Macron and Aoun discuss efforts to back Lebanon’s army, end Israeli attacks

The French presidency said the aim of the Paris talks was to review a Lebanese armed forces deployment plan

The leaders of France, Lebanon and Jordan convened in Paris to drum up international support for the Lebanese army.

Macron welcomed Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and King Abdullah II of Jordan to Paris for the talks on Thursday.

The meetings come after a US-mediated framework deal was agreed between Israel and Lebanon in June. But the agreement did not force Israel to withdraw from the large area of southern Lebanon it occupies, and Israel has continued its attacks on the country.

The agenda also included the creation of a new force to succeed a longstanding United Nations peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon.

The officials were later joined by chiefs of defence staff from Lebanon, Jordan, France, the United Kingdom and Italy, as well as top US and Saudi officials, a French military source told the AFP news agency.

Macron said that the talks aimed to “strengthen Lebanon’s sovereignty and enable it to fully ensure its security”.

“A sovereign and stable Lebanon is a decisive step toward peace and stability for the entire region,” Macron wrote in a statement on X.

“We support the Lebanese Armed Forces, which are indispensable for asserting the authority of the Lebanese state across its entire territory,” he added.

The French presidency said the aim of the Paris talks was to review a Lebanese armed forces deployment plan based on a “clear, credible and realistic” framework.

Paris said it wanted this as a prerequisite for what it hopes will be “robust” international support, whether in the form of financial assistance, equipment or training.

Earlier in the day, Aoun and Macron also discussed “efforts to put an end to Israeli attacks in light of the Lebanese-American-Israeli negotiations and the ‘framework agreement’”, according to the Lebanese presidency.

Aoun also said the Lebanese army is the “main pillar for protecting Lebanon’s sovereignty”, stressing that strengthening state authority is a Lebanese choice rather than an externally imposed demand.

The Lebanese president expressed his “profound relief” at the progress of the talks, his office said in a statement on X, adding that he also expressed hope that the needs of the Lebanese army would be met by its allies.

Aoun reiterated his affirmation that only the state should have arms and praised the Lebanese army’s role in working towards the country’s stability.

The poorly equipped Lebanese forces have struggled to carry out their mission to disarm Hezbollah in the south.

Aoun has repeatedly stated his determination to disarm Hezbollah, but “without a confrontation”.

Post-UNIFIL alternatives

The talks also come as the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) ends this year after almost half a century of operations dating back to the Israeli invasion of 1978.

Last year, the UN Security Council, under US pressure, decided to end UNIFIL’s mandate on December 31, 2026.

France and Italy have said they want to set up a multinational coalition to succeed UNIFIL. The force has just fewer than 7,500 peacekeepers from 46 countries.

Aoun told the AFP this week that Lebanon wanted a new force, European or otherwise, to prevent a security vacuum after the UN peacekeepers leave south Lebanon.

Israel and the United States attacked Iran in February, setting off a war that has spread across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, with Israeli forces fighting Hezbollah.

Israel invaded southern Lebanon, and its forces continue to occupy what is a stretch of Lebanese territory about 10 kilometres (six miles) deep along the border.

In June, Israel and Lebanon signed a US-sponsored framework agreement that involves the disarmament of Hezbollah, a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon’s south and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the region.

Fears of a renewed Israeli military campaign, however, are growing in Lebanon after escalating attacks, despite the “ceasefire” agreed to in June.

189 Children Found, Over 12,000 Arrested In Memphis Task Force Operations

A law enforcement initiative in Memphis, Tennessee, has resulted in 189 missing children being found and the arrest of 12,747 individuals over the past year, with overall crime expected to hit a 25-year low, the White House said on Tuesday.

Arrests made by the Memphis Safe Task Force, a multi-agency initiative established by presidential memorandum in September 2025, include 1,408 known gang members, as well as 1,363 people apprehended for narcotics offenses, 1,276 for firearms violations, 131 for homicide, and 125 for sex offenses, the White House said on the task force's first anniversary.

One of the individuals arrested through the task force's efforts is a 19-year-old who was indicted on May 24 for child-related sex crime charges, including raping a minor, according to a June 10 statement from the U.S. Marshals Service. In January, the Marshals Service also announced the recovery of two siblings and a toddler.

Overall crime in Memphis has declined nearly 36 percent from last year, with significant downturns across several crime categories, including motor vehicle theft, down 57 percent; shoplifting, down 44 percent; robberies, 42 percent; murders, 36 percent; sexual assaults, 28 percent; and aggravated assaults, 26 percent, the White House said.

