Eric Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign is reeling from accusations of sexual misconduct.

One day after top advisers to Eric Swalwell abandoned his campaign, staffers from his congressional office and campaign released an unsigned statement Saturday expressing support for women who came forward, saying “any decision of staff members to remain in their roles in the interim should not be viewed as support for Eric Swalwell.”

“We stand with our former colleague, and the other women who have come forward,” the statement reads. “We believe you should stand with them, too. The behavior detailed in these reports is abhorrent, beneath the dignity of those serving in public office and betrays the trust of all Californians.”

 

The statement was provided to POLITICO by a senior staffer with Swalwell’s campaign who was granted anonymity because they feared reprisal for speaking out. They attributed it to more than a dozen unnamed staffers in both his campaign and congressional office. It comes after at least four departures Friday from the lawmaker’s campaign for California governor, which has been in a tailspin since the accusations surfaced.

The unsigned statement expresses support for the women who have accused Swalwell of sexual misconduct and horror at the allegations detailed Friday by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, including from a former staffer who alleges he sexually assaulted her twice while she was too drunk to consent. POLITICO did not independently verify the reports.

The unsigned statement reads, “As leaders of teams working for Eric Swalwell, we’re horrified by the recent reporting in the San Francisco Chronicle and by CNN.”

Swalwell, a lawmaker from the Bay Area, said he would fight what he called “flat false” allegations of sexual assault and remain in the race for California govenor. His attorney, Elias Dabaie, did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the staffers’ statement.

However, the unidentified staffers sought to defend those staying on during what they described as a transition period to ensure continuity of constituent services, noting “we lead teams who need guidance and stability now, more than ever.”

 

They said that if they remain in their jobs it would be, in part, to support junior staff who cannot “immediately forfeit their income and benefits without significant personal risk or consequence,” stressing, “our responsibility now is to them.”

Swalwell, in video posted on social media Friday, denied allegations of sexual assault, while apologizing to his wife for unspecified “mistakes” in his past.

 

“They are absolutely false,” Swalwell said in the video. “They did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have.”

Dabaie told CNN on Friday that his client “intends to continue his campaign,” while saying it’s “not clear” when he might return to the trail. Swalwell has said he intends to spend time with family and friends this weekend.

But Swalwell’s campaign suspended fundraising via the platform ActBlue on Friday. A spokesperson for ActBlue confirmed that the campaign, not the website, had deactivated the page and directed questions to Swalwell’s campaign, which did not respond to a question about his fundraising.

Many prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as California Sens. Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla, called on Swalwell to drop out of the governor’s race on Friday.

 

On Saturday, the executive council of the powerful California Labor Federation said it had voted unanimously to withdraw its support for Swalwell. Lorena Gonzalez, head of the labor federation, said, “Ultimately, our duty is to serve California’s workers, not any politician.”

The leadership of SEIU California also voted to yank its support and urged Swalwell to “immediately” end his campaign. The union added, “Every person who stands up to power and speaks out about abuse is helping to create safer workplaces and a safer society for all.”

It appears that the zero enrichment poison pill killed the Islamabad negotiations yesterday. We have 9 more days in this cease fire to fix this, but we must pursue our goals not Israel's.

 

Trump's redline has always been no nuclear weapons for Iran, not zero enrichment. Iran agrees with this and has not sought to develop or obtain a nuke since 2003 but needs to retain the ability to enrich for their "not Saddam but not Qaddafi" policy to work.

 

This makes negotiations between the U.S. & Iran workable as the dispute is on levels of enrichment and monitoring.

 

This is a threat to Israel getting us to do the heavy lifting in the regime change/decapitation war they want.

 

Israel needs us chasing every trace of uranium in Iran because that ensures we stay engaged militarily in Iran, because how do we ever fully make sure Iran can't enrich without taking out the regime?

Why the world failed to bypass the Strait of Hormuz

In 2019, while working on the energy desk at Reuters,I began reporting on a question that has shadowed global oil markets for decades: what would happen if the Strait of Hormuz were closed?

 

For me,the question was not abstract. I came froma country where, for more than half a century, leaders had repeatedly threatened to weaponize the Strait. As an energy correspondent, I wanted to understand whether the region had built credible alternatives, or the world was still exposed to a risk it preferred to ignore.

