aware of the funding of USAID to media outlets, including Politico. … And I can confirm that the more than $8 million taxpayer dollars that have gone to essentially subsidizing subscriptions to Politico on the American taxpayers' dime will no longer be happening," said Leavitt. "The DOGE team is working on canceling those payments now."

 

Congressional records show that members of U.S. Congress from both parties and the committees they led paid tens of thousands for Politico subscriptions in the last year, according to CBS News.

 

In October 2021, German publishing and media firm Axel Springer SE acquired Politico for over $1 billion.

Total household debt rose by $185 billion in the second quarter of 2025, a 1% rise from Q1 2025. Balances now stand at $18.39 trillion and have increased by $4.24 trillion since the end of 2019, just before the pandemic recession.

Balances

 

Mortgage balances grew by $131 billion during the second quarter of 2025 and totaled $12.94 trillion at the end of June.

 

Balances on home equity lines of credit (HELOC) rose by $9 billion, the thirteenth consecutive quarterly increase.

 

There is now $411 billion in outstanding HELOC balances, $94 billion above the low reached in the first quarter of 2022.

 

Credit card balances rose by $27 billion during the second quarter and now total $1.21 trillion outstanding and are 5.87% above the level a year ago.

 

Auto loan balances rose by $13 billion, and now stand at $1.66 trillion.

 

Other balances, which include retail cards and consumer finance loans, were roughly unchanged at $540 billion.

 

Student loan balances edged up by $7 billion and now stand at $1.64 trillion.

 

In total, non-housing balances increased by $45 billion, a 0.9% increase from 2025Q1.

Meteor before Galaxy

 

What's that green streak in front of the Andromeda galaxy? A meteor. While photographing the Andromeda galaxy in 2016, near the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower, a small pebble from deep space crossed right in front of our Milky Way Galaxy's far-distant companion. The small meteor took only a fraction of a second to pass through this 10-degree field. The meteor flared several times while braking violently upon entering Earth's atmosphere. The green color was created, at least in part, by the meteor's gas glowing as it vaporized. Although the exposure was timed to catch a Perseid meteor, the orientation of the imaged streak seems a better match to a meteor from the Southern Delta Aquariids, a meteor shower that peaked a few weeks earlier. Not coincidentally, the Perseid Meteor Shower peaks next week, although this year the meteors will have to outshine a sky brightened by a nearly full moon.

Crew Swaps Commanders, Waits for Departure, and Conducts Muscle and Blood Research

Muscle stimulation and blood circulation research topped the 11-member Expedition 73 crew’s schedule on Tuesday helping doctor’s ensure astronauts stay fit and healthy on long-duration missions.

The International Space Station residents also swapped commanders as four crewmates prepare for return to Earth.

 

Astronauts living and working in space exercise seven days a week to prevent space-caused bone loss and muscle atrophy.

Careful attention by specialists on the ground and sophisticated workout gear on the station help protect a crew member’s bones and muscles, as well as their cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Now researchers are exploring electronic muscle stimulation as a way to supplement space exercise and reduce the reliance on bulky, complicated training equipment.

 

For the muscle study, NASA Flight Engineer Nichole Ayers attached electrodes to her legs after working out on the advanced resistive exercise device and jogging on the COLBERT treadmill.

Next, NASA Flight Engineer Jonny Kim sent small electrical signals to the electrodes using biomedical gear that stimulated the leg muscles.

Doctors will review the data to understand how the muscular system responds to electrical stimulation to potentially benefit future missions.

 

The orbital outpost’s newest flight engineers, Mike Fincke from NASA and Kimiya Yui from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), took turns researching how blood flows from the brain to the heart in microgravity.

Sensors on their neck and chest measured blood volume changes in their upper body caused by body fluids pooling toward an astronaut’s head. Results may help prevent cardiovascular disorders both on Earth and in space.

 

Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky also explored how living in space affects blood circulation monitoring how blood flows from the heart to the arms and hands.

The duo used electrodes and blood pressure measurements to give doctors new insights and prevent space-linked symptoms such as vascular stiffness and stress caused by microgravity and radiation.

 

Ryzhikov took command of the orbital outpost today during a short ceremony when JAXA astronaut Takuya Onishi handed over his leadership responsibilities to the veteran cosmonaut.

Ryzhikov will lead the Expedition 73 mission until December when he, Zubritsky, and Kim enter their Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft, undock from the Prichal module, and ride back to Earth.

Onishi now turns his attention to returning to Earth this week with Ayers, NASA astronaut Anne McClain, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov.

