Well, found out some things today.

 

1: He renounced his citizenship to try and dodge charges related to this by taking him beyond US law… BUT THEN KEPT DRAWING HIS USMC RETIREMENT, MAKING HIM SUBJECT TO THE UCMJ, BECAUSE HE'S AN ABSOLUTE RETARD

 

2: the dumb POS only got about $60K to sell out his fellow Marines and naval aviators… That's over like 10 years…..

 

3: Australia approved his extradition, he's appealed but every indication I've seen says it's basically a forgone conclusion that it's going to be rejected and he's going to be sent back to be charged

 

4: He's being charged only with arms trafficing at the moment, but his actions fit… several other crimes better. It's likely he's being charged with weapons trafficking because it doesn't carry the death penalty, and Australia won't extradite him if he might face the death penalty… but as I understand it the charges can change or be added the second he's on US soil

California urges newborn hepatitis B shots in defiance of federal shift

 

Health officials for California and three other West Coast states on Friday said all infants should continue getting vaccinated against hepatitis B vaccine at birth - emphasizing that it is a longstanding and effective public health strategy - despite a decision by a federal vaccine advisory panel earlier that day to end the practice.

 

Since 1991, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that all infants get the vaccine, which protects against liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer caused by the hepatitis B virus. The CDC updated its guidance in 2005 to say all infants should get the shot before being discharged from the hospital, and again in 2018 to say all infants should get the shot within 24 hours of birth. This vaccination strategy is credited with helping reduce hepatitis B rates dramatically in children.

Fifty three years ago, in December of 1972, Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent about 75 hours on the Moon exploring the Taurus-Littrow valley, while colleague Ronald Evans orbited overhead. This snapshot from another world was taken by Cernan as he and Schmitt roamed the lunar valley's floor. The image shows Schmitt next to the lunar rover parked at the southeast rim of Shorty Crater. That location is near the spot where geologist Schmitt discovered orange lunar soil. The Apollo 17 crew returned with 110 kilograms of rock and soil samples, more than was returned from any of the other lunar landing sites. And for now, Cernan and Schmitt are the last to walk on the Moon.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a comprehensive reset of federal fuel economy standards, aiming to ease regulations on the auto industry to boost American manufacturing and reduce costs for consumers.

In Japan amid negotiations over U.S. exports like the Ford F-150 pick-up, which Japan reportedly considered buying as snow plows to appease Trump, he spotted Kei trucks zipping around narrow streets and described them as "very small, really cute, and beautiful."

 

Multiple models would be highly marketable and profitable in the U.S. including the $14,000 Toyota Hilus, the $2,000 Micro-EVs or the $4,000 Suzuki Alto.

Fully functional workhorses

 

Kei trucks are typically under 11 feet long, 4 1/2 feet wide and 6 1/2 feet tall, a size that lends itself to weaving through city traffic or parking in tight spots. The engines are also smaller. They are limited to 660 cc, which is significantly smaller compared to U.S. trucks' 5+ liters, producing around 40 to 65 horsepower.

 

Originating in Japan in the post-World War II era, "Kei" (short for keijidōsha, or "light vehicle") refers to a special class of vehicles designed for narrow urban streets, high fuel efficiency, and affordability. Despite their petite size, they are not toys or scale models; they are fully functional workhorses, often used for deliveries, farming, or small business logistics.

 

Many barriers have blocked the vehicle's prominence. They are not outright banned federally, but they occupy a legal gray area in which strict regulations make them challenging to import, register, and drive on public roads. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards require crash protection, lighting, and emissions compliance designed for larger vehicles. Kei trucks' small size means they fail side-impact and rollover tests without costly modifications.

 

State laws also prevented their success: even modified imports (over 25 years old via the "classic car" loophole) are often off-limits on public roads—restricted to farms or low-speed private use in places like California, or banned outright elsewhere due to speed limits (top 60 mph) and vulnerability next to semis.

