109 Migrants Apprehended in Human Smuggling Stash House, Tractor-Trailer Incidents

Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended nearly 110 migrants in a 24-hour period in two separate human smuggling interactions. One involved a human smuggling stash house in Laredo, Texas. The second involved a tractor-trailer interdiction at an interior immigration checkpoint.

Laredo North Station Border Patrol agents assigned to the Interstate 35 interior immigration checkpoint observed a tractor-trailer approaching for inspection during the early afternoon of July 21. The agents referred the driver to a secondary inspection station after a K-9 alerted to the possible presence of drug or human cargo in the trailer. A search of the trailer led to the discovery of 58 smuggled migrants, according to information obtained from Laredo Sector Border Patrol officials.

The agents identified the 58 migrants as having come to the U.S. from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Agents arrested the U.S. citizen driver and the 58 migrants on human smuggling and immigration violations.

33 Migrants Found in Trucks in Failed Human Smuggling Attempts

Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol agents apprehended 33 migrants they found in cargo areas of commercial trucks in two separate incidents. The agents found 13 migrants in the cargo area of one truck and 20 more in a second. Additionally, agents rescued a Guatemalan woman in Brooks County, Texas, who had been abandoned by human smugglers.

Agents assigned to the Javier Vega, Jr. Immigration Checkpoint on U.S. Highway 77 on July 20 observed a box truck approaching for inspection. During an initial inspection and interview, a K-9 alerted to the possible presence of drug or human cargo in the back of the truck, according to information received from Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol officials.

The agent referred the driver to a secondary inspection area. A team of agents unlocked the rear cargo area and discovered 20 migrants locked inside, officials reported.

A few minutes later, another box truck approached the same checkpoint. A K-9 alerted to the cargo area of the truck causing agents to refer the driver to a secondary inspection station. This time, agents found 13 migrants locked inside.

Under Title 42 coronavirus protection protocols put in place by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it is likely all of the migrants were expelled to Mexico within hours of their apprehension. Officials did not disclose the nationality or other demographic information about the migrants or the disposition of the two drivers.

Gov't Says Man Has Tested Positive for COVID, He Says He Has Never Been Tested

If you’re going to count someone among those who’ve tested positive for COVID-19, it helps if he’s been tested in the first place.

This goes without saying, one would think. However, the case of Brock Ballou shows how bureaucratic sloppiness has infected our COVID-19 response.

According to WSMV-TV in Nashville, Ballou — a Mt. Juliet, Tennessee resident — knew he was potentially at risk for infection by the coronavirus. One of his co-workers had it and he was expecting a call from a contact tracer.

What he wasn’t expecting is that the contact tracers would be telling him he was listed as having COVID-19 — without being tested.

“She specifically said – I’m looking at it right here – you tested positive – this is a follow-up call to see how your symptoms are,” Ballou told WSMV.

All right, so that’s one call, right? Well, it wasn’t just that.

There were two more days of calls, Ballou said, both with similar messages.

“[The contact tracer] said, ‘I’m still seeing that you’re positive. Courtesy call – checking your symptoms,’” Ballou said.

Was this a case of mishearing the person on the other end of the line?

“I’m 100 percent sure that’s what she said,” Ballou said.

“She was looking right at it; she told me I’m in the system – looking right at it that you’re showing positive.”

Ballou’s problem is probably the same as yours, he wonders how he can trust the numbers coming out of the state if he’s being counted positive without actually taking a test. (Stories about inflated numbers of deaths being attributed to COVID-19 are becoming all too common.)

“I said, ‘I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s wrong,'” Ballou said.

“I’m just another number when I’m not.”

According to WSMV, Ballou provided three phone numbers to the station where he said the calls came from. All three trace back to workers with the Tennessee Department of Health, WSMV reported.

Ballou told the station he was told by the state that the calls were made to him by a third-party contractor.

The health department told WSMV it’s investigating the case.

“I can also tell you there is no concern with our count of cases in regard to our reporting of those who test positive,” a spokeswoman said in a statement, according to WSMV. “Those entries are based on lab results, not on information provided from the monitoring team.”

