US plans to indict Cuba's Raul Castro, DOJ official says

 

May 14 (Reuters) - The United States plans to indict Cuba's Raul Castro, a U.S. Department of Justice official said late on Thursday.

 

The timing ‌of the potential indictment, which would need to be approved by a grand ‌jury, was not immediately clear, but the official said it sounds imminent.

 

The potential indictment of the 94-year-old former ​president of Cuba and brother of Fidel is expected to focus on the downing of aircraft, the official said on condition of anonymity.

 

CBS previously reported that the case relates to Cuba's deadly 1996 shootdown of planes operated by humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.

 

Representatives for Cuba's foreign ‌ministry did not immediately respond ⁠to a request for comment outside of normal business hours. A U.S. Justice Department spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for ⁠comment.

 

The development comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Havana. The Trump administration has described Cuba's current communist-run government as corrupt and incompetent and is pushing for a regime change.

 

President Donald Trump ​has heaped ​pressure on the island, effectively imposing a blockade ​by threatening sanctions on countries supplying ‌it with fuel, igniting power outages and delivering blows to its economy.

 

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida has been overseeing an effort to examine potential criminal charges against senior Cuban government officials.

 

However, on Thursday, the Cuban government confirmed it had ​met with CIA chief John Ratcliffe.

 

Ratcliffe told intelligence officials ​in Cuba that the U.S. was ​prepared to engage on economic security issues if Cuba makes "fundamental changes," ‌a CIA official said.

 

The United States has ​previously used criminal cases ​against foreign political figures to justify military actions.

 

In January, when the U.S. military attacked Venezuela, the Trump administration described the raid as a "law enforcement operation" to bring ​Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro to ‌New York to face criminal charges.

 

Trump in March threatened that Cuba "is next" after ​Venezuela.

Comet R3 PanSTARRS might be best remembered as an Orion comet. A key reason is because Comet C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) was near its most spectacular in terms of tail visibility when passing in front of the iconic constellation. Although rare, other bright comets, too, have ventured across Orion, including Lovejoy in 2015, Hale-Bopp in 1997, and the Great Comet of 1264. Best visible in long duration exposures, the featured image was captured last week from the Craigieburn Mountain Range in New Zealand. Visible in the deep background image are the Orion Nebula, Barnard's Loop, and through R3's tail, the bright star Saiph, the sixth brightest star in the constellation of Orion. Comet R3 PanSTARRS continues to fade as it moves further south, passing into the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros) in the next few days.

U.S. moving to indict Cuba's Raúl Castro, sources say.

The U.S. is taking steps to indict Raúl Castro, the 94-year-old former president of Cuba and brother of Fidel,in connection with the downing of planes 30 years ago, according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter.

 

The potential indictment — which would need to be approved by a grand jury — isexpected to focus on Cuba's deadly 1996 shootdown of planes operated by humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue.

 

A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment.

 

The plan comes as the U.S. heaps pressure on the Cuban government. The Trump administration has threatened heavy tariffs on any country that exports oil to Cuba, leading to energy shortages as oil shipments are largely cut off. President Trump has pressed for major reforms in Cuba and has floated a "friendly takeover" of the country.

 

The pressure on Cuba began to pick up in January, after the U.S. military removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power and flew him to New York to face drug charges. Venezuela was a key partner of Cuba's before the operation.

 

Raúl Castro formally stepped down as the leader of Cuba's Communist Party in 2021, but he is still widely seen as one of the most powerful figures in the country. His grandson Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, known as "Raulito," is viewed as both a representative of the 94-year-old and a key point of contact between the U.S. and Cuba.

Miami's top federal prosecutor several months ago spearheaded a new initiative targeting Cuban communist leaders. That initiative, which involves federal and local law enforcement and theU.S. Treasury Department, is pursuing prosecutions involving economic crimes, drugs, violent crimes and immigration-related violations, with a focus ontargeting those in the Communist Party leadership, CBS News previously reported.

 

The incident that could ultimately lead to Castro's indictment dates back to February 1996, when two Cessnas operated by Brothers to the Rescue — anexile group that searched for Cubans seeking to flee the island on rafts — were shot down by a Cuban MiG-29 fighter jet, killing four people.

 

A report by the Organization of American States found theplanes were shot down outside Cuban airspace, and alleged thatCuba violated international law by shooting without warningand without evidence that it was necessary. The incident drew outrage at the time, with President Bill Cinton condemning it "in the strongest possible terms.”

