Daughters of American Revolution assembly defeats proposal to block transgender members

The Daughters of the American Revolution beat back a membership uprising over transgender membership, rejecting a resolution that would have barred male-born candidates from being admitted to the venerable women’s patriotic organization.

DAR members defeated the resolution, which would have clarified that applicants must be “born female” to be eligible for membership, at a Friday vote of the 135th Continental Congress at Memorial Continental Hall in the District.

Introduced by a cohort of members known as Daughters Advocating for Restoration, the proposal lost by a 1,481-984 vote of the assembly, according to Laura McDonald, a leader of the resistance group and treasurer of the DAR’s Martha Laird Chapter in Mount Pleasant, Texas.

“Today the Daughters of the American Revolution, whose motto is ‘God, Home and Country,’ voted to reject a resolution that seeks to define the word ‘woman’ in our National Bylaws,” Ms. McDonald said in a statement to The Washington Times.

“While admitting men with amended birth certificates is still a violation of the bylaws, I do believe the will of the assembly was heard today,” she said. “We don’t know what the future holds or what God’s plan is, but we do know He has a plan and we trust Him.”

Membership is limited towomen18 and older descended from an ancestor who aided the American Revolution. Still, the president-general said in 2023 that “transgender women” are eligible under the group’s nondiscrimination policy.

An estimated five male-to-female transgender candidates have joined DAR chapters in recent years, spurring thousands of resignations and an internal battle over whether “daughters” include biological males who identify as women.

Cheering the outcome were members ofDaughters for Inclusivity, a counter-group of DAR members in support of “welcoming all women” and the principle that “trans women are women.”

“Thankfully, the Resolution did not pass,” Joy Abshire Laws wrote on the Daughters for Inclusivity page on Facebook. “There is no place for discrimination in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Thank you to the delegates who persevered through a long and grueling vote and chose a path of inclusion, respect, and unity. Now it’s time to move forward together.”

Samba had been specially lined up for a targeted reentry safely over the South Pacific Ocean, with the precision so high that a plane could fly out from Tonga and successfully record its demise for reentry science.

Following its targeted reentry on 31 August, Samba (Cluster II FM-7), the third of ESA's four Cluster satellites, was successfully observed by the ROSIE airborne mission 2026.

The ROSIE reentry observation team acquired the image at Station 3 with a Nikon Z8 camera operated by University of Stuttgart (HEFDiG).

This reentry image was made with a so-called tracking camera, used to confirm that Samba is where it is supposed to be. It shows the surroundings, providing context such as the state of fragmentation and relative positioning of the fragments.

It is complemented by other instruments that look for the presence of specific materials in the same field of view. This then helps the scientists identify which part of the spacecraft we are looking on their quest to understand how the demise takes place exactly.

Her remarks came after German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced new measures against Russia, which they linked to the August 4 incident.

The measures include closing the Russian Consulate General in Bonn from September 18 and terminating the lease of the Russian House in Berlin. Germany will also tighten border controls for Russian nationals, draw up a new list of individuals for EU sanctions, and increase pressure on what Berlin calls Russia’s “shadow fleet.”

According to Dobrindt, the measures were agreed after the German government concluded that Russia was “the perpetrator” behind the early-August incident, in which an explosive-laden drone was found lying between Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes on the apron at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

Germany has “failed to present any even remotely convincing or serious evidence” of Russian involvement, Zakharova said on Telegram on Tuesday. “There is none and there cannot be any,” she added.

Zakharova argued that German authorities had long sought to target both the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin, and had now come up with an “absolutely trumped-up and far-fetched” pretext to further damage bilateral relations.

Berlin “will get a fitting response,” she warned.

Zakharova also took aim at the timing of Berlin’s announcement, noting that it came on September 1 – the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939.

She questioned whether German officials had chosen the date out of “stupidity and ignorance” or were “literally announcing a return to their roots” and “ritually demonstrating their intentions.”

“On September 1, 1939, Germany unleashed World War II and, together with the countries of the Hitlerite Axis, killed 70 million people, 27 million of them ours,” Zakharova said.

According to The Daily Mail, Guerriero’s father said the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s death are still a mystery.