Ballou’s case might be unusual, but it’s not alone.

As WWSB-TV in Sarasota, Florida, reported Friday, Florida resident Mindy Clark said she also had received a phone call informing her she’d tested positive for the coronavirus when she had never been tested at all.

Clark said she had driven to a drive-thru testing site, but left the line before she got swabbed because she realized it was supposed to only be for those who were showing potential sympoms.

In an interview with WWSB, Jay Wolfson, a professor of health and medicine at the University of South Florida, said that might have been caused by a quirk in the testing. Motorists in line at some drive-thru testing sites are registered along with their vehicle’s place in line, he said. If one vehicle leaves before a test is administered, it could throw off results that follow.

“This is part of the testing mechanism problem. People are sitting in their cars, sometimes for hours, or standing in line, six feet apart sometimes for hours. You’re registered though, you’re number 15 in line, and you are Jay Wolfson,” he said. “If Jay Wolfson says he can’t wait any longer and he leaves, it will get number 15 and now get Rebecca Fernandez, who was standing behind him, and she tests positive, and then everyone from then on gets the wrong results. There has to be a better way to do this.”

That’s a different issue from Ballou’s, but clearly, mistakes are being made.

Cases like Brock Ballou’s, whether or not they end up in the official COVID-19 tallies, might not make that much of a difference in terms of the numbers — at least at the moment. However, it’s indicative of how our systems for reporting cases of the novel coronavirus simply haven’t evolved quickly enough to keep pace with the problem that we face.

The extrapolation that can be made in Ballou’s case, if his situation wasn’t a one-off mistake, is that contact tracers made the sloppy, lazy assumption there was a cluster of people with the novel coronavirus because those individuals came into contact with a single person.

You can imagine the problems this would create if these are the shortcuts we’re going to take. At the moment, the Tennessee Department of Health says it’s investigating — and hopefully, it will be public about the results. However, the fact that the story exists at all isn’t a good sign for our ability to accurately track this disease.

Chinese Consulate In Houston Was ‘Massive Spy Center,’ FBI Probes Chinese Army Suspects In 25+ Cities

Top U.S. officials said in the hours following the revelation that the United States ordered the Chinese General Consulate in Houston to close that the move was carried out because the facility was a “massive spy center” that was stealing information from Americans and running influence operations in the U.S.

Jeffrey Epstein's former defense attorney Alan Dershowitz on Wednesday smeared Epstein victim Maria Farmer as "anti-Semitic" while she's in the middle of undergoing treatment for brain cancer and struggling to survive, let alone defend herself.

As the New York Times reported last year, Maria Farmer and her younger sister Annie were the first people to report Epstein to the FBI and NYPD all the way back in 1996.

Farmer claimed to have evidence that the Israeli Mossad hired Jeffrey Epstein to video tape prominent American political leaders committing acts of pedophilia so that Israel could blackmail them into doing their bidding," Dershowitz said, "and that the entire conspiracy was under the protection and direction of 'The Rothschild's.'"

Dershowitz also constructed this quote of hers where he compiled multiple of her statements into one:

Swedish Court Convicts Somali Migrant for Raping Nine-Year-Old Girl

A Swedish court has convicted and sentenced a Somalian migrant to 11 years in prison after he raped a nine-year-old girl at knifepoint earlier this year, his second child rape conviction in three years.

Somalian migrant Ahmed M., who became a Swedish citizen in 2014, attacked the nine-year-old on April 15th in the municipality of Norrköping when she was on her way home from school.

Ahmed M. dragged the child into a nearby bush, beat her and threatened the girl with a knife. He then dragged her into a forested area where he raped her. The 39-year-old is even said to have threatened to kill the girl and her family if she told police, Nyheter Idag reports.

“Inside the forest, he took off her clothes and smeared clay all over her… He also forced her to put water and clay in her mouth and wanted her to swallow,” the court heard.

The 39-year-old attacked her while he was on probation for another conviction for raping a 12-year-old in 2017. He lured the girl into a basement and threatened to kill her with a knife before raping her. In both cases, the Somalian migrant wore plastic gloves.