The presidential memorandum signed by President Donald Trump last year said Memphis was suffering from "tremendous levels of violent crime."

The task force's objectives include ending "street and violent crime in Memphis" through measures such as hypervigilant policing, large-scale saturation of certain neighborhoods with law enforcement personnel, and aggressive prosecution, according to the memorandum.

Has the time come for Pakistan to step up further in support of its Saudi ally? Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif thinks so.

During an interview with Pakistani TV channel Geo News, Asif affirmed that his country remains committed to defending the kingdom, also calling it a duty to protect Islam's holy sites.

"The Mecca agreement applies to us as well, and we will fulfill our duty," Asif said.

"If there is an attack on Mecca, there is no need for an agreement to protect it," he said.

Al Jazeera on Thursday cited the Pakistani defense chief as indicating that "the time has come to implement the Mecca agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkiye due to recent Houthi attacks." He also described that Islamabad is pressuring Tehran regarding Houthi actions.

Just two days ago, Saudi Arabia accused the Iran-backed Houthi rebels of targeting Mecca with a one-way attack drone. It was said to be headed "toward" the Islamic holy city from Yemen, which however the Houthi military spokesman vehemently denied.

The kingdom called it a 'red line' and sought to garner support and sympathy from external countries. "The security of the Two Holy Mosques and the pilgrims is a red line, and the Joint Forces Command of the coalition will not hesitate to take the necessary and deterrent measures against the Terrorist Houthi Militia," the kingdom said.

As for Pakistan's Asif, he was cited further as saying, "I don’t think Iran as a state will open another front" - and reiterated Pakistan's commitment to preventing the conflict from expanding. Also per Newsquawk:

Dangerous Escalation: German, French, UK Militaries Ramp Up Flights Near Russian Border

Kremlin sources are sounding the alarm over increasing NATO flights observed flying closely to Russia's border, amid dangerously heightened rhetoric over alleged Russian drone incursions in the Baltics and Poland, as well as accusations of a Russian-backed UAV sabotage campaign in Germany and central Europe.

State media reports, "German, French and UK military aircraft have been spotted flying near the Russian border, according to flight data analyzed by Sputnik on Thursday."

The heightened Western military aerial activity is further described, with the outlet writing, "A German air force aircraft took off from the German Nordholz airfield at around 6:12 a.m. (GMT) and as of 8:50 a.m. it was spotted patrolling over the Baltic Sea."

"A French air force Airbus A330-243MRTT military aircraft was circling in Finnish airspace near the Russian border as of 9:42 a.m., while a UK air force Boeing Poseidon MRA1 patrol aircraft with the call sign RFR7045 was circling near Russia's Kaliningrad Region in Polish airspace as of 10:30 a.m.," the report indicates.

We earlier detailed how recent drone spillover from the conflict, including explosive-laden drones coming out of Belarusian territory and threatening the Baltics, has resulted in Western officials increasingly alluding to NATO 'collective defense'.

This kind of rhetoric strongly suggests the situation could rapidly escalate into full-blown Russia-NATO direct confrontation on the basis of a single aircraft shootdown.

Earlier this week Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded to allegations of European officials that Moscow seeks to expand the war beyond Ukraine.

"I would like to emphasize that we have no interest in engaging in this [attacking Europe], but if Europe, which is talking about preparing for war against Russia on a daily basis, attacks Russia, it will be a completely different war, and it will be very short," Lavrov said in translated remarks. There was clearly a whiff of nuclear threat behind these remarks.

Dearborn Leaders Spent Taxpayer Funds to Promote Islam While Discriminating Against Christians and Jews, Lawsuit Alleges

A new lawsuit against the city of Dearborn, Mich., and its mayor alleges city officials have used public funds and city property to celebrate Ramadan, while refusing requests from residents to similarly recognize Christian and Jewish holidays.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Freedom Law Center on behalf of Dearborn resident Margot Cleveland, alleges that not only did Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and other city officials ignore her requests for equality, but they also retaliated against her for speaking out.

Cleveland, who is a senior legal correspondent for The Federalist, first brought the issue to the attention of local officials in April 2025 after the city displayed “Ramadan Kareem” banners and a “large, lighted crescent moon” on public property. Meanwhile, no displays were erected for Lent, Passover or Easter.

Cleveland emailed the Dearborn city attorney on April 6, 2025,asking whether Easter and Passover would be given equal recognition, but she received no response.