 

Following a weather review on Tuesday, NASA and SpaceX now are targeting undocking no earlier than 12:05 p.m. EDT, Thursday, Aug. 7.

For this undocking opportunity, splashdown is targeted at approximately 11:58 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, off the coast of California.

Mission teams elected to skip an undocking opportunity on Wednesday, Aug. 6, due to high wind predictions in the splashdown zones.

 

McClain joined Zena Cardman, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 commander, on Tuesday and transferred space station emergency hardware from the departing Dragon to the newly-arrived Dragon.

The Dragon commanders also partnered together inside the Columbus laboratory module setting up research gear to explore manufacturing high-quality optical fibers in space to overcome Earth-induced imperfections.

New Roscosmos Flight Engineer Oleg Platonov began his shift setting up Earth observation gear to image Earth landmarks in a variety of wavelengths. He then joined departing cosmonaut Peskov to begin relieving him of his orbital duties.

NASA’s TRACERS Continues Recovery Efforts for One Satellite

August 5, 2025

 

Teams for NASA’s TRACERS (Tandem Reconnection and Cusp Electrodynamics Reconnaissance Satellites) mission, which launched on July 23, are continuing recovery efforts for one satellite, called Space Vehicle 1 (SV1).

The other satellite, called Space Vehicle 2 (SV2), remains in good health and has started the commissioning process.

 

An issue with the power subsystem on July 25 resulted in intermittent contacts and a loss of communication with SV1. Indications from earlier data suggest the spacecraft can only be active when it is receiving adequate power through its solar panels.

Because of the spacecraft’s current orientation, the next opportunity to reestablish contact and implement further recovery steps is later in August, when SV1’s solar panels will receive more sunlight.

The team is reviewing data collected from the spacecraft to diagnose and determine next steps. Following any contact with the spacecraft, the team will assess status and any impact to the mission’s science goals.

 

The SV2 spacecraft is operational, and the commissioning for the spacecraft and instruments are progressing as expected. NASA anticipates completing commissioning for SV2 by the end of August.

The TRACERS mission launched to study magnetic reconnection and its effects in Earth’s atmosphere. Magnetic reconnection occurs when activity from the Sun interacts with Earth’s magnetic field.

By understanding this process, scientists will be able to better understand and prepare for impacts of solar activity on Earth.

It is a military psychological warfare weapon comprised of the digital data collected about each of us and weaponized against us in social media, the military term for which is Interactive Internet Activities (IIA).

 

Bergy says Shadownet was used heavily in the Ukraine Color Revolution by Paul Manafort and that an entire private military contracting industry has sprung up over the past decade, with multiple companies creating different versions of this software, the more recent of which are increasingly automated by Agentic AI.

Greek Student’s NASA-Funded Research Reveals Two Ancient Galaxies

A Greek student, Menelaos Raptis, has made a groundbreaking discovery of two galaxies with the help of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, a feat that is already reshaping scientific understanding of the early universe.

Why wasn’t HRC prosecuted for the emails? Put simply, Obama ultimately OK’d by using the non govt email addy to communicate w/ Clinton.

Perhaps recognizing how offensive such ties will be to voters concerned over future terrorist attacks on this country by radical Muslims professing allegiance to Sharia law, the Clinton campaign on Monday tried to downplay Ms. Abedin’s involvement in the Journal and the Muslim Brotherhood.

 

The Clinton surrogate group Media Matters claimed predictably there was “no evidence” that Ms. Abedin or her family had ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, and that Trump campaign staffers who spoke of these ties were conspiracy theorists.

 

To debunk the evidence, Media Matters pointed to a Snopes.com “fact-check” piece that cited as its sole source… Senator John McCain. This is the same John McCain who met Libyan militia leader Abdelkarim Belhaj, a known al Qaeda associate, and saluted him as “my hero” during a 2011 visit to Benghazi.

Massie has been outspoken against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and its influence on American politics, and in December 2023 tweeted out a meme appearing to contrast Zionism with American patriotism.[102]

On the evening of Aug. 3, 2025, NASA photographer Bill Ingalls captured a fleeting 'shooting star' over the night skies in West Virginia during two different meteor showers.

As these events continue to rain meteors across the sky, stargazers plan to see these events in areas with little light pollution.

 

What is it?

Meteor showers occur when Earth, on its orbit around the sun, passes through clouds of debris left behind by comets, sometimes consisting of pieces no bigger than a grain of sand.