Americans can no longer afford new cars

 

Automobile affordability has reached a crisis point due to a number of factors. The average cost of a new car sits at roughly $48,800 with monthly payments exceeding $760, which has left many American families struggling to afford transportation amid broader economic pressures.

 

Much of this unaffordability stems from persistent inflation that eroded purchasing power, with prices rising over 21% since early 2021. As wages lagged behind, public sentiment trends towards seeing vehicle purchases as a luxury rather than a necessity.

 

The Biden administration's $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan in 2021, which passed despite warnings from economists like Larry Summers, flooded the economy with stimulus, adding up to 4 percentage points to inflation and driving up costs across sectors including automobiles. Compounding the issue, Biden's stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards and electric vehicle mandates imposed burdensome regulations on automakers, forcing costly technological upgrades that pushed new car prices up by an estimated $1,000 per vehicle and contributed to a 25% overall surge in costs.

CAFE standards rolled back

 

Adding to Trump's affordability efforts in the automotive sector, on Wednesday, Trump announced a major rollback of Biden's CAFE standards, reducing the 2031 fleet-average target from ~50 mpg to ~34.5 mpg and cutting required annual efficiency gains from 2% to just 0.5%. Afghan watchdog concludes billions in weapons U.S. left behind form ‘core’ of Taliban military

 

The inspector general responsible for scrutinizing U.S. reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan has detailed the billions of dollars wasted by the U.S. government during the 20-year war in the country and concluded that the arsenal of U.S.-provided military weaponry that was left behind now forms the “core” of the Taliban’s own military machine.

 

A massive number of U.S.-made and U.S.-supplied weapons and military facilities were left behind in Afghanistan as a result of President Joe Biden’s troop withdrawal announcement in April 2021, which resulted in the dissolution of the Afghan military, a chaotic U.S. evacuation, and a Taliban takeover in August 2021.

 

The Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR) issued its “final forensic audit report” this week more than four years after the U.S. withdrawal and evacuation from the country, concluding that “these U.S. taxpayer-funded equipment, weapons, and facilities have formed the core of the Taliban security apparatus.” SIGAR said in its final report that it will close its doors at the end of January 2026 as a result of the National Defense Authorization Act for 2025.

 

The report said that the Pentagon has concluded that the U.S. left behind weaponry worth at least $7.1 billion — weapons now in the hands of the Taliban — and that the U.S. government also continued to send $3.47 billion in humanitarian and development assistance to Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover.

 

The U.S. invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, in response to the September 11 terror attacks a month earlier. The U.S. presence in Afghanistan continued under four presidents. Though many inspector general reports include a response from those connected to the findings, this one did not.

 

Acting SIGAR Gene Aloise said in a letter attached to the new report that “despite nearly $90 billion in U.S. appropriations for security-sector assistance, Afghan security forces ultimately collapsed quickly without a sustained U.S. military presence” and that the watchdog office’s work “highlights serious systemic issues with reconstruction and paints a picture of a two-decade long effort fraught with waste.”

 

“Over two decades, the United States invested billions of dollars and incurred thousands of casualties in a mission that promised to bring stability and democracy to Afghanistan, yet ultimately delivered neither,” the report said. “The rapid collapse of the Afghan government in August 2021 laid bare the fragility that had been concealed by years of confident assertions of progress. The gap between ambition and reality was vast, with deteriorating conditions continually stymying objectives that proved to be unrealistic.”

 

SIGAR said that it found that “despite 20 years and $90 billion of U.S. support, the U.S. and Afghan governments failed to create an independent and self-sustainable Afghan National Defense and Security Forces." The report found that “the ANDSF remained reliant on the U.S. military in part because the United States designed the ANDSF as a mirror image of U.S. forces, which required a high degree of professional military sophistication and leadership” – creating “long-term ANDSF dependencies” – and “the decision to withdraw all U.S. military personnel and dramatically reduce U.S. support to the ANDSF destroyed the morale of Afghan soldiers and police.”

