This memo takes a closer look at what lays behind different benchmark interest rates. Particular emphasis is put on how the different practices for quotation can explain why Nibor’s risk premium has on average been higher than the premiums in USD Libor and Euribor. Key: Benchmark rates, risk premia, IBOR, FX swaps, money market. 1.Introduction “IBOR” means Inter Bank Offered Rate. These four letters are common for the term reference rates in many countries around the world. In Norway, the term reference rate is Nibor. In the euro area it is Euribor and in the US it is Libor. In general, IBORs can be decomposed into two factors: the expected average level of the short-term (overnight) rate and a risk premium. The expected average of the overnight rate is closely linked to the central bank’s key policy rate, and thus reflects expected monetary policy over the relevant horizon. The risk premium can potentially reflect several things. One element is the credit risk associated with the panel of banks quoting the rates. Another is the liquidity premium that expresses the scarcity or abundance of money market credit in that particular currency over that particular horizon.

Since 1998, Libor has been defined by the panel banks’ daily answer to the following question: “At what rate could you borrow funds, were you to do so by asking for and then accepting interbank offers in a reasonable market size just prior to 11 am?” This question is posed in a way that defines Libor as an interbank offered rate. However, recognizing the fact that interbank term transactions are rare, the administrator of Libor, ICE Benchmark Administration Limited (IBA), has laid out a roadmap for the transition of Libor to a new “waterfall methodology”. This methodology entails a new output statement for Libor: “A wholesale funding rate anchored in LIBOR panel banks’ unsecured transactions to the greatest extent possible, with a waterfall to enable a rate to be published in all market circumstances”. The term “waterfall” refers to the ordering of inputs for the submissions into three levels. To the extent available, panel banks should base their submissions on Level 1 input, which are “eligible wholesale, unsecured funding transactions”. If no such eligible transactions were made, submissions should be transaction-derived (Level 2). That means utilizing time-weighted historical eligible transactions adjusted for market movements, and linear interpolation. If neither Level 1 nor Level 2 inputs are available, panel banks should base their submissions on expert judgement (Level 3). One important feature of the new methodology is that the eligible transactions are no longer limited to interbank loans. The eligible transactions are rates paid by banks on unsecured term deposits, as well as fixed rates paid on primary issuances of commercial paper (CP) and certificates of deposits (CD). The major part of CP and CD funding comes from investors outside the banking system, like money market funds and non-financial corporations.

A curious coincidence, I'm sure. On the free (with ads) movie streaming site tubitv.com, a 2013 film starring Jason Statham called Redemption was featured less than two weeks ago. In the film, the lead character works for a Chinese crime gang, with one of their rackets being child trafficking. Literally, shipping kids in boxes en mass within shipping containers. In one scene, a live body count was conducted, wherein children still alive in the boxes are directed to extend their arms through a hole, then make a fist. A truly horrific scene the director felt was necessary to show as part of the plot. The children are never rescued, the subject never brought up again.

 

I posted about the film soon after watching, with the intention to illustrate that Hollywood thinks that was just fine to include as part of entertainment, that trafficking children in shipping containers is a thing. Hollywood is aware, and many of them likely profit from it, or abuse the children.

 

I noticed a few days ago that the movie was removed from the tubitv listings. Hmm… Guesses: Someone alerted them. A White Hat knocked on their door (a cryptic anonymous email). A patriot who read about it on QR sent them a cryptic email.

