Beverly Hills Public School District Votes To Display Israeli Flags To Combat Antisemitism

 

The Beverly Hills Unified School District voted 3–2 to require Israeli flags be displayed at every campus and district site during the month of May.

 

The policy is embedded in a board resolution adopted Tuesday that says the district “will display the Jewish Israeli flag at each school and facility … throughout the month of May every year,” while also adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism and setting commemorations tied to Jewish history.

 

“Does any flag of a foreign nation belong on a public school facility here in Beverly Hills? Of course not,” parent Andrea Grossman told the board, according to CBS News.

 

Board president Rachelle Marcus and member Amanda Stern cast the two “no” votes; Marcus raised security concerns and Stern objected to placing a national flag in a school resolution, according to the outlet.

 

District officials also clarified the flags will not be raised on flagpoles alongside the U.S. and California flags but will be displayed elsewhere on campuses, CBS News reported.

 

The new rule is part of a resolution which also recognizes May as Jewish Heritage Month; commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day and International Holocaust Remembrance Day with age-appropriate instruction; and designates Oct. 7 as an annual day of remembrance.

First Syrian Crude Oil Shipped In Aftermath Of Assad's Overthrow

 

The West has moved fast on Syria in the wake of Assad's ouster - first lifting most sanctions and now ensuring oil and gas are tapped and get flowing again. The brutal sanctions served to punish the broader Syrian population for many years.

 

It underscores once again that the disastrous war was really about externally-driven regime change and installing a more malleable puppet government - which turned out to be essentially Al Qaeda in suits.

 

Bloomberg is reporting that the Switzerland-based Vitol Group, which is the largest independent oil trading company in the world, will soon receive and export Syria's first shipment of crude oil and transport it to a refinery in Italy.

 

The report indicates, "The shipment is due to load on Wednesday, the person said. The company declined to comment and Syria’s energy ministry didn’t respond to requests to do so."

 

The last several months have seen Pentagon reduce its occupation at and near Syria's oil and gas fields in the northeast, where American forces had long supported Kurdish and Arab 'Syrian Democratic Forces' (SDF).

 

It's unclear what kind of deal may have been quietly worked out between Kurdish groups, and the Sharaa/Jolani government, and the US military. But Bloomberg notes further:

 

America’s most senior envoy in Pakistan has told the South Asian nation that US companies are showing “strong interest” in its oil and gas sector.

 

During Trump's first term he had openly advertised that US troops would stay in Syria to "secure the oil". Ultimately, US national security officials sought to starve Assad government areas of vital resources, in order to choke Damascus into submission.

 

The country's production before 2011 was estimated at hundreds of thousands of barrels per day - which was really just enough to provide for its domestic energy needs.

 

During the mainstay of the proxy war and US occupation of Deir Ezzor and Hasakah provinces, some 90% of Syria's crude oil came from Iran. There were still mass fuel shortages, and huge queues at gas stations.

 

Syria had never been a significant exporter or importer of crude, which means the population has suffered greatly during the war, and amid international sanctions.

Madonna begs Pope Leo to visit Gaza 'before it’s too late'

Madonna has called on Pope Leo XIV to visit Gaza in order to "bring your light to the children before it's too late".

The US pop star, considered one of the most successful female solo acts of all time and who was born and raised as a Catholic, shared her plea on Instagram.

 

"Most Holy Father, please go to Gaza and bring your light to the children before it's too late. As a mother, I cannot bear to watch their suffering. The children of the world belong to everyone."

 

She added: "You are the only one of us who cannot be denied entry. We need the humanitarian gates to be fully opened to save these innocent children.

 

"There is no more time. Please say you will go. Love, Madonna."

 

Her comments come after an Italian Catholic priest who has been harshly critical of Israel’s war in Gaza was denied entry to Israel and placed on a flight from Tel Aviv to Greece, reports The Times of Israel.

