British MP Clive Lewis has said he was “definitely misled” by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) over the United Kingdom’s cooperation with Five Eyes allies on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP).

Lewis, the Labour MP for Norwich South and a former shadow defence secretary, is calling for greater transparency and democratic accountability over the issue.

He made the comments during a conversation with Dr Peter Skafish, co-founder and executive director of the Sol Foundation, a U.S.-based UAP research institute and policy think tank.

Skafish drew attention to questions Lewis had submitted to the MOD about whether Britain was working with the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand - its partners in the Five Eyes intelligence alliance - on UAP.

 

Skafish said:

“I believe one or two of your questions concerned whether the United Kingdom was working with other Five Eyes governments on the UAP issue - and, in both cases, I believe you received a negative answer.”

“So, have I been lied to? I’ve definitely been misled.”

 

The exchange followed a series of written parliamentary questions Lewis submitted in July and August 2025 about the MOD’s knowledge and investigation of UAP, as well as its involvement in international initiatives.

The initial questions were answered by Luke Pollard, who was then Minister for the Armed Forces and now serves as Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry.

 

Pollard said that the MOD had not conducted or commissioned any UAP studies since 2013.

He also repeated that the department had stopped investigating sightings in 2009 after concluding that none of those reported over more than 50 years had indicated a military threat to the United Kingdom.

But it was Pollard’s answer on international cooperation that drew Lewis’s criticism.

 

Pollard stated:

‘The Ministry of Defence has not participated in any international groupings specifically focused on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) since May 2023.’

Lewis then asked whether UK cooperation with the Five Eyes UAP Caucus was ongoing.

Rather than answering yes or no, Veterans and People Minister Louise Sandher-Jones referred him back to Pollard’s earlier response.

 

Those answers sit uneasily alongside a documentary trail showing that British officials had been drawn into Five Eyes UAP coordination over a period of several years.

A Five Eyes Paper Trail Dating Back to 2021

That trail begins with the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force, or UAPTF, the U.S. Navy-led body established by the Pentagon in August 2020.

Its mission was to detect, analyse and catalogue UAP that could potentially threaten U.S. national security. The task force was later replaced by what would eventually be known as the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO).

In June 2025, John Greenewald of The Black Vault published U.S. Navy emails showing that an introductory briefing between the UAPTF and Five Eyes representatives was being arranged in late 2021.

 

Further correspondence was later released in New Zealand following an appeal under the country’s Official Information Act.

The New Zealand material was provided to Liberation Times by Australian UAP researcher Grant Lavac, who has used freedom-of-information requests to trace Five Eyes engagement with UAP and previously brought the official agenda for the May 2023 caucus into the public domain.

 

The email chain carried the subject line ‘UAPTF Intro (unclassified)’ and described the proposed event as an ‘Introduction for FVEYS Office to UAP Task Force.’

Initially scheduled for 30 November 2021 and later moved to 8 December, the correspondence included British officials Owen Rimmer and Annabelle Janes alongside representatives from Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

 

Lavac identified Rimmer as a Royal Navy lieutenant commander.

Although little additional information about his career is publicly available, the correspondence shows that he acted as the principal UK coordinator for the proposed briefing, forwarding the invitation and serving as a point of contact with U.S. and Five Eyes officials.

Janes is a senior British Army officer with a background in military intelligence and international liaison.

 

In 2010, while holding the rank of major, she served as a UK exchange officer at the U.S. Army’s National Ground Intelligence Center in Virginia.

She was subsequently identified as commanding officer of the British Army’s Land Intelligence Fusion Centre and has since been promoted to colonel. In 2025, she was serving as the British defence attaché to Thailand.

 

The records establish that Five Eyes officials were coordinating with the UAPTF.

They do not show that the briefing took place in 2021: both the New Zealand correspondence and Greenewald’s U.S. records indicate that it was postponed.

Formal meetings were not the only sign of UAP-related intelligence circulating within Five Eyes at the time.

Liberation Times previously reported that an intelligence assessment classified an object engaged by a Royal Air Force Typhoon over Syria in 2021 as UAP.

