Ian Watkins has reportedly been stabbed to death in a prison attack. He has reportedly been killed behind bars after being stabbed by another inmate at Wakefield Prison. The disgraced former singer of the Welsh rock band Lostprophets, was murdered in jail in a knife attack by another inmate, The Sun reports. He is said to have had his throat slashed after inmates at Wakefield Prison were unlocked from their cells yesterday. A source told the publication: "Watkins has been killed in the most brutal way possible - and the attack was shocking, even by prison standards. He was targeted by another inmate who shanked him in the neck. Guards were nearby and raced to the scene pretty quickly - but there was nothing they could do, and they could not save him.

 

"It was a horrific scene, with blood everywhere and alarms and sirens going off. Police and ambulances were called and the whole prison was locked down with all cons confined to their cells. He has been attacked a few times inside Wakefield over the last few years, so perhaps this was just a matter of time." The source added that it appeared to be a "pre-planned" attack.

The Ukrainian military is incapable of fully blunting Russian strikes on Kiev’s energy infrastructure, making blackouts all but certain, a senior Ukrainian lawmaker has warned, urging citizens to consider temporarily moving out of the city in the coming months.

On Friday, Maryana Bezuglaya weighed in on the recent wave of devastating Russian strikes, which Ukrainian officials said caused massive power outages in Kiev.

 

“Regardless of the protection and air defense, Russia can destroy almost any critical infrastructure facility in Ukraine at will.

The only question is the number of missiles and drones,” she said, adding that if a single power plant is hammered by dozens of strikes, it would almost certainly be crippled.

 

Bezuglaya reiterated her warning in late summer, when she said, “the winter would be difficult, and there would be blackouts.”

She urged Ukrainians to be realistic about the challenges ahead, stock up on essentials, and support each other during the crisis.

 

The best thing is to consider temporarily moving out of the city this fall and winter. This especially applies to Kiev residents. Kiev is a strategic and symbolic target.

It is possible that it will be completely ‘drained down’. Darkness without sewage and water supply in mid-winter,” the MP said.

 

On Friday, the local authorities reported that Russian strikes had hit Kiev’s left bank particularly hard, with many areas experiencing blackouts and water supply problems, with similar issues recorded in the rest of the capital.

Media reports indicated that several strikes affected Kiev’s Thermal Power Plant No. 6, one of the city’s key electricity suppliers. According to some estimates, over the last ten days, a total of 63 energy facilities across the country have come under attack.

 

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that its forces had launched a massive strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, stating that “all designated targets were hit.”

It stressed that the attack came in response to “terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime on civilian sites in Russia.” Moscow maintains that it never targets civilians.

Ukraine and Russia exchanged overnight drone attacks across multiple fronts, with Kyiv calling it one of the largest assaults in weeks and Moscow saying its forces destroyed dozens of Ukrainian UAVs over its territory.

 

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 78 Shahed, Gerbera, and other attack drones from Orel, Millerovo, Kursk, and Chauda in Crimea on the night of Oct. 11.

 

“As of 09:00 (0600GMT), air defenses shot down or suppressed 54 enemy UAVs in the north, south, and east of the country,” the force said on Telegram, adding that 21 drones hit six locations and that the attack was ongoing.

 

Kyiv said air defense units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire groups were engaged in repelling the assault.

 

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 42 Ukrainian drones over several regions between 11 pm (2000GMT) on Oct. 10 and 7 am (0400GMT) on Oct. 11.

 

The ministry said 19 drones were downed over Volgograd, 15 over Rostov, three over Ulyanovsk, two each over Voronezh and Bashkortostan, and one over Saratov.

 

Both sides reported no casualties from the latest drone exchanges, which come amid more than a thousand days of the Russia-Ukraine war that began in February 2022.

Crypto-trader found dead in Kiev

Police reportedly suspect suicide after Konstantin Ganich’s body was found in his car

Konstantin Ganich, also knownas Kostya Kudo, a prominent Ukrainian crypto-trader and blogger, has been found dead with a gunshot wound to his head, in what the Kiev authorities are reportedly treating as a suspected suicide.

 

On Friday, crypto markets worldwide suffered one of the largest wipeouts in 2025, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement of new 100% tariffs on Chinese imports.

 

Early on Saturday, Kiev police discovered a dead body in a car, with a firearm registered in Ganich's name, several Ukrainian media outlets reported. While theauthorities revealed that the deceased was an “entrepreneur and blogger, whose activities were connected with cryptocurrencies,” they stopped short of identifying the person publicly.

 

Officials suspected he was a suicide victim and had “told his relatives about his depressed mood due to financial difficulties shortly before his death, and sent them a farewell message,” as quoted by Unian.

 

Later on Saturday, a post appeared in Ganich’s Telegram channel, confirming that the 32-year-old “had tragically perished.”

 

According to Unian, citing anonymous sources, amid the latest crypto-market crash,Ganich lost up to $30 million of investments he was managing, plus his own personal assets. The media outlet also reported that among his clients were allegedly unnamed Ukrainian officials and “influential people,” also that Ganich was involved with Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence. The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, expressed his deep dismay over the RSF’s actions, which appear to target civilians based on ethnicity, resulting in summary executions.