As these tiny fragments collide with Earth's atmosphere, they burn up at high speeds and create the streak of light we call meteors, or shooting stars.

While showers occur throughout the year, certain ones are especially anticipated due to their brightness, frequency, or unique visual characteristics.

 

Where is it?

Ingalls took this photo in Spruce Knob, West Virginia, a remote area that offers perfect viewing conditions for skywatchers.

 

Why is it amazing?

Besides showing a beautiful night sky, Ingalls was able to capture this image during the brief overlap period between two meter showers: the Perseid meteor shower and the Alpha Capricornid meteor shower.

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the most well-known and active showers of the year. It's caused by debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, with fast-moving meteors that leave bright trails.

In contrast, the Alpha Capricornids meteor shower is produced from debris from the comet-like body 169P/NEAT with slower meteor speeds than the Perseid meteor shower.

Israel Aircraft Industries and Chicago’s Pritzker family plan to build a new line of midpriced business jets, aiming to cash in on a market that is expected to flourish in the next decade.

 

Their private U.S. corporation, calledGalaxy Aerospace, formally announced the joint venture Tuesday.

 

Tom Pritzker, president of Hyatt Corp., said hehoped the partnership would help Israel Aircraft Industries, known best for its military products, make a strong presence in the lucrative U.S. civilian aircraft market.

 

“What the Israelis needed was an American presence, with some marketing background - and money,” Pritzker said.

 

The company’s flagship airplane, the Galaxy, will seat eight to 19 people and have a range of nearly 4,000 nautical miles. That would cover many popular business routes, including New York to Paris and New York to Los Angeles.

Space Scotland appoints Natasha Nicholson as CEO

An industry-led body that represents Scotland’s space sector has appointed Dr Natasha Nicholson as its new CEO.

Nicholson returns to not-for-profit Space Scotland after playing a key role during its formative phase as Cluster Manager.

She brings a track record of delivery and stakeholder engagement, alongside scientific expertise and understanding of Scotland’s space ecosystem.

 

Nicholson’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Scotland’s space ambitions, with Europe’s first ever commercial launch into orbit expected to take place from Shetland in the coming months, growing international engagement and a surge in commercial activity across research, manufacturing and satellite data analysis.

Scotland now hosts more than 180 space organisations and leads Europe in the manufacture of small satellites, with firms including Spire Global, AAC Clyde Space and Alba Orbital operating from Glasgow.

 

Nicholson has held roles including Cross-Cluster Liaison Manager for the Science and Technology Facilities Council at Harwell Campus, Chief Scientific Officer for the Arctic research station and CEO for a space-related research and development business.

She will now lead the next phase of development for Space Scotland, bringing focus to the delivery of the national strategy and responsiveness to the needs of Scotland’s commercial space community.

 

“It is a privilege to return to Space Scotland with the opportunity to make a greater impact,” said Nicholson, “Scotland’s space community is still growing rapidly and has a vital role in the UK’s broader space economy.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center on Tuesday announced the retirement of CEO Dr. Kimberly Robinson.

The center said Robinson retirement was effective immediately. Chief Financial Officer Brenda Perez will serve as interim CEO as the Alabama Space Science Exhibit Commission, the Rocket Center’s governing board, conducts a nationwide search for a new CEO.

 

According to the new release announcing the retirement:

“Dr. Robinson assumed leadership during one of the most challenging times in the Center’s history, navigating the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had left the institution facing potential bankruptcy and permanent closure.

Under her steady guidance, the Center underwent a strategic realignment that not only stabilized operations but led to record-breaking revenues.

 

“A hallmark of her tenure was the successful launch of a $65 million capital campaign, fueled by generous donors and grants.

Political involvement

 

According to OpenSecrets, AT&T was the fourteenth-largest donor to United States federal political campaigns and committees from 1989 to 2019,[117] having contributed more than US$84.1 million, 42% of which went to Republicans and 58% of which went to Democrats. In 2005, AT&T was among 53 entities that contributed the maximum of $250,000 to the second inauguration of President George W. Bush.[118][119][120] Bill Leahy, representing AT&T, sits on the Private Enterprise Board of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).[121] ALEC is a nonprofit organization of conservative state legislators and private sector representatives that drafts and shares model state-level legislation for distribution among state governments in the United States.[122][123][124]

 

