A plant species that “eats” metal was recently discovered in the Philippines, and scientists who identified the iron-stomached plant say it could help clean up the environment.

According to scientists at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, who published a report about the metal-eating plant in the journal PhytoKeys on Friday, Rinorea niccolifera absorbs and stores up to 18,000 parts per million of nickel in its leaves without being poisoned. That’s about 1,000 times more metal than is present in most other plants.

"Hyperacccumulator plants have great potentials for the development of green technologies,” Augustine Doronila of the University of Melbourne, a co-author of the report, said in a statement. Doronila noted the value of Rinorea niccolifera for uses like phytoremediation (using plants to remove contaminants from the environment) and phytomining (employing plants in the recovery of valuable metals.)

Rinorea niccolifera was found on the western part of Luzon Island in an area known for its metal-rich soil.

Only about 0.5 to 1 percent of plants have the ability to absorb metal. According to National Geographic, there are around 350 known species of plants that accumulate metals such as nickel, zinc, copper and manganese in high concentrations.

Hyperaccumulating plants store the metal in vacuoles – microscopic structures in their cells. Vacuoles have membranes similar to those in the human liver that protect the rest of the cell from the toxic effects of the metal.

"[Metal-eating plants] have this extraordinary capacity to accumulate metals, and they do this in the wild without any interference from man,” David E. Salt, associate professor of plant molecular physiology at Purdue University, told National Geographic in 2001. “They just do this for a living."

Salt led a team that cloned the genes that allow hyperaccumulator plants to store high concentrations of metals. Their findings could lead to new crop plants that can clean up industrial contamination and allow for improved crop nutrition.

Researchers have been experimenting with metal-eating plants for some time now. The goal is to see if crop plants could clean up soil by absorbing heavy metals.

Metal-absorbing plants also have implications for mining industries. The process works by first locating soils that contain high levels of a particular metal, and then growing plants that absorb that metal through their roots and store them in their leaves. The metal can then be recovered, or harvested, from the leaves by burning the plants and processing the ash in a smelter or refinery, according to Gizmodo.

The trick will be finding plants whose ability to take up metal is so strong as to be economically viable.

Scientists aren’t sure exactly why some plants absorb much more metal, but they believe it could be a kind of defense mechanism to keep animals from eating them.

“Just as people hate to bite down on a piece of aluminum foil, insects tend to avoid eating plants that taste like metal,” National Geographic noted.

This species is most similar to the widespread Rinorea bengalensis by its fasciculate inflorescences and smooth subglobose fruits with 3 seeds, but it differs by its glabrous ovary with shorter style (5 mm long), the summit of the staminal tube sinuate to entire and the outer surface smooth, generally smaller leaves (3–8 cm long × 2–3 cm wide), and smaller fruits (0.6–0.8 cm diameter). Once upon a time this was a video about a story I heard while traveling through Borneo. It was the story of a security guard that was eaten by a huge python snake. I didn't know whether the story was real or not, but I tracked down as many facts as I could.

The video itself was intended as a promotion for the story I wrote and posted to my blog page… Well, the video went viral and one step at a time it was ripped apart by various forces and what you see here today is the final result - an unintelligible collection of chaotic images and sounds that have nothing to do with the original video.

For some odd reason, Youtube's algorithm started suggesting it to viewers in 2019 again and well, it didn't make people very happy. So now I have re-titled it letting people know there is nothing left to watch.

Now you might suggest, Bill, why don't you just take it down? Well, with 89 Million views is not something I want to lose from the overall view count on my Channel. When a video is removed, the views are subtracted from your overall count. You might think that is not important, but in the world of Youtube ads it is. I get asked to do promos for brands and before they come to me, you can be sure they check my channel for views and subscribers.

Parachutist falls through roof of Atascadero home

A parachutist training with a group at Camp Roberts fell through the roof of a home in Atascadero on Tuesday.

It happened just before 5 p.m. at a home in the 9500 block of Via Ciello.

“I was in shock. I'm like, what?” said neighbor Rose Martin.

Before the crash landing, several neighbors saw the parachutist spiraling in the air.

Moments later, Martin, who is a registered nurse, heard a neighbor banging on her front door.

“So I ran in to make sure he was okay and I checked on him and his eyes were open but I wasn't sure if there were any injuries. I didn't want anyone to move him,” Martin said.

According to the Atascadero Police Department, the man's parachute failed to fully deploy.

“Came through the roof, through the tresses and there's not that much damage in the house,” said Linda Sallady, the homeowner’s mother. “It's amazing. It's mostly the ceiling, the sheetrock. He missed the counters, appliances, everything.”

The residents were not home at the time of the accident and nobody else was injured.