 

The RAF described it as a hostile drone and said it had been destroyed. Journalists Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp, who said they had been exposed to the Five Eyes assessment, stated that it did not confirm the object’s destruction.

The assessment has not been released publicly, so those details cannot be independently verified. The episode nevertheless offers a glimpse of how UAP-related information may have circulated among allies even as the MOD maintained that it no longer investigated the subject.

 

From a Postponed Briefing to a Formal UAP Caucus

An email supplied to Liberation Times by Lavac confirms that a Five Eyes meeting eventually occurred in 2022.

 

In the email, sent to another researcher in June 2025, Pentagon spokesperson Susan Gough wrote:

‘We don’t comment on the details of meetings with our Five Eyes partners, including which members were in attendance.

‘Please note that the 2022 meeting was with AARO, not the UAPTF. AARO had replaced the UAPTF by then.’

The Pentagon did not identify the countries represented. Since AARO later called the May 2023 gathering its first Five Eyes UAP Working Group, the 2022 event appears to have been an earlier introductory meeting.

Lavac repeatedly asked whether the 2022 engagement was the UAPTF briefing postponed from late 2021, but Gough did not answer.

The UK’s participation is clearer in May 2023.

 

An official Pentagon agenda shows that the inaugural Five Eyes UAP Caucus Working Group was held on 24 May 2023. The United Kingdom was listed alongside Australia, Canada and New Zealand as one of the partners scheduled to provide a UAP update.

The agenda also looked ahead to possible reporting networks, shared databases, collection planning and further meetings.

As previously reported by Liberation Times, the MOD’s Defence Intelligence Secretariat later confirmed that two of its officials attended. An Information Commissioner’s Office decision also records that confirmation.

The Pentagon subsequently indicated that the discussions continued.

 

In June 2024, Gough told Liberation Times that AARO ‘continues to discuss areas of mutual interest and concern related to UAP with its FVEY partners.’

Gough did not say whether every Five Eyes country took part in every later discussion. But the MOD’s refusal to answer Lewis’s follow-up leaves Britain’s position unclear.

After the names of Rimmer and Janes emerged, Lavac requested their UAP and Five Eyes-related correspondence from the MOD.

 

In a response dated 31 July 2025, the MOD refused to confirm or deny whether it held relevant records, citing national security, defence, security bodies and international relations.

The MOD stressed that its refusal did not prove the records existed, although it referred to Britain’s work with international partners on ‘collaborative joint defence matters.’

The evidence requires a careful distinction. The 2021 and 2022 material does not directly contradict Pollard’s answer, which concerned participation after May 2023. Nor does the Pentagon’s 2024 statement establish that Britain took part in every subsequent discussion.

What the record does show is that British officials were involved before and during the May 2023 caucus, that AARO later described discussions with Five Eyes partners as continuing, and that the MOD declined to say whether the United Kingdom remained involved.

 

Australia’s Contradictory Account

The transparency questions raised by Lewis are not confined to Britain. Australia has faced its own contradictions over the same May 2023 meeting.

On 19 July 2023, the Australian Department of Defence responded to a Question on Notice from then Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson by categorically denying that Australia had attended AARO’s UAP briefing in May 2023. The denial was clear and unambiguous.

Yet on 15 December 2023, less than six months later, the department reversed its position and acknowledged that a defence representative from the Australian Embassy in Washington, D.C., had attended the inaugural AARO Five Eyes UAP Caucus Working Group briefing.

It also confirmed that Australia had not merely observed the meeting, but had actively presented at it.

 

The inconsistency followed an earlier exchange over UAP discussions with the United States.

On 17 May 2022, during the first U.S. congressional hearing on UAP in more than half a century, Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray testified that the Pentagon had brought allies and international partners into its discussions.

Six months later, on 9 November 2022, Senator Whish-Wilson questioned then Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Robert Chipman during Senate Estimates.

 

In light of Australia’s close defence relationship with the United States, the senator asked whether Australian intelligence or the Air Force had participated in those discussions.

