Teens accused of stealing MacBook at gunpoint in Southeast Portland in 2011

 

Portland police arrested a pair of teenagers today after they allegedly stole a MacBook computer at gunpoint on the city's southeast side.

 

Officers were summoned to the 11200 block of Southeast Insley Street at about 4 p.m., when the victim of the robbery reported that he had been robbed of the laptop after placing an advertisement on Craigslist.

 

The teens answered the ad at the victim's residence, asking him to step into their four-door Subaru so they could have a look at the computer. Once their victim was in the car, the two men pointed handguns at their victim and told him to get out or they would shoot him, reported police Sgt. Pete Simpson.

 

Officers found the Subaru near Interstate 205 and Powell Boulevard, where they were stopped and arrested. Police recovered two handguns, ammunition and the stolen laptop.

 

Anthony Paul Harrington, a 19-year-old Southwest Portland resident, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on one count of first-degree robbery. The second suspect, 16, was booked into the county's juvenile detention hall, also for first-degree robbery.

"The Postal Service last month abruptly ordered its police officers to stop investigating mail theft that occurs away from post office property, the Postal Police Officers Association alleged Monday, suing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to block a change they say could erode the safety of mail carriers and delivery.

Per the lawsuit, a senior Postal Service Deputy Chief Inspector Craig Goldberg first raised the notion that postal police officers may not be legally permitted to exercise law enforcement authority away from USPS real estate in February. But the union said the agency "routinely" continued to send out postal police to investigate matters off of USPS property.

But that changed last month when Deputy Chief Inspector David Bowers issued an Aug. 25 "National Communication to all Inspection Service Divisions."

 

"According to Bowers, Postal Police Officers no longer had any law-enforcement authority, whatsoever, except when they are physically stationed on real estate owned or leased by the Postal Service," the union described. The English department at the University of Chicago announced that it will be accepting only graduate student applicants who are interested in pursuing Black Studies in the upcoming admissions cycle.

 

In a faculty statement posted on the department's website in July, the English department expressed remorse about the university's role in perpetuating inequality and committed to emphasizing and amplifying black voices more strongly. From a highlighted portion of the statement:

 

The English department at the University of Chicago believes that Black Lives Matter, and that the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Rayshard Brooks matter, as do thousands of others named and unnamed who have been subject to police violence. Stickman wrote in his ruling that the Wolf administration’s pandemic policies have been overreaching, arbitrary and violated citizens’ constitutional rights. The Trump administration moved to block substantially more imports from the Xinjiang region of China, where approximately 1 million Uighur Muslims are forced to manufacture goods in “concentration camps,” according to homeland security officials. Ken Cuccinelli, who performs the duties of Department of Homeland Security deputy secretary, told reporters in a press call Monday afternoon that Customs and Border Protection officers who screen imports at ports of entry will block items made at any of five locations in China. The Chinese government claims the sites are vocational skills and training centers or workplace facilities.

 

“This is not a vocational center. It is a concentration camp — a place where religious and ethnic minorities are subject to abuse and forced to work in heinous conditions with no recourse and no freedom,” said Cuccinelli. “This is modern-day slavery. President Trump has been very clear: This administration will not tolerate the egregious human rights violations that are taking place in China.” “Illicit, inhumane, and exploitative practices of modern-day slavery will not be tolerated in the U.S. supply chain,” said acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan. “For those people and entities who traffic in these despicable practices, know that every CBP officer who reviews cargo information is looking to keep these products out of the United States economy.”

 

To date, in fiscal 2020, which began last October, the U.S. has imposed a dozen bans on imported goods, including eight against Chinese entities. Federal law prohibits the importation of merchandise mined, manufactured, or produced, in part or fully, by convict labor, forced child labor, and indentured labor. The United Nations estimates 1 million Uighur Muslims have been detained in labor camps there. China is the world's largest exporter of cotton, most of which comes from Xinjiang.

