US used drone-launched missiles in strikes, Nigeria says

Nigeria’s information minister said Friday that the US strikes in northwest Nigeria conducted on Christmas Day used guided missiles launched from drones.

The United States announced its strikes on unspecified militants linked to Islamic State group Thursday, though information on who specifically was targeted — and the extent of each country’s involvement — remains unclear.

Nigeria is battling numerous armed conflicts, including a jihadist insurgency running since 2009, and its failure to rein in the violence has been criticised by Washington.

“A total of 16 GPS-guided precision munitions were deployed using MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial platforms, successfully neutralising the targeted ISIS elements attempting to penetrate Nigeria from the Sahel corridor,” Information Minister Mohammed Idris said in a statement, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

US President Donald Trump was the first to announce the strikes, raising concern among Nigerians that their sovereignty may have come under attack.

Idris said the attack was carried out with the “full involvement of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” with “explicit approval” from President Bola Tinubu.

Information has been slow to trickle out of the countryside in northwestern Sokoto state and neighbouring Kwara state, which the Nigerian government said late Friday was hit in the strikes.

Details in official communications between Nigeria and the United States have at times differed, possibly due to Washington apparently backing out of issuing a joint statement with Abuja, according to Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar.

“The strikes were launched from maritime platforms domiciled in the Gulf of Guinea, after extensive intelligence gathering, operational planning, and reconnaissance,” Idris added, in comments that seemed to match a video released by Washington of projectiles being launched by a navy ship bearing an American flag.

“Debris from expended munitions fell in Jabo, Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State, and in Offa, Kwara State,” Idris said, adding that no civilians were injured.

Drone strike kills 17 in West Darfur capital

(EL GENEINA) – At least 17 people were killed, and several others were injured on Friday in drone strikes that targeted at least two locations in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, local officials and residents said.

The city has been under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since November 2023.

The group has faced widespread accusations of war crimes and ethnic cleansing targeting the Masalit community in the region. El Geneina, which borders Chad, has been hit repeatedly by Sudanese army airstrikes.

The RSF-affiliated civil administration in West Darfur said in a statement that at least 17 people died in strikes launched by army drones.

According to the statement, the first strike hit a water station in the Ardamata area, killing seven people, including women and children. The administration described the incident as a “direct attack on a vital service facility relied upon by thousands of civilians.”

A second strike hit a civilian vehicle in the Kirik area that was transporting a patient and her companions to El Geneina hospital. Ten people, all members of the same family, were killed in that attack, the statement said.

The civil administration condemned the targeting of unarmed civilians and infrastructure, rejecting the justification of strikes against what are termed “social incubators” or support bases.

The statement called the strikes a violation of international humanitarian law and urged international rights organizations to document the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said today that, given the environment in which it finds itself, the possibility of an attack on the territory of Serbia and the Serbian people cannot be ruled out, and that it is therefore necessary to continue to arm heavily in order to make the army as strong as possible.

“They did not form military alliances without reason – unnatural, unprincipled and rude – they formed them for Serbia.

China revises law to regulate drones, tighten safety rules

China passed a revised law that for the first time formally regulates uncrewed aircraft, a move set to reshape the country’s fast-growing drone and low-altitude economy sectors, state media said yesterday.

The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress approved the changes to the Civil Aviation Law, adding a provision on airworthiness certification for drones that plugs a key regulatory gap.

The overhaul comes as China’s low-altitude economy — a national strategic initiative focusing on commercial activities below 3,000m — is forecast to grow to more than 2 trillion yuan (US$285 billion) by 2030, from 1.5 trillion yuan this year, according to estimates from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University and China’s Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC).

Under the new rules, effective on July 1 next year, all entities involved in the design, production, import, maintenance and operation of drones must obtain airworthiness certification.

Drone manufacturers would also be required to assign a unique product identification code to each unit.

China has implemented “interim regulations” for uncrewed aircraft starting last year, which stipulate that civil uncrewed aircraft must be registered under real names.

The regulations also specify that micro, light and small civil uncrewed aircraft do not require airworthiness certification, while medium and large ones must apply for airworthiness certification.

As China’s drone market has rapidly expanded, oversight has lagged. Over the past few years, several cities have reported flight delays caused by illegal drone operations, prompting fines and other penalties.

The tighter requirements would affect manufacturers such as DJI, the world’s largest consumer drone maker, and EHang, which produces passenger drones.

