The meme-fication of US politics: two films reveal the faces behind the posts

On 13 October 2015, Donald Trump, who had recently announced his run for president, tweeted an image of himself standing at the presidential lectern, his face transmogrified into a green, smug-looking frog, known to certain corners of the internet as Pepe. With hindsight, this strange moment offers a stake in the ground, marking out the point when the meme was invited into mainstream political culture.

This collapse of the virtual and the real seems to have only accelerated since then. Online phenomena are no longer cordoned off in their virtual barriers but regularly pass through the screen to play mischief in the so-called “real world”. Two recent documentaries attempt to explain how this all happened – from two very different perspectives.

The first one, Feels Good Man, aims to dissect how the Pepe meme was hijacked by extremist groups to turn the comic character into a symbol of far right bigotry. By comparison the second documentary, TFW No GF, allows a handful of trolls to speak for themselves with little critical pushback. The film was partially funded by Cody Wilson, who was described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as someone who “exists in the world of antigovernment extremists, as a product of a sort of extreme post-libertarianism”. In 2017 he launched Hatreon, a site aimed at crowdfunding for white nationalists who had been banned from sites such as Kickstarter and Patreon.

Feels Good Man tracks Pepe’s journey to notoriety from the point of view of its creator, Matt Furie, a sweet-tempered, somewhat credulous California-based illustrator. We learn that Furie first created Pepe for his 2005 comic Boy’s Club, which tracked the lives of four human-like animal friends living in the languid state between college and adult life. Quintessential 90s slackers, they drink, smoke, fart, and say things like “got milk?” and “as if”. The comic is crude, light-hearted, funny, portraying a type of masculinity in which, as one fan of the comic explains, “you can be in your underwear singing Shania Twain”.

On a whim, Furie uploads a few frames from the comic to his Myspace page. Soon, a wide array of Pepe memes start to take over. People make their own versions of the frog and post him on obscure forums and bulletin boards, including on 4chan, where Pepe undergoes the first of several major mutations. By 2008, he is no longer Furie’s “happy little frog” but a sad, alienated creature, an avatar for disgruntled dropouts who live in their mothers’ basements – or in 4chan language, Neets (Not in Education or Training).

As Pepe breaks out on to more mainstream social media platforms, his image changes once again into a more palatable, funny, feminized frog – shared by the likes of Nicki Minaj and Katie Perry. The 4chaners, who feel their mascot is being stolen by “normies”, react by metamorphizing Pepe into the most “problematic” creature imaginable. They generate versions of Pepe emblazoned with swastikas, Pepe gassing Jewish people, Pepe in a KKK hood. The idea is that if they make the frog politically incorrect, normies will back off.

The ploy worked, perhaps better than expected. By 2015, Pepe had become a symbol for a broad coalition of self-styled transgressive rightwingers, all the way from anti-PC “activists” to full-blown “alt-right” white nationalists to Donald Trump.

For a long time, Furie remains somewhat nonplussed about Pepe’s increasingly toxic online mutations. “I am just a spectator,” he tells a friend. It is only when his design is designated as a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League in September 2016 that he finally confronts how out of hand his Golem-like creature has become. He teams up with the ADL to launch #SavePepe, inviting people to draw and upload their own, peace-loving version of the frog, to drown out the hate.

Of course, the plan fails. 4chan users continue to post racist and pro-Trump memes by the tens of thousands. When Trump wins the election, 4chaners declare that they memed their candidate all the way to the White House.

While the trolly menaces who launch Pepe to notoriety remain mostly faceless in Feels Good Man, in Alex Lee Moyer’s debut documentary, TFW No GF, they become the central characters. (TFW No GF stands for “that feel when no girlfriend”, a slogan taken up on 4chan.)