She later filed a Freedom of Information Act request and found the city had spent public funds on the Ramadan banners and crescent moon display and that the Dearborn Police Department had produced and sold Ramadan-themed shirts bearing the department’s official emblem.

Several months later, Hammoud lashed out at a Christian pastor who raised concerns during a city council meeting about the planned renaming of a street in Dearborn in honor of Osama Siblani—a public supporter of Hezbollah and Hamas.

“Although you live here, I want you to know as mayor, you are not welcome here,” Hammoud told the pastor, according to the lawsuit. “And the day you move out of the city will be the day that I launch a parade celebrating the fact that you moved out of the city.”

The incident led AFLC to send a letter to Hammoud and the city attorney on Cleveland’s behalf, arguing that “the City of Dearborn has become a hostile place for Christians and Jews.”

The letter asked the city to display banners recognizing Christmas, Easter, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur alongside its Ramadan banners. But once again, the request went unanswered.

However, in February 2026, the city unveiled new crescent-moon-and-star light displays on municipal street lights for Ramadan. Hammoud claimed at the time that the display “reflects who we are as a city.” Once again, city officials failed to sponsor a comparable display for any Christian or Jewish holidays.

Cleveland attempted to raise the issue at several city council meetings and in emails to each individual council member. However, the city attorney, apparently acting on the advice of the mayor, told council members not to communicate with her because she was being represented by counsel, the suit alleges.

Despite her requests, the city council passed its annual budget without allocating any funds for Easter or Passover banners or a menorah, despite a budget surplus. Cleveland tells National Review the city council never explained why.

“In fact, they refused to speak with me, eventhough I agreed to speak with them without my lawyer and either individually or with the City Attorney(or a private attorney). And I only went to the City Council after my initial request went ignored for months,” she said.

The city of Dearborn’s press office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from National Review.

Cleveland says she is not asking Dearborn to remove its Ramadan banners or religious display, and notes she stressed that point in her initial email to the city.

“I wish my Muslim neighbors a blessed Ramadan, and merely seek equal treatment for Christians and Jews,” she said.

After she first spoke at a city council meeting about the issue, Cleveland says other residents reached out to express similar concerns.One woman told Cleveland she, too, had contacted the city after the banners first appeared and that they “basically ignored her.”

The lawsuit accuses the city’s leaders of violating the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment and the establishment clause of the First Amendment. It further accuses city officials of retaliating against Cleveland in violation of the First Amendment’s free speech clause.

“The clearest command of the Establishment Clause is that the government may not prefer one religion over another,” said Robert J. Muise, AFLC co-founder and senior counsel. “The City of Dearborn spent taxpayer money to light up its streets and parks for Ramadan while stonewalling a resident who simply asked that Easter, Passover, and other Christian and Jewish holy days be treated the same way. That is a straightforward Establishment Clause violation, and the retaliation our client faced for speaking up about it only compounds the constitutional harm.”

That retaliation includes “authorizing the additional installation of lighted Ramadan signs as a direct affront to Plaintiff’s request for Christian and Jewish displays; directing the City Attorney to not communicate with Plaintiff; directing the Chief of Police to not communicate with Plaintiff; directing City Council members not to communicate with Plaintiff, even though they are her representatives in the government; opposing funding for Christian and Jewish religious displays; and excluding Plaintiff from additional Community Meetings,” according to the lawsuit.

Cleveland’s attorneys note the city has faced legal action on several other occasions for its treatment of Christians. A court previously struck down the city’s restriction on a Christian pastor’s distribution of religious literature at a local Arab festival. In another case, the city paid a $300,000 settlement to Christians who were unlawfully arrested for evangelizing at the same festival.

Dearborn is the first and largest Arab-majority city in the U.S. In 2020, 54.5 percent of the population reported Middle Eastern or North African ancestry.

“Dearborn has been down this road before, and it has lost every time,” said David Yerushalmi, AFLC co-founder and senior counsel. “What makes this case especially troubling is that City officials, up to and including the Mayor, responded to a citizen’s respectful request for equal treatment with silence, stonewalling, and outright hostility — including the Mayor’s own words telling a Christian resident he is ‘not welcome’ in his own city. Our client is simply asking the City to treat Christians and Jews as equal citizens.”

The trial for the Vermont man charged with attempted murder in the November 2023 shooting of three Palestinian college students in Burlington entered its fourth day Thursday, with testimony now focusing on whether the 51-year-old defendant is criminally insane.