Due to the decline of unsecured interbank lending resulting from the collapse of Lehman Bros. in 2008 and then the 2012 LIBOR scandal, it was clear that IBOR was no longer fit-for-purpose. Therefore, National FSI regulators mandated a replacement for all interbank offered rates (IBOR) including LIBOR, EONIA, EURIBOR, CIBOR, NIBOR and STIBOR – all used massively in the financial industry and markets globally. The financial industry has now started the transition from the typically non-transaction[1] based IBORs to the chosen transaction-based risk-free alternative reference rates (ARR) [2]. These new rates differ from IBOR in the following ways:

 

ARRs are constructed differently to IBOR. ARR’s are overnight rates, borrowed partially on a secured basis – depending on the currency

ARR’s reference actual market transactions

ARRs are nearly risk-free because they are anchored to National Bank reserves, whereas IBOR reflects the perceived credit risks between panel banks

Fixings for ARR rates, therefore, tend to be lower. This could mean, that a trade transitioning from IBOR to an ARR has a different market value over time than it otherwise would have had.

The successful adoption of the new reference rates is expected to be a long and time-consuming effort. The respective national reserve banks have invited major banks, authorities, associations, selected investment companies, insurance companies and corporates to participate in working groups to discuss approaches and post recommendations for the transition. The deadline for this transition has been extended to the end of 2021

 

However, the timing of this event is suspicious given the WE Forum's plans for a Great Reset in Jan 2021 to replace Capitalism with something they dreamed up

Former Broward Sheriff Scott Israel hospitalized after testing positive for COVID-19

 

Israel’s hospitalization was confirmed by a campaign spokesperson on Wednesday.

 

Israel released a statement reading in part, “I am in a local hospital for further evaluation. After experiencing symptoms over the past several days and at the urging of family and friends, I decided to take another coronavirus test. This time, unfortunately, the test was positive. Like most of you, I took precautions, followed the advice of health experts, wore a mask in public, washed my hands regularly and observed social distancing. Yet, despite this vigilance, I have contracted the virus.”

 

Israel is in his 60s and was last seen during a Monday night Zoom debate with other candidates for Broward Sheriff.

 

The former sheriff, who was stripped of his title by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis following the Parkland shooting, was replaced by current Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony.

 

While he is quarantined, Israel said his campaign will continue “in earnest.”

This month, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency announced it would enforce federal law that dictates that foreign students are not awarded F-1 student visas for the purpose of attending online courses.

 

On Tuesday, Trump’s administration dropped the requirement for F-1 foreign student visa holders to attend in-person classes, reopening the loophole allowing them to stay in the U.S. The move came after major pressure from Fortune 500 companies, the Chamber of Commerce, and a lawsuit by Harvard University and MIT.

 

While the Trump administration dropped the visa requirement, 15 House Republicans signed a letter lobbying ICE to allow foreign students to attend online classes to stay in the U.S. on F-1 visas.

The Great Reset - rebuilding the global economy in a fairer, greener way as we come out of the coronavirus pandemic - will also require societies to battle and beat racism.

 

In his closing words at Wednesday's launch of the project, World Economic Forum Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab chose to cite Nelson Mandela, a man imprisoned for years for fighting institutional racism in apartheid South Africa and who became the country's president.

 

"I stood, 21 years ago, together with Nelson Mandela in Davos on the stage when he said: ‘We should lay the scourge of racism, of divisiveness to rest. This requires strong, democratic institutions and (the) will of everybody and the culture of compassion. None of this is possible without a strong economy and a cohesive society."

 

While much of the Great Reset will be about environmental sustainability and the better use of technology, it is also about seeking greater fairness and less inequality.

 

"The COVID-19 crisis has shown us that our old systems are not fit any more for the 21st century," Schwab said in his opening statement. "It has laid bare the fundamental lack of social cohesion, fairness, inclusion and equality."

 

We could try to go back to the world we had before the pandemic, he said, but that risked "the amplification of many of the trends we see today: polarisation, nationalism, racism and ultimately social unrest and conflicts."

 

A great reset of how the economy and society run would do the opposite, he said.

 

It was also a time to support those who had been left behind. Juliana Rotich, Venture Partner at Atlantica Ventures in Nairobi, said we were at an inflection point.

 

"There’s an opportunity to centre the reset on those who are most vulnerable, those on the edge where it only takes something like a pandemic to slide into poverty."