Drone logistics have become an important driver of China’s low-altitude economy, with 2.7 million packages containing everything from hamburger lunches to life-saving medicine delivered throughout last year, official data showed.

Drones disrupt flights at Germany's Hanover airport

The airspace above the northern German city of Hanover was closed to air traffic after unidentified drones were spotted in the area, an airport spokesman said on Saturday.

The closure on Friday evening lasted from 9:47 pm (2047 GMT) to 12:16 am, necessitating the diversion of seven aircraft to Paderborn, Bremen, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and other destinations.

Two flights also did not land in Hanover due to the security measures and were therefore unable to depart on Saturday.

These were connections to Frankfurt and Paris, which had to be cancelled, reports said. No official details about the drone sighting were initially available.

According to a news report in the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, a drone was first spotted near a model aerodrome in the vicinity at an altitude of around 80 metres.

An hour later, according to the report, at least two drones approached the actual airport. In November, Hanover Airport was closed for 45 minutes due to a drone sighting.

Rogue drone incursions have disrupted services at several German airports in recent months. Suspicions have fallen on Russia but no evidence of this has been provided.

Earlier in December, the head of the Federal Criminal Police Office, Holger Münch, said that more than 1,000 suspicious drone flights had been recorded in Germany so far this year.

The incidents most frequently involved military facilities and airports, but also other critical infrastructure such as defence companies and port facilities.

Asked whether the drone flights could be attributed to Russian actors, Münch said this could not be determined with certainty, citing the difficulty of identifying and questioning drone operators.

Chinese National Sentenced to Prison for Trafficking Reptiles

A federal judge in Buffalo, New York, yesterday sentenced Wei Qiang Lin, of Brooklyn, New York, to two years in prison for falsely labeling live turtles, snakes, and lizards as toys prior to exporting them in delivery boxes destined to Hong Kong.

Lin was also fined $2,339, which is how much U.S. currency he had on him when he was arrested.

According to court filings, between August 2023 and November 2024, Lin exported to Hong Kong approximately 222 parcels containing around 850 turtles, but he labeled the boxes as containing “plastic animal toys,” among other things, in violation of the Lacey Act. The approximate market value of the turtles was $1.4 million. Law enforcement intercepted the turtles during customs inspections and observed them bound and taped inside knotted socks within the shipping boxes.

Lin also attempted to export protected Abronia lizards and venomous green tree vipers and palm pit vipers.

The wildlife is protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers also intercepted packages shipped by Lin that contained rare Cora mud turtles.

The Buffalo Zoo used the seized turtles to set up the first-ever assurance colony for the species, which can be used to repopulate them if the wild population becomes unsustainable.

Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD), U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo for the Western District of New York, and Assistant Director Doug Ault, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement announced the sentence.

Lin was investigated and charged as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Operation Terrapene, which is an ongoing operation coordinated with other federal and local law enforcement agencies to detect turtle smugglers and dismantle highly-organized syndicates.

Federal agencies include Customs and Border Protection, Postal Inspections Service, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Trial Attorney Rachel Roberts and Senior Trial Attorney Ryan Connors of ENRD’s Environmental Crimes Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron J. Mango for the Western District of New York prosecuted the case.

If “Stranger Things” feels less like pure science fiction and more like a greatest-hits album of government bad decisions, that’s because, in part, it is. Unlike a Demogorgon, the show didn’t jump onto our screens fully formed from the Upside Down.

It crept out of the Pentagon’s file cabinet containing documented instances of Cold War paranoia, secret line items, questionable ethics, and experiments that really should have involved more oversight and fewer psychedelics.

Among others, “Stranger Things” most prominently draws from Project MKUltra and the unconfirmed Montauk Project, combining documented history with conspiracy-laden folklore to create something that feels both otherworldly and uncomfortably plausible.

What actually happened?

Project MKUltra was a CIA program launched in the early 1950s to explore mind control.

The agency was concerned that foreign adversaries had or would master psychological manipulation, so it did what any rational institution would do under pressure: secretly drug people without their consent to see if they could recreate the phenomenon.

As Matt Duffer, one of the brothers at the helm of the show, told Vulture, “Stranger Things” came about because “… we were talking about some of the mysterious government experiments that we felt were happening at the tail end of the Cold War, right when rumored [projects] like MKUltra were ramping down.”

