The New York Times’ Long History of Endorsing US-Backed Coups

 

The New York Times Editorial Board, it seems, rarely meets a coup backed by the US government that it doesn’t approve of.

 

Bolivian President Evo Morales was overthrown in a U.S.-backed military coup d’état earlier this month after Bolivian army generals appeared on television demanding his resignation. As Morales fled to Mexico, the army appointed right-wing Senator Jeanine AΓ±ez as his successor. AΓ±ez, a Christian conservative who has described Bolivia’s indigenous majority as β€œsatanic”, arrived at the presidential palace holding an oversized Bible, declaring that Christianity was re-entering the government. She immediately announced she would β€œtake all measures necessary” to β€œpacify” the indigenous resistance to her takeover.

 

This included pre-exonerating the country’s notorious security services of all future crimes in their β€œre-establishment of order,” leading to massacres of dozens of mostly indigenous people.

 

The New York Times, the United States’ most influential newspaper, immediately applauded the events, its editorial board refusing to use the word β€œcoup” to describe the overthrow, claiming instead that Morales had β€œresigned,” leaving a β€œvacuum of power” into which AΓ±ez was forced to move. The Times presented the deposed president as an β€œarrogant” and β€œincreasingly autocratic” populist tyrant β€œbrazenly abusing” power, β€œstuffing” the Supreme Court with his loyalists, β€œcrushing any institution” standing in his way, and presiding over a β€œhighly fishy” vote.

 

This, for democratic-minded Bolivians, was β€œthe last straw” and forcing him out β€œbecame the only remaining option,” the Times extolled. It expressed relief that the country was now in the hands of β€œmore responsible leaders” and stated emphatically that the whole situation was his fault; β€œThere can be little doubt who was responsible for the chaos: newly resigned president Evo Morales,” the editorial board stated in the first paragraph of one article.

 

The Times, according to Professor Ian Hudson of the University of Manitoba, co-author of β€œGatekeeper: 60 Years of Economics According to the New York Times,” remains America’s most influential news outlet in shaping public opinion.

 

β€œDespite the changing media landscape and the financial troubles of old school journalism models – including the New York Times – it remains the agenda setter. Social media often use or respond to Times stories. It is still probably the single most referenced news outlet in the U.S. Other websites, like Yahoo get more hits, but they do not report or create their own stories. The New York Times still ranks as the top investigative and opinion setting news organization” he told MintPress News.

 

The first draft of history

 

Newsrooms across America are sent advanced copies of the Times’ front page so they will know what is β€œimportant news” and adjust their own coverage accordingly. In this way its influence extends well beyond its nearly 5 million subscribers, its output becoming the first draft of history. Yet, when it comes to U.S. intervention, the Times offers its β€œconsistent support” for American actions around the world, Hudson says, claiming that the latest Bolivia example β€œvery much followed this trend.” Indeed, there has rarely been an effort at regime change that the paper did not fully endorse, including the following six examples.

Manufacturing consent

 

Studying the Times’ coverage of U.S.-orchestrated coup attempts, it becomes clear that there is a checklist of talking points it employs time and again to justify events.

 

Blame all economic and political problems on the government; ignore the effect of any U.S. sanctions.

Constantly present the targeted leader as a tyrannical autocrat crushing dissent, no matter what the reality is.

Insist that the leader is actually a Russian plant controlled by the Kremlin.

Refrain from using the word β€œcoup”. Prefer instead words like β€œuprising”, β€œrevolt” or β€œtransition”.

Express ridicule at the idea that the U.S. could be involved in the affair.

Depict the new U.S.-backed rulers as democratically-minded and downplay any violence they commit in establishing their rule.

Blame the deposed leaders for their own overthrow.

 

To be sure, the New York Times is not the only major media outlet guilty of reflexively supporting every U.S. action around the world. The Economist and the Washington Post both came out to support the coup in Bolivia, as they had done before with Venezuela. But the Times’ position as β€œthe paper of record” sets it apart in terms of importance.

 

This position makes it a crucial weapon in the propaganda war waged on the American people in order to manufacture consent for regime change abroad.

β€˜No place like it on earth’ β€” Kraft launches million-dollar contest to defend Israel from BDS

 

 

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft won the 2019 Genesis Prize at the beginning of the year, receiving a million-dollar award given annually to Jewish individuals β€œwho have attained excellence and international renown in their chosen professional fields.” At the award ceremony in June, the prize was presented by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a longtime friend of Kraft. In his acceptance speech, Kraft told the audience that he would use the prize money to combat antisemitism and BDS (the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) movement. He also pledged $20 million towards the creation of a foundation that would do the same.