 

Other speakers at the launch echoed Schwab's concerns about inequality and racism.

 

Microsoft President Brad Smith made a direct reference to the racial conflict in his own country, and how the Great Reset could be part of the solution.

 

"Data, and technology more broadly, are indispensable tools to solving almost any of the problems that we confront," he said.

 

"And so when it comes to protecting people’s fundamental rights, as we are seeing in the United States today, we have been focused for several years on using data to shine a light on disparities, for example, between the practices of police on African-Americans and blacks in the United States in comparison with other populations - that is a slice of what we’ll need to address around the world."

 

In a passionate address, Kristalina Georgieva, the head of the International Monetary Fund said the Great Reset would result in a "greener, smarter, fairer world".

 

"We know this pandemic, if left to its own devices, will deepen inequality," she said.

 

"But if we were to concentrate in investing in people, in the social fabric of our societies, in access to opportunities and education for all, in expansion of social programmes - then we can have a world that is a better world for all."

Police Investigating Most Intense Death Threats of Michael Savage’s Career: ‘Die Motherf**ker Die

 

The San Fransisco Police Department has launched an investigation into death threats targeting conservative radio icon Michael Savage, which included threatening language against President Donald Trump and the first family, Breitbart News has learned.

 

Savage, 78, has received two threats in the last seven days — one by postcard to his San Francisco home on July 10 and the second via Guerrilla Mail, an email address service where received emails are deleted after one hour.

 

Savage has posted photos of the postcard threat to social media, which reads with redactions: “On the road to xxx Mike could get hit by road ragers. Your sister. P.S. enjoy your xxx clerk coughed on.” The radio host has since directed his over 200,000 Twitter followers to send tips and/or other information to tiplinethreat@gmail.com. The postcard was sent using a non-profit stamp.

 

In a telephone interview with Breitbart News, Savage said an anonymous individual replied to his appeal for information on July 13, emailing a death threat containing antisemitic, violent, and sexually explicit content. The email also contained threatening language directed at President Donald Trump and his children.

 

Savage provided a copy of the email:

Asked if he was concerned for his safety, Savage said that while threats are par for the course if you’re a high-profile conservative in the media, he’s never received such a profane and twisted note in his over two decades in radio.

 

Savage said the culprit falsely claimed the radio host had recently dined at Alioto’s Restaurant, despite the Chinese coronavirus pandemic and a heart attack that has kept him away from the Sicilian-influenced seafood eatery for over nine months. “Alioto’s has been closed since Covid struck,” he noted. “It’s been open for over 90 years and been through two world wars, though it may not survive California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s lockdowns.”

 

“This is nothing new,” Savage then said of the threats. “Hitler used some of the sickest people in Germany to kill Jews. There are legions of people attacking people, just look at the protests we see today. They are turning the country into a burning cinder.”

 

“First, they go for the free speakers, then the First Amendment and on to the Second Amendment,” the radio host added. “It doesn’t happen overnight. The key is to silence the opposition akin to insurgencies like we saw in South Vietnam during the war.”

 

Savage — dubbed the “Godfather of Trumpmania”– then warned a defeat for President Trump in November’s presidential election could spell doom for America.

 

“A Biden presidency would be the end of this country,” he judged.

 

As of Wednesday, Savage said San Fransisco police haven’t circled back with any concrete leads, though directives have relayed the threatening language targeting President Trump and his children to the U.S. Secret Service. Savage added he personally notified members of the president’s “inner circle” of the email.

 

The San Fransisco Police Department declined to comment on the matter.

 

In March 2017, Savage was reportedly assaulted by a man “yelling insults” upon leaving a Marin County restaurant.

Poll: Majority Pennsylvania Voters Believe ‘Secret Trump Voters’ in Their Communities

 

The majority of Pennsylvania voters believe that there are “secret Trump voters” within their communities, a Monmouth University Poll released Wednesday found.

