After stepping on the bus in the middle of Times Square, a TMZ-trained tour guide — handsome, blond, amiable Australian — will ask you and the rest of the bus if you’re a huge fan of the show. You’ll clap; the rest of the bus will roar in agreement. When a tanned, smiling face shows up on the television screen above your seat, you’ll be prompted to cheer for “our fearless leader, Harvey!” — and laugh when the guide promises to show you “all the places where celebrities party and bone and get diseases.” Here on the bus, you become one of TMZ’s people — the ones who’ve helped turned a gossip website into a $55 million yearly enterprise.

 

The TMZ tour gives the same experience of a generic Manhattan tour — the story of Times Square, which, in the guide’s words, "isn’t just home to 1,000 illegal immigrants working as Disney characters"; a quick turn through the Meatpacking District; a view of Central Park — only punctuated with landmarks of celebrity significance, introduced with TMZ’s trademark leering tone. BuzzFeed spoke to nearly two dozen former TMZ employees, and it’s clear that Bieber’s tape was not the only near-priceless piece of dirt in the proverbial

TMZ vault.

(TMZ did not respond to multiple requests for comment.) According to these ex-employees, the

sealed testimonies from the Michael Jackson molestation trial hide there as does footage of various celebrities — Bieber, Lohan, Travolta — behaving badly.

 

The vault isn’t a secret at TMZ — even the lowest on the staff ladder have heard whispers of its existence. As to

what goes up on the site and what stays vaulted, that’s a finer, more esoteric calculus — and one in which celebrities and their publicists have come to live in fear.

and, via spin-off TMZSports, instigated the $2 billion sale of an NBA team by applying the same surveillance

to a racist owner (Donald Sterling) once reserved for the Hollywood stars and socialites.

 

Before TMZ, the gossip landscape was predominantly characterized by what those in the industry call “blow job news” — tidbits and sound bites that flatter the egos and images of celebrities. But

TMZ disrupts that. It trades in scandal, and revels in exposing the narrative for what it is: a story as fictional as the films and television shows in which these stars appear.

Then in November 2014, the Obama administration made Chinese birth tourism “even easier” when President Obama announced a ten-year reciprocal visa agreement with China, he continues.

 

Other companies offer high-brow services, like award-winning chefs and Chinese medical consultations, as well as extensive consultations about living permanently in the U.S. China Mifubaby Group (Mifu), a luxury baby operation based in Irvine, California, is comprised of at least 50 properties, and nearly every property was purchased for more than $1 million with a mortgage, Schweizer reports.

 

“Beijing’s appeal to the Chinese elite encouraging US birth tourism has nothing to do with American values or patriotism. Birth tourism operators tout that the United States is ‘the most attractive nationality’ because of free stuff, not freedom,” he writes. “US citizens receive ‘free education from junior high school to public high school,’ and even ‘senior supplement benefits [Social Security and Medicare] when you are living overseas.’ One Chinese agency offers ‘a primer on how the US welfare system works.”’

 

“Another agency describes how ‘parents can apply for immigration as guardians at almost zero cost . . . [and] parents can emigrate to the United States without quota restrictions and go to California to enjoy the sunshine after retirement, as well as enjoy California’s white card program for the elderly and free medical care,”’ he continues, before quoting a birth tourism agent who says the industry’s return on investment is “higher than robbing a bank.”

 

Chinese baby tourism operators “frame the practice as a legitimate business model, not fraud,” Schweizer writes.

 

“Chinese officials seem to agree. Lawyer Liang Zhiyi explained to a Chinese government newspaper, ‘[Birth] tourism is an opportunity to make money. An elderly victim of cyber crime no longer has to worry how she will pay the bills thanks to investigators who turned her life around.

 

Seventy-one-year-old Jeanette Voss of Bennington, Vermont, was forced to obsess over saving money after cyber scammers took her life savings which was $950,000 just over four years ago, NHPR reported January 20.

 

Voss, who lives in a small home, rationed her car trips, unplugged appliances, and checked her bank account frequently to ensure she had enough money to live on.The outlet said when the scammers took her money, she ended up living on her Social Security checks and used food stamps for groceries.

 

It seemed to Voss all was lost even though she had responsibly planned for retirement.She also felt down because due to not having that money, she was unable to afford visiting loved ones who lived out of state.