 

Cuban officials have argued the shootdown was legitimate, claiming the group had violated Cuban airspace and sought to carry out acts of sabotage on infrastructure.

 

Fidel Castro told "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather the Cuban military was acting on his "general orders" to stop planes from encroaching on the country. At the time of the Brothers to the Rescue shootdown, Fidel — who died in 2016 — was the country's leader, and Raúl led the armed forces.

 

One person, Gerardo Hernandez, was convicted in the U.S. of murder conspiracy in connection with the shootdown, after federal prosecutors alleged he was part of a spy ring that sought to pass on information about Brothers to the Rescue to the Cuban intelligence service. He was sentenced to life in prison, but was sent to Cuba in a 2014 prisoner swap.

 

Earlier this year, Florida's attorney general said at a news conference in Marchthat he was re-opening a shuttered state investigation into the same 1996 plane incident.

 

Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott and other Florida lawmakers have also recently called on the Justice Department to charge Castro and bring him to justice in the United States.

 

In a social media post Thursday evening in response to the CBS News report, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote,"Let 'er rip, it's been a long time coming!"

CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Havana, Cuba, on Thursday for a rare meeting with senior Cuban officials, an agency official told CBS News, using the visit to deliver a message that the U.S. was prepared to expand economic and security engagement with Cuba if Havana "makes fundamental changes."

 

The meeting came as Cuba is contending with a massive power failure to its national energy grid amid U.S. sanctions that have caused an oil and gas shortage crisis to the island nation.

 

Ratcliffe met with Raúl Rodriguez Castro — the grandson of former Cuban President Raúl Castro.

 

Multiple U.S. officials later confirmed to CBS News Thursdaythat the U.S. is taking steps to indict the 94-year-old Raúl Castro in connection with Cuba's deadly 1996 shootdown of planesoperated by humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. Raúl Castro is the brother of Fidel Castro.

 

Also in Thursday'smeeting were Cuban Interior Minister Lazaro Alvarez Casas and the head of Cuba's intelligence services, the CIA official said, adding the group"discussed intelligence cooperation, economic stability, and security issues, all against thebackdrop that Cuba can no longer be a safe haven for adversariesin the Western Hemisphere."

 

Ratcliffe told Cuban leadersthe administration was offering "a genuine opportunity for collaboration" and a chance to stabilize Cuba's struggling economy, while cautioning that the opportunity would not remain open indefinitely and theadministration would enforce "red lines" if necessary, the official said.

 

The meeting in Havana follows a series of public comments from President Trump that talks with Cuba were imminent. Earlier this week, Mr. Trump said"Cuba is asking for help," and indicated talks would begin "at the right time."

 

Cuban officials publicly confirmed Thursday's meeting, characterizing it as part of efforts tomaintain political dialoguedespite what Havana called "complex bilateral relations."

 

Cuban state media said officials had sought to convince the U.S. delegation that Cuba does not threaten American national security andshould be removed from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

 

Earlier this week, the State Departmentrenewed an offer to provide an additional $100 million in direct humanitarian aidto the Cuban people through the Catholic Church and other independent groups, saying the assistance could move forward if Havana permitted it. Secretary of State MarcoRubio accused Cuba's government of blocking aid and refusing offers of support, including satellite internet access, amid the island's deepening economic crisis.

 

Cuban authorities said the island nation's national energy grid suffered a major failure early Thursday that severed power to the island's eastern provinces. Cuba'sleaders have said they would accept the aid as long as it comes "in full conformity with the universally recognized practices for humanitarian assistance."

 

In January, Ratcliffe traveled to Caracas to meet with Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodríguez, marking the first Cabinet-level U.S. visit since the American operation that removed former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

 

U.S. officials at the time saidRatcliffe carried a message from Mr. Trump that Washington was open to an "improved working relationship," whilewarning Venezuela could no longer serve as a haven for narcotraffickers and other U.S. adversaries.

Bill to Ban Terrorists’ Family Members from Living in U.S. Introduced by Sen. Cotton

A bill that would revoke existing visas from the close family members of terrorists and prohibit future ones from being obtained has been introduced by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) following reports that Iranian regime officer Qasem Soleimani’s niece and grandniece were legally living in the U.S.

 

While the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) arrested both the niece and grandniece of the notorious Iranian general in April, the agency revealed that 47-year-old Hamideh Soleimani Afshar and 25-year-old Sarinasadat Hosseiny had both been granted asylum by immigration judges in 2019.