 

The latest Monmouth University Poll showed Joe Biden, the Democrat Party’s presumptive nominee, leading President Trump by double-digits in the critical battleground state, 53 percent to 40 percent among registered Pennsylvania voters. While three percent indicated that they will cast their vote for another candidate, four percent indicated that they remain undecided. Biden also appears to have an edge among independent voters, leading Tump 54 percent to 33 percent.

 

However, the majority of voters in the Keystone State believe in the underlying presence of “secret Trump voters” within their communities — voters who largely refrain from making their preference known, for a variety of reasons, but will cast their ballot in support of the president.

 

Fifty-seven percent of voters “believe there are a number of so-called secret voters in their communities who support Trump but won’t tell anyone about it.” Of those, 27 percent believe there are “many” secret Trump voters, while 17 percent said there are “only a few.” The remaining 13 percent said they were not sure how many “secret” voters are out there.

 

On the flip side, only 27 percent of respondents believe there are “secret” Biden voters.

 

“The suspicion that a secret Trump vote exists is slightly higher in swing counties (62%) and Clinton counties (61%) than in Trump counties (51%). The belief in a secret Biden vote is somewhat more prevalent in Trump counties (32%) than Clinton counties (23%) and swing counties (23%),” Monmouth found.

 

Voters remain relatively split on who they believe will ultimately win Pennsylvania in November, with 46 percent choosing Trump and 45 percent selecting Biden, despite the survey showing the former vice president leading Trump by double-digits. The phenomenon is likely driven by the widespread belief in “secret Trump voters.”

 

“The media consistently reports that Biden is in the lead, but voters remember what happened in 2016,” Monmouth University Polling Institute Director Patrick Murray said. The specter of a secret Trump vote looms large in 2020.”

 

The Trafalgar Group was among the first to focus on the existence of hidden Trump support, looking “for hidden preferences by asking people who their neighbors are supporting” in its surveys, as Breitbart News detailed in November 2016:

 

That question about neighbors allows respondents to present their preferences as the opinion of others, so minimizing possible fear of stigma or embarrassment for supporting Trump.

In Pennsylvania, the “neighbors” question boosts Trump’s score by 4.4 points, up to 52.8 percent. Similarly, Clinton’s score drops from 46.5 percent down to 40 percent. That shift converts a 2-point gap into a 12-point valley. The poll was conducted Nov. 3 to Nov. 45, with 1,300 respondents.

 

…When quizzed by Breitbart News about the reliability of a “hidden vote,” Cahaly offered several arguments for its existence.

 

His said his surveys during the primaries were unusually accurate, and also revealed hidden support for Trump, he said. The support was revealed when respondents were asked to respond to a computerized voice on the phone, versus when talking to a live person. “We did live callers and push-button [telephone polls] and we determined there was always a 4.5 point bounce for Trump [with computerized polls],” he said.

 

Trump ended up winning Pennsylvania by less than one percentage point.

 

Overall, Monmouth University concluded that Biden’s likely voter position “is similar to Clinton’s summer standing in the swing counties, where she led Trump by 50% to 40%” when compared to the Monmouth University Poll taken in August 2016.

 

“Interestingly, Trump is doing slightly better now in core Clinton counties than four years ago, when he was polling at 21% to 67% for Clinton. Biden, however, is currently stronger than Clinton was in the president’s base counties, where she was polling at 27% to 60% for Trump,” Monmouth University added.

 

The survey was taken July 9 – 13, 2020, among 401 Pennsylvania voters. The margin of error is +/- 4.9 percent.

This statement by United Nations Secretary General António Guterres sums up the momentous challenge ahead. As the world is still in the midst of the deadliest pandemic of the 21st century, with the number of cases still rising at the global level, immunization is our best chance of ending the pandemic at home and across the world — but only if all countries get access to the vaccine.