“It’s a miracle in my estimation, really. I mean, who lands like that without a parachute and lives?” Martin said.

Police say the parachutist was conscious when found and had no visible serious injuries but was complaining of pain. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

The rest of the training group reportedly landed safely at their designated landing field.

KSBY News reached out to Camp Roberts for comment but did not hear back.

The professional wrestler turned actor shared an Instagram video on Sunday showing a large bird of prey with a snake in its talons.

The hungry bird is seen standing on a pillar right outside Johnson’s kitchen window devouring the serpent.

The Biden regime is now calling on SMS carriers to “fact-check” text messages in an effort to stop ‘misinformation’ about the Covid-19 vaccine.

Last Tuesday White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the Biden Administration will be sending goons door-to-door to harass unvaccinated Americans.

Biden confirmed that during his remarks last week and said his admin will focus on communities where vaccination rates are low.

“We need to go community-by-community, neighborhood-by-neighborhood, and oft times door-to-door, literally knocking on doors,” Biden said.

Now the Biden regime and its Democrat allies are going to monitor private communications to “dispel misinformation about vaccines that is sent over social media and text messages.”

Democrat goons are already attacking TPUSA’s Charlie Kirk for his messaging campaign around vaccine efforts.

“Organizations that are feeding misinformation and trying to mischaracterize this type of trusted-messenger work, I believe you are doing a disservice to the country and to the doctors, the faith leaders, community leaders, and others who are working to get people vaccinated, save lives, and help end this pandemic,” WH Covid response coordinator Jeff Zients said at a news conference last week.

Biden allied groups, including theDemocratic National Committee, are also planning to engage fact-checkers more aggressively and work with SMS carriers to dispel misinformation about vaccines that is sent over social media and text messages. The goal is to ensure that people who may have difficulty getting a vaccination because of issues like transportation see those barriers lessened or removed entirely.

“We are steadfastly committed to keeping politics out of the effort to get every American vaccinated so that we can save lives and help our economy further recover,” White House spokesperson Kevin Munoz said. “When we see deliberate efforts to spread misinformation, we view that as an impediment to the country’s public health and will not shy away from calling that out.”

Charlie Kirk, the pro-Trump co-founder of the conservative student organization Turning Point USA, said on Fox last week that he was embarking on a “massive public relations campaign” around vaccination efforts, which he compared it to an “Apartheid-style open air hostage situation.” (Turning Point’s other founder, Bill Montgomery, died last year from coronavirus-related complications.)

Turning Point USA has also sent out SMS messages urging people to sign petitions on the topic. In one message, viewed by POLITICO, Kirk contends, “Biden is sending goons DOOR-TO-DOOR to make you take a Covid-19 vaccine. Sign the petition to: No medical raids in America.”

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday implied Biden’s statement on the Cuba protests didn’t actually come from Joe Biden.

Thousands of Cubans came out to protest the broken healthcare system and demanded freedom from the Communist dictatorship on Sunday.

The Florida doctor arrested over the assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moise campaigned to replace the slain leader and claimed to have the backing of a key UN figure, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian who has lived in the US since the late 70s, is suspected of being 'one of the leaders' behind the brazen shooting of Moise and the attempted killing of his wife Martine last week.

Haitian police say he entered the strife-plagued country last month on a private jet 'with the intention of taking the Haitian Presidency' although they are yet to back their accusations with hard evidence.

DailyMail.com can reveal that Sanon's ambitions to reform his poverty-stricken homeland date back to February 2011 when he launched a website entitled 'Dr Christian Sanon Leadership pour Haiti'.

The site has since vanished but archived web pages from 2011 to 2016 include a portal for donations, a 'plan for Haiti', and news updates on Sanon's efforts to build clinics in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake.

Sanon's goals became more explicit last month with the launch of another website – Haitianlivesmatter – which specifically called for the ouster of Moise, who was shot at least 12 times on July 7 and had an eye gouged out.

A letter addressed to Julie Chung, Acting Assistant Secretary for the State's Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, says: 'Our own democracy has now been taken. We are no longer free but instead are controlled by the authoritarianism of Jovenel Moise.

'Moise has stolen the democracy Haitians died to create. He has "unchecked' executive power … Moise has shown he intends to use his power, intimidation and unending wide scale brutality to broaden and extend his control of Haiti by establishing a new "Constitution" in just a few weeks.

'Even worse, this "Constitution" would provide impunity for his crimes. If this 'Constitution' is 'enacted,' it will be without legitimate legal authority, it would contravene elections and the current 'crisis' could 'morph' into violent and deadly pandemonium throughout Haiti.

'We pray this does not happen, but time is running out; as you know, a "fuse" has been burning since February 7! Something must be done soon.