Eschewing conventions of expert talking heads or definitive narrative, the film unfolds as a somewhat disjointed collage of interviews with previously anonymous, very online people who have gained notoriety for their shitposting, a way of posting online that intentionally derails conversation through irony or lack of context. In the tradition of documentaries about fringy subcultures, Moyer takes a non-judgmental, almost sociological lens, allowing the trolls – white men in their 20s who live mostly in bleak, post-industrial American towns – to speak for themselves.

This decision has made the documentary controversial. By focusing on the trolls’ narrative, Moyer has overlooked those who have been harmed by the abuse and hate that has spread on the platforms that they inhabit. This concern is compounded by Cody Wilson’s involvement in funding the film. When confronted about taking money from Wilson, as well as gaining access to his sources in the far-right world, Moyer told Rolling Stone: “This film is going to stand the test of time and it’s going to help a lot of people. And I will accept money from Cody Wilson for this project, whether I agree with any of his personal decisions or not.”

In the film, we meet Sean, who identifies as “five-foot-six and living in a one-bedroom apartment with my mom”. The gun-toting brothers Charels and Viddy, who turned to the “constant onslaught of gore and pornography” on the internet at a young age to fill the void left by alcoholic parents. Kyle from El Paso, Texas, who participates in live-action role-playing as a millennial cowboy, gets in fights outside bars, and tweets about it later. And Kantbot, a philosopher-shitposter who is now best known for his appearance in a viral video, filmed at an anti-Trump rally in 2016, in which he declares that Trump will “complete the system of German idealism”.

The awkward, depressive, timid presence these young men project on screen is contrasted with screenshots of their online posting, which is irony-laden, macabre, often abusive, and staggeringly misogynistic. (Charels, for instance, “jokes” that he wants to punch a woman in the stomach so hard she stops breathing.)

As the documentary’s title suggests, a source of inspiration for their trolling is unsuccessful relationships with women. None of Moyer’s subjects, however, identify as “incels”, and they carefully differentiate themselves from those who confuse shitposting with real world violence, like Elliot Rodger or Alek Minassian, two young men who acted out their violent fantasies through mass murder. For them, TFW No GF is not a threat, but an emotive motto for a new generation, conveying a fragile emotional state that develops out of loneliness, lack of companionship, and no hope for the future.

On 4chan, the memetic representation of this emotion is not Pepe – who symbolizes the smug, trolling self – but Wojak, a Microsoft Paint illustration of a bald man, who often looks depressed or angry. With his creased, white face and soulless eyes, he is a distinctly uglier character than Pepe, reflecting a broader aesthetic distinction between the two documentaries. Feels Good Man offers a magnificent visual experience, filled with engaging subjects, that ends with redemption: Furie lawyers up and successfully enforces Pepe’s copyright, barring Alex Jones, Richard Spencer, and a host of far-right figures from using his frog. In the final scene, we see him swimming in a picturesque rockpool surrounded by friends, finally free from the online spiral into which was pulled.

In contrast, TFW No GF remains dark and dissonant throughout. In the end, the young men are seemingly trying to move on with their lives – Charels has a girlfriend, Sean is lifting weights. But their future in America seems grim and uncertain. Having spent so much time in the darkest corners of the online world in their formative years, it is difficult to imagine them ever escaping back into the “real world”, or liberating themselves from psychic consequences of their nihilist shitposting.

In this sense, they, and Moyer’s documentary, might offer a more accurate, if terrifying, view of where the culture is heading.

Venezuela to Cooperate With Russia While Developing Domestic Weapons, Maduro Says

 

Venezuela will continue military cooperation with Russia, China, and Iran despite its plans to develop its own armament systems, president Nicolas Maduro said on Friday.

 

Earlier in the day, Maduro spoke at the commemoration of the 15th anniversary of Venezuela's Strategic Command Operations, stating that the country is planning to manufacture its own arms and that a special military and scientific council is being set up for that exact purpose.

 

"We have everything we need to create our own system of weaponry, while continuing cooperation with Russia, China, Cuba, Iran and the entire world, we will continue receiving from them scientific, technological, weapons-related, [and] of course, strategic assistance, but we must move toward independence," Maduro said.