 

Covid-19 is wreaking havoc across the world, and no country will be spared its consequences, whether directly through loss of life and health, or indirectly through its impact on the economy, health services, education and many other parts of society. The pandemic is disproportionately affecting populations living in poverty and vulnerable situations.

 

Thankfully, great efforts, investment and coordination — largely facilitated by the World Health Organization (WHO) — are being directed at putting an end to the pandemic.

 

Vaccines are the most powerful public health tool and are critical for saving lives. Thanks to vaccines, we have seen good progress in reducing child mortality in recent decades.

 

At this point in time, with almost 200 potential covid-19 vaccine candidates currently at different stages of development, there is hope that soon one or more will prove to be both safe and effective. What happens next is equally important. This cannot be a race with one winner. When one or more vaccines are successful, it must be a win for all of us.

 

We cannot allow access to vaccines to increase inequalities within or between countries — whether low-, middle- or high-income. A future covid-19 vaccine can be instrumental in our commitment to achieve one of the key elements in the United Nations’ sustainable development goals: ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

 

However, manufacturing enough vaccines and doses to cover the whole global population will take time. While global cooperation in terms of resources, expertise and experiences is paramount for developing a vaccine, manufacturing and distributing it while leaving no one behind will truly put global cooperation to the test. But if we are successful, we can beat the virus and pave the way for recovery from the pandemic.

 

Therefore, we must urgently ensure that vaccines will be distributed according to a set of transparent, equitable and scientifically sound principles. Where you live should not determine whether you live, and global solidarity is central to saving lives and protecting the economy. A managed flow of the vaccine —including for humanitarian settings and other vulnerable countries such as the least developed countries and small island developing states — is the wise and strategic course of action and will benefit countries across the world.

 

Implementing an organized global flow of vaccines requires a strong multilateral mechanism ensuring mutual trust, transparency and accountability. A fair and effective vaccine allocation mechanism, guided by WHO advice and based on needs rather than means, should focus on saving lives and protecting health systems.

 

There are already local, regional and global initiatives to secure vaccine availability, including the important Covid-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) Facility; we believe these initiatives should be coordinated and mutually reinforcing. We particularly recognize the WHO’s role as the leading global health agency, but also ongoing efforts by Gavi (the Vaccine Alliance) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) as part of the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. We also acknowledge the role of the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in making vaccines available and accessible for vulnerable populations in developing countries and fully support the U.N. secretary general’s important leadership in ensuring a coordinated process.

 

A successfully managed vaccine distribution will also be a cornerstone of strengthening multilateralism for the future — as was the Security Council resolution on covid-19 drafted by France and Tunisia, demanding a global cease-fire in armed conflicts — and an important step toward coming back stronger together.

 

We call on global leaders to commit to contributing to an equitable distribution of the covid-19 vaccine, based on the spirit of a greater freedom for all.

Burning Ships in Iran Add to String of Dozens of Explosions and Fires

A large fire broke out at a shipyard in the southern Iranian port city of Bushehr on Wednesday, burning seven ships and sending plumes of black smoke billowing above the city skyline, according to videos and Iranian media reports.

 

The fire followed dozens of recent fires and explosions across Iran’s forests, factories and military and nuclear facilities in the past three months that have rattled ordinary Iranians. Iranian officials have said that some of the episodes may have been acts of sabotage but blamed weather, accidents and equipment malfunctions for the others.

 

On Tuesday an aluminum factory in the industrial city of Lamard, in Fars Province, caught fire. On Sunday, a fire broke out at petrochemical plant in Khuzestan Province.

 

An explosion at the country’s top nuclear facility in Natanz two weeks ago damaged the structure where centrifuges were assembled and has been attributed to Israeli sabotage.

 

There have also been explosions at two power plants, a chlorine gas leak at a chemical plant and an explosion at a missile production factory at a military complex in Tehran.