 

The collapse of the Afghan forces and the Taliban takeover meant billions of dollars worth of U.S.-provided weapons were now in the hands of the Talibs.

 

U.S. left behind billions of dollars of military equipment and facilities now used by Taliban security forces

 

The report also laid out how the majority of the money the U.S. government spent on Afghan reconstruction went to Afghan security services. This meant $88.8 billion for security, $35.9 billion for development and governance, $16.3 billion for agency operations, and $7.1 billion for humanitarian assistance.

 

The report said that “Congress appropriated nearly $80.7 billion” to the Afghan Security Forces Fund (ASFF) “which comprised nearly 91 percent of all security-related reconstruction appropriations.” The ASFF was designed to provide the ANDSF with “equipment, supplies, services, training, and funding for salaries, as well as facility and infrastructure repair, renovation, and construction.”

 

The SIGAR report said that, from 2002 onward, the U.S. “obligated $31.2 billion on infrastructure, equipment, and transportation for the ANDSF” and that “of the $31.2 billion, the U.S. spent $19.7 billion to equip and transport the ANDSF.”

The report said this included the purchase of 96,000 ground vehicles, more than 51,000 general purpose or light tactical vehicles, nearly 24,000 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, close to 900 armored combat vehicles, more than 427,000 weapons, over 17,000 helmet-worn night vision devices, and a minimum of 162 aircraft.

 

SIGAR said that Pentagon records from late July 2021 – roughly two weeks before the Taliban seized Kabul – “indicated that the Afghan Air Force had 162 U.S.-provided aircraft in its inventory, of which 131 were usable.”

 

The report added that “the remaining $11.5 billion of the $31.2 billion spent by the U.S. was devoted to the construction of infrastructure for the ANDSF, including the construction of headquarters, training facilities, and bases or outposts around the country.”

 

“DoD determined that the United States left behind approximately $7.1 billion in material and equipment it had given to the ANDSF,” SIGAR stated. “Similarly, any remaining ANDSF facilities that were not destroyed, can be assumed to be under Taliban control.”

 

SIGAR also found that “approximately $57.6 million likely remained in Afghan government-controlled accounts when the Taliban took over in August 2021” and that “it is likely that the Taliban were able to access at least a portion of this money when they took over Afghanistan’s Ministry of Finance.”

 

U.S. inadvertently armed and equipped its former Taliban adversaries

 

A Pentagon spokesman said in October 2021 – just a couple of months after the Taliban takeover – that “since 2005, the U.S. military has provided the Afghan national defense and security forces with many thousands of small arms, ranging from pistols to medium machine guns” and that “we recognize that large numbers of these weapons are probably now in Taliban hands.”

 

The Defense Department inspector general also conducted an investigation into the U.S.-provided weapons that were left behind in Afghanistan and that are now mostly in the hands of the Taliban. The watchdog argued that “the U.S.-funded equipment now under the control of the Taliban had previously been property of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.”

 

The Pentagon inspector general revealed in 2022 that the U.S. military left $7.12 billion worth of U.S.-funded aircraft, vehicles, weapons, munitions, and other equipment in Afghan government inventories at the time of the Taliban takeover. This included Afghan military aircraft “valued at $923.3 million” – although the U.S. military stressed that “some” of these aircraft were “demilitarized and rendered inoperable” during the NEO – as well as aircraft weapons “valued at $294.6 million.” This also included Afghan ground vehicles “valued at $4.12 billion” – including tactical vehicles such as Humvees and Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs). The U.S. military had transferred 35 MRAPs to the Afghan Ministry of Defense in early 2021.

 

The Pentagon watchdog found that “Afghan forces had 316,260 weapons, worth $511.8 million, as well as ammunition and other equipment in their stocks when the former government fell.” This included rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and howitzers. The Taliban also got its hands on “specialty ground munitions (such as mortar rounds), communications equipment, explosive ordnance detection and disposal equipment, night vision devices, and other surveillance equipment.”