During the period of 1998 to 2019, the company expended US$380.1 million on lobbying in the United States.[125] A key political issue for AT&T has been the question of which businesses win the right to profit by providing broadband internet access in the United States.[126] The company has also lobbied in support of several federal bills. In May 2018, reports emerged that AT&T made 12 monthly payments between January and December 2017 to Essential Consultants, a company set up by President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen, totaling $600,000.[130] Although initial reports on May 8 mentioned only four monthly payments totaling $200,000,[131] documents obtained by the Washington Post on May 10 confirmed the figure of 12 payments, which had begun three days after the President was sworn into office.[132][133] AT&T confirmed the report the same day.[134] The report from The Washington Post, as well as additional reporting from Bloomberg, revealed the payments had been made for Cohen to "provide guidance" relating to the attempted $85 billion merger with Time Warner,[132][133] to gain information on the Trump administration's planned tax reforms, as well as about potential changes to net neutrality policies under the new FCC.[135] Chairman of the FCC Ajit Pai denied Cohen ever inquired about net neutrality on AT&T's behalf.[134][136] A spokesperson for AT&T said that the company had been contacted by the Special Counsel investigation led by Robert Mueller regarding the payments, and had provided all the information requested in November and December 2017.[137][138]

 

In early 2019, the Democratic House Judiciary requested records related to the AT&T-Time Warner merger from the White House.[139]

Criticism and controversies

Hemisphere Project

 

The company maintains a database of call detail records of all telephone calls that have passed through its network since 1987. AT&T employees work at High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area offices (operated by the Office of National Drug Control Policy) in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Houston so data can be quickly turned over to law enforcement agencies. Records are requested via an administrative subpoena, without the involvement of a court or grand jury.

Censorship

 

In September 2007, AT&T changed its legal policy to state that "AT&T may immediately terminate or suspend all or a portion of your Service, any Member ID, electronic mail address, IP address, Universal Resource Locator or domain name used by you, without notice for conduct that AT&T believes … (c) tends to damage the name or reputation of AT&T, or its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries."[161] By October 10, 2007, AT&T had altered the terms and conditions for its Internet service to explicitly support freedom of expression by its subscribers, after an outcry claiming the company had given itself the right to censor its subscribers' transmissions.[162]

In 2006, the Electronic Frontier Foundation lodged the class action lawsuit Hepting v. AT&T, which alleged that AT&T had allowed agents of the National Security Agency (NSA) to monitor phone and Internet communications of AT&T customers without warrants. If true, this would violate the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 and the First and Fourth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. AT&T has yet to confirm or deny that monitoring by the NSA is occurring. In April 2006, retired former AT&T technician Mark Klein lodged an affidavit supporting this allegation.[164][165] The US Department of Justice stated it would intervene in this lawsuit by means of State Secrets Privilege.[166]

 

In July 2006, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California – in which the suit was filed – rejected a federal government motion to dismiss the case. The motion to dismiss, which invoked the State Secrets Privilege, had argued that any court review of the alleged partnership between the federal government and AT&T would harm national security. The case was immediately appealed to the Ninth Circuit. It was dismissed on June 3, 2009, citing retroactive legislation in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.[167][168]

 

In May 2006, USA Today reported that all international and domestic calling records had been handed over to the National Security Agency by AT&T, Verizon, SBC, and BellSouth for the purpose of creating a massive calling database.[169] The portions of the new AT&T that had been part of SBC Communications before November 18, 2005, were not mentioned.

 

On June 21, 2006, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that AT&T had rewritten rules on its privacy policy. The policy, which took effect June 23, 2006, says that "AT&T – not customers – owns customers' confidential info and can use it 'to protect its legitimate business interests, safeguard others, or respond to legal process.'"[170]

 

On August 22, 2007, National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell confirmed that AT&T was one of the telecommunications companies that assisted with the government's warrantless wire-tapping program on calls between foreign and domestic sources.[171]

 

On November 8, 2007, Mark Klein, a former AT&T technician, told Keith Olbermann of MSNBC that all Internet traffic passing over AT&T lines was copied into a locked room at the company's San Francisco office – to which only employees with National Security Agency clearance had access.[172]

 

AT&T keeps for five to seven years a record of who text messages whom and the date and time, but not the content of the messages.[173]

 

AT&T has a one star privacy rating from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.[174]

Copyright enforcement

 

In January 2008, reports emerged that the company planned to begin filtering all Internet traffic which passed through its network for intellectual property violations.[175] Media commentators speculated that if this plan was implemented, it would have led to a mass exodus of subscribers from AT&T,[176] although Internet traffic of non-subscribers may have gone through the company's network anyway.[175] Internet freedom proponents used these developments as justification for government-mandated network neutrality.