 

β€œWhen I was awarded the Genesis Prize in January, I promised to dedicate myself even more than before to fighting anti-semitism, BDS, and other efforts to delegitimize the state of Israel,” Kraft declared, β€œMy vision is to work to end the violence against Jewish communities. To counter the normalization of anti-Semitic narratives that question Israel’s right to exist, disguised as part of legitimate debate on campuses and in the media.”

 

Now we know specifically how Kraft will use the prize money. He’s teaming up with the Genesis Prize Foundation to launch a competition that will award $1 million in grants to groups that fight against BDS and the delegitimization of Israel. The competition, which is titled β€œSpeak Out Israel,” will disburse the funds (at a minimum of $50,000 per grant) to Israeli nonprofits that portray Israel in a positive manner.

 

β€œWe see our role as being a catalyst in helping to bring about the change we want to see in the world,” Genesis Prize Foundation president Steven Rakitt told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, β€œWe bring together philanthropists to respond to the most critical issues in our community. Given the sharp rise in anti-Israel sentiment around the world, there is no question that we feel a responsibility to focus on combating this scourge.”

 

A press release on the group’s website includes a quote from Kraft detailing his personal connection to Israel. β€œIsrael is so special to me and my family,” he said, β€œIt’s where I took the love of my life on our honeymoon in 1963. Since then, I have sponsored dozens of missions and countless other trips for people to experience Israel for the first time. Spiritually, there is no place like it on earth. The more people learn about its history, its diverse culture and its innovation, the more we can do to change stereotypes and end antisemitism. That’s why Speak Out for Israel is so timely and important to Israel’s future.”

 

In the same week that the competition was announced, Human Rights Watch’s Omar Shakir became the first person to be expelled from Israel under the country’s BDS law. The law allows advocates for the movement to be denied entry into the country. Israel’s Strategic Affairs Ministry recommended that Shakir be barred because β€œhe frequently retweets and shares material about BDS.”

BBC under increasing criticism for biased reporting

 

It’s almost as British as fish and chips and a pint, but what used to be embraced by the masses as a reliable source of information, the BBC, is now under increasing scrutiny for its overt political bias. With the growing popularity of social and alternative media, Brits are no longer taking as gospel what is pumped out by, this publicly funded service which is increasingly coming under fire for being nothing more than a propaganda machine for the sitting government. The hashtag #BBCbias has been trending for some time now on Twitter, and with more and more commentators questioning the integrity of this public service, it’s clear that the organisation needs to take a long hard look at itself.

 

Let’s take the issue of Scottish Independence for example. Coverage of this, and of the Scottish National Party has been demonstrated to be biased for years. A 2014 report by Dr John Robertson concluded that BBC reports in the run up to the Yes campaign consisted of β€œtypically a Westminster scare story, on the Yes campaign, mostly left unanswered and unchallenged” and that coverage had β€œnot been fair or balanced”. More worrying however, the research had illustrated that this biased reporting could well have had a negative impact on the independence movement: β€œwe have evidence of coverage which seems likely to have damaged the Yes campaign”. The revelations earlier this year by a senior BBC journalist, Allan Little, that his colleagues viewed it as their responsibility to demonstrate how β€˜foolish’ independence was, only adds to the case that coverage was far from impartial.

 

But despite the public outcry, it’s clear that few lessons have been learned. Much of the current criticism of the BBC is to do with its stance towards the Labour party led by Jeremy Corbyn. It couldn’t be more obvious from interviews by some of its top journalists – Andrew Marr for one – that there is an anti-Corbyn position, and in fact Corbyn has himself accused Marr in the past of β€˜establishment bias’. A report from 2016 only looked into coverage of the Labour leader by the mainstream media in general and concluded that there was a β€œmarked and persistent imbalance” in favour of sources critical to him. Furthermore, it singled out the BBC for using more β€˜pejorative language’ when referring to Corbyn and his party colleagues and it gave almost double the unchallenged airtime to people criticising the Labour leader than to his supporters.

New York (CNN Business)In a move that could shake up the internet, private equity firm Ethos Capital is buying the company that owns every .org domain on the web.

 

Ethos, which was founded in May 2019, is expected to close its deal to acquire the Public Interest Registry (PIR) during the first quarter of 2020. The sale price has not been released.

Now, nonprofits, which make up the majority of the .org domains, are panicking about the purchase, scampering to sign a petition spearheaded by the National Council of Nonprofits that calls for blocking the deal.

There are currently some 10 million .org domains on the internet. The petition against the sale has 8,900 signatures and counting, including organizations such as the Girl Scouts of America and YMCA.