 

The Pentagon argued at the time that the U.S. military had removed or destroyed nearly all major equipment used by U.S. troops in Afghanistan throughout the drawdown period in 2021.

 

Former CENTCOM Commander Gen. Frank McKenzie wrote in his memoir that “the thousands of weapons ranging from M4 and M16 rifles to D-30 artillery pieces that were in the hands of the Afghan military … were all lost.” The general said the Taliban also likely gained control of “12,000 high-mobility multi-wheeled vehicles and 21,000 Ford Ranger trucks.” And the general wrote that “37 aircraft that weren’t at HKIA fell into Taliban hands at airbases like Kandahar.” All told, the general said that “our best estimate was that the equipment lost totaled about $18 billion.”

The Taliban claimed to have recovered 40 operational aircraft from the former Afghan government, including two Mi-17 helicopters, two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, two MD-530 light helicopters, two Mi-24 helicopter gunships, and one fixed-wing transport aircraft – all of which the Pentagon said have since been observed flying.

 

SIGAR later revealed that an unclassified Defense Intelligence Agency assessment from March 2022 stated that the Taliban claimed to have repaired seven former Afghan Air Force aircraft, with the DIA indicating that “the Taliban may have obtained a degree of operation and maintenance capability.”

 

The United Nations sanctions monitoring team said in July 2024 that the Taliban claimed it had 60 aircraft in service, an increase from 40 aircraft in 2023. The UN team said that “there have been at least three operations in which Taliban forces successfully used existing Mi-17 transport helicopters, Mi-24 attack helicopters, and MD-500 light attack helicopters.”

 

The Pentagon had also provided the Afghan forces with specialty ground munitions such as mortar rounds, communications equipment, explosive ordnance detection and disposal equipment, night vision devices, and other surveillance equipment – equipment in the hands of the Afghan military when it collapsed and the Taliban took over.

 

The Biden White House had previously downplayed the value of the equipment left behind.

 

Then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at the end of August 2021 that “our objective was not to leave them with any equipment, but that is not always an option when you are looking to retrograde and move out of a war zone.”

 

Then-Pentagon press secretary John Kirby insisted in November 2021: “We were nothing but clear from the very beginning that we fully expected that property and equipment that we had turned over to the Afghans – it was Afghan national security force equipment, and vehicles, their equipment and vehicles – we were completely transparent about the idea that some of those would probably find their way into Taliban hands, and they have,”

 

Kirby said the only thing left operable at Kabul airport when the U.S. left at the end of August 2021 was “some airport vehicles like a fire truck, I think a forklift, one of those stair trucks, and some firefighting equipment.”

 

Latifullah Hakimi, head of the Taliban’s Ranks Clearance Commission, claimed in 2022 that during their takeover of Afghanistan the Taliban had seized over 300,000 small arms, 26,000 heavy weapons, and roughly 61,000 military vehicles.

 

The Taliban claimed in 2022 that it was working to professionalize its security forces, and the Taliban Ministry of Defense announced that recruitment for 130,000 troops for its new national army had been completed.

 

Taliban defense spokesman Enayatullah Kharazami said in August 2022 that the Taliban had the ability to increase its military size to 200,000 soldiers if it wanted to, and further recruitment was underway.

 

The Taliban claimed in March 2024 that it was now in charge of a combined military and police force of over 384,000 forces in Afghanistan. SIGAR said at the time that the State Department couldn’t verify those numbers and that the Pentagon doesn’t track that data.

The new SIGAR report stated that, from 2002 through mid-2021, the U.S. government “appropriated approximately $144.7 billion for Afghanistan reconstruction” and that, since its creation in 2009, SIGAR “identified 1,327 instances of waste, fraud, and abuse totaling between $26.0 billion and $29.2 billion.”