He condemned the relentless attacks on civilians and the destruction of critical infrastructure, calling for an immediate halt to the assaults.

 

Describing El-Fasher as “an open-air morgue,” activists highlighted the dire humanitarian situation facing its civilian population of around 400,000.

Nearly 18 months into the city’s siege, essential supplies have dwindled, with basic necessities becoming scarce and exorbitantly priced. The closure of most local soup kitchens due to food shortages has worsened the crisis.

In recent weeks, an artillery strike on a mosque claimed the lives of 13 displaced families, while continued assaults on El-Fasher Hospital resulted in at least 20 fatalities among those seeking medical care.

 

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health Organization, has urgently called for the protection of healthcare facilities and humanitarian access to assist healthcare workers and patients who are in desperate need.

Many hospitals in El-Fasher have faced continuous bombardment and have been forced to shutter their doors, leaving approximately 80 percent of those requiring medical attention without access to necessary care.

 

In a tragic escalation, last month, a drone strike on a mosque killed 75 individuals.

According to United Nations data, over one million people have fled El-Fasher since the conflict erupted, accounting for 10 percent of the total internally displaced population in Sudan.

The city’s population has been reduced by about 62 percent, underlining the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict.

 

Amid daily bombardments, many residents have resorted to seeking refuge in hastily constructed bunkers underground.

Should the RSF achieve dominance in El-Fasher, they would control the entirety of the Darfur region, posing significant implications for regional stability, particularly as the regular army maintains authority over northern, central, and eastern Sudan.

200 US soldiers arrive in Israel, as Witkoff confirms IDF troops completed first phase of withdrawal from Gaza

Some 200 US soldiers arrived in Israel on Saturday in an effort to ensure the historic peace agreement ending the war in Gaza holds.

“America’s sons and daughters in uniform are answering the call to deliver peace in the Middle East in support of the Commander in Chief’s direction in this historic moment,” Adm. Brad Cooper, head of the US Central Command, said.

“This great effort will be achieved with no US boots on the ground in Gaza.”

 

The American military isn’t expected to head into the Gaza Strip — but rather coordinate troops that will come from Egypt, Qatar and Turkey, and manage any heightened tensions with the Israelis.

Part of its role following President Trump’s peace agreement between Israel and Hamas has been described as making sure there are no violations or incursions from either side.

The US army will also set up a center to restart the flow of humanitarian aid to Palestinians, with supplies expected to begin flowing back into the Gaza on Saturday.

 

Cooper, along with US envoy Steve Witkoff visited an Israeli army post in the Strip Saturday morning to confirm IDF troops were withdrawing as part of the historic cease-fire deal with the terror group, Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported.

“CENTCOM has confirmed that the Israeli Defense Forces completed the first phase withdrawal to the yellow line at 12PM local time, said Witkoff on X. “The 72-hour period to release the hostages has begun.”

Witkoff and Cooper have since returned to Israel, with Witkoff set to speak at Tel Aviv’s Hostages’ Square Saturday night.

RT Russian has released images of documents said to belong to three foreign mercenaries killed in Ukraine’s Kharkov Region during fighting with Russian forces.They were identified as citizens of the US, Poland, and Colombia.

 

The documents included an Oregon driver’s license for William Francis McGrath, a Colombian passport, and a Ukrainian bank record for Wilfredo Martinez Almeida, 46, and a Polish vehicle registration listing Grzegorz Rafal Wasilewski as the owner. Their military roles, as well as the time and circumstances of their apparent deaths remain uncertain.

 

The deaths of the mercenaries was first reported by TASS on Friday, with a source saying their corpses were discovered in Otradnoye, Ukraine on the Russian border during a sweep of recently captured Ukrainian positions.

 

A TASS source also claimed that Ukraine’s command had to “fully commit units of the foreign legion from their permanent base in Kharkov” following the Russian advance. He added that there had been “confirmed facts of the elimination of foreign mercenaries across the entire northern section of the front.”

 

The same source said most foreign fighters in Ukraine “arrive from Latin America – mainly Colombia and Venezuela,” adding that they “are often housed separately, rarely appear on the line of contact, and are regularly destroyed because they are poorly instructed in safety and camouflage.”

 

Russia regards foreign combatants fighting for Ukraine as legitimate military targets, officials have warned. President Vladimir Putin has said that while foreign mercenaries fighting for Ukraine “do not fall under the protection of the Geneva Conventions,” Russia treats all prisoners of war humanely.

IDF says strikes in Lebanon destroyed hundreds of Hezbollah construction vehicles

The Israeli Air Force early Saturday morning bombed hundreds of heavy engineering vehicles it said were being used by Hezbollah to restore its infrastructure in southern Lebanon, in an attack that reportedly killed one and was condemned by the Lebanese president.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said the airstrikes hit Hezbollah sites where the terror group was storing heavy machinery to use “for rebuilding its terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon.”