The petition signers are worried that this purchase could come with increases in domain prices and censorship, according to SaveDotOrg, a website run by NTEN, a community of nonprofit tech professionals.

"The concern is not just about this purchase," Rick Cohen, Chief Operating Officer at the National Council of Nonprofits, said in an interview with CNN Business. "It is about this purchase, coupled with the removal of pricing caps that have protected nonprofits from exorbitant price increases on the .org domains they rely upon."

PIR was created in 2002 by the Internet Society, a nonprofit that provides leadership in internet-related standards, education, access and policy. The idea was to assign one specific organization to manage the top-level .org domain.

The firm's founder and CEO Erik Brooks said nonprofits shouldn't be concerned about big changes.

"Our motivation and intention is to grow and build this business for all stakeholders' benefits," Brooks told CNN Business, emphasizing that nonprofits have "nothing to worry about" regarding domain price increases.

"I totally empathize and understand the fear that the valid voices are expressing," he added. "The narrative has been hijacked a little bit."

This would not be the first time the .org domain was owned by a for-profit company. Verisign owned the Public Interest Registry from 1995 to 2003.

But this latest move brings concern for good reason: Ethos has only been in business for six months, and PIR is one of the firm's first investments.

Brooks previously worked at Abry Partners, where he invested in a domain registry called Donuts.

Nevett said Ethos wasn't its only suitor but was the best fit. He said, "I think it's a win for the Internet Society, and it's a win for PIR and its customers because we'll have more flexibility to invest in growth."

The current price of a .org domain is approximately $10 per year. A statement from the Internet Society states that Ethos plans on keeping the .org domain accessible and reasonably priced, but the price could increase it up to about 10% annually.

"If you have one domain, and the domain cost goes up by $1, it's not a big deal, obviously," said Nevett.

But he added it's a bigger hit for "domainers," or people who own website domains as an investment. "If you have 50,000 domains and you're sitting on them, then that is a bigger hit to your annual costs," Nevett said.

Although it's not a done deal, the sale will likely go through – that is, unless, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) steps in. It's not looking likely since The Internet Society already approved the deal with Ethos Capital. The sale is expected to finalize in January.

JDL Canada thugs attack York students then cry β€œanti-Semitism”

 

Canadian politicians are echoing fabricated claims of anti-Semitism after students rallying for Palestinian rights were attacked by a violent anti-Palestinian group at York University in Toronto last week.

 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has asserted that β€œviolence and racist chants” were directed at Jewish students, and blamed β€œanti-Semitism.”

 

But available evidence, including video, paints a completely different picture: It was pro-Israel extremists who attacked students protesting the presence of Israeli soldiers on their campus.

 

On 20 November, Reservists on Duty held an event at York University, hosted by Herut, a Canadian group affiliated with Israel’s far right.

 

The organizers billed the event as an opportunity to hear from β€œreal Israeli soldiers.”

 

Campus group Students Against Israeli Apartheid said it decided to protest the event because, it alleges, the β€œIsraeli military, using Herut as a vessel, has been seen actively recruiting on campuses across Canada which is, in fact, illegal.”

 

Yet when the students showed up to rally for Palestinian rights, they say they were met with violence and intimidation.

 

β€œPalestinian students and students who turned up in support were assaulted and violently attacked during the rally,” according to Students Against Israeli Apartheid.

 

β€œMarshals and nonviolent protesters were kicked, spat on, shoved and were subjected to racist, sexist and Islamophobic slurs.”

 

SAIA alleges that β€œOne protester was choked with his scarf” by a member of the Jewish Defense League.

 

Another was punched in the back of his head and taken to hospital, according to SAIA.

 

One anti-Palestinian activist was caught bragging on Facebook that β€œone of my boys knocked one of their guys out” and he was β€œout cold for like 10 minutes.”

 

Yet requests that campus security remove the Jewish Defense League members who were β€œthreatening and assaulting protesters” were ignored, SAIA says.

 

Israel supporters reportedly attempted to steal students’ phones and have admitted to stealing Palestinian flags in order to beat students with the flagpoles.

Mr. Sandy’s testimony blew up Schiff’s claims that President Trump withheld military aid from Ukraine unless they agreed to investigate the Biden crime family.

 

President Trump has insisted that he wanted to make sure that Ukraine, one of the most corrupt countries in the world, was moving away from its years of corruption before he handed them hundreds of millions of dollars from American taxpayers.

According to Mr. Sandy, President Trump began asking questions about the military aid in June and by July 18, he decided to temporarily withhold aid.

β€œI recall in early September an email that attributed the hold to the President’s concern about other countries not contributing more to Ukraine,” Sandy said. He even said that OMB officials were asked to give information β€œon what other countries were contributing to Ukraine.”