 

The watchdog report said the U.S. government provided more than $144.7 billion for the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the twenty-year war, and that “an additional $763 billion was spent on warfighting.”

 

“Billions of dollars spent to develop and equip the Afghanistan National Defense and Security Forces, as well as billions of dollars spent to construct civilian infrastructure were lost when the United States withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021,” SIGAR concluded. “Together, the U.S. obligated at least $38.6 billion equipping and building infrastructure for the ANDSF and constructing civil infrastructure for the benefit of the Afghan people.”

 

U.S. continued sending billions to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan

 

The SIGAR report also made it clear that the U.S. continued sending billions of dollars to Afghanistan after August 2021, even though it was now controlled by the Taliban.

 

“Despite Afghanistan falling to the Taliban in 2021, the United States continued to be the nation’s largest donor, having disbursed more than $3.83 billion in humanitarian and development assistance there since,” the report said. The money continued to flow even through the first quarter of 2025, with disbursements of $120 million.

 

The watchdog said that “following a review of U.S.-funded foreign assistance programs in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, the United States terminated all foreign assistance awards in Afghanistan.”

 

The report said that, during the Biden administration, the UN also continued sending “shipments of U.S. currency to Afghanistan” which had “stabilized the Afghan economy” but also “benefited the Taliban.”

 

“SIGAR reported on U.S. funds used to pay taxes to the Taliban-controlled government of Afghanistan,” the new report concluded. “SIGAR found that since the fall of the Afghan government in August 2021, at least $10.9 million in U.S. funds were used to pay taxes to the Taliban-controlled government on the $2.8 billion in humanitarian and development assistance delivered to help the people of Afghanistan. While the United States government made exceptions for such types of payments, U.S. agencies inconsistently required its implementing partners to report on taxes paid to the Taliban.”

 

The “No Tax Dollars For Terrorists Act” — which requires the State Department to “develop and implement a strategy to discourage foreign countries and nongovernmental organizations from providing financial or material support to the Taliban” — passed the House in June and is awaiting action in the Senate.

End of November Images of 3I/ATLAS

The rotational gradient map of the new Hubble image of the interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS, taken on November 30 with a remarkable angular resolution of 0.04 arcseconds per pixel, shows evidence for two jets, with a clear anti-tail extending out to more than 60,000 kilometers (ten times the Earth’s radius) in the direction of the Sun.

The previous Hubble image, taken when 3I/ATLAS was approaching the Sun on July 21, 2025 (as reported here), showed a sunward anti-tail as well.

 

During perihelion, the anti-tail apparently reversed direction relative to the steady motion of 3I/ATLAS. It appears to always point toward the Sun, irrespective of the direction of motion.

This phenomenon is not normal in familiar comets and needs to be explained. As I often say: the foundation of science is the humility to learn, not the arrogance of expertise.

 

And speaking about science of the people, amateur astronomers continue to supply large-scale images of 3I/ATLAS with evidence for multiple jets extending out to millions of kilometers.

Here on planet Earth, there is some good news. As of this morning, YouTube took down the fake AI videos on 3I/ATLAS. All it took was a brief addendum to my latest Medium.com post here.

A smooth, spherical glow extends outward nearly 40,000 kilometers in all directions, yet from this perfect shell emerges a narrow, elongated extension pointing directly toward the Sun.

That single detail, hiding in plain sight, is the anomaly that changes everything.

 

In the language of comet science, this feature is called an anti-tail—a tail that extends toward the Sun rather than away from it. In the laws of physics, that feature should not exist. And yet here it is, sharper and more defined than ever.

The significance of this becomes clearer when we compare it to natural behavior. Comets shed volatile ices that vaporize under solar heating, producing a dust tail that curves gently backward and an ion tail that stretches straight outward, pushed by the solar wind.