Citigroup, Closely Tied to the Clintons, Had a Senior V.P. Outed as a QAnon Promoter, a Conspiracy Group that Reviles the Clintons

 

this is old news but a nice, brief wrap-up of the back-story with Shitigroup history on how we got here

 

This is the perfect litmus test of just how little mainstream media knows about the dangerous Wall Street banks. Last Thursday, the fact-checking website, Logically, outed Jason Gelinas, who was living a secret-life as a promoter of the conspiracy group, QAnon, while also holding down a Senior V.P. technology position at Citigroup, a giant Wall Street bank that played a key role in the financial and economic collapse of 2008. But instead of headlining the story as “Citigroup V.P Outed as QAnon Promoter,” dozens of headlines described Gelinas as “NJ Man.” (Check out the “NJ Man” headlines here.) As far as we’re aware, there is no context in which the state of New Jersey would be relevant to this story, but there certainly is relevance when it comes to Citigroup.

 

Citigroup has remained strangely silent about the matter, declining to respond to a request from a Bloomberg News reporter as well as an email inquiry sent by Wall Street On Parade. It’s an embarrassment to Citigroup for sure. A leaked FBI memo that specifically names QAnon, indicated that such groups may pose a domestic terrorism threat. That’s not exactly someone you want in a senior role in technology security at one of the largest banks in the country.

 

QAnon’s conspiracy theories stem from an anonymous poster known as “Q,” whom QAnon followers believe is a person inside the Trump administration helping the President uncover and expose an evil cartel that includes child sex traffickers. In the eyes of QAnon commenters, Trump has taken on super action figure status while Hillary and Bill Clinton have been designated permanent roles in the evil cartel. Deconstructing the posts on the various QAnon websites, it’s very hard not to draw the conclusion that Q is someone in the Trump campaign, or a zealous Trump supporter, simply trying to throw red meat to Trump’s base and keep them engaged.

 

We located a French language website, DisSept.com, which has a direct link to the QAnon website set up by Gelinas, QMap.pub, (now taken down but visible at the Wayback Machine) and echoes the same themes: Trump is out to save the U.S. while the Clintons are pure evil. A website analytics firm, SimilarWeb.com, shows that DisSept.com was the main referral site to QMap, although the bulk of QMap’s 10 million visitors a month in May, June and July were coming directly to the site, not through a referral site.

 

There is heavy irony in Citigroup now being outed as the employer of Gelinas, whose LinkedIn resume (also now removed) indicated he had worked for the bank for the past 17 years. Citigroup has a heavy history with the Clintons. President Bill Clinton’s Treasury Secretary was Robert Rubin. After Rubin helped to engineer the 1999 repeal of the 1933 banking legislation known as the Glass-Steagall Act, allowing federally-insured banks to merge with Wall Street trading casinos, Rubin became a member of the Citigroup Board of Directors and reaped $120 million in compensation over the next decade. Citigroup desperately needed the repeal of this legislation because it had already illegally merged Citicorp with Salomon Brothers the prior year. Sandy Weill, the Co-CEO at Citigroup in 1999, who lobbied for the repeal of Glass-Steagall, was given a commemorative pen from the Clinton signing ceremony that repealed the legislation. Just nine years after the repeal, Wall Street banks like Citigroup blew up Wall Street, taking down the U.S. economy in the process. According to PolitiFact, Citigroup was the bank that provided the Clintons with a $1.995 million mortgage to buy their Washington, D.C. residence in 2000, as President Bill Clinton’s second term in the White House was ending.

 

Citigroup also paid Bill Clinton hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees after he left the White House according to financial disclosure forms. The bank also committed at least $5.5 million to the Clinton Global Initiative — a nonprofit created by Bill Clinton in 2005, after leaving the White House. The nonprofit previously brought global leaders together annually to make action commitments.

 

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Citigroup was the number one contributor to Hillary Clinton’s reelection run for the Senate in 2006. Goldman Sachs was number two. The banks are not allowed to donate directly to the candidate. The money comes from bank employees, their spouses, and the banks’ political action committees.

David Legates, a professor of climatology at the University of Delaware who has spent years rejecting the scientific consensus that human activity is causing climate change, confirmed with NPR this weekend that he was hired as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's deputy assistant secretary of commerce for observation and prediction.