This is consistent with President Trump’s other policies including NATO and the UN where he has asked other countries to pull their weight and pay their fair share.

 

Trump is sick and tired of other countries taking advantage of America’s generosity β€” he has every right to conduct foreign policy how he sees fit.

The President and others in the administration met with and spoke to newly-elected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky five times before the aid was released on September 11.

The aid was released to Ukraine 3 weeks early and Zelensky did nothing in order to receive the aid β€” no pressure, no quid pro quo.

Israel: Lieberman to reject giving immunity to Netanyahu

 

Head of Yisrael Beiteinu party Avigdor Lieberman stressed on Monday that he would reject holding a Knesset committee meeting to discuss providing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immunity, Quds Press reported.

 

This came just one day after he said that he would support Netanyahu’s efforts to form the House Committee in the Knesset in order to discuss his claim for immunity regarding the corruption cases against him.

 

β€œThe prime minister said he doesn’t need immunity,” Haaretz quoted Lieberman saying, arguing that a court decision would be β€œthe only thing that would be accepted by all citizens”.

 

β€œTo set up the committee 15 days before the dissolving [of parliament], it is clear that it will be a personal committee that will deal with only one subject or one person,” said Lieberman.

Audi To Slash 9,500 Jobs As Global Auto Industry Implodes

 

Audi has made arrangements to slash 9,500 of its 61,000 workers in Germany over the next five years to streamline its business ahead of a period where the global economy is expected to grow below trend, Automotive New reported.

 

Though Audi’s investor relations has spun the massive job cuts as a way to transition the company into a sustainable path of investing in the future of electric cars, the actual reason for the cuts is because the global automobile industry is collapsing.

 

The epicenter of the automobile downturn is in China, India, Germany, and Japan. Some industry hubs in the US have already been affected.

 

Audi sales have plunged, and revenues and operating profits are down in the first nine months of 2019. The upcoming restructuring is in preparation for the company to weather the economic storm.

 

Audi will save at least $6.6 billion from the cuts, which will allow it to channel money into building out its electric car segment and create several thousand green jobs.

 

Audi said in a statement on Tuesday that the cuts would β€œtake place along the demographic curve – in particular through employee turnover and a new, attractive early retirement program.”

 

β€œThe company must become lean and fit for the future, which means that some job profiles will no longer be needed and new ones will be created.”

 

Audi employs 90,000 people around the world β€” 60,000 of those are in Germany.

 

It’s not just Audi that is experiencing a slowdown in sales. Other major German auto manufacturers are feeling the pain as the slowdown is expected to continue through 2020.

 

Audi survived the 2008 financial crisis by slashing its workforce well ahead of the crisis. This time isn’t different.

 

Audi CEO Bram Schot said, β€œIn times of upheaval, we are making Audi more agile and more efficient. This will increase productivity and sustainably strengthen the competitiveness of our German plants.”

Houthis: Ex-Saudi kings behind assassination of ex-Yemen president

 

Former Saudi Kings Khalid Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Fahd Bin Abdulaziz and the latter’s brother Sultan have been named as the officials involved in the assassination of former Yemeni President Ibrahim Al-Hamdi.

 

The Houthi-aligned National Salvation Government (NSG) yesterday said it possessed official documents which provide evidence confirming Riyadh’s involvement in all stages of Al-Hamdi’s targeting on 11 October 1977. The kings were princes at the time of the killing.

 

The Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni news site published excerpts of the report that outlined the Saudi role on the back of β€œcredible evidence”. According to the news website, the β€œimportant document” on Al-Hamdi’s assassination was obtained in 2017.

 

The report notes that Sultan was in direct contact with the Saudi military envoy in North Yemen’s capital Sanaa, Colonel Saleh Al-Hadyan at the time of the targeted killing. Allegedly, Riyadh dispatched three Saudi intelligence operatives to Sanaa hours before the assassination.

 

The report pointed out the position of former President Al-Hamdi against Saudi attempts to ignite the war between the two parts of Yemen, by pushing the north to fight the south. It has been said that Al-Hamdi was killed two days before a planned and unprecedented visit as a North Yemeni president to South Yemen.

 

According to US magazine Time, the charismatic Al-Hamdi is still widely revered in the country. β€œHe had attempted to rid Yemen of tribal loyalties and had begun to make important social and political changes when he was killed. He is considered the best President to have ruled Yemen in the eyes of the majority of the Yemeni people.”