Chipman said he was not aware of any formal discussions with the United States and that such matters would have crossed his desk if they had occurred.

Yet Australian officials had already been included in preparations for the late-2021 Five Eyes briefing, although the records indicate that it was postponed.

The Pentagon has also confirmed that a Five Eyes meeting was held with AARO in 2022, but has not identified the countries represented.

Lavac told Liberation Times that the lack of transparency was "very concerning".

 

Lavac added:

"The Chief of Air Force leads all discussions on UAP in Australia when called before a Senate estimates, so if there's one person that needs to know what is happening on the UAP topic in an Australian context and our discussions with allies, it's him."

"He was either completely uninformed due to a complete lack of intelligence sharing, or there's a high-degree of incompetence, or it's something more sinister like plausible deniability or deliberate obfuscation. Any one of those scenarios are of great concern. What confidence can Australian taxpayers have that their elected representatives are going to have their pertinent questions answered truthfully and accurately by those in positions of authority in the Australian Department of Defence?"

Against that wider Five Eyes backdrop, Lewis is seeking to bring the unresolved question of Britain’s involvement under closer scrutiny in the House of Commons.

 

“We’re a Democracy Too”

Although UFOs and UAP have periodically surfaced in Parliament, some of the most prominent interventions have come from the House of Lords, including a dedicated debate in 1979 and an exchange initiated by Lord Sarfraz in 2021.

Sustained engagement from elected MPs remains rare.

 

Lewis is therefore a notable exception, particularly given his experience as a former shadow defence secretary and a British Army infantry officer who served in Afghanistan.

However, Lewis is cautious about what UAP may represent and does not assert that they are of non-human origin.

 

Lewis said:

“I don’t make a public judgement on whether UAP are real, whether the technology exists or whether we have been visited by non-human intelligence.

“I just think there is a discrepancy in what we’re being told, and I think the British public have a right to know.

“The U.S. public seem to be hearing things that we should also be hearing here in the United Kingdom. We’re a democracy too.”

 

He added:

“The approach I take in the United Kingdom is that, whether UAP exist or not, you can already see from what’s coming out in the United States that there are contradictions which need to be dealt with.

“At some point, someone somewhere in my government, or one of the institutions around it, has decided that the British public should not hear about this. As a parliamentarian, I have an issue with that.

“I accept there are some things which are classified for good reason that I don’t need to know about.

“But when we look back through history, there are many things governments did not need to hide. They were concealed not because of the security of the realm, but because they represented inconvenient truths.”

 

For Lewis, the unresolved question is not what UAP ultimately represent, but whether the government has given Parliament and the British public a candid account of the country’s involvement.

She said the alleged device was implanted when she was young and collected her eggs as they matured.

 

'I was visited when I was a young girl and aliens — alien beings — implanted an interdimensional device in me that harvested my eggs over my lifetime,' Souza said.

'This device obviously was harvesting them right when they would mature so that they could then … try to create a hybrid child.'

Souza said she was later shown the alleged hybrid and told its name was Starburst. She also claimed that thousands of other women had had their eggs harvested by beings she regards as demonic

There is no independently verifiable evidence presented by Souza for the alleged device, the harvesting of her eggs or the existence of Starburst.

 

Souza's 'Star Gods' Theory

Souza's claims form part of a broader theory developed in Star Gods, which argues that beings described as aliens or UAP occupants are actually fallen angels connected to the biblical Nephilim.

In the book, Souza argues that these beings are engaged in what she describes as a 'seed war,' involving the harvesting of human reproductive material and DNA to create hybrid offspring and corrupt the human bloodline.

She links the alleged activity to an end-times deception involving spiritual warfare and biblical prophecy.

Buried within President Donald Trump’s unprecedented oil deal with Venezuela is a provision designed to exert a level of control over the South American company for 100 years, the Wall Street Journal exclusively reported Saturday night.