Over two decades, MKUltra experimented with hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, psychological abuse, and liberal doses of LSD administered to everyone from soldiers to prisoners, psychiatric patients, and civilians.

The experiment is echoed in “Stranger Things,” manifested in a sterile, white-padded-cell school for supersensory, unnamed but rather numbered children.

Our show’s heroine, “Eleven,” is one such hostage child whose skills are tested daily across an eerie rainbow playroom, a deprivation tank that simulates an utter void, and dim rooms where the kids inflict psychokinetic torture upon each other.

These are straight out of MKUltra’s playbook.

The leader of the experiment in the show, known to the children only as “Papa,” believed that trauma could unlock extraordinary abilities. This interest in mind control was the prevailing logic driving the real-life program.

The children in “Stranger Things” may have developed psychic powers, but MKUltra’s real-world legacy is far less “successful”: resulting only in broken lives, erased records, and a U.S. government insistent it had learned its lesson.

Then there’s the Montauk Project, which is where history ends, and the rabbit hole (or Upside Down) opens.

The Duffer brothers had early designs on calling the show “Montauk” and setting it not in Hawkins, Indiana, but on Long Island, New York.

The Montauk Project refers to a conspiracy theory about secret experiments conducted at Camp Hero, a now-defunct Air Force base on the eastern tip of Long Island.

Unofficially, and according to the most ardent conspiracy theorists, self-proclaimed whistleblowers, and more recently, internet lore and speculation, the Montauk Project was a much more clandestine continuation of MKUltra under a new name.

Mind control was only the beginning. Psychic amplification, time manipulation, teleportation, and interdimensional travel were also part of the mission.

But Camp Hero owes this reputation less to something historical and more to a 1992 conspiracy book with a rather academic-sounding title: “The Montauk Project: Experiments in Time,” by Preston B. Nichols and Peter Moon.

The book didn’t just add legitimacy to local lore—it seemingly confirmed what people in and around Montauk already felt in their bones. The shuttered military base, it suggested, wasn’t just a Cold War relic quietly rusting by the sea.

It was the alleged epicenter of one of the U.S. government’s most secretive and morally questionable research efforts.

On Montauk, a local guide for the area, reports that rumors abound that at Camp Hero, “…extra-terrestrials assisted the CIA with mind control and inter-dimensional travel that opened portals to other dimensions and let in beings from beyond that still roam the site.

It is reported the aliens lived in the camp’s underground bunkers. Most disturbing are reports that children were used in the mind control experiments.”

Crucially for “Stranger Things,” the Montauk Project mythology centers on children as test subjects, echoing MKUltra’s unethical experimentation while dialing the horror up several notches.

These stories claim children were abducted, conditioned, and used to manifest physical beings through psychic projection—a concept that maps neatly onto the villainous creatures Vecna conjures in the Upside Down.

The infamous “Montauk Monster,” an alleged creature said to have escaped the base, feels like a beta test for Hawkins’ Demogorgons, Vecna, and the Mindflayer.

Whether it was a hoax, a raccoon, or proof that no one had a containment plan depends on how deep into the forums you’re willing to go.

What makes “Stranger Things” so compelling is how it stitches these two threads together. MKUltra provides credibility—proof that the U.S. government really did experiment on minds, harm people, and attempt to cover it up.

But the Montauk Project provides legend—the idea that those experiments didn’t stop, they just evolved into something stranger, darker, and harder to explain, and ultimately, more covert than ever before.

Belief in the Montauk Project conspiracy isn’t required to understand why it resonates. After MKUltra, the idea that there are secrets U.S. citizens will never fully uncover doesn’t feel paranoid; it feels realistic.

“Stranger Things” simply found its niche in that space between fact and fear, where potentially innocuous government activity becomes as unsettling as any monster.

So - a lot going on here. Prominent Jews are condemning conservatives who haven't condemned Candace Owens - accusing them of fueling antisemitism, while Megyn Kelly says that in general, attempts to label conservatives critical of Israeli policy as 'antisemites' is actually creating antisemites.

Tensions peaked at Turning Point USA's AmFest conference last week, where Shapiro downplayed the 1967 USS Liberty incident in which Israel attacked a US Navy ship and killed 34 Americans - calling it a 'mistake' that's now largely irrelevant because it happened so long ago:

The next day, Shapiro escalated during a speech at the Heritage Foundation in which he called Carlson an "enemy of the conservative movement" for promoting conspiracies.