 

Last year in Hudaydah, a Saudi drone was used in the targeted killing of former President of the Supreme Political Council (a forerunner to the NSG), Saleh Al-Sammad, who expressed National Vision 2018, emphasising national sovereignty and independence, which contradicts Saudi’s vision of Yemen as a β€œbackyard” to the kingdom.

Where Comedy Ends and Hasbara Begins

 

Two days ago at the ADL conference Jewish Zionist comedian Sacha Baron Cohen criticised the internet and social media companies for allowing freedom of speech. This grotesque character who has made a career of marginalising oppressed minorities by depicting stereotypical characters and then ridiculing them is now calling on social media to adopt gag orders and to move us further into an Orwellian realm.

Huge Bets (options) That Gold Could Triple to $4,000 Trade in New York

 

The gold options market saw $1.75 million in block trades betting the precious metal could almost triple in more than a year, surpassing the record.

 

Around noon in New York, 5,000 lots for a gold option giving the holder the right to buy the precious metal at $4,000 an ounce in June 2021 changed hands. The bets were sold at $3.50 an ounce.

 

β€œIt’s like 18-month term life insurance; what will the world look like if gold is at $4,000,” Tai Wong, the head of metals derivatives trading at BMO Capital Markets, said in an email. β€œThey are hoping for a quick violent move,” he said, referring to the people who bought the call options.

 

Gold futures climbed to a record $1,923.70 an ounce in 2011 as the Federal Reserve bought over $2 trillion of debt to stimulate the U.S. economy. While bullion has rallied 14% this year, the precious metal is still 24% below the current all-time high.

 

The metal, which traded at $1,462.50 an ounce at 12:57 p.m. in New York, will need to almost triple to make the call options profitable for its holder.

This is just an option trade on paper however the holder had to put the capital down to execute this call (long-side bet). No physical will trade hands whether it goes up, down or treads water. The premiums are already fairly high @3.50/contract. This is because someone has to take the other side of this trade.

Going to lose money because of the time factor-this is independent of where the commodity trades. Time-slip equals loss.

THe better bet would be to avoid the CME options cesspool (which is heavily manipulated) and buy real metal.

What if that was the end goal - a new terror group, encouraged by our withdrawal. What if that was the cabal's plan all along and the cards were deliberately stacked against our military commanders?

U.S. Capitol Police arrested a man for removing his clothing and exposing himself at an office building for senators and their staff.

 

An officer approached a man who was removing his clothing Tuesday afternoon in the hallway of the Russell Senate Office Building.

 

β€œWhen the officer made contact with the suspect, he removed his underclothes, exposing his genitals,” Capitol Police spokeswoman Eva Maleki told the Washington Examiner.

 

Maleki said the man, who was not named, was arrested and charged with indecent exposure.

Consequently we now live in a world where the creation of wealth is seen by many as requiring little more than the creation of more money.

 

In this kind of world, why not have socialism? If we run out of money, we can always print more.

Unlimited Money Feeds the Myth of Unlimited Real Resources

 

The world was on a watered down version of a gold standard until 1971 when the US abandoned its solemn promise β€” the 1944 Bretton Woods Agreement β€” to back the dollar with gold at $35 per ounce. Gold backing of a currency provided a solid intellectual foundation of reality that few even recognized existed within themselves; (i.e., that we live in a world of scarcity and uncertainty). This reinforced the idea that wealth has to be built. It cannot be conjured out of thin air, just as gold cannot be conjured out of thin air.

 

But fiat currency can be conjured out of thin air and in enormous amounts. The longer a fiat currency is the coin of the land, the more one is led to believe that nothing should be in short supply, since everything is bought with money and money need not be in short supply. Those who know only unlimited fiat money soon demand free healthcare and free higher education as a right. And why not? Unlimited money will pay for it. Into this never-never land comes demands for scrapping the fossil fuel underpinnings of our modern economy by those who understand nothing of how an economy works. But, apparently one does not need to understand technical limitations, because there are no technical limitations. The "barbarous relic" (gold) had once limited the money supply and thusly seemed to limit the supply of vendible goods. Gold has been replaced by unlimited fiat money. Now it seems that unlimited aggregate demand can be funded by unlimited fiat money, leading to a world of plenty. Designer of the Bretton Woods Agreement Lord Keynes says so in this very insightful short video.

Fiat Money Turns the World Upside Down

 

The psychological impact of a lifetime within a fiat money economy cannot be underestimated. One's world is turned upside down. For many, financial success becomes prima facie evidence of exploitation of the masses rather than something to be admired and to which one could aspire also. With more wealth seemingly available at the click of a computer button, only an Ebenezer Scrooge would deny funding the latest demanded government program. If wealth is so easy to create, many conclude only greed and cruelty are what stand between us and far greater prosperity for all.