 

Despite claiming “asylum” status, the elder niece filed a naturalization application in July 2025 in which she disclosed that she traveled back to Iran at least four times since being issued a green card, DHS said.

 

Soleimani was killed in January 2020 by a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad International Airport.

 

On Thursday, Cotton introduced the “No Safe Haven for Terrorist Families Act,” which would end the allowance for close relatives of such terrorist figures to live in the U.S.

 

The bill’s text outlines a new, permanent ground of inadmissibility that prevents spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews of dangerous foreign adversaries from receiving any American visa or otherwise being allowed to move to the country.

 

If the bill passes, it would also require the secretary of state to revoke any existing visa held by one of the aforementioned family members within 30 days of discovering their inadmissible status.

 

“Relatives of terrorists have no business being in our country,” Cotton said in an exclusive quote to Breitbart News. “My bill would revoke visas from family members of terrorists to keep Arkansans safer.”

US Sells 30-Year Bonds at 5 Percent Yield for First Time Since 2007

Energy-price shocks, inflation fears, and rising deficits are rattling global bond markets from Washington to Tokyo and London.

 

The U.S. federal government has sold 30-year debt at auction at a yield above 5 percent for the first time since 2007.

The Treasury Department sold $25 billion of new 30-year bonds on May 13, with the auction yield reaching 5.046 percent.

Treasury bond yields represent the return investors receive for lending to the U.S. government over different periods. They move in the opposite direction to prices, meaning higher yields usually reflect falling bond prices or investors demanding a better return to buy the debt.

The auction was part of the Treasury’s wider May refunding plan. On May 6, the Treasury said it would sell $58 billion in three-year notes, $42 billion in 10-year notes, and $25 billion in 30-year bonds, while raising $41.7 billion in new cash from private investors.

The rise in borrowing costs has been driven partly by an energy shock linked to the Iran war, which has lifted inflation and reduced expectations that the Federal Reserve will soon be able to cut interest rates.

On May 11, a host of global brokerages recast their projections for U.S. rate cuts in 2026, as the 10-week-old Middle East war has pushed energy prices higher.

“Global yields have probably come to the point where they are high enough to hurt sentiment. Between a resilient global economy powered by AI build-out and elevated energy prices, central banks are probably more worried about inflation,” DBS Bank senior rates strategist Eugene Leow said on May 15.

Daniel von Ahlen, senior macro strategist at GlobalData TS Lombard, said on May 15 that we are seeing “a reset of this global bond risk premium because the market is just realising we’re living in a much more volatile inflation climate.”

In a May 13 post on X, Jim Bianco, president and macro strategist at Bianco Research, said the U.S. 30-year yield was “now 5.03 percent.”

“It has only been higher for a handful of days in the last 19 years. And it is now just 8 basis points from a new 19-year high,” he said.

The pressure has not been limited to the United States.

Investors are reassessing inflation, interest rates, and Japan’s government borrowing needs.

Japan’s 10-year government bond yield hit its highest level since May 1997, according to Jiji Press, which cited Japan Bond Trading Co.

“Against a backdrop of market wariness over fiscal expansion and other factors, the long-term interest rate could reach 3 percent within this year,” Katsutoshi Inadome, senior strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management Co., told the publication on May 15.

Jiji said Japan’s bond market was also weighed down by concerns about accelerating inflation, as the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is expected to persist.

German and Italian bonds also came under pressure in early European trading.

Italian 10-year yields rose almost 11 basis points to around 3.89 percent, bringing the rise for the week to nearly 16 basis points. Benchmark German Bund yields climbed almost 7 basis points to around 3.12 percent.

In the UK, 10-year gilt yields hit their highest level since July 2008, reaching 5.137 percent amid political uncertainty and global inflation, raising concerns in London.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership has come under pressure after Labour suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections last week, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK made sweeping gains.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is weighing up a possible leadership challenge, unsettling investors.

“A process involving Burnham promises to be more protracted and ‘noisy’, thereby ​prolonging and exacerbating the uncertainty about the political situation in the UK,” AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould said on May 15.

First lady Melania Trump announced Friday that she and Russian President Vladimir Putin have had an "open channel of communication" regarding children impacted by the Russian-Ukraine war.

"We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war," she said in brief remarks delivered from the Grand Foyer of the White House.

"In fact, eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours," she added.

The first lady had written a letter to Putin stating it was time to protect the children impacted by the yearslong war, which was hand-delivered by President Donald Trump when he met with the Russian leader in Alaska in August.

"He responded in writing, signaling a willingness to engage with me directly and outlining details regarding the Ukrainian children residing in Russia," she said on Friday.