 

Routing oil supplies away from the Strait of Hormuz has been a recurring topicin the Middle East, especially since the “tanker wars” of the 1980s.Regional governments had long been reviewing and funding contingency plans to deal with a possible closure of the Straitand to reroute their oil and petroleum exports.

 

Yet most of these plans never moved beyond paper, even after cabinet approvals. Those that did remained underfunded, and the volumes they could carry were a drop in the bucket compared to the total flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

 

Analysts I spoke to at the time believed such plans were not economically feasiblein the absence of a real disruption. Thereality was that regional countries were reluctant to commit billions of dollarsto precautionary infrastructure that might never be needed.

 

Andeven if disruption did occur, many of them believed it would be short-lived — that the United States would intervene militarily and reopen the waterway quickly. (So the U.S. was always going to be their savior even though our country doesn’t use it.)

 

The alternative routes

As a result,projects remained limited in scope. Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline carried oil to the Red Sea, but its capacity increases remained modest relative to the scale of Hormuz. The UAE’s Fujairah terminal bypassed the Strait, but remained geographically too close to be fully secure.

 

Other routes were even more constrained. The Iraq–Turkey pipeline faced political disputes between Baghdad and the Kurdish region over oil rights and territory.The Iraqi Pipeline through Saudi Arabia (IPSA), built by Saddam Hussein in 1989 to bypass Hormuz, has been largely inactive since 1990. Plans for a pipeline to Jordan’s Aqaba port depended on fragile Iraqi-Jordanian relations.

 

Deep-seated rivalriesacross the region prevented the implementation of most cross-border projects. The alternative plans were small, and governments were so reluctant to share information that I abandoned the article.

 

Two winners

Only two countries took the threat seriously.

 

China diversified its energy sources over the past decade and worked to reduce its dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.

 

The second was Iran, which built the Goreh–Jask pipeline to bypass the strait altogether, and also invested heavily in its ability to affect alternative routes.

 

Tehran repeatedly reminded regional countries that these alternative routes were vulnerable. The 2019 attacks on oil tankers near Fujairah, the 2019 drone strike on Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, and the 2023 attacks by the Houthis on shipping lanes in the Red Sea were direct challenges to efforts to secure alternative export routes.

 

The US-Israeli war against Iran in March was a sobering reminder to the global economy that the world had long neglected one of its most critical chokepoints.

 

Iran managed to wipe out trillions of dollarsfrom global markets by closing the Strait and added inflationary pressure to economies already under strain.

 

Theprice of securing the Strait was now much higherthan the price of alternative projects would have been if they had been taken seriously.

 

Alternative routes were a partial answerat that time,but now they are no answer at all. During the US-Iran war, the region began to realize that a lasting solution lies not in infrastructure, but in a new regional security framework that limits the weaponization of the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump is considering resuming limited military strikes on Iran following the collapse of US-Iran talks, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing officials and people familiar with the deliberations.

 

According to the report,the option under discussion would involve targeted strikes rather than a broader military campaign, aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran.

Oil and gas sales from Iran are under international sanction and not supposed to be taking place. However, oil and gas sales from Iran -violating the sanctions- have been taking place.

 

CENTCOM is announcing that the U.S. military will now ensure the oil and gas from Iran doesn’t move.

 

The U.S. will physically enforce the pre-existing global sanctions. A blockade begins tomorrow morning.

 

• TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces will begin implementing a blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on April 13 at 10 a.m. ET, in accordance with the President’s proclamation.

 

The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian portsand coastal areas,including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports.

 

Additional information will be provided to commercial mariners through a formal notice prior to the start of the blockade.

Sources familiar with the matter told Iran International thatUAE authorities detained dozens of money changers tied to financial entities linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, shut down associated companies and closed their offices.

 

The crackdownfollows days of mounting regional tensionsand comes after other measures targeting Iranian nationals,including visa revocations and tighter travel restrictions through Dubai.

 

For years,Dubai has served as Iran’s main offshore financial artery, where oil proceeds, petrochemical revenues and rial conversions were turned into dollars, dirhams and euros beyond the reach of the country’s battered domestic banking system.

 

“This is going to be a real problem for Tehran because Dubai was an economic lung for the Iranian regime,” Jason Brodsky of United Against Nuclear Iran told Iran International.