 

But that is the very reason that fiat money is so subversive to the social order. In a sound money economy any new spending program can be funded only by an increase in taxes, an increase in debt, or by cutting existing funding. There is a real cost to each of these options. There is a real cost to printing money, too, but the cost is hidden. One does not see malinvestment at the time of money printing. Price increases are delayed and uneven, due to the Cantillon Effect whereby the early receivers of new money are able to purchase goods and services at existing prices. Later receivers or those who do not receive the new money at all suffer higher prices and a reduction in their standard of living. Even then most people do not link higher retail prices with a previous expansion of the money supply.

Czech Prime Minister Rejects Germany's New Plan to Distribute Refugees Among EU States

 

PRAGUE (Sputnik) - Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis on Wednesday rejected the recently proposed German initiative for a quota-based distribution of migrants among EU countries and said that the constantly resurfacing discussions on the matter were confusing.

 

Earlier in November, Germany came up with a plan to reform the asylum procedures for irregular migrants arriving in Europe to allow them to get registered and distributed among EU states while still behind the outer borders of the continent. If a migrant is approved for further passage, the country they are assigned to will have to accept them and take care of all further legal procedures.

 

"We reject illegal migration as a matter of principle. We also reject letting smugglers decide who is going to live in Europe. We reject quotas. I do not understand why there is constantly someone bringing this topic up to the negotiating table. I hope that it will stop within the new European Commission", Babis said.

 

He stressed that it was the Czech people that the government cared about most of all.

For years, those who have been following and even participating in the benefits of psilocybin have understood and read about the ability of magic mushrooms to combat a number of ailments. From helping the terminally ill come to grips with their own mortality to treating PTSD and depression β€” psilocybin has a wide range of benefits. Beige Book Finds Expansion Remains "Modest"; Employers Bring Back Retirees To Fill Job Openings

 

One month after the Fed "modestly" downgraded its outlook on the US economy from "modest to moderate" growth to "slight to modest pace", there were no notable changes in the latest, just released November Beige Book, in which the Fed said that at the national level, economic activity expanded "modestly" from October through mid-November, similar to the pace of growth seen over the prior reporting period.

 

The good news for the US economy, which for the past two quarters was almost entirely driven by consumer spending is that most districts reported "stable to moderately growing consumer spending", and increases in auto sales and tourism were seen across several Districts, even if St Louis noted that "multiple auto dealers continued to note seeing an increased preference for used and low-end vehicles."

 

In welcome news for the US manufacturing recession, more Districts reported an expansion in the current period in manufacturing, than the previous one, even though the majority continued to experience no growth. Meanwhile, the picture for nonfinancial services remained quite positive, with most Districts reporting modest to moderate growth. Some more perspectives on the economy from sectors including:

 

  • Transportation activity was rather mixed across Districts. Reports from the banking sector indicated continued but slightly slower growth in loan volumes.

  • Home sales were mostly flat to up, and residential construction experienced more widespread growth compared to the prior report.

  • Construction and leasing activity of nonresidential real estate continued to increase at a modest pace.

  • Agricultural conditions were little changed overall, remaining strained by weather and low crop prices.

  • Activity in the energy sector deteriorated modestly among reporting Districts. Outlooks generally remained positive, with some contacts expecting the current pace of growth to continue into next year.

 

While the economy was roughly unchanged over the past month, the Fed founds that employment continued to rise slightly overall, even as labor markets remained tight across the U.S. Several Districts noted relatively strong job gains in professional and technical services as well as healthcare, while reports were mixed for employment in manufacturing, with some Districts noting rising headcounts while others noted stable employment levels and one District reported layoffs. And while there were scattered reports of labor reductions in retail and wholesale trade, the prevailing complaint was one of continued labor shortages as the vast majority of Districts continued to note difficulty hiring driven by a lack of qualified applicants as the labor market remained very tight.

 

The shortage of workers spanned most industries and skill levels, and some contacts noted that their inability to fill vacancies was constraining business growth with multiple contacts reporting "bringing back retired workers as a way to fill openings." Moderate wage growth continued across most Districts, and the Fed said that wage pressures intensified for low-skill positions, even if reports from both the BLS and Umich shows that wage growth has now peaked and is moving lower.

Sa'ar to 'Post': Netanyahu can't drag country to elections forever

 

Likud leadership contender Gideon Sa’ar criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempts to remain in office despite his inability to form a government, in an interview with The Jerusalem Post that will be published in full on Friday.

