Communist Chinese News Outlets Support and Promote the ‘Never Trump’ Lincoln Project

As mainstream media outlets across America write positive coverage about the Lincoln Project‘s ads attacking President Trump and the organization’s belief that “Trump and those who sign onto Trumpism are a clear and present danger,” another media source is promoting the group: Chinese Communist Party propaganda outlets.

China Global Television Network (CGTN) and China Daily — both deemed by the State Department as foreign agents — are operated by the Communist Chinese Party and have frequently voiced support for the group, as reported by the National Pulse.

Ceng Jing, editor for CGTN, wrote an op-ed piece detailing the group’s founding, purpose, and advertising campaigns with ads that play constantly on news channels and Youtube pages across America.

“A group known as the Lincoln Project has produced dozens of hit videos that quickly reached millions of views on Twitter and Youtube,” the communist Chinese publication editor wrote. “The videos’ success at ridiculing the American president, from his failure at handling the coronavirus pandemic to his sluggish walk down the ramp at West Point, has established the group as a leading voice in the online political crusade against Trump.”

The Lincoln Project is made of supposed Republicans seeking to defeat Donald Trump at the ballot box — going so far as to pledge their support for Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

The National Pulse also notes how the Chinese outlets are using the Lincoln Project’s attacks to distance China from taking responsibility for the pandemic.

CGTN writes that “the [Lincoln Project] puts the spotlight on Trump’s comments at the beginning of the pandemic in reaction to the delay in COVID-19 testing: “I don’t take responsibility at all.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is among the lawmakers linked to business interests that profited from the federal Paycheck Protection Program.

A Pelosi spokesman said the Democrat’s husband, Paul, is a small investor in the company that owns the El Dorado Hotel in Sonoma, located in northern California’s wine country, according to an Associated Press report published by SFGate.

Paul Pelosi owns 8.1 percent in the company, EDI Associates, which amounts to somewhere between $250,000 to $500,000, Pelosi’s office said.

“Mr. Pelosi is a minor, passive investor in this company,” Drew Hammill, deputy chief of staff to the House speaker, told the AP. “He was not involved in or even aware of this PPP loan.”

EDI Associates was loaned between $350,000 and $1 million.

To the watchdog group Common Cause, the prospect of lawmakers benefitting so directly from a program intended to help American businesses survive the coronavirus lockdowns doesn’t encourage voter trust.

“It certainly looks bad and smells bad,” Common Cause spokesman Aaron Scherb told the AP.

As of June 30, the Treasury Department has loaned out $521 billion. To date, it has only identified companies that were loaned more than $150,000.

AP’s review of the recipients shows that a shipping business started by Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao’s family received a loan. Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

According to the AP, Foremost Maritime Co. was founded by Chao’s parents. Her sister runs the New York-based company, which received between $350,000 and $1 million.

“Neither my wife, nor I, have anything to do with that business and didn’t know anything about it,” McConnell told the AP.

What COVID-19 therapy is the real “Game-Changer”?

There has been a tremendous amount of buzz regarding the use of hydroxychloroquine (HC) for the treatment of COVID-19. This has been touted as everything from a “game-changer” and “a gift from God” to begin mostly dismissed for lack of convincing evidence. The skeptics, me being one, have cited the majority of the literature demonstrating negative outcomes. Nonetheless, the pressure to forego formal clinical trials and urgently employ the drug in the face of many impending deaths of an epidemic has been enormous and completely understandable.

A survey reported 2 days ago of doctors around the world who have been managing COVID-19 patients place it as “the most effective coronavirus treatment” to date. The survey, conducted by Sermo, a global health care polling company, asked 6,227 physicians in 30 countries to find out what is the most effective against SARS-CoV-2.

That is to say, of 6,000+ doctors surveyed, 37% considered HC the most effective available. This begs the question what the other 63% considered more effective than HC and it also seems to highlight the sorry state of what we have available as treatment since the therapy considered most effective has mostly shown no beneficial effect in the small clinical trials conducted to date. They didn’t report all the breakdown of how the voting went and which were the other 14 drug choices these doctors were allowed to choose from, but it likely included the antivirals remdesivir, lopinavir, and ritonavir.

Aside from these clinical trials of various quality and weak or negative outcomes, there have been two recent striking clinical observations by clinicians that have played powerfully in the media because of the obviously striking outcomes. These are not clinical trials but rather anecdotal observations of larger populations of patients treated for presumed COVID-19 infections and they did not involve just hydroxychloroquine alone. But just because they are not rigorous clinical trials shouldn’t mean we should discard any clinical benefit that is so obvious that we don’t need a statistical analysis to reveal it particularly if corroborating reports are coming in from multiple observers.

The first one was reported by Dr. Vladimir Zelenko from Monroe, NY whereby he reported on March 21 that his team had seen about 900 patients with possible coronavirus symptoms, treating about 350 with his regimen of HC, azithromycin and zinc. None had died as of April 2nd, he said, though six were hospitalized and two were on ventilators. Despite the criticism that this was not a randomized controlled trial, still, if one can believe that the 350 patients did indeed mostly have coronavirus and can believe the numbers that this wasn’t such a bad outcome. Still, skepticism remained because of these lingering questions.