Melania Trump said her representative has been working directly with Putin's team on reunification of children separated from their families as the conflict continues.

"Russia has demonstrated a willingness to disclose objective and detailed information reflective for the current situation," she said.

The first lady also said she was provided a "detailed report" about the eight children who were reunited and the U.S. government-confirmed facts contained in the documents.

"This is an important initiative for me. It is built on shared purpose and lasting impact," she said, adding that plans are "underway" to reunify more children in the near future.

"A child's soul knows no borders, no flags," she said. "We must foster a future for our children which is rich with potential, security and complete with free will. A world where dreams will be realized rather than faded by war."

First Lady Melania Trump says Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to her letter of concern about the child victims of the Russia-Ukraine war.

She made the announcement on Friday, saying that after an "open channel of communication" with Putin, Ukranian children displaced in the war had been reunited with families.

 

The First Lady's "peace letter" was hand delivered to Putin during his Alaska visit in August.

 

President Donald Trump shared parts of the letter on social media. In it, the first lady pleads with Putin to protect children, writing that doing so "will do more than serve Russia alone" and "will serve humanity itself".

 

"Eight children have been rejoined with their families during the past 24 hours," Mrs Trump said, flanked by American flags behind a podium in the White House.

"Each child has lived in turmoil because of the war in Ukraine."

 

Of the eight children, the First Lady said three separated from their families were displaced to Russia because of front-line fighting.

 

Another young girl displaced by the conflict has now been returned from Ukraine to Russia, Mrs Trump says.

The children's reunification with their families was facilitated by both Ukraine and Russia, the First Lady said, adding that she was given a detailed report with photographs and the "identities and circumstances" of each child.

The US government "confirmed the facts", she said.

 

Mrs Trump said she has "learned a lot about this matter" since her letter was first handed to Putin. She said he responded in writing.

 

In her letter, the First Lady wrote: "Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart… They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger."

The announcement marks a positive development in her advocacy for children from the White House, which began during President Trump's first term.

She launched the BE BEST initiative in January 2021, which the White House describes as an awareness campaign focused around the well-being of children globally.

 

Earlier this year, the First Lady led an initiative for Congress to pass a bill banning revenge porn called the Take It Down Act. After the bill was signed, she said it was "a powerful statement that we stand united in protecting the dignity, privacy, and safety of our children".

 

According to the Ukrainian government, at least 19,500 Ukrainian children have been deported and forcibly displaced from their homes to Russia and Russian-occupied territories since February 2022.

Just 1,605 have come home so far, according to the government's Children of War database, external.

The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Children's Rights Commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, in 2023 for the alleged unlawful deportation of children.

 

Russia denies the accusation and says it has protected children by moving them from a war zone for their safety.

Strange Streak Across Missouri Sky Wasn’t a Comet or UFO

If you saw a strange large streak across the sky over Missouri late Wednesday night, you weren't imagining it. However, you also weren't witnessing a UFO, meteor or comet tail either as there's an explanation for what happened.

 

Great catch by one of my favorite YouTube channels, Missouri Skies. Dan Bush captured video near Albany, Missouri which showed what appeared to be a large streak resembling a comet's tail just after 11pm Wednesday night.

 

As you can see, Dan's explanation is spot on correct. It was nothing more than a satellite fuel dump. There's no confirmation if this was a SpaceX satellite or something else entirely.

 

This happens more often than you think. An orbiting satellite will dump fuel approximately once per week and I've heard it's even more frequent for Starlink satellites.

 

The good news is you weren't having a hallucination if you saw the streak over Missouri Wednesday night. It was just creations of man dumping their gas over our heads. Nothing more to see here.

Health officials on Friday confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in Congo's remote Ituri province, with 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths recorded so far.

 

The deaths and suspected cases have been recorded mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, the Africa Centres for Disease Control ​and Prevention, the continent's top public health body, said in a statement.

 

The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be contracted through bodily fluids such as vomit, blood or semen. The disease it causes is rare, but severe and often fatal.

 

"Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation," the agency said, referring to the capital of Ituri province, near the border with Uganda.

 

It said preliminary laboratory results have detected the virus in 13 of 20 samples tested.

 

The latest outbreak comes around five months after Congo's last Ebola outbreak was declared over after 43 deaths.

 

Concern about risk of further spread

Ituri is in a remote eastern part of Congo characterized by poor road networks, and is more than 1,000 kilometres from the nation's capital of Kinshasa.