The IDF also accused Hezbollah of operating in a manner that poses “a threat to Lebanese civilians and uses them as human shields,” while saying that the “location” of the heavy equipment and its operation by the Iran-backed terror group breached the ceasefire agreement reached last November.

 

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned Israel for the strikes.

“Once again, southern Lebanon has been the target of a heinous Israeli aggression against civilian installations — without justification or pretext,” Aoun said. “The seriousness of this latest attack lies in the fact that it comes after the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.”

Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on the al-Msayleh area left one person dead and seven others wounded. According to Lebanese media, the person who was killed was a Syrian national who was passing by in a van transporting fruits and vegetables.

 

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, more than 10 separate strikes were carried out, destroying some 300 vehicles, including bulldozers, excavators, and over 100 small Bobcat utility vehicles.

Earlier this week, an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon killed a Hezbollah operative who was operating an excavator, with the IDF saying that “the terrorist was struck while attempting to restore Hezbollah terror infrastructure.”

Separately, on Friday, the IDF announced that troops demolished a building in southern Lebanon’s Ayta ash-Shab where a cache of weapons belonging to the Hezbollah terror group was located.

 

The IDF said reservists of the 300th “Baram” Regional Brigade scanned the building before dawn on Friday, following intelligence information that it was being used by Hezbollah.

The soldiers seized the weapons being stored in the building before blowing it up, the army said.

 

Since the deal to end the fighting, which began after Hezbollah started attacking Israeli communities and military posts following its Palestinian ally Hamas’s October 2023 terror onslaught, Israel has targeted Hezbollah sites and operatives in near-daily strikes.

Under the November 27, 2024, ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, weapons in south Lebanon were to be held only by the state, and the IDF was permitted to act against imminent threats by the terror group.

Since the beginning of the ceasefire, the IDF says it has carried out over 500 airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, killing over 300 operatives and destroying dozens of sites belonging to the terror group, saying they violated the terms of the truce.

Hebrew-language Israeli media reports say there is a "secret clause" buried in the Gaza ceasefire agreement that would allow Israel to resume the war. Palestinians worry this is the pretext Netanyahu needs to get out of completing the deal.

 

The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas could collapse due to an alleged “secret clause” in the agreement that would allow Israel to resume the war, according to reports in the Arab and Hebrew-language Israeli media. That so-called clause would reportedly be “activated” in the event that Hamas is unable to locate all the Israeli captives within the 72-hour window allotted to the Palestinian resistance group during the first part of the deal’s implementation.

 

On Friday, Al Jazeera’s Palestine Bureau Chief Walid al-Omary pointed out on the network’s live broadcast that the second article of the deal concerning the release of Israeli captives included a phrase in the Hebrew version about an undisclosed annex. According to al-Omary, if Hamas fails to release all Israeli captives, dead and alive, a “secret clause in appendix B” would be “activated.”

 

Israel’s Kan TV was the first to report on the clause, which was subsequently covered by other Israeli media outlets. Although the alleged clause implies punitive consequences on Hamas in the event of failing to meet the 72-hour deadline, Hamas official Osama Hamdan said in an interview hours after the deal was first announced that the time needed to find, gather, and release Israeli captives would depend on “field conditions.” Hamdan added that locating the captives might take longer. U.S. President Donald Trump also admitted that finding the dead bodies of Israeli captives might take longer than anticipated.

 

Hamas has officially denied the existence of such a clause. A Hamas official told Al Jazeera that “the reported rumors concerning the presence of ‘secret clauses’ in the agreement to end the war on Gaza are completely untrue.”

 

The potential existence of such a secret clause has reinforced already-existing Palestinian concerns that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would seek to find a way to sabotage the deal. Already in March, Israel broke the first ceasefire after the release of all civilian Israeli captives in the first phase of the deal. Last July, Hamas accepted a proposed deal following talks through Egyptian and Qatari mediators, while Netanyahu completely ignored it as mediators waited for Israel’s response.

 

Moreover, the lack of any additional terms within the deal for the end of the war, known as Trump’s “20-Point Plan,” has contributed to the spread of such reports in Arab media outlets. Issues relating to disarmament, Gaza’s postwar administration, and Israel’s withdrawal have all been relegated until after the prisoner exchange.

 

Israeli media reported late on Thursday that talks ended over the names and numbers of Palestinian prisoners and detainees set to be released as part of the deal. Israel had reportedly vetoed the names of Fatah leader Marwan Barghouthi, and the secretary general of the PFLP Ahmad Saadat. Another Israeli veto was placed on the names of 14 out of the 303 Palestinians serving life sentences, because they are Palestinians who hold Israeli citizenship. The final lists of agreed-on names haven’t yet been made public.

 

Meanwhile, the Israeli army began its withdrawal from Gaza City and other parts of the Strip. The Israeli army would remain in control of 53% of the strip, excluding urban areas.

With daily drone incursions over bases, NORTHCOM takes aim through Falcon Peak

“We’re between [about] one and two incursions per day” at DoD installations, said NORTHCOM Commander Gen. Gregory Guillot. “I don't know if the problem's worse, or we have more systems out there that can detect them.”