Meanwhile, in a concurrent Vanity Fair interview, Megyn Kelly accused Shapiro and Weiss of "making antisemites" by aggressively labeling critics, calling Shapiro "Israel first," and criticizing their alleged efforts to "cancel" her from the movement.

To recap the drama:

Moments after Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, opened the conference with a speech calling her late husband a “peacemaker” and urging an end to the squabbling, Shapiro issued a blistering jeremiad that recalled William F. Buckley Jr.’s attempted excommunication of the far right. “The conservative movement is in serious danger,” Shapiro said, “from charlatans who claim to speak in the name of principle but actually traffic in conspiracism and dishonesty, who offer nothing but bile and despair.”

He denounced Candace Owens—a podcaster he once employed at The Daily Wire, the media company he co-founded—who has emerged as the chief purveyor of conspiracy theories about Kirk’s murder. Her videos investigating the killing, infused with all the drama of a true-crime documentary, have been viewed millions of times.

Shapiro extended his criticism to those he said have “refused to condemn Candace’s truly vicious attacks,” naming Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson, and Steve Bannon. The depiction of humanity's 'first contact' with alien life has been the subject of countless sci-fi films and novels, but a new research paper argues that if we ever discover the existence of alien intelligence, it will be far more 'loud' than previously imagined.

H. G. Wells' War of the Worlds and movies like Independence Day have 'preconditioned' many of us into thinking that our first experience of non-human intelligence from space will be violent and hostile.

Other depictions like Arrival (2016) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) show a more benevolent form of first contact, with more advanced alien civilizations attempting to share their wisdom.

But a top astronomer is now arguing that the history of extraterrestrial discoveries tells us something quite different.

Scientist David Kipping, a top researcher in the field of extraterrestrial intelligences (ETIs), has shared his new 'Eschatian hypothesis' on alien life in a new paper, detailing how our first contact will likely be a tragedy for the aliens.

Speaking ahead of the publication, Kipping explained on his YouTube channel: "Hollywood has preconditioned us to expect one of two types of alien contact, either a hostile invasion force or a benevolent species bestowing wisdom to humanity.

"But the Eschatian hypothesis is neither."

The history of scientific discovery is littered with examples where the first example we notice of an astronomical phenomena does not end up representing the overall picture.

Often, this 'detection bias' means the first observation astronomers make will be of the 'loudest' variable.

An easy example of this can be seen with the naked eye, which can perceive up to 2,500 stars in a clear night sky.

Around a third of these celestial bodies will be evolved giant stars that outshine smaller stars and red giants, despite these giants making up around one percent of stars in the observable universe.

Because of this, Kipping, who is director of the Cool Worlds Lab at Columbia University, argues that the first time we notice the tell-tale signatures of observable 'ETIs' in the universe, it will likely to be the result of some life-ending calamity befalling an alien civilization.

He argues in the research article: "If history is any guide, then perhaps the first signatures of extraterrestrial intelligence will too be highly atypical, 'loud' examples of their broader class.

"Motivated by this, we propose the Eschatian Hypothesis: that the first confirmed detection of an extraterrestrial technological civilization is most likely to be an atypical example, one that is unusually "loud" (i.e. producing an anomalously strong technosignature), and plausibly in a transitory, unstable, or even terminal phase."

These loud 'technosignatures' detectable millions of light years away by Earth's space observatories could be something as drastic as a sudden burst of energy, or even signs of a rapidly changing climate could be detected on our planet.

"Here, first contact is with a civilisation in its death throes, one that is violently flailing before the end," Kipping argues.

For astronomers, this hypothesis would mean that the most effective way to detect the existence of alien life would not be to target specific planets or solar systems, but to take a much broader approach to find these 'loud' signals of a civilization in collapse.

Russia launched a wave of attacks on Ukraine early Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring many others, and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. Already the electricity grid has long suffered under such crippling attacks, with barely any time or necessary parts for repair.

The assault occurred just a day before anticipated Ukraine peace talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump, expected at Mar-A-Lago on Sunday. According to The New York Times, air raid alarms sounded around 1:30am local time as the strikes began, with Zelensky later stating on X that nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles were used, mainly on energy sites and civilian infrastructure in the capital.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Telegram that 10 apartment buildings were hit and more than 20 people were injured. The Associated Press later updated the casualty count, reporting that 27, including two children, were wounded.