Father Nandino Capovilla, 63, a priest in Marghera, near Venice, landed at Ben Gurion Airport on 11 August to take part in a “Pilgrimage of Justice” organised by the Catholic peace movement Pax Christi.

 

Capovilla was reportedly stopped at border control and eventually given a form to sign, which stated that he could not enter Israel for reasons related to security or public order.

Israel has faced mounting pressure over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, with experts last month warning that "the worst-case scenario of famine" was playing out in the conflict zone, the BBC reports.

It notes that Madonna's plea comes as the UK, EU, Australia, Canada and Japan issued a statement saying "famine is unfolding in front of our eyes", while the nations urged action to "reverse starvation".

 

Last week, the BBC notes, the UN's humanitarian agency said the amount of aid entering Gaza continued to be "far below the minimum required". The agency said it continued to experience impediments and delays as it tries to collect aid from Israeli-controlled border zones.

Israel has continued to deny that starvation is occurring in Gaza and has accused UN agencies of not collecting aid at the border crossing points and delivering it.

In July, Pope Leo said that he is following the humanitarian crisis in Gaza with “great concern” while also renewing his “heartfelt appeal for a ceasefire”.

The Pope described how the civilian population in Gaza is being “crushed by hunger and continues to be exposed to violence and death”.

 

In a subsequent comment to her original Instagram post calling on the Pope, Madonna said: "Politics Cannot affect Change. Only consciousness can. Therefore I am Reaching out to a Man of God."

 

She went on to say: "I am not pointing fingers, placing blame or taking sides. Everyone is suffering. Including the mothers of the hostages. I pray that they are released as well."

Frustrated parents say enforcement of a vague city policy has prevented them from teaching their own children to swim, even as demand for lessons far outstrips supply

 

When Hailey Arthur took her seven-year-old daughter Zoey to the Kensington Community Centre pool in East Vancouver last month, the pair were eager to get in the water. Arthur, 35, wanted Zoey, whom she describes as a “non-swimmer,” to feel more confident before starting swim camp there.

 

For about 20 minutes, the two practised floats and glides in the shallow end. Then, Arthur says, a lifeguard told her she couldn’t continue.

 

“She said it looked too much like a lesson and that I can’t teach during public swim,” said Arthur, a former lifeguard. “I was confused. I can’t teach my own daughter how to swim at a public pool?”

 

Arthur said the lifeguard threatened to ask her to leave if she persisted. The encounter left Arthur unsettled and Zoey asking why she couldn’t learn from her mum.

 

“My daughter didn’t want to go back to the pool,” the mother said.

 

The incident reflects a growing frustration among Vancouver parents, who say enforcement of a vague city policy has prevented them from teaching their own children to swim, even as demand for lessons far outstrips supply. Postmedia has spoken with several families who say they have faced similar enforcement of the city’s swim lesson policy.

 

“If the only way our kids can learn to swim is through paid city lessons, and there aren’t enough lifeguards to teach them, many children won’t learn — and that’s a scary situation,” said Arthur.

 

In a statement, the Vancouver park board said, “Parents are welcome to support and guide their children at our pools. However, organized and structured private swim instruction, including formal lessons, is not permitted unless it is provided by authorized aquatics staff or through an approved private business.”

 

The board explained that anyone offering formal swim instruction at a public pool must meet liability standards, including holding a municipal business licence and insurance that meets park board requirements. “These standards help ensure that all instruction is delivered safely, consistently, and in alignment with facility guidelines.”

 

In Vancouver, how the policy is enforced varies. Tia Jayne, a nanny, said she has been able to teach multiple children to swim at Britannia, Templeton and Kitsilano pools.

 

“I have been directly asked (by a lifeguard) if I was a private instructor. When I have explained that I am a nanny, I have never had an issue or been asked to stop,” said Jayne.

 

Vancouver mother Stephanie Schick said she was shocked to hear that her 17-year-old daughter’s friend was told she violated the policy while showing her some breaststroke tips at UBC Aquatic Centre.