In court proceedings Wednesday, in Burlington, jurors heard a tape recording of defendant Jason Eaton telling his attorneys after the shooting – weeks after the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza – that he was acting under the direction of voices he was hearing through his FM radio from the CIA and others.

Eaton says at one point in the recording that a voice told him, "Go stop them now,” as the victims walk down the street and near the front porch of his home.

Authorities in the early stages of investigating the shooting, near the University of Vermont campus, considered the possibility of charging Eaton with a hate crime but didn't have enough related evidence.

So far in the trial, which began Monday, Chittenden County prosecutors have relied largely on forensic gun evidence and testimony from over a dozen witnesses including police and the three victims.

Eaton now faces three charges of attempted murder. He could face a life sentence if convicted of the charges.

Dr. Fabian Saleh, a forensic psychiatrist with The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland, testified Wednesday for the defense that he relied heavily on the recording as well as medical and court records and his interviews with Eaton in reaching his conclusion that the defendant was legally insane at the time of the shooting, according to local news outlet The Vermont Digger.

And in opening statements, defense lawyer Joshua O’Hara, previewing testimony from a defense psychiatrist, told jurors his client was suffering from a delusional, psychotic disorder after losing his job at a credit union two weeks before the shooting.

The trial is expected to continue through the week. An expert for the state is expected to testify that Eaton was not insane at the time of the shootings.

In the first two days of the trial, Chittenden County prosecutors in presenting their case relied largely on forensic gun evidence and testimony from over a dozen witnesses, including police and the three victims.

According to trial testimony, Eaton stepped off a porch and without speaking shot Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid and Tahseen Ali Ahmad while they were on a walk. They survived but Awartani was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Two of the men wore traditional Palestinian scarves and reportedly spoke a mixture of Arabic and English prior to the shooting.

AI giant Anthropic has signed an agreement to operate in a proposed $32 billion mega AI centre on Queensland’s Western Downs, marking the company’s first major infrastructure investment in Australia.

Work on the 725-hectare site near Dalby is expected to begin before Christmas and employ 1500 in construction and eventually 1400 in the operational side of the business.

Dalby has a current population of about 12,800 and the project will provide a massive economic boost to the region with the influx of workers and contractors during construction and the permanent workforce.

Anthropic is at the forefront of the global AI revolution, which Elon Musk says will eventually make money irrelevant, supposedly because AI robots will produce more food, housing, transport, and energy than humans can consume, and goods will be super abundant.

Anthropic has experienced unprecedented growth from annual revenue of $500 million in late 2025 to more than $65 billion currently, fueled by massive enterprise adoption of its Claude AI models that will run out of the facility.

The Federal MP for Maranoa David Littleproud sees the project as a massive boost for the Western Downs economy and is confident that the massive amounts of water and electricity required for the site will be available, including from gas resources near Dalby and solar farms.

The facility will require the equivalent of the output of the Eraring Power Station, comparable to the energy use of roughly 1.5 million average Australian households.

It will be called the Western Downs Digital Park and aims to come online by 2027, with the broader build-out expected to take four to six years.

Unlike the unrealistic Federal Government proposals that aim to restrict new data centres strictly to 100% renewables, the Queensland state government will let the facility draw from a diverse local energy mix, including existing gas-fired power and the Kogan coal-fired power station.

Littleproud says Anthropic is expected to cover full grid-connection costs and go to market for long-term power agreements. Anthropic’s lease agreement at the site remains subject to final approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) and local council planning sign-offs.

Anthropic is heavily backed by tech giants. Amazon has committed to investing up to $33 billion, while Alphabet (Google) maintains a massive multi-billion-dollar stake and tech infrastructure partnership.

Premier David Crisafulli said the project was a direct result of his recent trade mission to the US. “This is a major win that will deliver more jobs, put more energy into Queensland’s grid and drive down power prices for Queenslanders,” he said.

“My meeting with Anthropic during the trade mission was to outline why Queensland was the place to invest, with energy security, locations to invest and a streamlined approvals process to get it right.”

Mr Crisafulli has promised data centre investment will drive down energy costs for consumers, and companies must add energy to the local grid.

The $32 billion complex is actually an infrastructure partnership where Anthropic is the primary anchor tenant.

While the physical facility is being built by Singapore-based developer Zerra DC, Anthropic’s massive capital backing and global user base for Claude are what make anchoring a multi-gigawatt mega-project financially viable.