“We really don’t know yet. We’re waiting to get access to the autopsy report. I believe they’re going to issue a death certificate within the next day so we can get her home and have her put to rest,” William Guerriero told The Daily Mail.

Eduardo Teodorani. The Italian businessman was mentioned extensively in files released by the DOJ, indicating a years-long relationship with Epstein.

Jean-Luc Brunel. The French modeling scout was among Epstein’s better-known associates. Japan's National Space Policy Secretariat and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration signed a memorandum of cooperation on Monday, also aimed at streamlining regulations and intensifying information sharing.

"We would like to build a system adaptable to space business, which is widely expanding in a variety of forms," said Takatsugu Ryuzaki, director general of the secretariat in charge of the country's space development and utilization, after the signing.

With several spaceport projects underway in Japan, including in Kochi and Oita prefectures, the two sides will discuss guidelines for space business operators setting out specific requirements for spaceports.

In addition to rocket launches, the two security allies are considering connecting Japanese and U.S. cities via suborbital flights at an altitude of around 100 kilometers.

Last year, a Japanese travel agency said it aims to launch a point-to-point transport service in the 2030s connecting Tokyo and U.S. cities like New York in one hour.

Communities across the country spent the better part of two years fighting to tear down Flock Safety's license plate readers, and in city after city, they won. Then, in the same council chambers where residents celebrated those victories, officials quietly signed even bigger checks to a company that builds the exact same surveillance apparatus, only this time it's hidden inside the streetlight over your driveway.

Since January of this year alone, roughly 23 cities have canceled, rejected, or deactivated their Flock contracts, and close to 98 have done so since 2021, as residents raised alarms over warrantless tracking, indefinite data retention, and a vendor-run national database that agencies across the country could tap into without a warrant. Asheville, North Carolina became the latest flashpoint in late August, when its city council voted 5-2 to terminate the city's contract and order every piece of Flock hardware removed from its streets, following a marathon public comment session and a public call from the mayor herself to shut the cameras down. Lansing, Michigan followed almost the same week, with residents packing council chambers to demand an end to what one described as adjusting his daily commute just to avoid being logged by the cameras. Cleveland's safety committee, for its part, voted down a quarter-million-dollar Flock renewal outright after council members openly questioned whether the cameras made anyone safer at all.

By every surface-level measure, this looks like a movement winning. It isn't. It's a market-share transfer, and the company picking up the business is Axon, the Scottsdale, Arizona outfit better known for Tasers and police body cameras, which has spent the past year building a product engineered specifically to defeat the kind of organizing that just took Flock down. Axon calls it Lightpost, and unlike Flock's freestanding poles, it clips directly onto a streetlight that's already there, drawing power straight from the light's own socket. No new poles. No trenching. No visible object for a resident to photograph, protest, or bring to a council meeting.

Axon's own marketing describes it as a way to turn streetlights into real-time detection tools, combining license plate recognition, vehicle attribute recognition, and live streaming video into a form factor built for speed of deployment. A companion product, Axon Outpost, offers the same capability as a standalone unit that can be mounted on new or existing poles, buildings, vehicles, trailers, or even trees, and can run on solar power when no electrical hookup is available. Both feed directly into Axon Fusus, a platform that integrates footage from body cameras, squad cars, drones, and third-party cameras into a single searchable, real-time operational view for police departments.

The company building this doesn't hide the fact that blending in is the point. Ubicquia, the infrastructure firm Axon partnered with to build Lightpost, markets the devices as mounting directly on existing streetlight infrastructure and blending seamlessly into the urban landscape, while avoiding complex permitting processes altogether. That single sentence is the entire strategy laid bare. Flock's cameras became targets because they were visible, arguable, votable things sitting on a pole at an intersection. A camera hidden inside the fixture that already lights your street at night isn't something most residents will ever notice, let alone organize against, and that is by design rather than accident.

Corporate insiders have 2 business days to report a trade.

They disclose the exact shares, exact price and resulting holdings.

Congressional officials generally have up to 45 days after the trade, or 30 days after receiving notice, whichever comes first.

And they don’t have to give you the exact price.

They can report:

$1,001 to $15,000

or

$1 million to $5 million.

You can know that a senator bought Apple.