 

Some Iranian officials have said privately that they suspect that at least some of the fires and explosions were part of an American and Israeli military campaign against Iran, but no official has publicly said whether any of the incidents are linked or blamed any country or group for them.

 

Some analysts speculate that various enemies of the Iranian government — not just the United States and Israel but possibly domestic groups as well — may be seizing the opportunity to stoke chaos.

 

“There is a belief that those who want regime change in Iran are throwing everything they have at Iran to see which one would stick,” said Foad Izadi, a conservative political analyst in Tehran. The waves of explosions and fires, he said, are “creating this sense of instability and chaos and insecurity.”

 

No casualties were reported from the shipyard fire on Wednesday. Local officials said the flames were so extensive that they had to call in additional fire engines from the navy, the Revolutionary Guards Corp and a nearby nuclear plant.

 

The fire was tamed after about five hours, local media reported.

 

Jahangir Dehghan, Bushehr’s top crisis official, said the cause of the fire was unclear but that high winds and the fiberglass used in boat construction had contributed to its rapid spread, according to the Tasnim news agency. Fiberglass, however, is not generally flammable.

 

While government officials have not linked the fires and explosions, they have acknowledged that the number and frequency are unusual.

 

Aside from military and industrial fires, more than 1,100 forest fires in the past three months have burned more than 150 square miles of woodlands. Parliament called in the ministers of environment and intelligence to question them about the forest fires, at least a fifth of which were believed to been caused by arson.

 

Many Iranians and some officials suspect that the fires and explosions are part of a coordinated covert operation by the United States and Israel to pressure the Islamic Republic government to negotiate a new nuclear deal, or to provoke a military confrontation.

 

The July 2 explosion at Natanz was part of a yearlong covert operation by Israel and the United States, American and Middle Eastern intelligence officials have said. Intelligence officials said the blast may have set the Iranian nuclear program back as much as two years.

 

Israel and the United States have sabotaged Iran’s nuclear program in the past. But officials from both countries said they had nothing to do with the explosion at a missile production facility near Tehran in late June.

 

But there have been so many things burning or blowing up that Iranians are suspicious of everything.

Hossein, a writer in Tehran who also asked his last name not be used, said that when he took a taxi last week, the driver quizzed the passengers about which sites had exploded and which they predicted would be next.

 

In the absence of a clear culprit or claim of responsibility, the government has been struggling to respond.

 

Analysts said some of the episodes had clearly demonstrated that there were security gaps and intelligence moles within Iran’s most secure nuclear and military sites as well as industrial complexes.

 

Not responding to sabotage risks appearing weak and vulnerable, while retaliating could set off a military confrontation that could be costly and painful. Some officials also fear that a war could improve President Trump’s re-election prospects.

 

Hence the government has said little about the fires and explosions that have damaged a military base in Birjand, the state broadcasting headquarters in Tehran, a port near Bandarlengeh, a steel plant in Ahwaz and a petrochemical plant in Mahshahrtaken, to name a few episodes that took place over just five days last month.

 

Instead, the government is embracing what one official calls “strategic patience.”

 

“Iran is neither prepared nor wants a war,” Mr. Abdi said. “The reason it won’t even acknowledge publicly that they are sabotage is to save face and not be cornered into a response.”

 

But if the attacks escalate, analysts said, a military response would be inevitable.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have received a lot of attention after the pregnant supermodel revealed that the couple chose the sex of their baby while undergoing in vitro fertilization—and not all of it was friendly. Many took to Twitter to criticize the couple for picking a girl over a boy (and for undergoing IVF rather than adopting). But the act of picking an embryo of one sex versus the other is not as complicated or controversial a matter as it may at first appear. Teigen revealed the news that she and Legend are expecting a girl by choice in an interview with People magazine last week. “I’ve made this decision,” Teigen told People. “Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.’” The couple quickly received backlash for their choice, which Teigen (famous for her Twitter retorts) later defended online. “You'd be surprised at how many people you know go through this,” she wrote on Twitter. “Also every doctor knows the sex of the embryos, it isn't some grand secret.” (Teigen also joked that she “picked the embryo with a taste for bacon, a knack for magic and size 7 feet so she can always find shoes.”)