“It’s ludicrous considering it’s often very difficult to even get your child into swimming lessons,” said Schick. “Her friend got in trouble, and her name was recorded as having violated this policy.”

 

The rules across Metro Vancouver vary widely. At public pools in Langley City, swimming lessons can only be taught by city staff.

 

“Parents and guardians are not allowed to teach their own children or youth,” a city spokesperson told Postmedia. “Private lessons are offered by the city only, and we do not allow any other entity or certified instructors to teach at our pool.”

 

In West Vancouver, the rules around teaching one’s children how to swim are less clear.

 

“Parents are welcome to swim with their children and share their own knowledge. However, if the interaction resembles a professional lesson, a lifeguard may check in to ensure it aligns with our facility policies,” a spokesperson from the district said in a statement.

 

In Surrey, Burnaby and North Vancouver, parents are free to teach their children during public swim times.

 

“The city welcomes parents and guardians to teach their children or support their swim practice during any public swim hours,” a spokesperson from the City of Surrey said. “Swimming success for children and youth is enhanced by regular visits to the pool and by support from a parent or guardian.”

 

In North Vancouver, “parents or guardians are welcome to review and practice safe swimming skills with their own children during public swim sessions as long as they are not impeding access to any area of the pool or disrupting other pool users,” a district spokesperson said.

 

It’s a similar story for families in Burnaby. “As long as parents are paying admission, following pool rules and not monopolizing pool space, there are no issues with parents teaching their kids how to swim,” a city spokesperson said.

 

In Richmond, the main concern around parents teaching their children to swim at public pools is safety.

 

“Parents or guardians can certainly teach their own children or family member to swim in a public pool, but we strongly encourage people to consider using a qualified instructor. Swimming is an important safety skill and one we highly recommend for everyone, regardless of age, to learn,” a city spokesperson said.

 

Confusion over Vancouver’s swim-teaching rules comes as families struggle to get their kids into public lessons. The city’s subsidized swim programs, although more affordable than private lessons, are often oversubscribed, with spots filling up quickly.

 

“Overall, demand remains high across the city,” the park board said Wednesday. “We are actively working as part of our facility renewal planning to increase our capacity and ability to meet this growing demand,” the board said.

Police Scotland has issued a statement over an incident in Dundee that has seen figures such as Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson accused of spreading misinformation.

 

Video footage taken on Saturday afternoon shows a young girl brandishing a knife and a hatchet by the side of a busy dual carriageway in the city.

 

The youngster can be heard to shout "fing kid bashers" and another girl yells: "Don't fing punch my little sister, she's 12." Meanwhile, a man behind the camera says: "Show the knife, show the knife."

 

Claims on social media suggested the girls had been followed, recorded and "chatted up" by two adults. A 12-year-old girl has since been charged and Police Scotland's most senior officer in the city has now spoken out about the case.

 

Chief Superintendent Nicola Russell said: "We are aware of misinformation being shared on social media in relation to an incident where a Bulgarian couple were approached by youths in St Ann Lane, Dundee, on Saturday, 23 August, 2025.

 

"A 12-year-old girl has been charged with being in possession of offensive weapons. She will be referred to the relevant authorities and our enquiries are ongoing. We would like to thank the local community for their help with our investigation and would urge the public not to share misinformation about this incident or speculate on the circumstances."

 

As we reported yesterday, some have hailed the girl as an "iconic figure", while Musk – the world's richest man and the owner of social media platform, X – reposted a comment about the girl being recorded by "a migrant".

 

Meanwhile, right-wing activist Robinson – real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – said they were being "filmed by a migrant" and described it as "very concerning".

 

Despite fierce criticism, the fact that the people involved were migrants has now been confirmed. However, it is not known what happened before the footage was shot and it may be that the two adults were simply minding their own business before being confronted by the youngsters.

 

Officers are understood to have reviewed CCTV and made other inquiries but found nothing to support the allegations made against the Bulgarian couple. The police previously said the girl who has been charged was 14, although this error has now been corrected in today's statement.

