California city flag stolen, replaced by Trump campaign banner

Police on Sunday were investigating a theft of a city of Long Beach flag that was reportedly stolen outside police headquarters and replaced with a banner supporting President Trump.

 

An unidentified person allegedly gained access to a secured construction area of the Long Beach Police Department and removed the city flag from a flagpole and replaced it with an "unauthorized political flag," authorities said. A padlock was placed on the flagpole to prevent the banner from being removed.

 

"LBPD is currently working on identifying the individual/s responsible for this incident," wrote Assistant Chief of Police Wally Hebeish on Twitter. "We are reviewing all available information and evidence and will update this message as facts become available."

In photos and videos released by the White House, there was hardly any sign that President Trump is sick, and painting in the broadest of strokes, his doctors offered a fairly rosy portrait of his condition.

 

But to some outside experts who examined that portrait closely, some things seemed off.

 

How much, for example, should people make of the president’s fluctuating oxygen levels? And why did his doctors decide to begin treatment with a steroid drug?

 

Too some infectious disease experts, there were signs that Mr. Trump may be suffering a more severe case of Covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, than his physicians have acknowledged.

 

β€œThis is no longer aspirationally positive,” Dr. Esther Choo, a professor of emergency medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, said of the doctors’ statements. β€œAnd it’s much more than just an β€˜abundance of caution’ kind of thing.”

 

Based his doctors’ account, Mr. Trump’s symptoms appear to have rapidly progressed since he announced early Friday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.

 

Mr. Trump had a β€œhigh fever” on Friday, and there were two occasions when his blood oxygen levels dropped, his doctors said, including to a level that can indicate that a patient’s lungs are compromised. The symptom is seen in many patients with severe Covid-19.

 

The president’s medical team also said that he had been prescribed dexamethasone. The drug is a steroid used to head off an immune system overreaction that kills many Covid-19 patients. And it is generally reserved for those with severe illness.

 

β€œThe dexamethasone is the most mystifying of the drugs we’re seeing him being given at this point,” said Dr. Thomas McGinn, physician in chief at Northwell Health, the largest health care provider in New York State.

 

The drug, he said, is normally not used unless the patient’s condition seems to be deteriorating.

 

β€œSuddenly, they’re throwing the kitchen sink at him,” Dr. McGinn said. β€œIt raises the question: Is he sicker than we’re hearing, or are they being overly aggressive because he is the president, in a way that could be potentially harmful?”

 

Of course, given the patient, there may be another explanation.

 

Some experts raised an additional possibility: that the president is directing his own care, and demanding intense treatment despite risks he may not fully understand.The pattern even has a name: V.I.P. syndrome.

U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey has decided not to run for reelection or for governor of Pennsylvania in 2022, according to two people familiar with his plans, a surprise decision by the Republican with significant implications for the state’s next elections.

 

He is planning to serve out his current Senate term but won’t run for either of those offices, seemingly ending his career in elected office, at least for now. A formal announcement is expected Monday.

As the only Republican holding statewide office other than judges, Toomey was widely seen as the likely Republican favorite for governor in 2022. His decision not to run for that office or for Senate could create two wide-open contests on the Republican side, while depriving the party of running its most established current political figure in Pennsylvania.

Toomey’s absence from the ballot in 2022 could also create an easier path for Democrats hoping to hold the governor’s office and flip his competitive Senate seat. Toomey has won his two Senate elections by the slimmest of margins, but is experienced in statewide races and is a savvy campaigner with significant cash in his campaign account.

 

However, since his 2016 election he has also become a lightning rod for liberals who have criticized him for, in their view, not standing up strongly enough to Trump. Since that year, protesters have regularly held events outside his offices. If Toomey had run again, he would almost certainly have drawn far more vehement opposition than he has faced in either of his previous statewide campaigns.

 

Toomey’s decision not to run for Senate isn’t entirely surprising. He has long supported term limits and before his 2016 reelection campaign said it was β€œlikely” to be his last Senate bid.

 

Toomey also has fulfilled some longtime goals during the Trump presidency, including playing a major role in writing the 2017 bill that cut taxes and rewrote key pieces of the tax code. Earlier this year, he helped craft major provisions in Congress' coronavirus rescue package.

But he has largely backed Trump’s agenda and appointments, and has supported his party’s push to quickly fill a Supreme Court vacancy before Election Day. That was a reversal of the position he took in 2016, when he cited an election eight months away in opposing a confirmation vote for President Barack Obama’s nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to the high court. Republicans now argue this opening is different because the same party now controls the White House and Senate.

Apple has filed a lawsuit against its former contractor GEEP Canada for allegedly reselling over 100,000 iPhones, iPads and Watches that were supposed to be disassembled and recycled. β€œAt least 11,766 pounds of Apple devices left GEEP’s premises without being destroyed β€” a fact that GEEP itself confirmed,” the complaint reads, according to The Logic (via The Verge).

 

The problem was discovered after Apple audited over 500,000 iPhones, Watches and iPads between 2015 and 2017. It discovered that18 percent of those devices (103,845 in total) were still accessing the internet through cellular networks. That doesn’t count WiFi-only devices, so the figure is likely much higher.

 

Apple is seeking $31 million CAD ($22.7 million US) from its former partner. GEEP hasn’t denied the theft, but claims that three employees stoles the devices to benefit themselves, not the company. Apple countered that the employees were in fact GEEP’s senior executives.

 

Apple does market refurbished devices, but it won’t attempt to sell or allow to be sold any that don’t meet its safety or quality standards. β€œProducts sent for recycling are no longer adequate to sell to consumers… and could cause serious safety issues,” the company told The Verge.

Hunter Biden received a single wire transfer of $3.5 million from Elena Baturina. The Senate report said she became a billionaire through illegal construction contracts awarded by her husband, since deceased.

 

This is based on Treasury Department reports received by committee Chairman Ron Johnson, Wisconsin Republican, and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican.