This morning, another such pronouncement was made. Dr. Anthony Cardillo of Los Angeles said he has seen very promising results when prescribing HC in combination with zinc for the most severely-ill COVID-19 patients. He did not report the dosages of either the hydroxychloroquine or the zinc.

Zinc as an anti-viral

Zinc is known to inhibit viral replication by a few mechanisms. The first is that zinc shuts down the very enzyme that the RNA virus needs to replicate itself inside the cell. It inhibits RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP).

Montenegro Is Burning

The Montenegrin government demonstrates a painful commitment to its campaign against the Serbian Orthodox Church, which already led to wide-scale protests in the country.

On July 19, Prime Minister Dusko Markovic announced that the government’s work group is ready to continue negotiations on the controversial Freedom of Religion Law, which infringes on rights of the Serbian Orthodox Church and its Metropolitanate of Montenegro.

The Serbian Orthodox Church is traditionally the main and only canonic Orthodox church in Montenegro and has a wide support of the local population. Despite this, the Markovic government has been fiercely working to change this by promoting a project of the ‘independent’ Montenegrin Orthodox Church. To do so, the government seeks to adopt a new law allowing to seize church properties of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Montenegro and setting conditions for psuhing the canonic church out of the country. The government apparently believes that the existence of the canonic church as an important part of the traditionally conservative Serbian society undermines its attempts to impose Western-promoted ‘neo-liberal values’ in Montenegro. While the jointing in NATO in 2017 faced a controversy in the country and the attempts to join the European Union are seem mainly as relatively positive by the population, the blatant propaganda of the modern variant of ‘democratic values’ (i.e. joining the minorities-ruled, neo-liberal camp) faces a mostly negative reaction.

Zinc from the extracellular milieu and from intracellular compartments enters the cytoplasm through 14 specialized trans-membrane proteins of the ZIP/SLC39 family. These transport proteins are very good at keeping zinc out unless induced to open.

Substances that open ion channels or that shuttle ions across membranes independent of channels are called ionophores. Zinc ionophores therefore are important in getting zinc into cells to block replication.

A study done in 2014, long before coronavirus was around, found that chloroquine behaved as an ionophore to open zinc channels and could therefore allow zinc into cells in sufficient quantity to stop viral replication.

In addition to inhibiting RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, zinc also is a potent inhibitor of the signalling cascade of interferons-lamba3, which are a family of pro-inflammatory cytokines. You may recall hearing about the dreaded ‘cytokine storm’ that suddenly alters a relatively mild case of COVID-19 tending toward recovery to sudden cyanosis with Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Zinc may play a role in preventing that storm.

Now that it seems plausible that zinc transport into cells is a crucial part of control of the coronavirus, it might make sense that any health condition that interferes with zinc transport would worsen COVID-19 disease and anything that promotes zinc transport would improve outcome.

It turns out that diabetes and cardiovascular disease reduce zinc transport while estrogen is an inducer of the ZIP6 zinc transporter. Conversely, dysfunctions of zinc transporters are promoting factors in cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer.

Yet Another Explosion Hits Power Plant In Iran. MSM Points At Israel

Yet another strange and unexplained explosion has rocked central Iran on Sunday, state-owned Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported on Sunday. The explosion occurred at a power station in the city of Islamabad, which is in the central province of Isfahan.

Iranian officials blamed faulty equipment, and no casualties were reported.

A “worn out transformer… at Isfahan’s Islamabad thermal power plant exploded at around 5:00 am today,” the managing director of Isfahan’s electricity company Said Mohseni told IRNA.

The facility returned to normal working conditions after about two hours and Isfahan’s power supply was uninterrupted, he added.

The blaze was the result of an explosion of 230 KV power transformer at a substation of the power plant, said the provincial electric company, blaming “wear and tear on the transformer.”

The substation returned to normal operations within two hours and the damaged equipment was being repaired and replaced, plant officials said.

The power plant was constructed about 50 years ago, and provides electricity to the main city of Isfahan, with capacity to generate around 500 MW of electricity.

Separately on Sunday, a cellophane factory in northwest Iran erupted in fire. Video and images showed a huge cloud of smoke billowing from the site through the day as fire fighters struggled to put it out.

Iran’s civil defence organization chief, Ghulam Reza Jalali, was cited in state media as saying Iran is not ruling out sabotage on the power plant either by internal opposition groups or externally supported entities.

Last week, an explosion occurred at a chemical plant in the Razavi Khorasan Province in eastern Iran on 13 July. The blast allegedly occurred at a gas condensate plant in the Kavian Fariman industrial zone in the Razavi Khorasan Province in eastern Iran. Syrian Air Defense Systems Intercept 'Hostile Targets' in Damascus - State Media

Explosions were reported the skies over Damascus Monday night as Syrian air defenses engaged incoming projectiles.

Videos posted on social media show anti-air missiles taking flight in al-Kiswah, a city southwest of the Syrian capital, late Monday night.