 

Teigen is right—plenty of couples undergoing IVF chose the sex of their baby, says Mark Surrey, M.D., medical director and co-founder of Southern California Reproductive Center. “It’s very common for couples undergoing IVF to choose the sex of their baby, because it is information that you can obtain by genetically testing the embryos for their chromosomes,” he says. “The gender is simply one of their chromosomes.” The gender is part of an elective IVF procedure called Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), in which a complete chromosomal analysis of each embryo is done. PGD was originally designed to help screen for genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis and Down syndrome, says reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist Jane Frederick, M.D., medical director of HRC Fertility in Orange County, California. The gender information came along with the screening, she says, and eventually couples starting requesting the testing for gender purposes.

 

However, Frederick says she mostly gets this request from couples that already have children and want to balance out the genders. “They really want to maximize the next pregnancy so it’s the last one,” she says. And, like Teigen and Legend, Frederick has found that most couples want to have a girl. “Eighty percent of the requests are ‘Can you get me a girl?’” she says. “It’s very female-driven and many women want to have daughters.” For PGD, a fertility clinic will grow an embryo to day five, at which point it has 100 cells, Frederick explains. One is removed and undergoes chromosomal testing to make sure it’s viable and healthy. “We can rule out all of the things that can cause an abnormal pregnancy,” she says. Frederick says the process doesn’t seem to damage the embryo or the baby that is formed from it, but she stresses that couples should make sure the clinic they use is accredited and has been doing this procedure for years. And, according to Surrey, the process is 99 percent accurate. Experts expect that even more couples undergoing IVF will request the testing in the future, but Frederick points out that PGD comes at an added cost to an already expensive procedure (it’s an additional $4,000 or more at some clinics). “Unfortunately, the technology is still expensive,” she says. “If we could offer this as part of the IVF cycle, I imagine we could eliminate a lot of genetic problems in addition to a healthy gender that a couple is striving for.” Teigen said on Twitter that she and Legend froze the other embryos for future use, and hinted that the next one will also be a girl—but the one after that is going to be a boy.

India Gold Smuggling Case Sparks Political Row

 

A political row has broken out in India after gold was found being smuggled into the country in diplomatic baggage.

 

Customs officials at the international airport in the southern state of Kerala found more than 30kg (66lb) of gold hidden inside bathroom fittings.

 

The package was addressed to the United Arab Emirates consulate in Thiruvananthapuram.

 

The UAE has denied any knowledge of the package and said a former local employee had been arrested.

 

Local reports suggest another person has also been detained.

 

In a statement on Twitter on Tuesday, the UAE's embassy in the Indian capital Delhi said an investigation had been launched after the discovery was made.

 

"The [Emirati] authorities have stressed that the culprits who not only committed a major crime but also sought to tarnish the reputation of the UAE mission in India will not be spared," the embassy said.

 

"We remain committed to cooperating with Indian authorities in getting to the root of the crime."

 

The UAE's ambassador to India told the Gulf News newspaper that the former worker at the consulate had been dismissed several months ago "because he was not doing his job".

 

The chief minister of Kerala has faced calls from the opposition to resign over the case, although he has denied any involvement. A senior official in the state has been removed from his post, however.

 

According to a report by Reuters news agency, the lack of international flights because of the coronavirus pandemic has led to a fall in the amount of gold smuggling to India, as well as a rise in the price of gold.

 

Somasundaram P.R., head of the World Gold Council's Indian operations told Reuters: "Smuggling can be expected to go down substantially in the current scenario. Smuggling logistics were also severely affected during lockdown.

 

He expects smuggled volumes this year to be significantly below the 115 - 120 tonnes of gold that was smuggled into India in 2019.
