Scientists have traditionally studied diseases separately because they have separate pathologies. Heart disease mostly comes from accumulated fat deposits clogging arteries, cancers from DNA damage, Alzheimer’s and other dementias from damaged brain cells, etc.—and each disease has multiple contributing factors. But they share a common feature: Aging drives them all. If we delay aging and rejuvenate organs, tissues, and cells, we can prevent or remediate them all. According to Nir Barzilai, director of the Institute of Aging Research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, “Although aging is the major risk factor for developing most adult-onset diseases, systematic investigations into the fundamental physiology, biology, and genetics of aging are only just beginning.”

There’s good reason to be confident that moving away from the “infectious disease” model and shifting research dollars from individual diseases of aging to the basic biology of aging will be productive. Not only because such a shift upgrades the theoretical model on which research is based, but because it already has been. A seminal paper in this field was published in Nature in 2005. “Rejuvenation of aged progenitor cells by exposure to a young systemic environment” had profound implications and initiated multiple lines of investigation being actively pursued by the scientists involved in the original experiments and by many others in labs at universities, research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies around the world.

For all the money AI has made for big companies like Google and Facebook, this year companies have woken up to some of the pitfalls of the technology: It can easily become biased, there’s no set code of ethics for the technology, and putting research into the real world too soon can cost lives.

Europe—not the US or China—publishes the most AI research papers

The popular narrative around artificial intelligence research is that it’s mainly a war between China and the United States. Not so fast, says Europe.

New data released today (Dec. 12) by the AI Index, a project to track the advancement of artificial intelligence, shows a trend of Europe releasing more papers than either the US or China. The data was assembled from Scopus, a citation database owned by scientific publishing company Elsevier.

If the current trend continues, China will soon overtake Europe in the number of papers published. The number of papers out of China grew 17% in 2017, compared to a 13% increase in the US, and 8% in Europe.

Why Trump Wants a Space Force for the Final Frontier

Satellites make much of modern warfare possible, through GPS systems, wireless communications and sophisticated weather forecasting. This makes them tempting military targets. The U.S. Air Force has been responsible for defending American satellites and spacecraft. President Donald Trump said in 2018 that the perils required a new military branch, an idea that came to be known as the Space Force. The idea was popular with crowds at the president’s rallies, but not with Pentagon officials or many in Congress. After months of debate, Trump signed an order creating a more modest Space Force that would sit within the Air Force, similar to how the Marine Corps sits within the Navy.

What would a Space Force do?

In a report to Congress released in 2018, the Department of Defense laid out a plan to build a new force to defend U.S. interests in space with aggressive offensive capabilities. This would include systems that could “degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy, and manipulate adversary capabilities.” The force would hold joint space training and military exercises with U.S. allies.

Is there a true military threat in space?

Yes, but not in the Hollywood sense of alien invaders attacking lower Manhattan. The main threat is the ability to disable or destroy an adversary’s satellites from the ground. In 2007, China first used a ballistic missile to destroy its own old weather satellite orbiting 535 miles (861 km) above Earth; Russia has been testing a missile that could be used to strike and destroy a satellite or ballistic missile. It’s likely that other nations won’t be far behind. If you destroy a spy satellite, the flow of real-time intelligence from a particular spot in China or Iran could stop. A communications satellite that’s jammed from the ground could mean ground troops suddenly find themselves operating blindly. And because existing international treaties governing space are unclear, even civilian satellites could be targeted by nations looking to contain or punish their enemies.

How would the new force defend space?

The U.S. military was already working on systems to protect satellites from threats like jamming and destruction by “kinetic” objects, such as missiles or other satellites. And there’s a top-secret Air Force aircraft, the X-37B, which has orbited Earth for expanded periods; its missions are unknown. In a speech on Aug. 9, Vice President Mike Pence said American should have “dominance in space.” A Space Force could mean bigger research and development budgets. Some in Congress have called for weapons that could destroy ballistic missiles from space. On a more workaday level, the Space Force would likely take over the job, now performed elsewhere in the Air Force, of tracking the world’s active satellites to make sure they don’t collide with one another or with space debris and to notify owners to reposition their satellites if there’s a possibility of impact.

Can the U.S. put weapons in space?