 

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2025 highlighted the problem of elder fraud, explaining that criminals target and take advantage of that vulnerable group.

 

“The FBI continues to work with our local, state, tribal, and federal partners to tackle elder fraud and stop those who attempt to harm the elderly,” the agency said.

 

However,everything changed for Voss when she learned the United States Secret Service had been working on her case and others like it.

 

“Investigators traced $648,000 of her funds to a cryptocurrency account associated with a man involved in the international scam ring, court records show. After seizing the crypto wallet, government officials sold the tokens in order to compensate Voss and some of the other 20-plus victims,”the NHPR article said, noting every penny was returned to her, plus interest, with a total of $1,033,000.

 

The United States Secret Service highlighted the case in a social media post on Monday:

Voss discovered the money in her bank account on Christmas Eve, and she is now planning to visit relatives in California. In addition, she spent some money on food for the neighborhood animals who lifted her spirits when she thought things would never change.

 

“I bought some raw peanuts in the shell for the squirrels. That was my big celebration, honestly. I really couldn’t think of anything that I needed,” she explained.

 

According to the United States Secret Service website, the elderly are disproportionately targeted by all kinds of financial scams and it “works closely with local and federal law enforcement agencies to investigate these crimes.”

The list of exclusives extends for pages, suggesting a close collaboration between TMZ and Bieber’s management. According to TMZ, it chose not to post the video because Bieber “was 15” and “immediately told his friends what he did was stupid.” The statement does mesh with TMZ’s self-regulatory practices; as Harvey Levin put it in 2008, “Everybody has standards. That’s something that really matters to us and we deal with that every day. We turn down a lot of stories.” Maybe so. But as the trail of Bieber exclusives suggests, it might also get something in return.

 

TMZ also exploits a mostly untapped resource: the massive stream of court documents processed through the Los Angeles Court System. If you go to the ninth floor of the Los Angeles courthouse and know where to look, you’ll find the door to the “press room," dingy, with an overpowering smell of old flop sweat, and stuffed with dilapidated vinyl couches, cheap office furniture, and ancient computers.

 

There’s a line of computers with various “Reserved for” signs tacked above, a room for the Associated Press, and another for TMZ, where a group of staffers scan every docket that passes through the court system. It’s through these staffers' endless labor that TMZ is able to beat the rest of the industry to report who’s filed a restraining order, a name change, for divorce, or a suit against a star. This information isn’t hidden, and it’s not exclusive to TMZ — but the willingness to bankroll that labor ensures the branding status of “first.”

 

Owning the source — either by paying for it in the form of tips or paying the videographer who catches it — also sets TMZ apart from its competitors. Instead of relying on paparazzi — whom TMZ would have to pay on a sliding scale contingent on the quality/value of the material — with little, if any, sense of site loyalty, they hired their own paparazzi, some more professional than others. What mattered in the rough-and-tumble game of mid-2000s paparazzi, however, wasn’t skill so much as tenacity, which is why one of Levin’s hires purportedly came from the parking lot of a gas station, where he was hocking CDs with such persistence that Levin knew he’d make a perfect TMZ pap.

 

These paparazzi aren’t investigative reporters. Their only goal: Get celebrities on tape however you can without chasing them or breaking the law. They specialize not in photographs but video, no matter how unremarkable. In the early days, they’d set up shop at the hot clubs of the time (Pure, LAX) and simply wait for drunk celebrities to come out and engage them — which is exactly how TMZ nabbed the incendiary footage of oil and entertainment heir Brandon Davis calling Lindsay Lohan a “fire crotch.”

RFK Jr. Announces $100 Million Program Aimed At Homelessness And Addiction

 

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Feb. 2 announced a new $100 million program that he said will help homeless people find jobs and treat drug abuse.

 

The $100 million investment is aimed at assisting homeless people and drug users in recovering from addiction, finding employment, and locating stable housing.

 

Kennedy told an event on Prevention Day—which is sponsored by the government and dedicated to preventing drug abuse—in Washington on Monday that the health care system under the previous administration was designed to cycle people who suffer from mental illness and drug addiction “between sidewalks, emergency room visits, jails, mental hospitals, and shelters.”