 

Africa CDC said it is concerned about the risk of further spread due to intense population movement, mining-related mobility in Mongwalu, insecurity in affected areas, gaps in contact listing and control challenges.

 

The proximity of affected areas to Uganda and South Sudan also raises concerns, it said.

 

The agency said it is convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting Friday with health authorities from Congo, Uganda and South Sudan, together with key partners including UN agencies and other countries.

 

"The meeting will focus on immediate response priorities, cross-border coordination, surveillance, laboratory support, infection prevention and control, risk communication, safe and dignified burials, and resource mobilization," it said.

Dragon Targets Friday Launch as Crew Keeps Up Science and Spacewalk Preps

SpaceX CRS-34, the next mission to resupply the International Space Station, is now targeting its launch for no earlier than 6:05 p.m. EDT on Friday, May 15.

A Falcon 9 rocket is slated to lift off from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida carrying a cargo-packed Dragon spacecraft to Earth orbit.

Dragon will deliver about 6,500 pounds of science experiments, crew supplies, and lab hardware for the Expedition 74 crew when it docks to the Harmony module’s forward port at approximately 7 a.m. Sunday, May 17.

 

Meanwhile, the seven-member crew aboard the orbital outpost stayed focused on microgravity research and lab maintenance throughout Thursday. The orbital residents are also gearing up for a spacewalk later this month.

NASA flight engineer Jessica Meir was on space botany duty watering and photographing alfalfa plants growing inside the Columbus laboratory module’s Veggie facility for the Veg-06 study.

The space agriculture study is exploring plant-microbe interactions to help plants thrive in microgravity and promote food production off the Earth.

 

Flight engineer Sophie Adenot from ESA (European Space Agency) spent her day setting up an incubator for installation inside the KERMIT fluorescent microscope.

Adenot tested the functionality of the scientific hardware ahead of future imaging sessions. KERMIT enables astronauts and ground scientists to conduct manual and remote imaging of biological, physical, and material research samples.

 

NASA flight engineers Chris Williams and Jack Hathaway worked throughout Thursday on a variety of maintenance and cargo tasks.

Williams checked out and activated batteries on portable gas detection devices then tested the performance of pistol grip tools spacewalkers use during external assembly tasks.

Hathaway replaced an oxygen sensor in the Quest airlock, continued unpacking supplies from the Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft, and swapped out drinking water filters inside the Unity module.

 

Station commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and flight engineer Sergey Mikaev, both from Roscosmos, spent their shift gathering and inspecting tools to be used on a spacewalk planned for later this month.

Roscosmos flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev worked inside the Nauka science module replacing laptop computer batteries that support the operation of the European robotic arm.

NASA, Industry Prepare Cryogenic Fuel Technology Demo

NASA is collaborating with Eta Space of Rockledge, Florida, on an in‑orbit technology demonstration to advance a key capability for future deep space missions.

The Liquid Oxygen Flight Demonstration, or LOXSAT, will test cryogenic fluid management technologies necessary for creating in-space propellant depots, essentially gas stations in space, that could support long-term exploration.

 

During a nine-month mission, LOXSAT will demonstrate 11 cryogenic fluid management technologies. Eta Space built LOXSAT as part of a NASA Tipping Point opportunity, and Rocket Lab is providing spacecraft and launch services to deliver it to low Earth orbit.

The LOXSAT payload has been integrated with a Rocket Lab Photon satellite bus and will launch aboard the company’s Electron rocket from Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula no earlier than July 17.

 

The technologies that LOXSAT will demonstrate were selected to address the core challenges of using cryogenic, or super-cold, propellants in microgravity, including reducing boiloff, transferring propellant, maintaining tank pressure, and gauging propellant levels.

Data collected from these tests will support development of future in-space propellant depots that could refuel spacecraft as they journey to the Moon, Mars, or other deep space destinations.

 

NASA’s LOXSAT team is composed of members of the Cryogenic Fluid Management Portfolio Project from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, and Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The cryogenic portfolio’s work is part of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate and includes more than 20 individual technology development activities.

Hubble Sights Galaxy in Transition

This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image reveals an enigmatic galaxy with a bright center and a face that hints at spiral structure, yet it holds no obvious spiral arms.

Reddish-brown clumps and filaments of dust partially obscure the galaxy’s full face, while red, blue, and orange light from distant galaxies shines through its diffuse outer regions and dots the inky-black background.

 

NGC 1266 is a lenticular galaxy located some 100 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus (the Celestial River).