You may not know exactly when, exactly how much, or exactly what price they paid until much later.

The numbers make the difference even harder to explain.

One analysis of more than 565,000 corporate insider transactions found a median reporting lag of about 2 calendar days.

For more than 14,000 congressional transactions, the median lag was around 27 days.

And roughly 6.4% of congressional transactions were reported late.

The penalty for being late?

$200.

That’s not much of a deterrent when you’re talking about trades worth hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars.

And Congress knows there’s a problem.

The House passed H.R. 7008 by 232 to 198 on July 22, which would ban members from buying individual stocks while in office.

US President Donald Trump welcomed the presence of a senior Russian delegation at the G20, ignoring protests from EU officials who refused to appear alongside Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov in the gathering’s traditional “family photo.”

Siluanov arrived in Asheville, North Carolina for the two-day meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors on Monday at the invitation of the Trump administration.

His first in-person appearance at the forum since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022 immediately drew protests from European delegates.

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil called the decision to treat Siluanov as a regular participant a “troubling” signal.

Other EU officials reportedly threatened to boycott the photo unless the Russian official was excluded, according to the Washington Post.

Twelve people were killed and over 20 others injured, including children, as Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region early Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of strikes on the area.

Eight people were killed and ten injured in the Ukrainian capital, including three children, according to city authorities.

“Kyiv region came under a massive attack by Russian missiles and strike drones tonight,” Kyiv regional military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko said on Telegram.

Kyiv Post reporters heard around a dozen loud explosions and saw flashes in the sky late Monday, moments after Ukraine’s Air Force warned of incoming ballistic missiles, and early Tuesday morning.

The Air Force reported a “high-speed target toward Kyiv,” followed by warnings of several targets heading toward the capital, missiles approaching from the south and jet-powered drones moving in from the east.

The Air Force later warned that the threat of “ballistic weapons and other means of attack against Kyiv and the region remains in effect” and urged residents to remain in shelters.

According to updated Kyiv city military administration (KMVA) data, civilian infrastructure was damaged in five districts of Kyiv: Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi.

In the Darnytskyi district, fires broke out at two locations following the strikes. Seven people were killed there, while another person remains in serious condition in hospital. The fires have since been extinguished.

Cloud seeding has been around for decades, but a new announcement says a drone project saw a measurable success in modifying the weather.

A decades-long controversy has a new twist: Drones have caused 19 million gallons of precipitation to fall in Alaska.

The drones were used for cloud seeding, part of a long-running scientific project aiming to extract precipitation from certain clouds in areas that need more.

The latest development is notable because a private company says it was able to rapidly measure how much precipitation was caused by its efforts to modify the weather using drones.

Measuring the effectiveness of cloud seeding has been a tricky challenge over the years, and the news out of Alaska comes as interest grows in using cloud seeding to combat drought in the West.

Cloud seeding is controversial and complex. Over the years, it's generated pushback from skeptics and conspiracy theorists alike.

Ten states have banned or considered banning it, according to a 2024 Government Accountability Office report. Meanwhile, several states in the Western United States are embracing cloud seeding.

What happened in Alaska?

The news out of Alaska shows how cloud seeding plays out ‒ usually as a drizzle or a flurry, not a downpour.

The approximately 19 million gallons that fell sounds like a lot, but it was spread out over nearly 100 square miles and over three hours, according to Rainmaker founder and CEO Augustus Doricko.

Someone on the ground would have experienced at most a drizzle.

Rainmaker, a California-based private company, said in a report that it successfully measured the precipitation, which fell mostly as snow, and can directly attribute it to its cloud seeding efforts on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, over a three-hour period on Aug. 23.

It's the first time a private company has validated its efforts with methods that prove cloud seeding caused a specific amount of precipitation to fall in Alaska, said Rainmaker founder and CEO Augustus Doricko.

As extreme drought threatens water supplies, agriculture and the generation of hydroelectric power, states including Idaho, Utah and Colorado have been turning to cloud seeding in the hopes it can provide an extra nudge to generate rain and snowfall in the areas that need it most.

What is cloud seeding? Is this science fiction?

Cloud seeding is a concept that has been around for decades. It was first conceived with experiments in the 1940s and has been done in several countries around the world.

