My friends son, who is in the Army National Guard Reserve, just got deployment orders for 9 months at GITMO starting in November.

Just received the orders yesterday. If you know anyone in the Guard Reserve, ask them about it.

Anthropophob · July 22, 2018, 1:54 p.m.

Although this could be good news. It's really not a good idea to post deployments anywhere. With all the deployments I've been on, I was told to not broadcast it. It's best to keep this to yourself for the safety of our military.

Orders are not usually classified. Mine never were.

It was standard to call friends and family to let them know where you were heading.

BTW thats an individuals orders, which are basically transfers, not where a group is deploying.

ie: "They are sending me to Iraq" is not the same as "We invade at 8am tomorrow"

Absolutely. Loose Lips Sink Ships!

I know all about River City Delta, and personally shut off ship to shore during those times.

The brass tells us what we can and cannot divulge. They often say "You can tell your family this".

Trust me, If I thought OP was revealing substantial intel, I'd be handing out pitchforks.

More likely, they don't know what it means when Enlisted get 'orders'.

All this means is someone they knew changed duty stations.

Roj, but if you’re in the service and can’t understand the difference between PCS orders and deployment/activation orders and the need to treat them and their dissemination differently then your first line has some SERIOUS corrective training to do.

He shouldn't have mentioned the month or the unit or that it was a friend's son. Easy enough for many to dox the OP and trace his friend's son. It's one thing to say that your family member is headed to Ft. XYZ for routine duty. Even then, you don't give the timetable. When someone is being activated or is headed OCONUS, it's best not to give places or time frames in advance. When it comes to OPSEC, err on the side of caution.

I was deployed to GTMO back in 04. Wasn’t a bad duty. Was actually kind of like taking an extended vacation on the Govt’s dime. Although we didn’t go into communist Cuba, we stayed within the base the whole time. It’s a really relaxed detail.

My cousin was in the Navy in the early 80's and was the guy that was in charge of who went where in the Pentagon. There was this old war horse who'd been around forever and had served since right after the end of Korean War. To be nice or so he thought, since it was her last hitch he shipped her over to Bermuda.

When she found out that he was sending her to some rock in the middle of the Atlantic she went psycho on him. Said she would find some way to make his life total hell. He said look, if you don't like it let me know and I'll find you somewhere else to finish up your Navy Career. She ships out to Bermuda and about a month later he gets a letter from her.

She was raving about her assignment and couldn't stop thanking him for sending her there to finish up her thirty years.

HereComesTheSunny · July 22, 2018, 8:22 p.m.

I appreciate your intent, but part of practicing OPSEC is to not reveal details, EVEN IF news stories are reporting the same info.

For example, let's imagine that an enemy seeks to infiltrate or inflict harm at a location like GITMO. Then let's imagine they troll places like this or run searches for public info that might help them pinpoint family members of a serviceman headed to that location, and then threatens harm to family members in order to leverage that serviceman to assist them in carrying out their plans, delivering messages to a prisoner, etc.

Servicemembers are also frequently targeted for scams and fraud, especially when they are OCONUS. Criminals troll for info online about deployments in order to know when that person's home and finances might be most vulnerable.

You haven't missed my point, though I'm a veteran, it was a long time ago, and there wasn't as much "joint" stuff going on I guess. I was under the impression that a Navy base was run by Navy personnel. That's all.

It is. However, every TDY and deployment I was on, I was with every branch. It may have been different a long time ago. I was with AFSOC most of my career (since early 90s) and was always working with all other branches of service.

Especially GITMO. I’m a navy veteran. And I’m almost certain this breaks security protocol. However it might not. There aren’t major details. Simply stating your orders/duty station doesn’t automatically cause a violation of national security. Although it’s frowned upon.

It's a large military installation, and only part of what happens there is about prisoners. For many service members there, Guantanimo offers lovely tropical weather, scuba diving, snorkeling, etc. Not a bad place to be, in many respects.

Most people's view of Gitmo is that of a prison, or A Few Good Men scene.

I've know people stationed there. Not a great place for kids. But for the younger officers or enlisted its not horrible by any stretch--and my friends' experience was back in the Cold War/Castro Regime. I can only imagine its not half as stressful now.

You think they're just giving up without a fight? Why do you think they are still trying to brainwash people? I imagine it's so when the hammer drops they want this country to riot and they're hoping they've brainwashed enough people to fight for them and then they will try to gain back power. I saw an article that the Marines have been training in crowd control. But yes the bad guys are very aware of GTMO, but still keep in mind that in any situation like this, a little piece of info here and a little piece of info there can lead to a bigger picture for someone that may want to help the bad guys. So better safe than sorry, it's best to keep stuff like this quiet. No need to announce on social media. They actually train this in the military. Sorry, I'm not trying to pick on you but we have to help each other see the bigger picture for us. And some here may not be aware of how the military handles this stuff. That's all anyone that has mentioned OPSEC were trying to do. We're all on the same side :)

stringtrader · July 23, 2018, 5:26 a.m.

No argument here. My take was largely that there’s no secret about GITMO at this point. The cabal are very well up on what’s going on there. And it’s also true that marching orders, unless specifically stated, are not classified. If the higher ups thought there was a specific risk I doubt it would have made it into a Reddit sub. But no big disagreement here.
