Indonesia's president cancels China trip as protests continue

 

JAKARTA: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Saturday (Aug 30) cancelled a planned trip to China as days of protests spread further outside the capital Jakarta, with several regional parliament buildings set ablaze.

 

Prabowo had been due to attend a "Victory Day" parade in China on Sep 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, following Japan's formal surrender.

 

The protests, the first major test for Prabowo's nearly year-old government, began in Jakarta this week over lawmakers' pay and worsened after a police vehicle hit and killed a motorcycle rider.

 

"The president wants to continue monitoring (the situation in Indonesia) directly…and seek the best solutions," presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi said in a video statement on Saturday.

 

"Therefore, the president apologises to the Chinese government that he could not attend the invitation."

 

Another consideration in cancelling the trip was a United Nations General Assembly session in September, Prasetyo said.

 

In the light of the protest, short-video app TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance, said on Saturday it had suspended its live feature in Indonesia for a few days.

 

Jakarta had this week summoned representatives of social media platforms, including as Meta Platforms Inc and TikTok, and told them to boost content moderation because disinformation had spread online. The government says that such disinformation has spurred protests against it.

 

Earlier on Saturday, protesters caused fires at regional parliament buildings in three provinces - West Nusa Tenggara, Pekalongan city in Central Java and Cirebon city in West Java, local media reported.

 

Local media Detik said protesters had looted parliamentary office equipment in Cirebon and police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Pekalongan and West Nusa Tenggara.

 

Three people were killed on Friday in an arson attack on a parliament building in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province, Indonesia's disaster management agency said.

 

State news agency Antara said the victims had been trapped in the burning building, and the disaster management agency said two people were injured after jumping out of the building to escape the fire.

 

Local media outlet metrotvnews.com reported one further death from a fire at the Makassar parliamentary building. This could not be independently confirmed.

 

Protests also occurred on the holiday island of Bali, where tear gas was used against protesters.

 

Local media also reported that a crowd had looted the Jakarta home of Ahmad Sahroni, a lawmaker from the political party NasDem, and taken items including household furniture.

 

Sahroni has faced accusations of responding insensitively to people calling for parliament to be dissolved amid anger over lawmakers' allowances. Sahroni has labelled such critics "the stupidest people in the world".

Now a battle for control of Indonesia is flaring between the US and China. Indonesia has the largest population, (286 million) and the largest GDP by far in S E Asia ($1.4 Trillion in 2024).

Another source says, “It looks like many people will be shot tomorrow. The Regional Police Chief has prepared live ammunition and rubber bullets.”

 

A third source says, “The government/policemen are targeting the Chinese again… because they have the money.”

 

He adds, “Remember that when current President Prabowo Subianto was the head of the special military force called Kopassus in 1997, 400 plus university students disappeared, never to be seen again. The students were demonstrating for weeks during the Asian financial crisis. Chinese women were being raped in the streets by the police and military, and nothing was done to stop it.”

 

Already, Parliament buildings are being burned down in Indonesia, and the Chinese are being attacked.

Angela Rayner has reportedly quit the Government over the scandal involving her tax affairs.

 

The bombshell news was reported by Sky News shortly after an independent ethics probe into the Deputy Prime Minister's tax affairs reported to the Prime Minister on whether she broke ministerial standards rules.

 

One minister conceded on Friday morning there was "frustration" about the investigation process, and said it would be a "good thing" for the Government if the probe concluded quickly.

 

It comes as lawyers she blamed for her stamp duty underpayment denied having given her tax advice.

 

Sir Keir Starmer repeatedly declined to say whether he would sack his deputy, who is also the Housing Secretary, if his independent ethics watchdog rules against her.

 

The Prime Minister said he would "of course" act on the findings of Sir Laurie Magnus's probe following Ms Rayner's stunning acknowledgement that she failed to pay a£40,000tax surcharge on a flat she bought in Hove this year.

 

In a fresh twist on Friday, investment minister Baroness Poppy Gustafsson was reported to be set to leave the government.

 

Sky News said this pointed to a possible government reshuffle.

Russia is not shifting its foreign policy to the East or anywhere else, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said following President Vladimir Putin’s recent four-day visit to China.

 

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Peskov was asked if the president’s trip could be interpreted as official “documentation”that Moscow has reoriented eastward.

 

”You can’t put it that way,” Peskov objected.“Nothing has been formalized, and it is impossible to formally record any kind of turns. Furthermore, Russia is not planning to turn anywhere, that would be a mistake. In fact, it has already always been in the East,” he added.

 

The spokesman added thatRussia continues to develop its strategic and privileged partnership with China, as well as ties with other countries in the region and with the Global South. According to Peskov, the ongoing processes of global transformation are leading many of these states tounite around a shared vision of the need to transform the international system.

 

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Friday,Putin stressed that Russia had never turned its back on anyone and always “looks both ways,” just like the two-headed eagle on the country’s national symbols.