Sa’ar said he would have voted for a government under the prime minister’s leadership despite the corruption indictments against him, had Netanyahu been able to build a coalition, because he would have proven he had the support of the people. But because of Netanyahu’s inability to form a government, Sa’ar cannot understand why the Likud leader continues clinging to power.

β€œIt is quite clear he unfortunately cannot form a government and won’t be able to in the foreseeable future,” Sa’ar said in the interview, which was conducted in English. β€œI don’t fully understand. If there is no practical horizon to form a government, I don’t know what he gets from what he is doing.”

Questioning Netanyahu’s behavior, he asked: β€œWhat’s the horizon? Where is the hope? You can’t drag the country to elections forever.”

Sa’ar also criticized Netanyahu for not changing the legal system during his many years as prime minister, and now complaining that it has harmed him personally.

β€œThe prime minister has been in power for more than 10 years consecutively, and nothing was done,” he said. β€œA ruling party should work to change the reality according to its policies, using all practical tools it has. Instead of doing that, we are going to demonstrations against the executive branch that we control.”

Sa’ar has been attempting to initiate a snap leadership primary in his Likud Party ahead of the December 11 deadline to form a government and to prevent a third election in under a year. His hope was that he could defeat Netanyahu, and then form a broad national-unity government encompassing Blue and White, all the parties in the Likud’s right wing-religious bloc.

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, or the BRICS economic bloc, are engaging in discussions to issue cross-national digital money in order to reduce the dependence of their economies on the United States, as reported by Cointelegraph on Nov. 14. What will the new cryptocurrency look like, how does the BRICS group plan to use it and are there any existing projects underway that seek to achieve a similar goal of independence on such a high level?

 

BRICS and its problems

 

BRICS is the largest geopolitical block of countries, spanning three continents and wielding substantial economic power in global affairs. As of 2018, the five nations of the BRICS block had a combined nominal gross domestic product of $40 trillion, or about 23.2% of the gross world product.

 

However, such economic power does not come without competitive penchants from other nations that are vying for the markets that BRICS nations cater to. The greatest competition comes from the European Union and the U.S.

 

The political experience of recent years has shown that BRICS countries’ diplomacy has arguably failed in alleviating international sanctions, especially in politically sensitive markets such as the arms and the energy carriers markets. The idea of a single cryptocurrency as a means of payments and value transmission is not a new one, but it is one that is being actively purported not only in countries like Venezuela with its Petro, but also among BRICS countries. The advantages of a single cryptocurrency as a universal means of settlements among BRICS nations would solve many of the problems they face on the global economic market.

A means of circumventing U.S. sanctions

 

The BRICS Business Council discussed creating a common cryptocurrency as a potential solution to these problems during the 11th BRICS summit that was held in Brazil on Nov. 13–14, according to reports that cite Kirill Dmitriev, a member of the council. Dmitriev, who is the director-general of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, went on to say that an efficient BRICS payment system could be used to stimulate settlements between the countries while reducing the use of the U.S. dollar for these purposes.

 

It was also reported that the new system may become an alternative to the international payment mechanism SWIFT to facilitate trade with countries under U.S. sanctions.

 

Dmitriev also noted that in recent years, the share of U.S. dollars payments made between the BRICS countries has significantly decreased. In Russia, for example, over the past five years, the share of USD in foreign trade transactions fell from 92% to 50%, while those made in the Russian ruble rose from 3% to 14%.

 

At the same time, the potential for reducing the U.S. dollar’s dominance is still great, according to macroeconomic analyst Oleg Dushin, who told Russian media outlet BFM that such could be the case if Russia and India changed the currency they use to make payments between each other.

Despite clear warnings, Europe is out of IP addressesβ€”again

 

Last year, RIPE ran out of new IPsβ€”but this week, the used ones are gone, too.

 

Monday afternoon, RIPEβ€”RΓ©seaux IP EuropΓ©ensβ€”or the regional Internet Registry for Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asiaβ€”announced that it's out of IPv4 addresses.

 

What this means is that the organization has handed out its last available /22 (1,022 address) netblock. If you need European public IP addresses of your very own, you must get on a waiting list and hope for some other company to die on the vine and relinquish its address space when it does.

 

There are some caveats to RIPE's used-IPv4-address car lot, though. To get on the waiting list, you must never have received any subnet from RIPE in the past… and you may only receive a single /24 subnet. That gets you 256 total IPv4 addresses, three of which are used just to set the whole thing up (network, broadcast, and gateway). So if you plan to have more than 253 devices connected, you're going to need to get thrifty and figure out how many of them can be put behind NAT (Network Address Translation).

 

RIPE clearly hopes that its announcement will spur IPv6 address adoption, but that seems unlikely. End users remain largely unaffected by IP-address exhaustion; they can still connect to their ISP, get the temporary use of one of the ISP's IP addresses, and browse cat pictures with wild abandon. For the most part, small businesses are similarly unaffectedβ€”just like end users, they typically lease their IP addresses from a local ISP and fully expect to need to relinquish those addresses when and if they change Internet providers.

 

The real pressure address exhaustion puts is largely on startup Internet service providers. In order to offer Internet access to 10,000 people, you will generally need a netblock of 10,000 IP addresses to hand out to them. Without that netblock, you don't have much chance of becoming an Internet service providerβ€”and if you already are a large ISP, perhaps you're a bit cynical about anything that makes it easier for competition to creep in.

 

Of course, ISP in this case doesn't just mean last-mile carriers such as Spectrum, AT&T, or British Telecom. Cloud providers such as Azure, Digital Ocean, and Linode are also Internet Service Providers, and they cannot function without large blocks of IP addresses to lease to their customers. A lack of new IP addresses to allocate means a significantly raised barrier to entry for new players in either local or cloud ISP marketsβ€”and the likelihood of stagnation and protectionism on the parts of those who've already got theirs.

 

The only way to avoid this otherwise-inevitable slide toward an IP-address-based water empire is to leave IPv4's limitations behind entirely and migrate to IPv6. There are only 4.2 billion IPv4 addresses possible, but the IPv6 space consists of 340 undecillion individual addresses. Unfortunately, the very organizations in the best places to drive IPv6 adoptionβ€”large Internet service providersβ€”have arguably the least motivation to do so.

Allegory of the Cave

 

The allegory of the cave, or Plato's Cave, was presented by the Greek philosopher Plato in his work Republic (514a–520a) to compare "the effect of education (παιδΡία) and the lack of it on our nature". It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, narrated by the latter. The allegory is presented after the analogy of the sun (508b–509c) and the analogy of the divided line (509d–511e). All three are characterized in relation to dialectic at the end of Books VII and VIII (531d–534e).

 

Plato has Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners' reality.

 

Socrates explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not reality at all, for he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the manufactured reality that is the shadows seen by the prisoners. The inmates of this place do not even desire to leave their prison, for they know no better life. The prisoners manage to break their bonds one day, and discover that their reality was not what they thought it was. They discovered the sun, which Plato uses as an analogy for the fire that man cannot see behind. Like the fire that cast light on the walls of the cave, the human condition is forever bound to the impressions that are received through the senses. Even if these interpretations (or, in Kantian terminology, intuitions) are an absurd misrepresentation of reality, we cannot somehow break free from the bonds of our human conditionβ€”we cannot free ourselves from phenomenal state just as the prisoners could not free themselves from their chains. If, however, we were to miraculously escape our bondage, we would find a world that we could not understandβ€”the sun is incomprehensible for someone who has never seen it. In other words, we would encounter another "realm", a place incomprehensible because, theoretically, it is the source of a higher reality than the one we have always known; it is the realm of pure Form, pure fact.[1]

 

Socrates remarks that this allegory can be paired with previous writings, namely the analogy of the sun and the analogy of the divided line.

Garner NC Cancels Christmas Parade

 

The Town of Garner has decided to cancel the 2019 Garner Christmas Parade, which was scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, due to concern that the event could be targeted for disruption.

 

According to a press release, the Town said they are β€œespecially concerned about the possibility of bystandersβ€”including childrenβ€”being caught in the middle of disruptive actions. Town officials apologize for the inconvenience and disappointment the parade cancellation may cause; however, the Town’s foremost responsibility is always to ensure public safety.”

 

Officials are concerned one parade entry, Sons of the Confederate Veterans, could cause problems. According to WRAL, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans march in the parade each year.

 

Garner’s annual tree-lighting festival, Light Up Main, will proceed as planned on Friday, Dec. 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Main Street in historic Downtown Garner.

The international development secretary was ordered by the PM to cut short an African trip to fly back to the UK.

 

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg said a source told her that Ms Patel would rather resign than be sacked.

 

Ms Patel apologised about meetings with Israeli politicians in August.

 

But there are now questions about further meetings held in September.

 

Ms Patel arrived via the back door of Number 10 for her meeting with the prime minister after flying back to London Heathrow from Uganda.

40 years ago, flight 901 was deliberately routed into the path of Mt Erebus, killing all 257 people on board.

 

The flight's navigation section changed the McMurdo waypoint co-ordinate stored in the ground computer system at approximately 1:40 am on the morning of the flight. Crucially, the flight crew of Flight 901 was not notified of the change.

 

So, was this a cabal hit, did they target the plane to kill just one?