 

Announced on Friday, the deal will see the United States be granted rights to Venezuela’s untapped oil fields for a century. Furthermore, the U.S. government would take a direct stake in Venezuela's oil reserves, the single-largest proven oil reserves on earth

 

According to “people involved in negotiating the agreement” who spoke with the Journal on the condition of anonymity, the U.S. government “plans to take a 35% passive stake” in North American Blue Energy Partners, a private oil-and-gas company led by controversial Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt. The company’s structure was also set up in such a way as to tie the hands of future Venezuelan governments.

 

“The private company structure was deliberately intended to bind future Venezuelan governments to the agreement and make it difficult to unwind, one of the people involved said,” the Journal’s report reads. “They consider it unlikely that a new government would expropriate a private company, the people said.”

Britain's largest local authority has spent a year treating the Union Flag and the St George's Cross as a public-order problem. On Saturday the picture sharpened again: the legal squeeze now circulating around Birmingham's flag war is being described as a ban aimed at England and the United Kingdom, while other national colours keep their place in the city's official life.

 

Birmingham City Council has gone to the High Court to stop "unauthorised attachments" on the highway. Breach of an injunction of this kind can mean unlimited fines and up to two years in prison.

 

The people named in the papers are the campaigners who put British flags on lampposts. But the council still finds time to raise other nations' flags outside the town hall and light the city library in foreign colours. To top it all off, they have reportedly confirmed that anyone raising foreign flags will be exempt from the new ban.

 

On 26 August the council submitted its application to the High Court. The named respondents include Raise the Colours co-founder Ryan Bridge, Elliott Stanley, Julian Keane, Ross Child, Billy Allison, Ben Cullen, Mark Keating and "persons unknown."

 

The catch-all clause is the point. If a judge grants the order, it is not only the named men who are in the frame. Anyone who keeps putting flags on lamp columns, railings or other street furniture without permission can be pulled into contempt proceedings.

 

Green councillor Jane Baston, cabinet member for equalities, communities and social justice, said: "The council is taking a lawful, proportionate and evidence-led approach to unauthorised attachments on the highway. This includes pursuing injunctive action based on the evidence gathered to date."

 

She added: "Our priority is to protect public safety, staff and contractor welfare, community cohesion and the responsible use of public funds. We ask residents and community groups to support this approach and to ensure any displays are placed only where permission exists."

 

The authority insists the action "is not directed at any particular community, belief or viewpoint." It says officers have "witnessed incidents that have involved harassment, intimidation or obstruction during removal activity."

 

That is the official script. The record of the last twelve months tells a different story about which flags trigger the machinery of the state.

Fatalities from Israel’s Vast Gaza Genocide Deliberately Undercounted

 

The mainstream media has no problem guesstimating the deaths (500,000) from the Assad Dictatorship’s Civil War in Syria, nor the estimated deaths in the wars in Ukraine, Sudan, or Iran.

 

Somehow, media editors do not let their investigative reporters assess the extent of Israel’s mass murder of civilians in Gaza—an exposed, defenseless population of 2.3 million people in an enclave the geographic size of Pennsylvania. The Associated Press notes that U.S. military historian Robert Pape believes, “Gaza is one of the most intense civilian punishment campaigns in history” and that, “It now sits comfortably in the top quartile of the most devastating bombing campaigns ever.”

 

Why? One reason is that the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health certifies deaths in Gaza based on reports from hospitals and morgues that were mostly blown up well over a year ago. (They report presently around 73,000 fatalities.) But Hamas has admitted that there are tens of thousands of bodies under the rubble, thousands more blown into bits or incinerated and unidentifiable. They also say their figures do not include the collateral deaths (e.g., spreading fires) from the Israeli military F-16 bombings and relentless shelling of the people of Gaza or the deaths caused by the Israeli government-imposed blocking of food, medicine, healthcare, water, fuel, electricity and shelter. From other conflict zones around the world, the ratio of collateral deaths is anywhere from 3 to 13 times the deaths by violent weaponry.