Flying hundreds of feet in the air against a clear blue sky, the small drone barreled toward a defended position, its profile similar to other unmanned systems that have evaded authorities on US installations.

But this drone wouldn’t return to its sender: soon after its detection, defending personnel dispatched their own drone that smashed into the encroacher, sending both plummeting back to earth.

 

That’s life for a drone during Falcon Peak, a second-year exercise hosted by US Northern Command in late September to hone counter-drone prowess at domestic military facilities.

Despite concerted efforts by the US government to defeat unmanned threats, their incursions into US military installations are increasing, according to NORTHCOM head Gen. Gregory Guillot.

 

“We’re between [about] one and two incursions per day” at DoD installations, Guillot told reporters during a roundtable here.

A NORTHCOM spokesperson later told Breaking Defense there were 230 drone incursions reported over military installations between September 2023 and September 2024, which jumped by 82 percent to approximately 420 sightings reported over roughly the same period the following year.

Whatever the cause of the increase — and Guillot noted, “I don’t know if the problem’s worse, or we have more systems out there that can detect them” — that kind of major jump is bound to get a response from the Pentagon.

 

Drone incursions over domestic bases have been a top problem for officials following mysterious unmanned flights over Langley Air Force Base in Virginia in late 2023 and other high-profile sightings, prompting widespread scrutiny over why many installations seem powerless to stop them.

The issue, officials have said, is that typical counter-drone technologies are not safe to use in civilian airspace, a problem compounded by a byzantine set of rules for installation self-protection.

 

Hence the Falcon Peak effort, where the government has called up industry to offer its very best solutions that can detect, track and defeat small drones in ways that maintain the integrity of civilian airspace.

Similar to the first Falcon Peak, held last year at the foothills of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, this year’s event used testing ranges belonging to Eglin Air Force Base on the beaches of Santa Rosa Island in Florida.

 

“What we learned last year at Falcon Peak” between the DoD and industry is that “we’re pretty good at detecting UAS [unmanned aerial systems] of all types and sizes,” Guillot said.

“Our ability to track them once we’ve detected them, especially through maneuvers and altitude changes was okay, not great. And then our ability to defeat them was poor, especially if it was only in a non-kinetic means.”

The good news? Guillot then said that based on results from this year’s Falcon Peak, it’s clear there’s been significant improvement in all three areas.

 

Like last year, Guillot said his general observation is that most drone incursions on US military installations are probably just hobbyists who don’t know the rules.

Still, officials have said apprehended drone operators, like a Chinese national who flew a drone over Vandenberg Space Force Base late last year, pose national security threats too.

(Guillot said officials have yet to establish a link between drone overflights and a foreign government.)

“So majority, I think, are hobbyists that are in the wrong place at the wrong time. But there’s enough of the others that has me concerned,” he said.

 

Industry Brings Its Kit

Over the course of several days, NORTHCOM ran hundreds of incursion scenarios to test industry’s counter-drone mettle, with some culminating in “pretty complex” events that involved multiple drones, various flight profiles and even internal navigation technologies that don’t emit signals, according to NORTHCOM Deputy Test Director Jason Mayes.

“They were successful in some, not successful in others,” Mayes said on the Falcon Peak sidelines, adding that it would take time to fully analyze results.

More traditional kinetic weapons also pose a risk to bystanders, prompting the need for a solution that can take down a drone with minimal threat to others in the area.

 

The smashing intercept viewed by Breaking Defense was performed by Anduril’s Anvil drone, one element of a broader package of capabilities offered by the company that NORTHCOM selected to serve as the command’s first “flyaway kit.”

The kit, according to a NORTHCOM presentation shown to Falcon Peak attendees, includes the Anvil, a trailer-mobile radar and camera tower, an electronic warfare system called Pulsar, an infrared sensing system dubbed SkyFence and command and control (C2) software through the firm’s Lattice platform.

 

The Falcon Peak event “was an opportunity to continue the learning and the refinement of how we deliver that system, how we train the teams that are going to use it [and] how we provide them with the tools that they need to be able to operate that kit on their own,” Parks Hughes, Anduril’s senior director for air defense, told Breaking Defense at the AFA conference in September, days after Falcon Peak concluded. “It’s always valuable to test the system against a variety of threats.”

Other vendors, like Anduril, brought along comprehensive solutions. But some firms brought individual pieces of the puzzle to show off.

 

Norwegian firm Squarehead Technology, for example, brought along an acoustic sensor called Discovair. Acoustic detection has recently grown in popularity since many drones now no longer emit electronic signals, and can instead only be sensed by physically listening for features like rotors.

The Discovair device “allows you to sort of listen to everything at once, in all directions. And if it doesn’t sound like a drone we just throw it out,” Knut Torbjørn Moe, Squarehead’s vice president of defense, told Breaking Defense at the company’s Falcon Peak booth.

A key thing to get right is eliminating false positives, he said, noting that “it’s becoming clear to everybody” that technologies like acoustic detection are “needed to be able to fight back against” newer drone threats.

 

The small American company Thalrix was also present at Falcon Peak and brought along a camera system called Sentinel.