'Haitians are thoroughly convinced that even IF elections were ever organized by the current administration, these "elections" would be not be fair and therefore they would compound the current crisis.

'Thus, as you say, Haiti is "paralyzed'': no elections cause chaos, but, fair elections organized by the current administration are widely believed to be unrealistic. Therefore … Haiti needs a transitional government to restore Haiti's democracy and freedom.'

The letter - signed 'The People of Haiti' - includes a decree explaining how Sanon was picked to be interim leader after 'extensive consultations' with leading political, religious, and business figures.

Under the order, he would serve a maximum of three years while the country's government was rebuilt with the help of a consultative council of 25 members, 30 percent of which would be female, ahead of 'fair democratic elections.'

The website, which was taken down sometime after June 7, outlines a coalition of supporters for Sanon's transitional government including a UN official named Willy Louis.

'At the Permanent Mission of Haiti to the United Nations, the Minister Counselor Louis leads the Fourth Committee, overseeing all issues related to the maintenance of peace operations and records on Humanitarian Affairs,' the site says.

Louis was introduced as Minister Counselor from the Permanent Mission of Haiti when he spoke about the country's plight during a 2019 event at UN headquarters in New York.

Another backer, Frantz Gilot is described as 'part of the UN training globally for Human Rights Ethics & Integrity'.

'The leader we have chosen has a record of integrity and genuine love for the people and their well-being,' the coalition's statement says of Sanon, describing him as a 'pastor, physician, leader.'

Sanon's brother did not dispute suggestions that his sibling was in Haiti to achieve political change but he defended him as a ‘Godly man’ rather than a violent instigator.

'It would be good for the truth to come out. It would be good for there to be more information to know exactly what’s going on,' Joseph Sanon told DailyMail.com.

'We are praying, asking the lord to show us. I want to know the truth. I'm desperate to know it.'

Joseph, 53, said he was aware his brother was in Haiti but said he had not spoken to him for months.

Asked whether his sibling's plans for their homeland involved violence, he responded: 'Prayer, prayer, and that’s what we are doing now.

'We are praying for the country, we are praying for the people. Our focus has always been to prayer.'

On Saturday Haitian authorities said the suspects were a unit of assassins made up of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans. Five Colombians are still on the loose.

Sanon is the third person with US ties to be arrested in connection with last week's assassination. James Solages, 35, and Joseph G. Vincent, 55, both from South Florida, have been in custody since they turned themselves in.

Sanon allegedly recruited the Miami-based CTU Security, which is registered in Florida as the Counter Terrorist Unit Federal Academy LCC, and CTU Security recruited the Colombians who are accused of carrying out the hit, sources familiar with the investigation told the Miami Herald.

The National Police said they also have evidence that Sanon was in contact with at least two other suspects who planned the assassination.

Police Chief Léon Charles say authorities raided Sanon's house in Haiti and found 20 boxes of bullets, gun parts, four automobile license plates from the Dominican Republic and two cars and correspondence.

They also found a hat emblazoned with the logo of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration - the same disguise the assassins are said to have used during the attack.

Charles said Sanon recruited the suspects, adding that he flew into Haiti with them in early June. The men's initial mission was to protect Sanon, but they later received a new one: arrest the president, the chief said.

'The operation started from there,' he said, adding that an additional 22 suspects joined the group and that contact was made with Haitian citizens.

Charles said that after Moïse was killed, one of the suspects phoned Sanon, who then got in touch with two people believed to be the intellectual authors of the plot. He did not identify the masterminds or say if police knew who they are.

Sanon has lived in Florida, in Broward County and in Hillsborough County on the Gulf Coast. Records show he has also lived in Kansas City, Missouri. He filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and identifies himself as a doctor in a video on YouTube titled 'Leadership for Haiti.'

Although he describes himself as a doctor he does not have a license in Florida, the Miami Herald reports.

In the video, he denounces the leaders of Haiti as corrupt, accusing them of stripping the country of its resources, saying that 'they don't care about the country, they don't care about the people.'

He claims Haiti has uranium, oil and other resources that have been taken by government officials. 'With me in power, you are going to have to tell me: 'What are you doing with my uranium? What are you doing with the oil that we have in the country? What are you going to do with the gold?''

He also added: 'This is a country with resources. Nine million people can't be in poverty when we have so much resources in the country. It's impossible. … The world has to stop doing what they are doing right now. We can't take it anymore. We need new leadership that will change the way of life.'

Sanon has more than a dozen registered companies in Florida, including medical services, an energy company and real estate, but most are now inactive, the Herald reports.

He has also listed himself as church pastor at the Tabarre Evangelical Tabernacle and as president of a non-government organization called Organization Rome Haiti.