 

Russia and Venezuela have been having extremely good relations for decades, with Moscow being one of Caracas' main suppliers of weapons and military technologies.

 

On Monday, the United States imposed sanctions against Maduro for cooperation with Iran. According to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, "for nearly two years, corrupt officials in Tehran have worked with the illegitimate regime in Venezuela to flout the UN arms embargo."

 

In response, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said that Caracas considers the new US sanctions against the country's president as aggression, adding that Washington can't prevent the country from building trade and economic relations with Iran.

 

Several members of the international community, most notably the US, have imposed sanctions on Venezuela over recent years. Further punitive measures were enforced following the 2019 protests that saw opposition leader Juan Guaido declare himself as interim leader. Russia, China, and Turkey, among others, have supported Nicolas Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate president.

 

Many of the Western sanctions have targeted Venezuela’s state-run oil and gas company Petroleos de Venezuela, and its subsidiaries, in an attempt to seize its foreign assets and prevent the firm from completing transactions.

Over 8,000 infections recorded in all-time high as full lockdown takes effect

 

Health Ministry revises number of cases confirmed Thursday upward to 8,178; 250 yeshiva students contract virus after spending Rosh Hashanah together

 

The Health Ministry on Friday updated the number of new coronavirus cases recorded the previous day to a whopping 8,178, far surpassing the previous high, hours after stricter lockdown measures went into effect.

 

Figures released in the morning put the number of infections confirmed on Thursday at 7,527, but the processing of additional tests apparently led to 651 more cases being added to the total.

 

Since midnight Thursday, the Health Ministry said another 3,391 cases had been confirmed, bringing the number of infections since the pandemic began to 217,899.

 

The ministry also reported 11 more deaths midnight, raising the national toll to 1,412.

 

Of the 62,913 active cases, 708 people were in serious condition, 178 of them on ventilators. Another 253 were in moderate condition, with the rest displaying mild or no symptoms.

 

The record number of diagnoses came after two consecutive days where the number of new infections neared 7,000. The ministry said a particularly high 12.6 percent of the tests that came back Thursday were positive. There were 64,878 tests carried out.

… in an interview hosted last year by the Notre Dame alumni club of Washington, D.C., Barrett described how in 2009, she and her husband Jesse — despite having four kids at home already — were trying to adopt a second child from Haiti, a process that seemed destined for failure.

 

“It looked like it wasn’t going to happen, and then they told us it wasn’t going to happen — paperwork things had just gone south. And so mentally and emotionally, we had closed that door,” Barrett recalled. “ . . . It was right around December and I thought to myself, ‘we should just cut that paperwork, just pull it out and bring it to a close, because they told us that it’s not happening, so we might as well just not have that loose end hanging out there.’ But Christmas came and we didn’t do anything about it.”

 

After the horrific 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Haiti in January 2010, however, the U.S. State Department eased some adoption requirements to expedite the process, and the Barretts’s case was allowed to proceed.

 

And as Jesse was figuring out how to pick up their new son in Florida, Barrett suddenly learned that she was pregnant — despite thinking at the time that “for a variety of reasons, we weren’t sure that would happen” — turning everything back on its head.

 

“We had an intense three-hour period where we had to decide were we going to go forward with going to get John Peter in Florida, because we discovered that Juliette was going to be coming that year too,” Barrett said, recalling the disbelief from adding one child to the family to suddenly having an additional one.

 

“I walked up to the cemetery on campus and I just sat down on one of the benches and I just thought ‘okay, well if life’s really hard, at least it’s short,’” Barrett recalled joking to herself. “But I thought, ‘what, what greater thing can you do than raise children? The US Post Office (USPS) is our greatest threat. Right now this semi-private arm for delivering the US Mail is plotting an election fraud in proportions never seen in any election. It's programming sorting machines to kick American mail in ballots out and insert chinese printed ballots in a swap out that completely reinvents the mail in vote counts. Donald Trump Announces Comprehensive ‘Platinum Plan’ for Black Americans

 

 

President Donald Trump announced Friday his “Platinum Plan” for black Americans at a campaign event in Atlanta, Georgia.