Yes. The 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty, which bans weapons of mass destruction in space, prohibited orbiting nuclear weapons. But it didn’t prohibit other weapons. In an interview with Bloomberg in October, the head of the Air Force Space Command, General John W. “Jay” Raymond, said that “our goal is not to have conflict in space.” But, he added, space is “a war-fighting domain and we need to treat it as such.”

How would the force get started?

Congress would need to authorize it first, something it declined to do last year. Trump now has directed the Defense Department to send a legislative proposal to Capitol Hill that would establish Space Force as a sixth military service branch within the Department of the Air Force, something that’s seen as a politically easier step. The proposal also calls for a Space Force chief of staff who would be a member of the Joint Chiefs and confirmed by the Senate.

How much would it cost?

Congress will decide that as part of the budget process. When he made his pitch for an independent Space Force, Trump called on Congress to allocate $8 billion over the next five years for space security systems. But the administration may request just $100 million of new funding in its fiscal 2020 budget next month, a senior administration official said. The Air Force now gets more than $11 billion for its space programs — the bulk of the Defense Department’s unclassified national security space programs, according to the Pentagon’s fiscal 2019 budget request.

More ways they're trying to eliminate any opposing narrative

On Wednesday morning, Adam Schiff, the powerful chair of the House intelligence committee, joined journalists around the world in a nascent Twitter meme: he searched “vaccine” on Facebook and posted a screenshot of the results.

Schiff’s search results were indeed alarming: autofill suggestions for phrases such as “vaccination re-education discussion forum”, a group called “Parents Against Vaccination”, and the page for the National Vaccine Information Center, an official-sounding organization that promotes anti-vaccine propaganda. And while search results on Facebook are personalized to each user, a recent Guardian report found similarly biased results for a brand new account.

If the congressman had tried to search “vaccines” on the rival social media site Pinterest, however, he would have had little more to screenshot than a blank white screen. Recognizing that search results for a number terms related to vaccines were broken, Pinterest responded by “breaking” its own search tool.

As pressure mounts on Facebook to explain its role in promoting anti-vaccine misinformation, Pinterest offers an example of a dramatically different approach to managing health misinformation on social media.

“We’re a place where people come to find inspiration, and there is nothing inspiring about harmful content, said Ifeoma Ozoma, a public policy and social impact manager at Pinterest. “Our view on this is we’re not the platform for that.”

This hasn’t always been the case. Pinterest, the visual social network, faced scrutiny in 2016 after a scientific study found that 75% of posts related to vaccines were negative. The next year, Pinterest updated its “community guidelines” to explicitly ban “promotion of false cures for terminal or chronic illnesses and anti-vaccination advice” under a broader policy against misinformation that “has immediate and detrimental effects on a pinner’s health or on public safety”.

The policy change cleared the way for Pinterest to deploy a number of technological approaches to combating anti-vaxx propaganda. The company has banned boards by a number of prominent anti-vaccine propagandists, including the National Vaccine Information Center and Larry Cook, who runs the website and Facebook group “Stop Mandatory Vaccination”.

But retroactive enforcement of content rules is just one aspect of the company’s approach.

Take search results. The phenomenon on display in the Facebook search result screenshots is known in technology circles as a “data void”, after a paper by the Data & Society founder and researcher danah boyd. For certain search terms, boyd explains, “the available relevant data is limited, non-existent, or deeply problematic”.

In the case of vaccines, the fact that scientists and doctors are not producing a steady stream of new digital content about settled science has left a void for conspiracy theorists and fraudsters to fill with fear-mongering propaganda and misinformation.

Data voids may be relatively easy to diagnose, but they are very difficult to fix.

Kraft Heinz : Warren Buffett's Kraft Heinz Bet Dragged Down Berkshire Hathaway in 2018

The world's most famous investor had one of his worst years ever in 2018.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. said Saturday it swung to a $25.4 billion loss in the fourth quarter due to an unexpected writedown at Kraft Heinz Co. and unrealized investment losses.

Berkshire posted operating earnings of $5.7 billion, up from $3.3 billion a year earlier, due to increased earnings from Berkshire's railroads, energy business and other segments. For the year, Berkshire posted $24.8 billion in operating earnings. That was a record high, Mr Buffett said in his annual letter to shareholders that was also released Saturday.