The middle-of-the-night murder plunged the troubled Caribbean nation into chaos, with at least three men now claiming to be its leader.

In an effort to quell tensions, President Joe Biden acknowledged the county's interim government's request for help and sent a delegation of US officials to Haiti on Sunday to help with security and aid in the investigation.

They will report back to Biden on their findings as US debates its response.

'You Just Feel Like Nothing': California to Pay Sterilization Victims

Leonard Bisel was 15 when the state of California decided that he should not have children, threatening to lock him up and force him to do hard labor if he did not submit to sterilization.

In the middle of his operation, recalled Bisel, now 88, he woke up. “It was really painful,” he said, “and the doctor told me to shut up.”

Under the influence of a movement known as eugenics, whose supporters believed that those with physical disabilities, psychiatric disorders and other conditions were “genetically defective,” more than 60,000 people across the United States were forcibly sterilized by state-run programs throughout the 20th century.

Almost all of the state’s procedures were performed through institutions, like the one where Bisel lived, and none were legally required to have the patient’s consent. Some of those sterilized were as young as 11.

Even after California repealed its eugenics law in 1979, it continued to sterilize women in prison, sometimes without ensuring that their consent was lawfully obtained, according to a 2014 state report that followed an exposé by the Center for Investigative Reporting.

Now, under a budget passed by the Legislature and awaiting the governor’s approval, California is prepared to spend $7.5 million to find and pay an estimated 600 surviving victims of coerced sterilization, both under the eugenics law and in prison, an estimated $25,000 each.

The move follows similar efforts in Virginia and North Carolina to compensate victims of the eugenics movement, which peaked in the United States in the early 20th century and inspired similar practices in Nazi Germany. Thirty-two states had some sort of federally funded program that forcibly sterilized immigrants, people of color, those with disabilities and others labeled “undesirable,” under the guise of public health.

Nationwide support for reparations to descendants of enslaved people has grown in recent years, including in California, where an effort is underway to develop proposals for compensating Black residents for centuries of systemic discrimination and inequality. Reparations to victims of involuntary sterilization is seen by some advocates as a similar first step in acknowledging the country’s long history of discrimination against people with disabilities.

“There still is a great amount of prejudice against people with disabilities and assumptions that they are, in the most extreme form, not worthy of life, not worthy of being born and certainly not worthy of parenting,” said Alexandra Minna Stern, a University of Michigan professor who is an expert on eugenics and reproductive rights.

Not everyone who was forcibly sterilized under California’s program had a disability. The vast majority were poor, and many were wards of the state from so-called “broken homes.” Many had suffered previous abuse, and many were Black, Latino, Asian American or Native American.

Bisel ended up in an institution called the Sonoma State Home in Eldridge, California, after his father died; his mother had been previously institutionalized and was unable to take care of him. He said he felt he had no choice but to submit to sterilization. On his medical forms, he was labeled “dull.”

Records show that Bisel’s mother was also sterilized at the same institution.

“You just feel like nothing,” he said. “You’re not worth anything.”

Bisel now lives in Selah, Washington. He married, adopted two daughters and now has six grandchildren. Under California’s reparations proposal, he would need to apply and be approved for the money. Victims would have two years to come forward.

Similar programs in other states have had a tough time distributing money, in part because many victims have died or have been difficult to track down. To try to overcome that obstacle, part of the California budget proposal would provide the state’s Victim Compensation Board with $2 million for outreach and collaboration with social justice organizations.

America’s Frontline Doctors (AFLDS) today filed a motion in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama requesting a temporary restraining order against the emergency use authorization (EUA) permitting using the COVID-19 vaccines in children under the age of 16, and that no further expansion of the EUAs to children under the age of 16 be granted prior to the resolution of these issues at trial.

The case will challenge the EUAs for the injections on several counts, based on the law and scientific evidence that the EUAs should never have been granted, the EUAs should be revoked immediately, the injections are dangerous biological agents that have the potential to cause substantially greater harm than the COVID-19 disease itself, and that numerous laws have been broken in the process of granting these EUAs and foisting these injections on the American people.

AFLDS Founder Dr. Simone Gold spoke about the reasons for filing the motion: “We doctors are pro-vaccine, but this is not a vaccine,” she said. “This is an experimental biological agent whose harms are well-documented (although suppressed and censored) and growing rapidly, and we will not support using America’s children as guinea pigs.”

She continued: “We insist that the EUA not be relinquished prematurely; certainly not before trials are complete – October 31, 2022 for Moderna and April 27, 2023 for Pfizer. We are shocked at the mere discussion of this, and will not be silent while Americans are used as guinea pigs for a virus with survivability of 99.8% globally and 99.97% under age 70.