 

NPR says that this suggests Legates will directly report to Neil Jacobs, the acting head of the agency. Legates would not respond to questions about his new role or specific responsibilities.

 

NOAA oversees climate research and forecasting. In 2007, Legates co-authored a paper that questioned findings about the role of climate change in destroying polar bear habitats; this research was partially funded by grants from ExxonMobil, the American Petroleum Institute lobbying group, and Koch Industries, InsideClimate News reports. He was also in a video promoting the discredited theory that the sun caused global warming.

 

NPR notes that Legates is affiliated with the Heartland Institute think tank, which is partly funded by the fossil fuel industry and tries to persuade the public that climate change isn't real and evidence provided by the NOAA and other scientific agencies isn't trustworthy. While it's important to have researchers raise questions, their claims must have science to back them up, and Jane Lubchenco, the head of NOAA under former President Barack Obama, told NPR Legates is "not just in left field — he's not even near the ballpark."

The Biden campaign has been quietly building a massive "election protection program," including former Attorney General Eric Holder and hundreds of other lawyers in preparation for a legal battle in the event of a contested election.

 

The former vice president’s campaign told Fox News Monday that over the past several months they have created the largest election protection program in presidential campaign history, involving integrated legal, communications and political strategies for what they anticipate to be an unprecedented election.

 

The strategies, according to the campaign, are being directed to support election jurisdictions in preparing for and administering the vote under what they call “extraordinary conditions” this cycle, voter education to raise awareness of options for in-person and mail-in voting, aggressive responses to vote suppression activities, and robust programs for identifying and countering foreign interference and misinformation from foreign or domestic sources.

 

The campaign said Bob Bauer has signed on full-time as a senior campaign adviser. He is on leave from the faculty of NYU Law School, and will work on the voter protection program with the campaign’s general counsel, Dana Remus. Bauer served as general counsel to the Obama-Biden campaigns in 2008 and 2012, and co-chair of former President Obama's Presidential Commission on Election Administration.

US Blocks Goods Made in China's Xinjiang to Combat Forced Labor

 

The United States has moved to block the import of goods made in China’s Xinjiang to combat alleged forced labor practices, the Department of Homeland Security said on Monday.

 

"US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued five Withhold Release Orders today on products from the People’s Republic of China", the department said in a statement. "The products subject to the WROs are produced with state-sponsored forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where the Chinese government is engaged in systemic human rights abuses against the Uyghur people and other ethnic and religious minorities".

 

Companies that ship clothing and other cotton goods, computer parts, and hair products from the Xinjiang region were named in the order issued by the CBP.

 

"The series of actions CBP has taken against imports from China demonstrates the pervasive use of unethical and inhumane labor conditions in China, and CBP will not turn a blind eye", Brenda Smith, Executive Assistant Commissioner of CBP’s Office of Trade, said. "Allowing goods produced using forced labor into the US supply chain undermines the integrity of our imports. American consumers deserve and demand better".

 

The United States is considering a broader ban on cotton and textiles and tomatoes from Xinjiang, Ken Cuccinelli, the acting deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said.

 

Human rights groups say Chinese authorities have detained more than a million people — from mostly Muslim ethnic groups that include Uighurs, Kazakhs, and Kyrgyz — in a vast network of detention centres as part of an assimilation campaign.

 

China has denied the charges, saying the camps it built for Uighurs and other minorities were for vocational and Chinese language training and not for slave labour.

Pharmacokinetics: Following a single 200 mg oral dose of PLAQUENIL to healthy males, the mean peak blood concentration of hydroxychloroquine was 129.6 ng/mL, reached in 3.26 hours with a half-life of 537 hours (22.4 days). In the same study, the plasma peak concentration was 50.3 ng/mL reached in 3.74 hours with a half-life of 2963 hours (123.5 days). Urine hydroxychloroquine levels were still detectable after 3 months with approximately 10% of the dose excreted as the parent drug. Results following a single dose of a 200 mg tablet versus i.v. infusion (155 mg), demonstrated a half-life of about 40 days and a large volume of distribution. Peak blood concentrations of metabolites were observed at the same time as peak levels of hydroxychloroquine. The mean fraction of the dose absorbed was 0.74. After administration of single 155 mg and 310 mg intravenous doses, peak blood concentrations ranged from 1161 ng/mL to 2436 ng/mL (mean 1918 ng/mL) following the 155 mg infusion and 6 months following the 310 mg infusion. Pharmacokinetic parameters were not significantly different over the therapeutic dose range of 155 mg and 310 mg indicating linear kinetics.