Every motion, every plume, every brightening is chaotic. Nothing remains stable. Nothing remains predictable. And nothing, under any standard comet model, organizes into a clean, sunward line of debris tens of thousands of kilometers long.

Yet this is exactly what the new Hubble image shows: a 60,000-kilometer sunward extension, narrow, and coherent.

 

To understand why this matters, it helps to look at the work of Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, who has been studying 3I/ATLAS with growing scientific interest.

Loeb suggests that the teardrop-shaped halo is not made of dust or gas at all. Instead, he argues it is composed of macroscopic non-volatile fragments—solid objects, not dust grains—that were separated from the main body during perihelion by the object’s measured non-gravitational acceleration away from the Sun.

In plain English, the object sped up in a way that cannot be explained by solar radiation alone, and in the process, it shed solid pieces that remained clustered in a predictable formation.

When a behavior repeats, it becomes evidence. And when evidence repeats across independent platforms—ESA’s Juice spacecraft, Hubble’s pre-perihelion and post-perihelion images, ground-based amateur telescopes—the anomaly is no longer incidental. It is structural.

 

The timing is crucial because December 19, 2025 marks the close approach of 3I/ATLAS to Earth. That moment will give astronomers their best chance yet to capture high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy before the object moves outward into the colder reaches of the solar system.

What we expect to learn on that date is not just the color or shape of the coma, but whether this sunward debris field continues to behave in a coherent pattern as the object cools. Will the anti-tail elongate, or dissipate?

Will the nucleus brighten, dim, or rotate? Will the swarm of macroscopic fragments appear more clearly under changing illumination? And most fundamentally, will 3I/ATLAS continue to follow the non-gravitational acceleration profile already measured?

 

These answers matter because 3I/ATLAS is teaching us, in real time, that interstellar objects do not have to resemble the comets and asteroids we know.

They can carry materials we have not yet cataloged. They can react to sunlight in unfamiliar ways. They can shed debris that does not behave like dust. And they can move according to forces our models are only beginning to describe.

Hubble’s newest image confirms that the anomaly was never subtle. It was always there, hiding in plain sight. Now, with December 19 approaching, the world has an opportunity not only to observe it but to understand it.

Crew Swaps Commanders on Sunday as Trio Packs for Departure

December 5, 2025

 

Expedition 73 will swap commanders this weekend before three crew members return to Earth on Monday.

Expedition 74 officially begins once the home bound trio undocks from the Rassvet module inside the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft the following day.

 

Veteran Roscosmos cosmonaut and station Commander Sergey Ryzhikov will hand over a symbolic key representing command of the orbital outpost to four-time space flyer NASA astronaut Mike Fincke at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday, Dec. 7.

Fincke will formally take responsibility of station operations and lead the new Expedition 74 crew at the moment Ryzhikov and Flight Engineers Alexey Zubritsky of Roscosmos and Jonny Kim of NASA back away from the orbital outpost inside their Soyuz at 8:41 p.m. on Monday.

Ryzhikov and Zubritsky spent Friday packing cargo and personal items inside the Soyuz MS-27 and making final preparations for their Monday night departure with Kim.

 

The trio aboard the Soyuz descent module will parachute to landing in Kazakhstan less than three-and-a-half hours later at 12:04 a.m. on Tuesday completing an eight-month space research journey orbiting over 250 miles above Earth.

NASA’s live coverage of the crew’s return will be broadcast on NASA+, Amazon Prime, and the agency’s YouTube channel beginning at 4:45 p.m. on Monday with farewell and hatch closure.

 

NASA Flight Engineer Chris Williams, who arrived at the station with Flight Engineers Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev on Nov. 27, has stepped into his new role as a first-time station astronaut and assisted Kim inside the Quest airlock on Friday installing lights, cameras, and straps on a pair of spacesuit helmets.

Williams then wore electrodes around his eyes as computerized medical gear operated by NASA Flight Engineer Zena Cardman sent light signals to test his retinal response in microgravity.