According to CEO Justin Luce, the low-cost camera rings in at about $20,000 for daytime operations and $30,000 for a version that can perform both day and night monitoring.

The system, roughly the size of a shoebox and weighing four pounds, can detect the smallest drones, also known as Group 1, about one and a half kilometers away.

 

“The main thing for us is, as we’ve seen the price of the effectors and the weapon systems come down, we haven’t seen the price of detection” similarly decline, Luce told Breaking Defense at the company’s Falcon Peak booth.

“So our goal has just been getting the cost of our systems down as low as possible, and then putting it out there, testing it and seeing how low can we get this price point.”

 

Similar to others, Thalrix has its own C2 system, but like in the spirit of Falcon Peak — where Guillot said a top goal was vendors being able to connect different systems together — Luce said the company advises integrating the Sentinel with other companies’ software.

“We recommend any of the existing C2s, as opposed to throwing our own in the ring,” he said. “Because there are already so many options. No need to add another one.”

 

Authority Challenges

Beyond technical limitations that prevent facilities from halting drone incursions, policy plays a big role both in determining who can respond to drone flights and how.

Some DoD installations like special operations and nuclear facilities are expressly permitted under US law to take measures to defend themselves against unmanned threats, but others are not. The issue is currently being sorted out on Capitol Hill, as lawmakers weigh a legislative proposal submitted by the Pentagon earlier this year [PDF] that would broaden the category of facilities that are permitted to defend against drones and enforce perimeter security, among other changes. (Thanks to a bipartisan amendment, the Senate’s version of the Pentagon’s annual defense policy bill that passed late Thursday includes changes sought by the department, though the provision will need to make it into a final version of the legislation and signed into law.)

Mayes said too that Pentagon officials are working to centralize and streamline relevant information on the topic, and that installation commanders have the ability to take out a drone that they deem as a threat to life or critical assets.

“So there’s definitely engagement criteria that have to be met. We can’t just shoot anything down just because it’s over our installation,” he said.

Engaging drones further requires coordination with the Department of Transportation, chiefly through the Federal Aviation Administration.

 

Heeding a call by Guillot, NORTHCOM was tapped last year to serve as a homeland DoD “synchronizer” for counter-drone authorities, meaning that the command leads all interagency coordination on the issue.

“It gives us a lot of ability to go out and drive standardizing responses where necessary,” Guillot said of the synchronizer role.

 

Falcon Peak’s focus on low-kinetic intercepts appears to be due in part to the regulations required for intercepting drones. Wary of shooting into a civilian-trafficked sky, some officials have talked about using tools like lasers to defeat drones, though Mayes said that more learning is needed.

“I think we’re moving forward, but it’s a very, very slow process,” Mayes said, pointing to potential collateral effects like a laser disrupting a satellite in low earth orbit. “I think there’s a pathway to get there, but where we’re at in that yet, I’m not really sure.”

 

Through its new counter-drone leadership, NORTHCOM is also responsible for deploying the Anduril-supplied flyaway kit where necessary.

Under a framework outlined by Guillot, if installations are having trouble repelling unmanned incursions, NORTHCOM can come to one’s aid by deploying the kit within 24 hours.

The command aims to field up to three kits — one each on the East and West Coasts and one in Alaska — that could come with different features provided by other vendors.

 

“I think 24 hours is fast. Obviously we’d like to be faster,” Guillot said.

According to Mayes, the flyaway kit currently comes with about a half dozen Anvil interceptors, which can carry other means of defeat like spoofing a signal.

(The Anvil that took down the target drone was also reused from a previous event, so some may be able to take out multiple targets depending on how they’re used.)

Estimating the kit’s cost at up to $12 million depending on configuration, Mayes described it as a stopgap measure to fill a need that the military services are ultimately responsible for satisfying.

“The systems aren’t cheap, so there is a budget aspect of that,” he said.

 

The 24 hour window is needed to not only deploy the kit, but also to provide adequate time to coordinate its use with the FAA.

Asked whether this approach was sufficient to stop a Spiderweb-type operation, where Ukrainian forces stunned the world by destroying Russian air assets deep behind front lines using armed drones launched from trucks, Guillot emphasized a surprise attack will ultimately fall to an installation to defend themselves first.

“One thing that we’re doing is we’re working with the services and the combatant commands to try to replicate that and use some of our existing systems to see if they’re sufficient for the type of thing that we saw over there,” he said.

“But not just to solve last month’s problem, but to think, how are they going to evolve and make sure that we stay ahead.”

Ukraine’s defenses can’t fully prevent Russian attacks on energy sites, Maryana Bezuglaya has said, warning of severe power outages

 

The Ukrainian military is incapable of fully blunting Russian strikes on Kiev’s energy infrastructure, making blackouts all but certain, a senior Ukrainian lawmaker has warned, urging citizens to consider temporarily moving out of the city in the coming months.

 

On Friday, Maryana Bezuglaya weighed in on the recent wave of devastating Russian strikes, which Ukrainian officials said caused massive power outages in Kiev.