Zelensky has accused Russia of seeking to prolong the conflict and that ongoing peace negotiation efforts are simply a ruse. The Moscow side has accused Zelensky of essentially the same thing, and said he doesn't want to give up power.

Kyiv regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk announced of these latest strikes, "As of this morning, part of the left bank of the region remains without electricity. Currently, more than 320,000 consumers are without power."

Based on this fresh assault, Zelensky described, "Russian representatives engage in lengthy talks, but in reality, Kinzhals and Shaheds speak for them," he said. Russia has been chiefly relying Kinzhal ballistic missiles and Iranian designed Shahed in these daily strikes.

UFO events in Rendlesham Forest in December 1980 re-examined

The mystery of what happened in a Suffolk forest in December 1980 continues to fascinate and endure and now a new film has been made about the events to mark the 45th anniversary on Boxing Day.

Entitled "The Rendlesham UFO: The British Roswell," the new film available on Amazon re-examines the incident on December 27, 1980 in which United States Air Force (USAF) personnel reported seeing a strange glowing object in Rendlesham Forest, metallic in appearance and triangular in shape.

Since then, the sightings have continued to excite interest and speculation among investigators, journalists and the public alike, with a UFO trail having been created through the forest, leading to the site where the "craft" was spotted.

The first sighting took place at 2am on December 27 when a USAF security patrol saw unusual lights through the trees outside the East Gate to RAF Woodbridge airfield, which was then being used by the USAF.

When they went to investigate, they found a conical-shaped object about the size of a car in a clearing on the eastern edge of the forest, which appeared to be floating on beams of light about 12 inches above the ground and appeared to be surrounded by a mist.

The craft appeared to have black markings on the side, but when they went to approach it, the object rose rapidly in a flash of light and disappeared.

The next night a patrol reported seeing a "pyramid-shaped" object about 30ft across and 20ft high, which shot upwards and disappeared following an hour-long chase by the personnel.

Various explanations for the sightings have been mooted over the years, including UFOs, natural phenomena and the beam from the nearby Orford lighthouse.

Film maker and UFO researcher Mark Christopher Lee said: "Despite official explanations offered over the years, the Rendlesham Forest incident has never been conclusively explained.

Berlin must send troops to Ukraine as part of a potential peace settlement, according to Manfred Weber, the leader of the European People’s Party (EPP) – a political group with the biggest faction in the EU Parliament. Brussels cannot rely on Washington to secure peace between Moscow and Kiev, the politician told Funke Media Group in an interview published this week.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected the idea of any NATO presence in Ukraine. It also named the US-led bloc’s expansion to the East one of the root causes of the conflict.

Kiev’s Western backers, including France and the UK have occasionally raised the issue of NATO troop deployment to Ukraine throughout the conflict. The plan was given another impetus earlier this month at the talks in Berlin, where US officials met with the Ukrainian delegation, the leaders of Germany, France, the UK, and eight other European countries.

”We cannot seriously expect Trump to secure a peace settlement solely with American troops. And when we talk about European troops, Germany cannot be left out,” Weber said. “After a ceasefire or a peace agreement, the European flag must fly along the [contact] line.”

He also claimed he did not “see” the Russian leadership “pursuing the path of peace” and called on Kiev’s European backers to demonstrate strength.

Moscow has repeatedly stated it is ready and willing to resolve the conflict peacefully as long as the other side demonstrates a similar commitment and the root causes of the crisis are addressed. On Friday, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that the conflict resolution was “really close” but warned that Kiev and its European backers are actively trying to “torpedo” the peace process.

The Trump administration has not confirmed the extent of its support for the European plan. Weber also called on the EU to act independently from the US in security matters, prompting the NATO head, Mark Rutte, to warn that creating alternatives to the bloc would not benefit its European members.

As Hillary Clinton closed in on the presidential nomination in the spring of 2016, FBI field officers advised colleagues at headquarters to press her on the foreign donations flowing to the Clinton Foundation while she steered American foreign policy and whether she had used the charity as a campaign piggy bank.

But FBI HQ in Washington — a city in which the former secretary of state and first lady wields enormous influence — let the trail go cold.