 

Nadia El-Nakla – SNP councillor for Dundee's West End and wife of ex-First Minister Humza Yousaf – told The Courier: "This is deeply concerning for many reasons. Everyone has the right to feel safe in our streets. Carrying a knife is a crime, and we must uphold a policy of zero tolerance towards knife crime."

 

Ms El-Nakla, the equalities spokeswoman for the Dundee SNP group, added: "It is also clear that elements of the far right are attempting to hijack this incident to spread a racist, anti-immigration agenda. This is both dangerous and divisive, and it threatens the cohesion of our communities.

 

"Here in Dundee, we will not allow this to take root. The facts of the incident have been provided by our police service. These should be trusted — not the disinformation being pushed by those who wish to vilify asylum seekers and immigrants."

 

Police Scotland said: "Around 7.40pm on Saturday, August 23, we received a report of a female youth with a weapon in St Ann Lane, Dundee. Officers attended and a [12-year-old] girl was charged in connection. She will be reported to the relevant authorities."

A hacker used AI to automate an 'unprecedented' cybercrime spree, Anthropic says

The company behind the Claude chatbot said it caught a hacker using its chatbot to identify, hack and extort at least 17 companies.

A hacker has exploited a leading artificial intelligence chatbot to conduct the most comprehensive and lucrative AI cybercriminal operation known to date, using it to do everything from find targets to write ransom notes.

 

In a report published Tuesday, Anthropic, the company behind the popular Claude chatbot, said that anunnamed hacker “used AI to what we believe is an unprecedented degree” to research, hack and extort at least 17 companies.

 

Cyber extortion, where hackers steal information like sensitive user data or trade secrets, is a common criminal tactic. And AI has made some of that easier, with scammers using AI chatbots for help writing phishing emails. In recent months, hackers of all stripes have increasingly incorporated AI tools in their work.

 

But the case Anthropic found is the first publicly documented instance in which a hacker used a leading AI company’s chatbot to automate almost an entire cybercrime spree.

 

According to the blog post, one of Anthropic’s periodic reports on threats,the operation began with the hacker convincing Claude Code — Anthropic’s chatbot that specializes in “vibe coding,” or creating computer programming based on simple requests — to identify companies vulnerable to attack. Claude then created malicious software to actually steal sensitive information from the companies. Next, it organized the hacked files and analyzed them to both help determine what was sensitive and could be used to extort the victim companies.

 

The chatbot then analyzed the companies’ hacked financial documents to help determine a realistic amount of bitcoin to demand in exchange for the hacker’s promise not to publish that material. It also wrote suggested extortion emails.

 

Jacob Klein, head of threat intelligence for Anthropic, said that the campaign appeared to come from an individual hacker outside of the U.S. and happen over the span of three months.

 

"We have robust safeguards and multiple layers of defense for detecting this kind of misuse, but determined actors sometimes attempt to evade our systems through sophisticated techniques," he said.

Anthropic declined to name any of the 17 companies, but said they included a defense contractor, a financial institution and multiple health care providers. The stolen data included Social Security numbers, bank details and patients’ sensitive medical information. The hacker also took files related to sensitive defense information regulated by the U.S. State Department, known as International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

 

It’s not clear how many of the companies paid or how much money the hacker made, but the extortion demands ranged from around $75,000 to more than $500,000, the report said.

 

The burgeoning AI industry is almost entirely unregulated by the federal government and is generally encouraged to self-police.

 

Anthropic, a leading AI company, is broadly regarded as taking safety seriously. It declined to say how a hacker was able to exploit Claude Code so severely but said it had implemented some additional safeguards.

 

“While we have taken steps to prevent this type of misuse, we expect this model to become increasingly common as AI lowers the barrier to entry for sophisticated cybercrime operations,” the report found.

RFK Jr. says agency will reveal causes of autism in September

 

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday he’s on track to identify “interventions” that are “certainly causing autism” and possible ways of addressing them by September.