The most common type of cloud seeding used in the United States is done almost entirely in Western states, according to University of Illinois emeritus professor of climate, meteorology, and atmospheric sciences Robert Rauber.

That's because cloud seeding is mostly done with clouds that rise over mountains in the wintertime, called orographic clouds, Rauber said.

Scientists look for and identify certain types of clouds that have tiny droplets of supercooled water, which is water below 32 degrees Fahrenheit that does not turn to ice.

That's because pure water won't turn to ice until it's much colder, dozens of degrees below 0; tiny particles of other substances, such as minerals, cause water to turn to ice.

The clouds ideal for seeding have lots of supercooled water that doesn't turn into ice on its own and fall as precipitation. Without intervention, those water droplets wouldn't fall and would eventually evaporate, Rauber said.

The typical process for cloud seeding involves introducing particles such as silver iodide into the clouds, causing the water to turn to ice and fall over the mountain.

Seeding the clouds with those particles can be done from the ground or by air using airplanes, or in the case of the Rainmaker project, drones.

"What we're trying to do is get more of the cloud water to land on the mountain as snow," Rauber said.

"Why is that important? In the Western United States, snowpack is a reservoir. It's a place where water can be stored and then distributed in the spring and summer when the ice melts."

The problem with cloud seeding for a long time was that while scientists knew it worked, they were unable to prove it and measure how much precipitation was a direct result of cloud seeding, and how much would have fallen anyway.

That changed in 2017 with the Seeded and Natural Orographic Wintertime Clouds: The Idaho Experiment, or the SNOWIE project.

The SNOWIE project marked the first time researchers could validate their efforts.

Using radar and a formula, researchers proved that their seeding was producing a specific amount of precipitation, said Rauber, who is not involved with Rainmaker but who helped develop the SNOWIE project.

Cloud seeders respond to naysayers

Rainmaker is the first private company to prove how much rain they produced, Doricko said. The Rainmaker drones seeded in a particular pattern in the clouds, and the resulting snowfall was easy to spot on radar as theirs.

"We'll fly either in a specific pattern… or we'll pulse the drones, meaning we'll periodically release silver iodide and then stop," he said.

"If you see precipitation happening exclusively in your flight track or exclusively in those pulses, then you know that it's definitively manmade, if it is a replicable enough feature if you do it enough times."

Rainmaker has not been without its skeptics. The idea of weather manipulation often makes people uneasy. It's even been banned in states including Florida and Tennessee.

Rauber says much of the opposition to cloud seeding comes from ignorance of the process. There are also unfounded theories about its consequences, which Doricko has spent time on social media trying to debunk.

"I can guarantee no floods or deadly outcomes, this technology has well-characterized physical limits," he said in response to criticism from former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on X.

Deadly flooding in Texas Hill Country in July 2025 brought a wave of accusations against the company, which two days before had seeded clouds over 100 miles away to produce less than half a centimeter of rain on farmland going through drought, reported the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Scientists say it's impossible that the cloud seeding could have contributed to the flooding because cloud seeding can't impact weather that far away, and at most it would be a modest amount of additional precipitation even if it could.

Cloud seeders are very aware of the potential that their operations could be misinterpreted by the public, so they tend to avoid going anywhere near the types of clouds that could risk flooding, Rauber said.

Could cloud seeding be the answer to worsening drought?

The reason cloud seeding is more embraced in the Western United States is because of the hope it can provide aid to areas impacted by severe drought.

Ongoing drought has seen the United States' two largest reservoirs, Lake Mead and Lake Powell, reach record low levels this summer as climate change-fueled drought is lessening the amount of snow falling on the Rocky Mountains before melting into the Colorado River, which feeds the lakes holding water for drinking supply and power.

Doricko said Rainmaker plans to bring its cloud seeding to a larger scale: The Alaska demonstration, he said, "shows how Rainmaker will add new water to the Colorado River and Great Salt Lake in the coming months."

Cloud seeding alone isn't the solution to the drought crisis in the West, experts say.

"Conservation is really important; we shouldn't waste water," Doricko said.

"But if you want to maintain the ecosystems that we have, the farms and cities that we have, you have to work on the supply side. You have to innovate your way into abundance."