 

The Israeli regime is fine with the Hamas undercount because they and the U.S. State Department know the real death toll (along with the injury count) is much, much higher. Hamas knows that on October 7, 2023, the multi-layered Israeli border security apparatus was shaky. They then launched what turned out to be a suicide-homicide assault over the border, resulting in some 1400 deaths as compared with the nearly 1200 people—about 400 of them soldiers and police—shot by the Hamas raiders. To this day, with most Israelis skeptical, Netanyahu has blocked an independent official investigation of the mysterious collapse of the multi-tiered Israeli border security complex.

 

Netanyahu attributes it to negligence. There were, however, too many separate warnings, including 24-hour Israeli spotters from the Israeli side, plus Israel having the Hamas plans a year earlier, to accept that improbable pretext.

 

Hamas, on the other hand, doesn’t mind the world media repeating again and again their minimal, identifiable death count. They certainly do not want the realistic estimate death count to further outrage their subjects because Hamas did not protect the civilian population, and did not have any air-raid shelters. Hamas certainly knew what was coming from the ultra-modern, savage Israeli military backed by co-belligerent Joe Biden’s U.S. ultra-modern and lethal military industrial complex.

 

There is another media reluctance operating. The reports by eyewitnesses, and scholarly and military weaponry specialists, who arrive at minimum and maximum ranges of deaths (most of whom are children and women) bring repulsive denunciations and charges of anti-Semitism.

 

Moreover, apologists for endless Israeli slaughter, like Bret Stephens, the mouthpiece of Netanyahu on the New York Times opinion page, have used the low Hamas figures to counter charges of Israeli genocide. If it was genocide, they inaccurately claim, the death toll would be much higher. In 2025, two major Israeli human‑rights organizations – B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel – each issued reports concluding that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza (see reporting from Amnesty International).

Tech firm’s $50 million Trump library gift preceded massive federal land deal

 

The Tokyo-based company confirmed its donation was made two months before the Trump administration approved its Ohio-based data center, expected to be the largest in the world.

 

The Japanese tech giant SoftBank Group gave $50 million to Donald Trump’s presidential library in January 2026 — two months before the Trump administration approved a federal land lease that will allow the firm to build what could become the world’s largest artificial intelligence data center.

 

The company confirmed the timing of its donation in a written response to Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., who released the letter Thursday.

 

The White House referred questions to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation, which did not respond to a request for comment. SoftBank and the U.S. Energy Department also did not respond.

 

Although the $50 million gift was reported earlier this year, its timing around the land lease deal remained unknown. The Democratic senators said SoftBank’s donation — the library’s largest known donation — came squarely within the timeframe in which SoftBank was seeking federal approval for its Ohio project.

 

“Are we expected to believe it’s a coincidence that two months after SoftBank donated $50 million to the Trump library, his administration announced a massive lease deal for SoftBank’s data center?” Warren said in a statement. “Again and again, it seems like Trump is putting handshake deals with CEOs over what’s best for Americans.”

 

The lawmakers highlighted a sequence of events that they questioned.

 

In December 2025, reports surfaced that SoftBank and the administration were discussing a plan to use money from Japan’s $550 billion U.S. investment commitment to build Trump-branded industrial parks across the country. By January, SoftBank’s proposal was reported to be on the short list for selection.

 

That same month, SoftBank donated $50 million to the Trump library.

 

Then, on March 20, the Department of Energy and the Department of Commerce announced the partnership with SoftBank subsidiary SB Energy to redevelop the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant near Piketon, Ohio — a Cold War-era uranium enrichment site — into a 10-gigawatt AI computing campus on roughly 3,700 acres of federal land. SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said the campus could draw up to $500 billion in private investment.

 

The Democrats say the arrangement let SoftBank sidestep permitting and regulatory steps that a private land project of that size would normally face. The Energy Department has described the lease as a way to put a decommissioned national security site back to work and argued SB Energy also committed to accelerated environmental cleanup of the area.

Ukraine’s central bank has launched an anti-money laundering probe into several lenders who processed a bail payment for former Justice and Energy Minister German Galushchenko, amid fresh allegations of high-level corruption in Kiev.