 

Kim also cleaned his crew quarters and took airflow measurements as he prepares to end his stay in space.

Cardman later checked out wireless high-definition camera hardware to be used inside the station when photographing future spacewalks.

 

Flight Engineers Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev took turns measuring their blood pressure then getting up to speed with life on orbit during the first half of Friday.

Next, Kud-Sverchkov and Mikaev collected a variety of station microbial and personal biological samples for stowage and analysis as part of ongoing research to keep crews healthy in space.

 

Flight Engineer Kimiya Yui of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency uninstalled the NanoRacks CubeSat deployer after it deployed several tiny satellites into Earth orbit for government, educational, and commercial research.

Fincke spent his shift replacing orbital plumbing components and inspecting fire extinguishers and breathing masks.

Roscosmos Flight Engineer Oleg Platonov completed the end of the week transferring fluids into a Progress cargo craft then assisted Kud-Sverchkov processing microbe samples swabbed from surfaces in the station’s Roscosmos segment.

Two NASA Scientific Balloon Launches Planned From Antarctica

December 5, 2025

 

NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program is back in Antarctica for another long-duration scientific balloon campaign, with two launches planned from the icy surface.

Launch operations will begin early December from the agency’s facility located near the U.S. National Science Foundation’s McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf.

 

To follow the missions, visit NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility website for real-time updates of balloons’ altitudes and locations during flight.

The program is supporting two missions this year: the Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations (PUEO) and the General AntiParticle Spectrometer (GAPS).

 

NASA’s PUEO will be the first balloon mission to launch through the agency’s Astrophysics Pioneers program, which supports compelling astrophysics science at a lower cost.

The PUEO payload is designed to detect signals from neutrinos, high-energy particles that travel across the universe undisturbed, carrying information about events billions of light-years away.

The mission will search for radio signals created when these neutrinos from space hit ice. This will be the most sensitive survey of cosmic ultra-high energy neutrinos ever conducted, offering valuable clues about the highest-energy astrophysical processes, from the creation of black holes to neutron star mergers.

 

“I’m excited to see our first Astrophysics Pioneer mission on the launch pad, with more to come very soon,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director, Astrophysics Division, NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“The PUEO mission is essentially like using the Antarctic ice as one big telescope, to detect signals from high-energy events that will help us better understand how our universe works.

It’s a great example of the important science we can undertake at a lower cost when we do things differently and embrace innovation, as well as the opportunities the program creates for early- and mid-career researchers.

 

The GAPS experiment is designed to help reveal the origin of dark matter – an invisible form of matter that makes up more than 80% of the total matter in the universe, yet little is known about its true nature.

The GAPS mission is optimized to detect certain anti-matter particles that are only produced when dark matter decays. A single detection of one of those particles could have a tremendous impact on our understanding of how the universe works.

 

Zero-pressure balloons, used in this campaign, are in equilibrium with their surroundings as they fly.

They maintain a zero-pressure differential with ducts that allow gas to escape to prevent an increase in pressure from inside the balloons as they rise above Earth’s surface.

This zero-pressure design, polar orbit, and constant sunlight makes the balloons very robust and well-suited for extended duration flights, such as those in this campaign.

 

NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia manages the agency’s scientific balloon flight program.

Peraton, which operates NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas, provides mission planning, engineering services, and field operations for NASA’s Scientific Balloon Program.

NASA’s balloons are fabricated by Aerostar. The NASA Scientific Balloon Program is funded by the Science Mission Directorate’s Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Later this decade, the Artemis program will send people to the Moon for the first time in 50 years. In "Moonrise on the ISS," meet some of the potential candidates of Artemis before they were candidates.

The documentary follows seven astronauts as they live on the International Space Station (ISS), an outpost of humanity in space. Astronauts conduct science experiments, use themselves as guinea pigs for medical research, and test life-support systems—effectively making the ISS a proving ground for travel to the Moon and beyond.