FBI New York Assistant Director in Charge Diego Rodriguez advised agents in Washington to ask Clinton several questions about the foundation, which are reproduced in full in documents released to the Senate Judiciary Committee by the FBI and published on Dec. 15. (p. 22) The questions reveal the concerns about foreign bribery that the Clinton Foundation case — codenamed “Cracked Foundation” — had uncovered. (p. 41)

Among the evidence available to investigators, according to their questions: A recorded conversation between Clinton and Indian hotel magnate Sant Singh Chatwal in which Clinton discussed donations to the foundation and her remaining 2008 campaign debt. The new documents confirm that FBI had at one time been “intercepting individuals associated with the Clinton Foundation.” (p. 23)

But when Clinton arrived to the FBI two months later, in July 2016, to answer questions about her use of a private email server in a separate investigation codenamed “Midyear Exam,” D.C. agents asked nothing about the allegations of pay-to-play with foreign governments or use of the global charity as a slush fund.

The Clinton Foundation did not respond to a request for comment. Chatwal could not be reached for comment.

In the 1600s, imported English Thoroughbred horses were first bred with assorted local horses on the Eastern seaboard of colonial America.[4]

In the 19th century, pioneers heading West needed a hardy, willing horse. On the Great Plains, settlers encountered horses that descended from the Spanish stock Hernán Cortés and other Conquistadors had introduced into the viceroyalty of New Spain, which became the Southwestern United States and Mexico.

The horses of the West included herds of feral animals known as Mustangs, as well as horses domesticated by Native Americans, including the Comanche, Shoshoni and Nez Perce tribes.[13][14] As the colonial Quarter Horse was crossed with these western horses, the pioneers found that the new crossbred had innate "cow sense", a natural instinct for working with cattle, making it popular with cattlemen on ranches.[15]

New corruption scandal erupts in Kiev

Anti-graft agencies have said that they have uncovered an illegal lobbying scheme in parliament following an undercover operation

Ukraine’s anti-corruption authorities saythey have uncovered a criminal vote-rigging and bribery scheme involving serving members of the country’s parliament, following an undercover operation.

The development comes ahead of a meeting between Vladimir Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in Florida.

Kiev is still reeling from a major corruption scandal in state nuclear operator Energoatom, involving Zelensky’s longtime associate, Timur Mindich. Two ministers and the Ukrainian leader’s influential chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, were ousted in the wake of the revelations.

Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) exposed an organized criminal enterprise involving serving MPs, the agencies reported on Saturday.

“According to the investigation, the group’s members systematically received illicit benefits in exchange for voting in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine,” NABU said in a statement on Telegram.

Members of Ukraine’s State Security Administration,a law enforcement agency subordinate to the Ukrainian presidency and the Rada, were “illegally” interfering with NABU agents during the ongoing investigation, the anti-graft agency noted.

On Saturday, NABU reportedly conducted searches in the Rada’s Transport Committee, which is led by Yuri Kisel, a member of Zelensky’s ruling party.

Earlier in December, Ukrainian outlet ZN.ua reported that anti-graft agencies discovered an illegal lobbying “cash window” after wire-tapping the MP over the course of two years.

NABU and SAPO began their broader crackdown earlier this year, with their revelations on a $100 million kickback scheme in Energoatom.

While the investigation implicated the Ukrainian leader’s close aides and former associates, Zelensky has distanced himself from the scandal.

However, nearly 40% of Ukrainians believe the Ukrainian leader is implicated in corruption, according to a recent Socis poll.

The country’s leadership has long devolved into a “criminal gang that holds power for personal enrichment,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week. In these last days, the Trump Administration has boarded or seized three tankers either loaded with Venezuelan oil or destined for Venezuela (such as the Bella1). The most egregious seizure – in terms of illegality – being a Chinese-owned, Panama-flagged vessel reportedly destined for China – and on no one’s sanctions list.

In a different zone of conflict, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) last Friday claimed that it had struck a Russian so-called ‘shadow fleet’ tanker, the Qendil, with aerial drones in waters of the Mediterranean Sea off Morocco. The SBU did not give further details of the attack, including how the SBU deployed a drone in the Mediterranean (2,000 Km from Ukraine), or the site from which it was launched. The SBU source said the cargo ship was empty at the time of the attack.

President Putin, in midst of his annual question and answer marathon, vowed that Russia would retaliate.

‘Blockades’, seizures and attacks, very plainly, are acts of war (despite the U.S. claim that America owns all oil produced by Venezuela – until all historical U.S. legal claims against Venezuela are satisfied). This tanker-episode is yet another ratchet to the drift to lawlessness in U.S. foreign policy.

