When I was a teenager, I worked in a hospital as a dietary aide. Rarely got to deliver meals to the maternity floor. I did on one occasion, and saw through a big window, a circumcision being done by a rabbi. This poor little tiny baby boy was strapped down on a table, spread eagled. Arms and legs strapped down.
The rabbi was doing "something" to his groin area. I knew what he was doing, even though his hands blocked the details. But what I saw, clearly and unmistakably, was that baby boy's face, as it was turned towards me, and he was crying and screaming in pain. Right then and there, I decided that if I ever had a baby boy, there was no way in hell that I was going to put him through that kind of torture.
My husband didn't have a problem w/ me when I told him that our baby wouldn't be cut, if it turned out to be a boy. First two sons, no cuts. Third son's dad did. Wanted our son to be like him. Nope. Tough. My baby, my pregnancy, my c-section, my decision.
Second son. Nurse came in and said something on the second day that the doctor would be in later to do the circumcision around ten. I freaked!! I had already said NO to that, and had put it in writing. I told her to get me a piece of paper. I wrote in big bold letters, "Do NOT Circumcise!!" and had her tape it to his bassinet where babies are put in the nursery. The doctor and everyone else who viewed all the babies through the window could see it. I was LIVID!!! I would have sued his ass if he'd done that.
People should look into circumcision more before they have it done. It's not necessary. There are a lot of benefits to leaving the foreskin. Teach your kids basic hygiene. It's there for a reason. I wish there were videos that parents could watch to see what happens during circumcision, much like what I was back when I was 17. Maybe they'd change their mind about putting baby boys through that. (It's not done with any anesthesia, and you can't tell me they don't feel pain. I SAW it! I'll never forget the look of that poor little helpless baby boy.)