Astronomers classify lenticulars as transitional galaxies that represent an evolutionary bridge between spirals and ellipticals.

Lenticulars are “lens-shaped” and have a bright central bulge and flattened disk like spirals, but they have no spiral arms and little to no star formation like ellipticals.

 

As interesting as this galaxy’s structure and lenticular classification are, those traits aren’t its most intriguing features. NGC 1266 is a rare post-starburst galaxy that is in transition between a galaxy that experienced a major burst of star formation and a quieter elliptical galaxy.

Post-starburst galaxies have a young population of stars but few star-forming regions. Roughly one percent of the local galaxy population is a post-starburst galaxy.

 

Astronomers think that NGC 1266 had a minor merger with another galaxy some 500 million years ago. The merger spurred the formation of new stars and increased the mass of the galaxy's central bulge while funneling gas into its supermassive black hole.

The additional matter made the black hole much more active, creating an active galactic nucleus or AGN. The black hole’s increased activity would have generated powerful winds and jets of gas along its axis of rotation.

Over time, the burst of new stars and the black hole’s powerful jets would deplete the galaxy’s reservoir of star-forming gas, while the turbulence generated in these processes suppressed new stars from forming in the gas that remained.

 

Observations by Hubble and other observatories reveal a strong outflow of gas from the galaxy and that the space between its stars is shocked or highly disturbed.

Researchers found that any remaining stellar nurseries are in the core of the galaxy, and that very little to no star formation happens beyond that core.

These observations suggest the supermassive black hole in the galaxy’s heart may be suppressing star birth by stripping or ejecting star-forming gas from the galaxy.

The shockwaves from this process would create turbulence that disturbs the gas and dust between stars enough to stop any remaining matter from gravitationally condensing into infant stars.

 

Post-starburst galaxies like NGC 1266 are ideal subjects for astronomers to study the complex physical processes that suppress star formation.

They help us better understand the evolution of galaxies and how supermassive black holes interact with their hosts.

SpaceX is targeting Friday, May 15, for Falcon 9’s launch of Dragon’s 34th Commercial Resupply Services (CRS-34) mission for NASA to the International Space Station from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

 

Liftoff is targeted for 6:05 p.m. ET.

CRS-34 is the sixth flight of the Dragon spacecraft supporting this mission, which previously flew CRS-22, CRS-24, CRS-27, CRS-30, and CRS-32 to and from the space station.

 

After an approximate 36-hour flight, Dragon will autonomously dock with the orbiting laboratory on Sunday, May 17, at around 7:00 a.m. ET.

Eleven Indicted on State Charges in Theft Conspiracy Case Involving Knox County Sheriff’s Office Personnel

 

KNOX COUNTY – A joint investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment of several current and former employees of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

 

Last year, TBI agents began working alongside the FBI to review evidence gathered during a federal investigation launched in 2019 that centered around allegations of theft by nearly a dozen of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) Narcotics Unit and Special Investigations Unit (SIU). During the investigation, FBI agents gathered evidence alleging that numerous individuals used a KCSO Narcotics Unit credit card to purchase items for personal use, including electronics, hunting equipment, and home renovation materials. The alleged purchases, made between 2010 and 2018, totaled well over $300,000. Investigators also learned that more than $30,000 in cash seized during undercover drug investigations was allegedly spent on personal expenses. Additionally, agents gathered evidence alleging that individuals assigned to the KCSO Narcotics Unit and the SIU performed a variety of personal tasks while on duty using county-owned vehicles and equipment. Those tasks included restoring classic cars, home renovations, and construction-related projects.

In a proclamation describing law enforcement’s essential role in the United States of America, President John F. Kennedy wrote:

“Whereas it is important that people throughout our country know and understand the problems, duties and responsibilities of their police departments and that members of our law enforcement agencies recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence or disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression or intimidation.”

 

The U.S. Air Force Security Forces members of Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado, stand guard every day, ready to the defend the U.S. Space Force installation, its assets and its people.

Like many other law enforcement officers, these defenders remain ready and are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, to lay down their lives in the line of duty. Because of their dedication, these defenders are celebrated during National Police Week.

 

Originating in 1962, Peace Officers Memorial Day was created by congress and signed as Public Law 87-726 by President Kennedy, designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls on as National Police Week.

However, it wouldn’t be until 20 years later, in 1982, that the first Peace Officers’ Memorial Service would be held. This small gathering at Senate Park in Washington D.C, was hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police, sparking the emergence of events that would celebrate law enforcement officers for years to come.