These acts pre-eminently are aimed at China (which has large equities in the Venezuelan oil industry) and Russia, which has longstanding ties to both Venezuela and Cuba (now under Trump ‘blockade’ too). This latter transfer has infuriated China.

What this suggests is that the National Strategy Statement (NSS) in respect to China (it states that Washington views China as no longer constituting a ‘prime threat’, but only as an economic competitor) is meaningless rhetoric. China is being treated as an adversarial threat and will respond as such.

China and Russia will ‘read’ the Trump Administration by its actions, rather than its NSS rhetoric. And the signals speak plainly to escalatory steps.

Put all this into the context of ‘leaks’ by senior Trump officials which Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard says are “lies and propaganda”. She says the claims that “the ‘U.S. intelligence community’ agrees to, and supports the EU/NATO viewpoint, that Russia’s aim is to invade/conquer Europe (in order to ‘gin up support’ for their pro-war policies)” — that these are lies being pushed by what she terms “Deep State warmongers and their Propaganda Media … to undermine Trump’s efforts to bring peace to Ukraine”.

“The truth”, Gabbard writes on Twitter, is the opposite:

Protesters in Tel Aviv will gather at Habima Square and march to the Savidor train station. Set to speak at Habima is Merav Svirsky, whose parents were murdered in Kibbutz Be’eri during the October 7 attack and whose brother Itay was killed in captivity in Gaza.

The plan was given another impetus earlier this month at the talks in Berlin, where US officials met with the Ukrainian delegation, the leaders of Germany, France, the UK, and eight other European countries.

”We cannot seriously expect Trump to secure a peace settlement solely with American troops.And when we talk about European troops, Germany cannot be left out,” Weber said. “After a ceasefire or a peace agreement, the European flag must fly along the [contact] line.”

He also claimed he did not “see” the Russian leadership “pursuing the path of peace” and called on Kiev’s European backers to demonstrate strength.

Moscow has repeatedly stated it is ready and willing to resolve the conflict peacefully as long as the other side demonstrates a similar commitment and the root causes of the crisis are addressed. On Friday, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that the conflict resolution was “really close” but warned that Kiev and its European backers are actively trying to “torpedo” the peace process.

The Trump administration has not confirmed the extent of its support for the European plan. Weber also called on the EU to act independently from the US in security matters, prompting the NATO head, Mark Rutte, to warn that creating alternatives to the bloc would not benefit its European members.

Almost 30 years ago, Samuel Huntington published “The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order”, where he famously said that “the West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion, but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence”. For instance, Ancient China certainly had the technological know-how to achieve absolute superiority over much (if not most) of the world, but simply chose not to, instead focusing on trade. Namely, the Asian giant was behind several world-altering technologies that could’ve ensured that.

This includes gunpowder, paper and the printing press, three inventions without which the modern world is entirely unviable and unimaginable. However, we didn’t see China build massive invasion forces that would go around the planet, robbing entire continents of their native populations and settling colonists on their lands. It was the political West which did that centuries after acquiring those technologies from China and refining them into brutal killing machines. Ever since, there hasn’t been a single technology that Western nations haven’t adapted to be used for this purpose. This hasn’t changed in the slightest to this very day and there are no indicators it ever will.

Namely, while the multipolar (i.e., the actual) world is looking to regulate and limit artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent its misuse and abuse, the most powerful Western nation, the United States, is pursuing the full integration of advanced AI into its so-called “kill chain”. The Pentagon is doing this in close partnership with xAI. The company, known for operating X (formerly Twitter) and Grok AI chatbot, is owned by Elon Musk, a controversial billionaire (or soon-to-be trillionaire, if his uncontrollable wealth accumulation continues) with very close ties with the US military. Namely, his SpaceX has been working with the Pentagon to provide advanced services such as the now (in)famous Starlink.

The system is also used for advanced communications and ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) by the Neo-Nazi junta in NATO-occupied Ukraine, where it provided a major advantage until it was largely suppressed by Russian EW (electronic warfare) assets. SpaceX is also working with the Pentagon to provide orbital launch options. Interestingly, Musk often speaks about the dangers of AI and is adamant that it shouldn’t be used in warfare, calling it “more dangerous than nuclear weapons”. What made him change his mind is anyone’s guess, but here we are, as one of his most prospective companies is weaponizing AI for the world’s most aggressive country.

The NY Times last month told a remarkable story about how the record $10.4 million grant the Tikvah Fund secured from the National Endowment for the Humanities was rammed through.