Following chronic oral administration of hydroxychloroquine, significant levels of three metabolites, desethylhydroxychloroquine (DHCQ), desethylchloroquine (DCQ), and bidesethylhydroxychloroquine (BDCQ) have been found in plasma and blood, with DHCQ being the major metabolite. The absorption half-life was approximately 3 to 4 hours and the terminal half-life ranged from 40 to 50 days. The long half-life can be attributed to extensive tissue uptake

 

rather than through decreased excretion. Peak plasma levels of hydroxychloroquine were seen in about 3 to 4 hours. Renal clearance in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients taking PLAQUENIL for at least six months seemed to be similar to that of the single dose studies in volunteers, suggesting that no change occurs with chronic dosing. Range for renal clearance of unchanged drug was approximately 16 to 30% and did not correlate with creatinine clearance; therefore, a dosage adjustment is not required for patients with renal impairment. In RA patients, there was large variability as to the fraction of the dose absorbed (i.e. 30 to 100%), and mean hydroxychloroquine levels were significantly higher in patients with less disease activity. Cellular levels of patients on daily hydroxychloroquine have been shown to be higher in mononuclear cells than polymorphonuclear leucocytes.

DHS Blocks Products Linked To Uighur Labor Camps & "Modern Slavery" From Entering US

 

Over a month after widespread allegations that China has been routinely using its Muslim Uighur population as prison laborers for products shipped to the West — specifically after 13 tons of human hair in weave products estimated to be worth over $800,000 was seized as a US port — the Department of Homeland Security announced Monday five new orders blocking the importation of products believed to be the result of forced labor.

 

Acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan underscored the new measures send a "clear message" concerning forced labor entering US supply chains.

 

“Today’s Withhold Release Orders send a clear message to the international community that we will not tolerate the illicit, inhumane, and exploitative practices of forced labor in U.S. supply chains,” Morgan said, according to The Hill.

 

The directives are aimed at blocking products from multiple facilities in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region that are suspected of being either internment or 're-education camps' or as including staff made up of forced labor.

 

A brief listing of the five orders via the DHS website includes the following:

Morgan added of these tightening of controls that “The Trump Administration will not stand idly by and allow foreign companies to subject vulnerable workers to forced labor while harming American businesses that respect human rights and the rule of law.”

Officials: 500,000 Counterfeit N95 Masks From China Seized In Chicago

 

CHICAGO–U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers attached to the Anti Terrorism Contraband Enforcement Team (A-TCET) in Chicago were contacted by Homeland Security Investigation to seize a shipment arriving from Schenzhen China. On September 10, 2020, the shipment was seized.

 

The shipment listed 500,000 N-95 respirator masks, which were believed to be counterfeit. A-TCET officers removed 30 masks and sent them to a CDC testing office in West Virginia. The CDC report concluded that 10% of the respirators tested had a filter efficiency rating below 95%. The shipment was seized under Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act Adulterated or Misbranded Products.

 

An appraisal performed by an Import Specialist established the Domestic Value at $3,074,385.00 and MSRP at $474,905.00. The Domestic Value is higher than the MSRP strictly due to the masks being in high demand. The package was destined for a company in Manalapan, New Jersey.

Texas Officer Juan Delacruz Indicted In 2019 Shooting Death Of Pamela Turner

 

A Harris County grand jury indicted Baytown Police Officer Juan Delacruz Monday for the death of 44-year-old Pamela Turner.

 

The charge is aggravated assault by a public servant, a first-degree felony that carries a punishment of five years to life in prison.