 

“No one took responsibility for the whole person. No one stayed long enough to help them recover, to help them reestablish their links, and teach them the lessons of how to live in a community,” he said. “That system is neither humane nor effective.”

 

Kennedy, who has said his addiction to heroin ended with help from 12-step programs, said that the $100 million would fund pilot initiatives that are crafted to resolve long-term homelessness and reduce opioid addiction by expanding treatment regimens that emphasize recovery and self-sufficiency. The program is known as Safety Through Recovery, Engagement, and Evidence-based Treatment and Supports, or STREETS.

 

“STREETS will engage people continuously, from first contact on the street through recovery, through employment, and through self-sufficiency,” Kennedy said. “Law enforcement, first responders, courts, housing providers, and health care systems will work as one team, so people will no longer fall through the cracks.”

Thanks for your interest in the Dick Cavett episode of American Masters. I know I'm prejudiced, but I believe my

husband is a genius who deserves special recognition for his impact on the cultural history of the U.S. during his

decades of tv work, moviemaking, and writing. His brain should be studied by scientists but quick, before it's available

to them, we should encapsulate this history. American Masters is the best way to do this. Of course, I can't say any of

this to the producers, so this will be our little secret.

Your interest has gone a long way toward helping us make progress on this, because in the last few weeks, I've learned

a lot about funding, and about production for American Masters. I have spoken with three potential producers. I have

an appointment next week with Michael Cantor, who leads the American Masters series, and who has expressed

interest in producing the "Dick Cavett" episode. Technically, the donors and subject (in other words, you and Cavett —

or me) cannot have any influence on the film itself, to protect the integrity of the "documentary" process, even though

of course we can be advocates. We also believe this can be done at a very high production level for lower cost than

might be the case for two reasons: (1) We have reason to believe we can direct all the budget directly to producing

the show, and none of it to general PBS funding coffers, and (2) We own all the shows and have knowledge about them

that makes working with them efficient.

Here's where we are:

The American Masters episodes are production dependent for budget, of course. Some episodes (e.g. Johnny Carson)

cost about $1,000,000 in production, thanks to estate ownerships, music licensing, and PBS taking an "overhead"

charge. In my recent research, the highest number I heard was $1.4 million for "Bing Crosby." Others (e.g. Willa

Cather) have cost about $250,000 because they are primarily about a few interviews, basic writing, a voice over and

simple video of photos and papers, with little to no PBS markup.

Here's what we envision for The Dick Cavett episode:

We already have spent a ton of money collecting, salvaging, restoring, digitizing, and annotating over 1800 programs

from ABC, PBS, and CNBC. The legal work on ownership is finished. The Writers Guild, the music licensing, etc. has all

been paid. Although we currently charge about $9,000/minute in licensing fees for use of show clips, which will not

recoup the costs of the archival work in our lifetime, we can release the use of any and all footage to this special

project because the producer (PBS) is a non-profit organization. But we can't just give it gratis (although we'd certainly

be willing to) because that contribution would constitute a violation of the separation of subject and donor. So we will

have to charge a little — how little we can get away with has yet to be determined, but we will likely need 45-ish

minutes of clips in a 90-minute show, and the production budget must allow for a person or crew to sift through MANY

hours of shows to set up the story; fortunately our annotation makes that efficient.

 

Additionally, we will need

• Researching and writing the script

• Directing

• Production interviews (with camera/audio/etc.), with 8-10 people such asWoody Allen, Alec Baldwin, Stephen

Colbert, Eddie Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, the author of The Late Shift, Jimmy Fallon, Steve Cohen,

DC's NYTimes editor, etc.Although we would not be offering pay to any of the interviewees, we may need to

cover some travel expenses, green room, make up etc. for folks of this caliber.

• Voice Over work.Alec Baldwin has already offered to do this gratis.

• Interviews with Cavett, which should be done on location in Nebraska, at Yale, in New York City, and in Tick Hall

at Montauk. Even a lean production crew will carry expenses.

• Editing

• Post-production

So, we keep coming back to approximately $500,000 (and possibly more, but a little bird tells me Michael Cantor can

get that, maybe). We are thrilled and delighted that someone you know may want to support this effort. And if that

support can only come at half that level (250K), we are still thrilled and delighted. The first money in is the hardest,

and once we have that, PBS is likely to find the rest of the support, the way they do. (And maybe we can donate the

clip footage for a really low price.) I'm told that this is about as far as we can go on budget specifics until PBS officially

decides to produce this, and a director is named (We are leaning toward Stephen Ives, Insignia Films, as Director, with

Robert Bader as Executive Producer).

