Sen. Susan Collins to buck Trump, vote against Coney Barrett

 

Sen. Susan Collins, the Maine Republican facing a tough reelection battle, has decided to oppose Judge Amy Coney Barrett's nomination to the Supreme Court, saying she wants to be consistent after voting four years ago to oppose President Barack Obama's nominee during an election year.

 

Collins made her announcement Sunday, issuing a formal statement that she wasn't rejecting Barrett's credentials to serve on the high court but simply "being fair and consistent."

 

"Prior to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death, I stated that, should a vacancy on the Supreme Court arise, the Senate should follow the precedent set four years ago and not vote on a nominee prior to the presidential election," she said.

 

"Because this vote is occurring prior to the election, I will vote against the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett," she added.

 

Collins, like most Republicans, opposed Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court four years ago. Barrett's final confirmation vote in the Senate is slated for Monday evening.

Pompeo under investigation for potentially violating Hatch Act with RNC speech

 

An investigation has been opened into whether Secretary of State Mike Pompeo violated the Hatch Act in his speech to the Republican National Convention, two top Democrats confirmed on Monday.

At issue is Pompeo delivering a speech from Jerusalem, Israel, to the convention in August. The State Department said at the time that the secretary of state was in his "personal capacity" when he addressed the event.

Pence had planned to preside over the vote in his role as Senate president.

 

But his chief of staff, Marc Short, and four other employees in the vice president's office have contracted coronavirus, and Democrats fear he could be contagious.

 

โ€œNot only would your presence in the Senate Chamber tomorrow be a clear violation of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, it would also be a violation of common decency and courtesy,โ€ Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats wrote to Pence on Monday. โ€œYour presence alone could be very dangerous to many people โ€” not just Senators, but to all the truly essential staff โ€” both Democratic and Republican, who must be physically present inside the U.S. Capitol for it to function.โ€

 

While Pence can serve a critical role in breaking a tie vote, his vote wonโ€™t be needed on Monday night. Barrett is poised to be confirmed with the support of at least 52 Republicans.

Beijing is following up its announcement of impending sanctions to be levied against a trio of American defense contractors by ordering six American media companies to deliver detailed information about their finances, staff and other details.

 

The urgent demand - which gives the media companies a week to comply - follows another tit-for-tat attempt by Washington to crack down on Chinese media by labeling six entities as "foreign missions", which could create problems for their employees working from the US.

 

This isn't the first attack on American journalists. Back in March, the CCP kicked out all the most critical western journos from the NYT, WSJ and Washington Post, plus others.

"ST. PAUL โ€” Former Minnesota congressman and Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Jason Lewis is undergoing emergency surgery today for an internal hernia, according to his campaign.

 

Lewis was "rushed" to the emergency room early Monday, Oct. 26, for severe abdominal pain, his campaign manager, Tom Szymanski, said in a news release.

 

As of about 11 a.m. Monday, Lewis was undergoing emergency surgery, doctors say as the prognosis can be life-threatening if not treated quickly, per the campaign.

 

Szymanski said that heading into the operating room, Lewis was "in good spirits, optimistic, and true to form, he was speculating about when he could resume campaigning, eager to continue fighting for his fellow Minnesotans."

 

According to the University of Michigan medical school, an inguinal hernia occurs when a portion of the bowel bulges through the abdominal wall into the groin, resulting in abdominal pain. Per Michigan, recovery time for open hernia repair surgery is typically about three weeks. Patients can usually go home the same day as their surgery, return to light activity after three weeks and strenuous exercise after six"โ€ฆ..

Delaware Senate Candidate Lauren Witzke Calls on Sen. Coons To Denounce Biden Campaign After New Hunter Biden Texts Emerge

 

Delaware Republican nominee for U.S. Senate Lauren Witzke is demanding that Senator Chris Coons denounce Joe Biden after the Gateway Punditโ€™s exclusive report showing that the former Vice President, as well as his wife Jill Biden and brother Jim Biden covered for Hunter Biden, who has been accused of being sexually inappropriate with a young relative.

 

Witzke also noted that Biden himself has been credibly accused of sexually assaulting Tara Reade.

 

โ€œThe evidence of Hunter Bidenโ€™s alleged sexual impropriety with a female family member, who was a child at the time, has now been reported for the world to see,โ€ Witzke said. โ€œThe text messages reveal that the Biden family, including Joe Biden, protected Hunter instead of taking the childโ€™s accusations seriously. Joe Biden himself has also been credibly accused of sexual assault by Tara Reade, another story the mainstream press has refused to cover.โ€

 

The GOP candidate demanded that Coons drop his endorsement of Bidenโ€™s campaign.

 

โ€œI am calling on Senator Coons to immediately denounce Joe Biden, and drop his endorsement of the Biden campaign,โ€ Witzke continued. โ€œSenator Coons has also been endorsed by Joe Biden. I am calling on him to distance himself from that endorsement, too.โ€

 

Witzke also noted Senator Coonsโ€™ hypocrisy.

 

โ€œChris Coons took part in the Womenโ€™s March rallies, even donning the infamous pink hat to show his supposed support for sexually abused and exploited women, and the #MeToo movement,โ€ she said. โ€œBut now, when women and girls accused by the Bidenโ€™s need a voice more than ever, he is protecting them, just like he protected Joe Biden when the Vice President groped his daughter.โ€

 

โ€œThe numerous allegations of sexual abuse levied against the Biden family should be enough for Senator Coons, if he has a level of judgment becoming of a U.S. Senator or cares about survivors of sex crimes, to immediately condemn the Biden family, instead of covering for them in the name of partisan politics,โ€ she finished.
