Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb: Pfizer Pill Means Pandemic’s End ‘in Sight’

 

Appearing Friday on CNBC’s Squawk Box, former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb stated that the end of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. is “in sight” after Pfizer announced that its experimental antiviral pill slashed risk of hospitalization or death from the illness by 90 percent in a trial.

 

A transcript is as follows:

 

JOE KERNEN: Do you feel that this Pfizer drug has shown better efficacy than the Merck drug, with perhaps less concern about immunogenicity or other side effects?

 

DR. SCOTT GOTTLIEB: There weren’t comparative trials down. Bottom line is we have an overwhelming tool box right now to combat COVID. This is a phenomenal result. It exceeded any reasonable expectation… I think the bottom line is the end of the pandemic‚ at least as it relates to the United States, is in sight right now — given that we have the tools to combat this disease. Now, we still have to get through this Delta wave. Unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to vaccinate our way out of it. These therapeutics are coming too late to affect that wave of infection. But once we get through this Delta wave of infection over the course of the next two months, I think this therapeutic and other innovations that we’ve seen coming to market really mark the end of the pandemic in the United States.

US Orders American Citizens Out Of Ethiopia "As Soon As Possible"

The US State Department is now urging all Americans in Ethiopia to leave the war-torn country "as soon as possible". This after the US Embassy in Addis Ababa previously posted a "do not travel" advisory to its official website and began making preparations of its own to evacuate non-essential staff.

 

At the start of this week, the Ethiopian government went so far as to tell residents of the capital city of some 5 million people to start arming themselves as rebel Tigrayan fighters began a march southward from their northern enclave, with plans to overthrow the government under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

In recent days rebel commanders have claimed to be holding positions just outside the capital, after previously overrunning government positions in the town of Kemissie, some 200 miles to the northeast. A six month state of emergency, or what essentially gives authorities martial law powers over the civilian populace, went into effect on Wednesday. On the same day PM Abiy vowed that "Ethiopia will not collapse. Ethiopia will prosper."

 

"Ethiopia will forever exist with her honor by defeating all who test her through the blood and bones of her children," he added, after days prior saying the rebels will be buried "with our blood".

 

The rebel coalition led by Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which has been in an intense war that's included government airpower being used on the Tigray region, looks to be growing and poised to soon enter the capital. A new AFP report also strongly suggests increasing United States political involvement in support of the anti-government fighters:

 

Nine rebel groups battling Ethiopia's government will "collaborate and join forces" Friday, they said in a statement announcing the alliance, which comes as fears grow of Tigrayan fighters advancing on the capital.

 

The alliance, due to be signed in Washington later on Friday, includes the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which has been locked in a year-long war against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.

 

So now it appears Washington is playing host to an early seed form version of an "exile opposition government" - akin to what happened with Syria starting a decade ago.

 

"We... are pleased to announce the establishment of the United Front of Ethiopian Federalist and Confederalist forces," said Admassu Tsegaye, representative of Agew Democratic Movement, during a signing ceremony held in Washington. "This front is composed of forces fighting against the genocidal regime in Ethiopia."

At the same time US officials have increasingly denounced war crimes attributed to Ethiopian government forces. President Biden himself early this week slammed the Ethiopian government's "gross violations of internationally recognized human rights" and cut the country from a key US trade program, the African Growth and Opportunity Act - which gave it duty-free access to US goods. The move is seen as paving the way for further and more far-reaching sanctions, which would likely target top Ethiopian officials who are overseeing the war.

 

On Wednesday the US Embassy described the following preparations being made in the instance of war entering the Ethiopian capital: "The (State) Department authorized the voluntary departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and family members of emergency and non-emergency employees from Ethiopia due to armed conflict, civil unrest, and possible supply shortages."

Xi expands wartime mobilization powers as Taiwan tensions rise

 

China has granted the central leadership under President Xi Jinping greater control over mobilization for national defense without having to go through time-consuming legislative processes.

 

The changes will allow, for instance, the leadership to swiftly amend the National Defense Mobilization Law and broaden the age groups of civilians it would recruit when on a war footing. While the National People's Congress, China's parliament, is a rubber-stamp body, amendments to such laws typically involve two or three rounds of discussion by the NPC's Standing Committee, which meets roughly every one to two months. The move comes as tensions rise in the Taiwan Strait and is seen as an attempt by Beijing to prepare for a contingency.