Is this enough information to take to your potential donor? Woody's made a lot of movies, and should be able to

confirm these projected costs. Let us know what else you need from us.

One soldier charged. Many others left suspended indefinitely, their lives stalled in legal limbo.

 

This pursuit of accountability was not timid or symbolic. It did not flinch at rank, reputation, or heroism. Australia went after its returning heroes, including Victoria Cross recipients, and some of the most decorated units in its military history. It did so publicly and without fear or favour.

 

No medal or mythology placed anyone beyond scrutiny.

 

Australia wanted the world to see that it would investigate its own forces, not just individuals but units and chains of command, even when it was humiliating and politically costly.

 

Soldiers going overseas

When Australians travelled to join ISIS, the response was faster and harsher. Passports cancelled. Homes raided. Surveillance expanded. Citizenship stripping powers deployed. Wives treated as accomplices. Children framed as future threats. Suspicion alone was often enough to trigger punishment. Due process became optional.

Medical staff were detained directly from wards and operating theatres, taken without charge, many remaining in detention months later.

 

This is not collateral damage. It is the dismantling of a healthcare system in real time.

 

Human rights atrocity

Mass detention has accompanied the physical destruction. Thousands of Palestinians have been taken without charge or access to legal counsel. Human rights organisations have documented beatings, starvation, stress positions, and sexual abuse in detention. Medical professionals and journalists were not spared. They were targeted.

The prosecutor said it did not affect his decisions as an attorney or his decision to seek the death penalty.

 

In a hearing on Tuesday, the parties in the case regarding Tyler Robinson, the man charged with assassinating Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, argued over a motion from the defense seeking to disqualify the Utah County Attorney's Office from prosecuting the case over an alleged conflict of interest involving a prosecutor whose daughter was present at the September shooting.

 

She did not witness the shooting and is not a witness in the case. Prosecutors told Judge Graf that the daughter's life was not disrupted, she did not seek therapy, and she did not miss classes.

 

 

After hearing the arguments from both sides, Judge Graf said he would issue his ruling on February 24 at 10:30 am local time. Once the matter of prosecutor disqualification is dispatched, the next matter of business will be whether or not cameras will be permitted in the court room. One still camera and one video camera have been permitted in the court room during hearings, but they have been heavily restricted as to what they can show and not show. That hearing will be via Webex and will be audio only as the defense has been insistent that Robinson not be seen on camera.

The prosecutor in question, known as "Prosecutor A" in court docs and identified in the courtroom as Chad Grunander, testified. He said that he has been a prosecutor with the Utah County Attorney’s Office for nearly 22 years.

 

He said he was making a presentation to the elected county attorneys for the state of Utah at a conference around the time of the shooting, and that after he finished his presentation, he began receiving text messages from his daughter, with one sent at 12:26 pm local time stating, in all caps, "someone was shot," and another message that said "something to the effect of I’m okay."

 

He said he and his daughter spoke briefly over the phone moments later, adding that "I don’t know that we even talked too much about the facts" of what occurred, "but I wanted to make sure she was okay." He said he spoke with Gray about the messages and alerted him to the situation, as well as a few attorneys in the Utah County Attorney’s Office. He testified that by around 12:50 pm he was on the road heading down to Utah County.

 

When he arrived, he and Gray "tried to understand what was happening. It was quite chaotic." When asked if he had mentioned to anyone that his daughter was a potential witness, to which he replied that he was "sure I mentioned that my daughter was there and left a bag behind," but "I don’t think I would have, I am confident I didn’t characterize it as she’s a potential witness here, or say that she was there during the incident that happened."

 

He said, as chief deputy in the office, he was "part of the effort in deciding what charges were appropriate," but added that Gray "has to approve the charges" in any homicide case. "The ultimate approval was Mr Gray’s."

 

He said that in the days following the shooting, "by the time we were talking about the death penalty my role was, do we have the facts to support an aggravating factor under Utah law that would support a potential death penalty case, but I don’t remember a conversation with Jeff Gray where he asked, what would you do in this situation. But there would have been discussions."