There is little point in holding direct talks with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said,adding that he is nonetheless prepared to do so.He made the remarks during the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Friday.

 

Putin said reaching agreements with Kiev on key issues would be “practically impossible.”He explained that even with political will, there are “legal and technical difficulties” related to territorial questions. The president was referring to the status of Crimea and other regions that voted to join Russia in referendums in 2014 and 2022.

 

“The leadership of the Kiev regime, to put it mildly, spoke of us in unflattering terms and ruled out any possibility of direct contacts. Now we see that they are asking for such contacts, or at least proposing them. I have said many times already that I am ready for these contacts,” Putin said, adding that he does not see “much sense in it.”

 

Putin argued that any agreements with Kiev must be confirmed by referendum under Ukraine’s constitution.But to hold a referendum, the martial law imposed after the escalation of the conflict with Russia in February 2022 would need to be lifted.

 

If this took place, presidential elections would have to be held, Putin said, again questioning Zelensky’s status as head of state.

 

Zelensky’s presidential term expired last May, but he has refused to hold elections, citing martial law.

 

“Therefore, this endless process leads nowhere. Nevertheless, we have said that we are ready for meetings at the highest level,” Putin noted.

 

The Russian leader stressed that Moscow would be the best place for possible negotiations. “The Ukrainian side wants a meeting? Come! We will ensure security,” Putin said.

 

Earlier this week, at a press conference in China, Putin reiterated his readiness in principle to meet with Zelensky, suggesting that he could travel to the Russian capital to negotiate peace terms.

 

Kiev has rejected the proposal; according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga, Zelensky takes a possible meeting with Putin seriously and is ready “at any time,” but will not accept “deliberately unacceptable proposals.”

Thierry Mariani has voiced support for Evgenia Gutsul after her seven-year sentence

 

The seven-year prison term handed to Euroskeptic Moldovan politician Evgenia Gutsul is anattempt to “repress” the opposition in the country, French European Parliament member Thierry Mariani has said.

 

Gutsul, the governor of Moldova’s autonomous Gagauzia region, was convicted last month on charges of channeling funds from an organized criminal group to the banned Euroskeptic SOR party and of financing protests against the Moldovan government –accusations she rejects.

 

Mariani, a member of the French right-wing National Rally party, weighed in on the case in a post on X on Thursday, writing: “After Romania, the Eurocratic judicial repression is falling on the opposition in Moldova. On the eve of her birthday, support for Evgenia Gutsul,governor of Gagauzia, unjustly sentenced to seven years in prison for having defended political pluralism in her country.”

 

Gutsul has consistently advocated closer ties with Russia, and has described the proceedings as a “political execution”carried out “on orders from above.” Her sentencing triggered protests outside the courthouse in Chisinau, where hundreds of supporters denounced what they said was political repression by Moldova’s pro-Western government.

 

Russia has also condemned the ruling. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the decision was “an example of blatant and unlawful pressure on political opponents” and accused Moldova of suppressing dissent ahead of elections.

 

Gutsul has served as the head of Gagauzia, an autonomous and predominantly Russian-speaking region in southern Moldova, since winning the 2023 election as the SOR candidate. The party was banned the same year over allegations of illicit financing from abroad. Gutsul campaigned on promises of closer ties with Russia, in contrast with the pro-Western stance of the government of President Maia Sandu.

Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin commented on the recent meeting of Ukraine’s European backers – dubbed the “coalition of the willing” – in Paris. He reiterated Moscow’s opposition to the group’s proposals for the deployment of troops to Ukraine.

 

“The West’s dragging of Ukraine into NATO was one of the causes of the conflict. If any troops show up now, while the hostilities are ongoing, we would consider them legitimate military targets,”Putin said.

 

“If decisions are made that result in long-term peace, then I simply see no sense in such a presence,” he added. “Nobody should doubt that Russia would implement the agreed terms fully. We will respect security guarantees that both Russia and Ukraine need to be offered.”

 

Putin also noted thatKiev’s backers have not seriously discussed security guarantees with Moscow.

 

The coalition – including the UK, France, Germany, and other European nations providing weapons to Kiev – is weighing possible security commitments,although many of its members have publicly rejected sending ground forces to Ukraine.(No country wants to do it and none of them enough enough soldiers to make a difference.)

 

Earlier this week, former Polish President AndrzejDuda said the Ukrainian leadership is “dreaming” of drawing NATO into a direct war with Russia. 47 Tucanae: Globular Star Cluster

 

Also known as NGC 104, 47 Tucanae is a jewel of the southern sky. Not a star but a dense cluster of stars, it roams the halo of our Milky Way Galaxy along with some 200 other globular star clusters. The second brightest globular cluster (after Omega Centauri) as seen from planet Earth, 47 Tuc lies about 13,000 light-years away. It can be spotted with the naked eye close on the sky to the Small Magellanic Cloud in the constellation of the Toucan. The dense cluster is made up of hundreds of thousands of stars in a volume only about 120 light-years across. Red giant stars on the outskirts of the cluster are easy to pick out as yellowish stars in this sharp telescopic portrait. Tightly packed globular star cluster 47 Tuc is also home to a star with the closest known orbit around a black hole.

Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Displays Broad Coma and Growing Tail

Using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on the Gemini South telescope at NSF’s International Gemini Observatory in the Chilean Andes, astronomers have captured new multi-color images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS.

3I/ATLAS was discovered by the NASA-funded ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) survey telescope in Rio Hurtado, Chile, on July 1, 2025.

 

The comet will reach its closest approach to the Sun around October 30, 2025, at a distance of 1.4 AU (210 million km, or 130 million miles) — just inside the orbit of Mars.

In the new Gemini/GMOS images, GMOS displays a broad coma and a tail spanning about 1/120th of a degree in the sky and pointing away from the Sun.

 

These features are significantly more extended than they appeared in earlier images of the comet, showing that 3I/ATLAS has become more active as it travels through the inner Solar System.

The new observations also suggest that the dust and ice of the comet are broadly similar to solar system comets, hinting at shared processes in the formation of planetary systems around other stars.

 

“As 3I/ATLAS speeds back into the depths of interstellar space, these images are both a scientific milestone and a source of wonder,” said Dr. Karen Meech, an astronomer with the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawai’i.

“It reminds us that our Solar System is just one part of a vast and dynamic galaxy — and that even the most fleeting visitors can leave a lasting impact.”

 

More than just capturing stunning images, the main scientific motivation of the observing session was to collect the comet’s spectrum, which refers to the wavelengths of light that it emits.

A spectrum can tell scientists information about the comet’s composition and chemistry, which allows them to understand how the comet changes as it passes through the Solar System.

 

“The primary objectives of the observations were to look at the colors of the comet, which provide clues to the composition and sizes of the dust particles in the coma, and to take spectra for a direct measure of the chemistry,” Dr. Meech said.

“We were excited to see the growth of the tail, suggesting a change in the particles from the previous Gemini images, and we got our first glimpse of the chemistry from the spectrum.”

 

“These observations provide both a breathtaking view and critical scientific data,” said Dr. Bryce Bolin, a researcher at Eureka Scientific.

“Every interstellar comet is a messenger from another star system, and by studying their light and color, we can begin to understand the diversity of worlds beyond our own.”

Most critical are Sections 1031 and 1032 of the Act, which authorize detaining U.S. citizens indefinitely without charge or trial if deemed necessary by the president. The bill would allow federal officials to take these steps based on suspicions only, without having to demonstrate to any judicial official that there is solid evidence to justify their actions. No reasonable proof will any longer be required for the government to suspend an American citizen's constitutional rights. Detentions can follow mere membership, past or present, in "suspect organizations." Government agents would have unchecked authority to arrest, interrogate, and indefinitely detain law-abiding citizens if accused of potentially posing a threat to "national security." Further, military personnel anywhere in the world would be authorized to seize U.S. citizens without due process. s.

United States immigration authorities have arrested at least 450 people in a raid on a Hyundai manufacturing site in Georgia, federal officials confirmed Friday.

NASA, Partners Adjust Next Cygnus Resupply Launch

September 5, 2025

 

NASA, Northrop Grumman, and SpaceX are accelerating the next commercial resupply flight to the International Space Station to maximize launch opportunities following an assessment of mission readiness.

NASA now is targeting no earlier than 6:11 p.m. EDT, Sunday, Sept. 14, for the launch of a Northrop Grumman Cygnus XL on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

 

The Cygnus XL spacecraft will deliver more than 11,000 pounds of science, research, and supplies* to the orbital complex, including materials to produce semiconductor crystals in space and equipment to develop improvements for cryogenic fuel tanks.

The spacecraft also will deliver a specialized UV light system to prevent biofilm growth and supplies to produce pharmaceutical crystals that could treat cancer and other diseases.

NASA is targeting arrival of the Cygnus XL spacecraft and its installation aboard the space station on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

 

The International Space Station is a convergence of science, technology, and human innovation that enables research not possible on Earth.

For almost 25 years, people have continuously lived and worked aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies that enable us to prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

I believe the Arabs?, his students, and the society in general, directly killed Jalal al din Rumi's teacher, Shams; and that's what inspired his poetry; a form of mourning.

I pretty much believe that Rumi was "in love" with his teacher Shams.

It was a scandal, Maybe why they killed Shams of Tabriz? Also unorthodox religious beliefs?

Amazing poetry regardless.

That was kinda cute. LIke my 7 1/2 month old Golden Retriever checking out new stuff. Sniffing, barking if he's unsure and then zooming around the house once he figures it out!!!! kek