 

“Police Week is important because it recognizes the dedication and sacrifices of Security Forces members,” said Senior Airmen Giana Couch, 50th Security Forces Squadron member.

“Our career field often requires long hours, heavy gear and the ability to handle difficult situations professionally. Being acknowledged for that commitment helps reinforce morale and reminds us that our efforts are valued.”

 

National Police Week serves as a chance to highlight the sacrifices made by defenders, celebrate their service and honor those who have fallen in line of duty.

While scanning common access cards at the gate and pulling over traffic offenders on base are their most outward facing jobs, Security Forces members also play a critical role in protecting mission assets.

 

“I’m responsible for ensuring personnel and mission critical resources are safeguarded,” said Tech. Sgt. Korey Evans, 50th SFS, noncommissioned officer in charge of installation security.

“I must do my job efficiently to reduce vulnerabilities before adversaries could potentially exploit them. The oversight of my job ensures the installation is meeting major command requirements while ensuring a no fail mission.”

Being a member of Security Forces, Airmen must make hard decisions, stay calm in stressful situations and have the courage to defend others. National Police Week is celebrated to display the important role these defenders play in the service of others.

 

“In the future, I hope to see greater participation from members of other career fields during Police Week events,” said Couch.

“Increased involvement would give them a better understanding of how Security Forces trains, operates and supports the broader mission, while also strengthening camaraderie across the installation.”

National Police Week allows for a brief understanding of what Security Forces members do to defend Air Force and Space Force installations and appreciation for their critical role in safeguarding the mission.

Earth from Space: Quito’s volcanic landscape

This image, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, gives us a glimpse of Ecuador’s capital, Quito, sprawling for 40 km along this high-altitude valley in the Andes.

At an elevation of 2850 m above sea level, Quito is the only capital city in the world built so close to an active volcano. It is dominated by Pichincha to the west but there are several other volcanoes near the city.

Cotopaxi, Antisana and Cayambe, with their snow-covered peaks, are clearly visible in this image. Cotopaxi is the second highest summit in the country at about 5900 m, and one of Ecuador’s most active volcanoes.

 

Quito itself, which has developed within the Guayllabamba river basin, is visible at the centre of the image. The city’s southern districts are divided by the Machángara River, a tributary of the Guayllabamba.

The Machángara flows through Quito, from south to north, meandering past one of the city’s famous landmarks, the Panecillo park. This hill provides some of the best views over Quito’s historical centre to its north.

 

The old town, distinguishable in the image due to the rosier colour of its roofs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its well-preserved architecture.

 

Quito is surrounded by rich biodiversity, from cloud forests to ecological reserves, such as the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve, visible in the image as a darker green area just north of the city.

To the east of Quito and the Guayllabamba valley, there are three national parks, covered by patches of white cloud in this image. And to the west, white clouds cover much of the view of the city of Santo Domingo in the western foothills of the Andes mountains.

 

Several regions around Quito were badly affected by drought-driven wildfire during late 2025, when this image was captured. A large plume of smoke can be seen to the east of Quito and there is a smaller plume to the north, near the Sincholagua volcano.

A burnt area can be seen in the hills east of the city, where nearly 200 hectares (about 300 football pitches) of high-altitude grassland were burned near the remote Andean community of Oyacachi, within the Cayambe Coca National Park.

SUPER EL NIÑO, IS THE TERMINATOR TO BLAME?

 

Headlines are buzzing with news that a super El Niño is forming in the Pacific Ocean. A solar physicist saw it coming 3 years ago.

 

In a 2023 paper, Robert Leamon of NASA and the University of Maryland (Baltimore County) made a striking prediction: The next El Niño would arrive in 2026. He based it on the Terminator, a magnetic event on the sun that ends one solar cycle and ignites the next.

 

Averaging the past five solar cycles into a "standard cycle" and projecting it forward, Leamon found that El Niños follow about five years after a Terminator. The most recent termination event happened in December 2021, putting the next El Niño squarely in 2026. His model says nothing about the strength of this El Niño, but the timing is spot-on.

 

Leamon and his colleague Scott McIntosh had previously shown that every Terminator since the 1960s coincided with a flip from El Niño to La Niña. Their work correctly predicted the onset of a triple-dip La Niña in 2020 and revealed an unexpected connection between the sun and the ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation).

No one knows how the sun exerts control over the ENSO. Most researchers favor "top-down" models: Solar activity alters the top of Earth's atmosphere, making changes that percolate down to affect the weather we experience near Earth's surface. But the actual mechanism is unknown.