 

When asked what motivated him to disclose his link to the shooting to the defense, he said, "what motivated my behavior was to act wth professionalism and integrity, disclose this to the defense. But don’t mistake our disclosure, my disclosure, our abundance of caution, our professionalism, integrity, to be a concession that we believe there’s merit to this alleged conflict."

‘The paper era is over’: Giustra warns of ‘take down’ in gold, calls ‘project vault’ a signal of new world order

 

(Kitco News) - The massive sell-off that rocked precious metals markets last week was not a standard correction but a calculated "liquidity event" and a "take down," according to mining mogul Frank Giustra, who warns that the 50-year dominance of paper gold pricing is coming to a chaotic end.

 

In an exclusive interview with Kitco News, the Fiore Group CEO broke down the mechanics of the flash crash, the White House’s newly launched "Project Vault," and why he believes the US is living on "borrowed time" as it faces an inevitable monetary reset.

 

A "Take Down" on a Friday Afternoon

 

Addressing the sharp 20% drop in gold and the "haircut" in silver prices that wiped out months of gains in 48 hours, Giustra dismissed the idea that the move was driven by fundamentals. Instead, he pointed to market structure and leverage.

 

"The metal complex didn't just see a correction, it was a liquidity event," Giustra said. "It happened on a Friday… Asia was closed, so there was no support. It was a Friday afternoon and… whoever had short positions on silver, especially, I'm sure participated in that downward… take down. In my opinion, it was a take down."

 

The sell-off was exacerbated by a swift tightening of trading conditions. Following the historic volatility, the CME Group raised margin requirements on gold and silver futures effective February 2, forcing leveraged traders to post significantly more collateral. Maintenance margins for speculative gold positions jumped to 8% from 6%, while silver margins saw a steeper hike to 15% from 11%.

 

Giustra noted that the crash was "overdue" after a parabolic run-up that saw gold approach $5,000 an ounce. "There was no fundamental changes in the long-term thesis… anybody who believes that [a parabolic move] can sustain itself without a correction… hasn't been in the market long enough," he said.

 

The Death of Paper Gold

 

For decades, the price of gold has been largely determined by futures contracts and derivatives—the "paper market." Giustra argues this era is now ending as pricing power shifts to Eastern exchanges requiring physical delivery.

 

"For the past 40, almost 50 years, the paper market has controlled the gold price," Giustra said, adding that it has often been used as a "mechanism to suppress the price." But with physical demand surging in China and Asia, he believes the "paper players are losing their efficacy."

 

He issued a blunt warning to investors relying on ETFs rather than bullion: "In a crisis, you better own physical gold… paper gold won't cut it. If you don't own physical gold, you don't own gold."

 

‘Globalization Is Dead’ & Project Vault

 

The interview came just hours after the White House officially unveiled "Project Vault," a massive $12 billion initiative designed to secure critical mineral supply chains. The project, backed by a $10 billion loan from the Export-Import Bank and nearly $2 billion in private capital, aims to build a civilian strategic reserve for materials like cobalt and gallium, mirroring the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

 

Giustra views the initiative - which includes participation from industry giants like GM, Boeing, and Google - as a definitive signal that the free-market era is over, replaced by "state capitalism."

 

"Globalization is as dead as the dodo bird," Giustra declared. "The world is splitting up into camps… both in the economic and geopolitical sense… The old one [world order] is dead."

 

While he welcomed the US move to secure supply chains, he described the $12 billion commitment as "not a lot of money" compared to China’s decades-long head start. "The West… is trying to play catch-up now… They have no choice. China controls the critical minerals market and has for a long time."

 

The Debt Trap & ‘End of Fiat’

 

Giustra’s outlook for the US dollar remains dire. With interest payments consuming over $1 trillion annually and deficits rising by $2 trillion a year, he sees no mathematical way out other than currency debasement.

 

"We're living on borrowed time," he said. "There's no way to stop this train."

 

He predicted that this fiscal path will lead to a historic monetary reset. "We're coming to the end of the time of fiat," Giustra stated. "That's the only way historically that we've seen a reset in the global monetary system is you start with a complete debasement of currencies… and then you have to start from scratch."