 

“Pam Turner’s killing was a tragedy; it is important to acknowledge that her family and the community are in pain,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said.

 

“Every aspect of the case was independently investigated by the Texas Rangers and our Civil Rights Division prosecutors. Ultimately, we presented all of the evidence to a grand jury that determined the Baytown Police officer should be charged with a crime for his actions when he shot Ms. Turner. We respect their decision and we will be moving forward with prosecution,” Ogg said.

 

The incident began when the officer approached Turner in the apartment complex in the 1600 block of Garth Road where they both resided.

 

At the time, police said as Delacruz tried to handcuff her, she grabbed his Taser and used it on him. That’s when the officer fired multiple times.

 

Delacruz will be given the opportunity to turn himself in, so that a judge can set bail.

Several legal advocacy groups on Monday filed a whistleblower complaint on behalf of a nurse at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center documenting “jarring medical neglect” within the facility, including a refusal to test detainees for the novel coronavirus and an exorbitant rate of hysterectomies being performed on immigrant women.

 

The nurse, Dawn Wooten, was employed at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Georgia, which is operated by LaSalle Corrections, a private prison company. The complaint was filed with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by advocacy groups Project South, Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights, and South Georgia Immigrant Support Network.

 

Multiple women came forward to tell Project South about what they perceived to be the inordinate rate at which women in ICDC were subjected to hysterectomies – a surgical operation in which all or part of the uterus is removed. Additionally, many of the immigrant women who underwent the procedure were reportedly “confused” when asked to explain why they had the surgery, with one detainee likening their treatment to prisoners in concentration camps.

 

“Recently, a detained immigrant told Project South that she talked to five different women detained at ICDC between October and December 2019 who had a hysterectomy done,” the complaint stated. “When she talked to them about the surgery, the women ‘reacted confused when explaining why they had one done.’ The woman told Project South that it was as though the women were ‘trying to tell themselves it’s going to be OK.’”

 

“When I met all these women who had had surgeries, I thought this was like an experimental concentration camp. It was like they’re experimenting with our bodies,” the detainee said.

 

According to Wooten, ICDC consistently used a particular gynecologist – outside the facility – who almost always opted to remove all or part of the uterus of his female detainee patients.

 

“Everybody he sees has a hysterectomy—just about everybody,” Wooten said, adding that, “everybody’s uterus cannot be that bad.”

 

“We’ve questioned among ourselves like goodness he’s taking everybody’s stuff out…That’s his specialty, he’s the uterus collector. I know that’s ugly…is he collecting these things or something…Everybody he sees, he’s taking all their uteruses out or he’s taken their tubes out. What in the world.”

Among the recommendations on the “If you plan to vote by mail, plan ahead” postcard is to request a mail-in or absentee ballot at least 15 days before Election Day.

 

But since Washington is already a vote-by-mail state, there is no need to request a ballot.

 

In response to the postcard, the Office of the Secretary of State reminds Washington voters that ballots are automatically mailed to all registered voters at least 18 days before Election Day.

 

Voters who are unsure if they are registered or if their address on file is current can log on to VoteWA.gov to confirm their registration information.

The FBI is investigating allegations that celebrity cheerleader Jerry Harris solicited sexually explicit photos and sex from minors, multiple sources told USA TODAY. Agents executed a search warrant Monday afternoon at a home in Naperville, Illinois, as part of that investigation.

 

"The FBI is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity in the area," Siobhan Johnson, FBI special agent and public affairs officer, told USA TODAY. She declined further comment.

 

Harris, who gained national prominence when he was featured in Netflix’s "Cheer" docuseries, has not been criminally charged. The 21-year-old could not be reached immediately for comment.

 

The criminal investigation is based on allegations that were reported separately to police by Varsity Brands, a private company that dominates the cheerleading industry and handles everything from uniform sales to major competitions. In Aug. 1 letters to police in Florida and Texas, Varsity’s chief legal officer, Burton Brillhart, said the company learned of "inappropriate sexual conduct" allegations against Harris and reported the information to authorities as required by law.