 

Under AT&T's current copyright enforcement program, content owners may notify AT&T when they allege unlawful sharing of material. The program is based on IP addresses visible to content owners in peer-to-peer networks, not on filtering. AT&T has terminated the broadband service of some customers accused of copyright infringement.[177]

Discrimination against local public-access television channels

 

In 2009 AT&T was accused by community media groups of discriminating against local public, educational, and government access (PEG) cable TV channels, by "impictions that will severely restrict the audience".[178]

 

According to Barbara Popovic, executive director of the Chicago public-access service CAN-TV, the new AT&T U-verse system forced all Public-access television into a special menu system, denying normal functionality such as channel numbers, access to the standard program guide, and DVR recording.[178] The Ratepayer Advocates division of the California Public Utilities Commission reported: "Instead of putting the stations on individual channels, AT&T has bundled community stations into a generic channel that can only be navigated through a complex and lengthy process."[178]

 

Sue Buske (president of telecommunications consulting firm the Buske Group and a former head of the National Federation of Local Cable Programmers/Alliance for Community Media) argue that this is "an overall attack […] on public access across the [United States], the place in the dial around cities and communities where people can make their own media in their own communities".[178]

 

 

Information security

 

In June 2010, a hacker group known as Goatse Security discovered a vulnerability within AT&T that could allow anyone to uncover email addresses belonging to customers of AT&T 3G service for the Apple iPad.[179] These email addresses could be accessed without a protective password.[180] Using a script, Goatse Security collected thousands of email addresses from AT&T.[179] Goatse Security informed AT&T about the security flaw through a third party.[181] Goatse Security then disclosed around 114,000 of these emails to Gawker Media, which published an article about the security flaw and disclosure in Valleywag.[179][181] Praetorian Security Group criticized the web application that Goatse Security exploited as "poorly designed".[179]

 

In April 2015, AT&T was fined $25 million over data security breaches, marking the largest ever fine issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for breaking data privacy laws. The investigation revealed the theft of details of approximately 280,000 people from call centers in Mexico, Colombia and the Philippines.[182][183]

 

In March 2024, AT&T confirmed the 2021 leak of contact information for over 7.6 million current users, as well as 65 million former ones. The leaked records may contain "full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and passcode".[184] Multiple class-action lawsuits have been filed as a result of this.[185][186]

 

In July 2024, the company stated it experienced a new breach, the largest to date. The company is expected to notify around 110 million customers who were affected.[187]

Accusations of enabling fraud

 

In March 2012, the United States federal government announced a lawsuit against AT&T. The specific accusations state that AT&T "violated the False Claims Act by facilitating and seeking federal payment for IP Relay calls by international callers who were ineligible for the service and sought to use it for fraudulent purposes. The complaint alleges that, out of fears that fraudulent call volume would drop after the registration deadline, AT&T knowingly adopted a non-compliant registration system that did not verify whether the user was located within the United States. The complaint further contends that AT&T continued to employ this system even with the knowledge that it facilitated the use of IP Relay by fraudulent foreign callers, which accounted for up to 95 percent of AT&T's call volume. The government's complaint alleges that AT&T improperly billed the TRS Fund for reimbursement of these calls and received millions of dollars in federal payments as a result."[188] In 2013, AT&T entered into a consent decree with the FCC and paid a total of $21.75 million.[189]

Aaron Slator controversy

 

On April 28, 2015, AT&T announced that it had fired Aaron Slator, President of Content and Advertising Sales, for sending text messages critics described as racist.[190] African-American employee Knoyme King filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Slator.[191] The day before that, protesters arrived at AT&T's headquarters in Dallas and its satellite offices in Los Angeles as well as at the home of CEO Randall Stephenson to protest alleged systemic racial policies. On January 24, 2017, Slator sued AT&T in the Los Angeles Superior Court, accusing the company of defamation and wrongful termination. Slator had been involved in organizing AT&T's planned $48.5 billion acquisition of DirecTV since 2014, and he claimed that when news headlines speculated that his text messages could prevent the acquisition from going through, he was fired as a "scapegoat" by company executives. He also claimed that the executives had known about the text messages since at least late 2013, and had promised him at the time that he would not be fired for them.[193][194] The company stood by its decision to terminate Slator.[195]

Overcharging government agencies

 

In 2020 AT&T paid out $48 million to settle a lawsuit with 30 government entities. The suit (under the California False Claims Act) related to contractual undertakings to provide services at "the lowest cost available". AT&T denied any wrongdoing in the matter.[196]