 

The plan is a mixture of economic, education, and financial investments in black communities, detailed in a two-page document released on Friday.

 

“Over the last 50 years black Americans have mostly voted democrat, but every day more black Americans are deciding that the old way is not working,” Trump said, noting that his opponent. former Vice President Joe Biden. was deploying the “same old tired empty slogans.”

 

The plan intends to create 500,000 black-owned businesses, increase access to capital investments, and add three million jobs for the black community.

 

The president also spoke about increasing opportunities for education and job training, including school choice.

 

He also committed to working on additional criminal justice reform legislation, better healthcare, and advanced financial literacy.

 

The president spoke freely at the event, calling out prominent black supporters by name and making jokes about Biden’s low energy.

 

“By the way, he’s staying in again today,” Trump said, pointing to another campaign “lid” on the day’s events.

 

Trump called out Biden for using his 47-year political career to ship jobs overseas, hollow out the middle class, allow foreign illegals into the country, and send men overseas to fight in foreign wars while the inner cities crumbled.

 

“Joe Biden cares more about the citizens of foreign countries than he does about black Americans living in our own country,” Trump said. “I will always put Americans first, and that includes, very very importantly, black Americans.”

 

The president also pointed to Biden’s 1994 crime bill, which instituted stiff drug penalties that affected the black community.

 

“No one in Washington politics today has done more to hurt black Americans than Joe Biden,” he said.

 

Trump also criticized Democrats for supporting the violent leftist Black Lives Matter anti-police protests that actually hurt black communities.

 

“Today I’m urging all black Americans to walk away from the corrupt, hateful, divisive, and very extreme — and they are going crazy — Democrat party.”

 

Trump referred to Biden’s infamous statement to a black interviewer that “you ain’t black” unless you vote for Biden, and another comment calling the black community “monolithic.”

 

“Biden believes that all black Americans have to think the same way,” Trump said, noting that “He doesn’t know black Americans like I do.”

 

He described Democrats as “out of touch liberal hypocrites who stereotype you, disrespect you, and sell you out.”

 

“Joe Biden should not be asking for your support; he should be begging for your forgiveness,” he said.

A Democrat operative says the United States Postal Service (USPS) workers who despise President Trump will sometimes help election fraudsters by throwing in the garbage mail-in ballots from Republican-heavy neighborhoods.

 

Last month, as Breitbart News highlighted, a Democrat operative told the New York Post‘s Jon Levine a number of stories in which insiders like him lead teams of fraudsters to commit election fraud by paying homeless voters off, taking advantage of the elderly, posing as registered voters, and printing up fake ballots.

 

One notable tactic, the Democrat operative said, is how insiders will use USPS workers to help sway election results, Levine reported:

 

“You have a postman who is a rabid anti-Trump guy and he’s working in Bedminster or some Republican stronghold … He can take those [filled-out] ballots, and knowing 95% are going to a Republican, he can just throw those in the garbage.” [Emphasis added]

 

In some cases, mail carriers were members of his “work crew,” and would sift ballots from the mail and hand them over to the operative. [Emphasis added]

 

The fraud tactic was potentially most recently used in the swing district of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Justice Department (DOJ) say mail-in ballots by members of the United States Armed Forces cast for Trump were “discarded.”

 

“At this point, we can confirm that a small number of military ballots were discarded,” DOJ officials said in a statement:

 

Investigators have recovered nine ballots at this time. Some of those ballots can be attributed to specific voters and some cannot. Of the nine ballots that were discarded and then recovered, seven were cast for presidential candidate Donald Trump. Two of the discarded ballots had been resealed inside their appropriate envelopes by Luzerne [County] elections staff prior to recovery by the FBI and the contents of those 2 ballots are unknown. [Emphasis added]

 

Nevada’s June primary shows huge issues with mail-in voting. In Las Vegas, Nevada, more than 223,000 mail-in ballots were deemed “undeliverable” in the election — about 17 percent of the total number of mail-in ballots sent out to voters, unsolicited.