 

In April, Kennedy vowed to find the cause of growing rates of autism, calling it an “epidemic” that “dwarfs the COVID epidemic.”

 

President Trump asked Kennedy for a progress update during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, saying, “The autism is such a tremendous horror show. What’s happening in our country and some other countries, but mostly our country. How are you doing?”

 

“We are doing very well,” Kennedy responded. “We will have announcements as promised in September, finding interventions, certain interventions, now that are clearly almost certainly causing autism. And we’re going to be able to address those in September.”

 

Kennedy has long claimed that environmental factors, or vaccines, are likely culprits behind the rising rate of autism diagnoses, arguing research to back this up has been blocked by federal authorities. He argued in April that autism should be prevented because autistic people are burdens on their family and society.

 

“These are kids who will never pay taxes, they’ll never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go out on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted,” Kennedy said. “Autism destroys families.”

 

During the Cabinet meeting, Kennedy pointed to his oft-repeated evidence of environmental factors contributing to autism rates, noting how diagnosis rates have significantly jumped since the 1970s.

 

“So, there has to be something artificially causing this, meaning a drug or something. And I know you’re looking very strongly at different things, and I hope you can come out with that as soon as possible,” Trump said.

 

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 31 children and 1 in 45 adults in the U.S. have autism, significantly higher than the 1 in 150 rate just a few decades ago. But according to experts, this is more likely due to autism detection improving since the diagnosis was first developed and the criteria broadening over the years. The first time someone was diagnosed with autism was in 1943.

 

“Rates of autism without intellectual disability, that is increasing faster than diagnoses of autism with intellectual disability, which shows that if that group that would have been missed in the past that is making up the larger portion of the increase in diagnoses,” Zoe Gross, director of advocacy at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, told The Hill in June.

Xi Jinping makes rare Tibet visit amid row over Dalai Lama succession

 

Xi Jinping has called for unity during a rare visit to Tibet, where thousands marked the region’s 60 years as an autonomous Chinese state with songs, dances, a parade – and placards heaping praise on the Communist Party.

 

In his second visit to the tightly controlled Himalayan territory, Mr Xi thanked local officials for their “struggle against separatism”.

 

According to state media, he also called for the creation of a “modern socialist” Tibet that is “united, prosperous, civilised, harmonious and beautiful”.

 

His surprise trip to the regional capital Lhasa, some 2,200 miles from Beijing, dominated national newspaper headlines and television bulletins on Thursday.

 

Unsurprisingly, there was little mention of long-standing resistance to Chinese rule, or a renewed dispute with the Dalai Lama over succession.

 

It is now 66 years since the Tibetan spiritual leader fled to India following a failed uprising, and 60 years since China formally established Tibet as its fifth and final autonomous region.

 

That designation was supposed to provide ethnic minority groups a larger say over policy, including freedom of religious belief. But rights groups and exiles have instead consistently described China’s rule of the mountain-top state as “oppressive”, documenting the demolition of some monasteries, imprisonment of monks, and gradual erosion of a centuries-old Tibetan identity.

 

While Beijing denies oppression, critics say institutional control has only tightened since Mr Xi rose to power – with Tibetan children now forced to study in Mandarin at state-run Chinese schools, and the president arguing for stronger regulation of “religious affairs”.

 

In recent months, these tensions exploded in a bitter dispute with the Dalai Lama. While he has called for a “middle way” of genuine self-rule within China, he is considered a separatist by Beijing.

 

Now the two sides are in an argument over succession. As the current Dalai Lama turned 90 this year, he announced a non-profit institution he set up would have sole authority to select his successor. China’s leaders responded angrily, saying that only they have the right to appoint his reincarnation.

 

They also continue to restrict the Dalai Lama’s contact with foreign leaders, suggesting it sends the wrong message to “separatist” groups. Last week, Beijing said it would “cease all engagement” with the Czech president Petr Pavel, as he met the spiritual leader in India on a private trip.