Mr. Buffett in his letter offered no hints about who will eventually succeed him as CEO. But he did offer praise for deputies Ajit Jain and Greg Abel, saying that decisions to elevate the two men last year into more prominent roles "were overdue."

Messrs. Jain and Abel were promoted in early 2018 to vice chairmen and now oversee many of Berkshire's day-to-day operations. One of the two men is expected to succeed Mr. Buffett as chief executive.

"Berkshire is now far better managed than when I alone was supervising operations," Mr. Buffett wrote.

Berkshire reported net earnings of $4 billion in 2018, down from $44.94 billion in 2017. Berkshire's 2017 earnings soared in the fourth quarter of 2017 due to changes in the U.S. tax law that lowered Berkshire's deferred tax obligations for stock investments that it currently holds.

After opponents lost the spending battle in Congress, four Republican attorneys general in Arizona, Oklahoma, Nevada and Texas filed a lawsuit Thursday. In their complaint, they say the administration decided to give away government property without congressional approval, even though a nonpartisan government report recently concluded otherwise.

If the government allows its contract to expire, they say, “plaintiffs will lose the predictability, certainty, and protections that currently flow from federal stewardship of the internet and instead be subjected to ICANN’s unchecked control.”

The lawsuits says ICANN might take “unilateral actions” that adversely affect what’s known as the authoritative root zone file, opening the door to “unchecked” changes to .gov or .mil addresses, including ones used by the attorneys general themselves.

“If you control the authoritative root zone file, you can control what websites appear on the internet,” Cruz spokesman Phil Novack said. “Can you directly make changes to content on a specific site? No. But can you determine who gets a site, the policies governing those sites, and which sites get to operate and which sites get shut down? Absolutely.”

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump recently sided with Mr. Cruz’s position, despite their well-documented feuds, in a rare foray for the mogul into arcane government policy.

Lawrence E. Strickling, the Commerce Department official in charge of the switchover, said reneging on the transition plan that started in 2014 would actually embolden “authoritarian regimes to intensify their advocacy for government-led or intergovernmental management of the internet via the United Nations.”

“Among the most persistent misconceptions is that we are giving away the internet,” he told the Senate Judiciary Committee this month. “That is simply not true. To be crystal clear, the United States does not control the internet. No one country or entity controls the internet. The internet is a network of networks that operates with the cooperation of stakeholders around the world.”

The idea that climate change is producing heat records across the Earth is among the most egregious manipulations of data in the absurd global warming debate.

Americans receive a daily barrage from the fake news media and climate “experts” reporting that each and every day, week, month or year is the hottest on record due to global warming. On Feb. 7, several major newspapers carried stories of the declaration by NASA and NOAA that the past five years have been the warmest on record.

Sadly, these supposed experts use mathematical equations that do not jibe with reality over the past 140 years.

SCIENTISTS have created mind-controlled rats that can be directed through a maze by the power of human thought.

Researchers implanted micro-electrodes to the rat's brain and connected it to the brain of a human volunteer who was hooked up to a computer. Unbelievably, when the human 'manipulator' thought about moving their left arm, the rat turned left. The same with the right arm.

Blinking sent signals to the rat to move forward and after continuous research with six 'cyborg rats' the scientists were able to direct the rodents through incredibly complex mazes. Movement-related thoughts in the mind of the manipulator sent signals to the computer, which then translated those signals into instructions and sent them to the brain of the rat.

The team at Zhejiang University first started with just a few tubes and then moved on to something to intricate designs with tight turns and multiple levels.

Discover Magazine wrote: "The results showed that rat cyborgs could be smoothly and successfully navigated by the human mind to complete a navigation task in a complex maze,“Our experiments indicated that the cooperation through transmitting multidimensional information between two brains by computer-assisted brain-machine interfaces is promising."

Brain Machine Interfaces (BMI) already allow humans to control things with their minds, but this is the first time an animal has been controlled - creating a brain-to-brain interface.

In the future, the Zheijang researchers hope that “information flow will be made bidirectional and communicative between two human individuals."

Andrea Stocco, a brain researcher at the University of Washington said that the results of the rat cyborg study were "impressive but believable".

"The holy grail of BBI would be sharing rich content that cannot be better expressed in words, such as emotions and feelings,” he told the magazine. "We are still so far from that, but, of course, that would be the dream."

Prep for widespread internet DNS outage - last night some posts about IP addresses and local HOST file to overcome potential DNS issues.