 

Federal election data reveals that since 2012, about 28.4 million mail-in ballots have gone missing in each of the last four election cycles. Pew Research Center analysis finds there are potentially 24 million ineligible or inaccurate voter registrations on state voter rolls.

 

Recent data has not shown a compelling public health justification for mail-in voting. In Wisconsin’s April election, only 52 of more than 400,000 voters and poll workers were confirmed to have contracted the Chinese coronavirus. None of those cases were fatal. This equals an infection rate below two-hundredths of one percent.

At Least 1,400 Virginia Voters Received Multiple Absentee Ballots, State Republican Officials Say

 

Fears over the spread of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic have prompted election officials in many US states to allow the use of absentee ballots by all registered voters in the upcoming presidential election. Democrats advocate the move, while Republicans oppose it, with President Donald Trump claiming absentee voting could lead to “voter fraud”.

 

At least 1,400 registered voters who requested absentee ballots in the US state of Virginia received more than one ballot, as the 2020 US presidential election is only six weeks ahead, the Republican Party of Virginia said on Friday, arguing that the Democrat's endorsement of absentee voting could “make our elections less secure”.

 

“We knew the Democrats many last-minute changes to our election law would make our elections less secure, but no one could imagine voters receiving two ballots,” the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, Rich Anderson, said in a statement.

 

The party claimed that at least 1,000 out of 300,000 voters who requested absentee ballots in Fairfax County were mailed two ballots. In the meanwhile, 300 voters in Richmond and 100 others in Henrico reportedly received two copies as well.

 

Virginia GOPs slammed Governor Ralph Northam over “signing a bill to dramatically change absentee voting only 60 days prior to a Presidential election”, claiming that the error was because the Democratic governor has “provided little or no guidance” to local election officials.

 

The RPV complained that due to the “last-minute” signing of the absentee voting bill, “local election officials were forced to deal with setting up drop boxes for no reason other than to facilitate ballot harvesting by Democrats”.

 

“I insist that the Department of Elections immediately provide guidance to ensure that no additional voters received two ballots,” Anderson added. “All it takes is a simple check of the number of voter applications being processed before printing labels; once the envelopes are labelled and ready to go, simply count the envelopes before taking them to the post office and make sure the number is the same.”

 

The Fairfax director of the Office of Elections and General Registrar, Gary Scott, told NBC 4 Washington on Friday that voters in the county were sent a second ballot after several label printing machines jammed, resulting in a duplicate of an “entire sheet of labels”.

 

“Before the supervisors caught it, the people applying the labels applied them to the entire sheet of labels rather than just pulling out the ones that should have been processed,” Scott said, noting that only one ballot will be counted per voter if an extra is submitted. She urged those who received two ballots to destroy one.

The people on the left who believe that Donald Trump is plotting to make himself president-for-life are the progressive answer to QAnon. They’re bananas, they’re terrified, and they are having a terrific time. Clive Thompson, writing in Wired, argues that QAnon is a kind of alternate-reality game, one that “poses a mystery that feels so big it can only be solved by crowdsourcing. It’s thrilling to be involved with other people in something bigger than yourself. Plus, it turns one’s armchair-warrior Googling into a heroic quest for truth.”

 

It is difficult to believe that very many of the Froot-Loops in the Q world actually believe what they say they believe — but, on the other hand, this is America, and America is full of lunatics: Some of those flat-earth guys are just running a grift, but some of them really believe it. The Trump Forever Junta conspiracy theory tends to be trafficked in by slightly fancier people, and so it smells just a little bit more respectable, but it’s basically the same thing — a narrative that is attractive not because it is plausible to believers but because it offers a ritualistic way to lower the social status of the people they hate.