 

At first (2021), Leamon and McIntosh thought cosmic rays were responsible. Galactic cosmic rays vary with the solar cycle, and they influence the ionization of Earth's atmosphere. But later (2023) Leamon himself weighed in against cosmic rays, noting that the timing didn't work. He currently favors a correlation with geomagnetic activity.

 

The search for a sun-El Niño connection is as old as El Niño itself. Sir Gilbert Walker, who discovered the "Southern Oscillation" (the SO in ENSO) in the early 1900s, tried and failed to find a link to sunspots. Throughout the 20th century, other researchers likewise struggled to make the connection. The Terminator, however, is a new concept articulated by McIntosh and Leamon in a series of papers starting 10 years ago. It seems to do a good job of predicting solar cycles and may be successful with ENSO as well.

 

It will take more than 1 or 2 successful predictions to build confidence in this model, but it's a good start. Let the El Niño begin.

It was ultimately revealed that Lord Mandelson’s connection toEpstein was even closer than initially stated, resulting in his dismissal in September 2025. It was further revealed that United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) had advised against his selection, and that the Prime Minister’s office had pressured the Foreign Office to accept the appointment regardless.

This week, a growing number of Labour Members of Parliament (MPs) have called on Starmer to resign. Wes Streeting, the now-former Health Secretary, resigned earlier this week, criticizing the Prime Minister’s lack of leadership.

Soon after, the Labour Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, announced his intention to stand in an upcoming by-election (special election) for a seat in Parliament, which would allow him to challenge Starmer for the party leadership.

Charles James Kirk (October 14, 1993 – September 10, 2025) was an American right-wing political activist, author, and media personality. He co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012 and was its executive director. He was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Turning Point Action (TPAction) and a member of the Council for National Policy (CNP). The Washington Post described him as "one of the most prominent voices on the right" in his later years.[2]

 

Kirk was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs of Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights, Illinois. In high school, Kirk actively engaged in politics, supporting Republican candidateMark Kirk(no relation) and his U.S. Senate campaign. He briefly attended Harper College before dropping out to pursue political activism full-time, influenced by Tea Party member Bill Montgomery. In 2012, Kirk founded TPUSA, a conservative student organization that quickly grew with backing from donors likeFoster Friess.

In addition to Santorum's faith, opposition to women’s abortion rights, and hawkish foreign policy leanings, the possibility of defeating incumbent President Barack Obama was a major component of Friess's decision to back Santorum's campaign.[27] Friess reportedly considered major contributions to American Crossroads, the super PAC founded by Republican National Committee chair Ed Gillespie and formerGeorge W. Bush White House strategist Karl Rove.[28][29]

 

Friess also donated $100,000 to Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker to help defeat the Democrats' recall effort in 2011. He reportedly invested more than $3 million in conservative commentatorTucker Carlson'sThe Daily Caller website.[22] At one of the semi-annual, private seminars held by the Koch brothers in June 2011, Friess was recognized for his donation exceeding $1 million to theKochs'political activities.[30]

 

While being interviewed by NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell regarding contraception, Friess said, "And this contraceptive thing, my gosh, it's so – it's such – inexpensive, you know, back in my days, they used Bayer Aspirin for contraception. The gals put it between their knees and it wasn't that costly."[25][31] Friess later apologized for the comment. [32]

 

Friess was also an advisor to Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization to which he donated seed money.[33]

 

In October 2017, Friess said he was exploring a possible candidacy for the Senate challenging Wyoming Senator John Barrasso for the Republican nomination,[34] at the request ofSteve Bannon.[35] However, in April 2018, he instead decided to enter the crowded Republican field to replace term-limited Governor Matt Mead. Friess was defeated in the primary, coming in second to State Treasurer Mark Gordon by 38,951 votes (33%) to 29,842 (25.3%).[35]

Kirk was born in Champaign, Illinois, the son of Judith Ann (Brady) and Francis Gabriel "Frank" Kirk.[7][8] After graduating from New Trier East High School in 1977 he attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, for two years, before briefly attending the Autonomous University of Mexico[9] and subsequently transferring to Cornell University, where he graduated cum laude with a B.A. in History.[10] While at Cornell University, Kirk served as the president of The Seal and Serpent Society.[11] Kirk later obtained a master's degree from the London School of Economics and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) fromGeorgetown University Law Center.[12][13]

 

Tenure During his time in the House, Kirk compiled a centrist voting record, tending to vote more liberally on social issues and more conservatively on foreign policy issues.[17]
