Jim Mattis to Pakistan: Time to End War in Afghanistan

 

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Monday that it was time for Pakistan to get onboard with peace talks to end the war in Afghanistan.

 

β€œWe are looking for every responsible nation to support peace in the sub-continent, and across this war in Afghanistan,” he told reporters before a meeting with the Indian defense minister on Monday at the Pentagon.

 

β€œIt’s gone on now, its approaching 40 years; 40 years is enough. It’s time for everyone to get onboard, support the United Nations, support [Indian] Prime Minister Modi, support [Afghan] President Ghani and all those who are trying to maintain peace and make for a better world here,” he continued.

 

Afghans fought against a Russian occupation beginning in 1979. The war ended in 1989 β€” when the Taliban promptly took over β€” and installed fundamentalist rule and allowed the Taliban to take safe haven there. In 2001, the U.S. invaded Afghanistan after al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden planned the 9/11 attacks against the U.S. from the country.

 

Mattis’s comments came in response to a question over whether the Defense Department has confidence in Pakistan’s willingness to help.

 

President Trump recently sent a letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan asking him for his government’s help and cooperating in advancing peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

 

The U.S. believes Pakistan wields significant influence over an influential Taliban branch known as the Haqqani network, whose leadership is believed to have safe haven in Pakistan.

 

The Trump administration has doubled down on diplomatic efforts to end the war. Trump in October appointed Amb. Zalmay Khalilzad to spearhead those efforts, and he has reportedly been meeting with members of the Taliban and the Afghan and Pakistan governments.

 

The U.S. is trying to kickstart Afghan government-led talks, but the Taliban considers the Afghan government illegitimate and prefers to speak with the U.S. There have been no breakthroughs, according to the Washington Post.

 

The Taliban has insisted that U.S. troops leave the country as part of any peace deal, but the U.S. fears that once troops leave, the government will fall to the Taliban and al Qaeda will reestablish safe haven there and plot more 9/11-type attacks against the U.S.

A police officer abused his power, kidnapped a mentally diminished woman from a hospital, handcuffed her, raped her on the hood of his car, and he is only doing 90 days.

 

In August of 2017, Curtis Lee Arganbright, a Westminster police officer, was asked to take an unruly woman home from the hospital. She was allegedly attempting to steal items belonging to the Emergency Room after checking herself in for alcoholism. But instead of getting the woman safely home, Arganbright took her down a dark road and raped her on the front of his car while she was still in handcuffs.

 

Instead of felony charges for sex assault by force, sex assault by a person in a position of authority and false imprisonment, the officer reached a plea deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to lesser misdemeanors of unlawful sexual contact and official misconduct. As a result of the sweetheart deal, some have alleged, Arganbright now only has to serve 90 days in jail followed by four years probation, and has to register as a sex offender.

 

Criminal defense attorney Dan Recht told Denver’s Channel 7 news the prosecution likely believed they did not have enough evidence in court to get a felony conviction. Recht described the difficult scenario.

 

They have a victim that was intoxicated. An officer saying that she was sexually aggressive and he foolishly and unlawfully reacted and was sexual, but that it was consensual…At the end of the day. It’s clearly he said, she said. Except that he’s a police officer and it’s an abuse of power.

β€œAlthough President Bush served as our Commander-in-Chief before my time in β€˜The President’s Own,’ the close relationship he developed with the Marine Band is well-known,” Music Adviser to the White House and Marine Band Col. Jason K. Fettig said. β€œWe have been fortunate to have had wonderful moments with every president we serve, but President and Mrs. Bush’s gratitude for our Marines and for the special music we provide in The People’s House was especially warm and always engaging. He never missed an opportunity to connect with those around him and thank them for their contributions, and the men and women in the band who got to know President Bush both during his administration and in the many years beyond will always remember his ever-present appreciation and admiration for all those who served our nation alongside him.”

 

Col. John R. Bourgeois, USMC (Ret.), Marine Band Director from 1979-96, recalled memories of President Bush with great ease. β€œOf all the presidents I served, he was the most conversive and was the kindest man in the world,” he said. He recounted how the president would make a point to bring the guest of honor from each state dinner over to Bourgeois and the Marine Chamber Orchestra to make introductions. β€œIt was very much like being a part of the family,” Bourgeois said. It was during President Bush’s administration, in February 1990, when Bourgeois led the Marine Band on an historic 18-day concert tour of the former Soviet Union as part of the first ever U.S.-U.S.S.R. Armed Forces band exchange. β€œThe president was integral to making that tour happen and while we were there we saw the end of the Soviet Union,” he said.