 

But recent divisions were pushed to the side during Mr Xi’s trip this week, where he was joined by a massive delegation from Beijing. The president visited Tibet once in 2021, and before that the last Chinese leader to make the trip was Jiang Zemin in 1990.

 

According to officials, life for ordinary people has improved drastically under Chinese rule – with poverty falling and infrastructure expanding.

 

It was this that was being celebrated on Thursday, according to footage broadcast on national television showing a “grand gathering” in a massive square by Lhasa’s Potala Palace – once the Dalai Lama’s winter residence.

 

In the images, thousands of people hold red flags and placards emphasising the need to follow Xi’s guidance.

 

“Adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and fully implement the Party’s strategy for governing Tibet in the new era,” one of the placards read, according to Reuters.

 

Another one said: “Grateful to the general secretary, grateful to the Party Central Committee, and thankful to the people of the whole country.”

Mercedes-Benz’s pension trust will divest its stake worth roughly $346 million in Nissan Motor, a company spokesperson reportedly said on Monday.

 

The spokesperson added that Nissan holdings, which were moved into pension assets in 2016, were not strategically significant while framing the sale of the remaining 3.8% stake as part of a portfolio cleanup. Nissan stake makes up 2.7% of the company’s total holdings, with Diamler Truck constituting nearly 93%.

 

Mercedes-Benz is Nissan’s second-largest shareholder after Renault — 35.7% stake — LSEG data showed.

 

The move puts further strain on the Japanese automaker’s stock that has been under pressure from U.S. tariffs, declining sales and the transition to electric vehicles amid steep global competition, in particular from Chinese rivals.

 

Late last year, the firm entered short-lived discussions with Honda over a possible partnership that would have formed the world’s third-biggest carmaker, but negotiations fell apart in February.

 

In May, the company announced plans to slash 11,000 jobs and shut down seven plants. Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said in June that the company’s short-term focus was to fix the struggling automaker as it undergoes major restructuring.

 

In July, U.S. auto tariffs were lowered to 15% from the previously announced 25% in some relief for Japanese automakers including Nissan. The original 25% tariff was halved to 12.5%, before adding a 2.5% “Most Favored Nation” base tariff, taking the total to 15%.

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is doubling down on his message to President Donald Trump that the nation’s third-largest city doesn’t need or want military intervention to fight crime, showing off parts of the city where violent crime has decreased and saying sending in the National Guard could only escalate problems.

“We want to make sure and show off that there’s no emergency happening in Chicago,” the Democrat told The Associated Press on Wednesday while walking in a South Side neighborhood where revitalization in recent years has included an art studio, aquarium store and wine bar.

“We’ve been fighting crime.We’ve been tryingto prevent crime and it’s been working.”

Trump and Pritzker, eyed as a possible 2028 presidential contender, have traded insults for days over a supposed plan that could deploy the National Guard to Chicago and Baltimore, as the administration has done in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Pritzker and city leaders vow to sue but, in the meantime, Pritzker has convened showy news conferences, posted sarcastic social media and choreographed a campaign-style neighborhood stop, keeping Chicago in the spotlight.

The back-and-forth comes as polls suggest support for Trump’s aggressive focus on crime in big cities run by Democrats and Pritzker, a wealthy businessman seeking a third term, continues to build his national profile.

Eyes now on Chicago

Chicago has long been one of Trump’s favorite targets, with him likening it to a war zone, and this week, a “hellhole.” The city’s decades-old sanctuary status has also irked the Trump administration and prompted lawsuits. In January, Trump kicked off a nationwide crackdown on immigration in Chicago, with arrests livestreamed by television personality “Dr. Phil” McGraw.

“Panic stricken Governor Pritzker says that crime is under control, when in fact it is just the opposite. He is an incompetent Governor who should call me for HELP,” Trump posted Tuesday on his Truth Social media platform.

The possibility of military patrols in Chicago was swiftly condemned by Mayor Brandon Johnson, religious leaders and activist groups who argue that crime is down…

“What he’s trying to do is try to inflame something that will cause a problem that he can then point at,” Pritzker told AP.