 

Earlier this month, Western-backed anti-corruption agencies accused a group of officials, including a deputy head of Vladimir Zelensky’s office, of laundering about $3.3 million in cash to secure Galushchenko’s release on bail.

 

Galushchenko, who was arrested and charged with money laundering and membership of a criminal organization after attempting to leave Ukraine, is also a suspect in a separate corruption case linked to Timur Mindich, self-exiled in Israel but known widely as ‘Zelensky’s bagman’.

 

Ukrainian state-owned Sense Bank temporarily disabled fraud detection systems at the same time that some $1.7 million in cash – intended for Galushchenko’s bail – was allegedly laundered and processed, records released by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) indicate.

 

Sense Bank is the former Ukrainian branch of Alfa Bank, which Kiev nationalized in 2023 under the guise of enforcing sanctions on Russia.

 

Ukraine’s central bank said Thursday that it is also investigating several other institutions linked to the bail payments.

 

Mindich’s man in the government

Galushchenko was arrested in February and charged with large-scale money laundering in connection with an alleged criminal network operated by Mindich, who himself fled Ukraine to Israel after NABU accused him of extorting $100 million in kickbacks from state atomic energy company Energoatom.

 

Galushchenko was duly released on $3.3 million bail in late June, upon receipt of cash by the authorities reportedly from four dubious sources.

 

NABU surveillance audio files suggest that Zelensky’s deputy head of office, Irina Mudraya, and others, used influence at Sense Bank to convert bags of cash into bank transfers to the account of the High Anti-Corruption Court. Investigators filmed the cash being delivered, according to the case materials. Mudraya, who is accused of administering the scheme, was subsequently arrested and fired.

Who controls Sense Bank?

Recordings linked to Mindich previously leaked to the media include a discussion between one of his associates and a former adviser to the bank’s CEO about impending changes to its supervisory council, and during which the body’s current head, Nikolay Gladyshenko, was identified as a suitable candidate.

 

Gladyshenko and the bank’s current head, Aleksey Stupak, allegedly approved the bail payment scheme. Sense Bank’s director of financial monitoring, Lyudmila Snigur, who has since been suspended, was reportedly threatened with dismissal unless her department skipped human reviews of transactions made during “maintenance” of the automated systems.

 

Control relinquished by ‘Israeli refugee Timur’

The Mudraya case materials depict Sense Bank as being in a vulnerable position and seeking new protection with the permission of “Israeli refugee Timur” – presumably Mindich. This allegedly made the bank susceptible to “requests” to launder money for Galushchenko.

 

“People from Sense Bank today were like a balm to a wound,” Mudraya allegedly said after bank executives met officials from Zelensky’s office. “They crawled to us like kittens: ‘Please, please, take us!’”

 

Doubts about Ukraine’s anti-laundering system

NABU’s allegations have further embarrassed the central bank as its reputation disintegrates in the fallout from the corruption surrounding Zelensky. The regulator launched an investigation into Gladyshenko in May after his possible links to Mindich became public, but maintains that it did not have enough evidence before the latest revelations to declare him unsuitable for the position.

 

Gladyshenko announced he was recusing himself from his role, but this “did not exclude his actual influence on the bank’s operations,” the central bank conceded last week.

 

The central bank insists the Mudraya case demonstrates that its anti-money-laundering system is effective,but has confirmed that it is also investigating other banks that may also have participated in the cash-to-bail scheme run out of Vladimir Zelensky’s office.

In an open letter signed by companies including Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, Amazon and Anthropic, the firms warn that advanced AI tools are rapidly lowering the threshold required to carry out complex cyberattacks. According to the companies, the window of opportunity is closing. As AI models continue to improve, so does their ability to identify vulnerabilities, write code and autonomously carry out increasingly large parts of an attack chain.

 

They are therefore calling on governments and companies to begin significantly upgrading their defenses now, rather than wait until such capabilities become even more widespread. Notably absent from the list of signatories are Meta and Elon Musk’s xAI.