While he was sentenced to 21 months in prison for the 2017 rape case, Ahmed M. was only in jail for just over a year before he was released. The newspaper reports that because he became a Swedish citizen six years ago, he could not be deported after committing his first rape of a child.

The cases are just the latest to involve migrants or asylum seekers sexually assaulting children in Sweden.

185 Bodies Found in Cartel-Dug Mass Graves in One Mexican State

The number of bodies found in mass graves by Mexican authorities rose to 185 as the search continues. Authorities searched in one of three mass graves used by a ruthless drug cartel to dispose of their victims.

Mexico’s Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion continues to use extreme violence and social media videos to spread fear throughout the nation and continue to openly challenge the Mexican government’s authority.

The mass grave search efforts continue in the city of Tlajomulco, Jalisco, in an area known as El Mirador 1 and 2. In the first Mirador, authorities found 50 bodies, Breitbart Texas reported at the time. In the second gravesite, just a few yards away, authorities found 104 bodies as the search continues the search for more.

The case began in November 2019 when as Breitbart Texas reported, authorities in the city of Tlaquepaque arrested 15 gunmen from Mexico’s Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion. Based on the information from the jailed gunmen, authorities learned of the location of multiple cartel killing fields and warehouses where they would take their victims, dismember them, and bury them inside black trash bags. In the first search tied to that investigation in November, authorities found 31 bodies buried in a warehouse in the El Zapote neighborhood.

The second location, El Mirador 1, yielded 50 bodies as authorities finished their search in December. Since then, authorities continued their search in El Mirador 2 and, according to El Universal, is now about 90 percent complete. Shutdowns and sanitary emergencies tied to the novel coronavirus pandemic temporarily halted the search efforts in El Mirador 2.

CJNG, the criminal organization behind these mass graves and several others throughout Jalisco, has become one of Mexico’s most feared criminal organizations as they continue to expand in a rapid fashion. Most recently, CJNG made headlines for publishing a video that showed more than 80 gunmen and several armored trucks in an apparent show of force as they praised their leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera and appeared to openly challenge Mexico’s government, Breitbart Texas reported.

UK: One Third of Babies Born to Foreign Mothers, as Fertility Rate Falls to Lowest Level Since Before World War II

The fertility rate for women under the age of 30 in England has fallen to the lowest level since 1938, with nearly one-third of babies being born to foreign mothers, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS report, which was released on Wednesday, found that fertility rates declined for all age groups in England and Wales, with the exception of women over the age of 40, who saw the rate of births increase to 16.5 per 1,000 women.

The total fertility rate (TFR) for England and Wales decreased from 1.7 children per woman in 2018 to 1.65 children per woman in 2019, which is lower than all recorded years except 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Fertility rates are determined by calculating the average number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime. A fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman is required to maintain a country’s population.

The report also found that over a quarter of all live births (28.7 per cent) were to women born outside the United Kingdom, the highest percentage since 1969. The country with the highest number of women giving birth in the UK was Poland with 16,737 births, barely edging out Pakistani women, who recorded 16,320 births last year. (Table 1)

Pakistan also represented the highest number of fathers born outside the country, with 17,519 Pakistani men siring children in the UK last year. (Table 2A)

As a whole, there was a 2.5 per cent drop in live births in England and Wales in 2019 from the previous year, and a 12.2 per cent decrease since 2012 — the most recent peak in births in the UK.

Typical junctions, such as those based on barium titanate or hafnium dioxide, are limited by their small barrier height modulation of around 0.1 eV. Here, we report a ferroelectric tunnel junction that uses layered copper indium thiophosphate (CuInP2S6) as the ferroelectric barrier, and graphene and chromium as asymmetric contacts. The ferroelectric field effect in CuInP2S6 can induce a barrier height modulation of 1 eV in the junction, which results in a TER of above 107. This modulation, which is shown using Kelvin probe force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, is due to the low density of states and small quantum capacitance near the Dirac point of the semi-metallic graphene.

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden would like to see American children learn more about Islam in class, he said Monday.

“Our number one goal is to remove Donald Trump from office and to replace him with someone who can begin to heal our nation,” the letter said. “A Biden administration will move the nation forward on many of the issues we care about.”