 

"As a result of the recent allegation, we have barred this person from having any affiliation with Varsity Brands or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates, now and in the future," he wrote.

 

Brillhart included two screenshots in his communication with law enforcement. In one – a Snapchat message – a picture of the upper part of what appears to be Harris’ face is labeled with the message, "Would you ever want to ****". The other screenshot – which is a series of text messages – indicates an exchange that began on Friday, May 3, 2019, when an individual named “jerry harris” wrote, "Hey btw I found a place for us to do stuff it’s actually pretty good haha."

 

Brillhart’s letters describe Harris as a former employee who was not working for Varsity at the time of the incidents. In May 2019, Harris posted on social media that he was working for the National Cheerleaders Association, a Varsity brand. That summer, he posted photos and videos of himself coaching athletes at NCA camps.

 

Varsity did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

 

The Netflix docuseries follows Texas’ Navarro College cheerleaders in their quest for a national title. “Cheer,” which received six Emmy nominations, was an instant success when it was released in January. Harris became its breakout star, drawing fans for his positive attitude. Throughout the documentary, the Illinois native shouted encouragement from the sidelines at teammates as they practiced difficult skills.

 

In February, Harris stood on a Dallas stage beside Oprah Winfrey, who handed him her microphone and asked him to pump up the crowd with his signature "mat talk." The same month, he interviewed celebrities on the red carpet of the Oscars for "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." In June, he filmed a short video with former Vice President Joe Biden, encouraging young Black voters to turn out on Election Day.

 

Harris’ Instagram page, which has 1.2 million followers, features partnerships with Cheerios, Starburst and Walmart.

Joe Biden Pledges to Re-enter Paris Climate Agreement Despite U.S. Emissions Reductions

 

Former Vice President Joe Biden promised Monday to bring the U.S. back into the Paris Climate Agreement if he is elected president.

 

“While he [President Donald Trump] turns against our allies, I’ll bring us back into the Paris Agreement,” Biden said. I’ll put us back into business of leading the world on climate change. And I’ll challenge every other country to up the ante on climate commitments.”

 

The Paris Agreement, which entered into force in 2016, is an effort to prevent global average surface temperature from rising more than 2.0 degrees Celsius above the levels that existed prior to the industrial revolution, and below 1.5 degrees Celsius if possible.

 

The U.S. committed to lowering its emissions between 26% and 28% below 2005 levels by 2025.

 

Though the deal also called on developing nations to seek lower emissions, it called on “wealthy economies such as the U.S. and the European Union to shoulder more of the burden, including a pledge to channel at least $100 billion a year to poor countries to help them respond to climate change,” the Wall Street Journal noted at the time.

 

Critics said that the Paris Climate Agreement placed a massive, one-sided burden on the U.S. economy, while allowing developing nations like China — which is responsible for much of the recent rise in global emissions — off the hook.

 

The Obama-Biden administration knew that the agreement, which resembles a treaty, would never pass ratification in the Senate. So the agreement was crafted to be non-binding on several key provisions. That allowed Obama to call the Paris agreement an “executive” agreement.

 

When President Donald Trump famously withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Agreement in 2017, he declared: “I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

 

Ironically, the U.S. had been reducing emissions anyway, without the Paris Agreement. As National Public Radio (NPR) reported in 2017, annual U.S. emissions had fallen 12% since 2005, largely because of a shift away from coal and toward natural gas.

 

Climate research Kate Larsen also told NPR that market forces would prevail in the near term, regardless of Paris: “The U.S. has successfully bent its greenhouse gas emissions curve. And we are going to continue to reduce emissions over the next 10 years, likely regardless of Trump policy.”

 

That may change — but so will technology, and prices, which are the two major factors that have driven U.S. energy policy to a lower-emissions trajectory.

The military order Havoc! was a signal given to the English military forces in the Middle Ages to direct the soldiery (in Shakespeare's parlance 'the dogs of war') to pillage and chaos.

The Black Book of the Admiralty, 1385 is a collection of laws in French and Latin that relate to the organisation of the English Navy. In the 'Ordinances of War of Richard II' in that book we find:
