Have been listening to the Youtube channels since yesterday's drops, and a TON of speculation on there about how or why the NG would be activated, and what it would have to do with Saudi Arabia.

In case it has not been covered here in the breads, here is an explanation of how it sort of works. Firstly, there are Guard units, and there are Reserve units in every state. Guard is funded by the State, and under control (supposedly) of the Governor. Reserve is funded by the Fed Gov. People often get these confused or lump them together. Secondly, NG units have what are called different 'taskings' to support active duty missions. A tasking could consist of a 'package', for example maybe a field medical unit and its staff. Or maybe a flight of F-16s with their support crews and equipment. It does not need to be the whole NG unit en-mass, it can be elements within the larger unit.

So it is perfectly possible for select people to get 'tasked', called up to active duty and sent to Saudi Arabia, for example. It would depend on the job descriptions in that tasking. There is a method of funding and counting the days of duty, but I don't remember how it works. Also, when being tasked, those assets are no longer under control of the Governor, if memory serves correctly.

So, as another example, when Gov. Brown says he won't allow his NG units to go here or support some mission….haha….well depending on who is tasked, he would not be able to do a thing about it.

There are probably political advantages at work here also, depending on who in which branch of the military is loyal to Potus. Military tasking is a big complex thing, and we have the best logistics in the world for coordinating these deployments. Hope this sheds some light on what could be going on with the NG and why.