 

“Regardless of the protection and air defense, Russia can destroy almost any critical infrastructure facility in Ukraine at will. The only question is the number of missiles and drones,”she said, adding that if a single power plant is hammered by dozens of strikes, it would almost certainly be crippled.

 

Bezuglaya reiterated her warning in late summer, when she said, “the winter would be difficult, and there would be blackouts.”

 

She urged Ukrainians to be realistic about the challenges ahead, stock up on essentials, and support each other during the crisis.

West behind latest coup attempt in Georgia – Tbilisi mayor

Commenting on protests following last week’s municipal elections, Kakha Kaladze has accused certain ambassadors of “inciting violence”

 

Foreign governments instigated a “coup”attempt in Georgia, the mayor Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, has claimed, referring to recent protests in the South Caucasus nation.

 

The Georgian government has repeatedly cried foul over alleged external interference in the nation’s internal affairs. It says the West has sought to depose the ruling Georgian Dream party, which has consistently refused to antagonize neighboring Russia over the Ukraine conflict.

 

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kaladze claimed that ahead of the municipal elections on October 4, “a campaign had been underway for months regarding a coup d’état,” backed by foreign actors.

 

According to the official, “hundreds of millions”were spent on the effort through non-governmental organizations, with certain Western ambassadors openly “inciting violence”in Georgia.

 

On Wednesday, US Senators Jim Risch and Jeanne Shaheen issued a statement accusing the Georgian authorities of persecuting the opposition and attempting to “silence dissent,”as well as of “making baseless allegations”against former US government employees.

 

Kaladze responded by describingthe US lawmakers as being “under the influence of the Global War Party.”

 

Speaking on national television on Monday, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze made similar claims, alleging that foreign powers had backed the opposition,whom he characterized as “foreign agents.”

 

Opposition protests, which quickly descended into clashes with police, erupted last weekend as municipal election result projections indicated that the ruling Georgian Dream party held a solid lead across the country.

 

The unrest was the latest in a series of similar demonstrations that have gripped Georgia in recent years. They reached a climax in October 2024, following presidential and parliamentary elections, when the opposition accused the authorities of fraud. Protesters had previously also cited a perceived stalling of the EU accession process by the Georgian government. Officials have dismissed all allegations.

 

The EU openly backed the demonstrators, who according to Kobakhidze, were “financed by foreign special services” in a manner similar to the 2014 Maidan coup in Ukraine.

Here are the agencies affected by shutdown layoffs

 

The White House on Friday announced it was moving forward with layoffs of federal employees, making good on its threats amid the government shutdown.

 

Multiple agencies have confirmed their staff have received notices about reductions in force (RIFs). In a Friday filing from the Department of Justice (DOJ), it stated that 4,100 federal employees had been laid off so far.

 

Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought announced layoffs would begin Friday, a day after the Senate failed to pass rival GOP and Democratic bills to end the shutdown.

 

Employees unions have vowed to challenge the firings in court, and Democrats and even some Republicans have criticized the move as one that turns federal workers into political pawns and threatens critical government services.

 

Here are the agencies The Hill knows are affected.

 

Department of Health and Human Services

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in a statement to The Hill that employees “across multiple divisions” had received notices about reductions in force “as a direct consequence of the Democrat-led shutdown.”

 

Between 1,100 and 1,200 employees were laid off on Friday, according to the DOJ filing.

 

“All HHS employees receiving reduction-in-force notices were designated non-essential by their respective divisions,” the department said. “HHS continues to close wasteful and duplicative entities, including those that are at odds with the Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again agenda.”

 

The HHS was among the agencies hardest hit by layoffs earlier in the year through the Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to slash the size of government.

 

Department of Homeland Security

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed employees working for the sprawling agency would be part of layoffs. As of Friday night, 176 DHS employees were let go, per the DOJ.

 

Specifically, many employees working in the Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), were set to be laid off.

 

“RIFs will be occurring at CISA. During the last administration CISA was focused on censorship, branding and electioneering,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement. “This is part of getting CISA back on mission.”

 

The Trump administration has long targeted CISA after its former leader, Christopher Krebs, refuted President Trump’s claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Trump fired Krebs in November 2020, and the administration earlier this year revoked Krebs’s security clearance.

Environmental Protection Agency

Employees in the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Sustainability Division received an email indicating the agency would be undertaking a RIF. Between 20 and 30 EPA employees were told that they may be affected by a RIF in the future.

 

“EPA has not made a final decision as to whether or when to issue RIF notices to some or all of those employees at some point going forward and is currently deliberating regarding those potential plans,” a DOJ filing read.

 

Asked about layoffs broadly, an EPA spokesperson told The Hill via email, “It’s unfortunate that Democrats have chosen to shut down the government and brought about this outcome. If they want to reopen the government, they can choose to do so at any time.”

 

Contingency plans posted online ahead of the shutdown showed roughly 89 percent of the EPA’s workforce was slated to be furloughed during the shutdown.

 

The EPA confirmed in June it was down more than 700 staffers since January, though those staffers may have separated from the agency for any number of reasons.