The city reported 573 homicides in 2024, the most of any U.S. city that year, according to the Rochester Institute of Technology. At the same time, violent crime dropped significantly in the first half of the year, representing the steepest decline in over a decade, according to city data. In the first six months of 2025, total violent crime dropped by over 22% when compared with the same time period last year. (So 574 deaths almost two a day is a good statistic?)

…The vast majority of Americans, 81%, see crime as a “major problem” in large cities, according to a new AP-NORC poll released Wednesday. Trump has seized on those concerns as he has deployed the National Guard to the District of Columbia and threatened to expand that model elsewhere. The approach appears to be helping Trump, at least for the moment, as the poll showed his overall approval rating increased slightly, from 40% in July to 45% now.

 

About half of U.S. adults, 53%, say they approve of Trump’s handling of crime, the poll finds. But there is less public support for federal takeovers of local police departments, the poll also found. That suggests opinions could shift, depending on how aggressively Trump pursues his threats. ..

 

Pritzker’s political theater

Since details of the possible plan emerged last week, Pritzker has invited reporters aboard a Chicago River water taxi for a picturesque ride, convened about 100 of the city’s most powerful leaders for a solidarity news conference and made digs at Trump in a narrated video of his morning walk along Lake Michigan.

 

By Wednesday, he opted for a less touristy locale away from downtown, greeting a crowd at a soul food restaurant in the historically Black Bronzeville neighborhood on the city’s South Side, where revitalization efforts have been ongoing. While Cleo’s is usually closed on Wednesdays, the restaurant’s owner opened for Pritzker and packed the small space with family and staff, all supporters of the two-term governor.

How Capitol Hill is addressing politically motivated violence

Washington — Whether in Washington, D.C., or back in their home states, Democratic Rep.Hillary Scholten of Michigan and Republican Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee are constantly on guard.

 

"Mr. Burchett and I are both people of strong faith, so I can say I put faith over fear every single day, and I continue to do this job," Scholten told CBS News when asked if she feels safe.

 

"No, I don't feel safe. But my head is on a swivel all the time," Burchett added. "Trust, but verify."

 

Nearly 9,500 threats and concerning statements were made against Congress in 2024, according to U.S. Capitol Police.

 

Under a new pilot program, lawmakers are getting a temporary increase of up to $20,000 for security upgrades at their homes, plus $5,000 per month to hire personal security.

 

The program was launched this month following a meeting before the summer recessbetween House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. It runs through the 2025 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

 

"At the end of September, we're going to look at that, evaluate all the data points, see how effective it was, how it was utilized, and then make decisions going forward," Johnson told CBS News. "We have to protect member security and everybody who works here on the Hill."

 

The program follows a wave of political violence, from the assassination attempt against President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, to a pair of shootings in June in Minnesota that killed Democratic Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, and left another Democratic Minnesota lawmaker and his wife wounded.

 

Immediately following the Minnesota shootings, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he asked Capitol Police to increase security for senators.

 

Scholten says that threats and shootings targeting politicians "is not a partisan issue," noting that the Minnesota shootings occurred exactly eight years to the day that Republican Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana was shot and wounded at a Republican Congressional Baseball team practice.

 

Scholten has resumed public events in her Grand Rapids district.She had postponed a town hall after learning she and other congressional members were named to the Minnesota shooting suspect's hit list.

 

"I was at home alone with my two kids, and I was terrified," Scholten said of her reaction when she first learned of the Minnesota shootings. The suspect was not captured until nearly two days after the shootings.

 

"Obviously at home is where we're most vulnerable," Burchett said."I was swatted. I've been accosted in airports."

 

Burchett said he doesn't know what lawmakers on both sides of the aisle can do to tone down the rhetoric, calling the situation "very difficult."

 

"I think doing things like this, you know, coming together and recognizing areas in which we do have agreement," Scholten said.