 

On a more light-hearted note, Bourgeois recollected an event on Dec. 7, 1992, when the Marine Band performed Hail to the Chief at a White House holiday reception for the president’s staff. At the end of the fanfare, an unlikely gentleman made his way through the crowd and took the podium: comedian Dana Carvey, known for his uncanny impression of the president. But it was the annual Gridiron Club dinner where Bourgeois witnessed President Bush in a truly nostalgic moment. It was March 1993 and Gridiron president, Los Angeles Times bureau chief Jack Nelson, sat at the center of the head table with newly-inaugurated President Bill Clinton on one side of him and former President George H. W. Bush on the other. As Bourgeois led the Marine Band to the dais for The Star-Spangled Banner, he saw both Clinton and Bush lean over to whisper to Nelson. Nelson later told Bourgeois that President Bush commented that there are many things he won’t miss about being president but the Marine Band isn’t one of them.

 

Few members of the Marine Band can boast of a better first performance at the White House than former Marine Band pianist Master Gunnery Sgt. Robert Boguslaw, USMC (Ret.). Although he had performed at the White House before May 14, 1992, this was the first time he performed solo in the private residence. As he played a medley of Broadway show tunes from β€œCarousel” and β€œOklahoma,” President Bush and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev stood in the well of his piano where he overheard the two leaders discuss perestroika and the fall of the Berlin Wall. β€œPresident Bush was always a gentleman and always came over to shake my hand and thank me,” he said.

Red Hill Underground

 

Originally Top Secret, Red Hill’s hidden facility became generally known in the early-1990s, when the facility was declassified.

 

Prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor all of the Navy’s fuel was stored in unprotected above ground tanks at Pearl Harbor, next to the submarine base.

 

When RADM Chester Nimitz was Commander of the Bureau of Yards & Docks (in 1940) he wanted the Navy’s 2 Β½-year supply of fuel oil protected from aerial attack – existing aboveground unprotected tanks next to the Submarine Base presented a vulnerable enemy target.

 

Standard practice was to dig a trench and bury the tanks, but this was impractical to store 255-million gallons of fuel oil; here, the Navy’s initial plan was to dig a series of tunnels and insert the tanks

 

Instead, consulting engineer James P Growden came up with excavating large vertical tank chambers instead of horizontal tunnels. (Nothing like this had ever been attempted before.)

 

This would increase the volume of material that could be excavated simultaneously and decrease the number of heavy equipment needed for hauling muck. It also decreased the unit cost for rock removal substantially.

 

Starting the day after Christmas 1940, 20 underground fuel storage tanks were built more that 100-feet below the surface. (The facility was designed as an impenetrable, bombproof reserve of fuel for the military.)

 

To determine the depth necessary to protect the fuel from Japanese aerial attack, the engineers gathered data from the Army, multiplied it four-fold and rounded the figure off to 100 feet of rock cover.

 

The attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 had little effect on the work site – work on the storage facility proceeded virtually without interruption.

 

Each vertical tank is 100 feet in diameter and 250 feet high, roughly the size of a 20-story building, and lined with quarter-inch steel plates (it has an overall design capacity of 6-million barrels of fuel oil (9.97-billion gallons.))

 

Dug from the inside, the storage facility is connected with pipes (32-inch-diameter diesel pipe, and 18- and 16-inch jet fuel pipes) and tunnels down to a Pearl Harbor pumping station, more than two-and-a-half miles away.

 

The tanks were set up in two parallel rows with two main access tunnels, one above the other, bisecting the rows; smaller tunnels branched from these main axis tunnels to the tank cavities.

 

The upper dome of each fuel chamber was excavated first, starting with a ring tunnel, then working upward, towards the central shaft. They started digging in the upper portion of each tank chamber.

 

Upon completing the ring tunnel, the miners dug upwards in a hemisphere from all points around the ring, narrowing as they reached the central shaft. As soon as the upper hemisphere was concreted, workers were lowered down the central shaft to begin excavation of the tank chamber.

 

The miners continued to dig downwards in a cone until they reached the lower hemisphere of the tank chamber; tThe lining for the lower hemisphere was placed similarly to the top.

 

Then, they steel-lined the walls of the tank chamber. Reinforced concrete was placed against the rock and smooth continuously welded steel plates formed the inner liner. (Rogers)

 

Think of the scenario: with limited above ground disturbance, hollowing out twenty 20-story building-sized cavities 100-feet underground, lining each with ΒΌ-inch steel (with concrete-backing,) testing and repairing leaks, and tunneling them together and to Pearl Harbor, 2 Β½-miles away – in secrecy.