 

Department of Education

A spokesperson for the Department of Education confirmed to The Hill its employees “will be impacted by the RIF.”

 

Approximately 466 Department of Education employees were laid off on Friday, according to the DOJ.

 

The Education Department has already been targeted by the Trump administration for mass layoffs. President Trump earlier this year signed an executive order calling for the closure of the department, and roughly half of the agency’s workers were laid off in a move that sparked court challenges.

 

Department of Housing and Urban Development

An administration official confirmed HUD employees would also be affected by the reductions in force, though they did not specify how many employees or which specific offices.

 

Around 442 HUD employees were let go Friday, the legal filing stated.

Treasury Department

 

A Treasury Department spokesperson confirmed to The Hill that RIF notices were underway at the agency as of Friday afternoon, though they did not provide specifics about how many people were affected.

 

The DOJ stated that 1,446 employees were laid off on Friday.

 

Multiple reports indicated the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which has already seen staffing reductions this year, was impacted.

Germany: Several injured after shooting incident in Giessen

 

At least three people were injured Saturday after a person opened fire at a marketplace in a town in central Germany, according to local media reports.

 

The shooting reportedly took place at a sports betting shop at the market square in Giessen, located in the central state of Hesse.

 

The state public broadcaster later reported that the perpetrator was arrested after initially having reported that the assailant was on the run.

 

Hessenschau reported that the injured had been taken to the hospital and that they weren't in critical condition.

 

Police had temporarily cordoned off the market square following reports about the shooting, which took place around 3:10 p.m. local time (1310 GMT).

 

Police are still examining the situation and the motive remains unknown.

Starhawk (born Miriam Simos on June 17, 1951) is an American feminist and writer.[1] She is known as a theorist of feminist neopaganism and ecofeminism.[2] In 2013, she was listed in Watkins' Mind Body Spirit magazine as one of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People.[3]

Early life

She became active in the Neopagan community in the San Francisco Bay Area, and trained with Victor Anderson, founder of the Feri Tradition of witchcraft, and with Zsuzsanna Budapest, a feminist separatist involved in Dianic Wicca.

 

She wrote a book, The Spiral Dance, on Goddess religion, which she finished in 1977 but was unable to publish at first. Feminist religious scholar Carol P. Christ included an article on witchcraft and the Goddess movement in the anthology Womanspirit Rising (1979). Christ put Starhawk in touch with an editor at Harper & Row, who eventually published the book.

 

First published in 1979, The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of the Ancient Religion of the Great Goddess became a best-selling book about neopagan belief and practice. A 10th-anniversary edition was published in 1989, followed by a 20th-anniversary edition in 1999. The original text of The Spiral Dance was left largely intact for these editions, expanded primarily by introductions and commentaries reflecting on the book's origins, the rituals described, and the evolution of the author's beliefs and practices. Since its publication, The Spiral Dance has become a classic resource on Wicca and modern witchcraft, spiritual feminism, the Goddess movement, and ecofeminism. The work is distinguished by its visionary mysticism, "broad philosophy of harmony with nature," and ecstatic consciousness.

Beliefs

 

Starhawk believes that the Earth is a living entity, and that faith-based activism can reconnect oneself to basic human needs. She posits core religious values of community and self-sacrifice as important to eco-pagan movements, as well as the broader environmental justice movement.

 

She advocates combining social justice issues with a nature-based spirituality that begins with spending time in the natural world, saying that doing so "…can open up your understanding on deeper and more subtle levels where the natural world will speak to you."[5]

 

Starhawk's activism is deeply rooted in an anti-war philosophy, as she believes that war teaches one to see people culturally different than themselves as inhuman and dangerous.[6] She has written extensively on activism, including advice for activist organizers, examinations of white privilege within radical communities, and calls for an intersectionality of fighting oppression that includes spirituality, eco-consciousness, and sexual and gender liberation

NEW YORK (AP) — Cindy McCain, the widow of Sen. John McCain and head of the U.N. World Food Program, suffered a mild stroke this week and is said to be recovering “well,” according to a press release Thursday from the humanitarian organization.

 

The statement said McCain, 71, is expected to make a “full recovery” and will be traveling from Rome, where the WFP is based, to Arizona to focus on her recuperation. She will return to her post after her doctors have cleared her in four to six weeks.

 

“I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received,” said McCain. “My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care.”

 

“I personally met mothers and children who were starving in Gaza,” she said. “It is real and it is happening now,”

 

An advocate for children, McCain has served on the board of directors for Operation Smile, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing facial deformities for children around the world, visiting India, Morocco and Vietnam, the joint announcement said.

 

McCain succeeded David Beasley, a former South Carolina governor who had led WFP through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the global food crisis sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Beasley was at the helm when the World Food Program was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020, in part for being “a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

 

Carl Skau, the deputy executive director of WFP, is expected to oversee the organization’s day-to-day operations until McCain’s return.

 

In the statement Thursday, McCain said she has “full confidence” in her leadership team’s ability “to stay laser-focused on delivering urgently needed food assistance to the more than 100 million people WFP is working to serve across 87 countries.”