The ceasefire in the US-Israeli war on Iran eased global oil markets and may finally reopen the Strait of Hormuz. But for Iran, the truce exposes an economic crisis the war had temporarily masked, with weaker fundamentals and fewer tools to respond.

 

The ceasefire announced on April 7 has offered temporary relief to the United States and, by extension, the global economy. Oil prices have since fallen below $100 per barrel, the Strait of Hormuz may finally reopen, and global stock markets have rallied, recovering part of the losses recorded over the previous 40 days.

 

The coming days may prove crucial for stabilizing seasonal supply chains, particularly for fertilizer inputs transiting the strait during the peak planting period in the Northern Hemisphere.

 

Inside Iran, however, the outlook is far more complex.

 

The war effectively froze Iran's economic crises, shuttered markets, and halted price discovery. A similar pattern followed the 12-day conflict earlier in the war, when markets closed temporarily before reopening to renewed upward pressure as underlying imbalances reasserted themselves. This time, the damage is far greater.

 

During US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s strategic infrastructure, attacks on Mahshahr and Asaluyehpetrochemical facilities hit sites Iranian officials say account for 85% of the country’s petrochemical export capacity.

 

The steel industry was also hit.

 

Since these sectors supply downstream industries from plastics to automotive manufacturing and construction, the full scale of disruption has yet to be assessed.

 

The Tehran Stock Exchange has been closed for more than 40 consecutive days.

 

The head of the Securities and Exchange Organization has indicated that war-damaged companies will return to trading at a later stage, meaning that even if the exchange reopens, a significant portion of major firms may remain inactive.

 

Reopening without viable export-oriented companies could trigger heavy selling pressure in a market where banks and automakers are already loss-making and reliant on state support.

 

Inflation remains the most pressing crisis. Before the US-Israeli airstrikes, annual inflation had surpassed 70 percent — the highest since World War II. Food inflation reached triple digits, with bread and grains rising by 140 percent and cooking oil by more than 200 percent.

 

The war temporarily suppressed these pressures: demand fell amid unemployment, banking disruptions reduced the velocity of money, and property and automobile transactions slowed sharply.

 

With the Pakistani-brokered ceasefire, that suppressed demand is likely to return.

The ceasefire offered the world a reprieve. For Iran, it removed the only thing suppressing a crisis that had been building for months. When markets reopen, they will price in not only pre-war imbalances but the destruction of the export capacity that once generated foreign currency.

 

The rial will face a market that has every reason to reprice it sharply downward, and a state with fewer tools than ever to intervene.Iran's economy has not returned to its pre-war condition. It has moved past it.

 

Yet the ceasefire itself is fragile, reportedly violated several times within its first 48 hours.Even in the best-case diplomatic scenario, the technology and capital required for reconstruction will not materialize within weeks, and as long as the risk of renewed conflict remains,investors are unlikely to commit long-term capital.

 

What comes next at the negotiating table will shape whether any of it matters.

I honestly thought this map was made up

 

Hundreds of supertankers, the kind that carry two million barrels each, are currently racing toward the US Gulf Coast from every direction. Atlantic, Indian Ocean, around Africa, the scenic route, the "we were heading to Saudi Arabia but NVM" route.

 

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz and everyone panicked. Oil hit $126 a barrel. Gas hit $4 a gallon. Cable news did the thing where they put a red banner on screen and say "CRISIS" in a font that suggests you should be hoarding toilet paper.

 

And then something happened that nobody in media seems interested in reporting, for obvious reasons. The world just… switched suppliers? Like changing your internet provider except the internet provider is the entire effing global energy economy.

 

American oil exports are approaching record levels. Gulf Coast refineries are running at 95% capacity. Supertankers that were mid-ocean on their way to the Persian Gulf literally turned around and headed to Texas. That's not a metaphor. Ship tracking data shows them doing U-turns in the Indian Ocean.

 

Meanwhile China, which was getting 45% of its oil imports through Hormuz and paying basement prices for sanctioned Iranian crude, is now competing with Japan and Europe for the same expensive American barrels. Chinese manufacturers are already raising prices 20% on goods headed to the US.

 

So to summarize: Iran played its biggest card and the main result is that the United States became the world's emergency gas station and China's cheap energy subsidy evaporated.

 

This is either the most elaborate coincidence in the history of geopolitics… or someone planned the sequence Venezuela -Iran -> profits!