Space Exploration Technologies, Elon Musk's re-usable rocket and satellite internet venture, is in talks to raise $500 million to $1 billion in series N funding at a valuation of $44 billion, according to documents reviewed by CNBC and people familiar with the company's fundraising activity.

The growth funding would help SpaceX begin commercial operations of its Starlink satellite broadband service, and to conduct sub-orbital and orbital test flights of its Starship and SuperHeavy booster launch vehicle. Bloomberg previously reported on the fundraising plans.

SpaceX is telling investors its Starlink business is going after a $1 trillion total addressable market — including bringing satellite broadband to any location, including all rural areas on Earth, and to ships at sea and aircraft in flight. The company began to deploy constellations of satellites for Starlink in November 2019, and has launched more than 450 satellites since then. They expect to generate revenue from the service starting this year.

Ultimately, SpaceX aims to make interplanetary transportation from the Earth to the Moon and Mars a reality with its re-usable rockets. The company also has ambitions to use Starship for rapid long-distance air travel on Earth, rendering long haul flights in under an hour. Among others, SpaceX was previously backed by investors in Elon Musk's car company, Tesla. Shared investors have included Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, Baillie Gifford and Valor Equity Partners. SpaceX has a myriad of other investors, including Fidelity, Gigafund and Google.

As the Israeli government prepares to annex parts of the West Bank, Jewish establishment organizations are strategizing how best to shield Israel from political consequences.

In the same week that Jason Isaacson, the American Jewish Committee’s chief policy and political affairs officer, published an op-ed titled “We’ll defend annexation if needed—but here’s the thing,” the ADL appears to be formulating its own response.

A leaked ADL strategy memo obtained by Jewish Currents sheds light on how the nominal civil rights organization is preparing to address annexation’s critics.

The “stakeholders analysis memo,” which was issued by the ADL’s Government Relations, Advocacy, and Community Engagement department and marked as a draft, warns that the group will need to find a way to defend Israel from criticism without alienating other civil rights organizations, elected officials of color, and Black Lives Matter activists and supporters.

The memo suggests that the group hopes to avoid appearing openly hostile to public criticism of annexation while it works to block legislation that harshly censures Israel or leads to material consequences, such as conditioning United States military support. The ADL did not respond to requests for comment on the memo by press time.

The memo lists “eight top political and community engagement implications” annexation could have, among them: “complicate ADL’s relationship with the Tri-Caucus (the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus) and the Progressive caucus”; “pit ADL on the wrong side of the black lives matter movement”; “be used to label Israel as an occupier, racist and apartheid state”; and “challenge relationships between ADL and many civil rights organizations and coalitions.”

Of particular concern to the ADL, according to the memo, is that the group will have to find a way to credibly defend Israel from accusations that it has formalized a system of discrimination and subjugation on the basis of ethnonational identity. “

The reference to apartheid or ‘separate but equal’ systems to describe Israel will be a major political flashpoint,” the memo states. “As an organization, how ADL responds to these attacks will be critical.”

The memo proposes as “next steps” that the ADL’s communications team and executive office “game out how to respond to accusations of Israel being racist and an apartheid system and when to respond in public and when to respond in private.”

The memo suggests that the ADL hopes to avoid the kinds of public controversies that have flared over the last year and a half, such as those involving Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib.

In 2016, the Panama Papers were on the cover of every newspaper, and it felt like something big was about to happen. Just as quickly as the leak was exposed, however, it went away. So what happened?

What Were The Panama Papers?

We've all heard of offshore tax shelters, but the Panama Papers provided a detailed outline of the inner workings of one of the biggest tax shelters in the world, Mossack Fonseca. They contained nearly 40 years of information about the Panama-based law firm, including a 2015 audit showing that M.F. only knew the real identities of 204 of 14,086 companies they had assisted to incorporate in Seychelles, a collection of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean.

The amount of information in the documents is staggering, but the biggest takeaway is that major foreign political players, sports stars, and parents of the rich and famous all had shell accounts through Mossack Fonseca. The documents that were leaked to Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung not only showed that a lot of people were up to something fishy (at the very least) but also that Mossack Fonseca was aware of the possibility that people and corporations were participating in criminal activities with the help of their offshore shelters.