 

Last month, the NPC Standing Committee adjusted the amendment process for four laws the National Defense Mobilization Law, the Civil Air Defense Law, the National Defense Transportation Law and the National Defense Education Law to concentrate powers in the central leadership. The National Defense Mobilization Law stipulates that men aged 18 to 60 and women aged 18 to 55 can be mobilized for national defense purposes if "state sovereignty, unification, territorial integrity or security is threatened." The recent decision will let the top leadership expand the age groups, for example, without going through the NPC.

 

The leadership has eyes on the growing tensions with the U.S. over Taiwan and the South China Sea. Washington has bolstered cooperation with Taipei and is working with the European Union and Japan to counter Beijing's growing influence. While U.S. President Joe Biden and Xi have agreed to continue dialogue, China is believed to be increasingly concerned by the possibility of a military contingency. China is also stepping up military recruitment efforts. Xi, who chairs the Central Military Commission, in October approved the extension of medical benefits to military personnel's parents, spouses and spouses' parents, the People's Liberation Army Daily reports. They will receive priority care at nearby facilities as well. China's roughly 2-million-strong military relies largely on voluntary enlistment, conscripting members when missing its quota. But it is believed to be hard-pressed to find enough recruits as the country has fewer children, more of whom are choosing to further their education instead. "You can't use your smartphone for months once you're at sea," a retired naval officer said. "More young people are saying they don't want to join, that they won't even be able to have romantic relationships while in the military." Beijing has been working to strengthen its influence over the minds of young Chinese. In October, the Communist Party's Publicity Department told regional TV broadcasters in Shanghai, as well as in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Hunan provinces, to curb production of entertainment programming.

 

The department took issue with content that promotes celebrity worship and told the broadcasters to correct course. The four regions serve as China's entertainment hub, and the warning was likely intended to send a message to TV stations nationwide. The Chinese authorities are also working to stoke patriotism and party loyalty among the general public to solidify Xi's grip on power ahead of the Communist Party congress in 2022 to choose the party's next leaders. They have instructed TV broadcasters across the country to incorporate the Xi Jinping Thought ideology and themes related to the Communist Party's ongoing centennial in scripted shows, documentaries, cartoons and elsewhere through the end of that year.

AFGHANISTAN – In August, just after the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, Joe Biden said, “If there are American citizens left, we’re going to stay until we get them all out.”

Over two months has passed since he made that statement, and there are still legal permanent residents (LRP), military family members, and school children stranded in the now-terrorist-run country.

 

According to State Department, the number of LRP’s look to be as much as 14,000 still stuck in Afghanistan. That number can’t be exactly verified because LPR’s are not tracked, nor are they required to report their whereabouts to the US.

“There were some small number of Americans in Afghanistan who didn’t want to leave who’ve now seen that we’ve successfully been able to get some of the few remaining Americans out who’ve now come forward and said, we do want to leave. And there are a couple of hundred of those who are ready to leave. And we will work to get them out.”

What Makes a Hero?

We all have an inner hero, argues Philip Zimbardo. Here's how to find it.

The situation provided the impetus to act heroically or malevolently. Why did some people choose one path or the other?

 

Another key insight from my research has been that there’s no clear line between good and evil. Instead, the line is permeable; people can cross back and forth between it.

 

This is an idea wonderfully represented in an illusion by M. C. Escher, at left. When you squint and focus on the white as the figures and the black as the background, you see a world full of angels and tutus dancing around happily. But now focus on the black as the figures and the white as the background: Now it’s a world full of demons.

 

What Escher’s telling us is that the world is filled with angels and devils, goodness and badness, and these dark and light aspects of human nature are our basic yin and yang. That is, we all are born with the capacity to be anything. Because of our incredible brains, anything that is imaginable becomes possible, anything that becomes possible can get transformed into action, for better or for worse.

 

Some people argue humans are born good or born bad; I think that’s nonsense. We are all born with this tremendous capacity to be anything, and we get shaped by our circumstances—by the family or the culture or the time period in which we happen to grow up, which are accidents of birth; whether we grow up in a war zone versus peace; if we grow up in poverty rather than prosperity.

 

George Bernard Shaw captured this point in the preface to his great play “Major Barbara”: “Every reasonable man and woman is a potential scoundrel and a potential good citizen. What a man is depends upon his character what’s inside. What he does and what we think of what he does depends on upon his circumstances.”

 

So each of us may possess the capacity to do terrible things. But we also posses an inner hero; if stirred to action, that inner hero is capable of performing tremendous goodness for others.