Chicago TV Station Employee Arrested for Allegedly Throwing Objects at Border Patrol Vehicle, Later Released Without Charges

 

An employee with Chicago TV station WGN, Debbie Brockman, was arrested by Border Patrol agents Friday morning for allegedly throwing objects at a Border Patrol vehicle. WGN reported the employee was released later on Friday without any charges filed against her, however Border Patrol in Chicago on Saturday appeared to indicate charges may be filed.

 

The arrest comes after a federal judge barred the federal government from using force against journalists covering ICE raids and protests in Chicago.

 

This compilation video posted by USA Today shows Brockman being detained and put into a Border Patrol vehicle. The video is edited to remove a Border Patrol agent warning a vehicle boxing them in to move before the agents took evasive action to escape by hitting the car blocking their path. State officials quarantined 153 unvaccinated children who attend two Spartanburg, South Carolina, schools after they were exposed to measles.

 

The South Carolina Department of Public Health said the quarantined students attended the public charter Global Academy of South Carolina and the public Fairforest Elementary School.

 

The students will remain in quarantine for three weeks, officials said.

So far, there is one case of measles among students at Global Academy of South Carolina, a K-8 school, and three cases at Fairforest Elementary, according to The Post and Courier in Charleston.

 

Infected people can spread measles before they start exhibiting symptoms, and are contagious for four days before developing the measles rash and for four days after it starts.

 

The initial symptoms of measles prior to the onset of rash include fever, coughing, a runny nose and red eyes. Once it starts, the measles rash lasts for about five to six days.

 

The measles outbreak in South Carolina’s Upstate region began on Sept. 25, with eight cases associated with it so far and 11 measles cases in South Carolina this year.

 

All 11 measles patients were unvaccinatedand did not have immunity from previous measles infections, health officials said. About 6% of Spartanburg County kids have a religious vaccine exemption, the highest rate in the state, according to The Post and Courier.

The eighth case in the ongoing outbreak was a child living in Greenville County, which borders Spartanburg County, said the South Carolina Department of Public Health.

 

South Carolina health officials are working to figure out whether the Greenville County patient interacted with anyone at the two Spartanburg schools, South Carolina state epidemiologist Linda Bell told the South Carolina Daily Gazette.

 

State health officials also urged residents to get the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

 

Receiving two doses of the MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing someone from getting measles and one dose is 93% effective, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 

The CDC also stressed that “there is no link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

Scientists in the United States and other countries have carefully studied the MMR vaccine. None has found a link between autism and the MMR vaccine.”

First impeachment by the House of Representatives on a phone call he had with Ukrainian President to look in to Joe Biden conducting quid pro quo there to get Ukraine to fire investigator that was looking in to Biden corruption. Trump was acquitted in the Senate.

 

March 24, 2019:

Mueller Report released after 22-month investigation into fake Russian hoax that was proven to be a government created attack on President Trump to bring his presidency down. No charges filed against Trump.

 

November 4, 2019:

E. Jean Carroll files sexual assault lawsuit after accusing Trump in the 1990s with no evidence or witnesses. Biased civil not criminal court in NYC found Trump liable, not on sexual assault claim, but instead a "defamation" claim made later on Carroll on words Trump said about her while she could not prove her assault case without evidence or witnesses. Appeal is underway.

 

January 13, 2021:

Second impeachment by the House for "incitement of insurrection" where no insurrection took place or was ever charged. Trump was then acquitted by Senate on February 13, 2021

 

September 21, 2022:

New York AG Letitia James files civil fraud lawsuit in biased NYC civil court alleging Trump inflated asset values for loans and insurance, seeking $250 million+ on a law that didn't exist before. Case under appeal and AG James just indicted for fraud by grand jury.

 

March 30, 2023:

Indicted in biased New York on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the hush-money case involving Stormy Daniels payment, where Stormy Daniels herself put in writing it never happened. Case is under appeal.

 

June 8, 2023:

Federal indictment on 37 felony counts (later expanded to 40) for mishandling classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and obstruction. Case dismissed July 15, 2024, by Judge Aileen Cannon.

 

August 1, 2023:

Federal indictment on four felony counts for efforts to overturn 2020 election results (January 6 case). Case overturned by Supreme Court July 1, 2024.

 

August 14, 2023:

Georgia state indictment on 13 felony counts (later reduced to 10) for racketeering and election interference in 2020 vote. DA Fani Willis disqualified March 2024 (overturned).

 

July 13, 2024:

Assassination attempt at rally in Butler, Pennsylvania; shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks fires AR-15, grazing Trump's head, killing fireman Corey Comperatore and injuring David Dutch and James Copenhaver . Trump survives, raises fist and shouts "fight fight fight" in defiance.

 

September 15, 2024:

Second assassination attempt at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida; Ryan Wesley Routh spotted with rifle in bushes. Secret Service fires, Routh flees but arrested; no injuries to Trump. Convicted September 23, 2025, faces life in prison.

 

November 5, 2024:

President Trump overcomes all legal battles by winning re-election as 47th President, leading to federal cases being dropped or paused under DOJ policy; state cases stalled or appealed.