 

However, much has changed since the Apollo program. In "Moonrise on the ISS," Anne McClain dreams of becoming the first woman on the Moon and reflects on the historical women of spaceflight that have made her opportunities possible.

The documentary also features Victor Glover, a candidate for the first person of color on the Moon, as well as Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques.

Scientists capture 51 images showing exoplanets coming together around other stars: 'This data set is an astronomical treasure'

Astronomers have unveiled a stunning new gallery of dusty rings encircling young stars, revealing the intricate architecture of developing planetary systems.

Using observations from the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope, astronomers documented 51 budding exoplanetary systems after studying 161 nearby stars, offering an unprecedented glimpse at debris disks around stars beyond our solar system.

These debris disks are formed by collisions between asteroids or comets that generate large amounts of dust and resemble our own solar system where asteroids collect in the inner belt and comets populate the distant Kuiper Belt, according to a statement.

 

"This data set is an astronomical treasure," Gaël Chauvin, co-author of the study and SPHERE project scientist, said in the statement.

"It provides exceptional insights into the properties of debris disks, and allows for deductions of smaller bodies like asteroids and comets in these systems, which are impossible to observe directly."

 

Scientists study debris disks because they offer a snapshot of what young solar systems look like after planets begin to form.

Young stars form within collapsing clouds of gas and dust, which flatten into broad protoplanetary disks where material gradually clumps into larger bodies.

As these systems mature, collisions between leftover asteroids and comets produce fine dust creating the debris disks we see today.

By examining how this dust reflects starlight, astronomers can piece together how planets grow and how systems like our own take shape over time.

 

However, debris disks fade as collisions become less frequent and dust is gradually removed — either because it's blown out by stellar radiation, swept up by planets or remaining planetesimals or has fallen into the central star.

Our solar system is an example of the end state of this process, with just the asteroid belt, the Kuiper Belt and faint zodiacal dust remaining.

 

Using advanced instruments like SPHERE allows astronomers to study the dust in younger systems — roughly the first 50 million years — that can still be detected.

Most importantly, SPHERE blocks starlight using a coronagraph, a small disk that physically masks the star to reveal faint surrounding objects.

The telescope's adaptive optics system corrects for atmospheric distortions in real time, and optional polarization filters enhance sensitivity to light reflected by dust, making debris disks easier to detect.

 

The new survey reveals remarkable variety, from narrow rings to wide diffuse belts, lopsided disks and disks viewed both edge-on and face-on.

In fact, four of the disks were imaged in this detail for the first time, the researchers said.

 

Striking views of HD 197481 and HD 39060 capture sharp streams of material darting out from either side of its central star (representing an edge-on view), while incredible views of systems like HD 109573 and 181327 capture a nearly perfect circular debris ring (representing a face-on view).

In many systems, dust congregates in sharply defined rings, hinting at unseen planets shaping the debris, much like Neptune molds the Kuiper Belt in our solar system.

 

On the other hand, the dust distribution in younger systems like HD 145560 and HD 156623 is more chaotic and billowy, where less defined structures suggest material hasn't yet been fully sculpted by planets or cleared by collisions.

Comparing the different structures within the disks revealed clear trends, like more massive stars tend to host more massive disks, and disks with material concentrated farther from the star also generally contain more mass, according to the statement.

 

"All of these belt structures appear to be associated with the presence of planets, specifically of giant planets, clearing their neighborhoods of smaller bodies," researchers said in the statement.

"In some of the SPHERE images, features like sharp inner edges or disk asymmetries give tantalizing hints of as-yet unobserved planets."

While some giant exoplanets have already been detected in these systems, the SPHERE survey offers a guide post for new targets to be studied in greater detail by instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope and ESO's Extremely Large Telescope, which could reveal the exoplanets responsible for sculpting these spectacular disks.