An illegal migrant wanted in multiple states for stealing high-end jewelry was nabbed in Florida Monday after authorities spotted a hulking $40,000 Rolex hanging off his 10-year-old son’s wrist.

 

Marcu Rostas, a 33-year-old “traveling gypsy,” was cuffed just one day after allegedly robbing a jewelry store in Stuart, Fla., according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

 

When authorities pulled over the oblivious Romanian national, he was with his wife and two young children — who were both wearing pieces of the looted luxury bling.

 

Rostas’ son was wearing a Rolex worth more than $40,000 much too big for his little wrist. His daughter was also wearing a pricey necklace, according to the sheriff’s office.

 

Cops soon found even more stolen jewels inside the car, including a $40,000 diamond ring, gold chains, gold coins, $30,000 in cash and additional deluxe watches. The sheriff estimated that the items in the car were worth a whopping $400,000.

 

The loot of stolen goods was hidden inside one of his children’s stuffed animals, cops said.

 

“Rostas traveled the nation victimizing people, but Sunday, his crime spree hit a figurative brick wall, known by many as the #WrongExit,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

 

The nomadic thief is wanted in multiple other states for similar robberies.

 

During their probe, investigators also uncovered multiple fake identifications Rostas had used and determined he was in the country illegally from Romania.

 

Officials said the sticky-fingered dad is part of a large group of traveling “distraction thieves,” also know as gypsies.

 

“Rostas is part of a larger network of traveling distraction thieves, sometimes referred to as ‘traveling gypsies,’ who move through the United States, targeting unsuspecting victims by using deceptive tricks to steal large amounts of money or valuables,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook.

 

Their schemes often include women and children who serve as distractions while the men get to pillaging, officials said.

 

“While one member distracts the victim, another quietly steals jewelry, cash, or other valuables within seconds. They hit jewelry stores, retail facilities, and sometimes private homes,” the sheriff’s office added.

 

Rostas hasn’t been charged yet. Immigration officers responded to the scne of his arrest and an ICE detainer was placed on him.

ABC News journalist ripped to shreds online over misleading claim linking Trump to trans shooter

 

Critics of the media found a new target on Wednesday after an ABC News reporter made a misleading claim pointing to the motivations of the Minneapolis transgender shooting suspect.

 

Investigators have not yet declared any determination about the motivations of Robin Westman, who reportedly killed himself after shooting about 20 people and killing two children aged 8 and 10 years old at a Catholic church.

 

‘Nice job following the mass media narrative. Nice job saying what you have been told to say.’

 

While reporting on the evidence gathered by the suspect, Aaron Katersky said only that Westman had the word “Trump” on his weapon but did not explain that he had written, “Kill Donald Trump,” rather than just his name.

 

“23-year-old Robin Westman was able to leave what police called a video manifesto that they’re now going through to try to establish motive,” he said.

 

“We’ve also been going through it, and I can tell you there are crude diagrams of the church. There are also photos of the weapons, and they include all sorts of writings, the names of past mass shooters, criticism of Israel, the name of President Trump written on the guns,” Katersky added.

 

“There are also racial slurs, nihilistic statements,” he continued, “all painting the picture of a disturbed individual who carried out this mass shooting on the first week of school at the Annunciation Church in Minneapolis.”

 

Video of Katersky’s comments were posted to social media, where they quickly went viral. Many believed the reporter intentionally crafted the comments to imply the alleged shooter was pro-Trump.

 

“The Catholic school shooter’s gun said ‘Kill Donald Trump.’ To mention his gun ‘had Trump’s name written on it’ without sharing the full context is misleading at best,” reporter Olivia Rondeau responded.

 

“He left it vague enough to allow people to think that it was a right wing shooter,” another response reads.

 

“Aaron Katersky not so subtly insinuates a false link between the trans lunatic shooter and Donald Trump. Hey, @AaronKatersky. The murderous trans maniac wanted the President dead. Why is that so hard to say?” another critic replied.