 

In 1995, the American Society of Civil Engineers placed the facility alongside Hoover Dam, the Eiffel Tower, Panama Canal and Statue of Liberty as a historic landmark.

 

In 2014, evidence of fuel leakage was noted. The Navy and City & County, State and Federal agencies have come together to evaluate the impact to the environment and community, and to look at solutions in dealing with the leak and strategies to mitigate the impacts.

 

While at DLNR, I had the opportunity to visit the Red Hill Underground Fuel Storage Facility above Pearl Harbor; it’s a secured facility with no public tours or access.

If you look closely at Pelosi's words and her body language in her comments the other day, you get some clear hints about what is going on.

 

At 4:11, referring to the Democratic caucus, she says "our unity is our power"– for a second, right as she says this, a look of mockery flashes on her face.

This flashing look of mockery occurs again at 4:21, when talking about the results she expects for the Democrats: >>4168653

 

The uncomfortable and unenthused looks on her colleagues' faces, and these subtle moments of mockery suggest that the words are not quite so true as they would seem. The Democrats did not nominate her "because they are so unified". Something else is going on.

 

The most telling part starts at 6:35, with Nancy talking about working with POTUS. At 6:38 she hesitates, and looks, up, then grimaces and looks down, before referring to "my power"… This noticable pause and facial complication clearly indicates that there is some hidden emotion relating to her own power.

 

When we look at how quickly and confidently POTUS suggested Pelosi would be the speaker again after the midterms; compare Pelosi's manner and attitude to Lindsey Graham's; and keep in mind the basic idea that POTUS et. al. are using leverage to make deals and make progress in draining the swamp, then we have a very good framework for explaining Pelosi's ease of victory, her overall air of cheerfulness (freedom), her colleagues' apparent ill-ease, and her nonetheless stumbling at the memory of her own power (no longer independent), and her apparent subtle facial mockery of her colleagues.

Over 23 million girls in Nigeria are victims of child marriage, the country representative for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women revealed Sunday amid a campaign against gender-based violence in the African country.

Gender-based violence is evident also in the political realm, where women have reported numerous cases of victimization, intimidation, and harassment, in order to sideline them in the upcoming 2019 General Elections,” Lamptey said.

 

Violence against women takes many forms in Africa. Last month, Kenyan authorities sentenced a mother to six years for forcing her 13-year-old twin daughters to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) β€œto avoid a curse from her deceased grandfather,” Reuters reported.

 

Referring to the recent conviction in Kenya, Mercy Chege, the director at the Plan International charity that rescued the twin girls, told Reuters, β€œA community member alerted us when they had heard the mother was organizing the girls to undergo the cut, so we informed the local authorities. Unfortunately, we were not able to prevent the circumcision as by the time the police conducted the raid and rescued the girls, they had already been cut.”

 

Last Tuesday, a federal judge in Michigan deemed a federal ban on the heinous practice in the United States unconstitutional, arguing that while state laws against FGM are valid, the federal government lacks the authority to outlaw the procedure.

 

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman’s ruling against the federal ban on the practice came a few months after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that β€œmore than 500,000 women and girls in the United States are at risk of or have been subjected to FGM/C (Female Genital Mutilation or Cutting).”

 

In the United States, 27 states including Michigan have reportedly passed laws that criminalize FGM.

 

The U.N. believes about 200 million girls and women worldwide have undergone FGM.

 

According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, 18 African nations, including Kenya and Nigeria, and 13 industrialized countries prosecute FGM practitioners.

 

FGM, which involves the partial or total removal of genitalia, can come at a tremendous cost to many girls who bleed to death or perish from infections.

 

Although adherents of Islam and Christianity both practice FGM, the procedure is prevalent in predominantly Muslim countries, particularly in Africa.

I guess I am having trouble seeing what does a few days buy unless they have a SERIOUS plan to disrupt this movement. The Court, however, found an agreement did exist as a combination of the oral agreement, the written repair service order, and the website terms and conditions. Tubal-Cain was required to indemnify Crowley for Parker’s injuries. Their prior course of dealing and the fact that Tubal-Cain never objected to these terms affected the Court’s decision.

It’s never the beans’ fault (see my prior post on how the Supreme Court ridiculed the β€œBlame the Bean Defenseβ€œ) Fava beans alone don’t cause problems-it’s the combination. Similarly, it was the combination that was Tubal-Cain’s downfall.

The message here is a warning about potentially lethal combinations: Without any oral discussion; no formal contract β€œin writing” and signed by the parties; and no notice other than an innocuous reference to β€œsee terms and conditions on xyz website”—you could be held to owe indemnity and insurance protection for a personal injury or death of anyone, regardless of fault.