One America News Network

 

An investigative report by Reuters in 2021 revealed that AT&T played a key role in creating, funding and sustaining One America News Network (OAN), a far-right TV network known for promoting conspiracy theories.[197] According to 2020 sworn testimony by an OAN accountant, 90% of OAN's revenue came from AT&T. According to OAN founder Robert Herring Sr., AT&T wanted to create a conservative network to compete with Fox News. Court documents showed OAN promised to "cast a positive light" on AT&T during newscasts. AT&T denied the allegations.[198][199] NAACP president Derrick Johnson and comedian John Oliver criticized AT&T for funding OAN.[200][201]

Leaking data to Wall Street

 

In March 2021 the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed suit against AT&T and three of its executives for violating the Fair Disclosure Rule against making selective disclosures of "material nonpublic information" to analysts and others. The SEC alleged that beginning in early 2016 these executives leaked key information to Wall Street analysts in order to manipulate revenue forecasts for the company.[202]

 

In December 2022, without acknowledging any guilt, AT&T agreed to pay $6.25 million in fines to settle the lawsuit. The individual executives were also on the hook for $25,000 each.[202][203]

Bribery to influence legislation

 

In October 2022, AT&T agreed to pay a $23 million fine to resolve a federal criminal investigation into the company's efforts to unlawfully influence former Illinois Speaker of the House Michael J. Madigan.[204] Under a deferred prosecution with the US Department of Justice, AT&T admitted that it arranged for payments to an ally of Madigan in order to influence Madigan's vote in 2017 on legislation that would eliminate AT&T's so-called "Carrier of Last Resort" obligation to provide landline telephone service to all Illinois residents, which was expected to save the company millions of dollars.[204] Madigan also helped to defeat an amendment to a bill that became law in 2018 regarding fees for small cell tower attachments that would have been harmful to AT&T's interests.[205] Former AT&T Illinois President Paul La Schiazza, who is set to go on trial in September 2024 for the alleged bribery scheme, described AT&T's quid pro quo relationship with Madigan in an email to an AT&T employee as "the friends and family plan."[205]

2024 outage

 

On February 22, 2024, cellular service was disrupted across the United States with "millions" unable to connect to the cellular network.[206] Municipalities reported that AT&T customers were unable to place calls to emergency services, even when using their phone's SOS capability.[207] The blackout prompted the FBI and Department of Homeland Security to launch investigations into the possibility of a cyber attack being the cause of the blackout.[208] AT&T later claimed that the cause was instead a poorly timed server update.[209] Users were later compensated credit as a result of the outage.[210] In March, the FCC opened an investigation into the outage.[206]

 

 

2024 Data Breach Fine

 

On September 18, 2024, AT&T was fined $13 million by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) following a major data breach that exposed millions of customers' personal information. The FTC found that AT&T failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures and did not promptly notify affected individuals. As part of the settlement, AT&T is required to enhance its data protection practices and provide identity theft protection to those impacted.[211]

John T. Stankey(born 1962) is an American businessman who is the chairman and CEO of AT&T. He previously was AT&T's president and COO and before that CEO of WarnerMedia.[1][2][3] He assumed the CEO role of AT&T in July 2020, succeeding Randall L. Stephenson.[4]

Early life and education

 

Stankey was raised in Los Angeles, the youngest of three children.[5] His father was an insurance underwriter and his mother a housewife.[5]

 

Stankey received a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in finance fromLoyola Marymount Universityin Los Angeles in 1985.[6][7] He received a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1991.[5][4]

Career

 

In 1985, Stankey took an entry-level position with Pacific Bell,[2][5][8] which was acquired by SBC Communications in 1996.[9] He went on to serve as the executive vice president of industry markets beginning in 1998, and became the executive president of industry markets in 2000.[8] In 2001, he became the president and CEO of SBC Southwest.[8]

 

Stankey served as CIO of the "new AT&T" after the merger of SBC with AT&T Corporation finalized in 2005.[10] He was the senior executive vice president and CTO for AT&T from 2008 to 2012. In January 2012, he became the CSO and group president of AT&T.[8]

 

In 2018,[11] Stankey was named CEO of WarnerMedia,[12] which owned various media and film corporations, including Warner Bros., HBO, Turner Broadcasting System, and CNN.[13] On October 1, 2019, he became president and COO of AT&T, while continuing to serve as the CEO of WarnerMedia.[14]