Naming Names

The documents don't just include the names of wealthy business people that you've never heard of—they incriminate some of the biggest world leaders and their families. The Papers name 12 current or former world leaders, the most notable figure being Vladimir Putin. The Russian president left a $2 billion paper trail snaking through an offshore state bank, his cellist best friend, and the ski resort where his daughter was married in 2013.

President Mauricio Macri of Argentina, Iceland Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson, and British Prime Minister David Cameron are also named in the Papers. Also included is a trove of FIFA players—including Lionel Messi, captain of the Spanish club Barcelona and the Argentine national team—alongside members of the governing body of European soccer, the UEFA.

BOSTON (Reuters) – The son of former Nissan Motor Co chairman Carlos Ghosn made about $500,000 in cryptocurrency payments to one of the two Massachusetts men who helped him escape from Japan, U.S. prosecutors said in a court filing.

Federal prosecutors in filing late on Wednesday said the payments went to Peter Taylor after he and his father, U.S. Army Special Forces veteran Michael Taylor, helped Ghosn flee in a box and private jet to avoid facing financial charges.

The cryptocurrency, or digital currency, payments from Ghosn's son, Anthony Ghosn, were on top of $862,500 Ghosn himself had wired to a company Peter Taylor managed in October, two months before his Dec. 29, 2019 escape, prosecutors said. Prosecutors detailed the payments in a filing arguing against the Taylors' latest bid to be released on bail. They have been in jail since their arrests in May at the request of Japan, which is seeking their extradition.

U.S. prosecutors cited the money in arguing that both the elder Taylor, a private security specialist, and his son pose a severe flight risk, saying they "now have access to Ghosn's vast resources with which to flee." Prosecutors cited a recent TV interview Ghosn gave in which he said he was helping everyone who stood with him. The Taylors' lawyers did not respond to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for Ghosn declined to comment.

Ghosn fled to Lebanon, his childhood home, after being charged with engaging in financial wrongdoing, including by understating his compensation in Nissan's financial statements. He denies wrongdoing. The Taylors argue the charges against them are fatally flawed as the Japanese penal code does not make it a criminal offense to help someone "bail jump" unless that person is in custody.

Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan ruled on Thursday to unseal more than 80 documents that Ghislaine Maxwell had wanted to keep under wraps

Preska said the documents - which will run to hundreds of pages - should be made public within a week

They include flight logs from Epstein's jets, a deposition in 2016 in which Maxwell's lawyers said she was asked 'intrusive' questions about her sex life

The documents also include police reports from Palm Beach, Florida, where Epstein had a home

It will include communications between Maxwell and Epstein from January 2015 when Virginia Roberts Giuffre made allegations about them in court papers

In the papers Giuffre claimed she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew three times when she was just 17 at Epstein’s command

The documents were part of a defamation lawsuit brought by Giuffre against Maxwell, which was confidentially settled in 2017

The case is separate from the criminal proceedings against Maxwell, who is accused of procuring girls as young as 14 for Epstein to abuse

A judge today has ordered the unsealing of a vast tranche of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, which could shed light on his friendship with powerful men accused of having sex with his victims.

Judge Loretta Preska said that 80 documents - which will run to hundreds of pages - should be made public within a week.

The documents will include depositions from Ghislaine Maxwell, which could explain her alleged role in Epstein’s sex trafficking operation.

The papers include flight logs from Epstein's private jets, a deposition testimony in 2016 in which Maxwell's lawyers said she was asked 'intrusive' questions about her sex life and police reports from Palm Beach, Florida, where Epstein had a home.

They will also include communications between Maxwell and Epstein from January 2015 when Virginia Roberts made explosive allegations about them in court papers.

In the papers Roberts claimed she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew three times when she was just 17 at Epstein’s command.

The case is separate from the criminal proceedings against Maxwell, 58, who is accused by federal prosecutors of procuring girls as young as 14 for Epstein to abuse. She has pleaded not guilty and is due to stand trial next year.