As long as you put these into your hosts.txt file and save it, you'll be good in the event of some DNS skull-duggery going down.

The instructions in the notables are good, but I believe the hosts.txt file usually has the 'read-only' attribute set, which will need to be disabled fist, in order to allow saving of changes/additions to the hosts.txt file.

This can be done, by right-clicking the hosts.txt file and selecting its properties - look for a 'Read only' checkbox, to untick.

HOSTS.txt and how it works is really very simple, and I probably should have used a bit less tech parlance.

As per the image in my previous post, HOSTS.txt is a relic - it was the precursor to the DNS system we have today.

DNS (Domain Name System) translates human readable domain names (like 8ch.net, for example) to computer readable addresses (The IP version 4 address is 104.18.105.234 - I won't get into IP version 6…).

To access the internet and trhe services hosted at any organisations domain, most people's computers and routers are configured to look out to either their ISP's DNS server, or a public DNS server (less common) to find the latest IP address for a given domain. This is because they can change - your website, for instance, might have been migrated to another web-host and you need the world of potential clients on the 'net to know this - DNS updates achieve that.

DNS servers talk to one another, and they're all being updated from a centrally controlled source or master for the internets DNS records (this process is usually referred to as 'propogation').

If there was fuckery at the DNS root level, it would propogate out quickly and effectively poison the ability of all client devices (ie; your PC, phone, tablet, etc) to resolve domains names to IP addresses correctly - you'd be cut off.

Using the relic that is HOSTS.txt, you bypass internet held DNS records.

Your device looks to the HOST file first to resolve the domain for any request from your device.

If there is an entry for 8ch.net with an IP against it in your hosts file, then your device doesn't even bother looking to an outside DNS server to resolve the record - you've immunised yourself against propogation of bad DNS records from outside of your local network (the infrastructure behind your router).

The Trump administration issued a rule Friday barring Title X funds from supporting programs and organizations that provide abortions.

The rule states that “none of the funds appropriated for Title X may be used in programs where abortion is a method of family planning.” The move will force Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics to separate their palliative services such as cancer screenings, pap smears and breast exams from their abortion services.

The new rule also “requir(es) the physical and financial separation of Title X projects and facilities from programs and facilities where abortion is a method of family planning,” according to the text.

Family planning clinics will be unable to provide referrals for abortion, the rule states, if they’re receiving these funds.

The rule will also force clinics to report cases of rape, incest and human trafficking — as federal law already requires.

Academy cadet charged with sexual assault, making child pornography

An Air Force Academy cadet in his second year will face an Article 32 hearing Monday on charges including sexual assault, the academy said in a Friday release.

Cadet 3rd Class John-Paul Thompson has been charged with one specification of a violation of Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, or alleged sexual assault, and one specification of an alleged violation of Article 134, or knowingly and wrongfully producing child pornography of a 17-year-old.

Thompson has also been charged with one specification of an alleged violation of Article 92 of the UCMJ, for failing to obey a no-contact order, the release said.

The charge sheet provided by the academy said that Thompson allegedly raped a woman at or near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on or about March 30, 2018. It also said he allegedly created videos of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct on multiple occasions in the continental United States between April and June 2017. It is unclear whether the charges involve the same alleged victim or different people.

I understand the evil politicians who are doing what they are dong because they are fighting to hold on to power and keep their true evils from disclosure. But what the hell is going on with the media? How can so many be so complicit? The lies and bias and hatred and…..dude…..just the lies……sheesh…..I see umpteen things every day which sicken me….

How can so many people tell so many lies, so often? The lies are ridiculous, ludicrous, and impossible to believe - obvious lies, which should fool nobody - and yet so. Many. People. Still. Believe them.

Hoax attacks? People pretending to have been abused just so they can slander the White House? Swathes of news outlets saying nothing condemnatory about this, in spite of the evidence, and instead still working tirelessly to find a way to blame it on Donald Trump? And scores of viewers still can't see through it all!! People assaulting people for liking the President who has brought back jobs, is cleaning up the worst mess imaginable, is truly fighting every day for his citizens….and yet still receives the most unfathomable abuse, every single day, from every angle.

How have you not lost your minds? Do you not want to scream, every day? The most admirable thing is the way you are keeping your cool and not going out and punching leftists up and down the place.