An attack that once took weeks could be reduced to minutes

One of the main concerns involves what are known as “agentic” attacks — attacks in which AI systems do not merely provide answers or write code, but can independently carry out a sequence of actions to achieve a goal.

In the letter, the companies warn that AI agents can operate at machine speed, search systems for vulnerabilities, adapt their actions to what they find and move on to the next stage with almost no human intervention. As a result, an attack process that once might have taken days or weeks could, at least in some scenarios, be reduced to minutes.

Icelanders have turned out in unusually large numbers to decide whether to reopen accession talks with the European Union, with the founding NATO member split almost exactly down the middle over its future relationship with Brussels.

 

Polling stations closed at 10 PM local time on Saturday, with the latest partial results showing “no” narrowly ahead after an exceptionally tight count. With around 152,000 votes counted, the nationwide tally stood at 50.1% for “no” and 49.9% for “yes,” as election officials warned that a reliable final result might not emerge until later on Sunday.

 

Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, who backed reopening negotiations, said she hoped the extraordinarily close contest would neither divide the country nor leave lasting wounds.

 

“The main thing is that we remain united … whether the result is yes or no,” she said.

 

Interest in the referendum has been exceptionally high. More than 63,000 people – close to a quarter of the electorate – had already cast advance ballots by Friday night. Turnout on election day was also running ahead of the 2024 parliamentary election in parts of Reykjavík.

 

The ballot asks voters a single question: “Should Iceland resume accession negotiations with the European Union?”

 

A “yes” would not automatically make Iceland an EU member. It would restart negotiations abandoned more than a decade ago, with any eventual membership agreement expected to be put to voters in a second referendum. The vote itself is legally advisory, although Frostadottir has pledged to respect the result.

 

The campaign went down to the wire. A final Maskína survey put the “yes” camp at 50.4% and “no” at 49.6%, while a Gallup poll shortly beforehand showed essentially the reverse picture, with opponents narrowly ahead.

 

Iceland first applied to join the EU in 2009 after its devastating banking collapse and began negotiations the following year. The process was suspended after a change of government in 2013 and effectively abandoned in 2015 as the economy recovered and enthusiasm for surrendering powers to Brussels faded.

 

Supporters of restarting the talks have argued that closer EU integration could bring greater economic and currency stability and give the country of fewer than 400,000 people more influence over rules it already adopts through the European Economic Area. The country is also part of the Schengen zone and deeply integrated into European markets.

 

Opponents have focused heavily on sovereignty, agriculture and, above all, Iceland’s fishing grounds, warning that eventual membership could subject the strategically vital industry to the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy.

 

The geopolitical argument has also loomed unusually large. Frostadottir’s allies have portrayed the EU as additional protection in an increasingly unstable world, particularly after US President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to take control of neighboring Greenland.

 

Unease was further fueled in January when Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Iceland, Billy Long, joked that the country itself could become the “52nd state” of the US, with him serving as governor.

 

Euroskeptics, meanwhile, have argued that Brussels itself is becoming increasingly militarized and confrontational. Iceland is already a founding NATO member and maintains extensive military ties with Washington.

Today's Blind Items - The Real Story

Considering what was involved, it was one of the most hushed up things in recent memory. Essentially you had one story in the news when it happened and then another at the conclusion. There was no middle and definitely no followup to what happened at the end. A live in employee of a permanent A lister was supposed to be off work that day. She came back early though because she hadn't been feeling well. What she walked in to scared her to her core. Somehow, despite being scared at what she saw before her, and the offspring that was obviously being offered up, she managed to get a couple pictures to turn into authorities. She never got that chance. She was told by her employers the new story she would be telling if she ever had to talk to police. She never did. The employers didn't want her breaking under pressure. The employee confided in a couple of people. One of those wanted to go to the police but was talked out of it. He then arranged a meeting with the employer to tell them he was going to go the police. Instead, because he was a foreign national, he was deported in under 24 hours because the employer had that kind of pull. Some other calls were made and everything was swept under the rug from 7,000 miles away. The whole thing just went poof. The frightening speed this all went away was crazy.