The Baltic Sea Anomaly has been the subject of mystery and debate for many years

When searching for treasure, there’s no knowing what you might find. This was the case for Swedish divers who stumbled across something very strange in the Baltic Sea in 2011.

While using sonar to scan the seabed, they saw a strange shape.

The scans were blurry (some experts have said the sonar was misaligned, messing with the image) so it was hard to make out what this unidentified object might be: but it was circular and around 60 metres in diameter (around the size of a Ferris wheel).

What was it? No-one knew. Perhaps because of this, media speculation went wild. People suggested that it might be a meteorite or a UFO that had crashed in the ocean and was now sitting 90 metres deep on the seabed.

Some even threw around the idea that the mythical lost city of Atlantis had finally been found.

“We need to know what we’ve found,” said Peter Lindberg, one of the treasure hunters on the Ocean X team who found the anomaly, in a press release at the time.

“Media has been speculating about everything from UFO’s to Russian spaceships. What we know at this point is its size and shape and we also know, based upon the sonar image, that there is a ridged tail going from or to the cylinder-shaped anomaly of about 3,800 feet throughout the bottom of the sea.”

The Ocean X team had been looking for hidden treasures but this probably isn’t what they’d had in mind!

Things got weirder when the divers suggested that something in the region of the object – dubbed the Baltic Sea Anomaly – was causing technology to malfunction. When they were above the anomaly, they said their electrical equipment didn’t work.

But, before you start to get excited that we’ve finally discovered proof of interstellar lifeforms, hold your horses. There’s probably a more logical explanation.

According to Live Science, Volker Brüchert, an associate professor of geology at Stockholm University (and not on the Ocean X team), “most of the samples they have brought up from the sea bottom are granites and gneisses and sandstones."

The sunken treasure brought up from the region is also said to have included a piece of basalt, which is created when lava cools and solidifies.

The basin of the Baltic Sea was carved out by glaciers during the last ice age and these rocks may be souvenirs.

“Because the whole northern Baltic region is so heavily influenced by glacial thawing processes, both the feature and the rock samples are likely to have formed in connection with glacial and postglacial processes,” Brüchert told Live Science. “Possibly these rocks were transported there by glaciers.”

Although the crashed spaceship theory has been debunked by experts, many people have remained intrigued by the Baltic Sea Anomaly over the years – after all, a spaceship is more exciting than a glacial deposit.

This isn’t the only time strange geological formations have appeared to be something else: marine researchers found what looks like a replica of the Wizard of Oz’s yellow brick road 1,000 metres deep in the Pacific Ocean.

Although it looks like something from the film set, the odd geological formation was actually created by ancient volcanic activity.

Why the difference appears

• Ligature strangulation is usually horizontal, complete, and lower on the neck (often directly over the larynx). Force is applied more directly and often for longer because of struggle.

• Typical suicidal hanging is higher, oblique, and more sliding/tangential. Many series are also dominated by young adults whose hyoid and thyroid horns are still flexible and unossified.

Age/ossification is the single strongest predictor in both mechanisms. Fractures become much more common after ~40 years regardless of hanging vs ligature. onlinelibrary.wiley.com

Important caveats (so the picture is not overstated)

Hanging rates vary enormously (0% to >70%) depending on how the neck is examined and how old the victims are. Routine autopsy series often miss fractures; complete dissection + radiology in older European/North American hanging victims finds laryngohyoid fractures in 45–72% of cases, with thyroid horns more often broken than the hyoid. sciencedirect.com
Ligature-strangulation series are almost always tiny (often n = 4–20), so their percentages are unstable.
Thyroid superior-horn fractures occur readily in both; they are not very discriminatory.
Cricoid fracture is a better pointer than hyoid or thyroid. It is rare in hanging (classically cited as ~1 in 2700 in older compilations) and occurs in roughly 5–20% of homicidal strangulations. Bottom line: If you look only at individual studies that put hanging and ligature strangulation side-by-side, most of them do show higher percentages of both hyoid and thyroid fractures in ligature strangulation. The difference is clearest for overall neck-structure injury and for cricoid fractures; it is more modest and age-dependent for isolated hyoid or isolated thyroid-horn fractures. Absence of fractures never excludes either mechanism.