While no definitive claim about the origin of the missile attacks has yet been made, analysts noted on Twitter that air activity is very heavy over northern Israel. The Israeli Air Force has launched airstrikes at many times in the past into Syrian territory, often targeting Iranian or alleged Iranian installations.

Sky News reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based organization, had claimed it was an Israeli attack.

Are there other ionophores better than chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine?

Ionophore activity is in no way unique to chloroquine and HC. There are many other substances that either open zinc transporter channels or shuttle zinc into a cell across a cell membrane. hiokitiol, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, pyrithione all transport zinc and have been shown in vitro to inhibit viral replication. Hinokitiol is a natural substance isolated from Taiwamese ninoki tree and used as a topical antibacterial in Japan.

Pyrithione might be considered the gold-standard zinc ionophore in that it is used in studies looking at ability to get zinc into cells to inhibit replication. It is also a natural compound found in Persian shallot which is an Asian species of onion growing in central and southwestern Asia. It is for topical use only and often in medicated dandruff shampoos. So, even though hinokitiol and pyrithione are natural, it doesn’t look like they would be practical replacements for HC.

Perhaps reasonable choices as substitutes for chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are quercetin and Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and even tonic water which contains small amounts of quinine (added to tonic water to make the gin and tonic a little bitter and more palatable).

Quercetin is a plant flavonol found in many fruits, vegetables, leaves, seeds, and grains; red onions and kale. It is found in highest concentration in capers, sorrel and radish leaves. Quercetin is a very popular supplement used as an anti-mast cell and antihistamine therapy. EGCG is a water-soluble flavonoid present in green tea. Quinine is the naturally occurring parent compound from which chloroquine and HC are synthesized. It is isolated from the bark of the cinchona (qui-qui) tree. Quinine was used liberally during the flu pandemic of 1918. Whether it helped or not, no one know because no one stopped to do clinical trials.

Quercetin and EGCG are among the most consumed and most studied polyphenols in the human diet .Flavonoids are considered bioactive micronutrients whose regular consumption, either as food components, or as dietary supplements and nutraceuticals, entails benefits for human health, including prevention and amelioration of cancers, diabetes, and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

Many of the health benefits of flavonoids have historically been ascribed to their antioxidant activity, which they exert directly by scavenging reactive oxygen species and indirectly by inhibiting transcription factors and pro-oxidant enzymes. However, it is currently believed that the levels of polyphenols achieved through ingestion are not enough to justify their wide array of biological actions.

Diverse polyphenols have been shown able to form complexes with the redox-inactive transition metal zinc. Several studies have shown that flavonoids affect zinc metabolism including, for the purposes of this story, acting as ionophores that shuttles zinc into cells effectively.

A study done in 2014 in Barcelona looked at the ability of quercetin and EGCG to allow zinc into cells. This was compared against the drug clioquinol, a drug that has both anti-protozoal and anti-viral properties but has too much neurotoxicity to be considered an option for COVID-19. But it provides a positive control for the study. Unfortunately, the study did not include quinine or compare it against chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine.

To date, Japan and Singapore are among the countries with the lowest new case rates and lowest deaths per capita in the world. Global Real Estate Investment Plunged By 33% In First Half Of The Year

Cross-border investments in global real estate plunged by 33% in the first half of the year compared to the first half of 2019, according to a report released Monday by Savills, the London-based global real estate services provider.

The largest declines were seen in the Asia Pacific region, down 45%, and the Americas, down 36%.

By sector, investments in hotels suffered the steepest drop, down 59% on a global basis. Investments in retail properties and office spaces plunged 41% and 40%, respectively.

Industrial properties showed the most resilience, with investments slipping by only 4%.

Interestingly, investments in residential properties in Asia-Pacific actually surged by 105% – partly boosted by the purchase of a Japanese apartment portfolio by Blackstone Group for about $3 billion in February 2020.

“Overall the global 33% fall in real estate investment activity so far this year is less than the decrease at the start of the global financial crisis in the first half of 2008, when real estate investment volumes across the world fell by 49% and continued falling until mid-2009,” said Sophie Chick, director of Savills World Research team. “Unsurprisingly, those asset classes that have been most [affected] by social distancing measures have been hit hardest, while industrial and residential, which is a long-term income play, have been impacted least.”

By region, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, or EMEA, saw only a 19% decline in investments.

“The huge increase in entity-level deals in EMEA has helped insulate that market from the biggest falls, as some buyers have used this period for opportunistic M&A or equity deals,” Chick explained.

Simon Hope, Savills’ head of global capital markets, added: “Volumes are expected to remain well below pre-pandemic levels for the rest of 2020 as investors wait for market clarity. However, certain sectors are expected to outperform as investors focus on secure assets, namely logistics, residential and life sciences.

Hope also noted that looking ahead, “there seems to be general consensus across G8 governments around the world to build their way out of this downturn, turning on a tap of capital for infrastructure projects. This generally bodes well for the real estate industry as it potentially creates more assets to invest in as well as reducing unemployment rates.”

The International Monetary Fund expects the global economy to shrink by 4.9% this year.

But some countries, including the U.K., plan to increase spending on infrastructure projects to push their economies out of recession.

For instance, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said his government plans to “build, build, build” to boost growth.
